This work calculates the first correction to the leading order qq dilepton production rates due to shear viscosity in an expanding gas. The modified rates are integrated over the space-time history of a viscous hydrodynamic simulation of RHIC collisions. The net result is a {\em hardening} of $q_\perp$ spectrum with the magnitude of the correction increasing with invariant mass. We argue that a thermal description is reliable for invariant masses less than $M_{max}\approx(2τ_0 T_0^2)/(η/s)$. For reasonable values of the shear viscosity and thermalization time $M_{max}\approx 4.5$ GeV. Finally, the early emission from a viscous medium is compared to emission from a longitudinally free streaming plasma. Qualitative differences in $q_\perp$ spectrum are seen which could be used to extract information on the thermalization time, viscosity to entropy ratio and possibly the thermalization mechanism in heavy-ion collisions.
In the Israel-Stewart's 2nd order hydrodynamics, a viscous effect on dilepton emission from a QGP medium is investigated. Dileptons are strongly affected by QGP viscosity. Large invariant mass dileptons, due to their lower velocity, are less affected by viscosity than the low invariant mass dileptons. We also show that the ratio of photon to dilepton is sensitive to the viscosity and can serve as a viscometer for QGP.
We study the \textit{non-ideal} effects arising due to viscosity (both bulk and shear), equation of state ($ε\neq 3P$) and cavitation on thermal dilepton production from QGP at RHIC energies. We calculate the first order corrections to the dilepton production rates due to shear and bulk viscosities. Ignoring the cavitation can lead to a wrong estimation of dilepton spectra. We show that the shear viscosity can enhance the thermal dilepton spectra whereas the bulk viscosity can suppress it. We present the combined effect of bulk and shear viscosities on the dilepton spectra.
We calculate the production of dileptons and photons in the presence of a nontrivial Polyakov loop in QCD. This is applicable to the semi-Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), at temperatures above but near the critical temperature for deconfinement. The Polyakov loop is small in the semi-QGP, and near unity in the perturbative QGP. Working to leading order in the coupling constant of QCD, we find that there is a mild enhancement, ~ 20%, for dilepton production in the semi-QGP over that in the perturbative QGP. In contrast, we find that photon production is strongly suppressed in the semi-QGP, by about an…
We study the thermal dilepton and photon production from relativistic heavy ion collisions in presence of viscosities by employing the recently developed second order dissipative hydrodynamic formulation estimated within a quasiparticle description of thermal QCD (Quantum Chromo-Dynamics) medium. The sensitivity of shear and bulk viscous pressures to the temperature dependence of relaxation time is analyzed within one dimensional boost invariant expansion of quark gluon plasma (QGP).The dissipative corrections to the phase-space distribution functions upto first order in gradients are obtained…
We consider the thermal production of dileptons and photons at temperatures above the critical temperature in QCD. We use a model where color excitations are suppressed by a small value of the Polyakov loop, the semi Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Comparing the semi-QGP to the perturbative QGP, we find a mild enhancement of thermal dileptons. In contrast, to leading logarithmic order in weak coupling there are far fewer hard photons from the semi-QGP than the usual QGP. To illustrate the possible effects on photon and dileptons production in heavy ion collisions, we integrate the rate with a realis…
The QGP that might be created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is expected to radiate thermal dilepton radiation. However, this thermal dilepton radiation interferes with dileptons originating from hadron decays. In the invariant mass region between the $ϕ$ and $J/Ψ$ peak ($1\,$GeV$\lesssim M_{\ell^+ \ell^-} \lesssim 3 \,$GeV) the most substantial background of hadron decays originates from correlated D$\bar{\mathrm{D}}$-meson decays. We evaluate this background using a Langevin simulation for charm quarks. As background medium we utilize the well-tested UrQMD-hybrid model. The requir…
We report recent progress on causal viscous hydrodynamics for relativistic heavy ion collisions. For fixed specific shear viscosity eta/s, uncertainties in the elliptic flow arising from initial conditions, equation of state, bulk viscosity and numerical viscosity, and the treatment of the highly viscous hadronic stage and freeze-out procedure are analysed. A comparison of current viscous hydrodynamic results with experimental data yields a robust upper limit eta/s < 5/(4pi).
We investigate the properties of the QCD matter across the deconfinement phase transition in the scope of the parton-hadron string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. We present here in particular the results on the electromagnetic radiation, i.e. photon and dilepton production, in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. By comparing our calculations for the heavy-ion collisions to the available data, we determine the relative importance of the various production sources and address the possible origin of the observed strong elliptic flow $v_2$ of direct photons. We argue that the different central…
Dileptons are considered as one of the cleanest signals of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), however, the QGP radiation is masked by many 'background' sources from either hadronic decays or semileptonic decays from correlated charm pairs. In this study we investigate the relative contribution of these channels in heavy-ion collisions from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 8 GeV to 5 TeV with a focus on the competition between the thermal QGP radiation and the semileptonic decays from correlated $D-$meson pairs. As a 'tool' we employ the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach to study dilepton …
Dilepton production from the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is computed using the leading-order (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. It is shown that high-energy dilepton spectrum is sensitive to the initial local-rest-frame momentum-space anisotropy of the QGP. Our findings suggest that it may be possible to constrain the early-time momentum-space anisotropy in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using high-energy dilepton yields.
Viscous modifications to the thermal distributions of quark-antiquarks and gluons have been studied in a quasi-particle description of the quark-gluon-plasma medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments. The model is described in terms of quasi-partons that encode the hot QCD medium effects in their respective effective fugacities. Both shear and bulk viscosities have been taken in to account in the analysis and the modifications to thermal distributions have been obtained by modifying the the energy momentum tensor in view of the non-trivial dispersion relations for the gluo…
Dilepton production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) matched to reproduce lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium. A comparison to the data of the NA60 Collaboration for In+In collisions at 158 AGeV shows that the dilepton spectra are well described by the sum of hadronic and partonic sources, if a collisional broadening of vector mesons is taken into account as well as the off-shell quark-antiquark annihilation (q+qbar->l^+l^- and q+q…
We simulate direct photon production in evolution of viscous QGP medium. Photons from Compton and annihilation processes are considered. Viscous effect on photon production is very strong and reliable simulation is possible only in a limited $p_T$ range. For minimally viscous fluid $η/s$=0.08), direct photons can be reliably computed only up to $p_T \leq$ 1.3 GeV. With reduced viscosity ($η/s$=0.04), the limit increases to $p_T \leq $2GeV.
We obtain the thermal photon and dilepton production rates in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at both zero and nonzero baryon chemical potential using a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) holographic model that is in good quantitative agreement with the thermodynamics of $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD around the crossover transition for baryon chemical potentials up to 400 MeV, which may be reached in the beam energy scan (BES) at RHIC. We find that increasing the temperature $T$ and the baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ enhances the peak present in both spectra. We also obtain the…
In 2nd order causal dissipative theory, space-time evolution of QGP fluid is studied in 2+1 dimensions. Relaxation equations for shear stress tensors are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous QGP fluid, initialized under the same conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in a viscous dynamics, energy density or temperature of the fluid evolve slowly, than in an ideal fluid. Cooling gets slower as viscosity increases. Transverse expansion also increases in a viscous d…
We present a first calculation of the dilepton yield and elliptic flow done with 3+1D viscous hydrodynamical simulations of relativistic heavy ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. A comparison with recent experimental data from the STAR collaboration is made.
The invariant mass spectrum and the elliptic flow of lepton pairs produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC are studied with viscous hydrodynamics. The effects of viscous corrections on dilepton observables are explored. The lepton pairs originating from charm quarks evolving in the viscous background are seen to be a good probe of quark energy loss and gain, as quantified by the dilepton spectrum and by the dilepton elliptic flow.
The non-equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been a topic of intensive research. In this contribution, we explore the nature of heavy quarkonia immersed in a QGP with bulk viscosity. We incorporate the bulk viscous effect through the deformation of the distribution functions of thermal quarks and gluons, with which the color dielectric permittivity can be computed. We use the color dielectric permittivity to compute the heavy quark potential inside a bulk viscous plasma and solve the Schrödinger equation using the potential to obtain the physical properties such as binding e…

The first part of this thesis focuses on the production of thermal dileptons from a hadronic gas at finite temperature. The rates are calculated by an expansion in Pion density and constrained by broken chiral symmetry and vacuum correlation functions, many of which have been measured by experiment. We focus on emission processes having two Pions in the final state. Next, follows a separate discussion on viscous hydrodynamics and its effect on $p_\perp$ spectra and elliptic flow. A non-central hydrodynamic model of Au-Au collisions in 2+1 dimensions is simulated.Off-equilibrium corrections to …
The second order Israel-Stewart-M$\ddot{u}$ller relativistic hydrodynamics has been applied to study the effects of causality on the acoustic oscillation in relativistic fluid. Causal dispersion relations have been derived with non-vanishing shear viscosity, bulk viscosity and thermal conductivity at non-zero temperature and chemical potential. These relations have been used to investigate the fluidity of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) at finite temperature ($T$). Results of the first order dissipative hydrodynamics have been obtained as limiting case of the second order theory. The effects of the c…
The effects of viscosity on the space time evolution of QGP produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC energies have been studied. The entropy generated due to the viscous motion of the fluid has been taken into account in constraining the initial temperature by the final multiplicity (measured at the freeze-out point). The viscous effects on the photon spectra has been introduced consistently through the evolution dynamics and phase space factors of the particles participating in the production process. We notice a stronger effect on the photon spectra originating from QGP than hadronic matter. A…
I discuss viscosity corrections to thermal effects on the static QCD potential within hard-thermal loop resummed perturbation theory and for a strongly coupled, large-N_c conformal field theory dual to five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. I also present model predictions for quarkonium binding energies in the deconfined phase and for suppression of R_{AA}(Upsilon --> e+ e-).
We study the dynamics of open charm production and the dilepton radiation of the semi-leptonic decays of correlated $D\bar D$ pairs versus the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) radiation and hadronic sources in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our study is based on the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach employing a non-perturbative QCD description of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) in terms of dynamical quasiparticles and the EoS based on lattice QCD. We compare the PHSD results for charm observables with the calculations from BAMPS (Boltzmann Approach to Multi…
Starting from IP-Glasma initial conditions, we investigate the effects of bulk pressure on low mass dilepton production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. Though thermal dilepton $v_2$ is affected by the presence of both bulk and shear viscosity, whether or not these effects can be measured depends on the dilepton "cocktail" contribution to the the low mass dilepton $v_2$. Combining the thermal and "cocktail" dileptons, the effects of bulk viscosity on total dilepton $v_2$ is investigated.
Assuming that in the hot dense matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the energy density, entropy density, and pressure as well as the azimuthal and space-time rapidity components of the shear tensor are uniform in the direction transversal to the reaction plane, we derive a set of schematic equations from the Isreal-Stewart causal viscous hydrodynamics. These equations are then used to describe the evolution dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions by taking the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of $1/4π$ for the initial quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase and of ten tim…
The conditions for the development of a Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) for the Quark-gluon Plasma (QGP) flow in a peripheral heavy-ion collision is investigated. The projectile and target side particles are separated by an energetically motivated hypothetical surface, characterized with a phenomenological surface tension. In such a view, a classical potential flow approximation is considered and the onset of the KHI is studied. The growth rate of the instability is computed as function of phenomenological parameters characteristic for the QGP fluid: viscosity, surface tension and flow laye…
Dilepton production in In+In collisions at 158 AGeV is studied within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-Strings Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) matched to reproduce lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium. A comparison to the data of the NA60 Collaboration shows that the low mass dilepton spectra are well described by including a collisional broadening of vector mesons, while the spectra in the intermediate mass range are dominated by off-shell quark-antiquark annihilation in the nonperturbative QGP. In particular, the observed …
The collective behavior of hadrons and of electromagnetic radiation in heavy-ion collisions has been widely used to study the properties of the the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Indeed this collectivity, as measured by anisotropic flow coefficients, can be used to constrain the transport properties of QGP. The goal of this contribution is to investigate the influence of the specific bulk viscosity ($ζ/s$) on dilepton production, both at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. We explore the sensitivity of dileptons to dynamical features that bulk viscosity …
We propose a novel relation between the low-mass enhancement of dielectrons observed at PHENIX and transport coefficients of QGP such as the charge diffusion constant $D$ and the relaxation time $τ_{\rm J}$. We parameterize the transport peak in the spectral function using the second-order relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics by Israel and Stewart. Combining the spectral function and the full (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamical evolution with the lattice EoS, theoretical dielectron spectra and the experimental data are compared. Detailed analysis suggests that the low-mass dilepton enhancement …
We have analysed the invariant mass distribution of dileptons in S+W collisions at 200A GeV as measured by the HELIOS-3 collaboration at CERN SPS. Three scenarios were considered where the collision lead to formation of (i) the quark-gluon plasma, (ii) the ideal hot hadron gas and (iii) the viscous hot hadron gas. The space-time evolution was governed by the minimal extension of the Bjorken hydrodynamics. All the three scenarios indicate excess dileptons in the experiment.
We have studied the space-time evolution of minimally viscous ($\fracη{s}$=0.08) QGP fluid, undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal motion and arbitrary transverse expansion. Relaxation equations for the shear stress tensor components, derived from the phenomenological Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative relativistic fluid, are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous fluid, both initialized under the similar conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in viscous fluid…
It is believed that a novel state of matter - Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) will be transiently produced if normal hadronic matter is subjected to sufficiently high temperature and/or density. We have investigated the possibility of QGP formation in the ultra-relativistic collisions of heavy ions through the electromagnetic probes - photons and dileptons. The formulation of the real and virtual photon production rate from strongly interacting matter is studied in the framework of Thermal Field Theory. Since signals from the QGP will pick up large backgrounds from hadronic matter we have performed a…
We examine the evolution of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) droplets with viscous hydrodynamics and analyze the pion transverse-momentum spectrum, elliptic flow, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry in a granular source model consisting of viscous QGP droplets. The shear viscosity of the QGP droplet speeds up and slows down the droplet evolution in the central and peripheral regions of the droplet, respectively. The effect of the bulk viscosity on the evolution is negligible. Although there are viscous effects on the droplet evolution, the pion momentum spectrum and elliptic flow change littl…
The dynamics of partons and hadrons in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is analyzed within the novel Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which is based on a dynamical quasiparticle model for the partonic phase (DQPM) including a dynamical hadronization scheme. The PHSD model reproduces a large variety of observables from SPS to LHC energies, e.g. the quark-number scaling of elliptic flow, transverse mass and rapidity spectra of charged hadrons, dilepton spectra, open and hidden charm production, collective flow coefficients etc., which are associated with the observ…
We present ECHO-QGP, a numerical code for $(3+1)$-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics designed for the modeling of the space-time evolution of the matter created in high energy nuclear collisions. The code has been built on top of the \emph{Eulerian Conservative High-Order} astrophysical code for general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics [\emph{Del Zanna et al., Astron. Astrophys. 473, 11, 2007}] and here it has been upgraded to handle the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. ECHO-QGP features second-order treatment of causal relativistic viscosity effects in both Minkowskian or Bjor…
Dileptons, as an electromagnetic probe, are crucial to study the properties of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in heavy ion collisions. We calculated the invariant mass spectra and the anisotropic emission of thermal dielectrons from Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$~GeV based on EPOS3. This approach provides a realistic (3+1)-dimensional event-by-event viscous hydrodynamic description of the expanding hot and dense matter with a very particular initial condition, and a large set of hadron data and direct photons (besides $v_{2}$ and $…
Using the newly developed hybrid model VISHNU which connects viscous hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade model, we study the differential and integrated elliptic flow v_2 at different centrality bins for 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions and 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. We find that the average Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity eta/s slightly increases from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, a further study assuming different temperature dependencies for (eta/s)_QGP shows that one cannot uniquely constrain the form of (eta/s)_QGP(T…
The so-called $M_T$ scaling for dilepton spectra at RHIC energies is examined. It is seen that a proper accounting of the complete set of dilepton producing processes forces us to abandon the proposed scaling around $M_T$ = 2.6 GeV, which has been put forward as a possible signature of the presence of quark-matter. Any substantial transverse expansion in the QGP phase itself will also offset this scaling behaviour. The rates of lepton pair production are time--integrated in Bjorken hydrodynamics and the different sources are compared against each other.
We calculate the polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in Au-Au collisions at RHIC Beam Energy Scan range $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=7.7, \dots, 200$ GeV in a state-of-the-art 3+1 dimensional cascade + viscous hydro model vHLLE+UrQMD. We find that the polarization of $Λ$ in the out-of-plane direction decreases substantially with collision energy. We explore the connection between the polarization signal and thermal vorticity and discuss the feed-down and hadronic rescattering effects on the mean polarization of all produced $Λ$ hyperons.
The properties of thermal dilepton production from heavy-ion collisions in the RHIC energy regime are evaluated for invariant masses ranging from 0.5 to 3 GeV. Using an expanding thermal fireball to model the evolution through both quark-gluon and hadronic phases various features of the spectra are addressed. In the low-mass region, due to an expected large background, the focus is on possible medium modifications of the narrow resonance structures from $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons, whereas in the intermediate-mass region the old idea of identifying QGP radiation is reiterated including effects of chemi…
We discuss the latest theoretical results on direct photon and dilepton production from relativistic heavy-ion collisions. While the dilepton spectra at low invariant mass show in-medium effects like a collisional broadening of the vector meson spectral functions, the dilepton yield at high invariant masses (above 1.1 GeV) is dominated by QGP contributions for central heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies. The present status of the photon $v_2$ "puzzle" - a large elliptic flow $v_2$ of the direct photons experimentally observed at RHIC and LHC energies - is also addressed. The role of …

The space-time evolution of the (1+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics with an initial quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is studied numerically. The particle-emitting sources undergo a crossover transition from the QGP to hadronic gas. We take into account a usual shear viscosity for the strongly coupled QGP as well as the bulk viscosity which increases significantly in the crossover region. The two-pion Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry for the viscous hydrodynamic sources is performed. The HBT analyses indicate that the viscosity effect on th…
The vacuum polarisation effects from the nucleon sector lead to large medium modifications of the vector meson masses in the Walecka model. With a quantum hadrodynamic framework including the quantum effects, and using a quasiparticle description for quark gluon plasma(QGP), the dilepton emission rate from the hot and dense matter resulting from relativistic nuclear collisions is calculated. Using a model for the fireball evolution which has been shown to reproduce other observables such as charmonium suppression, photon emission and the abundance of hadronic species, we compare with the dilep…
We present a study of $τ^+ τ^-$ lepton pair production in Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.5 TeV. The larger mass of tau lepton compared to electron and muon leads to considerably small hadronic contribution to the $τ^+ τ^-$ pair invariant mass (M) distribution relative to the production from thermal partonic sources. The quark-antiquark annihilation processes via intermediary virtual photon, Z and Higgs bosons have been considered for the tau lepton production. The contribution from Drell-Yan process is found to dominate over thermal yield for $τ^+ τ^-$ pair mass from 4 to 20 GeV at …
In this article, we will briefly review the recent progress on hydrodynamic modeling and the extraction of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity with an emphasis on results obtained from the hybrid model VISHNU that couples viscous hydrodynamics for the macroscopic expansion of the QGP to the hadron cascade model for the microscopic evolution of the late hadronic stage.
Ideal hydrodynamic simulations are performed to compute the evolution with collision energy of hadron spectra and elliptic flow between AGS and LHC energies. We argue that viscous effects should decrease with increasing energy, improving the applicability of ideal fluid dynamics at higher energies. We show that the increasing radial flow at higher energies pushes the elliptic flow to larger transverse momenta, leading to a peaking and subsequent decrease of the elliptic flow at fixed p_T with increasing collision energy, independent of whether or not there is a phase transition in the equation…
Non-equilibrium dynamics for relativistic fluid or quark gluon plasma (QGP) have already been calculated earlier upto third order using both kinetic and thermodynamic approaches. Calculations presented in this manuscript are based on thermodynamics principles. The expressions for third order dissipative fluxes have been derived from equation for entropy 4-current developed earlier by A. Muronga. The relaxation equations in the present work have been developed in a simple Bjorken (1+1)D scenario and Eckart frame. The relaxation equations are found to have slightly different values for the coupl…
