It was known that one-point functions in the ABJM matrix model (obtained by applying the localization technique to one-point functions of the half-BPS Wilson loop operator in the ABJM theory) satisfy the Jacobi-Trudi formula, which strongly indicates the integrable structure of the system. In this paper, we identify the integrable structure of two-point functions in the ABJM matrix model as the two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy. The identification implies infinitely many non-linear differential equations for the generating function of the two-point functions.
It is known that the partition functions of the U(N) x U(N+M) ABJM theory satisfy a set of bilinear relations, which, written in the grand partition function, was recently found to be the q-Painleve III_3 equation. In this paper we have suggested a similar bilinear relation holds for the ABJM theory with N=6 preserving mass deformation for an arbitrary complex value of mass parameter, to which we have provided several non-trivial checks by using the exact values of the partition functions for various N,k,M and the mass parameter. For particular choices of the mass parameters labeled by integer…
The extended Toda hierarchy of Carlet, Dubrovin and Zhang is reconsidered in the light of a 2+1D extension of the 1D Toda hierarchy constructed by Ogawa. These two extensions of the 1D Toda hierarchy turn out to have a very similar structure, and the former may be thought of as a kind of dimensional reduction of the latter. In particular, this explains an origin of the mysterious structure of the bilinear formalism proposed by Milanov.
In this paper, we construct the additional symmetries of the fermionic $(2N,2M)$-Toda hierarchy basing on the generalization of the $N{=}(1|1)$ supersymmetric two dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy. These additional flows constitute a $w_{\infty}\times w_{\infty}$ Lie algebra. As a Bosonic reduction of the $N{=}(1|1)$ supersymmetric two dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy and the fermionic $(2N,2M)$-Toda hierarchy, we define a new extended fermionic $(2N,2M)$-Toda hierarchy which admits a Bosonic Block type superconformal structure.
We extend the Sato equations of the N=(1|1) supersymmetric Toda lattice hierarchy by two new infinite series of fermionic flows and demonstrate that the algebra of the flows of the extended hierarchy is the Borel subalgebra of the N=(2|2) loop superalgebra.
The quasiclassical solution to the extended Toda chain hierarchy, corresponding to the deformation of the simplest Seiberg-Witten theory by all descendants of the dual topological string model, is constructed explicitly in terms of the complex curve and generating differential. The first derivatives of prepotential or quasiclassical tau-function over the extra times, extending the Toda chain, are expressed through the multiple integrals of the Seiberg-Witten one-form. We derive the corresponding quasiclassical Virasoro constraints, discuss the functional formulation of the problem and propose …
Bi-Hamiltonian structure and Lax pair formulation with the spectral parameter of the generalized fermionic Toda lattice hierarchy as well as its bosonic and fermionic symmetries for different (including periodic) boundary conditions are described. Its two reductions --N=4 and N=2 supersymmetric Toda lattice hierarchies-- in different (including canonical) bases are investigated. Its r-matrix description, monodromy matrix, and spectral curves are discussed.
It is shown that the one-dimensional generalized N=4 supersymmetric Toda lattice (TL) hierarchy (nlin.Si/0311030) contains the N=4 super-KdV hierarchy with the first flow time in the role of space coordinate. Two different N=2 superfield forms of the generalized N=4 supersymmetric TL equation, which are useful when solving the N=4 super-KdV and (1,1)-GNLS hierarchies, are discussed.
The expression of the large $N$ Harish Chandra--Itzykson--Zuber (HCIZ) integral in terms of the moments of the two matrices is investigated using an auxiliary unitary two-matrix model, the associated biorthogonal polynomials and integrable hierarchy. We find that the large $N$ HCIZ integral is governed by the dispersionless Toda lattice hierarchy and derive its string equation. We use this to obtain various exact results on its expansion in powers of the moments.
Generalizing the graded commutator in superalgebras, we propose a new bracket operation on the space of graded operators with an involution. We study properties of this operation and show that the Lax representation of the two-dimensional N=(1|1) supersymmetric Toda lattice hierarchy can be realized via the generalized bracket operation; this is important in constructing the semiclassical (continuum) limit of this hierarchy. We construct the continuum limit of the N=(1|1) Toda lattice hierarchy, the dispersionless N=(1|1) Toda hierarchy. In this limit, we obtain the Lax representation, with th…
The negative symmetry flows are incorporated into the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the homogeneous $A_m$-hierarchy and its $\hat{gl} (m+1, C)$ extension. A loop group automorphism of order two is used to define a sub-hierarchy of $\hat{gl} (m+1, C)$ hierarchy containing only the odd symmetry flows. The positive and negative flows of the $\pm 1$ grade coincide with equations of the multidimensional Toda model and of topological-anti-topological fusion.
This paper mainly talks about the Cauchy two-matrix model and its corresponding integrable hi- erarchy with the help of orthogonal polynomials theory and Toda-type equations. Starting from the symmetric reduction of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials, we derive the Toda equation of CKP type (or the C-Toda lattice) as well as its Lax pair by introducing time flows. Then, matrix integral solutions to the C-Toda lattice are extended to give solutions to the CKP hierarchy which reveals the time-dependent partition function of the Cauchy two-matrix model is nothing but the τ-function of the CKP hiearc…
We investigate BPS equations which determine the configuration of an M2-M5 bound state preserving half of the supersymmetries in the ABJM theory. We argue that the BPS equations are classically integrable, showing that they admit a Lax representation. The integrable structure of the BPS equations is closely related to that of the Nahm equations. Using this relation we formulate an efficient way of constructing solutions of the BPS equations from those of the Nahm equations. As an illustration of our method, we construct explicitly the most general solutions describing two M2-branes suspended b…
The 2D Toda hierarchy occupies a central position in the family of integrable hierarchies of the Toda type. The 1D Toda hierarchy and the Ablowitz-Ladik (aka relativistic Toda) hierarchy can be derived from the 2D Toda hierarchy as reductions. These integrable hierarchies have been applied to various problems of mathematics and mathematical physics since 1990s. A recent example is a series of studies on models of statistical mechanics called the melting crystal model. This research has revealed that the aforementioned two reductions of the 2D Toda hierarchy underlie two different melting cryst…
Recently the study of Fay-type identities revealed some new features of the DKP hierarchy (also known as "the coupled KP hierarchy" and "the Pfaff lattice"). Those results are now extended to a Toda version of the DKP hierarchy (tentatively called "the Pfaff-Toda hierarchy"). Firstly, an auxiliary linear problem of this hierarchy is constructed. Unlike the case of the DKP hierarchy, building blocks of the auxiliary linear problem are difference operators. A set of evolution equations for dressing operators of the wave functions are also obtained. Secondly, a system of Fay-like identities (diff…
An algebra isomorphism between algebras of matrices and difference operators is used to investigate the discrete integrable hierarchy. We find local and non-local families of R-matrix solutions to the modified Yang-Baxter equation. The three R-theoretic Poisson structures and the Suris quadratic bracket are derived. The resulting family of bi-Poisson structures include a seminal discrete bi-Poisson structure of Kupershmidt at a special value.
An infinite class of fermionic flows of the N=(1|1) superconformal Toda lattice hierarchy is constructed and their algebraic structure is studied. We completely solve the semi-infinite N=(1|1) Toda lattice and chain hierarchies and derive their tau functions, which may be relevant for building supersymmetric matrix models. Their bosonic limit is also discussed.
Three nonequivalent real forms of the complex twisted N=2 supersymmetric Toda chain hierarchy (solv-int/9907021) in real N=1 superspace are presented. It is demonstrated that they possess a global twisted N=2 supersymmetry. We discuss a new superfield basis in which the supersymmetry transformations are local. Furthermore, a representation of this hierarchy is given in terms of two twisted chiral N=2 superfields. The relations to the s-Toda hierarchy by H. Aratyn, E. Nissimov and S. Pacheva (solv-int/9801021) as well as to the modified and derivative NLS hierarchies are established.
We couple two copies of the supersymmetric mKdV hierarchy by means of the algebraic dressing technique. This allows to deduce the whole set of $(N,N)$ supersymmetry transformations of the relativistic sector of the extended mKdV hierarchy and to interpret them as fermionic symmetry flows. The construction is based on an extended Riemann-Hilbert problem for affine Kac-Moody superalgebras with a half-integer gradation. A generalized set of relativistic-like fermionic local current identities is introduced and it is shown that the simplest one, corresponding to the lowest isospectral times $t_{\p…
Lax pair and Hamiltonian formulations of the N=4 supersymmetric Toda chain (KdV) hierarchy in N=4 superspace are proposed. The general formulae for the infinite tower of its bosonic flows in terms of the Lax operator in N=4 superspace are derived. A new N=4 superfield basis in which the flows are local is constructed and its embedding in the N=4 O(4) superconformal supercurrent is established. A proof that the flows possess five complex conjugations and aninfinite-dimensional group of discrete symmetries in N=4 superspace is presented. A relation between the two descriptions of the hierarchy i…
The exact solution of $N=2$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory is studied in the framework of the Whitham hierarchies. The solution is identified with a homogeneous solution of a Whitham hierarchy. This integrable hierarchy (Whitham-Toda hierarchy) describes modulation of a quasi-periodic solution of the (generalized) Toda lattice hierarchy associated with the hyperelliptic curves over the quantum moduli space. The relation between the holomorphic pre-potential of the low energy effective action and the $τ$ function of the (generalized) Toda lattice hierarchy is also clarified.
Finite-dimensional reductions of the 2D dispersionless Toda hierarchy, constrained by the ``string equation'' are studied. These include solutions determined by polynomial, rational or logarithmic functions, which are of interest in relation to the ``Laplacian growth'' problem governing interface dynamics. The consistency of such reductions is proved, and the Hamiltonian structure of the reduced dynamics is derived. The Poisson structure of the rationally reduced dispersionless Toda hierarchies is also derived
Three inequivalent real forms of the complex N=4 supersymmetric Toda chain hierarchy (Nucl. Phys. B558 (1999) 545, solv-int/9907004) in the real N=2 superspace with one even and two odd real coordinates are presented. It is demonstrated that the first of them possesses a global N=4 supersymmetry, while the other two admit a twisted N=4 supersymmetry. A new superfield basis in which supersymmetry transformations are local is discussed and a manifest N=4 supersymmetric representation of the N=4 Toda chain in terms of a chiral and an anti-chiral N=4 superfield is constructed. Its relation to the …
This paper is focused on geometric aspects of two particular types of finite-variable reductions in the dispersionless Toda hierarchy. The reductions are formulated in terms of "Landau-Ginzburg potentials" that play the role of reduced Lax functions. One of them is a generalization of Dubrovin and Zhang's trigonometric polynomial. The other is a transcendental function, the logarithm of which resembles the waterbag models of the dispersionless KP hierarchy. They both satisfy a radial version of the Löwner equations. Consistency of these Löwner equations yields a radial version of the Gibbons-T…
A family of polynomial τ-functions for the NLS-Toda hierarchy is constructed. The hierarchy is associated with the homogeneous vertex operator representation of the affine algebra \g of type A_1^{(1)}. These τ-functions are given explicitly in terms of Schur functions that correspond to rectangular Young diagrams. It is shown that an arbitrary polynomial τ-function which is an eigenvector of d, the degree operator of \g, is contained in the family. By the construction, any τ-function in the family becomes a Virasoro singular vector. This consideration gives rise to a simple proof of known resu…
In this paper, we derive the Fay-like identities of tau function for the Toda lattice hierarchy from the bilinear identity. We prove that the Fay-like identities are equivalent to the hierarchy. We also show that the dispersionless limit of the Fay-like identities are the dispersionless Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy.
The intermediate long wave (ILW) hierarchy and its generalization, labelled by a positive integer $N$, can be formulated as reductions of the lattice KP hierarchy. The integrability of the lattice KP hierarchy is inherited by these reduced systems. In particular, all solutions can be captured by a factorization problem of difference operators. A special solution among them is obtained from Okounkov and Pandharipande's dressing operators for the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of $\mathbb{CP}^1$. This indicates a hidden link with the equivariant Toda hierarchy. The generalized ILW hierarchy is…
Previous results on quasi-classical limit of the KP hierarchy and its W-infinity symmetries are extended to the Toda hierarchy. The Planck constant $\hbar$ now emerges as the spacing unit of difference operators in the Lax formalism. Basic notions, such as dressing operators, Baker-Akhiezer functions and tau function, are redefined. $W_{1+\infty}$ symmetries of the Toda hierarchy are realized by suitable rescaling of the Date-Jimbo-Kashiara-Miwa vertex operators. These symmetries are contracted to $w_{1+\infty}$ symmetries of the dispersionless hierarchy through their action on the tau functio…
Orbifold generalizations of the ordinary and modified melting crystal models are introduced. They are labelled by a pair $a,b$ of positive integers, and geometrically related to $\mathbf{Z}_a\times\mathbf{Z}_b$ orbifolds of local $\mathbf{CP}^1$ geometry of the $\mathcal{O}(0)\oplus\mathcal{O}(-2)$ and $\mathcal{O}(-1)\oplus\mathcal{O}(-1)$ types. The partition functions have a fermionic expression in terms of charged free fermions. With the aid of shift symmetries in a fermionic realization of the quantum torus algebra, one can convert these partition functions to tau functions of the 2D Toda…
We demonstrate that the generalization of the relativistic Toda chain (RTC) is a special reduction of two-dimensional Toda Lattice hierarchy (2DTL). We also show that the RTC is gauge equivalent to the discrete AKNS hierarchy and the unitary matrix model. Relativistic Toda molecule hierarchy is also considered, along with the forced RTC. The simple approach to the discrete RTC hierarchy based on Darboux-Bäcklund transformation is proposed.
We introduce and study a two-parameter family of symmetry reductions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy, which are characterized by a rational factorization of the Lax operator into a product of an upper diagonal and the inverse of a lower diagonal formal difference operator. They subsume and generalize several classical 1 + 1 integrable hierarchies, such as the bigraded Toda hierarchy, the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy and E. Frenkel's q-deformed Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. We establish their characterization in terms of block Toeplitz matrices for the associated factorization problem, an…
We present the Lax pair formalism for certain extension of the continuous limit of the classical Toda lattice hierarchy, provide a well defined notion of tau function for its solutions, and give an explicit formulation of the relationship between the $CP^1$ topological sigma model and the extended Toda hierarchy. We also establish an equivalence of the latter with certain extension of the nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy.
In this letter, we show that certain Fredholm determinant $D(λ;t)$, introduced by Zamolodchikov in his study of 2D polymers, is a continuum limit of soliton solution for the Toda lattice hierarchy with 2-periodic reduction condition.
A new integrable N=2 supersymmetric f-Toda mapping in (1|2) superspace, acting like the symmetry transformation of N=2 supersymmetric NLS hierarchy, is proposed. The first two Hamiltonian structures and the recursion operator connecting all evolution systems and Hamiltonian structures of the N=2 super-NLS hierarchy are constructed in explicit form using only invariance conditions with respect to the f-Toda mapping. A new representation for its Hamiltonians is observed.
The Toda lattice hierarchy is discussed in connection with the topological description of the $c=1$ string theory compactified at the self-dual radius. It is shown that when special constraints are imposed on the Toda hierarchy, it reproduces known results of the $c=1$ string theory, in particular the $W_{1+\infty}$ relations among tachyon correlation functions. These constraints are the analogues of string equations in the topological minimal theories. We also point out that at $c=1$ the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential becomes simply a $U(1)$ current operator.
We present a new realization of scalar integrable hierarchies in terms of the Toda lattice hierarchy. In other words, we show on a large number of examples that an integrable hierarchy, defined by a pseudodifferential Lax operator, can be embedded in the Toda lattice hierarchy. Such a realization in terms the Toda lattice hierarchy seems to be as general as the Drinfeld--Sokolov realization.
We apply an analogue of the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method to obtain infinite matrix solutions to the Toda lattice hierarchy. Using an operator transformation we convert some of these into solutions in terms of integral operators and Fredholm determinants. Others are converted into a class of operator solutions to the $l$-periodic Toda hierarchy.
We study the thermodynamic limit of random partition models for the instanton sum of 4D and 5D supersymmetric U(1) gauge theories deformed by some physical observables. The physical observables correspond to external potentials in the statistical model. The partition function is reformulated in terms of the density function of Maya diagrams. The thermodynamic limit is governed by a limit shape of Young diagrams associated with dominant terms in the partition function. The limit shape is characterized by a variational problem, which is further converted to a scalar-valued Riemann-Hilbert proble…
String equations of the $p$-th generalized Kontsevich model and the compactified $c = 1$ string theory are re-examined in the language of the Toda lattice hierarchy. As opposed to a hypothesis postulated in the literature, the generalized Kontsevich model at $p = -1$ does not coincide with the $c = 1$ string theory at self-dual radius. A broader family of solutions of the Toda lattice hierarchy including these models are constructed, and shown to satisfy generalized string equations. The status of a variety of $c \le 1$ string models is discussed in this new framework.
This paper addresses the issue of integrable structure in a modified melting crystal model of topological string theory on the resolved conifold. The partition function can be expressed as the vacuum expectation value of an operator on the Fock space of 2D complex free fermion fields. The quantum torus algebra of fermion bilinears behind this expression is shown to have an extended set of "shift symmetries". They are used to prove that the partition function (deformed by external potentials) is essentially a tau function of the 2D Toda hierarchy. This special solution of the 2D Toda hierarchy …
In a companion paper to this one, we proved that the Gromov--Witten theory of a Fano orbifold line of type $D$ is governed by a system of Hirota Bilinear Equations. The goal of this paper is to prove that every solution to the Hirota Bilinear Equations determines a solution to a new integrable hierarchy of Lax equations. We suggest the name extended D-Toda hierarchy for this new system of Lax equations, because it should be viewed as the analogue of Carlet's extended bi-graded Toda hierarchy, which is known to govern the Gromov--Witten theory of Fano orbifold lines of type $A$
A N=4 supersymmetric matrix KP hierarchy is proposed and a wide class of its reductions which are characterized by a finite number of fields are described. This class includes the one-dimensional reduction of the two-dimensional N=(2|2) superconformal Toda lattice hierarchy possessing the N=4 supersymmetry -- the N=4 Toda chain hierarchy -- which may be relevant in the construction of supersymmetric matrix models. The Lax pair representations of the bosonic and fermionic flows, corresponding local and nonlocal Hamiltonians, finite and infinite discrete symmetries, the first two Hamiltonian str…
The dispersionless Toda hierarchy turns out to lie in the heart of a recently proposed Landau-Ginzburg formulation of two-dimensional string theory at self-dual compactification radius. The dynamics of massless tachyons with discrete momenta is shown to be encoded into the structure of a special solution of this integrable hierarchy. This solution is obtained by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem. Equivalence to the tachyon dynamics is proven by deriving recursion relations of tachyon correlation functions in the machinery of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy. Fundamental ingredients of the Lan…
A pedagogical presentation of integrable models with special reference to the Toda lattice hierarchy has been attempted. The example of the KdV equation has been studied in detail, beginning with the infinite conserved quantities and going on to the Lax formalism for the same. We then go on to symplectic manifolds for which we construct the Lax operator. This formalism is applied to Toda Lattice systems. The Zakharov Shabat formalism aimed at encompassing all integrable models is also covered after which the zero curvature condition and its fallout are discussed. We then take up Toda Field The…
Based on the recent formulation of a general scheme to construct boundary Lax pairs,we develop this systematic construction for the $A_n^{(1)}$ affine Toda field theories (ATFT). We work out explicitly the first two models of the hierarchy, i.e. the sine-Gordon ($A_1^{(1)}$) and the $A_2^{(1)}$ models. The $A_2^{(1)}$ Toda theory is the first non-trivial example of the hierarchy that exhibits two distinct types of boundary conditions. We provide here novel expressions of boundary Lax pairs associated to both types of boundary conditions.
The origin of the bosonic and fermionic solutions, constructed in [1,2,3], to the symmetry equations corresponding to the two-dimensional bosonic and N=(2|2) supersymmetric Toda lattices is established, and algebras of the corresponding symmetries are derived. The conjecture regarding an N=(2|2) superfield formulation of the N=(2|2) supersymmetric Toda lattice hierarchy, proposed in [16], is proved. The two-dimensional N=(0|2) supersymmetric Toda lattice hierarchy is proposed and its N=(0|2) superfield formulation is discussed. Bosonic and fermionic solutions to the symmetry equation correspon…
The Laplacian growth problem in the limit of zero surface tension is proved to be equivalent to finding a particular solution to the dispersionless Toda lattice hierarchy. The hierarchical times are harmonic moments of the growing domain. The Laplacian growth equation itself is the quasiclassical version of the string equation that selects the solution to the hierarchy.
The prepotential of the effective N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory perturbed in the ultraviolet by the descendents of the single-trace chiral operators is shown to be a particular tau-function of the quasiclassical Toda hierarchy. In the case of noncommutative U(1) theory (or U(N) theory with 2N-2 fundamental hypermultiplets at the appropriate locus of the moduli space of vacua) or a theory on a single fractional D3 brane at the ADE singularity the hierarchy is the dispersionless Toda chain. We present its explicit solutions. Our results generalize the limit shape analysis of Logan-Schepp and Versh…
The quantum torus algebra plays an important role in a special class of solutions of the Toda hierarchy. Typical examples are the solutions related to the melting crystal model of topological strings and 5D SUSY gauge theories. The quantum torus algebra is realized by a 2D complex free fermion system that underlies the Toda hierarchy, and exhibits mysterious "shift symmetries". This article is based on collaboration with Toshio Nakatsu.
We demonstrate that the generalization of the relativistic Toda chain (RTC) is a special reduction of two-dimensional Toda Lattice hierarchy (2DTL). This reduction implies that the RTC is gauge equivalent to the discrete AKNS hierarchy and, which is the same, to the two-component Volterra hierarchy while its forced (semi-infinite) variant is described by the unitary matrix integral. The integrable properties of the RTC hierarchy are revealed in different frameworks of: Lax representation, orthogonal polynomial systems, and $τ$-function approach. Relativistic Toda molecule hierarchy is also con…
We represent the partition function of the Generalized Kontsevich Model (GKM) in the form of a Toda lattice $τ$-function and discuss various implications of non-vanishing "negative"- and "zero"-time variables: the appear to modify the original GKM action by negative-power and logarithmic contributions respectively. It is shown that so deformed $τ$-function satisfies the same string equation as the original one. In the case of quadratic potential GKM turns out to describe {\it forced} Toda chain hierarchy and, thus, corresponds to a {\it discrete} matrix model, with the role of the matrix size …
We consider a generalization of the full symmetric Toda hierarchy where the matrix $\tilde {L}$ of the Lax pair is given by $\tilde {L}=LS$, with a full symmetric matrix $L$ and a nondegenerate diagonal matrix $S$. The key feature of the hierarchy is that the inverse scattering data includes a class of noncompact groups of matrices, such as $O(p,q)$. We give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem of this hierarchy. The formula is obtained by generalizing the orthogonalization procedure of Szegö, or the QR factorization method of Symes. The behaviors of the solutions …
We show that there is a series of topological string theories whose integrable structure is described by the Toda lattice hierarchy. The monodromy group of the Frobenius manifold for the matter sector is an extension of the affine Weyl group $\widetilde W (A_N^{(1)})$ introduced by Dubrovin. These models are generalizations of the topological $CP^1$ string theory with scaling violation. The logarithmic Hamiltonians generate flows for the puncture operator and its descendants. We derive the string equation from the constraints on the Lax and the Orlov operators. The constraints are of different…
A construction of general solutions of the \hbar-dependent Toda hierarchy is presented. The construction is based on a Riemann-Hilbert problem for the pairs (L,M) and (\bar L,\bar M) of Lax and Orlov-Schulman operators. This Riemann-Hilbert problem is translated to the language of the dressing operators W and \bar W. The dressing operators are set in an exponential form as W = e^{X/\hbar} and \bar W = e^{ϕ/\hbar}e^{\bar X/\hbar}, and the auxiliary operators X,\bar X and the function ϕare assumed to have \hbar-expansions X = X_0 + \hbar X_1 + ..., \bar X = \bar X_0 + \hbar\bar X_1 + ... and ϕ= …
We explicitly construct the series expansion for a certain class of solutions to the 2D Toda hierarchy in the zero dispersion limit, which we call symmetric solutions. We express the Taylor coefficients through some universal combinatorial constants and find recurrence relations for them. These results are used to obtain new formulas for the genus 0 double Hurwitz numbers. They can also serve as a starting point for a constructive approach to the Riemann mapping problem and the inverse potential problem in 2D.
We show how the two--matrix model and Toda lattice hierarchy presented in a previous paper can be solved exactly: we obtain compact formulas for correlators of pure tachyonic states at every genus. We then extend the model to incorporate a set of discrete states organized in finite dimensional $sl_2$ representations. We solve also this extended model and find the correlators of the discrete states by means of the $W$ constraints and the flow equations. Our results coincide with the ones existing in the literature in those cases in which particular correlators have been explicitly calculated. W…
A continuum limit of the Toda lattice field theory, called the SDiff(2) Toda equation, is shown to have a Lax formalism and an infinite hierarchy of higher flows. The Lax formalism is very similar to the case of the self-dual vacuum Einstein equation and its hyper-Kähler version, however now based upon a symplectic structure and the group SDiff(2) of area preserving diffeomorphisms on a cylinder $S^1 \times \R$. An analogue of the Toda lattice tau function is introduced. The existence of hidden SDiff(2) symmetries are derived from a Riemann-Hilbert problem in the SDiff(2) group. Symmetries of …
A $q$-analogue of the tau function of the modified KP hierarchy is defined by a change of independent variables. This tau function satisfies a system of bilinear $q$-difference equations. These bilinear equations are translated to the language of wave functions, which turn out to satisfy a system of linear $q$-difference equations. These linear $q$-difference equations are used to formulate the Lax formalism and the description of quasi-classical limit. These results can be generalized to a $q$-analogue of the Toda hierarchy. The results on the $q$-analogue of the Toda hierarchy might have an …
