We modify the definition of l^1-homology and argue why our definition is more adequate than the classical one. While we cannot reconstruct the classical l^1-homology from the new definition for various reasons, we can reconstruct its Hausdorffification so that no information concerning semi-norms is lost. We obtain an axiomatic characterization of our l^1-homology as a universal delta-functor and prove that it is pre-dual to our definition of bounded cohomology. We thus answer a question raised by Loeh in her thesis. Moreover, we prove Gromov's theorem and the Matsumoto-Morita conjecture in our context.
We determine the Hochschild homology and cohomology of the generalized Weyl algebras of rank one which are of 'quantum' type in all but a few exceptional cases.
The ${\ell}^1$-convolution algebra of a semilattice is known to have trivial cohom ology in degrees 1,2 and 3 whenever the coefficient bimodule is symmetric. We ex tend this result to all cohomology groups of degree $\geq 1$ with symmetric coef ficients. Our techniques prove a stronger splitting result, namely that the spli tting can be made natural with respect to the underlying semilattice.
We provide and study an equivariant theory of group (co)homology of a group G with coefficients in a gamma-equivariant G-module A, when a separate group "gamma" acts on G and A, generalizing the classical Eilenberg-MacLane (co)homology of groups. Relationship with equivariant cohomology of topological spaces is established and application to algebraic K-theory is given.
We study Tate-Hochschild homology and cohomology for a two-sided Noetherian Gorenstein algebra. These (co)homology groups are defined for all degrees, non-negative as well as negative, and they agree with the usual Hochschild (co)homology groups for all degrees larger than the injective dimension of the algebra. We prove certain duality theorems relating the Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups in positive degree to those in negative degree, in the case where the algebra is Frobenius. We explicitly compute all Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups for certain classes of Frobenius algebras, namely…
We prove that for "most" closed 3-dimensional manifolds $M$, the existence of a closed non singular one-form in a given cohomology class $u\in H^1 (M,\bf R)$ is equivalent to the fact that every twisted Alexander polynomial $Δ^H(M,u) \in {\bf Z}[G/\ker u]$ associated to a normal subgroup with finite index $H < π_1(M)$ has a unitary $u$-minimal term.
In this paper, the Lawson homology and morphic cohomology are defined on the Chow motives. We also define the rational coefficient Lawson homology and morphic cohomology of the Chow motives of finite quotient projective varieties. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for the Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth complex projective surface. Further discussion concerning generic finite maps is given. As a result, we give examples of self-product of smooth projective curves with nontrivial Griffiths groups by using a result of Ceresa.
Twisted $K$-homology corresponds to $D$-branes in string theory. In this paper we compare two different models of geometric twisted $K$-homology and get their equivalence. Moreover, we give another description of geometric twisted $K$-homology using bundle gerbes. We establish some properties of geometric twisted $K$-homology. In the last part we construct $T$-duality isomorphism for geometric twisted $K$-homology.
We consider smooth actions of totally disconnected groups on simplicial complexes and compare different equivariant cohomology groups associated to such actions. Our main result is that the bivariant equivariant cohomology theory introduced by Baum and Schneider can be described using equivariant periodic cyclic homology. This provides a new approach to the construction of Baum and Schneider as well as a computation of equivariant periodic cyclic homology for a natural class of examples. In addition we discuss the relation between cosheaf homology and equivariant Bredon homology. Since the the…
We present a detailed computation of the cyclic and the Hochschild homology and cohomology of generic and 3-Calabi-Yau homogeneous down-up algebras. This family was defined by Benkart and Roby in their study of differential posets. Our calculations are completely explicit, by making use of the Koszul bimodule resolution and arguments similar to those used by the second and third authors for Yang-Mills algebras.
We discuss Suslin's singular homology and cohomology. In the first half we examine the p-part in characteristic p, and the situation over non-algebraically closed fields. In the second half we focus on finite base fields. We study finite generation properties, and give a modified definition which behaves like a homology theory: in degree zero it is a copy of Z for each connected component, in degree one it is related to the abelianized (tame) fundamental group, even for singular schemes, and it is expected to be finitely generated in general.
In this paper we develop homology and cohomology theories which play the same role for real projective varieties that Lawson homology and morphic cohomology play for projective varieties respectively. They have nice properties such as the existence of long exact sequences, the homotopy invariance, the Lawson suspension property, the homotopy property for bundle projection, the splitting principle, the cup product, the slant product and the natural transformations to singular theories. The Friedlander-Lawson moving lemma is used to prove a duality theorem between these two theories. This dualit…
We perform Hochschild homology calculations in the algebro-geometric setting of motives. The motivic Hochschild homology coefficient ring contains torsion classes which arise from the mod-$p$ motivic Steenrod algebra and from generating functions on the natural numbers with finite non-empty support. Under the Betti realization, we recover Bökstedt's calculation of the topological Hochschild homology of finite prime fields.
We use the Beilinson $t$-structure on filtered complexes and the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem to construct filtrations on the negative cyclic and periodic cyclic homologies of a scheme $X$ with graded pieces given by the Hodge-completion of the derived de Rham cohomology of $X$. Such filtrations have previously been constructed by Loday in characteristic zero and by Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze for $p$-complete negative cyclic and periodic cyclic homology in the quasisyntomic case.
We develop an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence to compute Bredon cohomology of spaces with an action of a group given as a pullback. Using several other spectral sequences, and positive results on the Baum-Connes Conjecture, we are able to compute Equivariant K-theory and K-Homology of the reduced group C*-algebra of a 6-dimensional crystallographic group $Γ$ introduced by Vafa and Witten. We also use positive results on the Farrell-Jones Conjecture to give a vanishing result for the negative algebraic K-theory of the integral group ring of $Γ$.
We study a noncommutative version of the infinitesimal site of Grothendieck. A theorem of Grothendieck establishes that the cohomology of the structure sheaf on the infinitesimal topology of a scheme of characteristic zero is de Rham cohomology. We prove that, for the noncommutative infinitesimal topology of an associative algebra over a field of characteristic zero, the cohomology of the structure sheaf modulo commutators is periodic cyclic cohomology. We also compute the noncommutative infinitesimal cohomology of other sheaves. For example we show that hypercohomology with coefficients in $K…
We examine various versions of oriented cohomology and Borel-Moore homology theories in algebraic geometry and put these two together in the setting of an "oriented duality theory", a generalization of Bloch-Ogus twisted duality theory. This combines and exends work of Panin and Mocanasu. We apply this to give a Borel-Moore homology version $MGL'_{*,*}$ of Voevodsky's $MGL^{*,*}$-theory, and a natural map $\vartheta:Ω_*\to MGL'_{2*,*}$, where $Ω_*$ is the algebraic cobordism theory defined by Levine-Morel. We conjecture that $\vartheta$ is an isomorphism and describe a program for proving this…
There is a Chern character from K-theory to negative cyclic homology. We show that it preserves the decomposition coming from Adams operations, at least in characteristic 0. This is done by using infinitesimal cohomology to reduce to the case of a nilpotent ideal (which had been established by Cathelineau some time ago).
We prove a blow-up formula for cyclic homology which we use to show that infinitesimal $K$-theory satisfies $cdh$-descent. Combining that result with some computations of the $cdh$-cohomology of the sheaf of regular functions, we verify a conjecture of Weibel predicting the vanishing of algebraic $K$-theory of a scheme in degrees less than minus the dimension of the scheme, for schemes essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic zero.
Let $V$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with residue field $k$ and with fraction field $K$ of characteristic 0. We clarify the analysis behind the Monsky--Washnitzer completion of a commutative $V$-algebra using spectral radius estimates for bounded subsets in complete bornological $V$-algebras. This leads us to a functorial chain complex for commutative $k$-algebras that computes Berthelot's rigid cohomology. This chain complex is related to the periodic cyclic homology of certain complete bornological $V$-algebras.
We compute Hochschild homology and cohomology of a class of generalized Weyl algebras (for short GWA, defined by Bavula in St.Petersbourg Math. Journal 1999 4(1) pp. 71-90). Examples of such algebras are the n-th Weyl algebras, U(sl_2), primitive quotients of U(sl_2), and subalgebras of invariants of these algebras under finite cyclic groups of automorphisms. We answer a question of Bavula - Jordan (Trans. A.M.S. 353 (2) 2001 pp. 769 -794) concerning the generator of the group of automorphism of a GWA. We also explain previous results on the invariants of Weyl algebras and of primitive quotien…
The origin and interplay of products and dualities in algebraic (co)homology theories is ascribed to a $\times_A$-Hopf algebra structure on the relevant universal enveloping algebra. This provides a unified treatment for example of results by Van den Bergh about Hochschild (co)homology and by Huebschmann about Lie-Rinehart (co)homology.
We study the curved Koszul duality theory for associative algebras presented by quadratic-linear-constant (QLC) relations. As an application, we investigate the cyclic (co)homology of a QLC algebra and its Koszul dual curved DG algebra, and extend a result due to Feigin and Tsygan. We also study a commutative/Lie analog of this curved Koszul duality theory.
Building on work of Livernet and Richter, we prove that E_n-homology and E_n-cohomology of a commutative algebra with coefficients in a symmetric bimodule can be interpreted as functor homology and cohomology. Furthermore we show that the associated Yoneda algebra is trivial.
Following the idea of an invariant differential complex, we construct general-type cyclic modules that provide the common denominator of known cyclic theories. The cyclicity of these modules is governed by Hopf-algebraic structures. We prove that the existence of a cyclic operator forces a modification of the Yetter-Drinfeld compatibility condition leading to the concept of a stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld module. This module plays the role of the space of coefficients in the thus obtained cyclic cohomology of module algebras and coalgebras, and the cyclic homology and cohomology of comodule alge…
Applying recent results by Lowen-Van den Bergh we show that Hochschild cohomology is preserved under Koszul-Moore duality as a Gerstenhaber algebra. More precisely, the corresponding Hochschild complexes are linked by a quasi-isomorphism of B-infinity-algebras.
We revisit Spakula's uniform K-homology, construct the external product for it and use this to deduce homotopy invariance of uniform K-homology. We define uniform K-theory and on manifolds of bounded geometry we give an interpretation of it via vector bundles of bounded geometry. We further construct a cap product with uniform K-homology and prove Poincare duality between uniform K-theory and uniform K-homology on spin-c manifolds of bounded geometry.
Braces and linear cycle sets are algebraic structures playing a major role in the classification of involutive set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. This paper introduces two versions of their (co)homology theories. These theories mix the Harrison (co)homology for the abelian group structure and the (co)homology theory for general cycle sets, developed earlier by the authors. Different classes of brace extensions are completely classified in terms of second cohomology groups.
We define cup coproducts for Hopf cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras and for its dual theory. We show that for universal enveloping algebras and group algebras our coproduct recovers the standard coproducts on Lie algebra homology and group homology, respectively.
We give a description of cyclic cohomology and its pairing with K-groups for 2-cocycle deformation of algebras graded over discrete groups. The proof relies on a realization of monodromy for the Gauss-Manin connection on periodic cyclic cohomology in terms of the cup product action of group cohomology.
We generalize a recent result by J.F. Carlson to finite tensor categories having finitely generated cohomology. Specifically, we show that if the Krull dimension of the cohomology ring is sufficiently large, then there exist infinitely many non-isomorphic and nontrivial bounded complexes of projective objects, and with small homology. We also prove a version for finite dimensional algebras with finitely generated cohomology.
In this work, we compute the topological coHochschild homology (coTHH) of interesting coalgebras such as the Steenrod algebra spectrum. For this, we start by extending the Hess-Shipley definition of coTHH to $\infty$-categories, following the Nikolaus-Scholze approach to THH. Furthermore, we prove that coTHH of what we call quasi-proper coalgebras can be obtained from THH via Spanier-Whitehead duality which provides further insight into coTHH and its relationship to THH.
We construct a minimal projective bimodule resolution for every finite dimensional quantum complete intersection of codimension two. Then we use this resolution to compute both the Hochschild cohomology and homology for such an algebra. In particular, we show that the cohomology vanishes in high degrees, while the homology is always nonzero.
We discuss duality pairings on integral étale motivic cohomology groups of regular and proper schemes over algebraically closed fields, local fields, finite fields, and arithmetic schemes.
Using factorization homology techniques, we give a simple proof of the action of Kontsevich and Soibelman operad on the pair consisting of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology. The proof obviously extends to higher Hochschild cohomology and factorization (also called chiral) homology. Note that our result works in categories of chain complexes but also in categories of modules over a commutative ring spectrum.
Certain cocycles constructed by Connes are characters of $p$-summable Fredholm modules. In this article, we establish some consequences of the universal properties which these characters enjoy. Our main technical result is that the entire cyclic cohomology of the p-th Schatten ideal L^p (respectively, homology) is independent of p and isomorphic to the entire cyclic cohomology (respectively, homology) of the ideal of trace class operators L^1.
We define a version of Hochschild homology and cohomology suitable for a class of algebras admitting compatible actions of bialgebras, called module algebras. We show this (co)homology, called Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology, can also be defined as a derived functor on the category of representations of a crossed product algebra. We investigate the relationship of our theory with Hopf cyclic cohomology and also prove Morita invariance of the Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology.
Based on the ideas of Cuntz and Quillen, we give a simple construction of cyclic homology of unital algebras in terms of the noncommutative de Rham complex and a certain differential similar to the equivariant de Rham differential. We describe the Connes exact sequence in this setting. We define equivariant Deligne cohomology and construct, for each n > 0, a natural map from cyclic homology of an algebra to the GL_n-equivariant Deligne cohomology of the variety of n-dimensional representations of that algebra. The bridge between cyclic homology and equivariant Deligne cohomology is provided by…
We consider the Tate cohomology of the circle group acting on the topological Hochschild homology of schemes. We show that in the case of a scheme smooth and proper over a finite field, this cohomology theory naturally gives rise to the cohomological interpretation of the Hasse-Weil zeta function by regularized determinants envisioned by Deninger. In this case, the periodicity of the zeta function is reflected by the periodicity of said cohomology theory, whereas neither is periodic in general.
We study the Poisson (co)homology of the algebra of truncated polynomials in two variables viewed as the semi-classical limit of a quantum complete intersection studied by Bergh and Erdmann. We show in particular that the Poisson cohomology ring of such a Poisson algebra is isomorphic to the Hochschild cohomology ring of the corresponding quantum complete intersection.
We provide a formula for the change of the dimension of the first Hoch\-schild cohomology vector space of bound quiver algebras when adding new arrows. For this purpose we show that there exists a short exact sequence which relates the first cohomology vector spaces of the algebras to the first relative cohomology. Moreover, we show that the first Hochschild homologies are isomorphic when adding new arrows.
We construct spectral sequences in the framework of Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology for functors between small categories and analyze particular cases including Grothendieck fibrations. We also give applications to more classical cohomology and homology theories including Hochschild-Mitchell cohomology and those studied before by Watts, Roos, Quillen and others.
In this article, the cyclic homology theory of formal deformation quantizations of the convolution algebra associated to a proper etale Lie groupoid is studied. We compute the Hochschild cohomology of the convolution algebra and express it in terms of alternating multi-vector fields on the associated inertia groupoid. We introduce a noncommutative Poisson homology whose computation enables us to determine the Hochschild homology of formal deformations of the convolution algebra. Then it is shown that the cyclic (co)homology of such formal deformations can be described by an appropriate sheaf c…
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classi…
