We show that the existence of a dense set of periodic points for a topologically transitive non-minimal continuous group action on a Hausdorff uniform space with an infinite acting group does not necessarily imply a sensitive dependence to the initial conditions in such a system. This leads to define the chaos in the sense of Devaney for a continuous group action on a Hausdorff uniform spaces with an infinite acting group in the original way, i.e. a non-minimal topologically transitive and sensitive system with a dense set of periodic points is a chaotic system in the sense of Devaney.
We explore connections among the regional proximal relation, the asymptotic relation and the distal relation for a topological dynamical system with the shadowing property, and show that if a Devaney chaotic system has the shadowing property then it is distributionally chaotic.
We discuss the relation between Devaney chaos in the base system and Devaney chaos in its induced hyperspace system. We show that the latter need not imply the former. We also argue that this implication is not true even in the strengthened condition. Additionally we give an equivalent condition for the periodically density in the hyperspace system.
We give an equivalent definition of Devaney chaotic semiflow in terms of eventual sensitivity, the notion recently introduced by C.~Good, R.~Leek, and J.~Mitchell. As a consequence, we prove a version of Auslander-Yorke dichotomy for the case of not necessarily compact phase spaces. Finally, we raise some questions about the relation between Devaney chaoticity and the notion of topological sensitivity, which was recently introduced by C.~Good and C.~Macías.
We study topological entropy of exactly Devaney chaotic maps on totally regular continua, i.e. on (topologically) rectifiable curves. After introducing the so-called P-Lipschitz maps (where P is a finite invariant set) we give an upper bound for their topological entropy. We prove that if a non-degenerate totally regular continuum X contains a free arc which does not disconnect X or if X contains arbitrarily large generalized stars then X admits an exactly Devaney chaotic map with arbitrarily small entropy. A possible application for further study of the best lower bounds of topological entrop…
This paper is concerned with Devaney chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems. It is shown that in its definition, the two former conditions, i.e., transitivity and density of periodic points, in a set imply the last one, i.e., sensitivity, in the case that the set is unbounded, while a similar result holds under two additional conditions in the other case that the set is bounded. Furthermore, some chaotic behavior is studied for a class of non-autonomous systems, each of which is governed by a convergent sequence of continuous maps.
The collection of all non-degenerate, continuous, two-piece, piecewise-linear maps on $\mathbb{R}^2$ can be reduced to a four-parameter family known as the two-dimensional border-collision normal form. We prove that throughout an open region of parameter space this family has an attractor satisfying Devaney's definition of chaos. This strengthens existing results on the robustness of chaos in piecewise-linear maps. We further show that the stable manifold of a saddle fixed point, despite being a one-dimensional object, densely fills an open region containing the attractor. Finally we identify …
Let $T$ be a continuous self-map of a compact metric space $X$. The transformation $T$ induces natural a continuous self-map $T_K$ on the hyperspace $K(X)$ of all non-empty closed subsets of $X$. In this paper, we show that the system $(K(X),T_K)$ on the hyperspace is Devaney chaotic if and only if $(K(X),T_K)$ is an HY-system if and only if $(X,T)$ is an HY-system, where a system $(Y,S)$ is called an HY-system if it is totally transitive and has dense small periodic sets.
In this article, we show that a chaotic behavior can be found on a cube with arbitrary finite dimension. That is, the cube is a quasi-minimal set with Poincare chaos. Moreover, the dynamics is shown to be Devaney and Li-Yorke chaotic. It can be characterized as a domain-structured chaos for an associated map. Previously, this was known only for unit section and for Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos.
For each irrational $α\in[0,1)$ we construct a continuous function $f\: [0,1)\to \R$ such that the corresponding cylindrical transformation $[0,1)\times\R \ni (x,t) \mapsto (x+α, t+ f(x)) \in [0,1)\times\R$ is transitive and the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points whose orbits are discrete is 2. Such cylindrical transformations are shown to display a certain chaotic behaviour of Devaney-like type.
In this paper we introduce some weak dynamical properties by using subbases for the phase space. Among them, the notion of light chaos is the most significant. Severalexamples, which clarify the relationships between this kind of chaos and some classical notions, are given. Particular attention is also devoted to the connections between the dynamical properties of a system and the dynamical properties of the associated functional envelope. We show, among other things, that a continuous map f : X ! X, where X is a metric space, is chaotic (in the sense of Devaney) if and only if the associated …
Devaney and Krych showed that for $0<λ<1/e$ the Julia set of $λe^z$ consists of pairwise disjoint curves, called hairs, which connect finite points, called the endpoints of the hairs, with $\infty$. McMullen showed that the Julia set has Hausdorff dimension $2$ and Karpińska showed that the set of hairs without endpoints has Hausdorff dimension $1$. We study for which gauge functions the Hausdorff measure of the set of hairs without endpoints is finite.
Many research works deal with chaotic neural networks for various fields of application. Unfortunately, up to now these networks are usually claimed to be chaotic without any mathematical proof. The purpose of this paper is to establish, based on a rigorous theoretical framework, an equivalence between chaotic iterations according to Devaney and a particular class of neural networks. On the one hand we show how to build such a network, on the other hand we provide a method to check if a neural network is a chaotic one. Finally, the ability of classical feedforward multilayer perceptrons to lea…
Morphogenesis, as it is understood in a wide sense by René Thom, is considered for various types of chaos. That is, those, obtained by period-doubling cascade, Devaney's and Li-Yorke chaos. Moreover, in discussion form we consider inheritance of intermittency, the double-scroll Chua's attractor and quasiperiodical motions as a possible skeleton of a chaotic attractor. To make our introduction of the paper more clear, we have to say that one may consider other various accompanying concepts of chaos such that a structure of the chaotic attractor, its fractal dimension, form of the bifurcation di…
We discuss Devaney chaos on compact metric spaces using a decomposition space characterized by topological nature of symbolic dynamics. A chaotic map obtained here is defined as a topologically conjugate of the chaotic map on a decomposition space which is induced by a chaotic map of symbolic dynamics. In particular, the chaotic character of the tent map and the baker map on [0,1] are reconsidered based on decomposition dynamics involving symbolic dynamics with different two chaotic maps. As an example of compact metric space we exhibit a chaotic map existing on any given finite graph.
The Devaney, Li-Yorke and distributional chaos in plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ can occur in the continuous dynamical system generated by Euler equation branching. Euler equation branching is a type of differential inclusion $\dot x \in \{f(x),g(x) \} $, where $f,g:X \subset \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ are continuous and $f(x) \neq g(x)$ in every point $x \in X$. Stockman and Raines (Stockman, D. R.; Raines, B. R.: Chaotic sets and Euler equation branching, Journal of Mathematical Economics, 2010, Volume 46, pp. 1173-1193) defined so-called chaotic set in plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ which existence…
Motivated by C*-algebra theory, ultragraph edge shift spaces generalize shifts of finite type to the infinite alphabet case. In this paper we study several notions of chaos for ultragraph shift spaces. More specifically, we show that Li-Yorke, Devaney and distributional chaos are equivalent conditions for ultragraph shift spaces, and characterize this condition in terms of a combinatorial property of the underlying ultragraph. Furthermore, we prove that such properties imply the existence of a compact, perfect set which is distributionally scrambled of type 1 in the ultragraph shift space (a r…
For 0 < c < 1/e the Julia set of f(z) = c exp(z) is an uncountable union of pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to infinity [Devaney and Krych 1984], the Hausdorff dimension of this set is two [McMullen 1987], but the set of curves without endpoints has Hausdorff dimension one [Karpinska 1999]. We show that these results have three-dimensional analogues when the exponential function is replaced by a quasiregular self-map of three-space introduced by Zorich.
There is one-to-one correspondence between quadratic operators (mapping $\mathbb R^m$ to itself) and cubic matrices. It is known that any quadratic operator corresponding to a stochastic (in a fixed sense) cubic matrix preserves the standard simplex. In this paper we find conditions on the (non-stochastic) cubic matrix ensuring that corresponding quadratic operator preserves simplex. Moreover, we construct several quadratic non-stochastic operators which generate chaotic dynamical systems on the simplex. These chaotic behaviors are \emph{splitted} meaning that the simplex is partitioned into u…
We construct a multiply Xiong chaotic set with full Hausdorff dimension everywhere that is contained in some multiply proximal cell for the full shift over finite symbols and the Gauss system respectively.
We show sensitive dependece on initial condition and dense periodic points imply asymptotic sensitivity, a stronger form of sensitivity, where the deviation happens not just once but infintely many times. As a consequence it follows that all Devaney chaotic systems (e.g. logistic map) have this property.
We extend specification and periodic specification to finitely generated group actions on uniform spaces using a concept of specification point. We prove that certain group actions having two distinct specification points have positive entropy. We further prove that if a group containing an infinite order element acts on an infinite Hausdorff uniform space and the action possesses periodic specification, then it is Devaney chaotic.
Let $σ_{K}: \sum_{K}\rightarrow \sum_{K}$ be a shift map. For an interval $[p,q]\subset[0,1]$, let $D_{σ_{K}}([p,q])$ denote the set of pairs for which the density spectrum of the $ε$-approach time set equals $[p,q]$ when $ε$ is small and $E_{σ_{K}}([p,q])$ the set of pairs for which the density spectrum of the $ε$-approach time set converges to $[p,q]$ when $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. Then $\dim_{H} D_{σ_{K}}([p,q])=\dim_{H} E_{σ_{K}}([p,q])=2-q$. Moreover, $\mathscr{H}^{2-q}(E_{σ_{K}}([p,q]))=1$ when $q=0$ and $\mathscr{H}^{2-q}(E_{σ_{K}}([p,q]))=+\infty$ when $q>0$. Meanwhile, $\mathscr{H}^{2-q}(D_…
We prove that there exists a scrambled set for the Gauss map with full Hausdorff dimension. Meanwhile, we also investigate the topological properties of the sets of points with dense or non-dense orbits.
Periodicity plays a significant role in the chaos theory from the beginning since the skeleton of chaos can consist of infinitely many unstable periodic motions. This is true for chaos in the sense of Devaney [1], Li-Yorke [2] and the one obtained through period-doubling cascade [3]. Countable number of periodic orbits exist in any neighborhood of a structurally stable Poincaré homoclinic orbit, which can be considered as a criterion for the presence of complex dynamics [4]-[6]. It was certified by Shilnikov [7] and Seifert [8] that it is possible to replace periodic solutions by Poisson stabl…
In this paper we analyse the non-wandering set of 1D-Greenberg-Hastings cellular automata models for excitable media with $e\geqslant 1$ excited and $r\geqslant 1$ refractory states and determine its (strictly positive) topological entropy. We show that it results from a Devaney-chaotic closed invariant subset of the non-wandering set that consists of colliding and annihilating travelling waves, which is conjugate to a skew-product dynamical system of coupled shift-dynamics. Moreover, we determine the remaining part of the non-wandering set explicitly as a Markov system with strictly less topo…
We give a definition of chaos for a continuous self-map of a general topological space. This definition coincides with the Devanney definition for chaos when the topological space happens to be a metric space. We show that in a uniform Hausdorff space, there is a meaningful definition of sensitive dependence on initial conditions, and prove that if a map is chaotic on a such a space, then it necessarily has sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The proof is interesting in that it explains very clearly what causes a chaotic process to have sensitive dependence. Finally, we construct a cha…
In this paper, we introduce a new entropy-like invariant, named Hausdorff metric entropy, for finitely generated semigroups acting on compact metric spaces from a set-valued view and study its properties. We establish the relation between Hausdorff metric entropy and topological entropy of a semigroup defined by Biś. Some examples with positive or zero Hausdorff metric entropy are given. Moreover, some notions of chaos are also well generalized for finitely generated semigroups from a set-valued view.
Let $\mathcal{C}(S^{m})$ denote the set of continuous maps from the unit sphere $S^{m}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$ into itself endowed with the supremum norm. We prove that the set $\{f^n: f\in \mathcal{C}(S^{m})~\text{and}~n\ge 2\}$ of iterated maps is not dense in $\mathcal{C}(S^{m})$. This, in particular, proves that the periodic points of the iteration operator of order $n$ are not dense in $\mathcal{C}(S^m)$ for all $n\ge 2$, providing an alternative proof of the result that these operators are not Devaney chaotic on $\mathcal{C}(S^m)$ proved in [M. Veerapazham, C. Gopalakrishna, W. Zhang, Dyn…
As a model to provide a hands-on, elementary understanding of chaotic dynamics in dimension three, we introduce a $C^2$-open set of diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb R^3$ having two horseshoes with different dimensions of instability. We prove that: the unstable set of one horseshoe and the stable set of the other are of Hausdorff dimension nearly $2$ whose cross sections are Cantor sets; the intersection of the unstable and stable sets contains a fractal set of Hausdorff dimension nearly $1$. As a corollary we detect $C^2$-robust heterodimensional cycles. Our proof employs the theory of normally hy…
We define a family B(t) of compact subsets of the unit interval which generalizes the sets of numbers whose continued fraction expansion has bounded digits. We study how the set B(t) changes as one moves the parameter t, and see that the family undergoes period-doubling bifurcations and displays the same transition pattern from periodic to chaotic behavior as the usual family of quadratic polynomials. The set E of bifurcation parameters is a fractal set of measure zero and Hausdorff dimension 1. We also show that the Hausdorff dimension of B(t) varies continuously with the parameter, and the d…
