Minkowski Space is the simplest four-dimensional Lorentzian Manifold, being topologically trivial and globally flat, and hence the simplest model of spacetime--from a General-Relativistic point of view. But this does not mean that it is altogether structurally trivial. In fact, it has a very rich structure, parts of which will be spelled out in detail in this contribution. This will contain elementary aspects of affine spaces, various paths to the Poincare group, the lattices of causally and chronologically complete regions, and last but not least, the Noether-Herglotz theorem.
A list of all possible causal relations in the $2$-dimensional Minkowski space $M$ is exhausted, based on the duality between timelike and spacelike in this particular case, and thirty topologies are introduced, all of them encapsulating the causal structure of $M$. Generalisations of these results are discussed, as well as their significance in a discussion on spacetime singularities.
We present a novel family of Yang-Mills solutions, with gauge group SO(1,3), on Minkowski space that are geometrically distinguished into two classes, viz. interior and exterior of the lightcone. We achieve this by foliating the former with SO(1,3)/SO(3) cosets and the latter with SO(1,3)/SO(1,2) cosets and analytically solving the Yang-Mills equation of an SO(1,3)-invariant gauge field. The resulting fields and their stress-energy tensor, when translated to the Minkowski space, diverge at the lightcone, but we demonstrate how this stress-energy tensor could be regularised due to its unique al…
Recent results obtained in $κ$-Poincaré invariant gauge theories on $κ$-Minkowski space are reviewed and commented. A Weyl quantization procedure can be applied to convolution algebras to derive a convenient star product. For such a star product, gauge invariant polynomial action functional depending on the curvature exists only in 5 dimensions. The corresponding noncommutative differential calculus and the related connection are twisted together with the BRST structure linked to the gauge invariance. Phenomenological consequences stemming from the existence of one extra dimension are commente…
We consider the Lie group $\mathbb{R}^D_κ$ generated by the Lie algebra of $κ$-Minkowski space. Imposing the invariance of the metric under the pull-back of diffeomorphisms induced by right translations in the group, we show that a unique right invariant metric is associated with $\mathbb{R}^D_κ$. This metric coincides with the metric of de Sitter space-time. We analyze the structure of unitary representations of the group $\mathbb{R}^D_κ$ relevant for the realization of the non-commutative $κ$-Minkowski space by embedding into $(2D-1)$-dimensional Heisenberg algebra. Using a suitable set of g…
We study the Lie bialgebra structures that can be built on the one-dimensional central extension of the Poincaré and (A)dS algebras in (1+1) dimensions. These central extensions admit more than one interpretation, but the simplest one is that they describe the symmetries of (the noncommutative deformation of) an Abelian gauge theory, $U(1)$ or $SO(2)$ on the (1+1) dimensional Minkowski or (A)dS spacetime. We show that this highlights the possibility that the algebra of functions on the gauge bundle becomes noncommutative. This is a new way in which the Coleman-Mandula theorem could be circumve…
We present an elementary system of axioms for the geometry of Minkowski spacetime. It strikes a balance between a simple and streamlined set of axioms and the attempt to give a direct formalization in first-order logic of the standard account of Minkowski spacetime in [Maudlin 2012] and [Malament, unpublished]. It is intended for future use in the formalization of physical theories in Minkowski spacetime. The choice of primitives is in the spirit of [Tarski 1959]: a predicate of betwenness and a four place predicate to compare the square of the relativistic intervals. Minkowski spacetime is de…
Hyperbolicity of the time-like extremal surfaces in minkowski spaces
本文证明了在图的情形下,$1+n+m$维Minkowski空间中的$1+n$维类时极值曲面可以用一个结构非常简单(类似于无粘Burgers方程)的对称双曲偏微分方程组$$ \partial\_t W + \sum\_{j=1}^n A\_j(W)\partial\_{x\_j} W =0,\;\;\;W:\;(t,x)\in\mathbb{R}^{1+n}\rightarrow W(t,x)\in\mathbb{R}^{n+m+\binom{m+n}{n}},$$来描述,其中每个$A\_j(W)$只是一个线性依赖于$W$的对称矩阵$\big(n+m+\binom{m+n}{n}\big)\times\big(n+m+\binom{m+n}{n}\big)$.
The emergence of the concept of a causal fermion system is revisited and further investigated for the vacuum Dirac equation in Minkowski space. After a brief recap of the Dirac equation and its solution space, in order to allow for the effects of a possibly nonstandard structure of spacetime at the Planck scale, a regularization by a smooth cutoff in momentum space is introduced, and its properties are discussed. Given an ensemble of solutions, we recall the construction of a local correlation function, which realizes spacetime in terms of operators. It is shown in various situations that the …
We prove the integrability and superintegrability of a family of natural Hamiltonians which includes and generalises those studied in some literature, originally defined on the 2D Minkowski space. Some of the new Hamiltonians are a perfect analogy of the well-known superintegrable system on the Euclidean plane proposed by Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and they are defined on Minkowski space, as well as on all other 2D manifolds of constant curvature, Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian. We show also how the application of the coupling-constant-metamorphosis technique allows us to obtain new superin…
