Recent work in the literature has studied rigid Casimir cavities in a weak gravitational field, or in de Sitter spacetime, or yet other spacetime models. The present review paper studies the difficult problem of direct evaluation of scalar Green functions for a Casimir-type apparatus in de Sitter spacetime. Working to first order in the small parameter of the problem, i.e. twice the gravity acceleration times the plates' separation divided by the speed of light in vacuum, suitable coordinates are considered for which the differential equations obeyed by the zeroth- and first-order Green functions can be solved in terms of special functions. This result can be used, in turn, to obtain, via the point-split method, the regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor both in the scalar case and in the physically more relevant electromagnetic case.
We demonstrate that the static ground state atom, which interacts with a conformally coupled massless scalar field in the de Sitter invariant vacuum, can obtain a position-dependent energy-level shift and this shift could cause a Casimir-Polder-like force on it. Interestingly no such force arises on the inertial atom bathed in a thermal radiation in the Minkowski universe. Thus, although the energy-level shifts of the static atom for these two cases are structurally the same, whether the energy-level shift causes the Casimir-Polder-like force, in principle, could be as an indicator to distingu…
Casimir effect for massless minimally coupled scalar field is studied. An explicit answer for de Sitter spacetime is obtained and analized. Cosmological implications of the result are discussed.
The vacuum energy for a massless conformally coupled scalar field in a brane world set up, corresponding to de Sitter branes in a bulk anti-de Sitter spacetime, is calculated. We use the Euclidean version of the metric which can be conformally related to a metric similar in form to the Einstein universe (S^4 times R). Employing zeta-function regularisation we evaluate the one-loop effective potential and show that the vacuum energy is zero for the one brane and non-zero for the two brane configuration. We comment on the back-reaction of this Casimir energy and on the inclusion of a mass term o…
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter and the de Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors we discover the existence of an unstable mode even for the non-degenerate case. This result seems to be in agreement with the sub-maximal black hole pair creation of Bousso-Hawking. The instability can be eliminated by the boundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space are discussed.
Based on some recent work of the authors, we focus on the relationship between the Casimir energy of a Majorana spinor field for a Euclidean Einstein universe $S^4\times R$ and for a Euclidean de Sitter brane ($S^4$) embedded in AdS(5). This is for a conformally coupled massless field. Interestingly, the one brane effective potential is zero and the results are equivalent, as for the scalar case, when evaluated on the conformally related cylinder. However, using the actual metric this equivalence no longer holds because a non-trivial contribution from the path integral measure (known as the co…
The Casimir stress on two parallel plates in a de Sitter background corresponding to different metric signatures and cosmological constants is calculated for massless scalar fields satisfying Robin boundary conditions on the plates. Our calculation shows that for the parallel plates with false vacuum between and true vacuum outside, the total Casimir pressure leads to an attraction of the plates at very early universe.
We compute the Casimir energy of the photon field in a de Sitter space and find it to be proportional to the size of the horizon, the same form of the holographic dark energy. We suggest to make metamaterials to mimic de Sitter space in laboratory and measure the predicted Casimir energy.
In this paper, vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space-time is investigated through the Krein-Gupta-Bleuler construction. This construction has already been successfully applied to the de Sitter minimally coupled massless scalar field and massless spin-2 field to obtain a causal and fully covariant quantum field on the de Sitter background. We also consider the effects of boundary conditions. In this respect, Casimir energy-momentum tensor induced by Dirichlet boundary condition on a curved brane is evaluated.
We revisit the Casimir effect for two concentric spherical shells in de Sitter background with a new geometric configuration, namely Euclidean signature between and Lorentzian signature outside the spheres with different cosmological constants, for a massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the spheres. It is shown that an extra constant pressure emerges due to this signature changing configuration. Some interesting aspects of this extra term are then discussed.
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter and the Anti-de Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors we discover the existence of an unstable mode at zero temperature, which can be stabilized by the boundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space are discussed.
The Casimir stress on a spherical shell in de Sitter background for massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the shell is calculated. The metric is written in conformally flat form. Although the metric is time dependent no particles are created. The Casimir stress is calculated for inside and outside of the shell with different backgrounds corresponding to different cosmological constants. The detail dynamics of the bubble depends on different parameter of the model. Specifically, bubbles with true vacuum inside expand if the difference in the vacuum energies is small,…
The vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor and the Casimir forces are investigated for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of two parallel plates, on the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch--Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the plates. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor is non-diagonal, with the off-diagonal component corresponding to the energy flux along the direction normal to the plates. It is shown that the curvature of the background spacetime d…
We investigate the Hadamard function, the vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor of a scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in de Sitter spacetime compactified along one of spatial dimensions. By using the Abel-Plana summation formula, we have explicitly extracted from the vacuum expectation values the part due to the compactness of the spatial dimension. The topological part in the vacuum energy-momentum tensor violates the local de Sitter symmetry and dominates in the early stages of the cosmological evolution. At late times the correspo…
The Casimir densities are investigated for a massive spinor field in de Sitter spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. The vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor is presented in the form of the sum of corresponding quantity in the uncompactified de Sitter spacetime and the part induced by the non-trivial topology. The latter is finite and the renormalization is needed for the first part only. The asymptotic behavior of the topological term is investigated in the early and late stages of the cosmological expansion. When the comoving leng…
Vacuum energy density and stresses are investigated for a scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in (D+1)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. The corresponding expectation values are presented in the form of the sum of the vacuum expectation values in uncompactified dS spacetime and the part induced by the non-trivial topology. In the early stages of the cosmological evolution the topological parts dominate. In this limit the behavior of the Casimir densities does not depend on the curvature coupling parameter …
Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for a scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of a plate in the de Sitter spacetime. Robin boundary condition for the field operator is assumed on the plate. The vacuum expectation values are presented as the sum of two terms. The first one corresponds to the geometry of de Sitter bulk without boundaries and the second one is induced by the presence of the plate. We show that for non-conformal fields the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is non-diagon…
We investigate the fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive spinor field in de Sitter spacetime with spatial topology $\mathrm{R}^{p}\times (\mathrm{S}^{1})^{q}$. Both cases of periodicity and antiperiodicity conditions along the compactified dimensions are considered. By using the Abel-Plana formula, the topological parts are explicitly extracted from the vacuum expectation values. In this way the renormalization is reduced to the renormalization procedure in uncompactified de Sitter spacetime. It is shown that in the uncompactified su…
The Wightman function and the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor are obtained, for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter, in the region between two infinite parallel plates, on the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the plates. For the calculation, a mode-summation method is used, supplemented with a variant of the generalized Abel-Plana formula. This allows to explicitly extract the contributions to the …
The fermionic condensate and vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, for a massive fermionic field on the background of anti-de Sitter spacetime, in the geometry of two parallel boundaries with bag boundary conditions, are investigated. Vacuum expectation values, expressed as series involving the eigenvalues of the radial quantum number, are neatly decomposed into boundary-free, single-boundary-induced, and second-boundary-induced parts, with the help of the generalized Abel-Plana summation formula. In this way, the renormalization procedure is very conveniently reduced to the …
We evaluate the two-point function for the electromagnetic field tensor in $(D+1)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime assuming that the field is prepared in Bunch-Davies vacuum state. This two-point function is used for the investigation of the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor in the presence of a conducting plate. The VEVs are decomposed into the boundary-free and plate-induced parts. For the latter, closed form analytical expressions are given in terms of the hypergeometric function. For $3\leqslant D\leqslant 8$ the plate-induced part in the …
We estimate the dominating frequencies contributing to the Casimir energy in a cavity of metamaterials mimicking de Sitter space, by solving the eigenvalue problem of Maxwell equations. It turns out the dominating frequencies are the inverse of the size of the cavity, and the degeneracy of these frequencies also explains our previous result on the unusually large Casimir energy. Our result suggests that carrying out the experiment in laboratory is possible theoretically.
The properties of the covariant quantum fields on de Sitter spacetimes are investigated focusing on the isometry generators and Casimir operators in order to establish the equivalence among the covariant representations and the unitary irreducible ones of the de Sitter isometry group. For the Dirac quantum field it is shown that the spinor covariant representation, transforming the Dirac field under de Sitter isometries, is equivalent with a direct sum of two unitary irreducible representations of the $Sp(2,2)$ group, transforming alike the particle and antiparticle field operators in momentum…
We develop the physics of dual kappa Poincare algebra, which we will call dual DSR. First, we show that the dual kappa Poincare algebra is isomorphic to de Sitter algebra and its spactime is essentially de Sitter spacetime. Second, we show how to derive the coproduct rules for Beltrami and conformal coordinates of de Sitter spacetime. It follows from the current literature on de Sitter relativity that the speed of light c and the de Sitter length are the two invariant scales of the physics of dual kappa Poincare algebra. Third, we derive the Casimir invariant of the dual kappa Popincare algebr…
Two-point functions, mean-squared fluctuations, and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor operator are investigated for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter, subject to a spherical boundary in the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the sphere. Both the interior and exterior regions are considered. For the calculation in the interior region, a mode-summation method is employed, supplemented with a variant of the generalized Abel-…
Complete set of cylindrical modes is constructed for the electromagnetic field inside and outside a cylindrical shell in the background of $(D+1)$% -dimensional dS spacetime. On the shell, the field obeys the generalized perfect conductor boundary condition. For the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, we evaluate the expectation values (VEVs) of the electric field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor. The shell-induced contributions are explicitly extracted. In this way, for points away from the shell, the renormalization is reduced to the one for the VEVs in the boundary-free dS bulk. As a specia…
Casimir-Polder interaction arises from the vacuum fluctuations of quantum field that depend on spacetime curvature and thus is spacetime-dependent. Here we show how to use the resonance Casimir-Polder interaction (RCPI) between two entangled atoms to detect spacetime curvature. We find that the RCPI of two static entangled atoms in the de Sitter-invariant vacuum depends on the de Sitter spacetime curvature relevant to the temperature felt by the static observer. It is characterized by a $1/L^2$ power law decay when beyond a characteristic length scale associated to the breakdown of a local ine…
Complete set of modes and the Hadamard function are constructed for a scalar field inside and outside a sphere in (D+1)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime foliated by negative constant curvature spaces. We assume that the field obeys Robin boundary condition on the sphere. The contributions in the Hadamard function induced by the sphere are explicitly separated and the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor are investigated for the hyperbolic vacuum. In the flat spacetime limit the latter is reduced to the conformal vacuum in the Milne universe and is dif…
The covariant free fields of any spin on anti-de Sitter spacetimes are studied, pointing out that these transform under isometries according to covariant representations of the anti-de Sitter isometry group, induced by those of the Lorentz group. Applying the method of ladder operators it is shown that the covariant representations with unique spin are equivalent with discrete unitary irreducible representations of positive energy of the universal covering group of the isometry one. The action of the Casimir operators is studied finding how the weights of these representations may depend on th…
We evaluate the positive-frequency Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling for a cylindrical shell in background of dS spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and on the shell the corresponding operator obeys Robin boundary condition. In the region inside the shell and for non-Neumann boundary conditions, the Bunch-Davies vacuum is a physically realizable state for all values of the mass and curvature coupling parameter. For both interior and …
Matrix elements and spherical functions of irreducible representations of the de Sitter group are studied on the various homogeneous spaces of this group. It is shown that a universal covering of the de Sitter group gives rise to quaternion Euler angles. An explicit form of Casimir and Laplace-Beltrami operators on the homogeneous spaces is given. Different expressions of the matrix elements and spherical functions are given in terms of multiple hypergeometric functions both for finite-dimensional and unitary representations of the principal series of the de Sitter group.
We construct wavepackets on de Sitter spacetime, with masses consistently defined from the eigenvalues of an irreducible representation of a Casimir element in the universal enveloping algebra of the Lorentz algebra and analyse their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, we show that, in the limit as the de Sitter radius tends to infinity, the wavepackets tend to the wavepackets of Minkowski spacetime and the plane waves arising after contraction have support sharply located on the mass shell.
Using methods in the theory of semisimple Lie algebras, we can obtain all smooth solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation on the 4-dimensional de Sitter spacetime (dS^4). The mass of a Klein-Gordon scalar on dS^4 is related to an eigenvalue of the Casimir operator of so(1,4). Thus it is discrete, or quantized. Furthermore, the mass m of a Klein-Gordon scalar on dS^4 is imaginary: m^2 being proportional to -N(N+3), with N >= 0 an integer.
As in Deformed Special Relativity, we showed recently that the Fock coordinate transformation can be derived from a new deformed Poisson brackets. This approach allowed us to establish the corresponding momentum transformation which keeps invariant the four dimensional contraction $p_μ x^μ $. From the resulting deformed algebra, we construct in this paper the corresponding first Casimir. After first quantization, we show by using the Klein-Gordon equation that the spacetime of the Fock transformation is the de Sitter one. As we will see, the invariant length representing the universe radius in…
We present a technique for obtaining spherically symmetric, asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter, black hole solutions of dilaton gravity with generic coupling to a Maxwell field, starting from exact asymptotically flat solutions and adding a suitable dilaton potential to the action.

In this paper, it is shown that the covariant representation (CR) transforming the Dirac field under de Sitter isometries is equivalent to a direct sum of two unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of the $Sp(2,2)$ group transforming alike the particle and antiparticle field operators in momentum representation. Their basis generators and Casimir operators are written down for the first time finding that these representations are equivalent to a UIR from the principal series whose canonical labels are determined by the fermion mass and spin. The properties of the conserved observables (i. …
In a previous work [S. Rahbardehghan et al. in Phys. Lett. B 750, 627 (2015)], we considered a simple brane-world model; a single $4$-dimensional brane embedded in a $5$-dimensional de Sitter (dS) space-time. Then, by including a conformally coupled scalar field in the bulk, we studied the induced Casimir energy-momentum tensor. Technically, the Krein-Gupta-Bleuler (KGB) quantization scheme as a covariant and renormalizable quantum field theory in dS space was used to perform the calculations. In the present paper, we generalize this study to a less idealized, but physically motivated, scenari…
\emph{Resonance Casimir-Polder interaction(RCPI)} occurs in nature when one or more atoms are in their excited states and the exchange of real photon is involved between them due to vacuum fluctuations of the quantum fields. In recent times, many attempts have been made to show that the curved spacetime such as the \emph{de-Sitter spacetime} can be separated from a \emph{thermal Minkowski spacetime} using \emph{RCPI}. Motivated from these ideas, here we study the \emph{RCPI} between two atoms that interact with a massive scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime provided the atoms are placed in …
We compute the {\it exact} equation of state of circular strings in the (2+1) dimensional de Sitter (dS) and anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, and analyze its properties for the different (oscillating, contracting and expanding) strings. The string equation of state has the perfect fluid form $P=(γ-1)E,$ with the pressure and energy expressed closely and completely in terms of elliptic functions, the instantaneous coefficient $γ$ depending on the elliptic modulus. We semi-classically quantize the oscillating circular strings. The string mass is $m=\sqrt{C}/(πHα'),\;C$ being the Casimir operator…
We propose a definition of uniform accelerated frames in de Sitter spacetimes applying the Nachtmann method of introducing coordinates using suitable point-dependent isometries. In order to recover the well-known Rindler approach in the flat limit, we require the transformation between the static frame and the accelerated one to depend continuously on acceleration, obtaining thus the natural generalization of the Rindler transformation to the de Sitter spacetimes of any dimensions.
The goal of this paper is to extend the particle-like quantization scheme presented in Pacheco and Silk (2020), to extremal Kerr-de Sitter black holes in four spacetime dimensions, thereby obtaining various quantized parameters, like the black hole mass and angular momentum, consistent with existing results, in the proper limits. Moreover, we show numerically, that for such extremal quantum black holes, there is a root mean square deviation from the First Law of black hole thermodynamics, of the order $\mathcal{O}(Λ^{0.45 \pm 0.01})$, where $Λ$ denotes the Cosmological Constant.
New quantum modes of the free scalar field are derived in a special time-evolution picture that may be introduced in moving charts of de Sitter backgrounds. The wave functions of these new modes are solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation and energy eigenfunctions, defining the energy basis. This completes the scalar quantum mechanics where the momentum basis is well-known from long time. In this enlarged framework the quantization of the scalar field can be done in canonical way obtaining the principal conserved one-particle operators and the Green functions.
In this paper, the two-point function of linearized gravitons on de Sitter (dS) space is presented. Technically, respecting the dS ambient space notation, the field equation is given by the coordinate-independent Casimir operators of the de Sitter group. Analogous to the quantization of the electromagnetic field in Minkowski space, the field equation admits gauge solutions. The notation allows us to exhibit the formalism of Gupta-Bleuler triplets for the present field in exactly the same manner as it occurs for the electromagnetic field. In this regard, centering on the spin-two part (the trac…
A calculation of the entropy of static, electrically charged, black holes with spherical, toroidal, and hyperbolic compact and oriented horizons, in D spacetime dimensions, is performed. These black holes live in an anti-de Sitter spacetime, i.e., a spacetime with negative cosmological constant. To find the entropy, the approach developed by Solodukhin is followed. The method consists in a redefinition of the variables in the metric, by considering the radial coordinate as a scalar field. Then one performs a 2+(D-2) dimensional reduction, where the (D-2) dimensions are in the angular coordinat…
We consider one loop graviton corrections to scalar field Green's functions in the de Sitter phase of an inflationary space-time, a topic relevant to the computation of cosmological observables beyond linear order. By embedding de-Sitter space into an ultraviolet complete theory such as M-theory we argue that the ultraviolet (UV) cutoff of the effective field theory should be taken to be fixed in physical coordinates, whereas the infrared (IR) cutoff is expanding as space expands. In this context, we demonstrate how to implement three different regularization schemes -- the brute force cutoff …
Classical 10d string backgrounds with a 4d de Sitter space-time, D-brane and orientifold sources, are commonly believed to satisfy the following: 1. There is no classical de Sitter solution with parallel sources. 2. Classical de Sitter solutions with intersecting sources are unstable. 3. Classical de Sitter solutions cannot have at the same time a large internal volume, a small string coupling, a bounded number of orientifolds and quantized fluxes. These three conjectures are of particular relevance to the swampland program, and if true, they challenge the connection of string theory to cosmol…
We present a thorough analysis for the quasinormal (QN) behavior, associated with the decay of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations, of Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes. As it is known the anti-de Sitter (AdS) QN spectrum crucially depends on the relative size of the black hole to the AdS radius. There are three different types of behavior depending on whether the black hole is large, intermediate, or small. The results of previous works, concerning lower overtones for large black holes, are completed here by obtaining higher overtones for all the three black hole re…
We present a calculation of the zeta function and of the functional determinant for a Laplace-type differential operator, corresponding to a scalar field in a higher dimensional de Sitter brane background, which consists of a higher dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk spacetime bounded by a de Sitter section, representing a brane. Contrary to the existing examples, which all make use of conformal transformations, we evaluate the zeta function working directly with the higher dimensional wave operator. We also consider a generic mass term and coupling to curvature, generalizing previous results. Th…
We study some kinematical aspects of quantum fields on causal sets. In particular, we are interested in free scalar fields on a fixed background causal set. We present various results building up to the study of the entanglement entropy of de Sitter horizons using causal sets. We begin by obtaining causal set analogs of Green functions for this field. First we construct the retarded Green function in a Riemann normal neighborhood (RNN) of an arbitrary curved spacetime. Then, we show that in de Sitter and patches of anti-de Sitter spacetimes the construction can be done beyond the RNN. This all…
