In this paper, we extend the Topological Quantum Field Theory developed by González-Prieto, Logares, and Muñoz for computing virtual classes of $G$-representation varieties of closed orientable surfaces in the Grothendieck ring of varieties to the setting of the character stacks. To this aim, we define a suitable Grothendieck ring of representable stacks, over which this Topological Quantum Field Theory is defined. In this way, we compute the virtual class of the character stack over $BG$, that is, a motivic decomposition of the representation variety with respect to the natural adjoint action.
We apply this framework in two cases providing explicit expressions for the virtual classes of the character stacks of closed orientable surfaces of arbitrary genus. First, in the case of the affine linear group of rank $1$, the virtual class of the character stack fully remembers the natural adjoint action, in particular, the virtual class of the character variety can be straightforwardly derived. Second, we consider the non-connected group $\mathbb{G}_m \rtimes \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, and we show how our theory allows us to compute motivic information of the character stacks where the classical naïve point-counting method fails.
In this paper, we construct proper pushforwards and flat pullbacks in Chow groups of coherent sheaf stacks over a Deligne-Mumford(DM) stack. When there is a relative semi-perfect obstruction theory for a DM-type morphism $X \to Y$, $X$ is a DM stack and $Y$ is a DM stack or a smooth Artin stack, we define a virtual pull-back as a bivariant class. This is an analogue of virtual pull-backs defined by Manolache.
We construct the étale motivic Borel-Moore homology of derived Artin stacks. Using a derived version of the intrinsic normal cone, we construct fundamental classes of quasi-smooth derived Artin stacks and demonstrate functoriality, base change, excess intersection, and Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas. These classes also satisfy a general cohomological Bézout theorem which holds without any transversity hypotheses. The construction is new even for classical stacks and as one application we extend Gabber's proof of the absolute purity conjecture to Artin stacks.
Almost perfect obstruction theories were introduced in an earlier paper by the authors as the appropriate notion in order to define virtual structure sheaves and $K$-theoretic invariants for many moduli stacks of interest, including $K$-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of sheaves and complexes on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The construction of virtual structure sheaves is based on the $K$-theory and Gysin maps of sheaf stacks. In this paper, we generalize the virtual torus localization and cosection localization formulas and their combination to the setting of almost perfect obstruction theory…
The existence of interesting multiplicative cohomology theories for orbifolds was first suggested by string theorists. Orbifold products have been intensely studied by mathematicians for the last fifteen years. In this paper we focus on the virtual orbifold product that was first introduced in Lupercio et al. (2007). We construct a categorification of the virtual orbifold product that leverages the geometry of derived loop stacks. By work of Ben-Zvi, Francis and Nadler, this reveals connections between virtual orbifold products and Drinfeld centers of monoidal categories, thus answering a ques…
We introduce the notion of log R-maps, and develop a proper moduli stack of stable log R-maps in the case of a hybrid gauged linear sigma model. Two virtual cycles (canonical and reduced) are constructed for these moduli stacks. The main results are two comparison theorems relating the reduced virtual cycle to the cosection localized virtual cycle, as well as the reduced virtual cycle to the canonical virtual cycle. This sets the foundation of a new technique for computing higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections.
We construct virtual fundamental classes in all intersection theories including Chow theory, K-theory and algebraic cobordism for quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford stacks with perfect obstruction theories and prove the virtual pullback formula, the virtual torus localization formula and cosection localization principle.
In this paper, we compare the virtual fundamental classes of the stacks of $(g,β,μ)$-stable ramified maps $\bar{\mathfrak U}_{g,μ}(X,β)$ and of $(g,β,μ)$-log stable ramified maps $\bar{\mathfrak U}^{\mathrm{log}}_{g,μ}(X,β)$. For that we will see how they are identified via virtual normalization and then apply Costello's push-forward formula.
We construct a canonical stabilizer reduction $\widetilde{X}$ for any derived $1$-algebraic stack $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ as a sequence of derived Kirwan blow-ups, under mild natural conditions that include the existence of a good moduli space for the classical truncation $X_{\mathrm{cl}}$. Our construction has several desired features: it naturally generalizes Kirwan's classical partial desingularization algorithm to the context of derived algebraic geometry, preserves quasi-smoothness, and is a derived enhancement of the intrinsic stabilizer reduction constructed by Kiem, Li and the third auth…
We introduce the notion of almost perfect obstruction theory on a Deligne-Mumford stack and show that stacks with almost perfect obstruction theories have virtual structure sheaves which are deformation invariant. The main components in the construction are an induced embedding of the coarse moduli sheaf of the intrinsic normal cone into the associated obstruction sheaf stack and the construction of a $K$-theoretic Gysin map for sheaf stacks. We show that many stacks of interest admit almost perfect obstruction theories. As a result, we are able to define virtual structure sheaves and $K$-theo…
We prove a K-theoretic excess intersection formula for derived Artin stacks. When restricted to classical schemes, it gives a refinement and new proof of R. Thomason's formula.
We generalize the results of Chang-Li, Kim-Oh and Chang-Li on the moduli of $p$-fields to the setting of (quasi-)maps to complete intersections in arbitrary smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective coarse moduli. In particular, we show that the virtual cycle of stable (quasi-)maps to a complete intersection can be recovered by the cosection localized virtual cycle of the moduli of $p$-fields of the ambient space.
Let X be a smooth projective variety with the action of the n dimensional torus. The article describes the moduli space of torus equivariant morphisms from stable toric varieties into X as the inverse limit of the GIT quotients of X and their flips when these spaces are enhanced with a naturally associated Deligne-Mumford stack structure. This description is used for constructing a class in the Chow group of the moduli space of dimension dim(X)-n which is invariant to equivariant deformations of X.
This paper, first written in 1997, aims at a simplified and more elementary construction of algebraic-geometric virtual fundamental classes as defined by Li/Tian and Behrend/Fantechi. We replace the use of Artin stacks in the latter approach by a yoga of cone bundles of possible independent interest. We also observe a formula for virtual fundamental classes involving only the total Chern class of the index bundle and Fulton's canonical class of the moduli space.
We compute the number of points over finite fields of the character stack associated to a compact surface group and a reductive group with connected centre. We find that the answer is a Polynomial On Residue Classes (PORC). The key ingredients in the proof are Lusztig's Jordan decomposition of complex characters and Deriziotis's results on genus numbers of finite reductive groups. As a consequence of our main theorem, we obtain an expression for the $E$-polynomial of the character stack.
In this paper, we show that the (admissible) character stack, which is a stack version of the character variety, is an open substack of the Teichmüller stack of homogeneous spaces of SL(2,C). We show that the tautological family over the representation variety, given by deforming the holonomy, is always a complete family. This is a generalisation of the work of E. Ghys about deformations of complex structures these homogeneous spaces.
In this paper, we compute the virtual classes in the Grothendieck ring of algebraic varieties of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties over compact orientable surfaces with parabolic points of semi-simple type. When the parabolic punctures are chosen to be semi-simple non-generic, we show that a new interaction phenomenon appears generating a recursive pattern.
The purpose of the present paper is to develop the enumerative geometry of dormant $G$-opers for a semisimple algebraic group $G$. In the present paper, we construct a compact moduli stack admitting a perfect obstruction theory by introducing the notion of a dormant faithful twisted $G$-oper (or a "$G$-do'per", for short). The resulting virtual fundamental class induces a semisimple $2$d TQFT (= $2$-dimensional topological quantum field theory) counting the number of $G$-do'pers. This $2$d TQFT gives an analogue of the Witten-Kontsevich theorem describing the intersection numbers of psi classe…
We study the stack M of cameral covers for a complex reductive group G, introduced by Donagi and Gaitsgory. We compute its rational cohomology ring. In the special case G=GL(n), M is the stack of spectral covers. We also compute the cohomology ring of the stack of abstract regular G-Higgs bundles.
Enumerative invariants in Algebraic Geometry 'count' $τ$-(semi)stable objects $E$ with fixed topological invariants $[E]=a$ in some geometric problem, using a virtual class $[{\cal M}_a^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}$ in homology, for the moduli spaces ${\cal M}_a^{\rm st}(τ)\subseteq{\cal M}_a^{\rm ss}(τ)$ of $τ$-(semi)stable objects. We get numbers by taking integrals $\int_{[{\cal M}_a^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}}Υ$ for cohomology classes $Υ$. Let $\cal A$ be a $\mathbb C$-linear abelian category in Algebraic Geometry. There are two moduli stacks of objects in $\cal A$: the usual moduli stack $\cal M$…
Let [X/G] be a smooth Deligne-Mumford quotient stack. In a previous paper the authors constructed a class of exotic products called inertial products on K(I[X/G]), the Grothendieck group of vector bundles on the inertia stack I[X/G]. In this paper we develop a theory of Chern classes and compatible power operations for inertial products. When G is diagonalizable these give rise to an augmented $λ$-ring structure on inertial K-theory. One well-known inertial product is the virtual product. Our results show that for toric Deligne-Mumford stacks there is a $λ$-ring structure on inertial K-theory.…
Let $({\bf X},ω_{\bf X}^*)$ be a separated, $-2$-shifted symplectic derived $\mathbb C$-scheme, in the sense of Pantev, Toen, Vezzosi and Vaquie arXiv:1111.3209, of complex virtual dimension ${\rm vdim}_{\mathbb C}{\bf X}=n\in\mathbb Z$, and $X_{\rm an}$ the underlying complex analytic topological space. We prove that $X_{\rm an}$ can be given the structure of a derived smooth manifold ${\bf X}_{\rm dm}$, of real virtual dimension ${\rm vdim}_{\mathbb R}{\bf X}_{\rm dm}=n$. This ${\bf X}_{\rm dm}$ is not canonical, but is independent of choices up to bordisms fixing the underlying topological …
In this article, we derive many properties of étale stacks in various contexts, and prove that étale stacks may be characterized categorically as those stacks that arise as prolongations of stacks on a site of spaces and local homeomorphisms. Moreover, we show that the bicategory of étale differentiable stacks and local diffeomorphisms is equivalent to the 2-topos of stacks on the site of smooth manifolds and local diffeomorphisms. An analogous statement holds for other flavors of manifolds (topological, $C^k,$ complex, super...), and topological spaces locally homeomorphic to a given space $X…
