We study the Casimir effect in the framework of Standard Model Extension (SME). Employing the weak field approximation, the vacuum energy density ε and the pressure for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates in a static spacetime background are calculated. In particular, through the analysis of ε, we speculate a constraint on the Lorentz-violating term s00 which is lower than the bounds currently available for this quantity. After that, the correction to the pressure given by the gravitational sector of SME is presented. Finally, we remark that our outcome has an intrinsic validity that goes beyond the treated case of a point-like source of gravity.
This paper investigates the Casimir Energy modifications due to the Lorentz-violating CPT-even contribution in an extension of the scalar QED. We have considered the complex scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions between two parallel plates separated by a small distance. An appropriate tensor parametrization allowed us to study the Casimir effect in three setups: isotropic, anisotropic parity-odd, and anisotropic parity-even. We have shown that the Lorentz-violating contributions promote increased Casimir energy for both the isotropic and anisotropic parity-odd configurations. H…
In this paper we consider a Lorentz-breaking extension of the theory for a real massive scalar quantum field in the region between two large parallel plates, with our manner to break the Lorentz symmetry is CPT-even, aether-like. For this system we calculated the Casimir energy considering different boundary conditions. It turns out to be that the Casimir energy strongly depends on the direction of the constant vector implementing the Lorentz symmetry breaking, as well as on the boundary conditions.
The standard model and general relativity are local Lorentz invariants. However it is possible that at Planck scale there may be a breakdown of Lorentz symmetry. Models with Lorentz violation are constructed using Standard Model Extension (SME). Here gravitational sector of the SME is considered to analyze the Lorentz violation in Gravitoelectromagnetism (GEM). Using the energy-momentum tensor, the Stefan-Boltzmann law and Casimir effect are calculated at finite temperature to ascertain the level of local Lorentz violation. Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism is used to introduce temperature…
In this paper, we study the electromagnetic Casimir effects in the context of Lorentz symmetry violations. Two distinct approaches are considered: the first one is based on Horava-Lifshitz methodology, which explicitly presents a space-time anisotropy, while the second is a model that includes higher-derivatives in the field strength tensor and a preferential direction in the space-time. We assume that the electromagnetic field obeys the standard boundary conditions on two large parallel plates. Our main objectives are to investigate how the Casimir energy and pressure are modified in both Lor…
Following a field-theoretical approach, we study the scalar Casimir effect upon a perfectly conducting cylindrical shell in the presence of spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. The scalar field is modeled by a Lorentz-breaking extension of the theory for a real scalar quantum field in the bulk regions. The corresponding Green's functions satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the cylindrical shell are derived explicitly. We express the Casimir pressure (i.e. the vacuum expectation value of the normal-normal component of the stress-energy tensor) as a suitable second-order differential o…
We determine the effect of Lorentz invariance violation in the vacuum energy and stress between two parallel plates separated by a distance $L$, in the presence of a massive real scalar field. We parametrize the Lorentz-violation in terms of a symmetric tensor $h^{\,μν}$ that represents a constant background. Through the Green's function method, we obtain the global Casimir energy, the Casimir force between the plates and the energy density in a closed analytical form without resorting to perturbative methods. With regards to the pressure, we find that $\mathcal{F}_c(L)=\mathcal{F}_0(\tilde{L}…
Violation of the Lorentz symmetry has important effects on physical quantities including field propagators. Therefore, in addition to the leading order, the sub-leading order of quantities may be modified. In this paper, we calculate the next to leading (NLO) radiative corrections to the Casimir energy in the presence of two perfectly conducting parallel plates for $ϕ^4$ theory with a Lorentz-breaking extension. We do the renormalization and investigate these NLO corrections for three distinct directions of the Lorentz violation; temporal direction, parallel and perpendicular to the plates.
In this paper I study the Casimir effect caused by a charged and massive scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like manner. I investigate the case of a scalar field that satisfies Dirichlet or mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of very large plane parallel plates. The case of Neumann boundary conditions is straightforward and will not be examined in detail. I use the $ζ$-function regularization technique to study the effect of a constant magnetic field, orthogonal to the plates, on the Casimir energy and pressure. I investigate the cases of a ti…
We review new constraints on the Yukawa-type corrections to Newtonian gravity obtained recently from gravitational experiments and from the measurements of the Casimir force. Special attention is paid to the constraints following from the most precise dynamic determination of the Casimir pressure between the two parallel plates by means of a micromechanical torsional oscillator. The possibility of setting limits on the predictions of chameleon field theories using the results of gravitational experiments and Casimir force measurements is discussed.
A Lorentz symmetry violation aether-type theoretical model is considered to investigate the Casimir effect and the generation of topological mass associated with a self-interacting massive scalar fields obeying Dirichlet, Newman and mixed boundary conditions on two large and parallel plates. By adopting the path integral approach we found the effective potential at one- and two-loop corrections which provides both the energy density and topological mass when taken in the ground state of the scalar field. We then analyse how these quantities are affected by the Lorentz symmetry violation and co…
We study the Casimir effect in the classical geometry of two parallel conductive plates, separated by a distance $L$, for a Lorentz-breaking extension of the scalar field theory. The Lorentz-violating part of the theory is characterized by the term $λ\left( u \cdot \partial ϕ\right )^{2}$, where the parameter $λ$ and the background four-vector $u ^μ$ codify Lorentz symmetry violation. We use Green's function techniques to study the local behavior of the vacuum stress-energy tensor in the region between the plates. Closed analytical expressions are obtained for the Casimir energy and pressure. …
In this work I investigate the finite temperature Casimir effect due to a massive and charged scalar field that breaks Lorentz invariance in a CPT-even, aether-like way. I study the cases of Dirichlet and mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates. I will not examine the case of Neumann boundary conditions since it produces the same results as Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main tool used in this investigation is the $ζ$-function technique that allows me to obtain the Helmoltz free energy and Casimir pressure in the presence of a uniform magnetic field perpe…
The renormalization program in every renormalized theory should be run consistently with the type of boundary condition imposed on quantum fields. To maintain this consistency, the counterterms usually appear in the position-dependent form. In the present study, using such counterterms, we calculated the radiative correction to the Casimir energy for massive and massless Lorentz-violating scalar field constrained with Dirichlet boundary condition between two parallel plates in d spatial dimensions. In the calculation procedure, to remove infinities appearing in the vacuum energies, the box sub…

We report stronger constraints on the parameters of Yukawa-type corrections to Newtonian gravity from measurements of the lateral Casimir force between sinusoidally corrugated surfaces of a sphere and a plate. In the interaction range from 1.6 to 14 nm the strengthening of previously known high confidence constraints up to a factor of $2.4\times 10^7$ is achieved using these measurements. It is shown that the replacement of a plane plate with a corrugated one in the measurements of the normal Casimir force by means of an atomic force microscope would result in the strengthening of respective h…
The CPT-even sector of the standard model extension amounts to extending Maxwell electrodynamics by a gauge invariant term of the form $- \frac{1}{4} (k _{F}) _{αβμν} F ^{αβ} F ^{μν}$, where the Lorentz-violating (LV) background tensor $(k _{F}) _{αβμν}$ possesses the symmetries of the Riemann tensor. The electrodynamics in ponderable media is still described by Maxwell equations in matter with modified constitutive relations which depend on the coefficients for Lorentz violation. We study the effects of this theory on the Casimir force between two semi-infinite ponderable media. The Fresnel c…
In this paper, we evaluate the Casimir energy and pressure for a massive fermionic field confined in the region between two parallel plates. In order to implement this confinement we impose the standard MIT bag boundary on the plates for the fermionic field. In this paper we consider a quantum field theory model with a CPT even, aether-like Lorentz symmetry violation. It turns out that the fermionic Casimir energy and pressure depend on the direction of the constant vector that implements the Lorentz symmetry breaking.
In this paper, we analyze the fermionic Casimir effects associated with a massless quantum field in the context of Lorentz symmetry violation approach based on Horava-Lifshitz methodology. In order to obtain these observables, we impose the standard MIT bag boundary condition on the fields on two large and parallel plates. Our main objectives are to investigate how the Casimir energy and pressure depend on the parameter associated with the breaking of Lorentz symmetry.
In this paper the effective potential approach in quantum field theory is used in order to investigate self-interaction loop correction to the Casimir energy density and generation of topological mass for both massless and massive real scalar fields. It is assumed that the scalar field obeys a helix boundary condition. In addition, it is also considered a CPT-even aether-type violation of the Lorentz symmetry. In the absence of the Lorentz violation we obtain analytical expressions for the loop correction to the Casimir energy density and to the mass of the scalar field. The same expressions a…
The Casimir effect is one of the most direct manifestations of the existence of the vacuum quantum fluctuations, discovered by H. B Casimir in 1948. On the other hand, Lorentz invariance is one of the main and basic concepts in special relativity, which states that, the laws of physics are invariant under Lorentz transformation. In this work, we calculate the corrections imposed by LIV on Casimir effect (force). This may provide a direct probe to test LIV in nature.
We obtain constraints on parameters of the Yukawa-type corrections to Newton's gravitational law from measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force between surfaces coated with ferromagnetic metal Ni and from measurements of the Casimir force between Au-coated sinusoidally corrugated surfaces at various angles between corrugations. It is shown that constraints following from the experiment with magnetic surfaces are slightly weaker than currently available strongest constraints, but benefit from increased reliability and independence of systematic effects. The constraints derived from the e…
The Casimir force between two conducting planes is considered in both the electromagnetic and scalar field cases. This is done by the usual summation over energy eigenmodes of the system as well as by a calculation of the stress tensor in the region between the planes. The latter case requires that careful attention be given to singular operator products, an issue which is accommodated here by invoking the point separation method in conjunction with a scalar cutoff. This is shown to yield cutoff dependent and divergent contributions to the Casimir pressure which are dependent on the separation…
We investigate the Casimir effect, due to the confinement of a scalar field in a $D$-dimensional sphere, with Lorentz symmetry breaking. The Lorentz-violating part of the theory is described by the term $λ(u \cdot \partial ϕ) ^{2}$, where the parameter $λ$ and the background vector $u^μ$ codify the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry. We compute, as a function of $D$, the Casimir stress by using Green's function techniques for two specific choices of the vector $u ^μ$. In the timelike case, $u ^μ = (1,0,...,0)$, the Casimir stress can be factorized as the product of the Lorentz invariant result time…
In this paper, we investigate the thermal effect on the Casimir energy associated with a massive scalar quantum field confined between two large parallel plates in a CPT-even, aether-like Lorentz-breaking scalar field theory. In order to do that we consider a nonzero chemical potential for the scalar field assumed to be in thermal equilibrium at some finite temperature. The calculations of the energies are developed by using the Abel-Plana summation formula, and the corresponding results are analyzed in several asymptotic regimes of the parameters of the system, like mass, separations between …
The Casimir effect is one of the most remarkable consequences of the non-zero vacuum energy predicted by quantum field theory. In this paper we use a local approach to study the Lorentz violation effects of the minimal standard model extension on the Casimir force between two parallel conducting plates in the vacuum. Using a perturbative method similar to that used for obtaining the Born series for the scattering amplitudes in quantum mechanics, we compute, at leading order in the Lorentz-violating coefficients, the relevant Green's function which satisfies given boundary conditions. The stand…

In this paper we examine Casimir effect in the case of tachyonic field, which is connected with particles with negative four-momentum square. We consider here only the case of one dimensional, scalar field. In order to describe tachyonic field, we use the absolute synchronization scheme preserving Lorentz invariance. The renormalized vacuum energy is calculated by means of Abel-Plana formula. Finaly, the Casimir energy and Casimir force as the functions of distance are obtained. In order to compare the resulting formula with the standard one, we calculate the Casimir energy and Casimir force f…
The Casimir interaction in a stack of equally spaced infinitely thin layers is investigated within the zero-frequency mode summation method. The response properties are considered to be described by a constant conductivity or by a Drude-Lorentz model with a finite set of oscillators consistent with the optical characteristics for graphite. It is found that the asymptotic distance dependence is affected significantly by the specific response. While the energy is $\sim 1/d^3$ for the constant conductivity model, the energy exhibits fractional dependence $\sim 1/d^{5/2}$ for the Drude-Lorentz des…
One of the challenges in connecting higher dimensional theories to cosmology is stabilization of the moduli fields. We investigate the role of a Lorentz violating vector field in the context of stabilization. Specifically, we compute the one loop Casimir energy in Randall-Sundrum 5-dimensional (non-supersymmetric) S^1/ Z_2 orbifolds resulting from the interaction of a real scalar field with periodic boundary conditions with a Lorentz violating vector field. We find that the result is an enhanced attractive Casimir force. Hence, for stability, positive contributions to the Casimir force from br…
Lorentz invariance is one of the fundamental principles of physics, and, as such, it must be experimentally tested. The purpose of this work is to obtain, within the Standard-Model Extension, the dynamics of a Lorentz-violating spinor in a uniform newtonian gravitational field. This is achieved by treating the spinor as a test particle and introducing the gravitational field through a uniformly accelerated observer. The nonrelativistic hamiltonian is obtained and some experimental consequences are discussed. One unexpected outcome of this work is that the gravitational field helps disentanglin…
By the thermofield dynamics (TFD) formalism we obtain the energy-momentum tensor for the Electromagnetism with Lorentz Breaking Even term of the Standard Model Extended (SME) Sector in a topology $S^{1}\times S^{1}\times R^{2}$. We carry out the compactification by a generalized TFD-Bogoliubov transformation that is used to define a renormalized energy-momentum tensor, and the Casimir energy and pressure at finite temperature are then derived. A comparative analysis with the electromagnetic case is developed, and we remark the influence of the background in the traditional Casimir effect.
We consider the CANNEX (Casimir And Non-Newtonian force EXperiment) test of the quantum vacuum intended for measuring the gradient of the Casimir pressure between two flat parallel plates at large separations and constraining parameters of the chameleon model of dark energy in cosmology. A modification of the measurement scheme is proposed that allows simultaneous measurements of both the Casimir pressure and its gradient in one experiment. It is shown that with several improvements the CANNEX test will be capable to strengthen the constraints on the parameters of the Yukawa-type interaction b…
In this paper we consider a Lorentz-breaking scalar field theory within the Horava-Lifshtz approach. We investigate the changes that a space-time anisotropy produces in the Casimir effect. A massless real quantum scalar field is considered in two distinct situations: between two parallel plates and inside a rectangular two-dimensional box. In both cases we have adopted specific boundary conditions on the field at the boundary. As we shall see, the energy and the Casimir force strongly depends on the parameter associated with the breaking of Lorentz symmetry and also on the boundary conditions.
Recently a great deal of interest in field theories formulated in a Lorentz violating framework has been developed. Here the Very Special Relativity (VSR) is considered. The main aspect in the VSR proposal is that laws of physics are invariant under the subgroups of the Poincaré group preserving the basic elements of special relativity. An important point is that the photon acquires a mass. In this context, the energy-momentum tensor for the electromagnetic field is calculated. From this, the Stefan-Boltzmann law and Casimir effect at finite temperature in VSR are obtained. The effects of temp…
In this paper, we study the Casimir force for a class of Lorentzian nonlocal field theories. These theories include a continuum of massive excitations. In this regard, the effect of continuum massive modes on Casimir force is of interest. We focus on the simplest case of two absorbing parallel planes in 1+1 dimensions, and we show that unlike local field theories, the thickness of the absorbing "walls" changes the value of Casimir force.
