Generic classically integrable boundary conditions for the $A_{n}^{(1)}$ affine Toda field theories (ATFT) are investigated. The present analysis rests primarily on the underlying algebra, defined by the classical version of the reflection equation. We use as a prototype example the first non-trivial model of the hierarchy i.e. the $A_2^{(1)}$ ATFT, however our results may be generalized for any $A_{n}^{(1)}$ ($n>1$). We assume here two distinct types of boundary conditions called some times soliton preserving (SP), and soliton non-preserving (SNP) associated to two distinct algebras, i.e. the reflection algebra and the ($q$) twisted Yangian respectively. The boundary local integrals of motion are then systematically extracted from the asymptotic expansion of the associated transfer matrix. In the case of SNP boundary conditions we recover previously known results. The other type of boundary conditions (SP), associated to the reflection algebra, are novel in this context and lead to a different set of conserved quantities that depend on free boundary parameters. It also turns out that the number of local integrals of motion for SP boundary conditions is `double' compared to those of the SNP case.
We present a systematic and detailed review of the application of the method of Hirota and the rational dressing method to abelian Toda systems associated with the untwisted loop groups of complex general linear groups. Emphasizing the rational dressing method, we compare the soliton solutions constructed within these two approaches, and show that the solutions obtained by the Hirota's method are a subset of those obtained by the rational dressing method.
Application of our algebraic approach to Liouville integrable defects is proposed for the sine-Gordon model. Integrability of the model is ensured by the underlying classical r-matrix algebra. The first local integrals of motion are identified together with the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions imposed on the time components of the entailed Lax pairs give rise to the sewing conditions on the defect point consistent with Liouville integrability.

A generalized Toda Lattice equation is considered. The associated linear problem (Lax representation) is found. For simple case N=3 the $τ$-function Hirota form is presented that allows to construct an exast solutions of the equations of the 1DGTL. The corresponding hierarchy and its relations with the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and Hersenberg ferromagnetic equation are discussed.
In these notes we study the duality between sigma-models and Toda QFT's. We claim that $\mathfrak{gl}(n|n)$ affine Toda field theory behaves in the strong coupling limit as $η-$deformed $\mathbb{CP}(n-1)$ sigma-model plus a free field.
The negative symmetry flows are incorporated into the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the homogeneous $A_m$-hierarchy and its $\hat{gl} (m+1, C)$ extension. A loop group automorphism of order two is used to define a sub-hierarchy of $\hat{gl} (m+1, C)$ hierarchy containing only the odd symmetry flows. The positive and negative flows of the $\pm 1$ grade coincide with equations of the multidimensional Toda model and of topological-anti-topological fusion.
Transmission matrices for two types of integrable defect are calculated explicitly, first by solving directly the nonlinear transmission Yang-Baxter equations, and second by solving a linear intertwining relation between a finite dimensional representation of the relevant Borel subalgebra of the quantum group underpinning the integrable quantum field theory and a particular infinite dimensional representation expressed in terms of sets of generalized `quantum' annihilation and creation operators. The principal examples analysed are based on the $a_2^{(2)}$ and $a_n^{(1)}$ affine Toda models bu…
The five integrable vortex equations, recently studied by Manton, are generalized to include magnetic impurities of the Tong-Wong type. Under certain conditions these generalizations remain integrable. We further set up a gauge theory with a product gauge group, two complex scalar fields and a general charge matrix. The second species of vortices, when frozen, are interpreted as the magnetic impurity for all five vortex equations. We then give a geometric compatibility condition, which enables us to remove the constant term in all the equations. This is similar to the reduction from the Taubes…
The 2D Toda hierarchy occupies a central position in the family of integrable hierarchies of the Toda type. The 1D Toda hierarchy and the Ablowitz-Ladik (aka relativistic Toda) hierarchy can be derived from the 2D Toda hierarchy as reductions. These integrable hierarchies have been applied to various problems of mathematics and mathematical physics since 1990s. A recent example is a series of studies on models of statistical mechanics called the melting crystal model. This research has revealed that the aforementioned two reductions of the 2D Toda hierarchy underlie two different melting cryst…
We build in this paper the algebra of q-deformed pseudo-differential operators shown to be an essential step towards setting a q-deformed integrability program. In fact, using the results of this q-deformed algebra, we derive the q-analogues of the generalized KdV hierarchy. We focus in particular on the first leading orders of this q-deformed hierarchy namely the q-KdV and q-Boussinesq integrable systems. We present also the q-generalization of the conformal transformations of the currents and discuss the primarity condition of the fields by using the Volterra gauge group transformations for …
We present a new realization of scalar integrable hierarchies in terms of the Toda lattice hierarchy. In other words, we show on a large number of examples that an integrable hierarchy, defined by a pseudodifferential Lax operator, can be embedded in the Toda lattice hierarchy. Such a realization in terms the Toda lattice hierarchy seems to be as general as the Drinfeld--Sokolov realization.
We show here that matrix Darboux-Toda transformation can be written as a product of a number of mappings. Each of these mappings is a symmetry of the matrix nonlinear Shrodinger system of integro-differential equations. We thus introduce a completely new type of discrete transformations for this system. The discrete symmetry of the vector nonlinear Shrodinger system is a particular realization of these mappings.
We review the separation of variables for the Kowalevski top and for its generalization to the algebra o(4). We notice that the corresponding separation equations allow an interpretation of the Kowalevski top as a B2 integrable lattice. Consequently, we apply the quadratic r-matrix formalism to construct a new 2x2 Lax matrix for the top, which is responsible for its separation of variables.
This paper mainly talks about the Cauchy two-matrix model and its corresponding integrable hi- erarchy with the help of orthogonal polynomials theory and Toda-type equations. Starting from the symmetric reduction of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials, we derive the Toda equation of CKP type (or the C-Toda lattice) as well as its Lax pair by introducing time flows. Then, matrix integral solutions to the C-Toda lattice are extended to give solutions to the CKP hierarchy which reveals the time-dependent partition function of the Cauchy two-matrix model is nothing but the τ-function of the CKP hiearc…
Recent work of Foda and his group on a connection between classical integrable hierarchies (the KP and 2D Toda hierarchies) and some quantum integrable systems (the 6-vertex model with DWBC, the finite XXZ chain of spin 1/2, the phase model on a finite chain, etc.) is reviewed. Some additional information on this issue is also presented.
We give a simple proof that the Neumann coefficients of surface states in Witten's SFT satisfy the Hirota equations for dispersionless KP hierarchy. In a similar way we show that the Neumann coefficients for the three string vertex in the same theory obey the Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda Lattice hierarchy. We conjecture that the full (dispersive) Toda Lattice hierachy and, even more attractively a two--matrix model, may underlie open SFT.
We propose several different types of construction principles for new classes of Toda field theories based on root systems defined on Lorentzian lattices. In analogy to conformal and affine Toda theories based on root systems of semi-simple Lie algebras, also their Lorentzian extensions come about in conformal and massive variants. We carry out the Painlevé integrability test for the proposed theories, finding in general only one integer valued resonance corresponding to the energy-momentum tensor. Thus most of the Lorentzian Toda field theories are not integrable, as the remaining resonances,…
Integrable discretisations for a class of coupled (super) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) type of equations are presented. The class corresponds to a Lax operator with entries in a Grassmann algebra. Elementary Darboux transformations are constructed. As a result, Grassmann generalisations of the Toda lattice and the NLS dressing chain are obtained. The compatibility (Bianchi commutativity) of these Darboux transformations leads to integrable Grassmann generalisations of the difference Toda and NLS equations. The resulting systems will have discrete Lax representations provided by the set of two c…
A cross between two well-known integrable multi-particle dynamics, an affine Toda molecule and a Sutherland system, is introduced for any affine root system. Though it is not completely integrable but partially integrable, or quasi exactly solvable, it inherits many remarkable properties from the parents. The equilibrium position is algebraic, i.e. proportional to the Weyl vector. The frequencies of small oscillations near equilibrium are proportional to the affine Toda masses, which are essential ingredients of the exact factorisable S-matrices of affine Toda field theories. Some lower lying …
In this paper the relation between the cluster integrable systems and $q$-difference equations is extended beyond the Painlevé case. We consider the class of hyperelliptic curves when the Newton polygons contain only four boundary points. The corresponding cluster integrable Toda systems are presented, and their discrete automorphisms are identified with certain reductions of the Hirota difference equation. We also construct non-autonomous versions of these equations and find that their solutions are expressed in terms of 5d Nekrasov functions with the Chern-Simons contributions, while in the …
A new class of integrable two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories, in which scalar matter fields satisfy the Toda equations, is proposed. The simplest case of the Toda system is considered in some detail, and on this example we outline how the general solution can be obtained. Then we demonstrate how the wave-like solutions of the general Toda systems can be simply derived. In the dilaton gravity theory this solutions describe nonlinear waves coupled to gravity. A special attention is paid to making the analytic structure of the solutions of the Toda equations as simple and transparent as pos…
Basic notions regarding classical integrable systems are reviewed. An algebraic description of the classical integrable models together with the zero curvature condition description is presented. The classical r-matrix approach for discrete and continuum classical integrable models is introduced. Using this framework the associated classical integrals of motion and the corresponding Lax pair are extracted based on algebraic considerations. Our attention is restricted to classical discrete and continuum integrable systems with periodic boundary conditions. Typical examples of discrete (Toda cha…
The new class of integrable mappings and chains is introduced. Corresponding (1+2) integrable systems invariant with respect to such discrete transformations are represented in explicit form. Soliton like solutions of them are represented in terms of matrix elements of fundamental representations of semisimple A_n algebras for a given group element.
In the present paper we obtain some integrable generalisations of the continuous Toda system generated by a flat connection form taking values in higher grading subspaces of the algebra of the area--preserving diffeomorphism of the torus $T^2$, and construct their general solutions. The grading condition which we use here, imposed on the connection, can be realised in terms of some holomorphic distributions on the corresponding homogeneous spaces.
In this paper we study the Yang-Baxter integrable structure of Conformal Field Theories with extended conformal symmetry generated by the W_3 algebra. We explicitly construct various T- and Q-operators which act in the irreducible highest weight modules of the W_3 algebra. These operators can be viewed as continuous field theory analogues of the commuting transfer matrices and Q-matrices of the integrable lattice systems associated with the quantum algebra U_q(\hat{sl}(3)). We formulate several conjectures detailing certain analytic characteristics of the Q-operators and propose exact asymptot…
A pedagogical presentation of integrable models with special reference to the Toda lattice hierarchy has been attempted. The example of the KdV equation has been studied in detail, beginning with the infinite conserved quantities and going on to the Lax formalism for the same. We then go on to symplectic manifolds for which we construct the Lax operator. This formalism is applied to Toda Lattice systems. The Zakharov Shabat formalism aimed at encompassing all integrable models is also covered after which the zero curvature condition and its fallout are discussed. We then take up Toda Field The…
Boundary conditions compatible with classical integrability are studied both directly, using an approach based on the explicit construction of conserved quantities, and indirectly by first developing a generalisation of the Lax pair idea. The latter approach is closer to the spirit of earlier work by Sklyanin and yields a complete set of conjectures for permissible boundary conditions for any affine Toda field theory.
It was known that one-point functions in the ABJM matrix model (obtained by applying the localization technique to one-point functions of the half-BPS Wilson loop operator in the ABJM theory) satisfy the Jacobi-Trudi formula, which strongly indicates the integrable structure of the system. In this paper, we identify the integrable structure of two-point functions in the ABJM matrix model as the two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy. The identification implies infinitely many non-linear differential equations for the generating function of the two-point functions.
We show in full generality that time-correlation function of a physical observable analytically continued to imaginary time is a tau-function of integrable Toda hierarchy. Using this relation we show that the singularity along the imaginary axis, which is a generic behavior for quantum non-integrable many-body system, is due to delocalization in Krylov space.
The non-conformal analog of abelian T-duality transformations relating pairs of axial and vector integrable models from the non abelian affine Toda family is constructed and studied in detail.
We discuss some algebraic aspects of the integrable vector non-linear Schrödinger hierarchies (GNLS$_{r}$). These are hierarchies of zero-curvature equations constructed from affine Kac-Moody algebras $\hat{sl}_{r+1}$. Using the dressing transformation method and the tau-function formalism, we construct the N-soliton solutions of the GNLS$_{r}$ systems. The explicit matrix elements in the case of GNLS$_{1}$ are computed using level one vertex operator representations.
A Toda equation is specified by a choice of a Lie group and a $\mathbb Z$-gradation of its Lie algebra. The Toda equations associated with loop groups of complex classical Lie groups, whose Lie algebras are endowed with integrable $\mathbb Z$-gradations with finite dimensional grading subspaces, are described in an explicit form.
Toda equations associated with twisted loop groups are considered. Such equations are specified by Z-gradations of the corresponding twisted loop Lie algebras. The classification of Toda equations related to twisted loop Lie algebras with integrable Z-gradations is discussed.
A tau function of the 2D Toda hierarchy can be obtained from a generating function of the two-partition cubic Hodge integrals. The associated Lax operators turn out to satisfy an algebraic relation. This algebraic relation can be used to identify a reduced system of the 2D Toda hierarchy that emerges when the parameter $τ$ of the cubic Hodge integrals takes a special value. Integrable hierarchies of the Volterra type are shown to be such reduced systems. They can be derived for positive rational values of $τ$. In particular, the discrete series $τ= 1,2,\ldots$ correspond to the Volterra lattic…
The prepotential of the effective N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory perturbed in the ultraviolet by the descendents of the single-trace chiral operators is shown to be a particular tau-function of the quasiclassical Toda hierarchy. In the case of noncommutative U(1) theory (or U(N) theory with 2N-2 fundamental hypermultiplets at the appropriate locus of the moduli space of vacua) or a theory on a single fractional D3 brane at the ADE singularity the hierarchy is the dispersionless Toda chain. We present its explicit solutions. Our results generalize the limit shape analysis of Logan-Schepp and Versh…
In this paper, we have studied the kink and antikink solutions in several neutral scalar models in 1+1 dimension. We follow the standard approach to write down the leading order and the second order force between long distance separated kink and antikink. The leading order force is proportional to exponential decay with respect to the distance between the two nearest kinks or antikinks. The second order force have a similar behavior with the larger decay factor, namely $3\over 2$. We make use of these properties to construct the kink lattice. The dynamics of the kink lattice with leading order…
A new integrable class of quantum models representing a family of different discrete-time or relativistic generalisations of the periodic Toda chain (TC), including that of a recently proposed classical close to TC model [7] is presented. All such models are shown to be obtainable from a single ancestor model at different realisations of the underlying quantised algebra. As a consequence the $(2\times 2)$ Lax operators and the associated quantum $R$-matrices for these models are easily derived ensuring their quantum integrability. It is shown that the functional Bethe ansatz developed for the …
The affine Toda field theory is studied as a 2+1-dimensional system. The third dimension appears as the discrete space dimension, corresponding to the simple roots in the $A_N$ affine root system, enumerated according to the cyclic order on the $A_N$ affine Dynkin diagram. We show that there exists a natural discretization of the affine Toda theory, where the equations of motion are invariant with respect to permutations of all discrete coordinates. The discrete evolution operator is constructed explicitly. The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz of the affine Toda system is studied in the limit $L,N\t…
We consider deformations of the $SU(3)$ Affine Toda theory (AT) and investigate the integrability properties of the deformed theories. We find that for some special deformations all conserved quantities change to being conserved only asymptotically, {\it i.e.} in the process of the scattering of two solitons these charges do vary in time, but they return, after the scattering, to the values they had prior to the scattering. This phenomenon, which we have called quasi-integrability, is related to special properties of the two-soliton solutions under space-time parity transformations. Some prope…
We study the two-dimensional supersymmetric Toda theory based on the Lie superalgebra $B(1,1) \equiv Osp(3|2)$ and construct its quantum W-currents. We also investigate the fermionic affinization of this model: we show that despite the non-unitary form of the Lagrangian the $B^{(1)}(1,1)$ theory has a real particle mass spectrum which is not renormalized at one-loop. We construct the first higher--spin conserved current, prove its conservation to all-loop order, compute one-loop corrections to the corresponding charge and check consistency between charge and mass renormalization.
This paper explores integrable structures of a generalized melting crystal model that has two $q$-parameters $q_1,q_2$. This model, like the ordinary one with a single $q$-parameter, is formulated as a model of random plane partitions (or, equivalently, random 3D Young diagrams). The Boltzmann weight contains an infinite number of external potentials that depend on the shape of the diagonal slice of plane partitions. The partition function is thereby a function of an infinite number of coupling constants $t_1,t_2,...$ and an extra one $Q$. There is a compact expression of this partition functi…
We calculate normalization factors and reflection amplitudes in the W-invariant conformal quantum field theories. Using these CFT data we derive vacuum expectation values of exponential fields in affine Toda theories and related perturbed conformal field theories. We apply these results to evaluate explicitly the expectation values of order parameters in the field theories associated with statistical systems, like XY, Z_n-Ising and Ashkin-Teller models. The same results are used for the calculation of the asymptotics of cylindrically symmetric solutions of the classical Toda equations which ap…
Analogues of the KP and the Toda lattice hierarchy called dispersionless KP and Toda hierarchy are studied. Dressing operations in the dispersionless hierarchies are introduced as a canonical transformation, quantization of which is dressing operators of the ordinary KP and Toda hierarchy. An alternative construction of general solutions of the ordinary KP and Toda hierarchy is given as twistor construction which is quatization of the similar construction of solutions of dispersionless hierarchies. These results as well as those obtained in previous papers are presented with proofs and necessa…
General properties of a class of two-dimensional dilaton gravity (DG) theories with multi-exponential potentials are studied and a subclass of these theories, in which the equations of motion reduce to Toda and Liouville equations, is treated in detail. A combination of parameters of the equations should satisfy a certain constraint that is identified and solved for the general multi-exponential model. From the constraint it follows that in DG theories the integrable Toda equations, generally, cannot appear without accompanying Liouville equations. We also show how the wave-like solutions of t…
Generalizations of the q-Onsager algebra are introduced and studied. In one of the simplest case and q=1, the algebra reduces to the one proposed by Uglov-Ivanov. In the general case and $q\neq 1$, an explicit algebra homomorphism associated with coideal subalgebras of quantum affine Lie algebras (simply and non-simply laced) is exhibited. Boundary (soliton non-preserving) integrable quantum Toda field theories are then considered in light of these results. For the first time, all defining relations for the underlying non-Abelian symmetry algebra are explicitely obtained. As a consequence, bas…
A general construction of affine Non Abelian (NA) - Toda models in terms of axial and vector gauged two loop WZNW model is discussed. They represent {\it integrable perturbations} of the conformal $σ$-models (with tachyons included) describing (charged) black hole type string backgrounds. We study the {\it off-critical} T-duality between certain families of axial and vector type of integrable models for the case of affine NA- Toda theories with one global U(1) symmetry. In particular we find the Lie algebraic condition defining a subclass of {\it T-selfdual} torsionless NA Toda models and thei…
We study integrable lattice regularizations of the sine-Gordon model with the help of the separation of variables method of Sklyanin and the Baxter Q-operators. This leads us to the complete characterization of the spectrum (eigenvalues and eigenstates), in terms of the solutions to the Bethe ansatz equations. The completeness of the set of states that can be constructed from the solutions to the Bethe ansatz equations is proven by our approach.
The general properties of a class of two-dimensional dilaton gravity (DG) theories with multi-exponential potentials are studied and a subclass of these theories, in which the equations of motion reduce to Toda and Liouville equations, is treated in detail. A combination of parameters of the equations should satisfy a certain constraint that is identified and solved for the general model. It follows that in DG the integrable Toda equations, generally, cannot appear without accompanying Liouville equations. The most difficult problem in the two-dimensional Toda-Liouville DG is to solve the ener…
For a class of generalized integrable hierarchies associated with affine (twisted or untwisted) Kac-Moody algebras, an explicit representation of their local conserved densities by means of a single scalar tau-function is deduced. This tau-function acts as a partition function for the conserved densities, which fits its potential interpretation as the effective action of some quantum system. The class consists of multi-component generalizations of the Drinfel'd-Sokolov and the two-dimensional affine Toda lattice hierarchies. The relationship between the former and the approach of Feigin, Frenk…
We discuss the origin of the associativity (WDVV) equations in the context of quasiclassical or Whitham hierarchies. The associativity equations are shown to be encoded in the dispersionless limit of the Hirota equations for KP and Toda hierarchies. We show, therefore, that any tau-function of dispersionless KP or Toda hierarchy provides a solution to associativity equations. In general, they depend on infinitely many variables. We also discuss the particular solution to the dispersionless Toda hierarchy that describes conformal mappings and construct a family of new solutions to the WDVV equa…
Calogero-Moser models and Toda models are well-known integrable multi-particle dynamical systems based on root systems associated with Lie algebras. The relation between these two types of integrable models is investigated at the levels of the Hamiltonians and the Lax pairs. The Lax pairs of Calogero-Moser models are specified by the representations of the reflection groups, which are not the same as those of the corresponding Lie algebras. The latter specify the Lax pairs of Toda models. The Hamiltonians of the elliptic Calogero-Moser models tend to those of Toda models as one of the periods …
The $n\to\infty$ continuum limit of super-Toda models associated with the affine $sl(2n|2n)^{(1)}$ (super)algebra series produces $(2+1)$-dimensional integrable equations in the ${\bf S}^{1}\times {\bf R}^2$ spacetimes. The equations of motion of the (super)Toda hierarchies depend not only on the chosen (super)algebras but also on the specific presentation of their Cartan matrices. Four distinct series of integrable hierarchies in relation with symmetric-versus-antisymmetric, null-versus-nonnull presentations of the corresponding Cartan matrices are investigated. In the continuum limit we deri…
We give a new integrable boundary condition in affine Toda theory which is soliton-preserving in the sense that a soliton hitting the boundary is reflected as a soliton. All previously known integrable boundary conditions forced a soliton to be converted into an antisoliton upon reflection. We prove integrability of our boundary condition using a generalization of Sklyanin's formalism.
The general solution of the two-dimensional integrable generalization of the f-Toda chain with fixed ends is explicitly presented in terms of matrix elements of various fundamental representations of the SL(n|n-1) supergroup. The dominant role of the representation theory of graded Lie algebras in the problem of constructing integrable mappings and lattices is demonstrated.
Type II integrable defects with more than one degree of freedom at the defect are investigated. A condition on the form of the Lagrangian for such defects is found which ensures the existence of a conserved momentum in the presence of the defect. In addition it is shown that for any Lagrangian satisfying this condition, the defect equations of motion, when taken to hold everywhere, can be extended to give a Bäcklund transformation between the bulk theories on either side of the defect. This strongly suggests that such systems are integrable. Momentum conserving defects and Bäcklund transformat…
The present paper studies a completely integrable conformally invariant model in 1+1 dimensions that corresponds to string propagation on the two-dimensional black hole background (semi-ininite cigar). Besides the two space-time string fields there is a third (internal) field with a very specific Liouville-type interaction leading to the complete integrability. This system is known as non-abelian Toda theory. I give the general explicit classical solution. It realizes a rather involved transformation expressing the interacting string fields in terms of (three) functions $φ_j(u)$ and $\barφ_j(v…
We find explicit (multisoliton) solutions for nonabelian integrable systems such as periodic Toda field equations, Langmuir equations, and Schrodinger equations for functions with values in any associative algebra. The solution for nonabelian Toda field equations for root systems of types A, B, C was expressed by the authors in a previous paper (q-alg/9701008) using quasideterminants introduced by the last two authors. To find multisoliton solutions of periodic Toda equations and other nonabelian systems we use a combination of these ideas with important lemmas which are due to Marchenko.
In this paper we study a suitable limit of integrable QFT with the aim to identify continuous non-relativistic integrable models with local interactions. This limit amounts to sending to infinity the speed of light c but simultaneously adjusting the coupling constant g of the quantum field theories in such a way to keep finite the energies of the various excitations. The QFT considered here are Toda Field Theories and the O(N) non-linear sigma model. In both cases the resulting non-relativistic integrable models consist only of Lieb-Liniger models, which are fully decoupled for the Toda theori…
