We consider a repeated quantum interaction model describing a small system $\Hh_S$ in interaction with each one of the identical copies of the chain $\bigotimes_{\N^*}\C^{n+1}$, modeling a heat bath, one after another during the same short time intervals $[0,h]$. We suppose that the repeated quantum interaction Hamiltonian is split in two parts: a free part and an interaction part with time scale of order $h$. After giving the GNS representation, we establish the relation between the time scale $h$ and the classical low density limit. We introduce a chemical potential $μ$ related to the time $h$ as follows: $h^2=e^{βμ}$. We further prove that the solution of the associated discrete evolution equation converges strongly, when $h$ tends to 0, to the unitary solution of a quantum Langevin equation directed by Poisson processes.
We consider the physical model of a classical mechanical system (called "small system") undergoing repeated interactions with a chain of identical small pieces (called "environment"). This physical setup constitutes an advantageous way of implementing dissipation for classical systems, it is at the same time Hamiltonian and Markovian. This kind of model has already been studied in the context of quantum mechanical systems, where it was shown to give rise to quantum Langevin equations in the limit of continuous time interactions ([2]), but it has never been considered for classical mechanical s…
We consider the general physical situation of a quantum system $\H_0$ interacting with a chain of exterior systems $\bigotimes_\N \H$, one after the other, during a small interval of time $h$ and following some Hamiltonian $H$ on $\H_0 \otimes \H$. We discuss the passage to the limit to continuous interactions ($h \to 0$) in a setup which allows to compute the limit of this Hamiltonian evolution in a single state space: a continuous field of exterior systems $\otimes_{\R} \H$. Surprisingly, the passage to the limit shows the necessity for 3 different time scales in $H$. The limit evolution equ…
We study the small-mass (overdamped) limit of Langevin equations for a particle in a potential and/or magnetic field with matrix-valued and state-dependent drift and diffusion. We utilize a bootstrapping argument to derive a hierarchy of approximate equations for the position degrees of freedom that are able to achieve accuracy of order $m^{\ell/2}$ over compact time intervals for any $\ell\in\mathbb{Z}^+$. This generalizes prior derivations of the homogenized equation for the position degrees of freedom in the $m\to 0$ limit, which result in order $m^{1/2}$ approximations. Our results cover b…
We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat at the origin. In the high frequency limit, we establish the reflection-transmission coefficients for the wave energy for the scattering of the thermostat. To our surprise, even though the thermostat fluctuations are time-dependent, the scattering does not couple wave energy at various frequencies.
We construct an infinite particle/infinite volume Langevin dynamics on the space of configurations in $\R^d$ having velocities as marks. The construction is done via a limiting procedure using $N$-particle dynamics in cubes $(-λ,λ]^d$ with periodic boundary conditions. A main step to this result is to derive an (improved) Ruelle bound for the canonical correlation functions of $N$-particle systems in $(-λ,λ]^d$ with periodic boundary conditions. After proving tightness of the laws of finite particle dynamics, the identification of accumulation points as martingale solutions of the Langevin equ…
We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat attached at the origin and energy, momentum and volume conserving noise that models the collisions between atoms. The noise is rarefied in the limit, {that corresponds to the hypothesis} that in the macroscopic unit time only a finite number of collisions takes place (Boltzmann-Grad limit). We prove that, after the hyperbolic space-time rescaling, the Wigner distribution, describing the energy density of phonons in space-frequency domain, converges to a positive energy density function $W(t, y, k)$ that ev…
We study homogenization for a class of generalized Langevin equations (GLEs) with state-dependent coefficients and exhibiting multiple time scales. In addition to the small mass limit, we focus on homogenization limits, which involve taking to zero the inertial time scale and, possibly, some of the memory time scales and noise correlation time scales. The latter are meaningful limits for a class of GLEs modeling anomalous diffusion. We find that, in general, the limiting stochastic differential equations (SDEs) for the slow degrees of freedom contain non-trivial drift correction terms and are …
In this note, we establish that the stationary distribution of a possibly non-equilibrium Langevin diffusion converges, as the damping parameter goes to infinity (or equivalently in the Smoluchowski-Kramers vanishing mass limit), toward a tensor product of the stationary distribution of the corresponding overdamped process and of a Gaussian distribution.
A class of Langevin stochastic differential equations is shown to converge in the small-mass limit under very weak assumptions on the coefficients defining the equation. The convergence result is applied to physically realizable examples where the coefficients defining the Langevin equation grow unboundedly either at a boundary, such as a wall, and/or at the point at infinity.
Consider the Langevin process, described by a vector (positions and momenta) in $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^d$. Let $\mathcal O$ be a $\mathcal{C}^2$ open bounded and connected set of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Recent works showed the existence of a unique quasi-stationary distribution (QSD) of the Langevin process on the domain $D:=\mathcal{O}\times\mathbb{R}^d$. In this article, we study the overdamped limit of this QSD, i.e. when the friction coefficient goes to infinity. In particular, we show that the marginal law in position of the overdamped limit is the QSD of the overdamped Langevin process …
In this paper, we prove convergence in distribution of Langevin processes in the overdamped asymptotics. The proof relies on the classical perturbed test function (or corrector) method, which is used both to show tightness in path space, and to identify the extracted limit with a martingale problem. The result holds assuming the continuity of the gradient of the potential energy, and a mild control of the initial kinetic energy.
We consider a locally regulated spatial population model introduced by Bolker and Pacala. Based on the deterministic approximation studied by Fournier and Méléard, we prove that the fluctuation theorem holds under some mild moment conditions. The limiting process is shown to be an infinite-dimensional Gaussian process solving a generalized Langevin equation. In particular, we further consider its properties in one-dimension case, which is characterized as a time-inhomogeneous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
We study a class of systems whose dynamics are described by generalized Langevin equations with state-dependent coefficients. We find that in the limit, in which all the characteristic time scales vanish at the same rate, the position variable of the system converges to a homogenized process, described by an equation containing additional drift terms induced by the noise. The convergence results are obtained using the main result in \cite{hottovy2015smoluchowski}, whose version is proven here under a weaker spectral assumption on the damping matrix. We apply our results to study thermophoresis…
We study asymptotic properties of the Generalized Langevin Equation (GLE) in the presence of a wide class of external potential wells with a power-law decay memory kernel. When the memory can be expressed as a sum of exponentials, a class of Markovian systems in infinite-dimensional spaces is used to represent the GLE. The solutions are shown to converge in probability in the small-mass limit and the white-noise limit to appropriate systems under minimal assumptions, of which no Lipschitz condition is required on the potentials. With further assumptions about space regularity and potentials, w…
In [20], the authors addressed the question of the averaging of a slow-fast Piecewise Deterministic Markov Process (PDMP) in infinite dimension. In the present paper, we carry on and complete this work by the mathematical analysis of the fluctuation of the slow-fast system around the averaged limit. A central limit theorem is derived and the associated Langevin approximation is considered. The motivation of this work is a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model which describes the propagation of an action potential along the nerve fiber. We study this PDMP in detail and provide more general results fo…
We study functionals, such as heat and work, along trajectories of a class of multi-dimensional generalized Langevin systems in various limiting situations that correspond to different level of homogenization. These are the situations where one or more of the inertial time scale(s), the memory time scale(s) and the noise correlation time scale(s) of the systems are taken to zero. We find that, unless one restricts to special situations that do not break symmetry of the Onsager matrix associated with the fast dynamics, it is generally not possible to express the effective evolution of these fun…
In the present work we derive a Central Limit Theorem for sequences of Hilbert-valued Piecewise Deterministic Markov process models and their global fluctuations around their deterministic limit identified by the Law of Large Numbers. We provide a version of the limiting fluctuations processes in the form of a distribution valued stochastic partial differential equation which can be the starting point for further theoretical and numerical analysis. We also present applications of our results to two examples of hybrid models of spatially extended excitable membranes: compartmental-type neuron m…
In this paper, we study different scaling rough path limit regimes in space and time for the Langevin dynamics on a quasi-planar fluctuating Helfrich surfaces. The convergence results of the processes were already proven in the work by Duncan, Elliott, Pavliotis and Stuart (2015). We extend this work by proving the convergence of the Itô and Stratonovich rough path lift. For the rough path limit, there appears, typically, an area correction term to the Itô iterated integrals, and in certain regimes to the Stratonovich iterated integrals. This yields additional information on the homogenization…
In this paper, we study the small noise behaviour of solutions of a non-linear second order Langevin equation $\ddot x^\varepsilon_t +|\dot x^\varepsilon_t|^β=\dot Z^\varepsilon_{\varepsilon t}$, $β\in\mathbb R$, driven by symmetric non-Gaussian Lévy processes $Z^\varepsilon$. This equation describes the dynamics of a one-degree-of-freedom mechanical system subject to non-linear friction and noisy vibrations. For a compound Poisson noise, the process $x^\varepsilon$ on the macroscopic time scale $t/\varepsilon$ has a natural interpretation as a non-linear filter which responds to each single j…
Diffusion limits provide a framework for the asymptotic analysis of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) schemes used in machine learning. We consider an alternative framework, the Riemannian Langevin equation (RLE), that generalizes the classical paradigm of equilibration in R^n to a Riemannian manifold (M^n, g). The most subtle part of this equation is the description of Brownian motion on (M^n, g). Explicit formulas are presented for some fundamental cones.
In this study we consider limit theorems for microscopic stochastic models of neural fields. We show that the Wilson-Cowan equation can be obtained as the limit in probability on compacts for a sequence of microscopic models when the number of neuron populations distributed in space and the number of neurons per population tend to infinity. Though the latter divergence is not necessary. This result also allows to obtain limits for qualitatively different stochastic convergence concepts, e.g., convergence in the mean. Further, we present a central limit theorem for the martingale part of the mi…
We discuss the ergodic properties of quasi-Markovian stochastic differential equations, providing general conditions that ensure existence and uniqueness of a smooth invariant distribution and exponential convergence of the evolution operator in suitably weighted $L^{\infty}$ spaces, which implies the validity of central limit theorem for the respective solution processes. The main new result is an ergodicity condition for the generalized Langevin equation with configuration-dependent noise and (non-)conservative force.
Adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo (AMCMC) is a class of MCMC algorithms where the proposal distribution changes at every iteration of the chain. In this case it is important to verify that such a Markov Chain indeed has a stationary distribution. In this paper we discuss a diffusion approximation to a discrete time AMCMC. This diffusion approximation is different when compared to the diffusion approximation as in Gelman, Gilks and Roberts (1997) where the state space increases in dimension to infinity. In our approach the time parameter is sped up in such a way that the limiting distribution (…

We describe a new MCMC method optimized for the sampling of probability measures on Hilbert space which have a density with respect to a Gaussian; such measures arise in the Bayesian approach to inverse problems, and in conditioned diffusions. Our algorithm is based on two key design principles: (i) algorithms which are well-defined in infinite dimensions result in methods which do not suffer from the curse of dimensionality when they are applied to approximations of the infinite dimensional target measure on $\bbR^N$; (ii) non-reversible algorithms can have better mixing properties compared t…
In recent papers it has been demonstrated that sampling a Gibbs distribution from an appropriate time-irreversible Langevin process is, from several points of view, advantageous when compared to sampling from a time-reversible one. Adding an appropriate irreversible drift to the overdamped Langevin equation results in a larger large deviations rate function for the empirical measure of the process, a smaller variance for the long time average of observables of the process, as well as a larger spectral gap. In this work, we concentrate on irreversible Langevin samplers with a drift of increasin…
Given a target distribution $μ$ on a general state space $\mathcal{X}$ and a proposal Markov jump process with generator $Q$, the purpose of this paper is to investigate two universal properties enjoyed by two types of Metropolis-Hastings (MH) processes with generators $M_1(Q,μ)$ and $M_2(Q,μ)$ respectively. First, we motivate our study of $M_2$ by offering a geometric interpretation of $M_1$, $M_2$ and their convex combinations as $L^1$ minimizers between $Q$ and the set of $μ$-reversible generators of Markov jump processes. Second, specializing into the case of $\mathcal{X} = \mathbb{R}^d$ a…
The Metropolis-adjusted Langevin (MALA) algorithm is a sampling algorithm which makes local moves by incorporating information about the gradient of the logarithm of the target density. In this paper we study the efficiency of MALA on a natural class of target measures supported on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. These natural measures have density with respect to a Gaussian random field measure and arise in many applications such as Bayesian nonparametric statistics and the theory of conditioned diffusions. We prove that, started in stationarity, a suitably interpolated and scaled vers…
