We show that the Casimir force and energy are modified in the kappa-deformed space-time. This is analysed by solving the Green's function corresponding to kappa-deformed scalar field equation in presence of two parallel plates, modelled by delta-function potentials. Exploiting the relation between energy-momentum tensor and Green's function, we calculate the correction to Casimir force, valid up to second order in the deformation parameter. The Casimir force is shown to get corrections which scale as $L^{-4}$ and $L^{-6}$ and both these types of corrections produce attractive forces. Using the measured value of Casimir force, we show that the deformation parameter should be below $10^{-23}$m.
We evaluate the one-loop correction to the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein system for the $ϕ^3$ model on $R^{1,d}\times (T_θ^2)^L$, where $1+d$ dimensions are the ordinary flat Minkowski spacetimes and the extra dimensions are the L two-dimensional noncommutative tori with noncommutativity $θ$. The correction to the Kaluza-Klein mass spectrum is then used to compute the Casimir energy. The results show that when $L>2$ the Casimir energy due to the noncommutativity could give repulsive force to stabilize the extra noncommutative tori in the cases of $d = 4n - 2$, with $n$ a positive integral.
A noncommutative complex scalar field, satisfying the deformed canonical commutation relations proposed by Carmona et al. [27]-[31], is constructed. Using these noncommutative deformed canonical commutation relations, a model describing the dynamics of the noncommutative complex scalar field is proposed. The noncommutative field equations are solved, and the vacuum energy is calculated to the second order in the parameter of noncommutativity. As an application to this model, the Casimir effect, due to the zero point fluctuations of the noncommutative complex scalar field, is considered. It tur…
After discussing the peculiarities of quantum systems on noncommutative (NC) spaces with non-trivial topology and the operator representation of the $\star$-product on them, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm and Casimir effects for such spaces. For the case of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, we have obtained an explicit expression for the shift of the phase, which is gauge invariant in the NC sense. The Casimir energy of a field theory on a NC cylinder is divergent, while it becomes finite on a torus, when the dimensionless parameter of noncommutativity is a rational number. The latter corresponds to a …
In this paper we study the effect of spacetime noncommutativity in the 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum brane worlds on the Casimir force acting on a pair of parallel plates. We show that the presence of a noncommutative scale length affects the nature of the Casimir force for small plate separation. Using accurate experimental bounds for the Casimir force in parallel plate geometry, we find an upper bound for the noncommutative cutoff of the order of $10^{3}$ TeV, and that the size of the interbrane distance in RSI model is approximately given by $kR\lesssim20.5$ and $kR\lesssim18.4$ for $k=10^{…
We compute the one loop Casimir energy of an interacting scalar field in a compact noncommutative space of $R^{1,d}\times T^2_θ$, where we have ordinary flat $1+d$ dimensional Minkowski space and two dimensional noncommuative torus. We find that next order correction due to the noncommutativity still contributes an attractive force and thus will have a quantum instability. However, the case of vector field in a periodic boundary condition gives repulsive force for $d>5$ and we expect a stabilized radius. This suggests a stabilization mechanism for a senario in Kaluza-Klein theory, where some o…
We study the Dirichlet Casimir effect for a complex scalar field on two noncommutative spatial coordinates plus a commutative time. To that end, we introduce Dirichlet-like boundary conditions on a curve contained in the spatial plane, in such a way that the correct commutative limit can be reached. We evaluate the resulting Casimir energy for two different curves: (a) Two parallel lines separated by a distance $L$, and (b) a circle of radius $R$. In the first case, the resulting Casimir energy agrees exactly with the one corresponding to the commutative case, regardless of the values of $L$ a…
The one-loop correction to the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein system for the $ϕ^3$ model on $R^{1,d}\times (T_θ^2)^L$ is evaluated in the high temperature limit, where the $1+d$ dimensions are the ordinary flat Minkowski spacetimes and the $L$ extra two-dimensional tori are chosen to be the noncommutative torus with noncommutativity $θ$. The corrections to the Kaluza-Klein mass formula are evaluated and used to compute the Casimir energy with the help of the Schwinger perturbative formula in the zeta-function regularization method. The results show that the one-loop Casimir energy is independent of …
We study the possibility that dark energy is a manifestation of the Casimir energy on extra dimensions with the topology of $S^2$. We consider our universe to be $M^4 \times S^2$ and modify the geometry by introducing noncommutativity on the extra dimensions only, i.e. replacing $S^2$ with the fuzzy version $S_{F}^2$. We find the energy density as a function of the size of the representation $M+1$ of the algebra of $S_{F}^2$, and we calculate its value for the $M+1=2$ case. The value of the energy density turns out to be positive, i.e. provides dark energy, and the size of the extra dimensions…
In noncommutative space, we examine the problem of a noninteracting and harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate, and derive a simple analytic expression for the effect of spatial noncommutativity on energy spectrum of the condensate. It indicates that the ground-state energy incorporating the spatial noncommutativity is reduced to a lower level, which depends upon the noncommutativity parameter $θ$. The appeared gap between the noncommutative space and commutative one for the ground-state level of the condensate should be a signal of spatial noncommutativity.
Coordinate noncommutativity, rather than being introduced through deformations of operator products, is achieved by coupling an auxiliary system with large energy excitations to the one of interest. Integrating out the auxiliary dynamics, or equivalently taking ground state expectation values, leads to the desired coordinate noncommutativity. The product responsible for this noncommutativity is different from the Groenewold-Moyal one. For products of operators at unequal times, this procedure differs from the normal, commutative one, for time differences smaller than ones characterized by the …
Stimulated by the importance of noncommutative geometry in recent developments in string theory, D-branes and integrable systems, one intends in this work to present a new insight towards adapting the famous idea of Zeeman effect to noncommutativity à la Moyal and develop an analysis leading to connect our results to the Bigatti-Suskind (BS) formulation.
The possibility of detecting noncommutive space relics is analyzed by using the Aharonov-Bohm effect. If space is non-commutative, it turns out that the holonomy receives kinematical corrections that tend to diffuse the fringe pattern. This fringe pattern has a non-trivial energy dependence and, therefore, one could observe noncommutative effects by modifying the energy of the incident electrons beam in the Tonomura experimental arrangement
We investigate the effect of T-duality on noncommutativity. Starting with open strings ending on a D2-brane wrapped on a $T^2$ torus in the presence of a Kalb Ramond field, we consider Buscher transformations on the coordinates and background. We find that the dual system is commutative. We also study alternative transformations that can preserve noncommutativity.
In this letter we study the effects of a noncommutative minisuperspace, including matter degrees of freedom on a FRW universe with cosmological constant. In this setting the vacuum energy density can be calculated to be of the same order as the observed energy density of the universe.
We investigate the transition from second to first order systems. This transforms configuration space into phase space and hence introduces noncommutativity in the former. Quantum mechanically, the transition may be described in terms of spectral flow. Gaps in the energy or mass spectrum may become large which effectively truncates the available state space. Using both operator and path integral languages we explicitly discuss examples in quantum mechanics, (light-front) quantum field theory and string theory.
We apply the transformation of mixing azimuthal and internal coordinate or mixing time and internal coordinate to a stack of N black M-branes to find the Melvin spacetime of a stack of N black D-branes with magnetic or electric flux in string theory, after the Kaluza-Klein reduction. We slightly extend previous formulas to investigate the external magnetic and electric effects on the butterfly effect and holographic mutual information. It shows that the Melvin fields do not modify the scrambling time and will enhance the mutual information. In addition, we also T-dualize and twist a stack of N…
A novel approach to the analysis of the gravitational well problem from a second quantised description has been discussed. The second quantised formalism enables us to study the effect of time space noncommutativity in the gravitational well scenario which is hitherto unavailable in the literature. The corresponding first quantized theory reveals a leading order perturbation term of noncommutative origin. Latest experimental findings are used to estimate an upper bound on the time--space noncommutative parameter. Our results are found to be consistent with the order of magnitude estimations of…
Solutions of the undeformed IKKT matrix model with structure R^{3,1} x K are presented, where the noncommutativity relates the compact with the non-compact space. The extra dimensions are stabilized by angular momentum, and the scales of K are generic moduli of the solutions. Explicit solutions are given for K= T^2, K= T^4, K = S^2 x T^2 and K = S^2 x S^2. Infinite towers of Kaluza-Klein modes may arise in some directions, along with an effective UV cutoff on the non-compact space. Deformations of these solutions carry NC gauge theory coupled to (emergent) gravity. Analogous solutions of the B…
We investigate the theory of the bosonic-fermionic noncommutativity, $[x^μ,θ^α] = i λ^{μα}$, and the Wess-Zumino model deformed by the noncommutativity. Such noncommutativity links well-known space-time noncommutativity to superspace non-anticommutativity. The deformation has the nilpotency. We can explicitly evaluate noncommutative effect in terms of new interactions between component fields. The interaction terms that have Grassmann couplings are induced. The noncommutativity does completely break full $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry to $ \mathcal{N} = 0 $ theory in Minkowski signature. Simila…
We show a simple way of deriving the Casimir Polder interaction, present some general arguments on the finiteness and sign of mutual Casimir interactions and finally we derive a simple expression for Casimir radiation from small accelerated objects.
In this paper the BTZ black hole geometry is probed with a noncommutative scalar field which obeys the $κ$-Minkowski algebra. The entropy of the BTZ black hole is calculated using the brick wall method. The contribution of the noncommutativity to the black hole entropy is explicitly evaluated up to the first order in the deformation parameter. We also argue that such a correction to the black hole entropy can be interpreted as arising from the renormalization of the Newton's constant due to the effects of the noncommutativity.
We reexamine the Casimir effect for the rectangular cavity with two or three equal edges in the presence of compactified universal extra dimension. We derive the expressions for the Casimir energy and discuss the nature of Casimir force. We show the extra-dimension corrections to the standard Casimir effect.
We study two-dimensional Hamiltonians in phase space with noncommutativity both in coordinates and momenta. We consider the generator of rotations on the noncommutative plane and the Lie algebra generated by Hermitian rotationally invariant quadratic forms of noncommutative dynamical variables. We show that two quantum phases are possible, characterized by the Lie algebras $sl(2,\mathbb{R})$ or $su(2)$ according to the relation between the noncommutativity parameters, with the rotation generator related with the Casimir operator. From this algebraic perspective, we analyze the spectrum of some…
The possibility of testing spatial noncommutativity by current experiments on normal quantum scales is investigated. For the case of both position-position and momentum-momentum noncommuting spectra of ions in crossed electric and magnetic fields are studied in the formalism of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In a limit of the kinetic energy approaching its lowest eigenvalue this system possesses non-trivial dynamics. Signals of spatial noncommutativity in the angular momentum are revealed. They are within limits of the measurable accuracy of current experiments. An experimental test of the …
We study solutions at the minima of scalar field potentials for Moyal spaces and torii in the large non-commutativity and interprete these solitons in terms of non-BPS D-branes of string theory. We derive a mass spectrum formula linking different D-branes together on quantum torii and suggest that it describes general systems of D-brane bound states extending the D2-D0 one. Then we propose a shape for the effective potential approaching these quasi-stable bound states. We give the gauge symmetries of these systems of branes and show that they depend on the quantum torii representations.
We study the noncommutative inflation with a time-dependent noncommutativity between space and time. From the numerical analysis of power law inflation, there are clues that the CMB spectrum indicates a nonconstant noncommutative inflation. Then we extend our treatment to the inflation models with more general noncommutativity and find that the scalar perturbation power spectrum depends sensitively on the time varying of the spacetime noncommutativity. This stringy effect may be probed in the future cosmological observations.
We consider the motion of a particle in a uniform field in noncommutative space which is rotationally invariant. On the basis of exact calculations it is shown that there is an effect of coordinate noncommutativity on the mass of a particle. A particular case of motion of a particle in a uniform gravitational field is considered and the equivalence principle is studied. We propose the way to solve the problem of violation of the equivalence principle in the rotationally invariant noncommutative space.
We study the effects of noncommutativity of spacetime with mixed spatial and spin degrees of freedom in a relativistic context. Using the Dirac equation in (3+1) dimensions and in a symmetric gauge, we calculate the invariant amplitude for a small magnetic field flux. The parameter θ that characterizes the noncommutativity here is not constant, and the model preserves Lorentz symmetry. A comparison is made with scattering in the context of canonical noncommutativity.
A new version of the Casimir effect where the two plates conduct in specific, different, directions is considered. By direct functional integration the evaluation of the Casimir energy as a function of the angle between the conduction directions is reduced to quadratures. Other applications of the method and a magnetic Casimir variant are mentioned.
We consider the noncommutative deformation of the Sakai--Sugimoto model at finite temperature and finite baryon chemical potential. The space noncommutativity is possible to have an influence on the flavor dynamics of the QCD. The critical temperature and critical value of the chemical potential are modified by the space noncommutativity. The influence of the space noncommutativity on the flavor dynamics of the QCD is caused by the Wess--Zumino term in the effective action of the D8-branes. The intermediate temperature phase, in which the gluons deconfine but the chiral symmetry remains broken…
In this paper the Casimir effect for parallel plates at finite temperature in the presence of compactified universal extra dimensions is analyzed. We show the thermal corrections to the effect in detail. We investigate the Casimir effect for different size of universal extra dimensions.
In this paper, the Casimir effect for parallel plates in the presence of one compactified universal extra dimension is reexamined in detail. Having regularized the expressions of Casimir force, we show that the nature of Casimir force is repulsive if the distance between the plates is large enough, which is disagree with the experimental phenomena.
In this paper we examine Casimir effect in the case of tachyonic field, which is connected with particles with negative four-momentum square. We consider here only the case of one dimensional, scalar field. In order to describe tachyonic field, we use the absolute synchronization scheme preserving Lorentz invariance. The renormalized vacuum energy is calculated by means of Abel-Plana formula. Finaly, the Casimir energy and Casimir force as the functions of distance are obtained. In order to compare the resulting formula with the standard one, we calculate the Casimir energy and Casimir force f…
We argue that the exactly computable, angle dependent, Casimir force between parallel plates with different directions of conductivity can be measured.
We examine the leading order noncommutative corrections to the differential and total cross sections for e+ e- --> q q-bar. After averaging over the earth's rotation, the results depend on the latitude for the collider, as well as the direction of the incoming beam. They also depend on scale and direction of the noncommutativity. Using data from LEP, we exclude regions in the parameter space spanned by the noncommutative scale and angle relative to the earth's axis. We also investigate possible implications for phenomenology at the future International Linear Collider.
The non-commutative Wess-Zumino model is used as a prototype for studying the low energy behaviour of a renormalizable non-commutative field theory. We start by deriving the potential mediating the fermion-fermion and boson-boson interactions in the non-relativistic regime. The quantum counterparts of these potentials are afflicted by irdering ambiguities but we show that there exists an ordering prescription which makes them hermitean. For space/space noncommutativity it turns out that Majorana fermions may be pictured as rods oriented perpendicularly to the direction of motion showing a lack…
The energy-momentum tensor for the gravitoelectromagnetism (GEM) theory in the real-time finite temperature field theory formalism is presented. Expressions for the Casimir energy and pressure at zero and finite temperature are obtained. An analysis of the Casimir effect for the GEM field is developed.
We compute the influence of an external magnetic field on the Casimir energy of a massive charged scalar field confined between two parallel infinite plates. For this case the obtained result shows that the magnetic field inhibits the Casimir effect.
We present the Casimir energy of spherical shell, for the symmetrically deformed scalar field in $κ$-Minkowski space-time, satisfying Dirichlet boundary condition. The Casimir energy shows the particle anti-particle symmetry contrary to the asymmetrically deformed case. In addition, the deformation effect starts from $O(1/κ)$ term unlike in the parallel plates.
In [hep-th/0009173] Milton has presented a brief review of some interesting aspects of the theory of the Casimir effect. This comment is aimed at correcting some imprecise statements in that work with respect to the relevance of the Casimir effect for explaining the phenomenon of sonoluminescence.
Zero-point fluctuations in quantum fields give rise to observable forces between material bodies, the so-called Casimir forces. In this lecture I present some results of the theory of the Casimir effect, primarily formulated in terms of Green's functions. There is an intimate relation between the Casimir effect and van der Waals forces. Applications to conductors and dielectric bodies of various shapes will be given for the cases of scalar, electromagnetic, and fermionic fields. The dimensional dependence of the effect will be described. Finally, we ask the question: Is there a connection betw…
We propose a new approach to the Casimir effect based on classical ray optics. We define and compute the contribution of classical optical paths to the Casimir force between rigid bodies. Our approach improves upon the proximity force approximation. It can be generalized easily to arbitrary geometries, different boundary conditions, to the computation of Casimir energy densities and to many other situations. This is a brief introduction to the method. Joint work with R.L.Jaffe.
The Casimir effect for parallel plates satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition in the context of effective QED coming from a six-dimensional Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution of the Abelian Higgs model with fermions coupled to gravity is studied at finite temperature. We find that the sign of the Casimir energy remains negative under the thermal influence. It is also shown that the Casimir force between plates will be weaker in the higher-temperature surroundings while keeps attractive. This Casimir effect involving the thermal influence is still inconsistent with the known experiments. We fi…
We investigate an inflationary model of the universe based on the assumption that space-time is noncommutative in the very early universe. We analyze the effects of space-time noncommutativity on the quantum fluctuations of an inflaton field and investigate their contributions to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We show that the angular power spectrum l(l+1)C_l generically has a sharp damping for lower l if we assume that the last scattering surface is traced back to fuzzy spheres at the times when large-scale modes cross the Hubble horizon.

The experimental observation of intense light emission by acoustically driven, periodically collapsing bubbles of air in water (sonoluminescence) has yet to receive an adequate explanation. One of the most intriguing ideas is that the conversion of acoustic energy into photons occurs quantum mechanically, through a dynamical version of the Casimir effect. We have argued elsewhere that in the adiabatic approximation, which should be reliable here, Casimir or zero-point energies cannot possibly be large enough to be relevant. (About 10 MeV of energy is released per collapse.) However, there are …
We proceed with the study of the Casimir force for parallel plates at finite temperature in the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. We find that the HL exponent can not be chosen as an integer, or the Casimir energy will be a constant and further the Casimir force between two parallel plates will vanish. The higher temperature makes the attractive Casimir force weaker, which is consistent with the original consequence confirmed theoretically and experimentally. We can select the HL factor adequately to lead the thermally revised Casimir force to be similar to the standard results for the parallel pla…
The influence of an external constant uniform magnetic field on the Casimir energy density of a Dirac field under antiperiodic (and periodic) boundary condition is computed by applying Schwinger's proper time method. The result thus obtained shows that in principle, under suitable conditions, the magnetic field can enhance the fermionic Casimir energy density.
We study effects of noncommutativity on the phase space generated by a non-minimal scalar field which is conformally coupled to the background curvature in an isotropic and homogeneous FRW cosmology. These effects are considered in two cases, when the potential of scalar field has zero and nonzero constant values. The investigation is carried out by means of a comparative detailed analysis of mathematical features of the evolution of universe and the most probable universe wave functions in classically commutative and noncommutative frames and quantum counterparts. The influence of noncommutat…
In this article, we derive the finite temperature Casimir force acting on a pair of parallel plates due to a massless scalar field propagating in the bulk of a higher dimensional brane model. In contrast to previous works which used approximations for the effective masses in deriving the Casimir force, the formulas of the Casimir force we derive are exact formulas. Our results disprove the speculations that existence of the warped extra dimension can change the sign of the Casimir force, be it at zero or any finite temperature.
The Casimir effect for Dirac as well as for scalar charged particles is influenced by external magnetic fields. It is also influenced by finite temperature. Here we consider the Casimir effect for a charged scalar field under the combined influence of an external magnetic field and finite temperature. The free energy for such a system is computed using Schwinger's method for the calculation of the effective action in the imaginary time formalism. We consider both the limits of strong and weak magnetic field in which we compute the Casimir free energy and pressure.
The noncommutativity induced by a Drinfel'd twist produces Bopp-shift like transformations for deformed operators. In a single-particle setting the Drinfel'd twist allows to recover the noncommutativity obtained from various methods which are not based on Hopf algebras. In multi-particle sector, on the other hand, the Drinfel'd twist implies novel features. In conventional approaches to noncommutativity, deformed primitive operators are postulated to act additively. A Drinfel'd twist implies non-additive effects which are controlled by the coproduct. We illustrate these features for a class of…
We discuss the Casimir effect for massless scalar fields subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions on the parallel plates at finite temperature in the presence of one fractal extra compactified dimension. We obtain the Casimir energy density with the help of the regularization of multiple zeta function with one arbitrary exponent and further the renormalized Casimir energy density involving the thermal corrections. It is found that when the temperature is sufficiently high, the sign of the Casimir energy remains negative no matter how great the scale dimension $δ$ is within its allowed regi…
The Casimir effect is investigated in light-cone quantization. It is shown that for spacelike separation of the walls enclosing the system the standard result for the pressure exerted on the walls is obtained. For walls separated in light-cone space direction no regularization of the quantum fluctuations exists which would yield a finite pressure. The origin of this failure and its implications for other vacuum properties are discussed by analyzing the Casimir effect as seen from a moving observer approaching the speed of light. The possibility for calculation of thermodynamic quantities in li…
The Casimir effect has been studied for various quantum fields in both flat and curved spacetimes. As a further step along this line, we provide an explicit derivation of Casimir effect for massless spin-3/2 field with periodic boundary condition imposed in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The corresponding results with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are also discussed.
The Casimir effect for {mass dimension one fermion fields (sometimes called Elko)} in $3+1$ dimension is obtained using Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown the existence of a repulsive force four times greater than the case of the scalar field. The precise reason for such differences are highlighted and interpreted, as well as the right parallel of the Casimir effect due to scalar and fermionic fields.
In this article, we consider the finite temperature Casimir effect in Kaluza-Klein spacetime due the the vacuum fluctuation of massless scalar field with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider the general case where the extra dimensions (internal space) can be any compact connected manifold or orbifold without boundaries. Using piston analysis, we show that the Casimir force is always attractive at any temperature, regardless of the geometry of the internal space. Moreover, the magnitude of the Casimir force increases as the size of the internal space increases and it reduces to the Casimi…
A computation of the Casimir effect for a real scalar field in four situations: on a segment of a line, on a circle and on both standard commutative and noncommutative two-spheres is given in this paper. The main aim of this paper is to discuss the Casimir energy on the noncommutative sphere within the theory with commutative time. The comparison with the noncommutative cylinder is also done.
