Let $R$ be an associative ring with identity, $C(R)$ denote the center of $R$, and $g(x)$ be a polynomial in the polynomial ring $C(R)[x]$. $R$ is called strongly $g(x)$-clean if every element $r \in R$ can be written as $r=s+u$ with $g(s)=0$, $u$ a unit of $R$, and $su=us$. The relation between strongly $g(x)$-clean rings and strongly clean rings is determined, some general properties of strongly $g(x)$-clean rings are given, and strongly $g(x)$-clean rings generated by units are discussed.
Motivated by the concept of weakly clean rings, we introduce the concept of weakly $r$-clean rings. We define an element $x$ of a ring $R$ as weakly $r$-clean if it can be expressed as $x=r+e$ or $x=r-e$ where $e$ is an idempotent and $r$ is a regular element of $R$. If all the elements of $R$ are weakly $r$-clean then $R$ is called a weakly $r$-clean ring. We discuss some of its properties in this article. The literature about strongly clean matrices over commutative rings is quite extensive. The sharpest results are about matrices over commutative local rings, for example those by Borooah, Diesl and Dorsey. The purpose of this note is to show that, using Pierce sheaf techniques, many of the known results about matrices over commutative local rings can be extended to those over commutative clean rings in general.

We introduce the concept of a weak nil clean ring, a generalization of nil clean ring, which is nothing but a ring with unity in which every element can be expressed as sum or difference of a nilpotent and an idempotent. Further if the idempotent and nilpotent commute the ring is called weak* nil clean. We characterize all $n\in \mathbb{N}$, for which $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is weak nil clean but not nil clean. An element $a$ of a ring $R$ is called perfectly clean if there exists an idempotent $e\in comm^2(a)$ such that $a-e\in U(R)$. A ring $R$ is perfectly clean in case every element in $R$ is perfectly clean. In this paper, we investigate conditions on a local ring $R$ that imply that $2\times 2$ matrix rings and triangular matrix rings are perfectly clean. We shall show that for these rings perfect cleanness and strong cleanness coincide with each other, and enhance many known results. In this paper we discuss several constructions that lead to new examples of nil-clean, clean, and exchange rings. A characterization of the idempotents in the algebra defined by a 2-cocycle is given and used to prove some of the algebra's properties (the infinitesimal deformation case). From infinitesimal deformations we go to full deformations and prove that any formal deformation of a clean (exchange) ring is itself clean (exchange). Examples of nil-clean, clean, and exchange rings arising from poset algebras are also discussed.
An element of a ring R is called clean if it is the sum of an idempotent and a unit. A ring R is called clean if each of its element is clean. An element r \in R called regular if r = ryr for some y \in R. The ring R is regular if each of its element is regular. In this paper we define a ring is r-clean if each of its elements is the sum of a regular and an idempotent element. We give some relations between r-clean and clean rings. Finally we investigate some properties of r-clean rings.
Question 3 of [3] asks whether the matrix ring Mn(R) is nil clean, for any nil clean ring R. Let n be an arbitrary natural number. The class of (strongly) n-torsion clean rings is introduced and investigated. Abelian n-torsion clean rings are somewhat characterized and a complete characterization of strongly n-torsion clean rings is given in the case when n is odd. Some open questions are posed at the end.
In this paper we introduce and study the notion of a graded (strongly) nil clean ring which is group graded. We also deal with extensions of graded (strongly) nil clean rings to graded matrix rings and to graded group rings. The question of when nil cleanness of the component, which corresponds to the neutral element of a group, implies graded nil cleanness of the whole graded ring is examined. Similar question is discussed in the case of groupoid graded rings as well.
An element of a ring $R$ is strongly $P$-clean provided that it can be written as the sum of an idempotent and a strongly nilpotent element that commute. A ring $R$ is strongly $P$-clean in case each of its elements is strongly $P$-clean. We investigate, in this article, the necessary and sufficient conditions under which a ring $R$ is strongly $P$-clean. Many characterizations of such rings are obtained. The criteria on strong $P$-cleanness of $2\times 2$ matrices over commutative local rings are also determined.
A ring $R$ is called strongly clean if every element of $R$ is the sum of a unit and an idempotent that commute with each other. A recent result of Borooah, Diesl and Dorsey \cite{BDD05a} completely characterized the commutative local rings $R$ for which ${\mathbb M}_n(R)$ is strongly clean. In this article, we introduce the concept of weakly $I$-clean ring, for any ideal $I$ of a ring $R$. We show that, for an ideal $I$ of a ring $R$, $R$ is uniquely weakly $I$-clean if and only if $R/I$ is semi boolean and idempotents can be lifted uniquely weakly modulo $I$ if and only if for each $a\in R$, there exists a central idempotent $e\in R$ such that either $a-e\in I$ or $a+e\in I$ and $I$ is idempotent free. As a corollary, we characterize weakly $J$-clean ring. Also we study various properties of weakly $I$-clean ring.
Motivated by the concept of clean index of rings, we introduce the concept of weak clean index of rings. For any element $a$ of a ring $R$ with unity, we define $ χ(a)=\{e\in R\mid e^2=e\text{ and }a-e \mbox{ or } a+e \mbox{ is a unit}\}$. The weak clean index of $R$ is defined as $\sup \{|χ(a)|: a\in R\}$ and it is denoted by $\win(R),$ where $| χ(a)| $ denotes the cardinality of the set $χ(a)$. A ring $R$ is periodic provided that for any $a\ in R$ there exist distinct elements $m,n \in {\Bbb N}$ such that $a^m=a^n$. We shall prove that periodicity is inherited by a type of generalized matrix rings.We define strongly periodic rings and determine completely the connections between these ones and periodic rings. Moreover, we characterize J-clean like rings and obtain the relations among these rings.
Let $R$ be a commutative local ring. It is proved that $R$ is Henselian if and only if each $R$-algebra which is a direct limit of module finite $R$-algebras is strongly clean. So, the matrix ring $\mathbb{M}_n(R)$ is strongly clean for each integer $n>0$ if $R$ is Henselian and we show that the converse holds if either the residue class field of $R$ is algebraically closed or $R$ is an integrally closed domain or $R$ is a valuation ring. It is also shown that each $R$-algebra which is locally a direct limit of module-finite algebras, is strongly clean if $R$ is a $π$-regular commutative ring.
We define the concepts of weakly precious and precious rings which generalize the notions of weakly clean and nil-clean rings. We obtain some fundamental properties of these rings. We also obtain certain subclasses of such rings and then offer new kinds of weakly clean rings and nil-clean rings.

Many authors have investigated the behavior of strong cleanness under certain ring extensions. In this note, we prove that if $R$ is a ring which is complete with respect to an ideal $I$ and if $x$ is an element of $R$ whose image in $R/I$ is strongly $π$-regular, then $x$ is strongly clean in $R$.
A ring R is Zhou nil-clean if every element in R is the sum of two tripotents and a nilpotent that commute. Let R be a Zhou nil-clean ring. If R is 2-primal (of bounded index), we prove that every square matrix over R is the sum of two tripotents and a nilpotent. These provides a large class of rings over which every square matrix has such decompositions by tripotent and nilpotent matrices.
A ring R is a strongly 2-nil-clean if every element in R is the sum of two idempotents and a nilpotent that commute. A ring R is feebly clean if every element in R is the sum of two orthogonal idempotents and a unit. We construct an example of a unit-regular ring which is not strongly clean, answering an open question of Nicholson. We also characterize clean matrices with a zero column, and this allows us to describe an interesting connection between unit-regular elements and clean elements. It is also proven that given an element $a$ in a ring $R$, if $a,a^2,\ldots, a^k$ are all regular elements in $R$ (for some $k\geq 1$), then there exists $w\in R$ such that $a^{i}w^{i}a^{i}=a^{i}$ for $1\leq i\leq k$, and a similar statement holds for unit-regular elements. A ring $R$ is nil-clean if every element in $R$ is the sum of an idempotent and a nilpotent. A ring $R$ is abelian if every idempotent is central. We prove that if $R$ is abelian then $M_n(R)$ is nil-clean if and only if $R/J(R)$ is Boolean and $M_n(J(R))$ is nil. We provide a few results about two new variations of these concepts and discuss the theory that ties these variations to objects and properties of interest to noncommutative algebraists. A ring $R$ is uniquely (strongly) clean provided that for any $a\in R$ there exists a unique idempotent $e\in R \big(\in comm(a)\big)$ such that $a-e\in U(R)$. Let $R$ be a uniquely bleached ring. We prove, in this note, that $R$ is uniquely clean if and only if $R$ is abelian, and $T_n(R)$ is uniquely strongly clean for all $n\geq 1$, if and only if $R$ is abelian, $T_n(R)$ is uniquely strongly clean for some $n\geq 1$. In the commutative case, the more explicit results are obtained. These also generalize the main theorems in [6] and [7], and provide many new class of such rings.

A ring $R$ is trinil clean if every element in $R$ is the sum of a tripotent and a nilpotent. If $R$ is a 2-primal strongly 2-nil-clean ring, we prove that $M_n(R)$ is trinil clean for all $n\in {\Bbb N}$. Furthermore, we show that the matrix ring over a strongly 2-nil-clean ring of bounded index is trinil clean. We thereby provide various type of rings over which every matrix is the sum of a tripotent and a nilpotent.

Let $T_n(R,σ)$ be the skew triangular matrix ring over a local ring $R$ where $σ$ is an endomorphism of $R$. We show that $T_2(R,σ)$ is strongly clean if and only if for any $a\in 1+J(R), b\in J(R)$, $l_a-r_{σ(b)}: R\to R$ is surjective. Further, $T_3(R,σ)$ is strongly clean if $l_{a}-r_{σ(b)}, l_{a}-r_{σ^2(b)}$ and $l_{b}-r_{σ(a)}$ are surjective for any $a\in U(R),b\in J(R)$. The necessary condition for $T_3(R,σ)$ to be strongly clean is also obtained.

As a generalization of nil clean ideal, we define weak nil clean ideal of a ring. An ideal $I$ of a ring $R$ is weak nil clean ideal if for any $x\in I$, either $x=e+n$ or $x=-e+n$, where $n$ is a nilpotent element and $e$ is an idempotent element of $R$. Some interesting properties of weak nil clean ideal and its relation with weak nil clean ring have been discussed.
We introduce and investigate the so-called D-regularly nil clean rings by showing that these rings are, in fact, a non-trivial generalization of the classical von Neumann regular rings and of the strongly $π$-regular rings.
