We bring together those systems of hydrodynamical type that can be written as geodesic equations on diffeomorphism groups or on extensions of diffeomorphism groups with right invariant $L^2$ or $H^1$ metrics. We present their formal derivation starting from Euler's equation, the first order equation satisfied by the right logarithmic derivative of a geodesic in Lie groups with right invariant metrics.
We determine the Riemannian manifolds for which the group of exact volume preserving diffeomorphisms is a totally geodesic subgroup of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, considering right invariant $L^2$-metrics. The same is done for the subgroup of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms as a subgroup of the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms in the Kähler case. These are special cases of totally geodesic subgroups of diffeomorphisms with Lie algebras big enough to detect the vanishing of a symmetric 2-tensor field.
We study the geodesic distance induced by right-invariant metrics on the group $\operatorname{Diff}_\text{c}(M)$ of compactly supported diffeomorphisms, for various Sobolev norms $W^{s,p}$. Our main result is that the geodesic distance vanishes identically on every connected component whenever $s<\min\{n/p,1\}$, where $n$ is the dimension of $M$. We also show that previous results imply that whenever $s > n/p$ or $s \ge 1$, the geodesic distance is always positive. In particular, when $n\ge 2$, the geodesic distance vanishes if and only if $s<1$ in the Riemannian case $p=2$, contrary to a conj…
We study the geodesic distance induced by right-invariant metrics on the group $\operatorname{Diff}_c(M)$ of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a manifold $M$, and show that it vanishes for the critical Sobolev norms $W^{s,n/s}$, where $n$ is the dimension of $M$ and $s\in(0,1)$. This completes the proof that the geodesic distance induced by $W^{s,p}$ vanishes if $sp\le n$ and $s<1$, and is positive otherwise. The proof is achieved by combining the techniques of two recent papers --- [JM19] by the authors, which treated the sub-critical case, and [BHP18] of Bauer, Harms and Preston, which …
We study the family of $α$-connections of Amari-Chentsov on the homogeneous space $\mathcal{D}(M)/\mathcal{D}_μ(M)$ of diffeomorphisms modulo volume-preserving diffeomorphims of a compact manifold $M$. We show that in some cases their geodesic equations yield completely integrable Hamiltonian systems.
The $L^2$-metric or Fubini-Study metric on the non-linear Grassmannian of all submanifolds of type $M$ in a Riemannian manifold $(N,g)$ induces geodesic distance 0. We discuss another metric which involves the mean curvature and shows that its geodesic distance is a good topological metric. The vanishing phenomenon for the geodesic distance holds also for all diffeomorphism groups for the $L^2$-metric.
The geodesic distance vanishes on the group of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a Riemannian manifold $M$ of bounded geometry, for the right invariant weak Riemannian metric which is induced by the Sobolev metric $H^s$ of order $0\le s<\tfrac12$ on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak X_c(M)$ of vector fields with compact support.
In this article we introduce a diffeomorphism-invariant Riemannian metric on the space of vector valued one-forms. The particular choice of metric is motivated by potential future applications in the field of functional data and shape analysis and by connections to the Ebin metric on the space of all Riemannian metrics. In the present work we calculate the geodesic equations and obtain an explicit formula for the solutions to the corresponding initial value problem. Using this we show that it is a geodesically and metrically incomplete space and study the existence of totally geodesic subspace…
We study Sobolev-type metrics of fractional order $s\geq0$ on the group $\Diff_c(M)$ of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a manifold $M$. We show that for the important special case $M=S^1$ the geodesic distance on $\Diff_c(S^1)$ vanishes if and only if $s\leq\frac12$. For other manifolds we obtain a partial characterization: the geodesic distance on $\Diff_c(M)$ vanishes for $M=\R\times N, s<\frac12$ and for $M=S^1\times N, s\leq\frac12$, with $N$ being a compact Riemannian manifold. On the other hand the geodesic distance on $\Diff_c(M)$ is positive for $\dim(M)=1, s>\frac12$ and $\dim(…
This article provides an overview of various notions of shape spaces, including the space of parametrized and unparametrized curves, the space of immersions, the diffeomorphism group and the space of Riemannian metrics. We discuss the Riemannian metrics that can be defined thereon, and what is known about the properties of these metrics. We put particular emphasis on the induced geodesic distance, the geodesic equation and its well-posedness, geodesic and metric completeness and properties of the curvature.
We demonstrate that the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation given by $$θ_t + \left<u, \nabla θ\right>= 0,\;\;\; θ= \nabla \times (-Δ)^{-1/2} u,$$ is the geodesic equation on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a Riemannian manifold $M$ in the right-invariant $\dot{H}^{-1/2}$ metric. We show by example, that the Riemannian exponential map is smooth and non-Fredholm, and that the sectional curvature at the identity is unbounded of both signs.
We show that finite parallel transports of vectors in Riemannian spaces, determined by the multiplication law in the deformed groups of diffeomorphisms, and sequences of infinitesimal parallel transports of vectors along geodesics are equivalent.
We study geodesic equations for a family of right-invariant Riemannian metrics on the group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold. The metrics descend to Fisher's information metric on the space of smooth probability densities. The right reduced geodesic equations are higher-dimensional generalisations of the $μ$--Hunter--Saxton equation, used to model liquid crystals under influence of magnetic fields. Local existence and uniqueness results are established by proving smoothness of the geodesic spray. The descending property of the metrics is used to obtain a novel factorisation of diffeomo…
We consider a variety of geodesic equations on Sobolev diffeomorphism groups, including the equations of ideal hydrodynamics. We prove that solutions of the corresponding two-point boundary value problems are precisely as smooth as their boundary conditions. We further utilise this regularity property to construct continuously differentiable exponential maps in the Frechét setting.
The space of embedded submanifolds plays an important role in applications such as computational anatomy and shape analysis. We can define two different classes on Riemannian metrics on this space: so-called outer metrics are metrics that measure shape changes using deformations of the ambient space and they find applications mostly in computational anatomy; the second class that are defined directly on the space of embeddings using intrinsic differential operations and they are used in shape analysis. In this paper we compare for the first time the topologies and the geodesic distance functio…
Let $E$ be a finite-dimensional real vector space and $M\subseteq E$ be a convex polytope with non-empty interior. We turn the group of all $C^\infty$-diffeomorphisms of $M$ into a regular Lie group.
It is proven that the identity component of the group preserving the leaves of a generalized foliation is perfect. This shows that a well-known simplicity theorem on the diffeomorphism group extends to the nontransitive case.
It is well-known that any isotopically connected diffeomorphism group $G$ of a manifold determines uniquely a singular foliation $\F_G$. A one-to-one correspondence between the class of singular foliations and a subclass of diffeomorphism groups is established. As an illustration of this correspondence it is shown that the commutator subgroup $[G,G]$ of an isotopically connected, factorizable and non-fixing $C^r$-diffeomorphism group $G$ is simple iff the foliation $\F_{[G,G]}$ defined by $[G,G]$ admits no proper minimal sets. In particular, the compactly supported $e$-component of the leaf pr…
It is shown that the compactly supported identity component of the diffeomorphism group of the 2-dimensional punctured torus $\mathbb T^2_p$ is an unbounded group. It follows that the fragmentation norm of $\mathbb T^2_p$ is unbounded.
We prove that the Riemannian exponential map of the right-invariant $L^2$ metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a two-dimensional manifold with a nonempty boundary is a nonlinear Fredholm map of index zero.
We show that a group of diffeomorphisms $\D$ on the open unit interval $I,$ equipped with the topology of uniform convergence on any compact set of the derivatives at any order, is non regular: the exponential map is not defined for some path of the Lie algebra. this result extends to the group of diffeomorphisms of finite dimensional, non compact manifold $M.$
By studying the Higgs bundle equations with the gauge group replaced by the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere we encounter the notion of a folded hyperkaehler 4-manifold and conjecture the existence of a family of such metrics parametrised by an infinite-dimensional analogue of Teichmueller space.
For a compact contact manifold it is shown that the anisotropic Folland-Stein function spaces form an algebra. The notion of anisotropic regularity is extended to define the space of Folland-Stein contact diffeomorphisms, which is shown to be a topological group under composition and a smooth Hilbert manifold. These results are used in a subsequent paper to analyze the action of the group of contact diffeomorphisms on the space of CR structures on a compact, three dimensional manifold.
We show the existence of a weak bi-invariant symmetric nondegenerate 2-form on the contact diffeomorphisms group $\mathcal{D}_θ$ of a contact Riemannian manifold $(M,g,θ)$ and study its properties. We describe the Euler's equation on a Lie algebra of group $\mathcal{D}_θ$ and calculate the sectional curvature of $\mathcal{D}_θ$. In a case $\dim M =3$ connection between the bi-invariant metric on $\mathcal{D}_θ$ and the bi-invariant metric on volume-preserving diffeomorphisms group $\mathcal{D}_μ$ of $M^3$ is discover.
In this paper we show that the topological closure of the holonomy group of a certain class of projectively flat Finsler 2-manifolds of constant curvature is maximal, that is isomorphic to the connected component of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. This class of 2-manifolds contains the standard Funk plane of constant negative curvature and the Bryant-Shen-spheres of constant positive curvature. The result provides the first examples describing completely infinite dimensional Finslerian holonomy structures.
We show the existence of a weak bi-invariant symmetric nondegenerate 2-form on the symplectic diffeomorphisms group $\mathcal{D}_ω$ of a symplectic Riemannian manifold $(M,g,ω)$ and study its properties. We describe the Euler's equation on a Lie algebra of group $\mathcal{D}_ω$ and calculate the sectional curvature of $\mathcal{D}_ω(T^n)$.
We study the action of the diffeomorphism group $\Diff(M)$ on the space of proper immersions $\Imm_{\text{prop}}(M,N)$ by composition from the right. We show that smooth transversal slices exist through each orbit, that the quotient space is Hausdorff and is stratified into smooth manifolds, one for each conjugacy class of isotropy groups.
Let (M,J) be an almost complex manifold. We show that the infinite-dimensional space Tau of totally real submanifolds in M carries a natural connection. This induces a canonical notion of geodesics in Tau and a corresponding definition of when a functional, defined on Tau, is convex. Geodesics in Tau can be expressed in terms of families of J-holomorphic curves in M; we prove a uniqueness result and study their existence. When M is Kähler we define a canonical functional on Tau; it is convex if M has non-positive Ricci curvature. Our construction is formally analogous to the notion of geodesic…
Given a finite dimensional manifold $N$, the group $\operatorname{Diff}_{\mathcal S}(N)$ of diffeomorphism of $N$ which fall suitably rapidly to the identity, acts on the manifold $B(M,N)$ of submanifolds on $N$ of diffeomorphism type $M$ where $M$ is a compact manifold with $\dim M<\dim N$. For a right invariant weak Riemannian metric on $\operatorname{Diff}_{\mathcal S}(N)$ induced by a quite general operator $L:\frak X_{\mathcal S}(N)\to Γ(T^*N\otimes\operatorname{vol}(N))$, we consider the induced weak Riemannian metric on $B(M,N)$ and we compute its geodesics and sectional curvature. For …
We study completeness properties of the Sobolev diffeomorphism groups $\mathcal D^s(M)$ endowed with strong right-invariant Riemannian metrics when the underlying manifold $M$ is $\mathbb R^d$ or compact without boundary. The main result is that for $s > \dim M/2 + 1$, the group $\mathcal D^s(M)$ is geodesically and metrically complete with a surjective exponential map. We then present the connection between the Sobolev diffeomorphism group and the large deformation matching framework in order to apply our results to diffeomorphic image matching.
These lecture notes explain the geometry and discuss some of the analytical questions underlying image registration within the framework of large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping (LDDMM) used in computational anatomy.
For a compact, smooth C^r orbifold (without boundary), we show that the topological structure of the orbifold diffeomorphism group is a Banach manifold for finite r \ge 1 and a Frechet manifold if r=infty. In each case, the local model is the separable Banach (Frechet) space of C^r (C^infty, resp.) orbisections of the tangent orbibundle.
Of concern is the study of the long-time existence of solutions to the Euler--Arnold equation of the right-invariant $H^{3/2}$-metric on the diffeomorphism group of the circle. In previous work by Escher and Kolev it has been shown that this equation admits long-time solutions if the order $s$ of the metric is greater than $3/2$, the behaviour for the critical Sobolev index $s=3/2$ has been left open. In this article we fill this gap by proving the analogous result also for the boundary case. The behaviour of the $H^{3/2}$-metric is, however, still different from its higher order counter parts…
The equations of motion of a charged ideal fluid, respectively the superconductivity equation (both in a given magnetic field) are showed to be geodesic equations on a general, respectively central extension of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms with right invariant metric. For this, quantization of the magnetic flux is required. We do curvature computations in both cases in order to get some informations about the stability.
We suggest a construction that, given a trajectorial diffeomorphism between two Hamiltonian systems, produces integrals of them. As the main example we treat geodesic equivalence of metrics. We show that the existence of a non-trivially geodesically equivalent metric leads to Liouville integrability, and present explicit formulae for integrals.
Recently, Holm, Marsden, and Ratiu [1998] have derived a new model for the mean motion of an ideal fluid in Euclidean space given by the equation $\dot{V}(t) + \nabla_{U(t)} V(t) - α^2 [\nabla U(t)]^t \cdot \triangle U(t) = -\text{grad} p(t)$ where $\text{div} U=0$, and $V = (1- α^2 \triangle)U$. In this model, the momentum $V$ is transported by the velocity $U$, with the effect that nonlinear interaction between modes corresponding to length scales smaller than $α$ is negligible. We generalize this equation to the setting of an $n$ dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. The resulting equati…
We establish a simple relation between curvatures of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the lifespan of potential solutions to the inviscid Burgers equation before the appearance of shocks. We show that shock formation corresponds to a focal point of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms regarded as a submanifold of the full diffeomorphism group and, consequently, to a conjugate point along a geodesic in the Wasserstein space of densities. This establishes an intrinsic connection between ideal Euler hydrodynamics (via Arnold's approach), shock formation in the multidim…
By considering suitable Poisson groupoids, we develop an approach to obtain Lie group structures on (subgroups of) the Poisson diffeomorphism groups of various classes of Poisson manifolds. As applications, we show that the Poisson diffeomorphism groups of (normal-crossing) log-symplectic, elliptic symplectic, scattering-symplectic and cosymplectic manifolds are regular infinite-dimensional Lie groups.
We exhibit many examples of closed complex surfaces whose diffeomorphism groups are not simply-connected and contain loops that are not homotopic to loops of symplectomorphisms.
We construct a smooth Lie group structure on the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms of a compact analytic manifold with corners. This generalises the known analogous results in the situation where the real analytic manifold has no corners. Additionally our approach uses a different construction.
In this paper, we define locally convex vector spaces of weighted vector fields and use them as model spaces for Lie groups of weighted diffeomorphisms on Riemannian manifolds. We prove an easy condition on the weights that ensures that these groups contain the compactly supported diffeomorphisms. We finally show that for the special case where the manifold is the euclidean space, these Lie groups coincide with the ones constructed in the author's earlier work ["Weighted diffeomorphism groups of Banach spaces and weighted mapping groups". In: Dissertationes Math. 484 (2012), p. 128. DOI: 10.40…
Many conservative partial differential equations correspond to geodesic equations on groups of diffeomorphisms. Stability of their solutions can be studied by examining sectional curvature of these groups: negative curvature in all sections implies exponential growth of perturbations and hence suggests instability, while positive curvature suggests stability. In the first part of the paper we survey what we currently know about the curvature-stability relation in this context and provide detailed calculations for several equations of continuum mechanics associated to Sobolev $H^0$ and $H^1$ en…
We present a geometric analysis of the incompressible averaged Euler equations for an ideal inviscid fluid. We show that solutions of these equations are geodesics on the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group of a new weak right invariant pseudo metric. We prove that for precompact open subsets of ${\mathbb R}^n$, this system of PDEs with Dirichlet boundary conditions are well-posed for initial data in the Hilbert space $H^s$, $s>n/2+1$. We then use a nonlinear Trotter product formula to prove that solutions of the averaged Euler equations are a regular limit of solutions to the averaged Navi…
Consider a connected manifold of dimension at least two and the group of compactly supported diffeomorphisms that are compactly supported isotopic to the identity. This group acts $n$-transitive: Any tuple of $n$ points can be moved to any other tuple of $n$ points by a compactly supported diffeomorphism that is compactly supported isotopic to the identity. An orbifold diffeomorphism group is typically not $n$-transitive: simple obstructions are given by isomorphism classes of isotropy groups of points. In this paper we investigate the transitivity properties of the group of compactly supporte…
We prove that the group D^r(R) of C^r diffeomorphisms of the real line, endowed with the compact-open and Whitney C^r topologies, is bihomeomorphic to the group H(R) of homeomorphisms of the real line endowed with the compact-open and Whitney topologies. This implies that the diffeomorphism group D^r(R) endowed with the Whitney C^r topology is homeomorphic to the countable box-power of the separable Hilbert space.
Smale proved that the orientation-preserving diffeomorphism group of S^2 has a continuous strong deformation retraction to SO(3). In this paper, we construct such a strong deformation retraction which is diffeologically smooth.
We construct an infinite dimensional real analytic manifold structure for the space of real analytic mappings from a compact manifold to a locally convex manifold. Here a map is real analytic if it extends to a holomorphic map on some neighbourhood of the complexification of its domain. As is well known the construction turns the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms into a smooth locally convex Lie group. We prove then that the diffeomorphism group is regular in the sense of Milnor. In the inequivalent "convenient setting of calculus" the real analytic diffeomorphisms even form a real analyt…
A recent preprint of Csikós, Pyber and Szabó (arXiv:1411.7524) proves that the diffeomorphism group of $T^2\times S^2$ is not Jordan. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the arguments of Csikós, Pyber and Szabó in order to obtain many other examples of compact manifolds whose diffeomorphism group fails to be Jordan. In particular we prove that for any $ε>0$ there exist manifolds admitting effective actions of arbitrarily large $p$-groups $Γ$ all of whose abelian subgroups have at most $|Γ|^ε$ elements. Finally, we also recover some results on nonexistence of effective actions of compact…
Given a compact manifold M, we prove that any bracket generating and invariant under multiplication on smooth functions family of vector fields on M generates the connected component of unit of the group Diff(M).
In this paper we prove that all initially-smooth solutions of the Euler-Weil-Petersson equation, which describes geodesics on the universal Teichmüller space under the Weil-Petersson metric, will remain smooth for all time. This extends the work of Escher-Kolev for strong Riemannian metrics to the borderline case of $H^{3/2}$ metrics. In addition we show that all initially-smooth solutions of the Wunsch equation, which describes geodesics on the universal Teichmüller curve under the Velling-Kirillov metric, must blow up in finite time due to wave breaking, extending work of Castro-Córdoba and …
In a previous work it is shown that every finite group $G$ of diffeomorphisms of a connected smooth manifold $M$ of dimension $\geq 2$ equals, up to quotient by the flow, the centralizer of the group of smooth automorphisms of a $G$-invariant complete vector field $X$ (shortly $X$ describes $G$). Here the foregoing result is extended to show that every finite group of diffeomorphisms of $M$ is described, within the group of all homeomorphisms of $M$, by a vector field. As a consequence, it is proved that a finite group of homeomorphisms of a compact connected topological $4$-manifold, whose ac…
In this article we study the Hofer geometry of a compact Lie group $K$ which acts by Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on a symplectic manifold $M$. Generalized Hofer norms on the Lie algebra of $K$ are introduced and analyzed with tools from group invariant convex geometry, functional and matrix analysis. Several global results on the existence of geodesics and their characterization in finite dimensional Lie groups $K$ endowed with bi-invariant Finsler metrics are proved. We relate the conditions for being a geodesic in the group $K$ and in the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. These results a…
We present a way of constructing and deforming diffeomorphisms of manifolds endowed with a Lie group action. This is applied to the study of exotic diffeomorphisms and involutions of spheres and to the equivariant homotopy of Lie groups.
We study groups of circle diffeomorphisms whose action on the cylinder $\mathcal C=\mathbb S^1\times \mathbb S^1\setminus Δ$ preserves a volume form. We first show that such a group is topologically conjugate to a subgroup of $\rm{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, then discuss the existence of a differentiable conjugacy.
In this note we obtain the characterization for asymptotic directions on various subgroups of the diffeomorphism group. We give a simple proof of non-existence of such directions for area-preserving diffeomorphisms of closed surfaces of non-zero curvature. Finally, we exhibit the common origin of the Monge-Ampere equations in 2D fluid dynamics and mass transport.
