Recent work in the literature had evaluated the energy-momentum tensor of a Casimir apparatus in a weak gravitational field, for an electromagnetic field subject to perfect conductor boundary conditions on parallel plates. The Casimir apparatus was then predicted to experience a tiny push in the upwards direction, and the regularized energy-momentum tensor was found to have a trace anomaly. The latter, unexpected property made it compelling to assess what happens in a simpler case. For this purpose, the present paper studies a free, real massless scalar field subject to homogeneous Dirichlet conditions on the parallel plates. Working to first order in the constant gravity acceleration, the resulting regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor is found to be covariantly conserved, while the trace anomaly vanishes if the massless scalar field is conformally coupled to gravity. Conformal coupling also ensures a finite Casimir energy and finite values of the pressure upon parallel plates.
We consider a Casimir apparatus consisting of two perfectly conducting parallel plates, subject to the weak gravitational field of the Earth. The aim of this paper is the calculation of the energy-momentum tensor of this system for a free, real massless scalar field satisfying Neumann boundary conditions on the plates. The small gravity acceleration (here considered as not varying between the two plates) allows us to perform all calculations to first order in this parameter. Some interesting results are found: a correction, depending on the gravity acceleration, to the well-known Casimir energ…
We review and assess a part of the recent work on Casimir apparatuses in the weak gravitational field of the Earth. For a free, real massless scalar field subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on the parallel plates, the resulting regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor is covariantly conserved, while the trace anomaly vanishes if the massless field is conformally coupled to gravity. Conformal coupling also ensures a finite Casimir energy and finite values of the pressure upon parallel plates. These results have been extended to an electromagnetic field subject to per…
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. We use Fermi coordinates and work to first order in the constant acceleration parameter. A new simple formula for the trace anomaly is found to first order in the constant acceleration, and a more systematic derivation is therefore obtained of the theoretical prediction according to which the Casimir device in a weak gravitational field will experience a tiny push in the upwards direction.
We have recently demonstrated that Casimir energy due to parallel plates, including its divergent parts, falls like conventional mass in a weak gravitational field. The divergent parts were suitably interpreted as renormalizing the bare masses of the plates. Here we corroborate our result regarding the inertial nature of Casimir energy by calculating the centripetal force on a Casimir apparatus rotating with constant angular speed. We show that the centripetal force is independent of the orientation of the Casimir apparatus in a frame whose origin is at the center of inertia of the apparatus.
This paper derives a set of general relativistic Cardinal Equations for the equilibrium of an extended body in a uniform gravitational field. These equations are essential for a proper understanding of the mechanics of suspended relativistic systems. As an example, the prototypical case of a suspended vessel filled with radiation is discussed. The mechanics of Casimir apparatuses at rest in the gravitational field of the Earth is then considered. Starting from an expression for the Casimir energy-momentum tensor in a weak gravitational field recently derived by the authors, it is here shown th…
We address a problem of Casimir apparatus in dense medium and weak gravitational field. The falling of the apparatus has to be governed by the equivalence principle, with proper account for contributions to the weight of the apparatus from its material part and from distorted quantum fields. We discuss general expression for the corresponding force in metric with cylindrical symmetry. By way of example we compute explicit expression for Archimedes force, acting on the Casimir apparatus of finite size, immersed into thermal bath of free scalar field. It is shown that besides universal term, pro…
This paper studies two perfectly conducting parallel plates in the weak gravitational field on the surface of the Earth. Since the appropriate line element, to first order in the constant gravity acceleration g, is precisely of the Rindler type, we can exploit the formalism for studying Feynman Green functions in Rindler spacetime. Our analysis does not reduce the electromagnetic potential to the transverse part before quantization. It is instead fully covariant and well suited for obtaining all components of the regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor to arbitrary order in the gra…
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. A perturbative expansion, to first order in the constant acceleration parameter, of the Green functions involved and of the energy-momentum tensor is derived by means of the covariant geodesic point splitting procedure. The energy-momentum tensor is covariantly conserved and satisfies the expected relation between gauge-breaking and ghost parts.
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. We use Fermi coordinates and work to first order in the constant acceleration parameter. A perturbative expansion, to this order, of the Green functions involved and of the energy-momentum tensor is derived by means of the covariant geodesic point splitting procedure. In correspondence to the Green functions satisfying mixed and gauge-invariant boundary conditions, and Ward identities, the energy-momentum tensor is c…
We study the influence of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes on Casimir energy. We consider a massive scalar field and analyze its dependence on the apparatus orientation with respect to the dragging direction associated with such spaces. We show that, for an apparatus orientation not considered before in the literature, the Casimir energy can change its sign, producing a repulsive force. As applications, we analyze two specific metrics: one associated with a linear motion of a cylinder and a circular equatorial motion around a gravitational source described by Kerr geometry.
This paper investigates the Casimir Energy modifications due to the Lorentz-violating CPT-even contribution in an extension of the scalar QED. We have considered the complex scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions between two parallel plates separated by a small distance. An appropriate tensor parametrization allowed us to study the Casimir effect in three setups: isotropic, anisotropic parity-odd, and anisotropic parity-even. We have shown that the Lorentz-violating contributions promote increased Casimir energy for both the isotropic and anisotropic parity-odd configurations. H…
In this work, we consider a Casimir apparatus that is put into free fall (e.g., falling into a black hole). Working in 1+1D, we find that two main effects occur: First, the Casimir energy density experiences a tidal effect where negative energy is pushed toward the plates and the resulting force experienced by the plates is increased. Second, the process of falling is inherently nonequilibrium and we treat it as such, demonstrating that the Casimir energy density moves back and forth between the plates after being "dropped,'' with the force modulating in synchrony. In this way, the Casimir ene…
We calculate the finite vacuum energy density of the scalar and electromagnetic fields inside a Casimir apparatus made up of two conducting parallel plates in a general weak gravitational field. The metric of the weak gravitational field has a small deviation from flat spacetime inside the apparatus and we find it by expanding the metric in terms of small parameters of the weak background. We show that the found metric can be transformed via a gauge transformation to the Fermi metric. We solve the Klein-Gordon equation exactly and find mode frequencies in Fermi spacetime. Using the fact that t…
We discuss various approaches to extracting the full stress-energy tensor of the conformal field theory from the corresponding supergravity solutions, within the framework of the Maldacena conjecture. This provides a more refined probe of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We apply these techniques in considering the Casimir energy of the conformal field theory on a torus. It seems that either generically the corresponding supergravity solutions are singular (i.e., involve regions of large string-scale curvatures), or that they are largely insensitive to the boundary conditions of the CFT on the toru…
The energy-momentum tensor for a massless conformally coupled scalar field in de Sitter spacetime in the presence of a couple curved branes is investigated. We assume that the scalar field satisfies the Robin boundary condition on the surfaces. Static de Sitter space is conformally related to the Rindler space, as a result we can obtain vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor for conformally invariant field in static de Sitter space from the corresponding Rindler counterpart by the conformal transformation.
Vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field is investigated in de Sitter (dS) spacetime in presence of a curved brane on which the field obeys the Robin boundary condition with coordinate dependent coefficients. To generate the corresponding vacuum densities we use the conformal relation between dS and Rindler spacetimes and the results previously obtained by one of the authors for the Rindler counterpart. The resulting energy-momentum tensor is non-diagonal and induces anisotropic vacuum stresses. The asymptotic behaviour of this tensor is in…
The stress tensor of a massless scalar field satisfying Robin boundary conditions on two one-dimensional wall in two-dimensional Schwarzschild background is calculated. We show that vacuum expectation value of stress tensor can be obtained explicitly by Casimir effect, trace anomaly and Hawking radiation.
The Casimir energy for scalar field of two parallel conductor in two dimensional domain wall background, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, is calculated by making use of general properties of renormalized stress tensor. We show that vacuum expectation values of stress tensor contain two terms which come from the boundary conditions and the gravitational background. In two dimensions the minimal coupling reduces to the conformal coupling and stress tensor can be obtained by the local and non-local contribution of the anomalous trace. This work shows that there exists a subtle relation between …
The Casimir energy for massless scalar field of two parallel conductor, in two dimensional Schwarzchild black hole background, with Dirichlet boundary conditions is calculated by making use of general properties of renormalized stress tensor. We show that vacuum expectation value of stress tensor can be obtain by Casimir effect, trace anomaly and Hawking radiation. Four-dimensional of this problem, by this method, is under progress by this author.
The trace identity associated with the scale transformation $x^μ\tox'{}^μ= e^{-ρ}x^μ$ on the Lagrangian density for the noninteracting electromagnetic field in the covariant gauge is shown to be violated on a single plate on which the Dirichlet boundary condition $A^μ(t,x^1,x^2,x^3=-a) = 0$ is imposed. It is however respected in free space,i.e. in the absence of the plate; these results reinforce our assertions in an earlier paper where the same exercise was carried out using the Lagrangian density for the free, massive, real scalar field in 2 + 1 dimensions.
We study the general form of the Casimir interaction between two flat finite-width, parallel, infinite mirrors, described by their respective vacuum polarization tensors, under the assumption of translation invariance along the directions parallel to the planes of the mirrors. Their properties along the normal coordinates are left, on the other hand, rather arbitrary, but constrained by the Ward identity for the vacuum polarization tensors. We construct solutions to those identities, evaluating the corresponding Casimir energy of the system by reducing the problem to a collection of one-dimens…
We consider gauge theories based on abelian $p-$forms on real compact hyperbolic spaces. Using the zeta-function regularization method and the trace tensor kernel formula, we determine explicitly an expression for the vacuum energy (Casimir energy) corresponding to skew-symmetric tensor fields. It is shown that the topological component of the Casimir energy for co-exact forms on even-dimensional spaces, associated with the trivial character, is always negative. We infer on the possible cosmological consequences of this result.
By the thermofield dynamics (TFD) formalism we obtain the energy-momentum tensor for the Electromagnetism with Lorentz Breaking Even term of the Standard Model Extended (SME) Sector in a topology $S^{1}\times S^{1}\times R^{2}$. We carry out the compactification by a generalized TFD-Bogoliubov transformation that is used to define a renormalized energy-momentum tensor, and the Casimir energy and pressure at finite temperature are then derived. A comparative analysis with the electromagnetic case is developed, and we remark the influence of the background in the traditional Casimir effect.
In this paper we investigate the vacuum expectation values of energy- momentum tensor for conformally coupled scalar field in the standard parallel plate geometry with Dirichlet boundary conditions and on background of planar domain wall case. First we calculate the vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor by using the mode sums, then we show that corresponding properties can be obtained by using the conformal properties of the problem. The vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor contains two terms which come from the boundary conditions and the the gravitational backgro…
We use the thermofield dynamics (TFD) formalism to obtain the energy-momentum tensor for the Kalb-Ramond (KR) field in a topology $% S^{1}\times S^{1}\times R^{2}$. The compactification is carried out by a generalized TFD-Bogoliubov transformation that is used to define a renormalized energy-momentum tensor. The expressions for the Casimir energy and pressure at finite temperature are then derived. A comparative analysis with the electromagnetic case is developed, and the results may be important for applications, as in cuprate superconductivity, for instance.
The energy-momentum tensor for the gravitoelectromagnetism (GEM) theory in the real-time finite temperature field theory formalism is presented. Expressions for the Casimir energy and pressure at zero and finite temperature are obtained. An analysis of the Casimir effect for the GEM field is developed.
In this paper we study the Casimir effect for conformally coupled massless scalar fields on background of Static dS$_{4+1}$ spacetime. We will consider the general plane--symmetric solutions of the gravitational field equations and boundary conditions of the Dirichlet type on the branes. Then we calculate the vacuum energy-momentum tensor in a configuration in which the boundary branes are moving by uniform proper acceleration in static de Sitter background. Static de Sitter space is conformally related to the Rindler space, as a result we can obtain vacuum expectation values of energy-momentu…
The Casimir operators of a Lie algebra are in one-to-one correspondence with the symmetric invariant tensors of the algebra. There is an infinite family of Casimir operators whose members are expressible in terms of a number of primitive Casimirs equal to the rank of the underlying group. A systematic derivation is presented of a complete set of identities expressing non-primitive symmetric tensors in terms of primitive tensors. Several examples are given including an application to an exceptional Lie algebra.
Using trace anomalies, we determine the vacuum stress tensors of arbitrary even dimensional conformal field theories in Weyl flat backgrounds. We demonstrate a simple relation between the Casimir energy on the real line times a sphere and the type A anomaly coefficient. This relation generalizes earlier results in two and four dimensions. These field theory results for the Casimir are shown to be consistent with holographic predictions in two, four, and six dimensions.
We apply the quasi-local stress-energy tensor formalism to the Casimir effect of a scalar field confined between conducting planes located in a static spacetime. We show that the surface energy vanishes for both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions and consequently the volume Casimir energy reduces to the famous zero point energy of the quantum field, i.e. $E^{vol.}=\sum\frac{\hbar ω}{2}$. This enables us to reinforce previous results in the literature and extend the calculations to the case of massive and arbitrarily coupled scalar field. We found that there exists a first order perturba…
Vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and the Casimir forces are evaluated for scalar and electromagnetic fields in the geometry of two curved boundaries on background of the Robertson-Walker spacetime with negative spatial curvature. Robin boundary conditions are imposed in the case of the scalar field and perfect conductor boundary conditions are assumed for the electromagnetic field. We use the conformal relation between the Robertson-Walker and Rindler spacetimes and the corresponding results for two parallel plates moving with uniform proper acceleration through the Full…
The Casimir forces on two parallel plates in conformally flat domain wall background due to conformally coupled massless scalar field satisfying mixed boundary conditions on the plates is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries.
The Casimir energy for massless scalar field which satisfies priodic boundary conditions in two-dimensional domain wall background is calculated by making use of general properties of renormalized stress-tensor. The line element of domain wall is time dependent, the trace anomaly which is the nonvanishing $T^μ_μ$ for a conformally invariant field after renormalization, represent the back reaction of the dynamical Casimir effect.
We develop the worldline formalism for computations of composite operators such as the fluctuation induced energy-momentum tensor. As an example, we use a fluctuating real scalar field subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. The resulting worldline representation can be evaluated by worldline Monte-Carlo methods in continuous spacetime. We benchmark this worldline numerical algorithm with the aid of analytically accessible single-plate and parallel-plate Casimir configurations, providing a detailed analysis of statistical and systematic errors. The method generalizes straightforwardly to arb…
In a recent paper [arXiv:0904.2904] using a conjecture it is shown how one can calculate the effect of a weak stationary gravitational field on vacuum energy in the context of Casimir effect in an external gravitational field treated in 1+3 formulation of spacetime decomposition.. In this article, employing quntum field theory in curved spacetime, we explicitly calculate the effect of a weak static gravitational field on virtual massless scalar particles in a Casimir apparatus. It is shown that, as expected from the proposed conjecture, both the frequency and renormalized energy of the virtual…
The CPT-even sector of the standard model extension amounts to extending Maxwell electrodynamics by a gauge invariant term of the form $- \frac{1}{4} (k _{F}) _{αβμν} F ^{αβ} F ^{μν}$, where the Lorentz-violating (LV) background tensor $(k _{F}) _{αβμν}$ possesses the symmetries of the Riemann tensor. The electrodynamics in ponderable media is still described by Maxwell equations in matter with modified constitutive relations which depend on the coefficients for Lorentz violation. We study the effects of this theory on the Casimir force between two semi-infinite ponderable media. The Fresnel c…
A detailed investigation is presented of the energy-momentum tensor approach to the evaluation of the force acting on a rigid Casimir cavity in a weak gravitational field. Such a force turns out to have opposite direction with respect to the gravitational acceleration. The order of magnitude for a multi-layer cavity configuration is derived and experimental feasibility is discussed, taking into account current technological resources.
A spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background with a general scale factor is considered. In this space-time, the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field with a general curvature coupling parameter is obtained. Using the Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism the Stefan-Boltzmann law and the Casimir effect at finite temperature are calculated. The Casimir effect at zero temperature is also considered. The expansion of the universe changes these effects. A discussion of these modifications is presented.
Recent work in the literature has studied rigid Casimir cavities in a weak gravitational field, or in de Sitter spacetime, or yet other spacetime models. The present review paper studies the difficult problem of direct evaluation of scalar Green functions for a Casimir-type apparatus in de Sitter spacetime. Working to first order in the small parameter of the problem, i.e. twice the gravity acceleration times the plates' separation divided by the speed of light in vacuum, suitable coordinates are considered for which the differential equations obeyed by the zeroth- and first-order Green functi…
In this paper, we study the electromagnetic Casimir effects in the context of Lorentz symmetry violations. Two distinct approaches are considered: the first one is based on Horava-Lifshitz methodology, which explicitly presents a space-time anisotropy, while the second is a model that includes higher-derivatives in the field strength tensor and a preferential direction in the space-time. We assume that the electromagnetic field obeys the standard boundary conditions on two large parallel plates. Our main objectives are to investigate how the Casimir energy and pressure are modified in both Lor…
In the AdS/CFT description of four-dimensional QCD matter undergoing Bjorken expansion, does the holographic energy-momentum tensor contain a Casimir-type contribution that should not be attributed to thermal matter? When the bulk isometry ansatz that yielded such a Casimir term for (1+1)-dimensional boundary matter is generalised to a four-dimensional boundary, we show that a Casimir term does not arise, owing to singularities in the five-dimensional bulk solution. The geometric reasons are traced to a difference between the isometries of AdS_3 and AdS_{d+1} for d>=3.
The vacuum expectation value of the surface energy-momentum tensor is evaluated for a scalar field obeying Robin boundary condition on a spherical brane in (D+1)-dimensional spacetime $Ri\times S^{D-1}$, where $Ri$ is a two-dimensional Rindler spacetime. The generalized zeta function technique is used in combination with the contour integral representation. The surface energies on separate sides of the brane contain pole and finite contributions. Analytic expressions for both these contributions are derived. For an infinitely thin brane in odd spatial dimensions, the pole parts cancel and the …
The Casimir forces on two parallel plates in conformally flat de Sitter background due to conformally coupled massless scalar field satisfying mixed boundary conditions on the plates is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. Different cosmological constants are assumed for the space between and outside of the plates to have general results applicable to the case of domain wall formations in the early universe.
In this paper, we calculate the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless conformally coupled scalar field in the background of a conformally flat brane-world geometries, where the scalar field satisfying Robin boundary conditions on two parallel plates. In the general case of Robin boundary conditions formula are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor. Further the surface energy per unit area are obtained . As an application of the general formula we have considered the important special case of the AdS$_{4+1}$ bulk, moreover application to the Randall-Sun…
We show that the Casimir force and energy are modified in the kappa-deformed space-time. This is analysed by solving the Green's function corresponding to kappa-deformed scalar field equation in presence of two parallel plates, modelled by delta-function potentials. Exploiting the relation between energy-momentum tensor and Green's function, we calculate the correction to Casimir force, valid up to second order in the deformation parameter. The Casimir force is shown to get corrections which scale as $L^{-4}$ and $L^{-6}$ and both these types of corrections produce attractive forces. Using the…
The wedge geometry closed by a circular-cylindrical arc is a nontrivial generalization of the cylinder, which may have various applications. If the radial boundaries are not perfect conductors, the angular eigenvalues are only implicitly determined. When the speed of light is the same on both sides of the wedge, the Casimir energy is finite, unlike the case of a perfect conductor, where there is a divergence associated with the corners where the radial planes meet the circular arc. We advance the study of this system by reporting results on the temperature dependence for the conducting situati…
The Casimir effect due to conformally coupled bulk scalar fields on background of conformally flat brane-world geometries is investigated. In the general case of mixed boundary conditions formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. The special case of the AdS bulk is considered and the application to the Randall-Sundrum scenario is discussed. The possibility for the radion stabilization by the vacuum forces is demonstrated.
Calculations of the Casimir energy for spherical geometries which are based on integrations of the stress tensor are critically examined. It is shown that despite their apparent agreement with numerical results obtained from mode summation methods, they contain a number of serious errors. Specifically, these include (1) an improper application of the stress tensor to spherical boundaries, (2) the neglect of pole terms in contour integrations, and (3) the imposition of inappropriate boundary conditions upon the relevant propagators. A calculation which is based on the stress tensor and which av…
The Casimir stress on a cylinderical shell in background of conformally flat space-time for massless scalar field is investigated. In the general case of Robin (mixed) boundary condition formulae are derived for the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and vacuum forces acting on boundaries. The special case of the dS bulk is considered then different cosmological constants are assumed for the space inside and outside of the shell to have general results applicable to the case of cylindrical domain wall formations in the early universe.
We show that if one chooses the Einstein Static Universe as the metric on the conformal boundary of Kerr-AdS spacetime, then the Casimir energy of the boundary conformal field theory can easily be determined. The result is independent of the rotation parameters, and the total boundary energy then straightforwardly obeys the first law of thermodynamics. Other choices for the metric on the conformal boundary will give different, more complicated, results. As an application, we calculate the Casimir energy for free self-dual tensor multiplets in six dimensions, and compare it with that of the sev…
The Dirac field, spin 1/2 particles, is investigated in phase space. The Dirac propagator is defined. The Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism is used to introduce finite temperature. The energy-momentum tensor is calculated at finite temperature. The Stefan-Boltzmann law is established and the Casimir effect is calculated for the Dirac field in phase space at zero and finite temperature. A comparative analysis with these results in standard quantum mechanics space is realized.
A tensor extension of the Poincaré algebra is proposed for the arbitrary dimensions. Casimir operators of the extension are constructed. A possible supersymmetric generalization of this extension is also found in the dimensions $D=2,3,4$.
Recently a great deal of interest in field theories formulated in a Lorentz violating framework has been developed. Here the Very Special Relativity (VSR) is considered. The main aspect in the VSR proposal is that laws of physics are invariant under the subgroups of the Poincaré group preserving the basic elements of special relativity. An important point is that the photon acquires a mass. In this context, the energy-momentum tensor for the electromagnetic field is calculated. From this, the Stefan-Boltzmann law and Casimir effect at finite temperature in VSR are obtained. The effects of temp…
