In this work we systematically study the island formula in the general asymptotically flat eternal black holes in generalized dilaton gravity theories or in higher dimensional spherical black holes. Under some reasonable and mild assumptions we prove that the island always appears barely outside of the horizon in the late time of Hawking radiation so that the information paradox is resolved. In particular, we find proper island in Liouville black hole which solves the puzzle of arXiv:2105.03271.
We study the islands and the Page curve in the 1+1-dimensional eternal dilaton black hole models. Without islands, the entanglement entropy of the radiation grows linearly at late time. However with an island, its growth stops at the value of almost twice of the black hole entropy. Therefore an island emerges at the late time, and the entanglement entropy of the radiation shows the Page curve.
The large-N limit of asymptotically flat two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to N free matter fields provides a useful toy model for semiclassical black holes and the information paradox. Analyses of the asymptotic information flux as given by the entanglement entropy show that it follows the Hawking curve, indicating that information is destroyed in these models. Recently, motivated by developments in AdS/CFT, a semiclassical island rule for entropy has been proposed. We define and compute the island rule entropy for black hole formation and evaporation in the large-N RST model of dilaton…
We study the Page curve in the four dimensional asymptotically flat eternal Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger dilaton black holes by applying the "quantum extremal surface" prescription. The results demonstrate that without island, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation is proportional to time and divergent at late times. While taking account of the emergence of the island extending slightly outside the event horizon, the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation stops growing and eventually reaches a saturation value, which is twice of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and consistent with the…
We derive a novel four-dimensional black hole with planar horizon that asymptotes to the linear dilaton background. The usual growth of its entanglement entropy before Page's time is established. After that, emergent islands modify to a large extent the entropy, which becomes finite and is saturated by its Bekenstein-Hawking value in accordance with the finiteness of the von Neumann entropy of eternal black holes. We demonstrate that viewed from the string frame, our solution is the two-dimensional Witten black hole with two additional free bosons. We generalize our findings by considering a g…
General static solutions of effectively 2-dimensional Einstein-Dilaton-Maxwell-Scalar theories are obtained. Our model action includes a class of 2-d dilaton gravity theories coupled with a $U(1)$ gauge field and a massless scalar field. Therefore it also describes the spherically symmetric reduction of $d$-dimensional Einstein-Scalar-Maxwell theories. The properties of the analytic solutions are briefly discussed.
It is shown by both analytical methods and numerical simulations that extremely long living spherically symmetric oscillons appear in virtually any real scalar field theory coupled to a massless dilaton (DS theories). In fact such "dilatonic" oscillons are already present in the simplest non-trivial DS theory -- a free massive scalar field coupled to the dilaton. It is shown that in analogy to the previously considered cases with a single nonlinear scalar field, in DS theories there are also time periodic quasibreathers (QB) associated to small amplitude oscillons. Exploiting the QB picture th…
Trace anomaly for dilaton coupled conformal theories on curved background with non-zero dilaton is found from supergravity side as an IR effect using AdS/CFT correspondence. For $d=2$ it coincides with the conformal anomaly for dilaton coupled scalar (up to total derivative term which is known to be ambiguous). In four-dimensional case we get conformal anomaly for ${\cal N}=4$ super YM theory interacting with conformal supergravity. In the same way the calculation of dilaton dependent conformal anomaly in higher dimensions seems to be much easier than using standard QFT methods.
It is shown that the recently obtained quantum wave functionals in terms of the CJZ variables for generic 2d dilaton gravity are equivalent to the previously reported exact quantum wave functionals in geometrical variables. A third representation of these exact quantum states is also presented.
In ordinary gravitational theories, any local bulk operator in an entanglement wedge is accompanied by a long-range gravitational dressing that extends to the asymptotic part of the wedge. Islands are the only known examples of entanglement wedges that are disconnected from the asymptotic region of spacetime. In this paper, we show that the lack of an asymptotic region in islands creates a potential puzzle that involves the gravitational Gauss law, independently of whether or not there is a non-gravitational bath. In a theory with long-range gravity, the energy of an excitation localized to th…
We study dilaton-gravity theories in 2-dimensions obtained by dimensional reduction of higher dimensional nonrelativistic theories. Focussing on certain families of extremal charged hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black branes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories with an extra gauge field in 4-dimensions, we obtain $AdS_2$ backgrounds in the near horizon throats. We argue that these backgrounds can be obtained in equivalent theories of 2-dim dilaton-gravity with an extra scalar, descending from the higher dimensional scalar, and an interaction potential with the dilaton. A simple subcase here i…
We find exactly solvable dilaton gravity theories containing a U(1) gauge field in two dimensional space-time. The classical general solutions for the gravity sector (the metric plus the dilaton field) of the theories coupled to a massless complex scalar field are obtained in terms of the stress-energy tensor and the U(1) current of the scalar field. We discuss issues that arise when we attempt to use these models for the study of the gravitational back-reaction.
The action for 2d dilatonic supergravity with dilaton coupled matter and dilaton multiplets is constructed. Trace anomaly and anomaly induced effective action (in components as well as in supersymmetric form) for matter supermultiplet on bosonic background are found. The one-loop effective action and large-$N$ effective action for quantum dilatonic supergravity are also calculated. Using induced effective action one can estimate the back-reaction of dilaton coupled matter to the classical black hole solutions of dilatonic supergravity. That is done on the example of supersymmetric CGHS model w…
We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories with a cosmological constant and U(1)^N gauge symmetry, considering metrics asymptotically approaching the Lifshiftz metric. We study the dependence of the phase diagram on the value of the dynamical exponent. Along the way, we apply holographic renormalization and propose a counterterm valid for arbitrary dimension and dynamical exponent in our setup.
Following a recently proposed confinement generating mechanism, we provide a new string inspired model with a massive dilaton and a new dilaton coupling function [5]. By solving analytically the equations of motion, a new class of confining interquark potentials is derived which includes several popular potential forms given in the literature.
We discuss the low-energy effective string theory when moduli of the compactified manifold are present. Assuming a nontrivial coupling of the moduli to the Maxwell tensor, we find a class of regular black hole solutions. Both the thermodynamical and the geometrical structure of these solutions are discussed
The formulation of 2d-dilaton theories, like spherically reduced Einstein gravity, is greatly facilitated in a formulation as a first order theory with nonvanishing bosonic torsion. This is especially also true at the quantum level. The interpretation of superextensions as graded Poisson sigma models is found to cover generically all possible 2d supergravities. Superfields and thus superfluous auxiliary fields are avoided altogether. The procedure shows that generalizations of bosonic 2d models are highly ambiguous.
We get the general static, spherically symmetric solutions of the d-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories by dimensionally reducing them to a class of 2-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. By studying the symmetries of the actions for the static equations of motion, we find field redefinitions that nearly reduce these theories to the d-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theories, and therefore enable us to get the exact solutions. We do not make any assumption about the asymptotic space-time structure. As a result, our 4-dimensional solutions contain the asymptotically flat Garfinkl…
We discuss string theories with small numbers of non-compact moduli and describe constructions of string theories whose low-energy limit is described by various pure supergravity theories. We also construct a D=4,N=4 compactification of type II string theory with 34 vector fields.
We investigate the dependence of the gauge couplings on the dilaton field in string effective theories at the one--loop level. First we resolve the discrepancies between statements based on symmetry considerations and explicit calculations in string effective theories on this subject. A calculation of the relevant one--loop scattering amplitudes in string theory gives us further information and allows us to derive the exact form of the corresponding effective Lagrangian. In particular there is no dilaton dependent one--loop correction to the holomorphic $f$--function arising from massive strin…
The conformal anomaly for 4D gravity-matter theories, which are non-minimally coupled with the dilaton, is systematically studied. Special care is taken for: rescaling of fields, treatment of total derivatives, hermiticity of the system operator and choice of measure. Scalar, spinor and vector fields are taken as the matter quantum fields and their explicit conformal anomalies in the gravity-dilaton background are found. The cohomology analysis is done and some new conformal invariants and trivial terms, involving the dilaton, are obtained. The symmetry of the constant shift of the dilaton fie…
We investigate the vacuum instability in the presence of dilaton field in a holographic set up. Although the dilaton is a bulk field, it leads to the vacuum instability on the boundary. We show that the whole process crucially depends on the probe brane position and as well on the radial coordinate. So that the effects of dilaton scale parameter in different regions of the bulk or for different probe brane positions are different. We also observe that in our study the temperature can strengthen the effect of scale parameter in reducing the potential barrier. Finally, we show that this Schwinge…
In multidimensional gravity with an arbitrary number of internal Ricci-flat factor spaces, interacting with electric and magnetic $p$-branes, spherically symmetric configurations are considered. It is shown that all single-brane black-hole solutions are stable under spherically symmetric perturbations, whereas similar solutions possessing naked singularities turn out to be catastrophically unstable. The black hole stability conclusion is extended to some classes of configurations with intersecting branes. These results do not depend on the particular composition of the $D$-dimensional space-ti…
We consider two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories with a generic exponential potential for the dilaton, and obtain the most general black hole solutions in the Schwarzshild form. We discuss their geometrical and thermodynamical properties. We also study these models from the point of view of gauge theories of the extended Poincaré group and show that they can be considered as gauge theories with broken symmetry. Finally, we examine the theory in a hamiltonian formalism and discuss its quantization and its symmetries.
We study Big-Bang or -Crunch cosmological singularities in 2-dimensional dilaton-gravity-scalar theories, in general obtained by dimensional reduction of higher dimensional theories. The dilaton potential encodes information about the asymptotic data defining the theories, and encompasses various families such as flat space, $AdS$, conformally $AdS$ as arising from nonconformal branes, and more general nonrelativistic theories. We find a kind of universal near singularity behaviour independent of the dilaton potential, giving universal interrelations between the exponents defining the time beh…
We discuss aspects of generic 2-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. The 2-dim geometry is in general conformal to $AdS_2$ and has IR curvature singularities at zero temperature: this can be regulated by a black hole. The on-shell action is divergent: we discuss the holographic energy-momentum tensor by adding appropriate counterterms. For theories obtained by dimensional reduction of the gravitational sector of higher dimensional theories, for instance higher dimensional $AdS$ gravity as a concrete example, the 2-dimensional description dovetails with the higher dimensional one. We also disc…
We summarize recent results regarding single and double soft theorems of two different particles named dilatons, the Nambu-Goldstone boson of the spontaneously broken conformal field theories and the massless scalar particle of the closed string theories. Similarities and differences between the soft theorems of these two particles are discussed as well as their connections with the symmetries of the theories.
A large class of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories in asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetimes are holographically dual to a matrix integral, interpreted as an ensemble average over Hamiltonians. Viewing these theories as Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with a gas of defects, we extend this duality to a broader class of dilaton potentials compared to previous work by including conical defects with small deficit angles. In order to do this we show that these theories are equal to the large $p$ limit of a natural deformation of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory.
We consider quantization of open string theories in linear dilaton and constant antisymmetric tensor backgrounds and discuss the noncommutativity of space-time coordinates arising in such theories, including their relationship with light-like noncommutativity as well as backgrounds with null isometries. It is argued that the results can also be understood using space-time equations of motion of the string modes. We then present N= 2 supersymmetric generalization of these theories and the associated noncommutativity structure.
A candidate for the confining string of gauge theories is constructed via a representation of the ultraviolet divergences of quantum field theory by a closed string dilaton insertion, computed through the soft dilaton theorem. The resulting (critical) confining string is conformally invariant, singles out naturally $d=4$ dimensions, and can not be used to represent theories with Landau poles.
We discuss R-symmetry in locally supersymmetric $N=2$ gauge theories coupled to hypermultiplets, which can be viewed as effective theories of heterotic string models. In this type of supergravities a suitable R-symmetry exists and can be used to topologically twist the theory. The vector multiplet of the dilaton-axion field has a different R-charge assignment with respect to the other vector multiplets.
We show how a stress-energy pseudotensor can be constructed in two-dimensional dilatonic gravity theories (classical, CGHS and RST) and derive the expression for the ADM mass in these theories from it. We define the Bondi mass for these theories by using the pseudotensor formalism. The resulting expression is the generalization of the expression for the ADM mass. The boundary condition needed for the energy conservation is also investigated. It is shown that under appropriate boundary conditions, our definition of the Bondi mass is exactly the ADM mass minus the matter radiation energy at null…
A new approach is provided to determine the dilaton--antisymmetric tensor coupling in a supergravity theory by considering the static supersymmetric field configuration around a super extended object, which is consistently formulated in a curved superspace. By this, the corresponding SUSY transformation rules can also be determined for vanishing fermionic fields as well as bosonic fields other than those in the determined coupling. Therefore, we can, in turn, use this determined part of the supergravity theory to study all the related vacuum-like solutions. We have determined the dilaton--anti…
Quantization of two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to conformal matter is investigated. Working in conformal gauge about a fixed background metric, the theory may be viewed as a sigma model whose target space is parameterized by the dilaton $ϕ$ and conformal factor $ρ$. A precise connection is given between the constraint that the theory be independent of the background metric and conformal invariance of the resulting sigma model. Although the action is renormalizable, new coupling constants must be specified at each order in perturbation theory in order to determine the quantum theory. T…
We consider the setup of an evaporating black hole in AdS$_{4}$ coupled to an external bath, embedded in type IIB string theory. We study quantum extremal islands in these backgrounds, in relation to the existence of a massive graviton. Using explicit results of the microscopic embedding of AdS$_{4}$ massive gravity in string theory, we investigate whether it is possible to achieve backgrounds with extremal islands, in which the lowest lying graviton is only slightly massive. For certain regions of the microscopic parameters, the graviton mass can be computed explicitly, and we explain how it …
We show that a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theories are related to higher dimensional AdS-Maxwell gravity via a dimensional reduction over compact Einstein spaces combined with continuation in the dimension of the compact space to non-integral values (`generalized dimensional reduction'). This relates (fairly complicated) black hole solutions of EMD theories to simple black hole/brane solutions of AdS-Maxwell gravity and explains their properties. The generalized dimensional reduction is used to infer the holographic dictionary and the hydrodynamic behavior for this class of theori…
In this paper we propose tachyon effective actions for unstable D-branes in superstring and bosonic string theories in the presence of the linear dilaton background.
We discuss the existence of de Sitter inflationary solutions for the string-inspired fourth-derivative gravity theories with dilaton field. We consider a space-time of arbitrary dimension D and an arbitrary parametrization of the target space metric. The specific features of the theory in dimension D=4 and those of the special ghost-free parametrization of the metric are found. We also consider similar string-inspired theories with torsion and construct an inflationary solution with torsion and dilaton for D=4. The stability of the inflationary solutions is also investigated.
General properties of a class of two-dimensional dilaton gravity (DG) theories with multi-exponential potentials are studied and a subclass of these theories, in which the equations of motion reduce to Toda and Liouville equations, is treated in detail. A combination of parameters of the equations should satisfy a certain constraint that is identified and solved for the general multi-exponential model. From the constraint it follows that in DG theories the integrable Toda equations, generally, cannot appear without accompanying Liouville equations. We also show how the wave-like solutions of t…
The crucial problem of how the dilaton field is stabilized at a phenomenologically acceptable value in string theories remains essentially unsolved. We show that the usual scenario of assuming that the dilaton is fixed by the (SUSY breaking) dynamics of just the dilaton itself (dilaton dominance scenario) is {\em inconsistent} unless the Kähler potential receives very important perturbative or non-perturbative contributions. Then, the usual predictions about soft breaking terms are lost, but still is possible to derive model-independent predictions for them.
We systematically calculate the quantum extremal surface (QES) associated with Hawking radiation for general $D$-dimensional ($D\geq2$) asymptotically flat (or AdS) eternal black holes using the island formula. We collect the Hawking radiation particles by a non-gravitational bath and find that a QES exists in the near-horizon region outside the black hole when $c\cdot G_{(D)}$ is smaller enough where $c$ is the central charge of the conformal matter and $G_{(D)}$ the $D$-dimensional Newton constant. The locations of the QES in these backgrounds are obtained and the late-time radiation entropy…
We construct charged generalizations of the dilaton C-metric in various four-dimensional theories, including STU gauged supergravity as well as a one-parameter family of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories whose scalar potential can be expressed in terms of a superpotential. In addition, we present time-dependent generalizations of the dilaton C-metric and dilaton Ernst solutions, for which the time evolution is driven by the dilaton. These C-metric solutions provide holographic descriptions of a strongly-coupled three-dimensional field theory on the background of a black hole, a gravitational s…
We investigate the classical and semiclassical features of generic 2D, matter-coupled, dilaton gravity theories. In particular, we show that the mass, the temperature and the flux of Hawking radiation associated with 2D black holes are invariant under dilaton-dependent Weyl rescalings of the metric. The relationship between quantum anomalies and Hawking radiation is discussed.
The black hole of the widely used ordinary 2d--dilaton model (DBH) deviates from the Schwarzschild black hole (SBH) of General Relativity in one important feature: Whereas non-null extremals or geodesics show the expected incompleteness this turns out {\it not to be the case for the null extremals}. After a simple analysis in Kruskal coordinates for singularities with power behavior of this -- apparently till now overlooked -- property we discuss the global structure of a large family of generalized dilaton theories which does not only contain the DBH and SBH but also other proposed dilaton th…
We consider multiverse models in two-dimensional linear dilaton-gravity theories as toy models of false vacuum eternal inflation. Coupling conformal matter we calculate the Von Neumann entropy of subregions. When these are sufficiently large we find that an island develops covering most of the rest of the multiverse, leading to a Page-like transition. This resonates with a description of multiverse models in semiclassical quantum cosmology, where a measure for local predictions is given by saddle point geometries which coarse-grain over any structure associated with eternal inflation beyond on…
We derive the anomalous transformation law of the quantum stress tensor for a 2D massless scalar field coupled to an external dilaton. This provides a generalization of the Virasoro anomaly which turns out to be consistent with the trace anomaly. We apply these results to compute vacuum polarization of a spherical star based on the equivalence principle.
Dimensional reduction of generalized gravity theories or string theories generically yields dilaton fields in the lower-dimensional effective theory. Thus at the level of D=4 theories, and cosmology many models contain more than just one scalar field (e.g. inflaton, Higgs, quintessence). Our present work is restricted to two-dimensional gravity theories with only two dilatons which nevertheless allow a large class of physical applications. The notions of factorizability, simplicity and conformal simplicity, Einstein form and Jordan form are the basis of an adequate classification. We show that…
A new class of integrable two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories, in which scalar matter fields satisfy the Toda equations, is proposed. The simplest case of the Toda system is considered in some detail, and on this example we outline how the general solution can be obtained. Then we demonstrate how the wave-like solutions of the general Toda systems can be simply derived. In the dilaton gravity theory this solutions describe nonlinear waves coupled to gravity. A special attention is paid to making the analytic structure of the solutions of the Toda equations as simple and transparent as pos…
We study a general class of two-dimensional theories of the dilaton-gravity type inspired by string theory and show that they admit charged multiple-horizon black holes. These solutions are proved to satisfy scalar no-hair theorems.
In theories of Einstein gravity coupled with a dilaton and a two-form, a soft theorem for the two-form, known as the Kalb-Ramond B-field, has so far been missing. In this work we fill the gap, and in turn formulate a unified soft theorem valid for gravitons, dilatons and B-fields in any tree-level scattering amplitude involving the three massless states. The new soft theorem is fixed by means of on-shell gauge invariance and enters at the subleading order of the graviton's soft theorem. In contrast to the subsubleading soft behavior of gravitons and dilatons, we show that the soft behavior of …
We reanalyze and expand upon models proposed in 2015 for linear dilaton black holes, and use them to test several speculative ideas about black hole physics. We examine ideas based on the definition of quantum extremal surfaces in quantum field theory in curved space-time. The low energy effective field theory of our model is the large N CGHS model, which includes the one loop effects that are taken into account in the "island" proposal for understanding the Page curve. Contrary to the results of the island analysis, that solution leads to a singular geometry for the evaporated black hole. If …
Black hole solutions in the context of a generic matter-coupled two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory are discussed both at the classical and semiclassical level. Starting from general assumptions, a criterion for the existence of black holes is given. The relationship between conformal anomaly and Hawking radiation is extended to a broad class of two-dimensional dilaton gravity models. A general and simple formula relating the magnitude of the Hawking effect to the dilaton potential evaluated on the horizon is derived.
After reviewing the basic aspects of the exactly solvable quantum-corrected dilaton-gravity theories in two dimensions, we discuss a (subjective) selection of other aspects: a) supersymmetric extensions, b) canonical formalism, ADM-mass, and the functional integral measure, and c) a positive energy theorem and its application to the ADM- and Bondi-masses.
We point out that the statements in [hep-th/9903063] concerning the regularity of static axially symmetric solutions in Yang-Mills-dilaton (YMD) [1] and Einstein-Yang-Mills(-dilaton) (EYMD) theory [2,3] are incorrect, and that the non-singular local gauge potential of the YMD solutions [4] is twice differentiable.
