We investigate the Bilinear Hilbert Transform in the plane and the pointwise convergence of bilinear averages in Ergodic theory, arising from $\Z^2$ actions. Our techniques combine novel one and a half dimensional phase-space analysis with more standard one dimensional theory.
Let ${\bf X}=(X, Σ, m, τ)$ be a dynamical system. We prove that the bilinear series $\sideset{}{'}\sum_{n=-N}^{N}\frac{f(τ^nx)g(τ^{-n}x)}{n}$ converges almost everywhere for each $f,g\in L^{\infty}(X).$ We also give a proof along the same lines of Bourgain's analog result for averages.
We study the bilinear Hilbert transform and bilinear maximal functions associated to polynomial curves and obtain uniform $L^r$ estimates for $r>\frac{d-1}{d}$ and this index is sharp up to the end point.
We prove that the bilinear Hilbert transforms and maximal functions along certain general plane curves are bounded from $L^2(\mathbb{R})\times L^2(\mathbb{R})$ to $L^1(\mathbb{R})$.
We establish an L^2 \times L^2 to L^1 estimate for the bilinear Hilbert transform along a curve defined by a monomial. Our proof is closely related to multi-linear oscillatory integrals.
We prove the boundedness of a class of tri-linear operators consisting of a quasi piece of bilinear Hilbert transform whose scale equals to or dominates the scale of its linear counter part. Such type of operators is motivated by the tri-linear Hilbert transform and its curved versions.
Muscalu, Pipher, Tao and Thiele \cite{MPTT} showed that the tensor product between two one dimensional paraproducts (also known as bi-parameter paraproduct) satisfies all the expected $L^p$ bounds. In the same paper they showed that the tensor product between two bilinear Hilbert transforms is unbounded in any range. They also raised the question about $L^p$ boundedness of the bilinear Hilbert transform tensor product with a paraproduct. We answer their question by obtaining a wide range of estimates for this hybrid bilinear operator. Our method relies on new vector valued estimates for a fami…
We prove old and new $L^p$ bounds for the quartile operator, a Walsh model of the bilinear Hilbert transform, uniformly in the parameter that models degeneration of the bilinear Hilbert transform. We obtain the full range of exponents that can be expected from known bounds in the degenerate and non-degenerate cases. For the new estimates with exponents p close to 1 the argument relies on a multi-frequency Calderon-Zygmund decomposition.
We are proving $L^2(\R)\times L^2(\R)\,\rightarrow\,L^1(\R)$ bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transform $H_Γ$ along curves $Γ=(t,-γ(t))$ with $γ$ being a smooth "non-flat" curve near zero and infinity.
We prove variation-norm estimates for the Walsh model of the truncated bilinear Hilbert transform, extending related results of Lacey, Thiele, and Demeter. The proof uses analysis on the Walsh phase plane and two new ingredients: (i) a variational extension of a lemma of Bourgain by Nazarov-Oberlin-Thiele, and (ii) a variation-norm Rademacher-Menshov theorem of Lewko-Lewko.
In this paper, we determine the $L^p(\mathbb{R})\times L^q(\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L^r(\mathbb{R})$ boundedness of the bilinear Hilbert transform $H_γ(f,g)$ along a convex curve $γ$ $$H_γ(f,g)(x):=\mathrm{p.\,v.}\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}f(x-t)g(x-γ(t)) \,\frac{\textrm{d}t}{t},$$ where $p$, $q$, and $r$ satisfy $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{r}$, and $r>\frac{1}{2}$, $p>1$, and $q>1$. Moreover, the same $L^p(\mathbb{R})\times L^q(\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L^r(\mathbb{R})$ boundedness property holds for the corresponding (sub)bilinear maximal function $M_γ(f,g)$ along a convex curve $γ$ $$M_γ(f,g)(…
We prove that the bilinear Hilbert transform along two polynomials $B_{P,Q}(f,g)(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}}f(x-P(t))g(x-Q(t))\frac{dt}{t}$ is bounded from $L^p \times L^q$ to $L^r$ for a large range of $(p,q,r)$, as long as the polynomials $P$ and $Q$ have distinct leading and trailing degrees. The same boundedness property holds for the corresponding bilinear maximal function $\mathcal{M}_{P,Q}(f,g)(x)=\sup_{ε>0}\frac{1}{2ε}\int_{-ε}^ε |f(x-P(t))g(x-Q(t))|dt$.
We prove $L^p$-bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transform acting on functions valued in intermediate UMD spaces. Such bounds were previously unknown for UMD spaces that are not Banach lattices. Our proof relies on bounds on embeddings from Bochner spaces $L^p(\mathbb{R};X)$ into outer Lebesgue spaces on the time-frequency-scale space $\mathbb{R}^3_+$.
In this paper we introduce the class of bilinear Hilbert--Carleson operators $\{BC^a\}_{a>0}$ defined by $$ BC^{a}(f,g)(x):= \sup_{λ\in {\mathbb R}} \Big|\int f(x-t)\, g(x+t)\, e^{iλt^a} \, \frac{dt}{t} \Big| $$ and show that in the non-resonant case $a\in (0,\infty)\setminus\{1,2\}$ the operator $BC^a$ extends continuously from $L^p({\mathbb R})\times L^q({\mathbb R})$ into $L^r({\mathbb R})$ whenever $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{r}$ with $1<p,\,q\leq\infty$ and $\frac{2}{3}<r<\infty$. A key novel feature of these operators is that -- in the non-resonant case -- $BC^{a}$ has a \emph{hybr…
We prove uniform uniform $L^{p}$ bounds for the family of bilinear Hilbert transforms $\mathrm{BHT}_β [f_1, f_2] (x) := \mathrm{p.v.} \int_{\mathbb{R}} f_1 (x - t) f_2 (x + βt) \frac{\mathrm{d} t}{t}$. We show that the operator $\mathrm{BHT}_β$ maps $L^{p_{1}}\times L^{p_{2}}$ into $L^{p}$ as long as $p_1 \in (1, \infty)$, $p_2 \in (1, \infty)$, and $p > \frac{2}{3}$ with a bound independent of $β\in(0,1]$. This is the full open range of exponents where the modulation invariant class of bilinear operators containing $\mathrm{BHT}_β$ can be bounded uniformly. This is done by proving boundedness…
We prove a limited range, off-diagonal extrapolation theorem that generalizes a number of results in the theory of Rubio de Francia extrapolation, and use this to prove a limited range, multilinear extrapolation theorem. We give two applications of this result to the bilinear Hilbert transform. First, we give sufficient conditions on a pair of weights $w_1,\,w_2$ for the bilinear Hilbert transform to satisfy weighted norm inequalities of the form \[ BH : L^{p_1}(w_1^{p_1}) \times L^{p_2}(w_2^{p_2}) \longrightarrow L^p(w^p), \] where $w=w_1w_2$ and $\frac{1}{p}=\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}<\frac…
M. Lacey and C. Thiele proved in [27] (Annals of Math. (1997)) and [28] (Annals of Math. (1999)) that the bilinear Hilbert transform maps $L^{p_1}\times L^{p_2}\rightarrow L^{p}$ boundedly when $\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}=\frac{1}{p}$ with $1<p_{1}, \, p_{2}\leq\infty$ and $\frac{2}{3}<p<\infty$. Whether the $L^p$ estimates hold in the range $p\in (1/2,2/3]$ has remained an open problem since then. In this paper, we prove that the bilinear Hilbert transform does not map $\mathcal{F}L^{p'_{1}}\times L^{p_{2}}\rightarrow L^{p}$ for $p_1<2$ and $L^{p_{1}}\times \mathcal{F}L^{p'_{2}}\rightarrow L…
In this paper we solve a long standing problem about the multivariable Rubio de Francia extrapolation theorem for the multilinear Muckenhoupt classes $A_{\vec{p}}$, which were extensively studied by Lerner et al. and which are the natural ones for the class of multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. Furthermore, we go beyond the classes $A_{\vec{p}}$ and extrapolate within the classes $A_{\vec{p},\vec{r}}$ which appear naturally associated to the weighted norm inequalities for multilinear sparse forms which control fundamental operators such as the bilinear Hilbert transform. We give several a…
We generalize the respective ``double recurrence'' results of Bourgain and of the second author, which established for pairs of $L^{\infty}$ functions on a finite measure space the a.e. convergence of the discrete bilinear ergodic averages and of the discrete bilinear Hilbert averages defined by invertible measure-preserving point transformations. Our generalizations are set in the context of arbitrary sigma-finite measure spaces and take the form of a.e. convergence of such discrete averages, as well as of their continuous variable counterparts, when these averages are defined by Lebesgue spa…
C. Muscalu, J. Pipher, T. Tao and C. Thiele proved in \cite{MPTT1} that the standard bilinear and bi-parameter Hilbert transform does not satisfy any $L^{p}$ estimates. They also raised a question asking if a bilinear and bi-parameter multiplier operator defined by $$ T_{m}(f_{1},f_{2})(x):=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{4}}m(ξ,η)\hat{f_{1}}(ξ_{1},η_{1})\hat{f_{2}}(ξ_{2},η_{2})e^{2πix\cdot((ξ_{1},η_{1})+(ξ_{2},η_{2}))}dξdη$$ satisfies any $L^p$ estimates, where the symbol $m$ satisfies $$ |\partial_ξ^α\partial_η^βm(ξ,η)|\lesssim\frac{1}{dist(ξ,Γ_{1})^{|α|}}\cdot\frac{1}{dist(η,Γ_{2})^{|β|}} $$ for sufficie…
We show that the bilinear Hilbert transform $H_Γ$ along curves $Γ=(t,-γ(t))$ with $γ\in\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}^{C}$ is bounded from $L^{p}(\mathbb{R})\times L^{q}(\mathbb{R})\,\rightarrow\,L^{r}(\mathbb{R})$ where $p,\,q,\,r$ are Hölder indices, i.e. $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{r}$, with $1<p<\infty$, $1<q\leq\infty$ and $1\leq r<\infty$. Here $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}^{C}$ stands for a wide class of smooth "non-flat" curves near zero and infinity whose precise definition is given in Section 2. This continues author's earlier work on this topic, extending the boundedness range of $H_Γ$ to a…
We give one sufficient and two necessary conditions for boundedness between Lebesgue or Lorentz spaces of several classes of bilinear multiplier operators closely connected with the bilinear Hilbert transform.
We study the behavior of the bilinear Hilbert transform $\mathrm{BHT}$ at the boundary of the known boundedness region $\mathcal H$. A sample of our results is the estimate $| \langle\mathrm{BHT}(f_1,f_2),f_3 \rangle | \leq C |F_1|^{\frac34}|F_2| ^{\frac34} |F_3|^{-\frac12} \log\log \Big(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{e}} + \frac{|F_3|}{\min\{|F_1|,|F_2|\}} \Big) $ valid for all tuples of sets $F_j \subset \mathbb R $ of finite measure and functions $f_j$ such that $|f_j| \leq \mathbf{1}_{F_j}$, $j=1,2,3$, with the additional restriction that $f_3$ be supported on a major subset $F_3'$ of $F_3$ that depe…
A bilinear inequality of Geba, Greenleaf, Iosevich, Palsson, and Sawyer for the Fourier transform is shown to be equivalent to a simpler linear inequality, and the range of exponents is extended. Related mixed-norm inequalities are discussed.
We prove pointwise variational Lp bounds for a bilinear Fourier integral operator in a large but not necessarily sharp range of exponents. This result is a joint strengthening of the corresponding bounds for the classical Carleson operator, the bilinear Hilbert transform, the variation norm Carleson operator, and the bi-Carleson operator. Terry Lyon's rough path theory allows for extension of our result to multilinear estimates. We consider our result a proof of concept for a wider array of similar estimates with possible applications to ordinary differential equations.
We prove certain $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ bilinear estimates for Fourier extension operators associated to spheres and hyperboloids under the action of the $k$-plane transform. As the estimates are $L^2$-based, they follow from bilinear identities: in particular, these are the analogues of a known identity for paraboloids, and may be seen as higher-dimensional versions of the classical $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$-bilinear identity for Fourier extension operators associated to curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We establish a uniform domination of the family of trilinear multiplier forms with singularity over a one-dimensional subspace by positive sparse forms involving $L^p$-averages. This class includes the adjoint forms to the bilinear Hilbert transforms. Our result strengthens the $L^p$-boundedness proved in \cite{MTT} and entails as a corollary a rich multilinear weighted theory. In particular, we obtain $L^{q_1}(v_1) \times L^{q_2}(v_2)$-boundedness of the bilinear Hilbert transform when the weights $v_j$ belong to the class $A_{\frac{q+1}{2}}\cap RH_2$. Our proof relies on a stopping time cons…
Consider the discrete quadratic phase Hilbert Transform acting on $\ell^{2}$ finitely supported functions $$ H^α f(n) : = \sum_{m \neq 0} \frac{e^{2 πiαm^2} f(n - m)}{m}. $$ We prove that, uniformly in $α\in \mathbb{T}$, there is a sparse bound for the bilinear form $\langle H^α f , g \rangle$. The sparse bound implies several mapping properties such as weighted inequalities in an intersection of Muckenhoupt and reverse Hölder classes.
The so-called triangular Hilbert transform is an elegant trilinear singular integral form which specializes to many well studied objects of harmonic analysis. We investigate $L^p$ bounds for a dyadic model of this form in the particular case when one of the functions on which it acts is essentially one-dimensional. This special case still implies dyadic analogues of boundedness of the Carleson maximal operator and of the uniform estimates for the one-dimensional bilinear Hilbert transform.
We prove that for a large class of functions $P$ and $Q$, there exists $d\in (0,1)$ such that the discrete bilinear Radon transform $$B^{\rm dis}_{P,Q}(f,g)(n)=\sum_{m\in\mathbb{Z}\setminus\{0\}} f(n-P(m))g(n-Q(m))\frac{1}{m}$$ is bounded from $l^2\times l^2$ into $l^{1+ε}$ for any $ε\in (d,1)$. In particular, the boundedness holds for any $ε\in (0,1)$ when $P$ (or $Q$) is the Euler totient function $ϕ(|m|)$ or the prime counting function $π(|m|)$.
We prove a boundedness criterion for a class of dyadic multilinear forms acting on two-dimensional functions. Their structure is more general than the one of classical multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators as several functions can now depend on the same one-dimensional variable. The study of this class is motivated by examples related to the two-dimensional bilinear Hilbert transform and to bilinear ergodic averages. This paper is a sequel to the prior paper arXiv:1108.0917 by the first author.
Let $σ$ be arc-length measure on $S^1\subset \mathbb R^2$ and $Θ$ denote rotation by an angle $θ\in (0, π]$. Define a model bilinear generalized Radon transform, $$B_θ(f,g)(x)=\int_{S^1} f(x-y)g(x-Θy)\, dσ(y),$$ an analogue of the linear generalized Radon transforms of Guillemin and Sternberg \cite{GS} and Phong and Stein (e.g., \cite{PhSt91,St93}). Operators such as $B_θ$ are motivated by problems in geometric measure theory and combinatorics. For $θ<π$, we show that $B_θ: L^p({\Bbb R}^2) \times L^q({\Bbb R}^2) \to L^r({\Bbb R}^2)$ if $\left(\frac{1}{p},\frac{1}{q},\frac{1}{r}\right)\in Q$, t…
We utilize the Bellman function technique to prove a bilinear dimension-free inequality for the Hermite operator. The Bellman technique is applied here to a non-local operator, which at first did not seem to be feasible. As a consequence of our bilinear inequality one proves dimension-free boundedness for the Riesz-Hermite transforms on L^p with linear growth in terms of p. A feature of the proof is a theorem establishing L^p(R^n) estimates for a class of spectral multipliers with bounds independent of n and p. Connections with known results on the Heisenberg group as well as with results for …
We prove the boundedness of the maximal operator and Hilbert transform along certain variable parabolas in $L^p$ for $p>p_0$ with some $p_0\in (1, 2)$. Connections with the Hilbert transform along vector fields and the polynomial Carleson's maximal operator are also discussed.
We show that the truncated simplex Hilbert transform enjoys some cancellation in the sense that its norm grows sublinearly in the number of scales retained in the truncation. This extends the recent result by Tao on cancellation for the multilinear Hilbert transform. Our main tool is the Hilbert space regularity lemma due to Gowers, which enables a very short proof.
We prove the $L^2$ boundedness of the directional Hilbert transform in the plane relative to measurable vector fields which are constant on suitable Lipschitz curves.
We prove the $L^p (p > 3/2)$ boundedness of the directional Hilbert transform in the plane relative to measurable vector fields which are constant on suitable Lipschitz curves.
We show sufficient conditions on matrix weights $U$ and $V$ for the martingale transforms to be uniformly bounded from $L^2(V)$ to $L^2(U)$. We also show that these conditions imply the uniform boundedness of the dyadic shifts as well as the boundedness of the Hilbert transform between these spaces.
We obtain sharp sparse bounds for Hilbert transforms along curves in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and derive as corollaries weighted norm inequalities for such operators. The curves that we consider include monomial curves and arbitrary $C^n$ curves with nonvanishing torsion.
The goal of the paper is to obtain analogs of the sampling theorems and of the Riesz-Boas interpolation formulas which are relevant to the Discrete Hilbert and Kak-Hilbert transforms in $l^{2}$.
We characterize the Hilbert--Schmidt class membership of commutator with the Hilbert transform in the two weight setting. The characterization depends upon the symbol of the commutator being in a new weighted Besov space. This follows from a Schatten class $S_p$ result for dyadic paraproducts, where $1< p < \infty $. We discuss the difficulties in extending the dyadic result to the full range of Schatten classes for the Hilbert transform.
