In this paper we study existence and uniqueness of renormalized solution to the following problem $λ(x,u) -div a(x,Du) +Φ(x,u)) =f$ with $f$ in $L^1$ and with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary condition. The main difficulty in this task is that in general the operator entering in the above equation is not coercive in a Sobolev space. Moreover, the possible degenerate character of $λ$ with respect to $u$ renders more complex the proof of uniqueness for integrable data $f$.
We show that the following generalized version of Korn's second inequality with nonconstant measurable matrix valued coefficients P ||DuP+(DuP)^T||_q+||u||_q >= c ||Du||_q for u in W_0^{1,q}(Ω;R^3), 1<q<{\infty} is in general false, even if P is in SO(3), while the Legendre-Hadamard condition and ellipticity on C^n for the quadratic form |Du P+(DuP)^T|^2 is satisfied. Thus Garding's inequality may be violated for formally positive quadratic forms.
We consider a (generally, non-coercive) mixed boundary value problem in a bounded domain $D$ of ${\mathbb R}^n$ for a second order parameter-dependent elliptic differential operator $A (x,\partial, λ)$ with complex-valued essentially bounded measured coefficients and complex parameter $λ$. The differential operator is assumed to be of divergent form in $D$, the boundary operator $B (x,\partial)$ is of Robin type with possible pseudo-differential components on $\partial D$. The boundary of $D$ is assumed to be a Lipschitz surface. Under these assumptions the pair $(A (x,\partial, λ),B)$ induces…
We consider the boundary value problem $-Δ_p u = λc(x) |u|^{p-2}u + μ(x) |\grad u|^p + h(x)$, $u \in W^{1,p}_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$, $N \geq 2$, is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We assume $c$, $h \in L^q(Ω)$ for some $q > \max\{N/p,1\}$ with $c \gneqq 0$ and $μ\in L^{\infty}(Ω)$. We prove existence and uniqueness results in the coercive case $ λ\leq 0$ and existence and multiplicity results in the non-coercive case $ λ>0$. Also, considering stronger assumptions on the coefficients, we clarify the structure of the set of solutions in the non-coercive cas…
It is known that an elliptic system $\{P_j(x,D)\}_1^N$ of order $l$ is weakly coercive in $\overset{\circ}{W}\rule{0pt}{2mm}^l_\infty(\mathbb R^n)$, that is, all differential monomials of order $\le l-1$ on $C_0^\infty(\mathbb R^n)$-functions are subordinated to this system in the $L^\infty$-norm. Conditions for the converse result are found and other properties of weakly coercive systems are investigated. An analogue of the de Leeuw-Mirkil theorem is obtained for operators with variable coefficients: it is shown that an operator $P(x,D)$ in $n\ge 3$ variables with constant principal part is w…
We study the solvability in the whole Euclidean space of coercive quasi-linear and fully nonlinear elliptic equations modeled on $Δu\pm g(|\nabla u|)= f(u)$, $u\ge0$, where $f$ and $g$ are increasing continuous functions. We give conditions on $f$ and $g$ which guarantee the availability or the absence of positive solutions of such equations in $\R^N$. Our results considerably improve the existing ones and are sharp or close to sharp in the model cases. In particular, we completely characterize the solvability of such equations when $f$ and $g$ have power growth at infinity. We also derive a s…
We study a Dirichlet problem for an elliptic equation defined by a degenerate coercive operator and a singular right-hand side. We will show that the right-hand side has some regularizing effects on the solutions, even if it is singular.
We consider the boundary value problem \begin{equation} - Δu = λc(x)u+ μ(x) |\nabla u|^2 + h(x), \qquad u \in H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω), \leqno{(P_λ)} \end{equation} where $Ω\subset \R^N, N \geq 3$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is assumed that $c\gneqq 0$, $c,h$ belong to $L^p(Ω)$ for some $p > N$. Also $μ\in L^{\infty}(Ω)$ and $μ\geq μ_1 >0$ for some $μ_1 \in \R$. It is known that when $λ\leq 0$, problem $(P_λ)$ has at most one solution. In this paper we study, under various assumptions, the structure of the set of solutions of $(P_λ)$ assuming that $λ>0$. Our study unveils t…
In this paper, we use the variational method to find the normalized solutions of the quadratic coupled three wave Schrodinger equation with asymmetric coercive potential. We prove the existence of solutions for the system with 2-norm constraints.
We study existence and Lorentz regularity of distributional solutions to elliptic equations with either a convection or a drift first order term. The presence of such a term makes the problem not coercive. The main tools are pointwise estimates of the rearrangements of both the solution and its gradient.
We consider a family of quasilinear second order elliptic differential operators which are not coercive and are defined by functions in Marcinkiewicz spaces. We prove the existence of a solution to the corresponding Dirichlet problem. The associated obstacle problem is also solved. Finally, we show higher integrability of a solution to the Dirichlet problem when the datum is more regular.
This paper treats parabolic final value problems generated by coercive Lax--Milgram operators, and well-posedness is proved for this large class. The result is obtained by means of an isomorphism between Hilbert spaces containing the data and solutions. Like for elliptic generators, the data space is the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator that maps final states to the corresponding initial states, and the resulting compatibility condition extends to the coercive context. Lax--Milgram operators in vector distribution spaces is the main framework, but the crucial tool that analytic sem…
We show that a class of divergence-form elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient and non-coercive zero order terms are solvable, under essentially optimal hypotheses on the coefficients in the equation. In addition, we prove that the solutions are in general not unique. The case where the zero order term has the opposite sign was already intensively studied and the uniqueness is the rule.
Boundary value problems for a class of quasilinear elliptic equations, with an Orlicz type growth and L^1 right-hand side are considered. Both Dirichlet and Neumann problems are contemplated. Existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions, as well as their regularity, are established. The case of measure right-hand sides is also analyzed.
We show the existence of a weak solution of a semilinear elliptic Dirichlet problem on an arbitrary open set. We make no assumptions about the open set, very mild regularity assumptions on the semilinearity, plus a coerciveness assumption which depends on the optimal Poincare-Steklov constant. The proof is based on Schaefer's fixed point theorem applied to a sequence of truncated problems. We state a simple uniqueness result. We also generalize the results to Robin boundary conditions.
In this paper, we provide suitable adaptations of the "weak version of Bernstein method" introduced by the first author in 1991, in order to obtain Lipschitz regularity results and Lipschitz estimates for nonlinear integro-differential elliptic and parabolic equations set in the whole space. Our interest is to obtain such Lipschitz results to possibly degenerate equations, or to equations which are indeed "uniformly el-liptic" (maybe in the nonlocal sense) but which do not satisfy the usual "growth condition" on the gradient term allowing to use (for example) the Ishii-Lions' method. We treat …
We study the uniqueness problem of $σ$-regular solution of the equation, $$-Δ_p u+ \abs u^{q-1}u =h \quad on\quad \RN, $$ where $q>p-1>0.$ and $N> p.$ Other coercive type equations associated to more general differential operators are also investigated. Our uniqueness results hold for equations associated to the mean curvature type operators as well as for more general quasilinear subelliptic operators.
In this paper, we prove existence and regularity results for solutions of some nonlinear Dirichlet problems for an elliptic equation defined by a degenerate coercive operator and a singular right hand side. \begin{equation}\label{01} \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -\displaystyle\mbox{div}( a(x,u,\nabla u))&=\displaystyle\frac{f}{u^γ} & \mbox{ in } Ω\\ u&>0 &\mbox{ in }Ω\\ u&=0 &\mbox{ on } δΩ\end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $Ω$ is bounded open subset of $I\!\!R^{N}(N\geq2),$ $γ>0$ and $ f$ is a nonnegative function that belongs to some Lebesgue space.
We investigate nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet problems whose growth is driven by a general anisotropic $N$-function, which is not necessarily of power type and need not satisfy the $Δ_2$ nor the $\nabla _2$-condition. Fully anisotropic, non-reflexive Orlicz-Sobolev spaces provide a natural functional framework associated with these problems. Minimal integrability assumptions are detected on the datum on the right-hand side of the equation ensuring existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. When merely integrable, or even measure, data are allowed, existence of suitably further generalized solut…
We study the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions in the whole Euclidean space of coercive quasi-linear elliptic equations such as \[ Δ_p u = f(u)\pm g(\left|\nabla u\right|) \] where $f\in C([0,\infty))$ and $g\in C^{0,1}([0,\infty)) $ are strictly increasing with $ f(0)=g(0)=0$. Among other things we obtain generalized integral conditions of Keller-Osserman type. In the particular case of plus sign on the right-hand side we obtain that different conditions are needed when $p\geq 2$ or $p\leq 2$, due to the degeneracy of the operator.
We investigate the properties of certain elliptic systems leading, a~priori, to solutions that belong to the space of Radon measures. We show that if the problem is equipped with a so-called asymptotic Uhlenbeck structure, then the solution can in fact be understood as a standard weak solution, with one proviso: analogously as in the case of minimal surface equations, the attainment of the boundary value is penalized by a measure supported on (a subset of) the boundary, which, for the class of problems under consideration here, is the part of the boundary where a Neumann boundary condition is …
We consider second order elliptic divergence form systems with complex measurable coefficients $A$ that are independent of the transversal coordinate, and prove that the set of $A$ for which the boundary value problem with $L_2$ Dirichlet or Neumann data is well posed, is an open set. Furthermore we prove that these boundary value problems are well posed when $A$ is either Hermitean, block or constant. Our methods apply to more general systems of PDEs and as an example we prove perturbation results for boundary value problems for differential forms.
Time-periodic solutions to partial differential equations of parabolic type corresponding to an operator that is elliptic in the sense of Agmon-Douglis-Nirenberg are investigated. In the whole- and half-space case we construct an explicit formula for the solution and establish coercive Lp estimates. The estimates generalize a famous result of Agmon, Douglis and Nirenberg for elliptic problems to the time-periodic case.
We study the existence of a maximal solution of $-\Gd u+g(u)=f(x)$ in a domain $\Gw\subset \BBR^N$ with compact boundary, assuming that $f\in (L^1_{loc}(\Gw))_+$ and that $g$ is nondecreasing, $g(0)\geq 0$ and $g$ satisfies the Keller-Osserman condition. We show that if the boundary satisfies the classical $C_{1,2}$ Wiener criterion then the maximal solution is a large solution, i.e., it blows up everywhere on the boundary. In addition we discuss the question of uniqueness of large solutions.
We study the existence of the Green function for an elliptic system in divergence form $-\nabla\cdot a\nabla$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, with $d>2$. The tensor field $a=a(x)$ is only assumed to be bounded and $λ$-coercive. For almost every point $y \in \mathbb{R}^d$, the existence of a Green's function $G(a; \cdot, y)$ centered in $y$ has been proven in [J. Conlon, A. Giunti and F.Otto, "Green's function for elliptic systems: Delmotte-Deuschel bounds", 2017]. In this paper, we show that the set of points $y \in \mathbb{R}^d$ for which $G(a; \cdot, y)$ does not exist has zero $p$-capacity, for an expon…
A short account of recent existence and multiplicity theorems on the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic equation with $(p,q)$-Laplacian in a bounded domain is performed. Both eigenvalue problems and different types of perturbation terms are briefly discussed. Special attention is paid to possibly coercive, resonant, subcritical, critical, or asymmetric right-hand sides.
We construct integrable pseudopotentials with an arbitrary number of fields in terms of elliptic generalization of hypergeometric functions in several variables. These pseudopotentials yield some integrable (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic type systems. An interesting class of integrable (1+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic type systems is also generated by our pseudopotentials.
In this paper we study the convergence of a finite volume approximation of a convective diffusive elliptic problem with Neumann boundary conditions and L 1 data. To deal with the non-coercive character of the equation and the low regularity of the right hand-side we mix the finite volume tools and the renormalized techniques. To handle the Neumann boundary conditions we choose solutions having a null median and we prove a convergence result.
We prove the existence of a weak solution for a general class of Dirichlet anisotropic elliptic problems such as $\mathcal Au+Φ(x,u,\nabla u)=\mathfrak{B}u+f$ in $Ω$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb R^N$ and $f\in L^1(Ω)$ is arbitrary. The principal part is a divergence-form nonlinear anisotropic operator $\mathcal A$, the prototype of which is $\mathcal A u=-\sum_{j=1}^N \partial_j(|\partial_j u|^{p_j-2}\partial_j u)$ with $p_j>1$ for all $1\leq j\leq N$ and $\sum_{j=1}^N (1/p_j)>1$. As a novelty in this paper, our lower order terms involve a new class of operators $\mathfrak B…
We use novel integral representations developed by the second author to prove certain rigorous results concerning elliptic boundary value problems in convex polygons. Central to this approach is the so-called global relation, which is a non-local equation in the Fourier space that relates the known boundary data to the unknown boundary values. Assuming that the global relation is satisfied in the weakest possible sense, i.e. in a distributional sense, we prove there exist solutions to Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary value problems with distributional boundary data. We also show that the …
We give a geometric interpretation of all the $m$-th elliptic integrable systems associated to a $k'$-symmetric space $N=G/G_0$ (in the sense of C.L. Terng). It turns out that we have to introduce the integer $m_{k'}$ defined by m_{1}=0 and m_{k'}= [(k'+1)/2]. Then the general problem splits into three cases : the primitive case ($m < m_{k'}$), the determined case ($m_{k'}\leq m \leq k'-1$) and the underdetermined case ($m \geq k'$). We prove that we have an interpretation in terms of a sigma model with a Wess-Zumino term. Moreover we prove that we have a geometric interpretation in terms of t…
In this article we study ergodic problems in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ for weakly coupled systems of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with coercive right-hand sides. The Hamiltonians are assumed to have a fairly general structure and the switching rates need not be constant. We prove the existence of a critical value $λ^*$ such that the ergodic eigenvalue problem has a solution for every $λ\leqλ^*$ and no solution for $λ>λ^*$. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of non-negative solutions corresponding to the value $λ^*$ are also established. We also exhibit the implication of these re…
The $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann problem is the fundamental boundary value problem in several complex variables. It features an elliptic operator coupled with non-coercive boundary conditions. The problem is globally regular on many, but not all, pseudoconvex domains. We discuss several recent developments in the $L^{2}$-Sobolev theory of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann problem that concern compactness and global regularity.
We show that the only locally integrable stationary solutions to the integrated Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in $R$ and $R^2$ are the trivial constant solutions. We extend our technique and prove similar results to other nonlinear elliptic problems in $\R^N$.
