We propose a simplified version of local molecular field (LMF) theory to treat Coulomb interactions in simulations of ionic fluids. LMF theory relies on splitting the Coulomb potential into a short-ranged part that combines with other short-ranged core interactions and is simulated explicitly. The averaged effects of the remaining long-ranged part are taken into account through a self-consistently determined effective external field. The theory contains an adjustable length parameter sigma that specifies the cut-off distance for the short-ranged interaction. This can be chosen to minimize the errors resulting from the mean-field treatment of the complementary long-ranged part. Here we suggest that in many cases an accurate approximation to the effective field can be obtained directly from the equilibrium charge density given by the Debye theory of screening, thus eliminating the need for a self-consistent treatment. In the limit sigma -> 0, this assumption reduces to the classical Debye approximation. We examine the numerical performance of this approximation for a simple model of a symmetric ionic mixture. Our results for thermodynamic and structural properties of uniform ionic mixtures agree well with similar results of Ewald simulations of the full ionic system. In addition we have used the simplified theory in a grand-canonical simulation of a nonuniform ionic mixture where an ion has been fixed at the origin. Simulations using short-ranged truncations of the Coulomb interactions alone do not satisfy the exact condition of complete screening of the fixed ion, but this condition is recovered when the effective field is taken into account. We argue that this simplified approach can also be used in the simulations of more complex nonuniform systems.
Recent advances in nanofluidics have allowed exploration of ion transport down to molecular scale confinement, yet artificial porins are still far from reaching the advanced functionalities of biological ion machinery. Achieving single ion transport that is tuneable by an external gate -- the ionic analogue of electronic Coulomb blockade (CB) -- would open new avenues in this quest. However, an understanding of ionic CB beyond the electronic analogy is still lacking. Here we show that the many-body dynamics of ions in a charged nanochannel result in a quantised and strongly nonlinear ionic tra…
Overscreening in the charge distribution of ionic liquids at electrified interfaces is shown to proceed from purely electrostatic and steric interactions in an exactly soluble one dimensional lattice Coulomb gas model. Being not a mean-field effect, our results suggest that even in higher dimensional systems the overscreening could be accounted for by a more accurate treatment of the basic lattice Coulomb gas model, that goes beyond the mean field level of approximation, without any additional interactions.
Using the collective variables theory, we study the effect of competition between Coulomb and dispersion forces on the gas-liquid phase behaviour of a model ionic fluid, i.e. a charge-asymmetric primitive model with additional short-range attractive interactions. Both the critical parameters and the coexistence envelope are calculated in a one-loop approximation as a function of the parameter $α$ measuring the relative strength of the Coulomb to short-range interactions. We found the very narrow region of $α$ bounded from the both sides by tricritical points which separates the models with "no…
We propose a field-theoretical approach based on the thermodynamic perturbation theory and within it derive a grand thermodynamic potential of the inhomogeneous ionic fluid as a functional of electrostatic potential for an arbitrary reference fluid system. We obtain a modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation as the Euler-Lagrange equation for the obtained functional. Applying Noether's theorem to this functional, we derive a general mean-field expression for the stress tensor consistent with the respective modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation. We derive a general expression for the macroscopic force…
Charge correlations in dense ionic fluids give rise to novel effects such as long-range screening and colloidal stabilization which are not predicted by the classic Debye-Huckel theory. We show that a Coulomb or charge-frustrated Ising model, which accounts for both long-range Coulomb and short-range molecular interactions, simply describes some of these ionic correlations. In particular, we obtain at mean field level and in simulations, a non-monotonic dependence of the screening length on the temperature. Using a combination of simulations and mean field theories, we study how the correlatio…
The decay of correlations in ionic fluids is a classical problem in soft matter physics that underpins applications ranging from controlling colloidal self-assembly to batteries and supercapacitors. The conventional wisdom, based on analyzing a solvent-free electrolyte model, suggests that all correlation functions between species decay with a common decay length in the asymptotic far field limit. Nonetheless, a solvent is present in many electrolyte systems. We show using an analytical theory and molecular dynamics simulations that multiple decay lengths can coexist in the asymptotic limit as…
Using the collective variables method we revisit the estimates of the Ginzburg temperature for the Coulomb-dominated models of ionic fluids. We consider the charge-asymmetric primitive model supplemented by short-range attractive interactions in the vicinity of the gas-liquid critical point. For this model, we derive the effective Ising-like $ϕ^{4}$-model Hamiltonian expressed in terms of the collective variables describing the fluctuation modes of the total number density. We obtain the explicit expressions for all the Hamiltonian coefficients within the framework of the same approximation, n…
We study the vapour-liquid phase behaviour of an ionic fluid confined in a random porous matrix formed by uncharged hard sphere particles. The ionic fluid is modelled as an equimolar binary mixture of oppositely charged equisized hard spheres, the so-called restricted primitive model (RPM). Considering the matrix-fluid system as a partly-quenched model, we develop a theoretical approach which combines the method of collective variables with the extension of the scaled-particle theory (SPT) for a hard-sphere fluid confined in a disordered hard-sphere matrix. The approach allows us to formulate …
The static dielectric properties of dense ionic fluids, e.g., room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and inorganic fused salts, are investigated on different length scales by means of grandcanonical Monte Carlo simulations. A generally applicable scheme is developed which allows one to approximately decompose the electric susceptibility of dense ionic fluids into the orientation and the distortion polarization contribution. It is shown that at long range the well-known plasma-like perfect screening behavior occurs, which corresponds to a diverging distortion susceptibility, whereas at short ra…
Inhomogeneity of ion correlation widely exists in many physicochemical, soft matter, and biological systems. Here, we apply the modified Gaussian renormalized fluctuation theory to study the classic example of the vapor-liquid interface of ionic fluids. The ion correlation is decomposed into a short-range contribution associated with the local electrostatic environment and a long-range contribution accounting for the spatially varying ionic strength and dielectric permittivity. For symmetric salt, both the coexistence curve and the interfacial tension predicted by our theory are in quantitativ…
Non-congruent gas-liquid phase transition (NCPT) have been studied in modified Coulomb model of a binary ionic mixture C(+6) + O(+8) on a \textit{uniformly compressible} ideal electronic background /BIM($\sim$)/. The features of NCPT in improved version of the BIM($\sim$) model for the same mixture on background of \textit{non-ideal} electronic Fermi-gas and comparison it with the previous calculations are the subject of present study. Analytical fits for Coulomb corrections to EoS of electronic and ionic subsystems were used in present calculations within the Gibbs--Guggenheim conditions of n…
The electrostatic interaction in ionic fluids is well-known to give rise to a characteristic phase behavior and structure. Sometimes its long range is proposed to single out the electrostatic potential over other interactions with shorter ranges. Here the importance of the range for the phase behavior and the structure of ionic fluids is investigated by means of grandcanonical Monte Carlo simulations of the lattice restricted primitive model (LRPM). The long-ranged electrostatic interaction is compared to various types of short-ranged potentials obtained by sharp and/or smooth cut-off schemes.…
We study fluid-fluid equilibrium in the simplest model of ionic solutions where the solvent is explicitly included, i.e., a binary mixture consisting of a restricted primitive model (RPM) and neutral hard-spheres (RPM-HS mixture). First, using the collective variable method we find free energy, pressure and partial chemical potentials in the random phase approximation (RPA) for a rather general model that takes into consideration solvent-solvent and solvent-ion interactions beyond the hard core. In the special case of a RPM-HS mixture, we consider two regularizations of the Coulomb potential i…
The effects of size and charge asymmetry on the gas-liquid critical parameters of a primitive model (PM) of ionic fluids are studied within the framework of the statistical field theory based on the collective variables method. Recently, this approach has enabled us to obtain the correct trends of the both critical parameters of the equisize charge-asymmetric PM without assuming ionic association. In this paper we focus on the general case of an asymmetric PM characterized by the two parameters: hard-sphere diameter-, $λ=σ_{+}/σ_{-}$ and charge, $z=q_{+}/|q_{-}|$, ratios of the two ionic speci…
We study the gas-liquid phase diagram and the crossover behavior of a simple model of ionic fluid: an equimolar binary mixture of equisized hard spheres interacting through screened Coulomb potentials which are repulsive between particles of the same species and attractive between particles of different species. Using our previous results, we obtain explicit expressions for the relevant coefficients of the effective $φ^{4}$ Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian in a one-loop approximation. Within the framework of this approximation, we calculate the critical parameters and gas-liquid coexistence curves …
We report an accurate Monte Carlo calculation of the phase diagram and clustering properties of the restricted primitive model with non-additive hard-sphere diameters. At high density the positively non-additive fluid shows more clustering than the additive model and the negatively non-additive fluid shows less clustering than the additive model, at low density the reverse scenario appears. A negative nonadditivity tends to favor the formation of neutrally charged clusters starting from the dipole. A positive nonadditivity favors the pairing of like ions at high density. The critical point of …
We study the vapour-liquid critical parameters of an ionic fluid confined in a disordered porous medium by using the theory which combines the collective variables approach with an extension of the scaled particle theory. The ionic fluid is described as a two-component charge- and size-asymmetric primitive model, and a porous medium is modelled as a disordered matrix formed by hard-spheres obstacles. In the particular case of the fixed valencies $2$:$1$, the coexistence curves and the corresponding critical parameters are calculated for different matrix porosities as well as for different diam…
The restricted primitive model with nonadditive hard-sphere diameters is shown to have interesting and peculiar clustering properties. We report accurate calculations of the cluster concentrations. Implementing efficient and ad hoc Monte Carlo algorithms we determine the effect of nonadditivity on both the clustering and the gas-liquid binodal. For negative nonadditivity, tending to the extreme case of completely overlapping unlike ions, the prevailing clusters are made of an even number of particles having zero total charge. For positive nonadditivity, the frustrated tendency to segregation o…
The Debye-H\" uckel formula for ionic activity coefficients is extended for concentrated solutions by solving a simple model of many-body Coulomb correlations and adding the Born solvation energy. Given the bulk permittivity, our formula is able to fit activity data for diverse electrolytes with only one parameter to adjust the correlation length, which interpolates between the Bjerrum length and the mean ion spacing. The results show that ionic activity in most electrolytes is dominated by three types of electrostatic forces: (i) mean-field charge screening, (ii) solvation, and (iii) Coulomb …
We develop a theory based on the method of collective variables to study the vapor-liquid equilibrium of asymmetric ionic fluids confined in a disordered porous matrix. The approach allows us to formulate the perturbation theory using an extension of the scaled particle theory for a description of a reference system presented as a two-component hard-sphere fluid confined in a hard-sphere matrix. Treating an ionic fluid as a size- and charge-asymmetric primitive model (PM) we derive an explicit expression for the relevant chemical potential of a confined ionic system which takes into account th…
We study the interaction between two neutral plane-parallel dielectric bodies in the presence of a highly asymmetric ionic fluid, containing multivalent as well as monovalent (salt) ions. Image charge interactions, due to dielectric discontinuities at the boundaries, as well as effects from ion confinement in the slit region between the surfaces are taken fully into account, leading to image-generated depletion attraction, ion correlation attraction and steric-like repulsive interactions. We investigate these effects by employing a combination of methods including explicit-ion and implicit-ion…
A field theoretic representation of the classical partition function is derived for a system composed of a mixture of anisotropic and isotropic mobile charges that interact {\sl via} long range Coulomb and short range nematic interactions. The field theory is then solved on a saddle-point approximation level, leading to a coupled system of Poisson-Boltzmann and Maier-Saupe equations. Explicit solutions are finally obtained for a rod-like counterion-only system in proximity of a charged planar wall, generalizing the standard Gouy-Chapman results. The nematic order parameter profile, the counter…
We present a derivation of generalized Poisson-Boltzmann equations starting {from} classical theories of binary fluid mixtures, employing an approach based on the Legendre transform as recently applied to the case of local descriptions of the fluid free energy. Under specific symmetry assumptions, and in the linearized regime, the Poisson-Boltzmann equation reduces to a phenomenological equation introduced by (Bazant et al., 2011), whereby the structuring near the surface is determined by bulk coefficients.
Using the adiabatic connection, we formulate the free energy in terms of the correlation function of a fictitious system, $h_λ({\bf r},{\bf r}')$, where $λ$ determines the interaction strength. To obtain $h_λ({\bf r},{\bf r}')$ we use the Ornstein-Zernike equation, and the two equations constitute a general liquid-state framework for treating inhomogeneous fluids. As the two equations do not form a closed set, an approximate closure relation is required and it determines a type of an approximation. In the present work we investigate the random phase approximation (RPA) closure. We determine th…
We have developed a field theory for strongly coupled Coulomb fluids, via introducing new functional--integral transformation of the electrostatic interaction energy. Our formalism not only reproduces the Lieb--Narnhofer lower bound, but also bridges logical gaps which previous approaches have involved.
The structure factor for electric field correlations in the two dimensional Coulomb fluid is simulated and compared to theories of the dielectric function. Singular changes in the structure factor occur at the BKT insulator to conductor transition, as well as at a higher temperature correlation transition between a poor electrolyte and perturbed Debye-Hückel fluid. Structure factors are found to differ in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles, with the poor electrolyte showing full ensemble inequivalence. We identify mechanisms of `underscreening' and `pinch point' scattering that are re…
In classical semi-infinite Coulomb fluids, two-point correlation functions exhibit a slow inverse-power law decay along a uniformly charged wall. In this work, we concentrate on the corresponding amplitude function which depends on the distances of the two points from the wall. Recently [L. Šamaj, J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 161}, 227 (2015)], applying a technique of anticommuting variables to a 2D system of charged rectilinear wall with "counter-ions only", we derived a relation between the amplitude function and the density profile which holds for any temperature. In this paper, using the Möbius con…
We present a personal view on the current state of statistical mechanics of Coulomb fluids with special emphasis on the interactions between macromolecular surfaces, concentrating on the weak and the strong coupling limits. Both are introduced for a (primitive) counterion-only system in the presence of macroscopic, uniformly charged boundaries, where they can be derived systematically. Later we show how this formalism can be generalized to the cases with additional characteristic length scales that introduce new coupling parameters into the problem. These cases most notably include asymmetric …
A theoretical description for the radial density profile of a finite number of identical charged particles confined in a harmonic trap is developed for application over a wide range of Coulomb coupling (or, equivalently, temperatures) and particle numbers. A simple mean field approximation neglecting correlations yields a density profile which is monotonically decreasing with radius for all temperatures, in contrast to molecular dynamics simulations and experiments showing shell structure at lower temperatures. A more complete theoretical description including charge correlations is developed …
Electric-field-induced oscillations in ionic fluids: a unified formulation of modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck models and its relevance to correlation function analysis
We study the steady state response of a dilute monovalent electrolyte solution to an external source with a constant relative velocity with respect to the fluid. The source is taken as a combination of three perturbations: an external force acting on the fluid, an externally imposed ionic chemical potential, and an external charge density. The linear response functions are obtained analytically and can be decoupled into three independent terms, corresponding to (i) fluid flow and pressure, (ii) total ionic number density and current, and (iii) charge density, electrostatic potential and electr…
