We use the thermofield dynamics (TFD) formalism to obtain the energy-momentum tensor for the Kalb-Ramond (KR) field in a topology $% S^{1}\times S^{1}\times R^{2}$. The compactification is carried out by a generalized TFD-Bogoliubov transformation that is used to define a renormalized energy-momentum tensor. The expressions for the Casimir energy and pressure at finite temperature are then derived. A comparative analysis with the electromagnetic case is developed, and the results may be important for applications, as in cuprate superconductivity, for instance.
A detailed Hamiltonian analysis for a five-dimensional Kalb-Ramond, massive Kalb-Ramond and St{ü}eckelberg Kalb-Ramond theories with a compact dimension is performed. We develop a complete constraint program, then we quantize the theory by constructing the Dirac brackets. From the gauge transformations of the theories, we fix a particular gauge and we find pseudo-Goldstone bosons in Kalb-Ramond and St{ü}eckelberg Kalb-Ramond's effective theories. Finally we discuss some remarks and prospects.
In this paper we investigate whether spacetime torsion induced by a Kalb-Ramond field in a string inspired background can generate a mass for the left-handed neutrino. We consider an Einstein-Dirac-Kalb-Ramond lagrangian in higher dimensional spacetime with torsion generated by the Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric field in the presence of a bulk fermion. We show that such a coupling can generate a mass term for the four dimensional neutrino after a suitable large radius compactification of the extra dimensions.
Matrix and tensor formulations of the relativistic wave equation providing description both an electromagnetic field (photon) and a massless Kalb-Ramond field with the zero helicity (notoph) are given. It is shown that this equation is a particular case of the Dirac-Kahler system.
We present the noncommutative extention of the U(N) Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond theory, displaying its differential form and gauge structures. The Seiberg-Witten map of the model is also constructed up to $0(θ^2)$.
In this work we present a dual mapping between the Kalb-Ramond and antisymmetric tensor matter (ATM) field actions. Our procedure shows that the correlation functions associated with both the Noether current and the topological current are equivalent.
The Kalb-Ramond action for an interacting string is generalized to the case of a high-dimensional object (p-brane). The interaction is found to be mediated by a gauge boson of a completely antisymmetric tensor of rank $p+1$.
We show that the rank reduction of the gauge group on orientifolds in presence of non vanishing discrete Kalb-Ramond field can be explained by the presence of an induced field strength in a non trivial bundle on the branes. This field strength is also necessary for the tadpole cancellation and the number of branes is left unchanged by the presence of the discrete Kalb-Ramond background.
The emergence of a Kalb-Ramond field and string charge in the lattice is discussed. The local bosonic model with rotor variables placed on the faces of a cubic lattice is considered. The coupling model consisting of the Maxwell fields and the Kalb-Ramond field is given. This construction naturally incorporates the emerging coupling between both gauge and string fields. In the process, an object that resembles to a D-brane on the lattice is introduced.
In this work we explore the geodesic deviations of spinning test particles in a string inspired Einstein-Kalb Ramond background. Such a background is known to be equivalent to a spacetime geometry with torsion. We have shown here that the antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field has significant effect on the geodesic deviation of a spinning test particle. A search for an observational evidence of such an effect in astrophysical experiments may lead to a better undestanding of the geometry of the background spacetime.
The Ernst-like matrix representation of the multidimensional Einstein-Kalb-Ramond theory is developed and the O(d,d)-symmetry is presented in the matrix-valued SL(2,R)-form. The analogy with the Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion theories is discussed.
We have developed dualization of ordinary and ``Stueckelberg compensated'' massive phase for the Kalb-Ramond theory. The compensated phase allows to study the interplay between spin jumping and duality. We show that spin jumping is caused by mass, while gauge symmetry is not necessary for this effect to take place.
We present here a manifestly gauge invariant calculation of vacuum polarization to fermions in the presence of a constant Maxwell and a constant Kalb-Ramond field in four dimensions. The formalism is a generalisation of the one used by Schwinger in his famous paper on gauge invariance and vacuum polarization. We get an explicit expression for the vacuum polarization induced effective Lagrangian for a constant Maxwell field interacting with a constant Kalb-Ramond field. In the weak field limit we get the coupling between the Maxwell field and the Kalb-Ramond field to be $(\tilde{H}.\tilde{F})^2…
The Kalb-Ramond monopole, as discussed by Nepomechie, is identical with the (singular) Dirac monopole in d=3 dimensions. The latter can be described by the (regular) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, via the 't Hooft tensor construction. This construction is extended to arbitrary odd dimensions by performing the d=5 case explicitly, exploiting the (regular) `monopoles' of generalised Georgi-Glashow models and identifying their 't Hooft tensors as the Kalb-Ramond fields. The relevant `magnetic charges' are expressed as topological invariants.
We show that the fact that the string theory is unoriented does not necessarily force the Kalb-Ramond field to vanish. We investigated the theory of the open string propagating in the weakly curved background. The effective Kalb-Ramond field $B^{eff}_{μν}$, the background field of the effective theory obtained on the solution of the boundary conditions, does not depend on the $Ω$-even effective coordinate $q$, but on its T-dual $\tilde{q}$ which is $Ω$-odd. This brakes the standard proof that the term with $B_{μν}^{eff}$ should vanish. From the world-sheet equations of motion we identify $B_{μ…
Because of its versatility, the 2-form field has been employed to describe a multitude of scenarios that range from high energy to condensed matter physics. Pushing forward in this endeavor we study the interaction energy, intermediated by this kind of field, between branes in a variety of configurations. Also, the so-called Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond model, which consists of the electromagnetic field coupled to the Kalb-Ramond gauge potential, is considered. It turns out that these models exhibit a much richer class of sources than usually thought, able to intermediate novel forms of interact…
We study symmetry of space-time in presence of a minimally coupled scalar field interacting with a Kalb--Ramond tensor fields in a homogeneous but initially anisotropic universe. The analysis is performed for the two relevant cases of a pure cosmological constant and a minimal quadratic, renormalizable, interaction term. In both cases, due to expansion, a complete spatial symmetry restoration is dynamically obtained.
In this work we show that the Universe evolving in a spacetime with torsion (originated from a second rank antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field) and dilaton is free from any big bang singularity and can have acceleration during the evolution. Both the matter and radiation dominated era have been considered and the role of the dilaton to explain the decelerating phase in the earlier epoch has also been discussed.
The Kähler formulation of 5-dimensional Einstein-Kalb-Ramond (EKR) theory admitting two commuting Killing vectors is presented. Three different Kramer-Neugebauer-like maps are established for the 2-dimensional case. A class of solutions constructed on the double Ernst one is obtained. It is shown that the double Kerr solution corresponds to a EKR dipole configuration with horizon.
In this work, we propose a model based on a non-minimal coupling of neutrinos to a Kalb-Ramond field. The latter is taken as a possible source for gravitational radiation. As an immediate illustration of this system, we have studied the case where gravitational (plane) wave solutions behave as damped harmonic oscillators.
In this paper, we investigate the localization of the Kalb-Ramond field on symmetric and asymmetric thick branes, which are generated by a background scalar field. In order to localize the Kalb-Ramond field, we introduce a coupling with the background scalar field, and find that there exist some Kaluza-Klein resonant modes. For the case of symmetric brane, we seek the resonances by using the relative probability method and transfer matrix method, and obtain the same result for the two methods. For the asymmetric case, we use the transfer matrix method. We find that the number of resonances wil…
The effects of introducing a harmonic spatial inhomogeneity into the Kalb-Ramond field, interacting with the Maxwell field according to a `string-inspired' proposal made in earlier work are investigated. We examine in particular the effects on the polarization of synchrotron radiation from cosmologically distant (i.e. of redshift greater than 2) galaxies, as well as the relation between the electric and magnetic components of the radiation field. The rotation of the polarization plane of linearly polarized radiation is seen to acquire an additional contribution proportional to the square of th…
The mechanism of dynamical mass generation for the gauge field is studied through 1-loop. We find out that torsion is an obstruction to the appearance of a 1-loop mass correction. Contrary, if torsion is not present, a mass gap is generated for the 2-form field.
Static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein--Kalb--Ramond (KR) field equations are obtained. Besides an earlier known exact solution, we also find an approximate, asymptotically flat solution for which the metric coefficients are obtained as an infinte series in $\frac{1}{r}$. Subsequently, we study gravitational lensing and perihelion precession in these spacetimes and obtain explicit formulae which include corrections to these effects in the presence of the KR field.
We apply the boundary state method and operator formalism to obtain tree-level scattering amplitude of the Kalb-Ramond state from a D$p$-brane. The brane has a tangential dynamics, and it has been dressed by the antisymmetric tensor field, a $U(1)$ internal gauge potential and an open string tachyon field. By using the scattering amplitudes we acquire two DBI-like actions corresponding to the target branes. Our calculations are in the framework of the bosonic string theory.
Following up on a recent paper by two of us (DM and SS), demonstrating the large enhancement in observable optical activity in radiation from high redshift sources arising from the string-based coupling of bulk Kalb-Ramond field to the Maxwell Chern Simons three-form on the brane in a Randall-Sundrum braneworld, we exhibit here a similar enhancement in parity-violating temperature-polarization correlations, yet unseen, in the CMB anisotropy due to a generalized parity-violating Kalb-Ramond axion-photon interaction proposed earlier by one of us (PM). The non-observation of such correlations in …
The (3+d)-dimensional Einstein-Kalb-Ramond theory reduced to two dimensions is considered. It is shown that the theory allows two different Ernst-like $d \times d$ matrix formulations: the real non-dualized target space and the Hermitian dualized non-target space ones. The O(d, d) symmetry is written in a SL(2,R) matrix-valued form in both cases. The Kramer-Neugebauer transformation, which algebraically maps the non-dualized Ernst potential into the dualized one, is presented.
It is shown that the canonical quantization of the free massive Kalb-Ramond and Curtright-Freund Lagrangians leads to the same theory obtained from the canonical quantization of the free Proca and Klein-Gordon Lagrangians. The duality in the presence of interaction is explored in the context of the Feynman rules and beyond. It is pointed out that the equivalence between massive dual models without gauge symmetry is rooted in an ambiguity of coordinate choices.
Topological euclidean gravity is built in eight dimensions for manifolds with $Spin(7) \subset SO(8)$ holonomy. In a previous work, we considered the construction of an eight-dimensional topological theory describing the graviton and one graviphoton. Here we solve the question of determining a topological model for the combined system of a metric and a Kalb--Ramond two-form gauge field. We then recover the complete $N=1, D=8$ supergravity theory in a twisted form. We observe that the generalized self-duality conditions of our model correspond to the octonionic string equations.
We consider models with N U(1) gauge fields A_μ^n, N Kalb-Ramond fields B_{μν}^n, an arbitrary bare action and a fixed UV cutoff Λ. Under mild assumptions these can be obtained as effective low energy theories of SU(N+1) Yang Mills theories in the maximal abelian gauge. For a large class of bare actions they can be solved in the large N limit and exhibit confinement. The confining phase is characterized by an approximate ``low energy'' vector gauge symmetry under which the Kalb-Ramond fields B_{μν}^n transform. The same symmetry allows for a duality transformation showing that magnetic monopol…
In this work we calculate the functional generator of the Green's functions of the Kalb-Ramond field in 3+1 dimensions. We also calculate the functional generator, and corresponding Casimir energy, of the same field when it is submitted to boundary conditions on two parallel planes. The boundary conditions we consider can be interpreted as a kind of conducting planes for the field in compearing with the Maxwell case. We compare our result with the standard ones for the scalar and Maxwell fields.
We present a model in which a 3-brane is embedded in a warped 5-dimensional background with a dilaton and a Kalb-Ramond 2-form. We show that it is possible to find static solutions of the form of charged dS/AdS-like black hole which could have a negative mass parameter. The motion of the 3-brane in this bulk generates an effective 4-dimensional bouncing cosmology induced by the negative dark radiation term. This model avoids the instabilities that arises for previous non-singular braneworld cosmologies in a Reissner-Nordstrøm-AdS bulk.}
We have considered the most general gauge invariant five-dimensional action of a second rank antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond tensor gauge theory, including a topological term of the form $ε^{ABLMN}B_{AB}H_{LMN}$ in a Randall-Sundrum scenario. Such a tensor field $B_{AB}$ (whose rank-3 field strength tensor is $H_{LMN}$), which appears in the massless sector of a heterotic string theory, is assumed to coexist with the gravity in the bulk. The third rank field strength corresponding to the Kalb-Ramond field has a well-known geometric interpretation as the spacetime torsion. The only non-trivial classi…
Recently we have shown that a phase transition occurs in the leading approximation of the large N limit in rigid strings coupled to long range Kalb-Ramond interactions. The disordered phase is essentially the Nambu-Goto-Polyakov string theory while the ordered phase is a new theory. In this part II letter we study the first sub-leading quantum corrections we started in I. We derive the renormalized mass gap equation and obtain the renormalized critical line of the interacting theory. Our main and final result is that the phase transition does indeed survive quantum fluctuations.
A modification of the standard product used in local field theory by means of an associative deformed product is proposed. We present a class of deformed products, one for every spin S=0,1/2,1, that induces a nonlocal theory, displaying different form for different fields. This type of deformed product is naturally supersymmetric and it has an intriguing duality.
Recently we have shown that a phase transition occurs in the leading approximation of the large N limit in rigid strings coupled to long range Kalb-Ramond interactions. The disordered phase is essentially the Nambu-Goto-Polyakov string theory while The ordered phase is a new theory. In this part I letter we study the first sub-leading quantum corrections of the free rigid string and derive the renormalization group equation. We show that the theory is asymptotically free, thus the extrinsic curvature of the string drops out at large distance scales in the disordered phase. In part II we genera…
We consider the low-energy effective action of the 5D Einstein-Maxwell-Kalb-Ramond theory. After compactifying this truncated model on a two-torus and switching off the U(1) vector fields of this theory, we recall a formulation of the resulting three-dimensional action as a double Ernst system coupled to gravity. Further, by applying the so-called normalized Harrison transformation on a generic solution of this double Ernst system we recover the U(1) vector field sector of the theory. Afterward, we compute the field content of the generated charged configuration for the special case when the s…
We propose to develop the Kalb-Ramond theory in four-dimensional spacetime at the level of a classical field theory by following the same formal development steps as in Maxwell theory of standard electrodynamics. Solutions of Kalb-Ramond theory in the presence of static sources in various curved spacetimes are then analyzed. A question that we address here is that of a possible Kalb-Ramond polarization in curved spacetimes, like one can encounter a dielectric polarization in ordinary Maxwell electrodynamics in certain types of spacetimes.
In this work we investigate a braneworld scenario where a Kalb-Ramond field propagates, together with gravity, in a five dimensional AdS slice. The rank-2 Kalb-Ramond field is associated with torsion. We study the compactification of the Kalb-Ramond field to four dimensional space-time without gauge fixing, focusing on the effects of torsion. On the brane the Kalb-Ramond field interacts with $A_μ$-gauge and scalar matter fields. We analyze the propagators of this theory and as an application investigate the consistency of such a model in the presence of a cosmic string configuration. One inter…
We make an analysis about several aspects of localization of the Kalb-Ramond gauge field in a specific four dimensional AdS membrane embedded in a five dimensional space-time. The membrane is generated from a deformation of the $λϕ^4$ potential and belongs to a new class of defect solutions. In this context we find resonance structures in the analysis of massive modes. The study of deformed defects is important because they contain internal structures and these may have implications to the way the background space-time is constructed and the way its curvature behaves. The main objective here i…
We study the behavior of the scattering amplitudes of the bosonic string involving a soft massless state (graviton, dilaton and Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric tensor) and closed string tachyons or other closed string massless states. For a soft graviton we confirm the results, obtained in Ref. [24] using just gauge invariance, up to terms of ${\cal O}(q^1)$ for external tachyons and up to terms of ${\cal O} (q^0)$ for external massless closed string states. Furthermore, we also derive the behavior of the scattering amplitude when a dilaton or a Kalb-Ramond field becomes soft. These results are new …
We have derived the Buchdahl's limit for a relativistic star in presence of the Kalb-Ramond field in four as well as in higher dimensions. It turns out that the Buchdahl's limit gets severely affected by the inclusion of the Kalb-Ramond field. In particular, the Kalb-Ramond field in four spacetime dimensions enables one to pack extra mass in any compact stellar structure of a given radius. On the other hand, a completely opposite picture emerges if the Kalb-Ramond field exists in higher dimensions, where the mass content of a compact star is smaller compared to that in general relativity. Impl…
In this work we investigate the quantum theory of the Kalb-Ramond fields propagating in $D-$dimensional de Sitter spacetimes using the dynamic invariant method developed by Lewis and Riesenfeld [J. Math. Phys. 10, 1458 (1969)] to obtain the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The wave function is written in terms of a $c-$number quantity satisfying of the Milne-Pinney equation, whose solution can be expressed in terms of two independent solutions of the respective equation of motion. We obtain the exact solution for the quantum Kalb-Ramond field in the de Sitter background and…
We present the general form of the operators that lift the group action on the twisted sectors of a bosonic string on an orbifold ${\cal M}/G$, in the presence of a Kalb-Ramond field strength $H$. These operators turn out to generate the quasi-quantum group $D_ω[G]$, introduced in the context of orbifold conformal field theory by R. Dijkgraaf, V. Pasquier and P. Roche. The 3-cocycle $ω$ entering in the definition of $D_ω[G]$ is related to $H$ by a series of cohomological equations in a tricomplex combining de Rham, Cech and group coboundaries. We construct magnetic amplitudes for the twisted s…
We obtain a static spherically symmetric wormhole solution due to the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a Kalb-Ramond field. The Kalb-Ramond VEV is a background tensor field which produces a local Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) of spacetime. Considering a non-minimal coupling between the Kalb-Ramond (VEV) and the Ricci tensor, we found an exact traversable wormhole solution sustained by matter sources with a negative isotropic pressure. The matter source satisfies the energy conditions at the throat for particular choices of the LSB parameter. Moreover, we employ the Gauss-Bonnet method to an…
In this letter we derive the Cornell confining potential in a theory of interacting Abelian gauge vector and massive Kalb-Ramond tensor. The Kalb-Ramond mass is instrumental to obtain the linear confining behavior of the potential at large distances. The same model can be described via interaction with Higgs fields, alternatively, providing mass to the vector, or to the tensor fields. In the first case, the photon acquires mass, while the tensor remains massless. The resulting interaction potential is a screened Coulomb one. In the second case, the photon remains massless while Kalb-Ramond ten…
Strong field gravitational lensing in the context of both higher spacetime dimensions and in presence of Kalb-Ramond field have been studied. After developing proper analytical tools to analyze the problem we consider gravitational lensing in three distinct black hole spacetimes --- (a) four dimensional black hole in presence of Kalb-Ramond field, (b) brane world black holes with Kalb-Ramond field and finally (c) black hole solution in $f(T)$ gravity. In all the three situations we have depicted the behavior of three observables: the asymptotic position approached by the relativistic images, t…
We show that when the antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field is included in the Randall-Sundrum scenario, although the hierarchy problem can be solved, it requires an extreme fine tuning of the Kalb-Ramond field (about 1 part in $10^{62}$). We interpret this as the return of the problem in disguise. Further, we show that the Kalb-Ramond field induces a small negative cosmological constant on the visible brane.
This paper investigates a particular type of wormhole. The wormholes studied are the result of sewing together two Reissner-Nordstrom-type black hole metrics at their horizons. By requiring the stress-energy tensor associated with this geometry to be that of a Kalb-Ramond field, we obtain the mass and Kalb-Ramond charge of the wormholes in terms of the parameters describing the mass density, tension and pressure. We show by direct calculation of the action of these wormholes that they can be made quasi-stable against tunnelling to the vacuum via gravitational instantons by a suitable choice of…
We compare the massive Kalb-Ramond and Proca fields with a quartic self-interaction and show that the same strong coupling scale is present in both theories. In the Proca theory, the longitudinal mode enters the strongly coupled regime beyond this scale, while the two transverse modes propagate further and survive in the massless limit. In contrast, in case of the massive Kalb-Ramond field, the two transverse modes become strongly coupled beyond the Vainshtein scale, while the pseudo-scalar mode remains in the weak coupling regime and survives in the massless limit. This indicates a contradict…
The transformation properties of a Kalb-Ramond field are those of a gauge field; however, it is not clear which is the group structure these transformations are associated with. The purpose of this letter is to establish a basic framework in order to clarify the group structure underneath the 2-form gauge potential.
In this work we generalize the MacDowell-Mansouri theory of gravity using strict 2-groups. To achieve this, we construct the categorical generalization of the ISO(4,1) group, which we call the de Sitter 2-group. We then proceed to generalize the MacDowell-Mansouri theory in two different ways. First, as a Yang-Mills-type theory, where the symmetry is explicitly broken to obtain an Einstein-Cartan theory coupled to Kalb-Ramond fields. And second, by using the categorical generalization of the BF theory, called 2-BF theory, which after the addition of some symmetry breaking and constraint terms …
