We provide a new description of the scaling limit of dimer fluctuations in homogeneous Aztec diamonds via the intrinsic conformal structure of a space-like maximal surface in the three-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$. This surface naturally appears as the limit of the graphs of origami maps associated to symmetric t-embeddings of Aztec diamonds, fitting the framework recently developed in arXiv:2109.06272.
We compute the probability of any local pattern at an arbitrary position in a random dimer configuration in a square grid with an Aztec-diamond boundary.
We study random domino tilings of a Double Aztec diamond, a region consisting of two overlapping Aztec diamonds. The random tilings give rise to two discrete determinantal point processes called the K-and L-particle processes. The correlation kernel of the K-particles was derived in Adler, Johansson and van Moerbeke (2011), who used it to study the limit process of the K-particles with different weights for horizontal and vertical dominos. Let the size of both, the Double Aztec diamond and the overlap, tend to infinity such that the two arctic ellipses just touch; then they show that the fluct…
We consider asymtotics of a domino tiling model on a class of domains which we call rectangular Aztec diamonds. We prove the Law of Large Numbers for the corresponding height functions and provide explicit formulas for the limit. For a special class of examples, the explicit parametrization of the frozen boundary is given. It turns out to be an algebraic curve with very special properties. Moreover, we establish the convergence of the fluctuations to the Gaussian Free Field in appropriate coordinates. Our main tool is a recently developed moment method for discrete particle systems.
Discrete and continuous non-intersecting random processes have given rise to critical "infinite dimensional diffusions", like the Airy process, the Pearcey process and variations thereof. It has been known that domino tilings of very large Aztec diamonds lead macroscopically to a disordered region within an inscribed ellipse (arctic circle in the homogeneous case), and a regular brick-like region outside the ellipse. The fluctuations near the ellipse, appropriately magnified and away from the boundary of the Aztec diamond, form an Airy process, run with time tangential to the boundary. This pa…
In this paper we consider domino tilings of the Aztec diamond with doubly periodic weightings. In particular a family of models which, for any $ k \in \mathbb{N} $, includes models with $ k $ smooth regions is analyzed as the size of the Aztec diamond tends to infinity. We use a non-intersecting paths formulation and give a double integral formula for the correlation kernel of the Aztec diamond of finite size. By a classical steepest descent analysis of the correlation kernel we obtain the local behavior in the smooth and rough regions as the size of the Aztec diamond tends to infinity. From t…
Random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond shape exhibit interesting features and some of the statistical properties seen in random matrix theory. As a statistical mechanical model it can be thought of as a dimer model or as a certain random surface. We consider the Aztec diamond with a two-periodic weighting which exhibits all three possible phases that occur in these types of models, often referred to as solid, liquid and gas. To analyze this model, we use entries of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix which give the probability of any configuration of dominoes. A formula for these entries, for thi…
Random tilings of the two-periodic Aztec diamond contain three macroscopic regions: frozen, where the tilings are deterministic; rough, where the correlations between dominoes decay polynomially; smooth, where the correlations between dominoes decay exponentially. In a previous paper, the authors found that a certain averaging of height function differences at the rough-smooth interface converged to the extended Airy kernel point process. In this paper, we augment the local geometrical picture at this interface by introducing well-defined lattice paths which are closely related to the level li…
Here we study the two-periodic weighted dimer model on the Aztec diamond graph. In the thermodynamic limit when the size of the graph goes to infinity while weights are fixed, the model develops a limit shape with frozen regions near corners, a flat ``diamond'' in the center with a noncritical (ordered) phase, and a disordered phase separating this diamond and the frozen phase. We show that in the mesoscopic scaling limit, when weights scale in the thermodynamic limit such that the size of the ``flat diamond'' is of the same order as the correlation length inside the diamond, fluctuations of t…
We analyze domino tilings of the two-periodic Aztec diamond by means of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials that we obtain from a reformulation of the Aztec diamond as a non-intersecting path model with periodic transition matrices. In a more general framework we express the correlation kernel for the underlying determinantal point process as a double contour integral that contains the reproducing kernel of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials. We use the Riemann-Hilbert problem to simplify this formula for the case of the two-periodic Aztec diamond. In the large size limit we recover the thr…
We study a biased $2\times 2$ periodic random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond and associate a linear flow on an elliptic curve to this model. Our main result is a double integral formula for the correlation kernel, in which the integrand is expressed in terms of this flow. For special choices of parameters the flow is periodic, and this allows us to perform a saddle point analysis for the correlation kernel. In these cases we compute the local correlations in the smooth disordered (or gaseous) region. The special example in which the flow has period six is worked out in more detail, and we…
Motivated by the problem of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, a weighted particle system is defined on $N$ lines, with line $j$ containing $j$ particles. The particles are restricted to lattice points from 0 to $N$, and particles on successive lines are subject to an interlacing constraint. It is shown that marginal distributions for this particle system can be computed exactly. This in turn is used to give unified derivations of a number of fundamental properties of the tiling problem, for example the evaluation of the number of distinct configurations and the relation to the GUE minor pro…
We use the octahedron recurrence, which generalizes the quadratic recurrence found by Kuo for standard Aztec diamonds, in order to compute boundary one-refined and two-refined partition functions for two-periodic Aztec diamonds. In a first approach, the geometric tangent method allows to derive the parametric form of the arctic curve, separating the solid and liquid phases. This is done by using the recently reformulation of the tangent method and the one-refined partition functions without extension of the domain. In a second part, we use the two-refined tangent method to rederive the arctic …
We prove that the, appropriately rescaled, boundary of the north polar region in the Aztec diamond converges to the Airy process. The proof uses certain determinantal point processes given by the extended Krawtchouk kernel. We also prove a version of Propp's conjecture concerning the structure of the tiling at the center of the Aztec diamond.
We show there is a last path at the rough smooth boundary of the two-periodic Aztec diamond with parameter $a\in (0,1)$ that, suitably rescaled, converges to the Airy process, under the condition that $a$ tends to zero as the size of the Aztec diamond tends to infinity at a certain rate. This condition causes the rough region to have a thin, mesoscopic width. We also show that the dimers are described by a discrete Bessel kernel when the width is only of microscopic size.

We consider the domino tilings of an Aztec diamond with a cut-off corner of macroscopic square shape and given size, and address the bulk properties of tilings as the size is varied. We observe that the free energy exhibits a third-order phase transition when the cut-off square, increasing in size, reaches the arctic ellipse---the phase separation curve of the original (unmodified) Aztec diamond. We obtain this result by studying the thermodynamic limit of certain nonlocal correlation function of the underlying six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions, the so-called emptiness form…
We give a geometrically intrinsic construction of a global time function for relatively compact diamond-shaped regions in arbitrary spacetimes. In the case of Minkowski spacetime, the flow of diffeomorphisms associated to a suitably normalized gradient of this time function becomes the conformal isotropy subgroup of the diamond. In full generality, this time function is elegantly expressed in terms of the Lorentzian distance function, and it has an asymptotic behavior at large absolute times similar to the one in Minkowski spacetime.
