The general properties of a class of two-dimensional dilaton gravity (DG) theories with multi-exponential potentials are studied and a subclass of these theories, in which the equations of motion reduce to Toda and Liouville equations, is treated in detail. A combination of parameters of the equations should satisfy a certain constraint that is identified and solved for the general model. It follows that in DG the integrable Toda equations, generally, cannot appear without accompanying Liouville equations.
The most difficult problem in the two-dimensional Toda-Liouville DG is to solve the energy-momentum constraints. We discuss this problem using the simplest examples and identify the main obstacles to finding its analytic solution. Then we consider a subclass of integrable two-dimensional theories, in which scalar matter satisfy the Toda equations while the two-dimensional metric is trivial.
We also show how the wave-like solutions of the general Toda-Liouville systems can be simply derived. In DG, these solutions describe nonlinear waves coupled to gravity as well as static states and cosmologies. For the static states and cosmologies we propose and study a more general one-dimensional Toda-Liouville model typically emerging in one-dimensional reductions of higher-dimensional gravity and supergravity theories. A special attention is paid to making the analytic structure of the solutions of the Toda equations as simple and transparent as possible, with the aim to gain a better understanding of realistic theories reduced to dimensions 1+1 and 1+0 or 0+1.
We study 1+1 dimensional dilaton gravity models which take into account backreaction of the sinh-Gordon matter field. We found a wide class of exact solutions which generalizes black hole solutions of the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity model and its hyperbolic deformation.
We investigate nonperturbative dilatonic solutions of the wide class of the modified gravity models including the Gauss-Bonnet terms with a general $F(G)$ Lagrangian. We show that presence of the Liouville-like solutions is a characteristic feature of these models.
We present an interesting reformulation of a collection of dilaton gravity models in two space-time dimensions into a field theory of two decoupled Liouville fields in flat space, in the presence of a Maxwell gauge field. An effective action is also obtained, encoding the dynamics of the dilaton field and the single gravitational degree of freedom in a decoupled regime. This effective action represents an interesting starting point for future work, including the canonical quantization of these classes of non trivial models of gravity coupled matter systems.
We construct some classes of electrically charged, static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions of the four-dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld-dilaton gravity in the absence and presence of Liouville-type potential for the dilaton field and investigate their properties. These solutions are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter. We show that in the presence of the Liouville-type potential, there exist two classes of solutions. We also compute temperature, entropy, charge and mass of the black hole solutions, and find that these quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamic…

We reconsider dyonic p-brane solutions derivable from Liouville and Toda integrable systems and investigate their geometric structure. It is shown that the non-BPS non-black dyonic branes are not regular on the horizon.
We show that the central charge of the Liouville and ADE Toda theories can be reproduced by equivariantly integrating the anomaly eight-form of the corresponding six-dimensional N=(0,2) theories, which describe the low-energy dynamics of M5-branes.
A new class of integrable two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories, in which scalar matter fields satisfy the Toda equations, is proposed. The simplest case of the Toda system is considered in some detail, and on this example we outline how the general solution can be obtained. Then we demonstrate how the wave-like solutions of the general Toda systems can be simply derived. In the dilaton gravity theory this solutions describe nonlinear waves coupled to gravity. A special attention is paid to making the analytic structure of the solutions of the Toda equations as simple and transparent as pos…
Quantum theory of dilaton gravity is studied in $2+ε$ dimensions. Divergences are computed and renormalized at one-loop order. The mixing between the Liouville field and the dilaton field eliminates $1/ε$ singularity in the Liouville-dilaton propagator. This smooth behavior of the dilaton gravity theory in the $ε\rightarrow 0$ limit solves the oversubtraction problem which afflicted the higher orders of the Einstein gravity in $2+ε$ dimensions. As a nontrivial fixed point, we find a dilaton gravity action which can be transformed to a CGHS type action.
Invariance under non-linear ${\sf {\hat W}}_{\infty}$ algebra is shown for the two-boson Liouville type of model and its algebraic generalizations, the extended conformal Toda models. The realization of the corresponding generators in terms of two boson currents within KP hierarchy is presented.
We consider Yang-Mills theory with the coupling constant and theta angle determined by the vacuum expectation values of a dynamical (complex) dilaton field. We discuss the tree-level N-gluon MHV scattering amplitudes in the presence of a nontrivial background dilaton field and construct the corresponding celestial amplitudes by taking Mellin transforms with respect to the lightcone energies. In this way, we obtain two-dimensional CFT correlators of primary fields on the celestial sphere. We show that the celestial Yang-Mills amplitudes evaluated in the presence of a spherical dilaton shockwave…
We derive the global properties of static spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in the presence of an arbitrary exponential dilaton potential. We show that -- with the exception of a pure cosmological constant `potential' -- no asymptotically flat, asymptotically de Sitter or asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions exist in these models.
We study the general form of the equations for isotropic single-scalar, multi-scalar and dyonic $p$-branes in superstring theory and M-theory, and show that they can be cast into the form of Liouville, Toda (or Toda-like) equations. The general solutions describe non-extremal isotropic $p$-branes, reducing to the previously-known extremal solutions in limiting cases. In the non-extremal case, the dilatonic scalar fields are finite at the outer event horizon.
These lecture notes review current progress on the class of conformal theories which may be studied by quantizing the conformal Toda dynamics. After summarizing recent developments in undertanding the quantum group structure of the Liouville theory, one recalls how classically, two-dimensional black holes come out from the non-abelian Toda systems, and reviews the geometrical interpretation of the classical $A_n$-Toda theories, just put forward, that relates W-geometries with the external geometries of holomorphic surfaces in complex projective spaces.
We construct correlators in the $W_4$ Toda 2d conformal field theory for a particular class of representations and demonstrate a relation to a $W_2$ (Virasoro) theory with different central charge. The relevance of the classical limits of the constructed 3-point functions and braiding matrices to problems in 4d conformal theories is discussed.
We investigate N-point string scattering amplitudes in AdS_3 space. Based on recent observations on the solutions of KZ and BPZ-type differential equations, we discuss how to describe the string theory in AdS_3 as a marginal deformation of a (flat) linear dilaton background. This representation resembles the called "discrete light-cone Liouville" realization as well as the FZZ dual description in terms of the sine-Liouville field theory. Consequently, the connection and differences between those and this realization are discussed. The free field representation presented here permits to underst…
We study the Liouville theory on a Riemann surface of genus g by means of their associated Drinfeld--Sokolov linear systems. We discuss the cohomological properties of the monodromies of these systems. We identify the space of solutions of the equations of motion which are single--valued and local and explicitly represent them in terms of Krichever--Novikov oscillators. Then we discuss the operator structure of the quantum theory, in particular we determine the quantum exchange algebras and find the quantum conditions for univalence and locality. We show that we can extend the above discussion…
The Liouville approach is applied to the quantum treatment of the dilaton gravity in two dimensions. The physical states are obtained from the BRST cohomology and correlation functions are computed up to three-point functions. For the $N=0$ case (i.e., without matter), the cosmological term operator is found to have the discrete momentum that plays a special role in the $c=1$ Liouville gravity. The correlation functions for arbitrary numbers of operators are found in the $N=0$ case, and are nonvanishing only for specific ``chirality'' configurations.
We propose that N M5-branes, put on R^4/Z_m with deformation parameters epsilon_{1,2}, realize two-dimensional theory with SU(m)_N symmetry and m-th para-W_N symmetry. This includes the standard W_N symmetry for m=1 and super-Viraroro symmetry for m=N=2. We provide a small check of this proposal by calculating the central charge of the 2d theory from the anomaly polynomial of the 6d theory.
Liouville and Toda gravity theories with non-vanishing interaction potentials have spectra obtained by dividing the free-field spectra for these cases by the Weyl group of the corresponding $A_1$ or $A_2$ Lie algebra. We study the canonical transformations between interacting and free fields using the technique of intertwining operators, giving explicit constructions for the wavefunctions and showing that they are invariant under the corresponding Weyl groups. These explicit constructions also permit a detailed analysis of the operator-state maps and of the nature of the Seiberg bounds.
The role played by the Euler anomaly in the dictionary relating sphere partition functions of four dimensional theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ and two dimensional nonrational CFTs is clarified. On the two dimensional side, this involves a careful treatment of scale factors in Liouville/Toda correlators. Using ideas from tinkertoy constructions for Gaiotto duality, a framework is proposed for evaluating these scale factors. The representation theory of Weyl groups plays a critical role in this framework.
We discuss some aspects of Liouville field theory, starting from operator equation of motion in presence of two screening charges and re-derive the dual zero mode Schwinger Dyson equations for the two screening charges from the path integral. Using functional methods we show the familiar pole structure of Liouville correlation function using the partition function. Next we discuss a generalized structure of the correlation functions obtained from the zero mode functional equations. From this structure we infer the use of the Barnes double Gamma functions to construct a part of the denominator …
We find and study solutions to the Einstein equations in D dimensions coupled to a scalar field source with a Liouville potential under the assumption of D-2 planar symmetry. The general static or time-dependent solutions are found yielding three classes of SO(D-2) symmetric spacetimes. In D=4 homogeneous and isotropic subsets of these solutions yield planar scalar field cosmologies. In D=5 they represent the general static or time-dependent backgrounds for a dilatonic wall-type brane Universe of planar cosmological symmetry. Here we apply these solutions as SO(8) symmetric backgrounds to non-…
In a previous paper it was shown that the quantum consistency conditions for the dilaton-gravity theory of Callan et al., imply that the cosmological constant term undergoes a dilaton dependent renormalization, in such a manner that the theory can be written as a Liouville-like theory. In this paper we discuss the physical interpretation of the solutions of this theory. In particular we demonstrate explicitly how quantum corrections tame the black hole singularity. Also under the assumption that in asymptotically Minkowski coordinates, there are no incoming or outgoing ghosts, we show that the…
Correlation functions of Toda field vertices are investigated by applying the method of integrating zero-mode developed for Liouville theory. We generalize the relations among the zero-, two- and three-point couplings known in Liouville case to arbitrary Toda theories. Two- and three-point functions of Toda vertices associated with the simple roots are obtained.
We study electrically charged, dilaton black holes, which possess infinitesimal angular momentum in the presence of one or two Liouville type potentials. These solutions are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter. Some properties of the solutions are discussed.
The world-sheet quantum conformal invariance can be realized in the presence of the conformal factor $F$, by inclusion of Liouville term. In the background with linear dilaton field, $Φ(x)=Φ_0+a_μx^μ$, the field $F$ becomes a new noncommutative variable. Therefore, it is natural to extend space-time with a new coordinate, $F$, in order to unify expressions for noncommutativity parameter $Θ^{ij}$ of the space-time coordinates $x^i$, with the part $Θ^i$ connecting noncommutativity between coordinates $x^i$ and $F$. In this way we solve the problems of Dp-brane noncommutativity in a more elegant …
In this paper we, first, present a class of charged rotating solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with zero and Liouville-type potentials. We find that these solutions can present a black hole/string with two regular horizons, an extreme black hole or a naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitable. We also compute the conserved and thermodynamic quantities, and show that they satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Second, we obtain the ($n+1$%)-dimensional rotating solutions in Einstein-dilaton gravity with Liouville-type potential.…
The scope of this work concerns the adaptation of the parallelizability pp-wave (Ppp-wave) process to D=10 type IIB string backgrounds in the presence of the non-trivial anti-self dual R-R 5-form $\QTR{cal}{F}$. This is important in the sense that it gives rise to some unsuspected properties. In fact, exact solutions of type IIB string backgrounds on Ppp-waves are discussed. For the $u$-dependence of the dilaton field $Φ$, we establish explicitly a correspondence between type IIB supergravity equations of motion and 2d-conformal Liouville field theory. We show also that the corresponding conse…
Poletti and Wiltshire have shown that, with the exception of a pure cosmological constant, the solution of a dilaton black hole in the background of de Sitter or anti-de Sitter universe, does not exist in the presence of one Liouville-type dilaton potential. Here with the combination of three Liouville-type dilaton potentials, we obtain the dilaton black hole solutions in the background of de Sitter or anti-de Sitter universe.
We propose a relation between correlation functions in the 2d A_{N-1} conformal Toda theories and the Nekrasov instanton partition functions in certain conformal N=2 SU(N) 4d quiver gauge theories. Our proposal generalises the recently uncovered relation between the Liouville theory and SU(2) quivers. New features appear in the analysis that have no counterparts in the Liouville case.
In this work we systematically study the island formula in the general asymptotically flat eternal black holes in generalized dilaton gravity theories or in higher dimensional spherical black holes. Under some reasonable and mild assumptions we prove that the island always appears barely outside of the horizon in the late time of Hawking radiation so that the information paradox is resolved. In particular, we find proper island in Liouville black hole which solves the puzzle of arXiv:2105.03271.
We investigate the underlying quantum group symmetry of 2d Liouville and dilaton gravity models, both consolidating known results and extending them to the cases with $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetry. We first calculate the mixed parabolic representation matrix element (or Whittaker function) of $\text{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb{R}))$ and review its applications to Liouville gravity. We then derive the corresponding matrix element for $\text{U}_q(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2, \mathbb{R}))$ and apply it to explain structural features of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Liouville supergravity. We show that this matrix…
We study a bi-parametric family of dilaton gravity models with constant and negative curvature. This family includes the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and the Liouville gravity model induced by a bosonic string. Furthermore, this family is conformally equivalent to the hiperbolic dilaton models. We propose boundary conditions in the Fefferman-Graham and in the Eddington-Finkelstein gauge. We check the consistency of the asymptotic conditions by computing the entropy of their black hole solution.
We report the discovered class of exact static solutions of several 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton systems: string-induced, Liouville, trigonometric, polynomial, etc., for three basic topologies (spherical, hyperbolical and flat) being uniformly treated. In addition to the usual electric-magnetic duality this class obeys a certain extended duality between Maxwell-dilaton coupling and dilaton mass. Though major solutions we obtain are dyonic, the class also comprises interesting neutral models. As a by-product, we significantly succeded in resolving of the two important problems, one of which has …
We find and analyse solutions of Einstein's equations in arbitrary d dimensions and in the presence of a scalar field with a Liouville potential coupled to a Maxwell field. We consider spacetimes of cylindrical symmetry or again subspaces of dimension d-2 with constant curvature and analyse in detail the field equations and manifest their symmetries. The field equations of the full system are shown to reduce to a single or couple of ODE's which can be used to solve analytically or numerically the theory for the symmetry at hand. Further solutions can also be generated by a solution generating …
We present a new class of slowly rotating black hole solutions in $(n+1)$-dimensional $(n\geq3)$ Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in the presence of Liouville-type potential for the dilaton field and an arbitrary value of the dilaton coupling constant. Because of the presence of the dilaton field, the asymptotic behaviour of these solutions are neither flat nor (A)dS. In the absence of a dilaton field, our solution reduces to the $(n+1)$-dimensional Kerr-Newman modification thereof for small rotation parameter \cite{Aliev2}. We also compute the angular momentum and the gyromagnetic ratio of th…
In this work, a new class of slowly rotating black hole solutions in dilaton gravity has been obtained where dilaton field is coupled with nonlinear Maxwell invariant. The background space-time is a stationary axisymmetric geometry. Here, it has been shown that the dilaton potential can be written in the form of generalized three Liouville-type potentials. In the presence of this three Liouville-type dilaton potential, the asymptotic behavior of the obtained solutions are neither flat nor (A)dS. One bizarre property of the electric field is that the electric field goes to zero when $r\rightarr…
First, I present two new classes of magnetic rotating solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with Liouville-type potential. The first class of solutions yields a 4-dimensional spacetime with a longitudinal magnetic field generated by a static or spinning magnetic string. I find that these solutions have no curvature singularity and no horizons, but have a conic geometry. In these spacetimes, when the rotation parameter does not vanish, there exists an electric field, and therefore the spinning string has a net electric charge which is proportional to the rotation parame…
It was recently observed that boundary correlators of the elementary scalar field of the Liouville theory on AdS$_2$ background are the same (up to a non-trivial proportionality coefficient) as the correlators of the chiral stress tensor of the Liouville CFT on the complex plane restricted to the real line. The same relation generalizes to the conformal abelian Toda theory: boundary correlators of Toda scalars on AdS$_2$ are directly related to the correlation functions of the chiral $\mathcal W$-symmetry generators in the Toda CFT and thus are essentially controlled by the underlying infinite…
In this paper we reformulate the dilaton-gravity theory of Callan \etal\ as a new effective conformal field theory which turns out to be a generalization of the so-called $SL_2$-conformal affine Toda (CAT) theory studied some times ago by Babelon and Bonora. We quantize this model, thus keeping in account the dilaton-gravity quantum effects. We then implement a Renormalization Group analysis to study the black hole thermodynamics and the final state of the Hawking evaporation.
We proceed to study a (1+1)-dimensional dilaton gravity system with a hyperbolic dilaton potential. Introducing a couple of new variables leads to two copies of Liouville equations with two constraint conditions. In particular, in conformal gauge, the constraints can be expressed with Schwarzian derivatives. We revisit the vacuum solutions in light of the new variables and reveal its dipole-like structure. Then we present a time-dependent solution which describes formation of a black hole with a pulse. Finally, the black hole thermodynamics is considered by taking account of conformal matters …
A class of $(n+1)$-dimensional topological black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with Liouville-type potentials for the dilaton field is presented. In these spacetimes, black hole horizon and cosmological horizon can be an $(n-1)$-dimensional positive, zero or negative constant curvature hypersurface. Because of the presence of the dilaton field, these topological black holes are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter. We calculate the charge, mass, temperature, entropy and electric potential of these solutions. We also analyze thermodynamics of these topological bl…
We generalize the Lax pair and Bäcklund transformations for Liouville and Toda field theories as well as their supersymmetric generalizations, to the case of arbitrary Riemann surfaces. We make use of the fact that Toda field theory arises naturally and geometrically in a restriction of so called $W$--geometry to ordinary Riemannian geometry. This derivation sheds light on the geometrical structure underlying complete integrability of these systems. (Invited talk presented at the 877th meeting of the American Mathematical Society, USC, November 1992 and at the YITP workshop ``Directions on Qua…
We study two-dimensional Liouville gravity and minimal string theory on spaces with fixed length boundaries. We find explicit formulas describing the gravitational dressing of bulk and boundary correlators in the disk. Their structure has a striking resemblance with observables in 2d BF (plus a boundary term), associated to a quantum deformation of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, a connection we develop in some detail. For the case of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory, we compare and match the results from the continuum approach with a matrix model calculation, and verify that in the large $p$ limit the c…
A model of matter-coupled gravity in two dimensions is quantized. The crucial requirement for performing the quantization is the vanishing of the conformal anomaly, which is achieved by tuning a parameter in the interaction potential. The spectrum of the theory is determined by mapping the model first onto a field theory with a Liouville interaction, then onto a linear dilaton conformal field theory. In absence of matter fields a pure gauge theory with massless ground state is found; otherwise it is possible to minimally couple up to 11 matter scalar fields: in this case the ground state is ta…
We consider charged black holes with curved horizons, in five dimensional dilaton gravity in the presence of Liouville-type potential for the dilaton field. We show how, by solving a pair of coupled differential equations, infinitesimally small angular momentum can be added to these static solutions to obtain charged rotating dilaton black hole solutions. In the absence of dilaton field, the non-rotating version of the solution reduces to the five dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole, and the rotating version reproduces the five dimensional Kerr-Newman modification thereof for small rotat…
We examine the $(n+1)$-dimensional $(n\geq3)$ action in which gravity is coupled to the Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamic and a dilaton field. We construct a new $(n+1)$-dimensional analytic solution of this theory in the presence of Liouville-type dilaton potentials. These solutions which describe charged topological dilaton black holes with nonlinear electrodynamics, have unusual asymptotics. They are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter. The event horizons of these black holes can be an $(n-1)$-dimensional positive, zero or negative constant curvature hypersurface. We also an…
We construct a new class of $(n+1)$-dimensional $(n\geq3)$ black hole solutions in Einstein-Born-Infeld-dilaton gravity with Liouville-type potential for the dilaton field and investigate their properties. These solutions are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter. We find that these solutions can represent black holes, with inner and outer event horizons, an extreme black hole or a naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We compute the thermodynamic quantities of the black hole solutions and find that these quantities satisfy the first law of …
The continuum (Liouville) approach to the two-dimensional (2-D) quantum gravity is reviewed with particular attention to the $c=1$ conformal matter coupling, and new results on a related problem of dilaton gravity are reported. After finding the physical states, we examine the procedure to compute correlation functions. The physical states in the relative cohomology show up as intermediate state poles of the correlation functions. The states in the absolute cohomology but not in the relative cohomology arise as auxiliary fields in string field theory. The Liouville approach is applied also to …
In this paper we obtain unstable even-parity eigenmodes to the static regular spherically symmetric solutions of the SU(2) Yang-Mills-dilaton coupled system of equations in 3+1 Minkowski space-time. The corresponding matrix Sturm-Liouville problem is solved numerically by means of the continuous analogue of Newton's method. The method, being the powerful tool for solving both boundary-value and Sturm-Liouville problems, is described in details.
The metric of a higher-dimensional dilaton black hole in the presence of a cosmological constant is constructed. It is found that the cosmological constant is coupled to the dilaton in a non-trivial way. The dilaton potential with respect to the cosmological constant consists of three Liouville-type potentials.
We consider solutions of the cosmological equations pertaining to a dissipative, dilaton-driven off-equilibrium Liouville Cosmological model, which may describe the effective field theoretic limit of a non-critical string model of the Universe. The non-criticality may be the result of an early-era catastrophic cosmic event, such as a big-bang, brane-world collision etc. The evolution of the various cosmological parameters of the model are obtained, and the effects of the dilaton and off-shell Liouville terms, including briefly those on relic densities, which distinguish the model from conventi…
We discuss the quantization of the 2d gravity theory of Callan, Giddings, Harvey, and Strominger (CGHS), following the procedure of David, and of Distler and Kawai. We find that the physics depends crucially on whether the number of matter fields is greater than or less than 24. In the latter case the singularity pointed out by several authors is absent but the physical interpretation is unclear. In the former case (the one studied by CGHS) the quantum theory which gives CGHS in the linear dilaton semi-classical limit, is different from that which gives CGHS in the extreme Liouville regime.
We consider D-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to (n-1) U(1) vector fields and (n-2) dilatonic scalars. We find that for some appropriate exponential dilaton couplings of the field strengths, the equations of motion for the static charged ansatz can be reduced to a set of one-dimensional SL(n,R) Toda equations. This allows us to obtain a general class of explicit black holes with mass and (n-1) independent charges. The near-horizon geometry in the extremal limit is AdS_2 x S^{D-2}. The n=2 case gives the Reissner-Nordstrom solution, and the n=3 example includes the Kaluza-Klein dyon. We st…
