The Casimir operators of a Lie algebra are in one-to-one correspondence with the symmetric invariant tensors of the algebra. There is an infinite family of Casimir operators whose members are expressible in terms of a number of primitive Casimirs equal to the rank of the underlying group. A systematic derivation is presented of a complete set of identities expressing non-primitive symmetric tensors in terms of primitive tensors. Several examples are given including an application to an exceptional Lie algebra.
We construct characteristic identities for the split (polarized) Casimir operators of the simple Lie algebras in adjoint representation. By means of these characteristic identities, for all simple Lie algebras we derive explicit formulae for invariant projectors onto irreducible subrepresentations in T^{\otimes 2} in the case when T is the adjoint representation. These projectors and characteristic identities are considered from the viewpoint of the universal description of the simple Lie algebras in terms of the Vogel parameters.
We introduce a search algorithm that utilises differential operator realisations to find polynomial Casimir operators of Lie algebras. To demonstrate the algorithm, we look at two classes of examples: (1) the model filiform Lie algebras and (2) the Schrödinger Lie algebras. We find that an abstract form of dimensional analysis assists us in our algorithm, and greatly reduces the complexity of the problem.
We find the characteristic identities for the split Casimir operator in the defining and adjoint representations of the $osp(M|N)$ and $s\ell(M|N)$ Lie superalgebras. These identities are used to build the projectors onto invariant subspaces of the representation $T^{\otimes 2}$ of the $osp(M|N)$ and $s\ell(M|N)$ Lie superalgebras in the cases when $T$ is the defining and adjoint representations. For defining representations, the $osp(M|N)$- and $s\ell(M|N)$-invariant solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation are expressed as rational functions of the split Casimir operator. For the adjoint repres…
Two approaches are developed to exploit, for simple complex or compact real Lie algebras g, the information that stems from the characteristic equations of representation matrices and Casimir operators. These approaches are selected so as to be viable not only for `small' Lie algebras and suitable for treatment by computer algebra. A very large body of new results emerges in the forms, a) of identities of a tensorial nature, involving structure constants etc. of g, b) of trace identities for powers of matrices of the adjoint and defining representations of g, c) of expressions of non-primitive…
We finish the determination of the invariants of the coadjoint representation of six dimensional real Lie algebras, by determining a fundamental set of invariants for the 99 isomorphism classes of solvable Lie algebras with five dimensional nilradical. We also give some results on the invariants of solvable Lie algebras in arbitrary dimension whose nilradical has codimension one.
We show that the Inönü-Wigner contraction naturally associated to a reduction chain $\frak{s}\supset \frak{s}^{\prime}$ of semisimple Lie algebras induces a decomposition of the Casimir operators into homogeneous polynomials, the terms of which can be used to obtain additional mutually commuting missing label operators for this reduction. The adjunction of these scalars that are no more invariants of the contraction allow to solve the missing label problem for those reductions where the contraction provides an insufficient number of labelling operators.
We construct characteristic identities for the split (polarized) Casimir operators of the simple Lie algebras in defining (minimal fundamental) and adjoint representations. By means of these characteristic identities, for all simple Lie algebras we derive explicit formulae for invariant projectors onto irreducible subrepresentations in T^{\otimes 2} in two cases, when T is the defining and the adjoint representation. In the case when T is the defining representation, these projectors and the split Casimir operator are used to explicitly write down invariant solutions of the Yang-Baxter equatio…
We construct a flat connection on the elliptic configuration space associated to any complex semisimple Lie algebra g. This elliptic Casimir connection has logarithmic singularities, and takes values in the deformed double current algebra of g defined by Guay. It degenerates to the trigonometric Casimir connection of g constructed by the first author. By analogy with the rational and trigonometric cases, we conjecture that the monodromy of the elliptic Casimir connection is described by the quantum Weyl group operators of the quantum toroidal algebra of g.
We consider the centers of the affine vertex algebras at the critical level associated with simple Lie algebras. We derive new formulas for generators of the centers in the classical types. We also give a new formula for the Capelli-type determinant for the symplectic Lie algebras and calculate the Harish-Chandra images of the Casimir elements arising from the characteristic polynomial of the matrix of generators of each classical Lie algebra.
Given a semidirect product $\frak{g}=\frak{s}\uplus\frak{r}$ of semisimple Lie algebras $\frak{s}$ and solvable algebras $\frak{r}$, we construct polynomial operators in the enveloping algebra $\mathcal{U}(\frak{g})$ of $\frak{g}$ that commute with $\frak{r}$ and transform like the generators of $\frak{s}$, up to a functional factor that turns out to be a Casimir operator of $\frak{r}$. Such operators are said to generate a virtual copy of $\frak{s}$ in $\mathcal{U}(\frak{g})$, and allow to compute the Casimir operators of $\frak{g}$ in closed form, using the classical formulae for the invaria…
A nilpotent Lie algebra n_{n,1} with an (n-1) dimensional Abelian ideal is studied. All indecomposable solvable Lie algebras with n_{n,1} as their nilradical are obtained. Their dimension is at most n+2. The generalized Casimir invariants of n_{n,1} and of its solvable extensions are calculated. For n=4 these algebras figure in the Petrov classification of Einstein spaces. For larger values of n they can be used in a more general classification of Riemannian manifolds.
We propose a systematic procedure to construct polynomial algebras from intermediate Casimir invariants arising from (semisimple or non-semisimple) Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$. In this approach, we deal with explicit polynomials in the enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{g}$. We present explicit examples to show how these Lie algebras can display different behaviours and can lead to Abelian algebras, quadratic algebras or more complex structures involving higher order nested commutators. Within this framework, we also demonstrate how virtual copies of the L…
We propose an algorithm for obtaining the spectra of Casimir (Laplace) operators on Lie groups. We prove that the existence of the normal polarization associated with a linear functional on the Lie algebra is necessary and sufficient for the transition to local canonical Darboux coordinates $(p,q)$ on the coadjoint representation orbit that is linear in the "momenta." We show that the $\la$-representations of Lie algebras (which are used, in particular, in integrating differential equations) result from the quantization of the Poisson bracket on the coalgebra in canonical coordinates.
We classify Lie-Poisson brackets that are formed from Lie algebra extensions. The problem is relevant because many physical systems owe their Hamiltonian structure to such brackets. A classification involves reducing all brackets to a set of normal forms, and is achieved partially through the use of Lie algebra cohomology. For extensions of order less than five, the number of normal forms is small and they involve no free parameters. We derive a general method of finding Casimir invariants of Lie-Poisson bracket extensions. The Casimir invariants of all low-order brackets are explicitly comput…
There has been proposed a new method of the constructing of the basic functions for spaces of tensor representations of the Lie groups with the help of the generalized Casimir operator. In the definition of the operator there were used the Lie derivatives instead of the corresponding infenitisemal operators. When introducing the generalized Casimir operator we use the metric for which a group being considered will be isometry that follows from the invariance condition for the generalized Casimir operator. This allows us to formulate the eigenvalue and eigenfunction problems correctly. The inva…
We classify Lie-Poisson brackets that are formed from Lie algebra extensions. The problem is relevant because many physical systems owe their Hamiltonian structure to such brackets. A classification involves reducing all brackets to a set of normal forms, independent under coordinate transformations, and is achieved with the techniques of Lie algebra cohomology. For extensions of order less than five, we find that the number of normal forms is small and they involve no free parameters. A special extension, known as the Leibniz extension, is shown to be the unique ``maximal'' extension. We deri…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simply laced Lie algebra, $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}_1$ the corresponding affine Lie algebra at level one, and $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$ the corresponding Casimir W-algebra. We consider $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$-symmetric conformal field theory on the Riemann sphere. To a number of $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$-primary fields, we associate a Fuchsian differential system. We compute correlation functions of $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}_1$-currents in terms of solutions of that system, and construct the bundle where these objects live. We argue that cycles on that bundle corres…
The uniformity, for the family of exceptional Lie algebras g, of the decompositions of the powers of their adjoint representations is well-known now for powers up to the fourth. The paper describes an extension of this uniformity for the totally antisymmetrised n-th powers up to n=9, identifying (see Tables 3 and 6) families of representations with integer eigenvalues 5,...,9 for the quadratic Casimir operator, in each case providing a formula (see eq. (11) to (15)) for the dimensions of the representations in the family as a function of D=dim g. This generalises previous results for powers j …
A full set of Casimir operators for the Lie superalgebra $gl(m/\infty)$ is constructed and shown to be well defined in the category $O_{FS}$ generated by the highest weight irreducible representations with only a finite number of non-zero weight components. The eigenvalues of these Casimir operators are determined explicitly in terms of the highest weight. Characteristic identities satisfied by certain (infinite) matrices with entries from $gl(m/\infty)$ are also determined.
Starting from the well-known quantum Miura-like transformation for the non simply-laced Lie algebras B(3),we give an explicit construction of the Casimir WB(3) algebras. We reserve the notation WB(N) for the Casimir W algebras of type W(2,4,6,...,2N,N+1/2) which contains one fermionic field. It is seen that WB(3) algebra is closed an associative for all values of the central element c.
Properties of group coherent states can be derived "effectively" without knowing full wave functions. The procedure is detailed in this article as an example of general methods for effective constraints. The role of constraints in the present context is played by a Casimir condition that puts states within an irreducible representation of a Lie group (or, equivalently, on a quantization of a co-adjoint orbit of the dual Lie algebra). Simplifications implied by a Casimir condition, compared with general first-class constraints, allows one to show that the correct number of degrees of freedom is…
In this paper, we study a certain specialization of Okounkov polynomials and its connection with the eigenfunctions of higher Casimir operators for the complex semi-simple lie algebra gl_n.
It is given a way of computing Casimir eigenvalues for Weyl orbits as well as for irreducible representations of Lie algebras. A kappa(s) number of polinomials which depend on rank N are obtained explicitly for A_N Casimir operators of order s where kappa(s) is the number of partitions of s into positive integers except 1. It is also emphasized that these eigenvalue polinomials prove useful in obtaining formulas to calculate weight multiplicities and in explicit calculations of the whole cohomology ring of Classical and also Exceptional Lie algebras.
The indecomposable solvable Lie algebras with graded nilradical of maximal nilindex and a Heisenberg subalgebra of codimension one are analyzed, and their generalized Casimir invariants calculated. It is shown that rank one solvable algebras have a contact form, which implies the existence of an associated dynamical system. Moreover, due to the structure of the quadratic Casimir operator of the nilradical, these algebras contain a maximal non-abelian quasi-classical Lie algebra of dimension $2n-1$, indicating that gauge theories (with ghosts) are possible on these subalgebras.
Modifications of the equations of ideal fluid dynamics with advected quantities are introduced that allow selective decay of either the energy $h$ or the Casimir quantities $C$ in the Lie-Poisson formulation. The dissipated quantity (energy or Casimir, respectively) is shown to decrease in time until the modified system reaches an equilibrium state consistent with ideal energy-Casimir equilibria, namely $δ(h+C)=0$. The result holds for Lie-Poisson equations in general, independently of the Lie algebra and the choice of Casimir. This selective decay process is illustrated with a number of examp…
In previous work, we introduced an algorithm that utilises differential operator realisations to find polynomial Casimir operators of Lie algebras. In this article we build on this work by applying the algorithm to several classes of finite dimensional conformal Galilei algebras with central extension. In these cases we highlight the utility of an algebra anti-automorphism, and give relevant details through key examples.
For every simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ we consider the associated Takiff algebra $\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell}$ defined as the truncated polynomial current Lie algebra with coefficients in $\mathfrak{g}$. We use a matrix presentation of $\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell}$ to give a uniform construction of algebraically independent generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra ${\rm U}(\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell})$. A similar matrix presentation for the affine Kac--Moody algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}^{}_{\ell}$ is then used to prove an analogue of the Feigin--Frenkel theorem describing the cent…
Motivated by the universal knot polynomials in the gauge Chern-Simons theory, we show that the values of the second Casimir operator on an arbitrary power of Cartan product of $X_2$ and adjoint representations of simple Lie algebras can be represented in a universal form. We show that it complies with $N\longrightarrow -N$ duality of the same operator for $SO(2n)$ and $Sp(2n)$ algebras (the part of $N\leftrightarrow-N$ duality of gauge $SO(2n)$ and $Sp(2n)$ theories). We discuss the phenomena of non-zero universal values of Casimir operator on zero representations.
This paper deals with the striking fact that there is an essentially canonical path from the $i$-th Lie algebra cohomology cocycle, $i=1,2,... l$, of a simple compact Lie algebra $\g$ of rank $l$ to the definition of its primitive Casimir operators $C^{(i)}$ of order $m_i$. Thus one obtains a complete set of Racah-Casimir operators $C^{(i)}$ for each $\g$ and nothing else. The paper then goes on to develop a general formula for the eigenvalue $c^{(i)}$ of each $C^{(i)}$ valid for any representation of $\g$, and thereby to relate $c^{(i)}$ to a suitably defined generalised Dynkin index. The for…
A full set of (higher order) Casimir invariants for the Lie algebra $gl(\infty )$ is constructed and shown to be well defined in the category $O_{FS}$ generated by the highest weight (unitarizable) irreducible representations with only a finite number of non-zero weight components. Moreover the eigenvalues of these Casimir invariants are determined explicitly in terms of the highest weight. Characteristic identities satisfied by certain (infinite) matrices with entries from $gl(\infty )$ are also determined and generalize those previously obtained for $gl(n)$ by Bracken and Green.$^{1,2}$

We consider Casimir elements for the orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras constructed with the use of the Brauer algebra. We calculate the images of these elements under the Harish-Chandra isomorphism and thus show that they (together with the Pfaffian-type element in the even orthogonal case) are algebraically independent generators of the centers of the corresponding universal enveloping algebras.
We prove that any regular Casimir in 3D magnetohydrodynamics is a function of the magnetic helicity and cross-helicity. In other words, these two helicities are the only independent regular integral invariants of the coadjoint action of the MHD group $\text{SDiff}(M)\ltimes\mathfrak X^*(M)$, which is the semidirect product of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the dual space of its Lie algebra.
