Algebraic systems called the local geodesic loops and their tangent Akivis algebras are considered. Their possible role in theory of gravity is considered. Quantum conditions for the infinitesimal quantum events are proposed.
We consider a quantum test particle in the background of a Newtonian gravitational field in the framework of Cartan's formulation of nonrelativistic spacetimes. We have proposed a novel quantization of a point particle which amounts to introducing its position operators as multiplication with the corresponding Riemann normal coordinates and momentum operators as infinitesimal right translation operators determined by geodesic multiplication of points of the spacetime. We present detailed calculations for the simplest model of a two-dimensional Newtonian spacetime.
We consider particle trajectories in the gravitational field of an impulsive pp-wave. Due to the distributional character of the wave profile one inevitably encounters an ambiguous point value $θ(0)$. We show that this ambiguity may be resolved by imposing covariant constancy of the square of the tangent. Our result is consistent with Colombeau's multiplication of distributions.
In this work, we show that it is possible to study the notion of geodesic deviation equation in $f(T)$ gravity, in spite of the fact that in teleparallel gravity there is no notion of geodesics, and the torsion is responsible for the appearance of gravitational interaction. In this regard, we obtain the GR equivalent equations for $f(T)$ gravity which are in the modified gravity form such as $f(R)$ gravity. Then, we obtain the GDE within the context of this modified gravity. In this way, the obtained geodesic deviation equation will correspond to the $f(T)$ gravity. Eventually, we extend the c…
In this paper we study the geodesic structure of the Schwarzschild black hole in rainbow gravity analyzing the behavior of null and time-like geodesic. We find that the structure of the geodesics essentially does not change when the semi-classical effects are included. However, we can distinguish different scenarios if we take into account the effects of rainbow gravity. Depending on the type of rainbow functions under consideration, inertial and external observers see very different situations in radial and non radial motion of a test particles.
In the present paper we study the Geodesic Deviation Equation (GDE) in the modified $f(Q)$-gravity theories. The formulation of GDE in General Relativity in the case of the homogeneous and isotropic Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime is briefly discussed and then extended in modified $f(Q)$-gravity using its covariant counterpart. The generalised Mattig relation is obtained. Finally, an equivalent expression to the Dyer-Roeder equation in General Relativity in the case of $f(Q)$-gravity is presented.
We write the equation of geodesic deviations in the spacetime of $pp$-waves in terms of the Newman-Penrose scalars and apply it to study gravitational waves in quadratic curvature gravity. We show that quadratic curvature gravity $pp$-waves can have a transverse helicity-0 polarization mode and two transverse helicity-2 general relativity-like wave polarizations. A concrete example is given in which we analyze the wave polarizations of an exact impulsive gravitational wave solution to quadratic curvature gravity.
In the present paper we study the geodesic motion of test particles and light rays in the spacetime of a static charged black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equations in the spacetime of this black hole are presented. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic $\wp$ function and derivatives of Kleinian $σ$ function. With the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials we analyze the geodesic motion and give a list of all possible orbit types. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms o…
In this paper, we study the geodesic motion in the spacetime of a SU(2)-colored (A)dS black hole in conformal gravity, and also we investigate spacetime features, such as light spheres and horizons. Moreover, we derive the analytical solutions for the equation of motion of test particles and light rays using Weierstrass elliptic and Kleinian sigma functions. Depending on the particle energy levels and angular momentums, we classify the solutions of the geodesic equations. Furthermore, several examples of possible types of orbits illustrate the results
Set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in a spherical conformal spacetime is presented. Solutions of this geodesics can be expressed in terms of the Weierstrass {\wp} function and the Kleinian σ function. Using conserved energy and angular momentum we can characterize the different orbits. Also, considering parametric diagrams and effective potentials, we plot some possible orbits. Moreover, with the help of analytical solutions, we investigate the light deflection for such an escape orbit.
We consider the motion of test particles in the spacetime of a black hole in f(R) gravity. The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in the spacetime of this black hole are presented. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions and derivatives of Kleinian sigma functions. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum as well as the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the real constant $β$.
The geodesic deviation equation has been investigated in the framework of $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity, where $T$ denotes the torsion and $\mathcal{T}$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively. The FRW metric is assumed and the geodesic deviation equation has been established following the General Relativity approach in the first hand and secondly, by a direct method using the modified Friedmann equations. Via fundamental observers and null vector fields with FRW background, we have generalized the Raychaudhuri equation and the Mattig relation in $f(T,\mathcal{T})$ gravity. Furth…
In this paper, we investigate the modified Geodesic Deviation Equation (GDE) in the framework of $f(R,T)$ theory of gravity where $R$ and $T$ are the curvature scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively, using the FLRW background. In this way, we obtain the GR equivalent (GDE) in $f(R,T)$ metric formalism. We also extend our work to the generalization of the Matting relation and perform the numerical analysis with GDE for null vector.
In the context of metric $f(R)$ gravity, the Geodesic Deviation Equation (GDE) was first studied in arXiv:1010.5279v3, giving a general expression and studying a particular case, the FLRW universe. In the paper arXiv:1312.2022v1 a similar analysis was made. However, there is a discrepancy in the expressions for the null vector field case due to an algebraic error in our original paper. Here, we make explicit the contribution of the different operators in the GDE, and we correct our previous results.
Recent study has shown that a non-singular oscillating potential, a feature of Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) theories, matches current experimental data better than the standard GR potential. In this work we show that this non-singular oscillating potential can be given by a wider class of theories which allows the defocusing of null rays, and therefore geodesic completeness. We consolidate the conditions whereby null geodesic congruences may be made past-complete, via the Raychaudhuri Equation, with the requirement of a non-singular Newtonian potential in an IDG theory. In so doing, we ex…
We study photon orbits in the background of $(1+3)$-dimensional static, spherically symmetric geometries. In particular, we have obtained exact analytical solutions to the null geodesic equations for light rays in terms of the Weierstraß function for space-times arising in the context of scale-dependent gravity. The trajectories in the $(x-y)$ plane are shown graphically, and we make a comparison with similar geometries arising in different contexts. The light deflection angle is computed as a function of the running parameter $ξ$, and an upper bound for the latter is obtained.
We study photon orbits within (1+2)-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell non-linear electrodynamics assuming a static and circularly symmetric background. An exact analytical solution to the null geodesic equations for light rays is obtained in terms of the Weierstraß function. We investigate in detail the impact of the photon energy, the electric charge of the black hole, and the integration constant (initial condition) on the shape of the orbits.
In this work we review the study of singularities in Poincaré gauge theories of gravity. Since one of the most recent studies uses the appearance of black hole regions of arbitrary dimension as an indicator of singular behaviour, we also give some explicit examples of these structures and study how particles behave around them.
We perform a detailed study of the geodesic equations in the spacetime of the static and rotating charged black hole corresponding to the Kerr-Newman-(A)dS spacetime. We derive the equations of motion for test particles and light rays and present their solutions in terms of the Weierstrass $\wp$, $ζ$ and $σ$ functions as well as the Kleinian $σ$ function. With the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials we analyze the geodesic motion and classify the possible orbit types. This spacetime is also a solution of $f(R)$ gravity with a constant curvature scalar.
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to a crucial sign error in equation which we use from Ref. 7 that is incorrect. In particular, Eq.(1-8) is not the correct equation from the variation of N. See, for example, Eq.(6) in PRD93, 064043 (2016) for phi = 0 case.
We study the existence and stability of circular geodesics in a family of asymptotically AdS static black holes in New Massive Gravity. We show that the existence of such geodesics is determined by the sign of the hair parameter. For a positive hair parameter the stability regions follow the usual pattern, with an innermost unstable null geodesic separated from the horizon, followed by a region of unstable timelike geodesics and then stable timelike geodesics extending in the asymptotic region.
The geodesic deviation equation, describing the relative accelerations of nearby particles, and the Raychaudhury equation, giving the evolution of the kinematical quantities associated with deformations (expansion, shear and rotation) are considered in the framework of modified theories of gravity with an arbitrary curvature-matter coupling, by taking into account the effects of the extra force. As a physical application of the geodesic deviation equation the modifications of the tidal forces due to the supplementary curvature-matter coupling are obtained in the weak field approximation. The t…
Starting from the origin of Einstein general relativity (GR) the request of Mach on the theory's structure has been the core of the foundational debate. That problem is strictly connected with the nature of the mass-energy equivalence. It is well known that this is exactly the key point that Einstein used to realize a metric theory of gravitation having an unequalled beauty and elegance. On the other hand, the current requirements of particle physics and the open questions within extended gravity theories request a better understanding of Equivalence Principle (EP). The MOND theory by Milgrom …
We study the null geodesics in a static circularly symmetric (SCS) black hole spacetime which is a solution in the $(2+1)$-dimensional massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT massive gravity). We obtain analytic solutions for the null geodesic equation in the SCS black hole background and find the explicit form of deflection angles. We see that for various values of the impact parameter, the deflection angle can be positive, negative or even zero in this black hole spacetime. The negative deflection angle indicates the repulsive behavior of the gravity which comes from t…
In a recent paper Abramowicz and Klu{ź}niak have discussed the problem of epicyclic oscillations in Newton's and Einstein's dynamics and have shown that Newton's dynamics in a properly curved three-dimensional space is identical to test-body dynamics in the three-dimensional optical geometry of Schwarzschild space-time. One of the main results of this paper was the proof that different behaviour of radial epicyclic frequency and Keplerian frequency in Newtonian and General Relativistic regimes had purely geometric origin contrary to claims that nonlinearity of Einstein's theory was responsible…
The study of the dynamics of a two-body system in modified gravity constitutes a more complex problem than in Newtonian gravity. Numerical methods are typically needed to solve the equations of geodesics. Despite the complexity of the problem, the study of a two-body system in $f(R)$ gravity leads to a new exciting perspective hinting the right strategy to adopt in order to probe modified gravity. Our results point out some differences between the {\em semiclassical} (Newtonian) approach, and the {\em relativistic} (geodesic) one thus suggesting that the latter represents the best strategy for…
In order to classify and understand the spacetime structure, investigation of the geodesic motion of massive and massless particles is a key tool. So the geodesic equation is a central equation of gravitating systems and the subject of geodesics in the black hole dictionary attracted much attention. In this paper, we give a full description of geodesic motions in three-dimensional spacetime. We investigate the geodesics near charged BTZ black holes and then generalize our prescriptions to the case of massive gravity. We show that electric charge is a critical parameter for categorizing the geo…
The Chern-Simons modification to general relativity in four dimensions consists of adding to the Einstein-Hilbert term a scalar field that couples to the first class Pontryagin density. In this theory, which has attracted considerable attention recently, the Schwarzschild metric persists as an exact solution, and this is why this model resists several observational constraints. In contrast, the spinning black hole solution of the theory is not given by the Kerr metric but by a modification of it, so far only known for slow rotation and small coupling constant. In the present paper, we show tha…
Teleparallel Gravity (TG) describes gravitation as a torsional- rather than curvature-based effect. As in curvature-based constructions of gravity, several different formulations can be proposed, one of which is the Teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR) which is dynamically equivalent to GR. In this work, we explore the evolution of a spatially homogeneous collapsing stellar body in the context of two important modifications to TEGR, namely f (T) gravity which is the TG analogue of f (R) gravity, and a nonminimal coupling with a scalar field which has become popular in TG for it…
In this paper we study the Geodesic Deviation Equation (GDE) in metric f(R) gravity. We start giving a brief introduction of the GDE in General Relativity in the case of the standard cosmology. Next we generalize the GDE for metric f(R) gravity using again the FLRW metric. A generalization of the Mattig relation is also obtained. Finally we give and equivalent expression to the Dyer-Roeder equation in General Relativity in the context of f(R) gravity.
The surface gravity of any Killing horizon, in any spacetime dimension, can be interpreted as a local, two-dimensional expansion rate seen by freely falling observers when they cross the horizon. Any two-dimensional congruence of geodesics invariant under the Killing flow can be used to define this expansion, provided that the observers have unit Killing energy.
A 5-dimensional gravity theory, motivated by the brane world picture, with factorisable metric and with Kaluza scalar $G_{55}(r)$, is shown to give rise to a positive contribution to the Raychaudhuri equation. This inhibits the focusing of geodesics and possibly cause non-focusing of the geodesics. This feature is translated into the situation in which the universe has an infinite age and hence no beginning avoiding the big bang singularity.
The Geodesic Deviation Equation is being studied in Brans-Dicke-Rastall gravity. We briefly discuss the Brans-Dicke-Rastall gravity and then construct GDE for FLRW metric. In this way, the obtained geodesic deviation equation will correspond to the Brans-Dicke-Rastall gravity. Eventually, we solve numerically the null vector GDE to obtain from Mattig relation, the deviation vector $η(z)$ and observer area distance $r_0(z)$ and compare the results with $Λ$CDM model.
We investigate the dynamics of a neutral and a charged particle around a black hole in modified gravity immersed in magnetic field. Our focus is on the scalar-tensor-vector theory as modified gravity. We are interested to explore the conditions on the energy of the particle under which it can escape to infinity after collision with another neutral particle in the vicinity of the black hole. We calculate escape velocity of particle orbiting in the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) after the collision. We study the effects of modified gravity on the dynamics of particles. Further we discuss…
We study the issue of length renormalization in the context of fully covariant gravity theories as well as non-relativistic ones such as Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The difference of their symmetry groups implies a relation between the lengths of paths in spacetime in the two types of theory. Provided that certain asymptotic conditions hold, this relation allows us to transfer analytic criteria for the standard spacetime length to be finite to the Perelman length to be likewise finite, and therefore formulate conditions for geodesic incompleteness in partially covariant theories. We also discuss …
The formalism for describing a metric and the corresponding scalar in terms of multipole moments has recently been developed for scalar-tensor theories. We take advantage of this formalism in order to obtain expressions for the observables that characterise geodesics in terms of the moments. These expressions provide some insight into how the structure of a scalarized compact object affects observables. They can also be used to understand how deviations from general relativity are imprinted on the observables.
We study the derivation of the effective equation of motion for a pointlike particle in the framework of quantum gravity. Just like the geodesic motion of a classical particle is a consequence of classical field theory coupled to general relativity, we introduce the similar notion of an effective equation of motion, but starting from an abstract quantum gravity description. In the presence of entanglement between gravity and matter, quantum effects give rise to modifications of the geodesic trajectory, primarily as a consequence of the nonzero overlap between various coherent states of the gra…
A four-force parallel to the trajectory of a massive particle can always be eliminated by going to an affine parametrization, but the affine parameter is different from the proper time. The main application is to cosmology, in which elements of the cosmic fluid are subject to a pressure gradient parallel to their four-velocities. Natural implementations of parallel four-forces occur when the particle mass changes and in scalar-tensor cosmology.
In this work, we construct a non-commutative (NC) gauge theory of gravity for any metric with spherical symmetries, where we use a non-diagonal tetrad field. The deformed gauge potentials (tetrad fields) and the components of deformed metric are computed to the second order in the NC parameter $Θ^{μν}$, as the application to the Schwarzschild black hole we show that the NC geometry removes the singularity at the origin of the black hole, and increase the event horizon. The non-commutativity correction to the effective potential of the Schwarzschild metric is also computed and we show how this …
In this paper we analyze the Kerr geometry in the context of Conformal Gravity, an alternative theory of gravitation, which is a direct extension of General Relativity. Following previous studies in the literature, we introduce an explicit expression of the Kerr metric in Conformal Gravity, which naturally reduces to the standard General Relativity Kerr geometry in the absence of Conformal Gravity effects. As in the standard case, we show that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation governing geodesic motion in a space-time based on this geometry is indeed separable and that a fourth constant of motion-s…
According to General Relativity, as distinct from Newtonian gravity, motion under gravity is treated by a theory that deals, initially, only with test particles. At the same time, satellite measurements deal with extended bodies. We discuss the correspondence between geodesic motion in General Relativity and the motion of an extended body by means of the Ehlers-Geroch theorem, and in the context of the recently launched LAser RElativity Satellite (LARES). Being possibly the highest mean density orbiting body in the Solar system, this satellite provides the best realization of a test particle e…
A possible model for quantum kinematics of a test particle in a curved space-time is proposed. Every reasonable neighbourhood V_e of a curved space-time can be equipped with a nonassociative binary operation called the geodesic multiplication of space-time points. In the case of the Minkowski space-time, left and right translations of the geodesic multiplication coincide and amount to a rigid shift of the space-time x->x+a. In a curved space-time infinitesimal geodesic right translations can be used to define the (geodesic) momentum operators. The commutation relations of position and momentum…
Equations of non-geodesic and non-geodesic deviations for different particles are obtained, using a specific type of classes of the Bazanski Lagrangian. Such type of paths has been found to describe the problem of variable mass in the presence of Riemannian geometry. This may give rise to detect the effect of dark matter which reveals the mystery of motion of celestial objects that are not responding neither to Newtonian nor Einsteinian gravity. An important link between non-geodesic equations and the dipolar particle or fluids has been introduced to apply the concept of geometization of physi…
In order to study the quantum geometry of random surfaces in Liouville gravity, we propose a definition of geodesic distance associated to a Gaussian free field on a regular lattice. This geodesic distance is used to numerically determine the Hausdorff dimension associated to shortest cycles of 2d quantum gravity on the torus coupled to conformal matter fields, showing agreement with a conjectured formula by Y. Watabiki. Finally, the numerical tools are put to test by quantitatively comparing the distribution of lengths of shortest cycles to the corresponding distribution in large random trian…
A gravitational field model based on two symmetric tensors, $g_{μν}$ and $\tilde{g}_{μν}$, is presented. In this model, new matter fields are added to the original matter fields, motivated by an additional symmetry ($\tildeδ$ symmetry). We call them $\tildeδ$ matter fields. We find that massive particles do not follow geodesics, while trajectories of massless particles are null geodesics of an effective metric. Then we study the Cosmological case, where we get an accelerated expansion of the Universe without dark energy.

The time-like and null-like geodesics around compact objects are some of the best tools to classify and understand the structure of a space-time. In this paper, we study the null geodesics around charged static dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The physical parameters for non-radial geodesics including the effective potential, effective force, radius of the photon sphere and impact parameter are obtained and effects of the charge parameter and dilaton coupling constant on these quantities are studied. Possible photon motions for different values of the impact parameter a…
We consider alternative theories of gravity with a direct coupling between matter and the Ricci scalar We study the relation between these theories and ordinary scalar-tensor gravity, or scalar-tensor theories which include non-standard couplings between the scalar and matter. We then analyze the motion of matter in such theories, its implications for the Equivalence Principle, and the recent claim that they can alleviate the dark matter problem in galaxies.
General Relativity (GR) is shown to be a complete theory with respect to the isochrony of the pendulum. This guarantees that time can be measured with a mechanical clock within the theory itself as a matter of principle. The proper and coordinate oscillation frequencies of a simple pendulum are computed as a function of 3 coordinate parameters: the distance of the fulcrum to the gravity source, its length and the Schwarzschild radius. Novel GR effects appear in the Schwarzschild coordinates as divergences, zeroes and other instabilities of the oscillation frequencies that are absent in Newtoni…
In general relativity, astrophysical black holes are simple objects, being described by just their mass and spin. These simple solutions are not exclusive to general relativity, as they also appear in theories that allow for an extra scalar degree of freedom. Recently, it was shown that some theories which couple a scalar field with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can have the same classic general relativity black hole solutions as well as hairy black holes. These scalarized solutions can be stable, having an additional "charge" term that has an impact on the gravitational-wave emission by black ho…
