This text answers a question raised by Joux and the second author about the computation of discrete logarithms in the multiplicative group of finite fields. Given a finite residue field $\bK$, one looks for a smoothness basis for $\bK^*$ that is left invariant by automorphisms of $\bK$. For a broad class of finite fields, we manage to construct models that allow such a smoothness basis. This work aims at accelerating discrete logarithm computations in such fields. We treat the cases of codimension one (the linear sieve) and codimension two (the function field sieve).
We extend Kisin's results on the structure of characteristic $0$ Galois deformation rings to deformation rings of Galois representations valued in arbitrary connected reductive groups $G$. In particular, we show that such Galois deformation rings are complete intersection. In addition, we study explicitly the structure of the moduli space $X_{φ,N}$ of (framed) $(φ,N)$-modules when $G=\GL_n$. We show that when $G=\GL_3$ and $K_0=\Q_p$, $X_{φ,N}$ has a singular component, and we construct a moduli-theoretic resolution of singularities.
Let S/R be a finite extension of discrete valuation rings of characteristic p>0, and suppose that the corresponding extension L/K of fields of fractions is separable and is H-Galois for some K-Hopf algebra H. Let D_{S/R} be the different of S/R. We show that if S/R is totally ramified and its degree n is a power of p, then any element $ρ$ of L with $v_L(ρ)$ congruent to $-v_L(D_{S/R})-1$ mod n generates L as an H-module. This criterion is best possible. These results generalise to the Hopf-Galois situation recent work of G. Elder for Galois extensions.
Let $p$ be a prime. We produce two new families of pro-$p$ groups which are not realizable as absolute Galois groups of fields. To prove this we use the 1-smoothness property of absolute Galois pro-$p$ groups. Moreover, we show in these families one has one-relator pro-$p$ groups which may not be ruled out as absolute Galois groups employing the quadraticity of Galois cohomology (a consequence of Rost-Voevodsky Theorem), or the vanishing of Massey products in Galois cohomology.
We prove that any Galois extension of commutative rings with normal basis and abelian Galois group of odd order has a self dual normal basis. Also we show that if S/R is an unramified extension of number rings with Galois group of odd order and $R$ is totally real then the normal basis does not exist for S/R.
We review the analog of Fontaine's theory of crystalline $p$-adic Galois representations and their classification by weakly admissible filtered isocrystals in the arithmetic of function fields over a finite field. There crystalline Galois representations are replaced by the Tate modules of so-called local shtukas. We prove that the Tate module functor is fully faithful. In addition to this étale realization of a local shtuka we discuss also the de Rham and the crystalline cohomology realizations and construct comparison isomorphisms between these realizations. We explain how local shtukas and …
We define degree two cohomological invariants for G-Galois algebras over fields of characteristic not 2, and use them to give necessary conditions for the existence of a self--dual normal basis. In some cases, we show that these conditions are also sufficient.
Recently, much work has been done to investigate Galois module structure of local field extensions, particularly through the use of Galois scaffolds. Given a totally ramified $p$-extension of local fields $L/K$, a Galois Scaffold gives us a $K$-basis for $K[G]$ whose effect on the valuation of elements of $L$ is easy to determine. In 2013, N.P. Byott and G.G. Elder gave sufficient conditions for the existence of Galois scaffolds for cyclic extensions of degree $p^2$ in characteristic $p$. We take their work and adapt it to cyclic extensions of degree $p^2$ in characteristic $0$.
For a $p$-adic local field $K$ with perfect residue field, L. Herr constructed a complex which computes the Galois cohomology of a $p$-torsion representation of the absolute Galois group of $K$ by using the theory of $(Φ,Γ)$-modules. We shall generalize his work to the imperfect residue field (the residue field has a finite $p$-basis) case.
A Galois scaffold, in a Galois extension of local fields with perfect residue fields, is an adaptation of the normal basis to the valuation of the extension field, and thus can be applied to answer questions of Galois module structure. Here we give a sufficient condition for a Galois scaffold to exist in fully ramified Galois extensions of degree $p^2$ of characteristic $p$ local fields. This condition becomes necessary when we restrict to $p=3$. For extensions $L/K$ of degree $p^2$ that satisfy this condition, we determine the Galois module structure of the ring of integers by finding necessa…
We use new over-convergent p-adic exponential power series, inspired by work of Pulita, to build self-dual normal basis generators for the square root of the inverse different of certain abelian weakly ramified extensions of an unramified extension K of Qp. These extensions, whose set we denote by M, are the degree p subextensions over K of Mp,2, the maximal abelian totally, wildly and weakly ramified extension of K, whose norm group contains p. Our construction follows Pickett's, who dealt with the same set M of extensions of K, but does not depend on the choice of a basis of the residue fiel…
We define a variant of normal basis, called a {\em Galois scaffolding}, that allows for an easy determination of valuation, and has implications for Galois module structure. We identify fully ramified, elementary abelian extensions of local function fields of characteristic $p$, called {\em one-dimensional}, that, in a particular sense, are as simple as cyclic degree $p$ extensions, and prove the statement in the title above.
Let $F/E$ be a finite Galois extension of fields with abelian Galois group $Γ$. A self-dual normal basis for $F/E$ is a normal basis with the additional property that $Tr_{F/E}(g(x),h(x))=δ_{g,h}$ for $g,h\inΓ$. Bayer-Fluckiger and Lenstra have shown that when $char(E)\neq 2$, then $F$ admits a self-dual normal basis if and only if $[F:E]$ is odd. If $F/E$ is an extension of finite fields and $char(E)=2$, then $F$ admits a self-dual normal basis if and only if the exponent of $Γ$ is not divisible by $4$. In this paper we construct self-dual normal basis generators for finite extensions of fini…
We determine an explicit triangular integral basis for any separable cubic extension of a rational function field over a finite field in any characteristic. We obtain a formula for the discriminant of every such extension in terms of a standard form in a tower for the Galois closure.
In 1976, Onabe discovered that, in contrast to the Neukirch-Uchida results that were proved around the same time, a number field $K$ is not completely characterized by its absolute abelian Galois group $A_K$. The first examples of non-isomorphic $K$ having isomorphic $A_K$ were obtained on the basis of a classification by Kubota of idele class character groups in terms of their infinite families of Ulm invariants, and did not yield a description of $A_K$. In this paper, we provide a direct `computation' of the profinite group $A_K$ for imaginary quadratic $K$, and use it to obtain many differe…
Explicit descriptions of local integral Galois module generators in certain extensions of $p$-adic fields due to Pickett have recently been used to make progress with open questions on integral Galois module structure in wildly ramified extensions of number fields. In parallel, Pulita has generalised the theory of Dwork's power series to a set of power series with coefficients in Lubin-Tate extensions of $\Q_p$ to establish a structure theorem for rank one solvable p-adic differential equations. In this paper we first generalise Pulita's power series using the theories of formal group exponent…
Let L be an abelian number field of degree n with Galois group G. In this paper we study how to compute efficiently a normal integral basis for L, if there is at least one, assuming that the group G and an integral basis for L are known.
We characterize finite Galois extensions $K$ of the field of rational numbers in terms of the rings ${\rm Int}_{\mathbb{Q}}(\mathcal O_K)$, recently introduced by Loper and Werner, consisting of those polynomials which have coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ and such that $f(\mathcal O_K)$ is contained in $\mathcal O_K$. We also address the problem of constructing a basis for ${\rm Int}_{\mathbb{Q}}(\mathcal O_K)$ as a $\mathbb{Z}$-module.
Given a finite residue field $k$, one looks for a smoothness basis that is invariant under the automorphism group of $k$. We construct models for some finite fields that admit such a basis. This work aims at accelerating algorithms for computing discrete logarithms in some finite residue fields.
A number field $K$ is Hilbert-Speiser if all of its tame abelian extensions $L/K$ admit NIB (normal integral basis). It is known that $\mathbb{Q}$ is the only such field, but when we restrict $\text{Gal}(L/K)$ to be a given group $G$, the classification of $G$-Hilbert-Speiser fields is far from complete. In this paper, we present new results on so-called $G$-Leopoldt fields. In their definition, NIB is replaced by ``weak NIB'' (defined below). Most of our results are negative, in the sense that they strongly limit the class of $G$-Leopoldt fields for some particular groups $G$, sometimes even …
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of $p$-adic fields with group $G$. It is well-known that $\mathcal{O}_L$ contains a free $\mathcal{O}_K[G]$-submodule of finite index. We study the minimal index of such a free submodule, and determine it exactly in several cases, including for any cyclic extension of degree $p$ of $p$-adic fields.
In this paper we study deformations of mod $p$ Galois representations $τ$ (over an imaginary quadratic field $F$) of dimension $2$ whose semi-simplification is the direct sum of two characters $τ_1$ and $τ_2$. As opposed to our previous work we do not impose any restrictions on the dimension of the crystalline Selmer group $H^1_Σ(F, {\rm Hom}(τ_2, τ_1)) \subset {\rm Ext}^1(τ_2, τ_1)$. We establish that there exists a basis $\mathcal{B}$ of $H^1_Σ(F, {\rm Hom}(τ_2, τ_1))$ arising from automorphic representations over $F$ (Theorem 8.1). Assuming among other things that the elements of $\mathcal{…
Let $p$ be a prime. A pro-$p$ group $G$ is said to be 1-smooth if it can be endowed with a homomorphism of pro-$p$ groups $G\to1+p\mathbb{Z}_p$ satisfying a formal version of Hilbert 90. By Kummer theory, maximal pro-$p$ Galois groups of fields containing a root of 1 of order $p$, together with the cyclotomic character, are 1-smooth. We prove that a finitely generated $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group is 1-smooth if, and only if, it occurs as the maximal pro-$p$ Galois group of a field containing a root of 1 of order $p$. This gives a positive answer to De Clerq-Florence's "Smoothness Conjecture…
We exhibit an explicit short basis of the Stickelberger ideal of cyclotomic fields of any conductor $m$, i.e., a basis containing only short elements. By definition, an element of $\mathbb{Z}[G_m]$, where $G_m$ denotes the Galois group of the field, is called short whenever it writes as $\sum_{σ\in G_m} \varepsilon_σσ$ with all $\varepsilon_σ\in\{0,1\}$. One ingredient for building such a basis consists in picking wisely generators $α_m(b)$ in a large family of short elements. As a direct practical consequence, we deduce from this short basis an explicit upper bound on the relative class numbe…
This paper presents two algorithms on certain computations about Pisot numbers. Firstly, we develop an algorithm that finds a Pisot number $α$ such that $\Q[α] = \F$ given a real Galois extension $\F$ of $\Q$ by its integral basis. This algorithm is based on the lattice reduction, and it runs in time polynomial in the size of the integral basis. Next, we show that for a fixed Pisot number $α$, one can compute $ [α^n] \pmod{m}$ in time polynomial in $(\log (m n))^{O(1)}$, where $m$ and $n$ are positive integers.
We provide a Boseck-type basis of the space of holomorphic differentials for a large class of solvable covers of the projective line with perfect field of constants of characteristic $p > 0$. Within this class, we also describe the Galois module structure of holomorphic differentials for abelian covers.
Let E be a number field and G be a finite group. Let A be any O_E-order of full rank in the group algebra E[G] and X be a (left) A-lattice. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for X to be free of given rank d over A. In the case that the Wedderburn decomposition of E[G] is explicitly computable and each component is in fact a matrix ring over a field, this leads to an algorithm that either gives an A-basis for X or determines that no such basis exists. Let L/K be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G such that E is a subfield of K and put d=[K:E]. The algorith…
We provide a concrete example of a normal basis for a finite Galois extension which is not abelian. More precisely, let $\mathbb{C}(X(N))$ be the field of meromorphic functions on the modular curve $X(N)$ of level $N$. We construct a completely free element in the extension $\mathbb{C}(X(N))/\mathbb{C}(X(1))$ by means of Siegel functions.
In this paper, we generalise the construction of the Bloch-Kato exponential map to complete discrete valuation fields of mixed characteristic (0,p) whose residue fields have a finite p-basis. As an application we prove an explicit reciprocity law, extending a result of Cherbonnier and Colmez in the classical case. This result relies on the calculation of the Galois cohomology of a p-adic representation V in terms of its (phi,G)-module.
Let $K$ be a complete local field of characteristic $p$ with perfect residue field. Let $L/K$ be a finite, fully ramified, Galois $p$-extension. If $π_L\in L$ is a prime element, and $p'(x)$ is the derivative of $π_L$'s minimal polynomial over $K$, then the relative different $\euD_{L/K}$ is generated by $p'(π_L)\in L$. Let $v_L$ be the normalized valuation normalized with $v_L(L)=\mathbb{Z}$. We show that any element $ρ\in L$ with $v_L(ρ)\equiv -v_L(p'(π_L))-1\bmod[L:K]$ generates a normal basis, $K[{Gal}(L/K)]\cdotρ=L$. This criterion is tight: Given any integer $i$ such that $i\not\equiv -v…
