The derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind of integer degree with respect to its order, $\partial P_{n}^μ(z)/\partialμ$, is studied. After deriving and investigating general formulas for $μ$ arbitrary complex, a detailed discussion of $[\partial P_{n}^μ(z)/\partialμ]_{μ=\pm m}$, where $m$ is a non-negative integer, is carried out. The results are applied to obtain several explicit expressions for the associated Legendre function of the second kind of integer degree and order, $Q_{n}^{\pm m}(z)$. In particular, we arrive at formulas which generalize to the case of $Q_{n}^{\pm m}(z)$ ($0\leqslant m\leqslant n$) the well-known Christoffel's representation of the Legendre function of the second kind, $Q_{n}(z)$. The derivatives $[\partial^{2} P_{n}^μ(z)/\partialμ^{2}]_{μ=m}$, $[\partial Q_{n}^μ(z)/\partialμ]_{μ=m}$ and $[\partial Q_{-n-1}^μ(z)/\partialμ]_{μ=m}$, all with $m>n$, are also evaluated.
A relationship between partial derivatives of the associated Legendre function of the first kind with respect to its degree, $[\partial P_ν^{m}(z)/\partialν]_{ν=n}$, and to its order, $[\partial P_{n}^μ(z)/\partialμ]_{μ=m}$, is established for $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. This relationship is used to deduce four new closed-form representations of $[\partial P_ν^{m}(z)/\partialν]_{ν=n}$ from those found recently for $[\partial P_{n}^μ(z)/\partialμ]_{μ=m}$ by the present author [R. Szmytkowski, J. Math. Chem. 46 (2009) 231]. Several new expressions for the associated Legendre function of the second kind …
In a series of recent works, we have provided a number of explicit expressions for the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind with respect to its degree, $[\partial P_ν^{m}(z)/\partialν]_{ν=n}$, with $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. In this communication, we use some of those expressions to obtain several, we believe new, explicit formulas for the derivatives $\mathrm{d}^{m}[P_{n}(z)\ln(z\pm1)]/\mathrm{d}z^{m}$, where $P_{n}(z)$ is the Legendre polynomial.
Expressions for the derivatives of the Legendre polynomials of the first kind with respect to the order of these polynomials are given. An explicit form for the fourth derivative is presented.
In our recent works [R. Szmytkowski, J. Phys. A 39 (2006) 15147; corrigendum: 40 (2007) 7819; addendum: 40 (2007) 14887], we have investigated the derivative of the Legendre function of the first kind, $P_ν(z)$, with respect to its degree $ν$. In the present work, we extend these studies and construct several representations of the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind, $P_ν^{\pm m}(z)$, with respect to the degree $ν$, for $m\in\mathbb{N}$. At first, we establish several contour-integral representations of $\partial P_ν^{\pm m}(z)/\partialν$. They are then used to de…
We derive explicit expressions for the parameter derivatives $[\partial^{2}P_ν(z)/\partialν^{2}]_{ν=0}$ and $[\partial^{3}P_ν(z)/\partialν^{3}]_{ν=0}$, where $P_ν(z)$ is the Legendre function of the first kind. It is found that {displaymath} \frac{\partial^{2}P_ν(z)}{\partialν^{2}}\bigg|_{ν=0} =-2\Li_{2}\frac{1-z}{2}, {displaymath} where $\Li_{2}z$ is the dilogarithm (this formula has been recently arrived at by Schramkowski using \emph{Mathematica}), and that {displaymath} \frac{\partial^{3}P_ν(z)}{\partialν^{3}}\bigg|_{ν=0} =12\Li_{3}\frac{z+1}{2}-6\ln\frac{z+1}{2}\Li_{2}\frac{z+1}{2} -π^{2}…
In this paper, we show that the Dickson polynomials of the third kind satisfy a nonhomogeneous second order linear ordinary differential equation whose general solution contains Legendre functions.
In this paper, we study the scaling properties of Legendre polynomials Pn(x). We show that Pn(ax), where a is a constant, can be expanded as a sum of either Legendre polynomials Pn(x) or their multiple derivatives dkPn(x)/dxk, and we derive a general expression for the expansion coefficients. In addition, we demonstrate that the multiple derivative dkPn(x)/dxk can also be expressed as a sum of Legendre polynomials and we obtain a recurrence relation for the coefficients.
Expressions for the derivatives with respect to order of modified Bessel functions evaluated at integer orders and certain integral representations of associated Legendre functions with modulus argument greater than unity are used to compute derivatives of the associated Legendre functions with respect to their parameters. For the associated Legendre functions of the first and second kind, derivatives with respect to the degree are evaluated at odd-half-integer degrees, for general complex orders, and derivatives with respect to the order are evaluated at integer orders, for general complex de…
For the associated Legendre and Ferrers functions of the first and second kind, we obtain new multi-derivative and multi-integral representation formulas. The multi-integral representation formulas that we derive for these functions generalize some classical multi-integration formulas. As a result of the determination of these formulae, we compute some interesting special values and integral representations for certain particular combinations of the degree and order including the case where there is symmetry and antisymmetry for the degree and order parameters. As a consequence of our analysis…
For the Legendre-Stirling numbers of the second kind asymptotic formulae are derived in terms of a local central limit theorem. Thereby, supplements of the recently published asymptotic analysis of the Chebyshev-Stirling numbers are established. Moreover, we provide results on the asymptotic normality and unimodality for modified Legendre-Stirling numbers.
In this work we study the associated Legendre functions of the second kind with a purely imaginary argument $Q^k_\ell(\mathbb{i}\, x)$. We derive the conditions under which they provide a set of square integrable functions when $x \in \mathbb{R}$ and we prove the relevant orthogonality relation that they satisfy.
The use of operational methods of different nature is shown to be a fairly powerful tool to study different problems regarding the theory of Legendre and Legendre-like polynomials. We show how the use of the well known integral representations linking Hermite and Legendre like polynomials and of operational technique allow the derivation of new properties regarding the generating functions, repeated derivatives of irrational functions and so on. We finally extend the method of the integral transform to functions with more than one variable and derive new expansion criteria of a given function …
A closed-form formula is derived for the generalized Clebsch-Gordan integral $ \int_{-1}^1 {[}P_ν(x){]}^2P_ν(-x)\D x$, with $ P_ν$ being the Legendre function of arbitrary complex degree $ ν\in\mathbb C$. The finite Hilbert transform of $ P_ν(x)P_ν(-x),-1<x<1$ is evaluated. An analytic proof is provided for a recently conjectured identity $\int_0^1[\mathbf K(\sqrt{1-k^2})]^{3}\D k=6\int_0^1[\mathbf K(k)]^2\mathbf K(\sqrt{1-k^2})k\D k=[Γ(1/4)]^{8}/(128π^2) $ involving complete elliptic integrals of the first kind $ \mathbf K(k)$ and Euler's gamma function $ Γ(z)$.
For integral representations of associated Legendre functions in terms of modified Bessel functions, we establish justification for differentiation under the integral sign with respect to parameters. With this justification, derivatives for associated Legendre functions of the first and second kind with respect to the degree are evaluated at odd-half-integer degrees, for general complex-orders, and derivatives with respect to the order are evaluated at integer-orders, for general complex-degrees. We also discuss the properties of the complex function $f:{\mathbb C}\setminus\{-1,1\}\to{\mathbb …
Legendre's relation for the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds is generalized. The proof depends on an application of the generalized trigonometric functions and is alternative to the proof for Elliott's identity.
Trigonometric formulas are derived for certain families of associated Legendre functions of fractional degree and order, for use in approximation theory. These functions are algebraic, and when viewed as Gauss hypergeometric functions, belong to types classified by Schwarz, with dihedral, tetrahedral, or octahedral monodromy. The dihedral Legendre functions are expressed in terms of Jacobi polynomials. For the last two monodromy types, an underlying `octahedral' polynomial, indexed by the degree and order and having a non-classical kind of orthogonality, is identified, and recurrences for it a…
We provide closed-form expressions for the degree-derivatives $[\partial^{2}P_ν(z)/\partialν^{2}]_{ν=n}$ and $[\partial Q_ν(z)/\partialν]_{ν=n}$, with $z\in\mathbb{C}$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$, where $P_ν(z)$ and $Q_ν(z)$ are the Legendre functions of the first and the second kind, respectively. For $[\partial^{2}P_ν(z)/\partialν^{2}]_{ν=n}$, we find that $$\displaystyle\frac{\partial^{2}P_ν(z)}{\partialν^{2}}\bigg|_{ν=n}=-2P_{n}(z)\textrm{Li}_{2}\frac{1-z}{2}+B_{n}(z)\ln\frac{z+1}{2}+C_{n}(z),$$ where $\textrm{Li}_{2}[(1-z)/2]$ is the dilogarithm function, $P_{n}(z)$ is the Legendre polynomia…
We obtain definite integrals for products of associated Legendre functions with Bessel functions, associated Legendre functions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind using orthogonality and integral transforms.
Associated Legendre functions of fractional degree appear in the solution of boundary value problems in wedges or in toroidal geometries, and elsewhere in applied mathematics. In the classical case when the degree is half an odd integer, they can be expressed using complete elliptic integrals. In this study, many transformations are derived, which reduce the case when the degree differs from an integer by one-third, one-fourth or one-sixth to the classical case. These transformations, or identities, facilitate the symbolic manipulation and evaluation of Legendre and Ferrers functions. They gen…
This paper, pursuing the work started in [10] and [11], holds six new formulae for π, see equations, through ratios of first kind elliptic integrals and some values of hypergeometric functions of three or four variables of Lauricella type. This will be accomplished by reducing some hyperelliptic integrals to elliptic by the methods taught by Legendre in his treatise. Eventually, evaluating some hyperelliptic integrals by means of hypergeometric Lauricella functions, we obtain some further evaluations of themselves in some particular points and also in their analytic continuation.
We derive all eighteen Gauss hypergeometric representations for the Ferrers function of the second kind, each with a different argument. They are obtained from the eighteen hypergeometric representations of the associated Legendre function of the second kind by using a limit representation. For the 18 hypergeometric arguments which correspond to these representations, we give geometrical descriptions of the corresponding convergence regions in the complex plane. In addition, we consider a corresponding single sum Fourier expansion for the Ferrers function of the second kind. In four of the eig…
The main objective of this paper is to give a wide study on the conformable fractional Legendre polynomials (CFLPs). This study is assumed to be a generalization and refinement, in an easy way, of the scalar case into the context of the conformable fractional differentiation. We introduce the CFLPs via different generating functions and provide some of their main properties and convergence results. Subsequently, some pure recurrence and differential recurrence relations, Laplace's first integral formula and orthogonal properties are then developed for CFLPs. We append our study with presenting…
In this sequel to our recent note it is shown, in a unified manner, by making use of some basic properties of certain special functions, such as the Hurwitz zeta function, Lerch zeta function and Legendre chi function, that the values of all derivatives of four trigonometric functions at rational multiples of $π$ can be expressed in closed form as simple finite sums involving the Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. In addition, some particular cases are considered.
An explicit expression of the k-th derivative of the Bessel function $J_ν(z)$, with respect to its order $ν$, is given. Particularizations for the cases of positive or negative $ν$ are considered.
In this paper, sums represented in (3) are studied. The expressions are derived in terms of Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and their integrals. Further, we point out the integrals can be written as a Meijer G function.
The Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds were introduced in 2006 in the spectral theory and are polynomial refinements of the Legendre-Stirling numbers. Andrews and Littlejohn have recently given a combinatorial interpretation for the second kind of the latter numbers. Noticing that these numbers are very similar to the classical central factorial numbers, we give combinatorial interpretations for the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of both kinds, which provide a unified treatment of the combinatorial theories for the two previous sequences and also for the Stirling numbers of both ki…
Li et al. give an integral formula for the Catalan-Qi number of the second kind. They show that this integral can be written as a summation with double factorials. In this paper the integral is reduced to a product of the Catalan number and a hypergeometric function. This hypergeometric function can be written as an associated Legendre polynomial of the first kind. There are also connections with the incomplete Beta function and the Gegenbauer polynomials. In the last section a related integral is calculated.
In the paper, the author establishes some identities which show that the functions $\frac1{(1-e^{\pm t})^k}$ and the derivatives $\bigl(\frac1{e^{\pm t}-1}\bigr)^{(i)}$ can be expressed each other by linear combinations with coefficients involving the combinatorial numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind, where $t\ne0$ and $i,k\in\mathbb{N}$.
Numerous novel integral and series representations for Ferrers functions of the first kind (associated Legendre functions on the cut) of arbitrary degree and order, various integral, series and differential relations connecting Ferrers functions of different orders and degrees as well as a uniform asymptotic expansion are derived in this article. Simple proofs of four generating functions for Ferrers functions are given. Addition theorems for Ferrers functions of the argument tanh(a+b) are proved by basing on generation functions for three families of hypergeometric polynomials. Relations for …
We prove that for $ν>n-1$ all zeros of the $n$th derivative of Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν$ are real and simple. Moreover, we show that the positive zeros of the $n$th and $(n+1)$th derivative of Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν$ are interlacing when $ν\geq n,$ and $n$ is a natural number or zero. Our methods include the Weierstrassian representation of the $n$th derivative, properties of the Laguerre-Pólya class of entire functions, and the Laguerre inequalities. Some similar results for the zeros of the first and second derivative of the Struve function of the first kind $\m…
Motivated by our previous work on hypergeometric functions and the parbelos constant, we perform a deeper investigation on the interplay among generalized complete elliptic integrals, Fourier-Legendre (FL) series expansions, and ${}_p F_q$ series. We produce new hypergeometric transformations and closed-form evaluations for new series involving harmonic numbers, through the use of the integration method outlined as follows: Letting $K$ denote the complete elliptic integral of the first kind, for a suitable function $g$ we evaluate integrals such as $$ \int_{0}^{1} K\left( \sqrt{x} \right) g(x)…
In this paper necessary and sufficient conditions are deduced for the starlikeness of Bessel functions of the first kind and their derivatives of the second and third order by using a result of Shah and Trimble about transcendental entire functions with univalent derivatives and some Mittag-Leffler expansions for the derivatives of Bessel functions of the first kind, as well as some results on the zeros of these functions.
Associated Legendre functions of the first kind give a family of BCOV rings on elliptic curves. We prove that the family is parametrized by $q$-exponents of the eta function $η(q^{24})$. Our method involves a classification of rational solutions of a Riccati equation under some constraints.
By starting with Durand's double integral representation for a product of two Jacobi functions of the second kind, we derive an integral representation for a product of two Jacobi functions of the second kind in kernel form. We also derive a Bateman-type sum for a product of two Jacobi functions of the second kind. From this integral representation we derive integral representations for the Jacobi function of the first kind in both the hyperbolic and trigonometric contexts. From the integral representations for Jacobi functions, we also derive integral representations for products of limiting …
We introduce two kinds of fractional integral operators; the one is defined via the exponential-integral function $$ E_1(x)=\int_x^\infty \frac{e^{-t}}{t}\,dt,\quad x>0, $$ and the other is defined via the special function $$ \mathcal{S}(x)=e^{-x} \int_0^\infty \frac{x^{s-1}}{Γ(s)}\,ds,\quad x>0. $$ We establish different properties of these operators, and we study the relationship between the fractional integrals of first kind and the fractional integrals of second kind. Next, we introduce a new concept of fractional derivative of order $α>0$, which is defined via the fractional integral of f…
In this paper our aim is to deduce some sufficient (and necessary) conditions for the close-to-convexity of some special functions and their derivatives, like Bessel functions, Struve functions, and a particular case of Lommel functions of the first kind, which can be expressed in terms of the hypergeometric function ${}_1F_2$. The key tool in our proofs is a result of Shah and Trimble about transcendental entire functions with univalent derivatives. Moreover, a known result of Pólya on entire functions, the infinite product representations and some results on zeros of Bessel, Struve and Lomme…
The order derivatives of the modified Bessel function of the second kind at s = .5 are obtained as finite expressions of integrals that generalize the exponential integral appearing in the first derivative (Theorem 1.) The derivatives arise in the investigation of a BesselK relationship with the Riemann zeta function. Any use of the term, derivative, with respect to a Bessel function, here means a derivative with respect to its order.
In this paper necessary and sufficient conditions are deduced for the close-to-convexity of some special combinations of Bessel functions of the first kind and their derivatives by using a result of Shah and Trimble about transcendental entire functions with univalent derivatives and some newly discovered Mittag-Leffler expansions for Bessel functions of the first kind.
In the paper, by establishing a new and explicit formula for computing the $n$-th derivative of the reciprocal of the logarithmic function, the author presents new and explicit formulas for calculating Bernoulli numbers of the second kind and Stirling numbers of the first kind. As consequences of these formulas, a recursion for Stirling numbers of the first kind and a new representation of the reciprocal of the factorial $n!$ are derived. Finally, the author finds several identities and integral representations relating to Stirling numbers of the first kind.
