A precise definition of chaos for discrete processes based on iteration already exists. We shall first reformulate it in a more general frame, taking into account the fact that discrete chaotic behavior is neither necessarily based on iteration nor strictly related to compact metric spaces or to bounded functions. Then we shall apply the central idea of this definition to continuous processes. We shall try to see what chaos is, regardless of the way it is generated.
This paper establishes some criteria of chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems. Several criteria of strong Li-Yorke chaos are given. Based on these results, some criteria of distributional chaos in a sequence are established. Moreover, several criteria of distributional chaos induced by coupled-expansion for an irreducible transition matrix are obtained. Some of these results not only extend the existing related results for autonomous discrete systems to non-autonomous discrete systems, but also relax the assumptions of the counterparts. One example is provided for illustration.
This paper studies distributional chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems generated by given sequences of maps in metric spaces. In the case that the metric space is compact, it is shown that a system is Li-Yorkeδ-chaotic if and only if it is distributionallyδ'-chaotic in a sequence; and three criteria of distributional δ-chaos are established, which are caused by topologically weak mixing, asymptotic average shadowing property, and some expanding condition, respectively, where δ and δ' are positive constants. In a general case, a criterion of distributional chaos in a sequence induced by a X…
This paper is concerned with Devaney chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems. It is shown that in its definition, the two former conditions, i.e., transitivity and density of periodic points, in a set imply the last one, i.e., sensitivity, in the case that the set is unbounded, while a similar result holds under two additional conditions in the other case that the set is bounded. Furthermore, some chaotic behavior is studied for a class of non-autonomous systems, each of which is governed by a convergent sequence of continuous maps.
We construct a chaotic discrete-time continuous-state Hopfield network with piecewise-affine nonnegative activation functions and weight matrix with small positive entries. More precisely, there exists a Cantor set $C$ in the state space such that the network has sensitive dependence on initial conditions at initial states in $C$ and the network orbit of each initial state in $C$ has $C$ as its $ω$-limit set. The approach we use is based on tools developed and employed recently in the study of the topological dynamics of piecewise-contractions. The parameters of the chaotic network are explici…
We show that the existence of a dense set of periodic points for a topologically transitive non-minimal continuous group action on a Hausdorff uniform space with an infinite acting group does not necessarily imply a sensitive dependence to the initial conditions in such a system. This leads to define the chaos in the sense of Devaney for a continuous group action on a Hausdorff uniform spaces with an infinite acting group in the original way, i.e. a non-minimal topologically transitive and sensitive system with a dense set of periodic points is a chaotic system in the sense of Devaney.
We disprove the conjecture that distributional chaos of type 3 (briefly, DC3) is iteration invariant and show that a slightly strengthened definition, denoted by DC2$\frac{1}{2}$, is preserved under iteration, i.e. $f^n$ is DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ if and only if $f$ is too. Unlike DC3, DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ is also conjugacy invariant and implies Li-Yorke chaos. The definition of DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ is the following: a pair $(x,y)$ is DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ iff $Φ_{(x,y)}(0)<Φ^*_{(x,y)}(0)$, where $Φ_{(x,y)}(δ)$ (resp. $Φ^*_{(x,y)}(δ)$) is lower (resp. upper) density of times $k$ when $d(f^k(x),f^k(y))<δ$ and both…
In this paper we introduce the fractional-order variant of a Gompertz-like discrete system. The chaotic behavior is suppressed with an impulsive control algorithm. The numerical integration and the Lyapunov exponent are obtained by means of the discrete fractional calculus. To verify numerically the obtained results, beside the Lyapunov exponent, the tools offered by the 0-1 test are used.
To make research of chaos more friendly with discrete equations, we introduce the concept of an unpredictable sequence as a specific unpredictable function on the set of integers. It is convenient to be verified as a solution of a discrete equation. This is rigorously proved in this paper for quasilinear systems, and we demonstrate the result numerically for linear systems in the critical case with respect to the stability of the origin. The completed research contributes to the theory of chaos as well as to the theory of discrete equations, considering unpredictable solutions.
Bouncing droplets on a vibrating fluid bath can exhibit wave-particle behavior, such as being propelled by interacting with its own wave field. These droplets seem to walk across the bath, and thus are dubbed walkers. Experiments have shown that walkers can exhibit exotic dynamical behavior indicative of chaos. While the integro-differential models developed for these systems agree well with the experiments, they are difficult to analyze mathematically. In recent years, simpler discrete dynamical models have been derived and studied numerically. The numerical simulations of these models show e…
