Let $A \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 2$, be a compact convex set and let $μ= \varrho_0 dx$ be a probability measure on $A$ equivalent to the restriction of Lebesgue measure. Let $ν= \varrho_1 dx$ be a probability measure on $B_r := \{x\colon |x| \le r\}$ equivalent to the restriction of Lebesgue measure. We prove that there exists a mapping $T$ such that $ν= μ\circ T^{-1}$ and $T = ϕ\cdot {\rm n}$, where $ϕ\colon A \to [0,r]$ is a continuous potential with convex sub-level sets and ${\rm n}$ is the Gauss map of the corresponding level sets of $ϕ$. Moreover, $T$ is invertible and essentially unique. Our proof employs the optimal transportation techniques. We show that in the case of smooth $ϕ$ the level sets of $ϕ$ are driven by the Gauss curvature flow $\dot{x}(s) = -s^{d-1} \frac{\varrho_1(s {\rm n})}{\varrho_0(x)} K(x) \cdot {\rm n}(x)$, where $K$ is the Gauss curvature. As a by-product one can reprove the existence of weak solutions of the classical Gauss curvature flow starting from a convex hypersurface.
We show relation between sign of Gaussian curvature of cuspidal edge and geometric invariants through types of singularities of Gauss map. Moreover, we define and characterize positivity/negativity of cusps of Gauss maps by geometric invariants of cuspidal edges, and show relation between sign of cusps and of the Gaussian curvature.
We study singularities of Gauss maps of fronts and give characterizations of types of singularities of Gauss maps by geometric properties of fronts which are related to behavior of bounded principal curvatures. Moreover, we investigate relation between a kind of boundedness of Gaussian curvatures near cuspidal edges and types of singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges. Further, we consider extended height functions on fronts with non-degenerate singular points.
We characterise the maps into the space of $2$-spheres in $S^n$ that are the conformal Gauss maps of conformal immersions of a surface. In particular, we give an invariant formulation and efficient proof of a characterisation, due to Dorfmeister--Wang \cites{DorWan13,DorWan}, of the harmonic maps that are conformal Gauss maps of Willmore surfaces.
We present conditions on the Ricci curvature for complete, oriented, minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space, as well as the standard unit sphere, when the Gauss maps are bounded embeddings.
We construct a weakly complete flat surface in hyperbolic 3-space having a pair of hyperbolic Gauss maps both of whose images are contained in an arbitrarily given open disc in the ideal boundary of H^3. This construction is accomplished as an application of the minimal surface theory. This looks an interesting phenomenon if one comparing the fact that there are no complete minimal (resp. constant mean curvature one) surfaces in R^3 (resp. H^3) having bounded Gauss maps (resp. bounded hyperbolic Gauss maps).
To study spacelike surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $\Bbb R^{4}_1,$ we construct a pair of maps whose values are in the lightcone, called $\mathfrak l_r^{\pm} $-Gauss maps. We can use these maps to study umbilical spacelike surfaces and find parametrizations of spacelike surfaces of revolution of hyperbolic and eliptic types in some particular cases.
We consider conformal immersions of Riemann surfaces in $\bb{S}^4$ and study their Gauss maps with values in the Grassmann bundle $\mathcal{F} = SO_5/T^2 \to \mathbb{S}^4$. The energy of maps from Riemann surfaces into $\mathcal{F}$ is considered with respect to the normal metric on the target and immersions with harmonic Gauss maps are characterized. We also show that the normal-harmonic map equation for Gauss maps is a completely integrable system, thus giving a partial answer of a question posed by Y. Ohnita in \cite{ohnita}. Associated $\mathbb{S}^1$-families of parallel mean curvature imm…
In this paper, we study the Gauss map of surfaces in 3-dimensional Heisenberg group using the Gans model of the hyperbolic plane. We establish a relationship between the tension field of the Gauss map and mean curvature of a surface in $\mathcal{H}_{3}$.
In this paper, we investigate the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow. A Ricci-mean curvature flow is a coupled equation of a mean curvature flow and a Ricci flow on the ambient manifold. Ruh and Vilms proved that the Gauss map of a minimal submanifold in a Euclidean space is a harmonic map, and Wang extended this result to a mean curvature flow in a Euclidean space by proving its Gauss maps satisfy the harmonic map heat flow equation. In this paper, we deduce the evolution equation for the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow, and as a direct corollary we prove that the Gauss maps …
It is proved some results about existence and non existence of unit normal sections of submanifolds of the Euclidean space and sphere which associated Gauss maps are harmonic. Some applications to CMC hypersurfaces of the sphere and isoparametric submanifolds are obtained too.
Demoulin surfaces in real projective $3$-space are investigated. Our result enable us to establish a generalized Weierstrass type representation for definite Demoulin surfaces by virtue of primitive maps into a certain semi-Riemannian $6$-symmetric space.
The authors study in detail new types of varieties with degenerate Gauss maps: varieties with multiple foci and their particular case, the so-called twisted cones. They prove an existence theorem for twisted cones and describe their structure.
To study spacelike surfaces of codimension two in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $\Bbb R^{n+1}_1,$ we construct a pair of maps whose values are in $HS_r:=H_+^n(\textbf v,1)\cap \{x_{n+1}=r\},$ called $\textbf n_r^{\pm}$-Gauss maps. It is showed that they are well-defined and useful to study practically flat as well as umbilic spacelike surfaces of codimension two in $\Bbb R^{n+1}_1.$
In this paper, we determine the type numbers of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss maps of all oriented Lorentzian surfaces of constant mean and Gaussian curvatures and non-diagonalizable shape operator in the $3$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Also, we investigate the behavior of type numbers of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss map along the parallel family of such oriented Lorentzian surfaces in the $3$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Furthermore, we investigate the type number of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss map of one of Lorentzian hypersurfaces of B-scroll type in a general dimensional anti-de Si…
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth oriented complete embedded minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with Euclidean volume growth. We show that if the image under the Gauss map of $M$ avoids some neighborhood of a half-equator, then $M$ must be an affine hyperplane.
We study the rigidity results for self-shrinkers in Euclidean space by restriction of the image under the Gauss map. The geometric properties of the target manifolds carry into effect. In the self-shrinking hypersurface situation Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.2 not only improve the previous results, but also are optimal. In higher codimensional case, using geometric properties of the Grassmanian manifolds (the target manifolds of the Gauss map) we give a rigidity theorem for self-shrinking graphs.
We investigate Gauss maps associated to great circle fibrations of $S^3$. We show that the associated Gauss map to such a fibration is harmonic (respectively minimal) if and only if the unit vector field generating the great circle foliation is harmonic (respectively minimal). These results can be viewed as analogues of the classical theorem of Ruh and Vilms about the harmonicity of the Gauss map of a minimal submanifold in the euclidean space. Moreover, we prove that a harmonic or minimal unit vector field in $S^3$ with great circle integral curves is a Hopf vector field.
It is well-known that for a surface in a 3-dimensional real space form the constancy of the mean curvature is equivalent to the harmonicity of the Gauss map. However, this is not true in general for surfaces in an arbitrary 3-dimensional ambient space. In this paper we study this problem for surfaces in an important and very natural family of 3-dimensional ambient spaces, namely homogeneous spaces. In particular, we obtain a full classification of constant mean curvature surfaces, whose Gauss map satisfies the more mild condition of vertical harmonicity, in all 3-dimensional homogeneous spaces…
Optimal maps, solutions to the optimal transportation problems, are completely determined by the corresponding c-convex potential functions. In this paper, we give simple sufficient conditions for a smooth function to be c-convex when the cost is given by minimizing a Lagrangian action.
We study optimal transportation with the quadratic cost function in geodesic metric spaces satisfying suitable non-branching assumptions. We introduce and study the notions of slope along curves and along geodesics and we apply the latter to prove suitable generalizations of Brenier's theorem of existence of optimal maps.
We introduce a more restrictive version of the strict $CD(K,\infty)$ -condition, the so-called very strict $CD(K,\infty)$ -condition, and show the existence of optimal maps in very strict $CD(K,\infty)$ -spaces despite the possible lack of uniqueness of optimal plans.
The classical result of Nevanlinna states that two nonconstant meromorphic functions on the complex plane having the same images for five distinct values must be identically equal to each other. In this paper, we give a similar uniqueness theorem for the Gauss maps of complete minimal surfaces in Euclidean four-space.
Generalized are the investigated in other works of the author transports along paths in fibre bundles to transports along arbitrary maps in them. Their structure and some properties are studied. Special attention is paid to the linear case and the case when the map's domain is a Cartesian product of two sets. Also considered are the consistency with bundle morphisms and a number of special cases.
We give an effective estimate for the totally ramified value number of the hyperbolic Gauss maps of complete flat fronts in the hyperbolic three-space. As a corollary, we give the upper bound of the number of exceptional values of them for some topological cases. Moreover, we obtain some new examples for this class.
We elucidate the geometric background of function-theoretic properties for the Gauss maps of several classes of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional space forms, for example, minimal surfaces in Euclidean three-space, improper affine spheres in the affine three-space, and constant mean curvature one surfaces and flat surfaces in hyperbolic three-space. To achieve this purpose, we prove an optimal curvature bound for a specified conformal metric on an open Riemann surface and give some applications. We also provide unicity theorems for the Gauss maps of these classes of surfaces.
The Gauss map of a conformal minimal immersion of an open Riemann surface $M$ into $\mathbb R^3$ is a meromorphic function on $M$. In this paper, we prove that the Gauss map assignment, taking a full conformal minimal immersion $M\to\mathbb R^3$ to its Gauss map, is a Serre fibration. We then determine the homotopy type of the space of meromorphic functions on $M$ that are the Gauss map of a complete full conformal minimal immersion, and show that it is the same as the homotopy type of the space of all continuous maps from $M$ to the 2-sphere. We obtain analogous results for the generalised Ga…
We present in this article a survey of recent results in value distribution theory for the Gauss maps of several classes of immersed surfaces in space forms, for example, minimal surfaces in Euclidean $n$-space ($n$=3 or 4), improper affine spheres in the affine 3-space and flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space. In particular, we elucidate the geometric background of their results.
We prove that the general fibre of the $i$-th Gauss map has dimension $m$ if and only if at the general point the $(i+1)$-th fundamental form consists of cones with vertex a fixed $\mathbb P^{m-1}$, extending a known theorem for the usual Gauss map. We prove this via a recursive formula for expressing higher fundamental forms. We also show some consequences of these results.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a smooth local map of a Riemannian manifold $M^m$ into the sphere $S^m$ to be the Gauss map of an isometric immersion $u:M^m \to R^n$, $n=m+1$. We briefly discuss the case of general $n$ as well
The main goal of this paper is to reveal the geometric meaning of the maximal number of exceptional values of Gauss maps for several classes of immersed surfaces in space forms, for example, complete minimal surfaces in the Euclidean three-space, weakly complete improper affine spheres in the affine three-space and weakly complete flat surfaces in the hyperbolic three-space. For this purpose, we give an effective curvature bound for a specified conformal metric on an open Riemann surface.
We give an alternative proof for the fact that in $n$-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below there exists a unique optimal transport plan from any purely $(n-1)$-unrectifiable starting measure, and that this plan is induced by an optimal map.
In this paper we give a new proof of a theorem by Alexandrov on the Gauss curvature prescription of Euclidean convex sets. This proof is based on the duality theory of convex sets and on optimal mass transport. A noteworthy property of this proof is that it does not rely neither on the theory of convex polyhedra nor on P.D.E. methods (which appeared in all the previous proofs of this result).
In this paper we investigate the relationship between a general existence of transport maps of optimal couplings with absolutely continuous first marginal and the property of the background measure called essentially non-branching introduced by Rajala-Sturm (Calc.Var.PDE 2014). In particular, it is shown that the qualitative non-degenericity condition introduced by Cavalletti-Huesmann (Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Anal. Non Linèaire 2015) implies that any essentially non-branching metric measure space has a unique transport maps whenever initial measure is absolutely continuous. This generalizes a r…
We prove that any complete, uniformly elliptic Weingarten surface in Euclidean $3$-space whose Gauss map image omits an open hemisphere is a cylinder or a plane. This generalizes a classical theorem by Hoffman, Osserman and Schoen for constant mean curvature surfaces. In particular, this proves that planes are the only complete, uniformly elliptic Weingarten multigraphs. We also show that this result holds for a large class of non-uniformly elliptic Weingarten equations. In particular, this solves in the affirmative the Bernstein problem for entire graphs for that class of elliptic equations. …
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold and let $μ$,d be the associated measure and distance on M. Robert McCann obtained, generalizing results for the Euclidean case by Yann Brenier, the polar factorization of Borel maps S : M -> M pushing forward $μ$ to a measure $ν$: each S factors uniquely a.e. into the composition S = T \circ U, where U : M -> M is volume preserving and T : M -> M is the optimal map transporting $μ$ to $ν$ with respect to the cost function d^2/2. In this article we study the polar factorization of conformal and projective maps of the sphere S^n. For conformal maps, which m…
