We show the existence of a weak bi-invariant symmetric nondegenerate 2-form on the contact diffeomorphisms group $\mathcal{D}_θ$ of a contact Riemannian manifold $(M,g,θ)$ and study its properties. We describe the Euler's equation on a Lie algebra of group $\mathcal{D}_θ$ and calculate the sectional curvature of $\mathcal{D}_θ$. In a case $\dim M =3$ connection between the bi-invariant metric on $\mathcal{D}_θ$ and the bi-invariant metric on volume-preserving diffeomorphisms group $\mathcal{D}_μ$ of $M^3$ is discover.
For a compact contact manifold it is shown that the anisotropic Folland-Stein function spaces form an algebra. The notion of anisotropic regularity is extended to define the space of Folland-Stein contact diffeomorphisms, which is shown to be a topological group under composition and a smooth Hilbert manifold. These results are used in a subsequent paper to analyze the action of the group of contact diffeomorphisms on the space of CR structures on a compact, three dimensional manifold.
We study the action of the group of contact diffeomorphisms on CR deformations of compact three-dimensional CR manifolds. Using anisotropic function spaces and an anisotropic structure on the space of contact diffeomorphisms, we establish the existence of local transverse slices to the action of the contact diffeomorphism group in the neighbourhood of a fixed embeddable strongly pseudoconvex CR structure.
The group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, the group of symplectomorphisms and the group of contactomorphisms constitute the classical groups of diffeomorphisms. The first homology groups of the compactly supported identity components of the first two groups have been computed by Thurston and Banyaga, respectively. In this paper we solve the long standing problem on the algebraic structure of the third classical diffeomorphism group, i.e. the contactomorphism group. Namely we show that the compactly supported identity component of the group of contactomorphisms is perfect and simple (if t…
In this paper, we classify the three-dimensional contact partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose stable, unstable and central distributions are smooth, and whose non-wandering set equals the whole manifold. We prove that up to a finite quotient or a finite power, they are smoothly conjugated either to the time-one map of an algebraic contact-Anosov flow, or to an affine partially hyperbolic automorphism of a nil-manifold. The rigid geometric structure induced by the three invariant distributions plays a fundamental role in the proof.
We show the existence of a weak bi-invariant symmetric nondegenerate 2-form on the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group of a three-dimensional manifold and study its properties. Despite the fact that the space $\mathcal{D}_μ(M^3)$ is infinite-dimensional, we succeed in defining the signature of the bi-invariant quadric form. It is equal to the $η$-invariant of the manifold $M^3$.
We show the existence of a weak bi-invariant symmetric nondegenerate 2-form on the symplectic diffeomorphisms group $\mathcal{D}_ω$ of a symplectic Riemannian manifold $(M,g,ω)$ and study its properties. We describe the Euler's equation on a Lie algebra of group $\mathcal{D}_ω$ and calculate the sectional curvature of $\mathcal{D}_ω(T^n)$.
R-circles in general three dimensional CR manifolds (of contact type) are the analogues to traces of Lagrangian totally geodesic planes on the sphere viewed as the boundary of two dimensional complex hyperbolic space. They form a family of certain legendrian curves on the manifold. We prove that a diffeomorphism between three dimensional CR manifolds which preserve circles is either a CR diffeomorphism or conjugate CR diffeomorphism.
By a theorem of Banyaga the group of diffeomorphisms of a manifold $P$ preserving a regular contact form $α$ is a central $S^1$ extension of the commutator of the group of symplectomorphisms of the base $B = P/S^1$. We show that if $T$ is a Hamiltonian maximal torus in the group of symplectomorphism of $B$, then its preimage under the extension map is a maximal torus not only in the group $\Diff(P, α)$ of diffeomorphisms of $P$ preserving $α$ but also in the much bigger group of contactomorphisms $\Diff (P, ξ)$, the group of diffeomorphism of $P$ preserving the contact distribution $ξ= \ker α$…
We study the geodesic distance induced by right-invariant metrics on the group $\operatorname{Diff}_c(M)$ of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a manifold $M$, and show that it vanishes for the critical Sobolev norms $W^{s,n/s}$, where $n$ is the dimension of $M$ and $s\in(0,1)$. This completes the proof that the geodesic distance induced by $W^{s,p}$ vanishes if $sp\le n$ and $s<1$, and is positive otherwise. The proof is achieved by combining the techniques of two recent papers --- [JM19] by the authors, which treated the sub-critical case, and [BHP18] of Bauer, Harms and Preston, which …
We consider general Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms on a closed orientable two-dimentional surface. In this paper it is proved that the complete topological invariant of Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms is finite, the algorithm of the construction of the complete topological invariant in explicit form is given and necessary and sufficient conditions of topological conjugacy of Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms is obtained.
In this article we introduce a diffeomorphism-invariant Riemannian metric on the space of vector valued one-forms. The particular choice of metric is motivated by potential future applications in the field of functional data and shape analysis and by connections to the Ebin metric on the space of all Riemannian metrics. In the present work we calculate the geodesic equations and obtain an explicit formula for the solutions to the corresponding initial value problem. Using this we show that it is a geodesically and metrically incomplete space and study the existence of totally geodesic subspace…
We compute the Hilbert polynomial and the Poincare function counting the number of fixed jet-order differential invariants of conformal metric structures modulo local diffeomorphisms, and we describe the field of rational differential invariants separating generic orbits of the diffeomorphism pseudogroup action. This resolves the local recognition problem for conformal structures.
We study the geodesic distance induced by right-invariant metrics on the group $\operatorname{Diff}_\text{c}(M)$ of compactly supported diffeomorphisms, for various Sobolev norms $W^{s,p}$. Our main result is that the geodesic distance vanishes identically on every connected component whenever $s<\min\{n/p,1\}$, where $n$ is the dimension of $M$. We also show that previous results imply that whenever $s > n/p$ or $s \ge 1$, the geodesic distance is always positive. In particular, when $n\ge 2$, the geodesic distance vanishes if and only if $s<1$ in the Riemannian case $p=2$, contrary to a conj…
We bring together those systems of hydrodynamical type that can be written as geodesic equations on diffeomorphism groups or on extensions of diffeomorphism groups with right invariant $L^2$ or $H^1$ metrics. We present their formal derivation starting from Euler's equation, the first order equation satisfied by the right logarithmic derivative of a geodesic in Lie groups with right invariant metrics.
We use a 1-parameter version of gauge theory to investigate the topology of the diffeomorphism group of 4-manifolds. A polynomial invariant, analogous to the Donaldson polynomial, is defined, and is used to show that the diffeomorphism group of certain simply-connected 4-manifolds has infinitely generated π_0.
We exploit the Cartan-Kähler theory to prove the local existence of real analytic quaternionic contact structures for any prescribed values of the respective curvature functions and their covariant derivatives at a given point on a manifold. We show that, in a certain sense, the different real analytic quaternionic contact geometries in $4n+3$ dimensions depend, modulo diffeomorphisms, on $2n+2$ real analytic functions of $2n+3$ variables.
The group $\text{Diff}(\mathcal{M})$ of diffeomorphisms of a closed manifold $\mathcal{M}$ is naturally equipped with various right-invariant Sobolev norms $W^{s,p}$. Recent work showed that for sufficiently weak norms, the geodesic distance collapses completely (namely, when $sp\le \text{dim}\mathcal{M}$ and $s<1$). But when there is no collapse, what kind of metric space is obtained? In particular, does it have a finite or infinite diameter? This is the question we study in this paper. We show that the diameter is infinite for strong enough norms, when $(s-1)p\ge \text{dim}\mathcal{M}$, and …
The geodesic distance vanishes on the group of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a Riemannian manifold $M$ of bounded geometry, for the right invariant weak Riemannian metric which is induced by the Sobolev metric $H^s$ of order $0\le s<\tfrac12$ on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak X_c(M)$ of vector fields with compact support.
We study the space of positive scalar curvature (psc) metrics on a 4-manifold, and give examples of simply connected manifolds for which it is disconnected. These examples imply that concordance of psc metrics does not imply isotopy of such metrics. This is demonstrated using a modification of the 1-parameter Seiberg-Witten invariants which we introduced in earlier work. The invariant shows that the diffeomorphism group of the underlying 4-manifold is disconnected. We also study the moduli space of positive scalar curvature metrics modulo diffeomorphism, and give examples to show that this spa…
Generalizing the canonical symplectization of contact manifolds, we construct an infinite dimensional non-linear Stiefel manifold of weighted embeddings into a contact manifold. This space carries a symplectic structure such that the contact group and the group of reparametrizations act in a Hamiltonian fashion with equivariant moment maps, respectively, giving rise to a dual pair, called the EPContact dual pair. Via symplectic reduction, this dual pair provides a conceptual identification of non-linear Grassmannians of weighted submanifolds with certain coadjoint orbits of the contact group. …
A smooth diffeomorphism is said to be distributionally uniquely ergodic (DUE for short) when it is uniquely ergodic and its unique invariant probability measure is the only invariant distribution (up to multiplication by a constant). Ergodic translations on tori are classical examples of DUE diffeomorphisms. In this article we construct DUE diffeomorphisms supported on closed manifolds different from tori, providing some counterexamples to a conjecture proposed by Forni in [For08].
Let $A$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle over a hyperbolic dynamical system with values in the group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold $M$. We consider the periodic data of $A$, i.e., the set of its return values along the periodic orbits in the base. We show that if the periodic data of $A$ is bounded in Diff$^{\,q}(M)$, $q>1$, then the set of values of the cocycle is bounded in Diff$^{\,r}(M)$ for each $r<q$. Moreover, such a cocycle is isometric with respect to a Hölder continuous family of Riemannian metrics on $M$.
Let S be a compact surface - or the interior of a compact surface - and let V be the manifold of cooriented contact elements of S equiped with its canonical contact structure. A diffeomorphism of V that preserves the contact structure and its coorientation is called a contact transformation over S. We prove the following results. 1) If S is neither a sphere nor a torus then the inclusion of the diffeomorphism group of S into the contact transformation group is 0-connected. 2) If S is a sphere then the contact transformation group is connected. 3) if S is a torus then the homomorphism from the …
We study the action of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a compact symplectic manifold ($X,ω$) on $C^\infty(X)$ and on functions $C^\infty(X)\to \mathbb R$. We describe various properties of invariant convex functions on $C^\infty(X)$. Among other things we show that continuous convex functions $C^\infty(X)\to \mathbb R$ that are invariant under the action are automatically invariant under so called strict rearrangements and they are continuous in the sup norm topology of $C^\infty(X)$; but this is not generally true if the convexity condition is dropped.
We extend the adiabatic limit formula for eta-invariants by Bismut-Cheeger and Dai to Seifert fibrations. Our formula contains a new contribution from the singular fibres that takes the form of a generalised Dedekind sum. As an application, we compute the Eells-Kuiper and t-invariants of certain cohomogeneity one manifolds that were studied by Dearricott, Grove, Verdiani, Wilking, and Ziller. In particular, we determine the diffeomorphism type of a new manifold of positive sectional curvature.
We prove, for a class of contact manifolds, that the universal cover of the group of contact diffeomorphisms carries a natural partial order. It leads to a new viewpoint on geometry and dynamics of contactomorphisms. It gives rise to invariants of contactomorphisms which generalize the classical notion of the rotation number. Our approach is based on tools of Symplectic Topology.
An invariant description of Bianchi Homogeneous (B.H.) 3-spaces is presented, by considering the action of the Automorphism Group on the configuration space of the real, symmetric, positive definite, $3\times 3$ matrices. Thus, the gauge degrees of freedom are removed and the remaining (gauge invariant) degrees, are the --up to 3-- curvature invariants. An apparent discrepancy between this Kinematics and the Quantum Hamiltonian Dynamics of the lower Class A Bianchi Types, occurs due to the existence of the Outer Automorphism Subgroup. This discrepancy is satisfactorily removed by exploiting th…
We compute the quotient of the self-duality equation for conformal metrics by the action of the diffeomorphism group. We also determine Hilbert polynomial, counting the number of independent scalar differential invariants depending on the jet-order, and the corresponding Poincaré function. We describe the field of rational differential invariants separating generic orbits of the diffeomorphism pseudogroup action, resolving the local recognition problem for self-dual conformal structures.
The structure of a diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangians for an extended object W embedded in a bulk space M is discussed by following a close analogy with the relativistic particle in electromagnetic field as a system that is reparametrization-invariant. The current construction naturally contains, relativistic point particle, string theory, and Dirac--Nambu--Goto Lagrangians with Wess--Zumino terms. For Lorentzian metric field, the non-relativistic theory of an integrally submerged W-brane is well defined provided that the brane does not alter the background interaction fields. A natural time…
