In the AdS/CFT description of four-dimensional QCD matter undergoing Bjorken expansion, does the holographic energy-momentum tensor contain a Casimir-type contribution that should not be attributed to thermal matter? When the bulk isometry ansatz that yielded such a Casimir term for (1+1)-dimensional boundary matter is generalised to a four-dimensional boundary, we show that a Casimir term does not arise, owing to singularities in the five-dimensional bulk solution. The geometric reasons are traced to a difference between the isometries of AdS_3 and AdS_{d+1} for d>=3.
We calculate the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed tangentially to the surface of a sphere with mass M and radius R. To this end, we take into account a static and spherically symmetric solution of Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, with a cosmological constant term, in lower orders of approximation, considering both weak-field and infrared limits. We show that the Casimir energy, just in the second order weak-field approximation, is modified due to the parameter of the HL gravity as well as to the cosm…
We study the application of AdS/CFT duality to longitudinal boost invariant Bjorken expansion of QCD matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. As the exact (1+4)-dimensional bulk solutions for the (1+3)-dimensional boundary theory are not known, we investigate in detail the (1+1)-dimensional boundary theory, where the bulk is AdS_3 gravity. We find an exact bulk solution, show that this solution describes part of the spinless Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole with the angular dimension unwrapped, and use the thermodynamics of the BTZ hole to recover the time-dependen…
We study the Casimir effect in the framework of Standard Model Extension (SME). Employing the weak field approximation, the vacuum energy density ε and the pressure for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates in a static spacetime background are calculated. In particular, through the analysis of ε, we speculate a constraint on the Lorentz-violating term s00 which is lower than the bounds currently available for this quantity. After that, the correction to the pressure given by the gravitational sector of SME is presented. Finally, we remark that our outcome has an i…
The contribution presents a brief summary of the Gauge/Gravity approach to the study of hydrodynamic flow of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions, in a boost-invariant setting (Bjorken flow). Considering the ideal case of a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for which the AdS/CFT correspondence gives a precise form of the Gauge/Gravity duality, the properties of the strongly coupled expanding plasma are put in one-to-one correspondence with the metric of a 5-dimensional black hole with the horizon moving away in the 5th dimension and its deformations consistent with the relevant…
A model of traversable wormhole in an extended gravity theory has been proposed. The Casimir effect and Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) arising out of the concept of minimal length have been considered to obtain the shape function, radial and tangential pressure of the wormhole. The effects of the GUP parameter and the parameter of the extended gravity theory on the wormhole properties have been discussed. The energy condition violation by the exotic matter of Casimir wormhole have been shown. Also we have calculated the exotic matter content of the Casimir wormhole that violate the nu…
An analogy between the subtraction procedure in the Gibbons-Hawking Euclidean path integral approach to Horizon's Thermodynamics and the Casimir effect is shown. Then a conjecture about a possible Casimir nature of the Gibbons-Hawking subtraction is made in the framework of Sakharov's induced gravity. In this framework it appears that the degrees of freedom involved in the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy are naturally identified with zero--point modes of the matter fields. Some consequences of this view are sketched.
We review new constraints on the Yukawa-type corrections to Newtonian gravity obtained recently from gravitational experiments and from the measurements of the Casimir force. Special attention is paid to the constraints following from the most precise dynamic determination of the Casimir pressure between the two parallel plates by means of a micromechanical torsional oscillator. The possibility of setting limits on the predictions of chameleon field theories using the results of gravitational experiments and Casimir force measurements is discussed.
We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy of a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed tangentially to the surface of a sphere with mass M and radius R. This study will take into account the static and spherically symmetric solution of Horava-Lifshitz gravity found by Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS), in both weak field and infrared limits. A slight amplification of the Casimir force between the conducting plates is found. Thermal corrections to the Casimir energy are analyzed. Based on current Casimir effect measurements, a constra…
We consider a Casimir apparatus consisting of two perfectly conducting parallel plates, subject to the weak gravitational field of the Earth. The aim of this paper is the calculation of the energy-momentum tensor of this system for a free, real massless scalar field satisfying Neumann boundary conditions on the plates. The small gravity acceleration (here considered as not varying between the two plates) allows us to perform all calculations to first order in this parameter. Some interesting results are found: a correction, depending on the gravity acceleration, to the well-known Casimir energ…
We review and assess a part of the recent work on Casimir apparatuses in the weak gravitational field of the Earth. For a free, real massless scalar field subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on the parallel plates, the resulting regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor is covariantly conserved, while the trace anomaly vanishes if the massless field is conformally coupled to gravity. Conformal coupling also ensures a finite Casimir energy and finite values of the pressure upon parallel plates. These results have been extended to an electromagnetic field subject to per…
I present a solution to the full Einstein-fluid equations representing a self-gravitating Bjorken flow. The motion and the geometry become inhomogeneous in the plane transversal to the flow and the energy density profile acquires, due to gravity, corrections in terms of proper time as compared to the original test hydrodynamics. The transverse distribution of energy density, for example, becomes $ε(τ,r)/ε(τ,0)\,=\, \cosh^{-4}{(3ar)}$
In recent years there has been a growing interest in the field of Casimir wormhole. In classical general relativity (GR), it is known that the null energy condition (NEC) has to be violated to have a wormhole to be stable. The Casimir effect is an experimentally verified effect that is caused due to the vacuum field fluctuations in quantum field theory. Since the Casimir effect provides the negative energy density, thus this act as an ideal candidate for the exotic matter needed for the stability of the wormhole. In this paper, we study the Casimir effect on the wormhole geometry in modified s…
Recent work in the literature had evaluated the energy-momentum tensor of a Casimir apparatus in a weak gravitational field, for an electromagnetic field subject to perfect conductor boundary conditions on parallel plates. The Casimir apparatus was then predicted to experience a tiny push in the upwards direction, and the regularized energy-momentum tensor was found to have a trace anomaly. The latter, unexpected property made it compelling to assess what happens in a simpler case. For this purpose, the present paper studies a free, real massless scalar field subject to homogeneous Dirichlet c…
Gravitons are described by the propagator in Teleparallel gravity in nearly flat space-time. Finite temperature is introduced by using Thermo Field Dynamics formalism. The Gravitational Casimir effect and Stefan-Boltzmann law are calculated as a function of temperature. Then an equation of state for gravitons is determined.
We report stronger constraints on the parameters of Yukawa-type corrections to Newtonian gravity from measurements of the lateral Casimir force between sinusoidally corrugated surfaces of a sphere and a plate. In the interaction range from 1.6 to 14 nm the strengthening of previously known high confidence constraints up to a factor of $2.4\times 10^7$ is achieved using these measurements. It is shown that the replacement of a plane plate with a corrugated one in the measurements of the normal Casimir force by means of an atomic force microscope would result in the strengthening of respective h…
This paper studies two perfectly conducting parallel plates in the weak gravitational field on the surface of the Earth. Since the appropriate line element, to first order in the constant gravity acceleration g, is precisely of the Rindler type, we can exploit the formalism for studying Feynman Green functions in Rindler spacetime. Our analysis does not reduce the electromagnetic potential to the transverse part before quantization. It is instead fully covariant and well suited for obtaining all components of the regularized and renormalized energy-momentum tensor to arbitrary order in the gra…
We apply quantum field theory in quantum space-time techniques to study the Casimir effect for large spherical shells. As background we use the recently constructed exact quantum solution for spherically symmetric vacuum space-time in loop quantum gravity. All calculations are finite and one recovers the usual results without the need of regularization or renormalization. This is an example of how loop quantum gravity provides a natural resolution to the infinities of quantum field theories.
The Casimir effect for parallel plates satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition in the context of effective QED coming from a six-dimensional Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution of the Abelian Higgs model with fermions coupled to gravity is studied at finite temperature. We find that the sign of the Casimir energy remains negative under the thermal influence. It is also shown that the Casimir force between plates will be weaker in the higher-temperature surroundings while keeps attractive. This Casimir effect involving the thermal influence is still inconsistent with the known experiments. We fi…
We obtain constraints on parameters of the Yukawa-type corrections to Newton's gravitational law from measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force between surfaces coated with ferromagnetic metal Ni and from measurements of the Casimir force between Au-coated sinusoidally corrugated surfaces at various angles between corrugations. It is shown that constraints following from the experiment with magnetic surfaces are slightly weaker than currently available strongest constraints, but benefit from increased reliability and independence of systematic effects. The constraints derived from the e…
We show through Schwinger's approach that in a static weak gravitational background, the Casimir Energy for a real massless scalar field obeying Dirichlet boundary conditions on rectangular plates is unaltered from it's flat space-time value. The result is obtained considering an rather general class of backgrounds, adding further generality and consistency test for the previous work. The proposed result has direct consequences on earlier works in the literature that found gravity related corrections for similar setups.
In large-$N_c$ conformal field theories with classical holographic duals, inverse coupling constant corrections are obtained by considering higher-derivative terms in the corresponding gravity theory. In this work, we use type IIB supergravity and bottom-up Gauss-Bonnet gravity to study the dynamics of boost-invariant Bjorken hydrodynamics at finite coupling. We analyze the time-dependent decay properties of non-local observables (scalar two-point functions and Wilson loops) probing the different models of Bjorken flow and show that they can be expressed generically in terms of a few field the…
In this manuscript we compute corrections to the global Casimir effect at zero and finite temperature due to Rainbow's Gravity (parametrized by $ξ$). For this we use the solutions for the scalar field with mass $m$ in the deformed Schwarzschild background and the corresponding quantized energies of the system, which represent the stationary states of the field and yield the stable part of the quantum vacuum energy. The analysis is made here by considering the limit for which the source mass, $M$, approaches zero, in order to verify the effects on the global Casimir effect in mini black holes n…
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. We use Fermi coordinates and work to first order in the constant acceleration parameter. A new simple formula for the trace anomaly is found to first order in the constant acceleration, and a more systematic derivation is therefore obtained of the theoretical prediction according to which the Casimir device in a weak gravitational field will experience a tiny push in the upwards direction.
We conjecture that the neutral black hole pair production is related to the vacuum fluctuation of pure gravity via the Casimir-like energy. Implications on the foam-like structure of spacetime are discussed.
We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy density for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed very close to the surface of a rotating spherical gravitational source with mass $M$, radius $R$ and momentum angular $J$, at the equatorial region. We consider that the source rotates slowly and that the gravitational field is weak. Corrections to the Casimir energy density induced by the gravitational field generated by this source are calculated up to $M/R^2$ order. The obtained results show us that there is an important mod…
We conjecture that the neutral black hole pair production is related to the vacuum fluctuation of pure gravity via the Casimir-like energy. A generalization of this process to a multi-black hole pair is considered. Implications on the foam-like structure of spacetime and on the cosmological constant are discussed.
We consider Kasner space-time describing anisotropic three dimensional expansion of RHIC and LHC fireball and study the generalization of Bjorken's one dimensional expansion by taking into account second order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. Using time dependent AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the late time behaviour of the Bjorken flow. From the conditions of conformal invariance and energy-momentum conservation, we obtain the explicit expression for the energy density as a function of proper time in terms of Kasner parameters. The proper time dependence of the temperature and entropy ha…
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. A perturbative expansion, to first order in the constant acceleration parameter, of the Green functions involved and of the energy-momentum tensor is derived by means of the covariant geodesic point splitting procedure. The energy-momentum tensor is covariantly conserved and satisfies the expected relation between gauge-breaking and ghost parts.
From the beginning of the subject, calculations of quantum vacuum energies or Casimir energies have been plagued with two types of divergences: The total energy, which may be thought of as some sort of regularization of the zero-point energy, $\sum\frac12\hbarω$, seems manifestly divergent. And local energy densities, obtained from the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, $\langle T_{00}\rangle$, typically diverge near boundaries. The energy of interaction between distinct rigid bodies of whatever type is finite, corresponding to observable forces and torques between the bod…
Large extra dimensions lower the Planck scale to values soon accessible. Not only is the Planck scale the energy scale at which effects of modified gravity become important. The Planck length also acts as a minimal length in nature, providing a natural ultraviolet cutoff and a limit to the possible resolution of spacetime. In this paper we examine the influence of the minimal length on the Casimir energy between two plates.
A model of space-time foam, made by $N$ wormholes is considered. The Casimir energy leading to such a model is computed by means of the phase shift method which is in agreement with the variational approach used in Refs.[9-14]. The collection of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström wormholes are separately considered to represent the foam. The Casimir energy shows that the Reissner-Nordström wormholes cannot be used to represent the foam.
Bra-ket wormholes are non-trivial saddles in Euclidean gravity. They have to be sustained by negative Casimir energy of matter fields inside the throat. However, Casimir energy is very sensitive to boundary conditions and in presence of gauge symmetries one has to integrate over all possible boundary conditions for the matter fields, as they are a part of bra-ket wormhole moduli. For non- Abelian gauge groups the corresponding measure for the boundary conditions, which we call Casimir entropy, is non-trivial and it competes with the Casimir energy. We find that for large gauge groups this sign…
We use gauge/gravity duality to study the dynamics of strongly coupled gauge theories undergoing boost invariant expansion in an arbitrary number of space-time dimensions (D). By keeping the scale of the late-time energy density fixed, we explore the infinite-D limit and study the first few corrections to this expansion. In agreement with other studies, we find that the large-D dynamics are controlled by hydrodynamics and we use our computation to constrain the leading large-D dependence of a certain combination of transport coefficients up to 6-th order in gradients. Going beyond late time ph…
We argue that the instability of Euclidean Einstein gravity is an indication that the vacuum is non perturbative and contains a condensate of the metric tensor in a manner reminiscent of Yang-Mills theories. As a simple step toward the characterization of such a vacuum the value of the one-loop effective action is computed for Euclidean de Sitter spaces as a function of the curvature when the unstable conformal modes are held fixed. Two phases are found, one where the curvature is large and gravitons should be confined and another one which appears to be weakly coupled and tends to be flat. Th…
The influence of the gravity acceleration on the regularized energy-momentum tensor of the quantized electromagnetic field between two plane parallel conducting plates is derived. We use Fermi coordinates and work to first order in the constant acceleration parameter. A perturbative expansion, to this order, of the Green functions involved and of the energy-momentum tensor is derived by means of the covariant geodesic point splitting procedure. In correspondence to the Green functions satisfying mixed and gauge-invariant boundary conditions, and Ward identities, the energy-momentum tensor is c…
The role of bulk matter quantum effects (via the corresponding effective potential discussed on the example of conformal scalar) and of boundary matter quantum effects (via the conformal anomaly induced effective action) is considered in brane-world cosmology. Scenario is used where brane tension is not free parameter, and the initial bulk-brane classical action is defined by some considerations. The effective bulk-brane equations of motion are analyzed. The quantum creation of 4d de Sitter or Anti-de Sitter(AdS) brane Universe living in 5d AdS space is possible when quantum bulk and (or) bran…
$1/N^2$ corrections to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of charged leptons from glueballs at strong coupling are investigated in the framework of the gauge/gravity duality. The structure functions $F_1$ and $F_2$ (and also $F_L$) are studied at subleading order in the $1/N^2$ expansion, in terms of $q^2$ and the Bjorken parameter $x$. The relevant type IIB supergravity one-loop diagrams (which correspond to DIS with two-hadron final states) are studied in detail, while $n$-loop diagrams (corresponding to DIS with $(n+1)$-hadron final states) are briefly discussed. The $1/N^{2n}$ and $Λ^2/q^2$ d…
We compute the renormalised energy momentum tensor of a free scalar field coupled to gravity on an (n+1)-dimensional Einstein Static Universe (ESU), RxS^n, with arbitrary low energy effective operators (up to mass dimension n+1). A generic class of regulators is used, together with the Abel-Plana formula, leading to a manifestly regulator independent result. The general structure of the divergences is analysed to show that all the gravitational couplings (not just the cosmological constant) are renormalised for an arbitrary regulator. Various commonly used methods (damping function, point-spli…
We compute the one-loop Casimir energy of gravity and matter fields, obeying various boundary conditions, in 5-dimensional S^1/Z_2 and 6-dimensional T^2/Z_k orbifolds. We discuss the role of the Casimir energy in possible radius stabilization mechanisms and show that the presence of massive as well as massless fields can lead to minima with zero cosmological constant. In the 5-d orbifold, we also consider the case where kinetic terms localized at the fixed points are not small. We take into account their contribution to the Casimir energy and show that localized kinetic terms can also provide …
We consider the CANNEX (Casimir And Non-Newtonian force EXperiment) test of the quantum vacuum intended for measuring the gradient of the Casimir pressure between two flat parallel plates at large separations and constraining parameters of the chameleon model of dark energy in cosmology. A modification of the measurement scheme is proposed that allows simultaneous measurements of both the Casimir pressure and its gradient in one experiment. It is shown that with several improvements the CANNEX test will be capable to strengthen the constraints on the parameters of the Yukawa-type interaction b…
We study the AdS/CFT thermodynamics of the spatially isotropic counterpart of the Bjorken similarity flow in d-dimensional Minkowski space with d>=3, and of its generalisation to linearly expanding d-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with arbitrary values of the spatial curvature parameter k. The bulk solution is a nonstatic foliation of the generalised Schwarzschild-AdS black hole with a horizon of constant curvature k. The boundary matter is an expanding perfect fluid that satisfies the first law of thermodynamics for all values of the temperature and the spatial curvature, …
We investigate laboratory tests of dark energy theories which modify gravity in a way generalising the inverse power law chameleon models. We make use of the tomographic description of such theories which captures $f(R)$ models in the large curvature limit, the dilaton and the symmetron. We consider their effects in various experiments where the presence of a new scalar interaction may be uncovered. More precisely, we focus on the Casimir, Eot-wash and neutron experiments. We show that dilatons, symmetrons and generalised chameleon models are efficiently testable in the laboratory. For general…
We review some aspects of biaxially symmetric solutions to Vasiliev's equations in four dimensional spacetime with negative cosmological constant. The solutions, which activate bosonic fields of all spins, are constructed using gauge functions, projectors and deformed oscillators. The deformation parameters, which are formally gauge invariant, are related to generalized electric and magnetic charges in asymptotic weak-field regions. Alternatively, the solutions can be characterized in a dual fashion using zero-form charges which are higher-spin Casimir invariants built from combinations of cur…
In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the gravity dual of a heavy-ion-like collision in a variant of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. We provide a gravity dual picture of the entire process using a model where the scattering process creates initially a holographic shower in bulk AdS. The subsequent gravitational fall leads to a moving black hole that is gravity dual to the expanding and cooling heavy-ion fireball. The front of the fireball cools at the rate of $1/τ$, while the core cools as $1/\sqrtτ$ from a cosmological-like argument. The cooling is faster than Bjorken cooling. The firebal…
Thermodynamics of five-dimensional Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter (SAdS) and SdS black holes in the particular model of higher derivative gravity is considered. The free energy, mass (thermodynamical energy) and entropy are evaluated. There exists the parameters region where BH entropy is zero or negative. The arguments are given that corresponding BH solutions are not stable. We also present the FRW-equations of motion of time (space)-like branes in SAdS or SdS BH background. The properties of dual CFT are discussed and it is shown that it has zero Casimir energy when BH entropy (effective grav…
It has been speculated that the zero-point energy of the vacuum, regularized due to the existence of a suitable ultraviolet cut-off scale, could be the source of the non-vanishing cosmological constant that is driving the present acceleration of the universe. We show that the presence of such a cut-off can significantly alter the results for the Casimir force between parallel conducting plates and even lead to repulsive Casimir force when the plate separation is smaller than the cut-off scale length. Using the current experimental data we rule out the possibility that the observed cosmological…
