The main result of this paper is an application of the topology of the space $Q(X)$ to obtain results for the cohomology of the symmetric group on $d$ letters, $Σ_d$, with `twisted' coefficients in various choices of Young modules and to show that these computations reduce to certain natural questions in representation theory. The authors extend classical methods for analyzing the homology of certain spaces $Q(X)$ with mod-$p$ coefficients to describe the homology $\HH_{\bullet}(Σ_d, V^{\otimes d})$ as a module for the general linear group $GL(V)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$. As a direct application, these results provide a method of reducing the computation of $\text{Ext}^{\bullet}_{Σ_{d}}(Y^λ,Y^μ)$ (where $Y^λ$, $Y^μ$ are Young modules) to a representation theoretic problem involving the determination of tensor products and decomposition numbers. In particular, in characteristic two, for many $d$, a complete determination of $\Hs Y^λ)$ can be found. This is the first nontrivial class of symmetric group modules where a complete description of the cohomology in all degrees can be given. For arbitrary $d$ the authors determine $\HH^i(Σ_d,Y^λ)$ for $i=0,1,2$. An interesting phenomenon is uncovered--namely a stability result reminiscent of generic cohomology for algebraic groups. For each $i$ the cohomology $\HH^i(Σ_{p^ad}, Y^{p^aλ})$ stabilizes as $a$ increases. The methods in this paper are also powerful enough to determine, for any $p$ and $λ$, precisely when $\HH^{\bullet}(\sd,Y^λ)=0$. Such modules with vanishing cohomology are of great interest in representation theory because their support varieties constitute the representation theoretic nucleus.
In this paper we revisit the cohomology groups of the moduli space of $n$-pointed curves of genus zero using the FI-module perspective introduced by Church-Ellenberg-Farb. We recover known results about the corresponding representations of the symmetric group.
In this paper, we review the construction of the Dirac operator for graded affine Hecke algebras and calculate the Dirac cohomology of irreducible unitary modules for the graded Hecke algebra of gl(n).
Over a field of characteristic p > 2, the first cohomology of the special linear Lie superalgebra sl(2,1) with coefficients in all \c{hi}-reduced Kac modules and simple modules is determined by use of the weight space decompositions of these modules relative to the standard Cartan subalgebra of sl(2,1).
In this paper we apply the theory of finitely generated FI-modules developed by Church, Ellenberg and Farb to certain sequences of rational cohomology groups. Our main examples are the cohomology of the moduli space of n-pointed curves, the cohomology of the pure mapping class group of surfaces and some manifolds of higher dimension, and the cohomology of classifying spaces of some diffeomorphism groups. We introduce the notion of FI[G]-module and use it to strengthen and give new context to results on representation stability discussed by the author in a previous paper. Moreover, we prove tha…
We develop a local cohomology theory for FI$^m$-modules, and show that it in many ways mimics the classical theory for multi-graded modules over a polynomial ring. In particular, we define an invariant of FI$^m$-modules using this local cohomology theory which closely resembles an invariant of multi-graded modules over Cox rings defined by Maclagan and Smith. It is then shown that this invariant behaves almost identically to the invariant of Maclagan and Smith.
This paper studies the Dirac cohomology of standard modules in the setting of graded Hecke algebras with geometric parameters. We prove that the Dirac cohomology of a standard module vanishes if and only if the module is not twisted-elliptic tempered. The proof makes use of two deep results. One is some structural information from the generalized Springer correspondence obtained by S. Kato and Lusztig. Another one is a computation of the Dirac cohomology of tempered modules by Barbasch-Ciubotaru-Trapa and Ciubotaru. We apply our result to compute the Dirac cohomology of ladder representations …
We calculate the cohomology of $\mathfrak{sl}_3(k)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>3$ with coefficients in simple modules and Weyl modules. We also give descriptions of the corresponding cohomology of $\mathfrak{gl}_3(k)$.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a reductive Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$. For any simple weight module of $\mathfrak{g}$ with finite-dimensional weight spaces, we show that its Dirac cohomology is vanished unless it is a highest weight module. This completes the calculation of Dirac cohomology for simple weight modules since the Dirac cohomology of simple highest weight modules was carried out in our previous work. We also show that the Dirac index pairing of two weight modules which have infinitesimal characters agrees with their Euler-Poincaré pairing. The analogue of this result for Harish-Chandra m…
We modify the definition of Dirac cohomology in such a way that the standard properties of the usual Dirac cohomology, valid for modules with infinitesimal character, become valid also for modules with only generalized infinitesimal character.
Let $G$ be the simple algebraic group $SL_2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper, we find the second cohomology of all irreducible representations of $G$
We study the Lie module structure given by the Gerstenhaber bracket on the Hochschild cohomology groups of a monomial algebra with radical square zero. The description of such Lie module structure will be given in terms of the combinatorics of the quiver. The Lie module structure will be related to the classification of finite dimensional modules over simple Lie algebras when the quiver is given by the two loops and the ground field is the complex numbers.
Recently Donkin defined signed Young modules as a simultaneous generalization of Young and twisted Young modules for the symmetric group. We show that in odd characteristic, if a Specht module $S^λ$ is irreducible, then $S^λ$ is a signed Young module. Thus the set of irreducible Specht modules coincides with the set of irreducible signed Young modules. This provides evidence for our conjecture that the signed Young modules are precisely the class of indecomposable self-dual modules with Specht filtrations. The theorem is false in characteristic two.
In this paper we describe a machinery for homological calculations of representations of FI_G, and use it to develop a local cohomology theory over any commutative Noetherian ring. As an application, we show that the depth introduced by the second author coincides with a more classical invariant from commutative algebra, and obtain upper bounds of a few important invariants of FI_G-modules in terms of torsion degrees of their local cohomology groups.
Cohomology of Specht modules for the symmetric group can be equated in low degrees with corresponding cohomology for the Borel subgroup B of the general linear group GL_d(k), but this has never been exploited to prove new symmetric group results. Using work of Doty on the submodule structure of symmetric powers of the natural GL_d(k) module together with work of Andersen on cohomology for B and its Frobenius kernels, we prove new results about H^i(Σ_d, S^λ). We recover work of James in the case i=0. Then we prove two stability theorems, one of which is a "generic cohomology" result for Specht …
We study the multiplicities of Young modules as direct summands of permutation modules on cosets of Young subgroups. Such multiplicities have become known as the p-Kostka numbers. We classify the indecomposable Young permutation modules, and, applying the Brauer construction for p-permutation modules, we give some new reductions for p-Kostka numbers. In particular we prove that p-Kostka numbers are preserved under multiplying partitions by p, and strengthen a known reduction given by Henke, corresponding to adding multiples of a p-power to the first row of a partition.
Let G be a finite group scheme over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Assume further that the connected component of G is unipotent. It is shown that the projectivity of a rational G-module can be detected on a family of closed subgroups. It is further shown that nilpotent cohomology or extension classes can be detected on this family of subgroups.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $2$ and let $H$ be a finite group or group scheme. We show that the negative Tate cohomology ring $\widehat{\text{H}}^{\leq 0}(H,k)$ can be realized as the endomorphism ring of the trivial module in a Verdier localization of the stable category of $kG$-modules for $G$ an extension of $H$. This means in some cases that the endomorphism of the trivial module is a local ring with infinitely generated radical with square zero. This stands in stark contrast to some known calculations in which the endomorphism ring of the trivial module is the degree zero compone…
By a result of Hemmer, every simple Specht module of a finite symmetric group over a field of odd characteristic is a signed Young module. While Specht modules are parametrized by partitions, indecomposable signed Young modules are parametrized by certain pairs of partitions. The main result of this article establishes the signed Young module labels of simple Specht modules. Along the way we prove a number of results concerning indecomposable signed Young modules that are of independent interest. In particular, we determine the label of the indecomposable signed Young module obtained by tensor…
For a Specht module S^λfor the symmetric group Σ_d, the cohomology H^i(Σ_d, S^λ) is known only in degree i=0. We give a combinatorial criterion equivalent to the nonvanishing of the degree i=1 cohomology, valid in odd characteristic. Our condition generalizes James' solution in degree zero. We apply this combinatorial description to give some computations of Specht module cohomology, together with an explicit description of the corresponding modules. Finally we suggest some general conjectures that might be particularly amenable to proof using this description.
We resolve a conjecture of Li and Ramos that relates the regularity of an FI-module to its local cohomology groups. This is an analogue of the familiar relationship between regularity and local cohomology in commutative algebra.
Over a field of characteristic p > 3, the first cohomology group of Lie superalgebra D(2,1;α) with coefficients in baby Verma modules is determined by calculating the outer superderivations of D(2,1;α).
In this paper, we show that the Dirac cohomology $H_{D}(L(λ))$ of a simple highest weight module $L(λ)$ in $\mathcal{O}^\mathfrak{p}$ can be parameterized by a specific set of weights: a subset $\mathcal{W}_I(λ)$ of the orbit of the Weyl group $W$ acting on $λ+ρ$. As an application, we show that any simple module in $\mathcal{O}^\mathfrak{p}$ is determined up to isomorphism by its Dirac cohomology. We describe four parameterizations of $H_D(L(λ))$ when $λ$ is regular. Two of these parameterizations are geometric in terms of a partial ordering on the dual of the Cartan subalgebra and a generali…
In this paper we define a new presentation for the Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra of the rational Cherednik algebra. This shows that the Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra is a Drinfeld algebra. We use this fact to define Dirac cohomology for the DO subalgebra. We also formalise generalised graded Hecke algebras and define a Langlands classification to generalised graded Hecke algebras.
Over a field of characteristic p>2, firstly, the structure of Kac modules of Lie superalgebra $\tilde{P}(2)$ and the weight space decompositions are given. Secondly, the weight-derivations of $\tilde{P}(2)$ to its Kac modules are computed. Finally, the first cohomology of $\tilde{P}(2)$ with coefficients in Kac modules is determined.
Cohomological induction gives an algebraic method for constructing representations of a real reductive Lie group $G$ from irreducible representations of reductive subgroups. Beilinson-Bernstein localization alternatively gives a geometric method for constructing Harish-Chandra modules for $G$ from certain representations of a Cartan subgroup. The duality theorem of Hecht, Mili\vcić, Schmid and Wolf establishes a relationship between modules cohomologically induced from minimal parabolics and the cohomology of the $\ms{D}$-modules on the complex flag variety for $G$ determined by the Beilinson-…
As a sequel to [Duan-Shu-Yao], we introduce here a category $\mathscr{LC}$ arising from the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ defined in [Duan-Shu-Yao] for Lie algebras of polynomial vector fields. The objects of $\mathscr{LC}$ are so-called Lie-Cartan modules which admit both Lie-module structure and compatible $R$-module structure ($R$ denotes the corresponding polynomial ring). This terminology is natural, coming from affine connections in differential geometry through which the structure sheaves in topology and the vector fields in geometry are integrated for differential manifolds. In this paper…
Using purely combinatorial methods we calculate the first degree cohomology of Specht modules indexed by two part partitions over fields of characteristic $p\ge 3$. These combinatorial methods also allow us to obtain an explicit description of all of the non-split extensions of the Specht module, $S^λ$, by the trivial module. Applying this work to partitions with more than two parts we are able to give an entirely combinatorial proof of the bound on the dimension of the first degree cohomology given by work of Donkin and Geranios. We also obtain as a corollary a result of Weber giving a far re…
We prove that Chow groups of certain non-commutative Hilbert schemes have a basis consisting of monomials in Chern classes of the universal bundle. Furthermore, we realize the cohomology of non-commutative Hilbert schemes as a module over the Cohomological Hall algebra.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, let $R$ be a commutative $k$-algebra, and let $M$ be a torsion free $R$-module of rank one with a connection $\nabla$. We consider the Lie-Rinehart cohomology with values in $End_{R}(M)$ with its induced connection, and give an interpretation of this cohomology in terms of the integrable connections on $M$. When $R$ is an isolated singularity of dimension $d\geq2$, we relate the Lie-Rinehart cohomology to the topological cohomology of the link of the singularity, and when $R$ is a quasi-homogenous hypersurface of dimension two, we g…
The cohomology annihilator of a noetherian ring that is finitely generated as a module over its center is introduced. Results are established linking the existence of non-trivial cohomology annihilators and the existence of strong generators for the category of finitely generated modules. Exploiting this link, results of Popescu and Roczen, and Wang concerning cohomology annihilators of commutative rings, and also results of Aihara and Takahashi, Keller and Van den Bergh, and Rouquier on strong finite generation of the corresponding bounded derived category, are generalized to cover excellent …
