We report recent progress on causal viscous hydrodynamics for relativistic heavy ion collisions. For fixed specific shear viscosity eta/s, uncertainties in the elliptic flow arising from initial conditions, equation of state, bulk viscosity and numerical viscosity, and the treatment of the highly viscous hadronic stage and freeze-out procedure are analysed. A comparison of current viscous hydrodynamic results with experimental data yields a robust upper limit eta/s < 5/(4pi).
The recent papers of Jeon and Koch [1] and Asakawa, Heinz, and Muller [2] argue that the event by event fluctuations of the ratio of the positively charged and negatively charged pions provide a distinct signal for a QGP at RHIC/LHC due to differences in those from the QGP phase and the Hadron Gas Phase. In this paper we point out that aside from the questionability of the many assumptions in the treatment used, even following their approach there are other effects not considered, e.g. color charge fluctuations, which could significantly or even completely wash out the proposed signal. Therefore …
Combining the hydrodynamic equations for the QGP evolution and the transport equation for the primordially produced $J/ψ$ in the QGP, we investigate the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum distribution as well as its suppression in the $\sqrt{s}$=17.3A GeV Pb-Pb collisions at SPS and $\sqrt{s}$=200A GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC. The two sets of equations are connected by the $J/ψ$ anomalous suppression induced by its inelastic scattering with gluons in the QGP. The calculated centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression and average transverse momentum square agree well with the SPS data. From the comparis…
The bulk of the hot and dense matter created at RHIC behaves like an almost ideal fluid. I present the evidence for this and also discuss what we can learn about the transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) from the gradual breakdown of ideal fluid dynamic behavior at large transverse momenta, lower beam energies, larger impact parameters, and forward rapidities.
We calculate the polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in Au-Au collisions at RHIC Beam Energy Scan range $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=7.7, \dots, 200$ GeV in a state-of-the-art 3+1 dimensional cascade + viscous hydro model vHLLE+UrQMD. We find that the polarization of $Λ$ in the out-of-plane direction decreases substantially with collision energy. We explore the connection between the polarization signal and thermal vorticity and discuss the feed-down and hadronic rescattering effects on the mean polarization of all produced $Λ$ hyperons.
Since the early eighties, we have shared with Leon Van Hove the following view. That if a QGP were produced in high energy heavy ion colliders, that its hadronization products would likely come from small localized in phase space bubbles of plasma. We develop a model based on HIJING, to which we added a ring of adjoining multiple bubbles in the central rapidity region. Our simulations were designed to be tested by the forthcoming RHIC STAR detector data for 65 GeV/n Au colliding with 65 GeV/n Au. We took into account background and resonance effects to allow a direct comparison with the data. …
I discuss how the initial conditions for QGP-production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at the LHC and RHIC can be computed from perturbative QCD.
In this article, we briefly review the recent progress related to extracting the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity from the flow data measured at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
We address the principles governing QGP hadronization and particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We argue that chemical non-equilibrium is required and show that once this condition is assumed a very good description of hadron production in collider RHIC and at LHC heavy ion experiments follows. We present results of our analysis as a function of centrality. Comparing most extreme experimental conditions we show that only the reaction volume and degree of strangeness phase space saturation change. We determine the universal QGP fireball hadronization conditions.
Three empirical lines of evidence from RHIC have converged and point to the discovery of a strongly coupled Quark Gluon Plasma. The evidence includes (1) bulk collective elliptic flow and (2) jet quenching and mono-jet production, observed in Au+Au collisions at 200 AGeV, and (3) a critical control experiment using D+Au at 200 AGeV.
It is widely believed that the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) might be formed in the current heavy ion collisions. It is also widely recognized that the relativistic hydrodynamics is one of the best tools for describing the process of expansion and particlization of QGP. In this paper, by taking into account the effects of thermal motion, a hydrodynamic model including phase transition from QGP state to hadronic state is used to analyze the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of identified charged particles produced in heavy ion collisions. A comparison is made between the theoretical res…
We study, in the dynamically evolving QGP fireball formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC, the growth of strangeness yield toward and beyond the chemical equilibrium. We account for the contribution of the direct strangeness production and evaluate the thermal-QCD strangeness production mechanisms. The specific yield of strangeness per entropy, s/S, is the primary target variable. We explore the effect of collision impact parameter, i.e., fireball size, on kinetic strangeness chemical equilibration in QGP. Insights gained in study the RHIC data with regard to the dynamics …
We discuss the present collective flow signals for the phase transition to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and the collective flow as a barometer for the equation of state (EoS). A study of Mach shocks induced by fast partonic jets propagating through the QGP is given. We predict a significant deformation of Mach shocks in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC and LHC energies as compared to the case of jet propagation in a static medium. Results of a hydrodynamical study of jet energy loss are presented.
In off-central heavy-ion collisions, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is exposed to the strongest magnetic fields ever created in the universe. Due to the paramagnetic nature of the QGP at high temperatures, the spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field configuration exerts an anisotropic force density that competes with the pressure gradients resulting from purely geometric effects. In this paper, we simulate (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics with external magnetic fields to estimate the effect of this force density on the anisotropic expansion of the QGP in collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. Wh…
We simulate direct photon production in evolution of viscous QGP medium. Photons from Compton and annihilation processes are considered. Viscous effect on photon production is very strong and reliable simulation is possible only in a limited $p_T$ range. For minimally viscous fluid $η/s$=0.08), direct photons can be reliably computed only up to $p_T \leq$ 1.3 GeV. With reduced viscosity ($η/s$=0.04), the limit increases to $p_T \leq $2GeV.
We have analysed the preliminary PHENIX data on the transverse momentum distribution of direct photons in 0-20% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. In ideal hydrodynamics, data are explained if Au+Au collision produces Quark-Gluon-Plasma at the temperature $T_i$=400 MeV, at an initial time $τ_i$=0.6 fm. PHENIX data are not explained in the alternate scenario when Au+Au collisions produces hot hadronic gas with initial temperature within physically acceptable limit.
This work calculates the first correction to the leading order qq dilepton production rates due to shear viscosity in an expanding gas. The modified rates are integrated over the space-time history of a viscous hydrodynamic simulation of RHIC collisions. The net result is a {\em hardening} of $q_\perp$ spectrum with the magnitude of the correction increasing with invariant mass. We argue that a thermal description is reliable for invariant masses less than $M_{max}\approx(2τ_0 T_0^2)/(η/s)$. For reasonable values of the shear viscosity and thermalization time $M_{max}\approx 4.5$ GeV. Finally,…
In this proceeding, we briefly describe the viscous hydrodynamics + hadron cascade hybrid model VISHNU for relativistic heavy ion collisions and report the current status on extracting the QGP viscosity from elliptic flow data.
In an earlier work (arXiv:0808.0953) we established that causal Israel-Stewart viscous hydrodynamics is only accurate in RHIC applications at very low shear viscosities 4 pi eta_s / s < ~ 1.5-2. We show here that the region of applicability is significantly reduced if bulk viscosity plays a role in the dynamics.
In 2nd order causal dissipative theory, space-time evolution of QGP fluid is studied in 2+1 dimensions. Relaxation equations for shear stress tensors are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous QGP fluid, initialized under the same conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in a viscous dynamics, energy density or temperature of the fluid evolve slowly, than in an ideal fluid. Cooling gets slower as viscosity increases. Transverse expansion also increases in a viscous d…
We systematically compare an event-by-event transport+viscous hydrodynamics hybrid model to data from the RHIC beam energy scan using a general Bayesian method. We demonstrate how the inclusion of multistrange hadron observables affects the outcome of the Bayesian analysis and conduct an in depth analysis of the viability of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ as probes of the transition region between a deconfined quark-gluon plasma and hadronic phase in heavy ion collisions at higher-end RHIC collision energies. Utilizing UrQMD to model the final hadronic interactions, we examine the collision rates of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ …
Thermalization and collective flow of charm (c) and bottom (b) quarks are evaluated from elastic parton scattering via "D"- and "B"-meson resonances in an expanding, strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma at RHIC. Pertinent drag and diffusion coefficients are implemented into a relativistic Langevin simulation to compute transverse-momentum spectra and azimuthal flow asymmetries (v_2) of c- and b-quarks. Upon hadronization (including coalescence and fragmentation) and semileptonic D- and B-decays, the resulting electron spectra (R_{AA} and v_2) are compared to recent RHIC data.
The current status of Quark-Gluon-Plasma Theory is reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on QGP signatures, the interpretation of current data and what to expect from RHIC in the near future.
The non-equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been a topic of intensive research. In this contribution, we explore the nature of heavy quarkonia immersed in a QGP with bulk viscosity. We incorporate the bulk viscous effect through the deformation of the distribution functions of thermal quarks and gluons, with which the color dielectric permittivity can be computed. We use the color dielectric permittivity to compute the heavy quark potential inside a bulk viscous plasma and solve the Schrödinger equation using the potential to obtain the physical properties such as binding e…
We compare an analytic model of jet quenching, based on the GLV non-Abelian energy loss formalism, to numerical results for the centrality dependent suppression of hadron cross sections in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at RHIC. Simulations of neutral pion quenching versus the size of the colliding nuclear system are presented to high transverse momentum pT. At low and moderate pT, we study the contribution of medium-induced gluon bremsstrahlung to single inclusive hadron production. In Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, the redistribution of the lost energy is shown to play a critical role in yielding …
In central collisions at RHIC, the initial production of heavy quarks will for the first time yield multiple pairs of c-cbar in each central event. If a region of deconfined quarks and gluons is subsequently formed, a new mechanism for the formation of heavy quarkonium bound states will be activated. This will result from the mobility of heavy quarks in the deconfined region, such that bound states can be formed from a quark and an antiquark which were originally produced in separate incoherent interactions. Our model estimates of this effect predict a dramatic increase in the number of observ…
We analyze longitudinal pion spectra from \sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2 GeV to \sqrt {s_{\rm NN}}=20 GeV within Landau's hydrodynamical model and the UrQMD hybrid approach. From the measured data on the widths of the pion rapidity spectra, we extract the sound velocity c_s^2 in the dense stage of the reactions. It is found that the sound velocity has a local minimum (indicating a softest point in the equation of state, EoS) at \sqrt{s_{NN}}= 4-9 GeV, an energy range accessible at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) as well as the RHIC-Beam Energy Scan (RHIC-BES). This softening of the EoS i…
We review the current status of strangeness as signature of the formation and dissociation of the deconfined QGP at the SPS energy scale, and present the status of our considerations for RHIC energies. By analyzing, within the framework of a Fermi statistical model, the hadron abundance and spectra, the properties of a disintegrating, hadron evaporating, deconfined QGP fireball are determined and can be compared with theory for the energy range 160--200AGeV on fixed target. We discuss in more detail our finding that the pion yields occur near to pion condensation condition. Dynamical models of…
Polarization of $Λ$ hyperons and their antiparticles is calculated in a 3+1 dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model with initial state from UrQMD hadron/string cascade. We find that, along with recent results from STAR, the mean polarization at fixed centrality decreases as a function of collision energy from 1.5% at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=7.7$ GeV to 0.2% at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. We explore the effects which lead to such collision energy dependence, feed-down corrections and a difference between $Λ$ and $\barΛ$.
The specific shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be extracted from elliptic flow data in heavy-ion collisions by comparing them with the dynamical model VISHNU which couples a viscous fluid dynamic description of the QGP with a microscopic kinetic description of the late hadronic rescattering and freeze-out stage. A robust method for fixing (eta/s)_QGP from the collision centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled charged hadron elliptic flow is presented. The systematic uncertainties associated with this extraction method are discussed, with specific attention to …
I discuss viscosity corrections to thermal effects on the static QCD potential within hard-thermal loop resummed perturbation theory and for a strongly coupled, large-N_c conformal field theory dual to five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. I also present model predictions for quarkonium binding energies in the deconfined phase and for suppression of R_{AA}(Upsilon --> e+ e-).
The second order Israel-Stewart-M$\ddot{u}$ller relativistic hydrodynamics has been applied to study the effects of causality on the acoustic oscillation in relativistic fluid. Causal dispersion relations have been derived with non-vanishing shear viscosity, bulk viscosity and thermal conductivity at non-zero temperature and chemical potential. These relations have been used to investigate the fluidity of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) at finite temperature ($T$). Results of the first order dissipative hydrodynamics have been obtained as limiting case of the second order theory. The effects of the c…
We study the stochastic dynamics of c and b quarks in the hot plasma produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC, providing results for the nuclear modification factor R_AA and the elliptic flow coefficient v_2 of the single-electron spectra arising from their semi-leptonic decays. The initial QQbar pairs are generated using the POWHEG code, implementing pQCD at NLO. For the propagation in the plasma we develop a relativistic Langevin equation (solved in a medium described by hydrodynamics) whose transport coefficients are evaluated through a first-principle calculation. Finally, at…
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was built to re-create and study in the laboratory the extremely hot and dense matter that filled our entire universe during its first few microseconds. Its operation since June 2000 has been extremely successful, and the four large RHIC experiments have produced an impressive body of data which indeed provide compelling evidence for the formation of thermally equilibrated matter at unprecedented temperatures and energy densities -- a "quark-gluon plasma (QGP)". A surprise has been the discovery that this plasma behaves like an almost perfect fluid, w…
The effects of viscosity on the space time evolution of QGP produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC energies have been studied. The entropy generated due to the viscous motion of the fluid has been taken into account in constraining the initial temperature by the final multiplicity (measured at the freeze-out point). The viscous effects on the photon spectra has been introduced consistently through the evolution dynamics and phase space factors of the particles participating in the production process. We notice a stronger effect on the photon spectra originating from QGP than hadronic matter. A…
In the Israel-Stewart's 2nd order hydrodynamics, a viscous effect on dilepton emission from a QGP medium is investigated. Dileptons are strongly affected by QGP viscosity. Large invariant mass dileptons, due to their lower velocity, are less affected by viscosity than the low invariant mass dileptons. We also show that the ratio of photon to dilepton is sensitive to the viscosity and can serve as a viscometer for QGP.
The strong suppression of heavy quarkonia is a good indicator that one has generated a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in an ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision. Recent advancements in first principles calculations of the heavy quark potential provide additional insight into this suppression and can be used to further pin down the in-medium properties of the QGP. Realistic 3+1d dissipative hydrodynamical models can be used to simulate the QGP and, with bottomonium as a probe, one can make inferences for the initial temperature of the QGP and other phenomenological parameters such as the shear visco…
Ideal hydroynamics provides an excellent description of all aspects of the single-particle spectra of all hadrons with transverse momenta below about 1.5-2 GeV/c at RHIC. This is shown to require rapid local thermalization at a time scale below 1 fm/c and at energy densities which exceed the critical value for color deconfinement by an order of magnitude. The only known thermalized state at such energy densities is the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The rapid thermalization indicates that the QGP is a strongly interacting liquid rather than the weakly interacting gas of quarks and gluons that was p…
Within a covariant parton cascade, we discuss the impact of both finite shear viscosity $η$ and freeze-out dynamics on the elliptic flow generated at RHIC. We find that the enhancement of $η/s$ in the cross-over region of the QGP phase transition cannot be neglected in order to extract the information from the QGP phase. We also point out that the elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ for a fluid at $η/s \sim 0.1-0.2$ is consistent with the one needed by quark number scaling drawing a nice consistency between the nearly perfect fluid property of QGP and the coalescence process.
The conditions for the development of a Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) for the Quark-gluon Plasma (QGP) flow in a peripheral heavy-ion collision is investigated. The projectile and target side particles are separated by an energetically motivated hypothetical surface, characterized with a phenomenological surface tension. In such a view, a classical potential flow approximation is considered and the onset of the KHI is studied. The growth rate of the instability is computed as function of phenomenological parameters characteristic for the QGP fluid: viscosity, surface tension and flow laye…
Using the (2+1)-dimensional ultrarelativistic viscous hydrodynamics+hadron cascade, VISHNU, hybrid model, we study the $p_{\rm T}$-spectra and elliptic flow of $Λ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV. Comparing our model results with the data measurements, we find that the VISHNU model gives general descriptions of the measurements of these strange and multi-strange hadrons at several centrality classes at RHIC and LHC. Mass ordering of elliptic flow $v_{2}$ among $π$, $K$, $p$, $Λ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$ are further investiga…
We present a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) using quasi-particle model (QPM) as equation of state (EOS). Other theoretical ingredients incorporated in the model are feed-down from higher resonances namely, $χ_c$, and $ψ^{'}$, dilated formation time for quarkonia and viscous effects of the QGP medium. Assuming further that the QGP is expanding with Bjorken's hydrodynamical expansion, the present model is used to analyze the centrality dependence of the $J/ψ$ suppression in mid-rapidity region and compare it with the data obtained from SPS, …
In the QGP based threshold model \cite{Blaizot:2000ev,Blaizot:1996nq}, in addition to the normal nuclear absorption, $J/ψ$'s are subjected to an 'anomalous' suppression such that above a threshold density $n_{J/ψ}$, all the $J/ψ$'s are melted. In the threshold model we have analysed the recent PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Feedback from decay of the state $χ$ is accounted for. $J/ψ$'s are anomalously suppressed above a threshold density, $n_{J/ψ}=3.57\pm 0.17$ $fm^{-2}$. Threshold density for anomalous suppression of the state $χ$ is…
In 1996, D.H. Rischke and M. Gyulassy proposed to use the time-delay signal in Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) as a signature for the possible formation of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In particular, they suggested to measure the ratio of the transversal interferometry radii, $R_{out}/R_{side}$, which can be obtained by fitting experimental BEC data with a parametrization introduced by G. Bertsch et al. in 1988. The transverse radius parameter $R_{out}$ has compared to the transverse radius parameter $R_{side}$ an additional temporal dependence which should…
We show that all central rapidity hadron yields measured in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV are well described by the chemical non-equilibrium statistical hadronization model (SHM), where the chemically equilibrated QGP source breaks up directly into hadrons. SHM parameters are obtained as a function of centrality of colliding ions, and we compare CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) results. We predict yields of unobserved hadrons and address anti-matter production. The physical properties of the quark--gluon…
We study the thermal dilepton and photon production from relativistic heavy ion collisions in presence of viscosities by employing the recently developed second order dissipative hydrodynamic formulation estimated within a quasiparticle description of thermal QCD (Quantum Chromo-Dynamics) medium. The sensitivity of shear and bulk viscous pressures to the temperature dependence of relaxation time is analyzed within one dimensional boost invariant expansion of quark gluon plasma (QGP).The dissipative corrections to the phase-space distribution functions upto first order in gradients are obtained…
Within the framework of generalized factorization of higher-twist contributions, including modification to splitting functions of both quark and gluon, we get and numerically resolve the medium-modified DGLAP (mDGLAP) evolution equations. With Woods-Saxon nuclear geometry and Hirano 3D ideal hydrodynamic simulations of hot medium, we study the medium modified fragmentation functions (mFF) in DIS and Au+Au collisions in RHIC. Our calculation imply that the parton density in hot medium produced in RHIC is about 30 times larger than cold nucleon.
A recent letter published in the journal Nature reports observation at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation in small asymmetric collision systems denoted as $p$-Au, $d$-Au and $^3$He-Au. The claimed phenomenon, described as `short-lived QGP droplets,' is inferred from a combination of Glauber Monte Carlo simulations, measurement of two azimuth Fourier amplitudes $v_2$ and $v_3$ and hydro theory calculations. While that claim follows a trend in recent years to report `signals' conventionally attributed to QGP as appearing also in smaller collision sys…
We calculate the Gaussian radius parameters of the pion-emitting source in high energy heavy ion collisions, assuming a first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) to a gas of hadrons. Such a model leads to a very long-lived dissipative hadronic rescattering phase which dominates the properties of the two-pion correlation functions. The radii are found to depend only weakly on the thermalization time tau_i, the critical temperature T_c (and thus the latent heat), and the specific entropy of the QGP. The dissipative hadronic stage enforces large variations of the pi…
We have studied the space-time evolution of minimally viscous ($\fracη{s}$=0.08) QGP fluid, undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal motion and arbitrary transverse expansion. Relaxation equations for the shear stress tensor components, derived from the phenomenological Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative relativistic fluid, are solved simultaneously with the energy-momentum conservation equations. Comparison of evolution of ideal and viscous fluid, both initialized under the similar conditions, e.g. same equilibration time, energy density and velocity profile, indicate that in viscous fluid…
We examine the evolution of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) droplets with viscous hydrodynamics and analyze the pion transverse-momentum spectrum, elliptic flow, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry in a granular source model consisting of viscous QGP droplets. The shear viscosity of the QGP droplet speeds up and slows down the droplet evolution in the central and peripheral regions of the droplet, respectively. The effect of the bulk viscosity on the evolution is negligible. Although there are viscous effects on the droplet evolution, the pion momentum spectrum and elliptic flow change littl…
We make predictions for the kaon interferometry measurements in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). A first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) to a gas of hadrons is assumed for the transport calculations. The fraction of kaons that are directly emitted from the phase boundary is considerably enhanced at large transverse momenta K_T ~ 1 GeV/c. In this kinematic region, the sensitivity of the R_out/R_side ratio to the QGP-properties is enlarged. Here, the results of the 1-dimensional correlation analysis are presented. The extracted in…
We discuss recent developments in assessing heavy-quark interaction in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). While induced gluon radiation is expected to be the main energy-loss mechanism for fast-moving quarks, we focus on elastic scattering which prevails toward lower energies, evaluating both perturbative (gluon-exchange) and nonperturbative (resonance formation) interactions in the QGP. The latter are treated within an effective model for D- and B-meson resonances above T_c as motivated by current QCD lattice calculations. Pertinent diffusion and drag constants, following from a Fokker-Planck equa…
We present ECHO-QGP, a numerical code for $(3+1)$-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics designed for the modeling of the space-time evolution of the matter created in high energy nuclear collisions. The code has been built on top of the \emph{Eulerian Conservative High-Order} astrophysical code for general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics [\emph{Del Zanna et al., Astron. Astrophys. 473, 11, 2007}] and here it has been upgraded to handle the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. ECHO-QGP features second-order treatment of causal relativistic viscosity effects in both Minkowskian or Bjor…
We derive the distribution of energy and momentum transmitted from a primary fast parton and its medium-induced bremsstrahlung gluons to a thermalized quark-gluon plasma. Our calculation takes into account the important and thus far neglected effects of quantum interference between the resulting color currents. We use our result to obtain the rate at which energy is absorbed by the medium as a function of time and find that the rate is modified by the quantum interference between the primary parton and secondary gluons. This Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal type interference persists for time scales …
This survey offers an introductory tutorial for students of any age of the currently thriving field of hadrochemistry. We discuss the different chemical potentials, how the hadronic phase space is described and how one evaluates the abundance of hadrons at time of hadronization. We show that a rather accurate description of experimental data arises and we present results of fits to hadron yields at SPS and RHIC. We show that introduction of chemical non-equilibrium originating in a sudden hadronization of a QGP is favored strongly at SPS and is presently also emerging at RHIC. The low chemical…
Using the newly developed hybrid model VISHNU which connects viscous hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade model, we study the differential and integrated elliptic flow v_2 at different centrality bins for 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions and 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. We find that the average Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity eta/s slightly increases from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, a further study assuming different temperature dependencies for (eta/s)_QGP shows that one cannot uniquely constrain the form of (eta/s)_QGP(T…
In a dynamical model of QGP at RHIC we obtain the temporal evolution of strange phase space occupancy at conditions expected to occur in 100+100A GeV nuclear collisions. We show that the sudden QGP break up model developed to describe the SPS experimental results implies dominance of both baryon and antibaryon abundances by the strange baryon and antibaryon yields.
The journal Nature recently published a letter titled "Creating small circular, elliptical, and triangular droplets of quark-gluon plasma" [1]. The basis for that claim is a combination of measured Fourier amplitudes $v_2$ and $v_3$ from collision systems $p$-Au, $d$-Au and $h$-Au (helion $h$ is the nucleus of atom $^3$He), Glauber Monte Carlo estimates of initial-state transverse collision geometries for those systems and hydro Monte Carlo descriptions of the $v_n$ data. Correspondence between hydro $v_n$ trends and data trends is interpreted as confirmation of "collectivity" occurring in the…
