We prove uniqueness of ground states $Q$ in $H^{1/2}$ for pseudo-relativistic Hartree equations in three dimensions, provided that $Q$ has sufficiently small $L^2$-mass. This result shows that a uniqueness conjecture by Lieb and Yau in [CMP 112 (1987),147--174] holds true at least under a smallness condition.
Our proof combines variational arguments with a nonrelativistic limit, which leads to a certain Hartree-type equation (also known as the Choquard-Pekard or Schroedinger-Newton equation). Uniqueness of ground states for this limiting Hartree equation is well-known. Here, as a key ingredient, we prove the so-called nondegeneracy of its linearization. This nondegeneracy result is also of independent interest, for it proves a key spectral assumption in a series of papers on effective solitary wave motion and classical limits for nonrelativistic Hartree equations.
In the present article we study the radial symmetry of minimizers of the energy functional, corresponding to the repulsive Hartree equation in external Coulomb potential. To overcome the difficulties, resulting from the "bad" sign of the nonlocal term, we modify the reflection method and then, by using Pohozaev integral identities we get the symmetry result.
The aim of this work is to show existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation with fractional time derivative of order $α\in (0,1)$ and with a Hartree-type nonlinear term.
We consider $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity $$i \pr_t u = -\DD u - \big (Φ\ast |u|^2 \big) u \quad {in $\RR^4$},$$ where $Φ(x)$ is a perturbation of the convolution kernel $|x|^{-2}$. Despite the lack of pseudo conformal invariance for this equation, we prove the existence of critical mass finite-time blowup solutions $u(t,x)$ that exhibit the pseudo-conformal blowup rate $$ \| \nabla u(t) \|_{L^2_x} \sim \frac{1}{|t|} \quad {as} \quad t \nearrow 0 . $$ Furthermore, we prove the finite-codimensional stability of this conformal blow up, by…
We prove blow-up in finite time for radially symmetric solutions to the pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock equation with negative energy. The non-linear Hartree-Fock equation is commonly used in the physics literature to describe the dynamics of white dwarfs. We extend thereby recent results by Fröhlich and Lenzmann, who established in \cite{FL1,FL2} blow-up for solutions to the pseudo-relativistic Hartree equation. As key ingredient for handling the exchange term we use the conservation of the expectation of the square of the angular momentum operator.
In this paper we are interested in the following critical Hartree equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu =\displaystyle{\Big(\int_Ω\frac{u^{2_μ^\ast} (ξ)}{|x-ξ|^μ}dξ\Big)u^{2_μ^\ast-1}}+\varepsilon u ,~~~\text{in}~Ω,\\ u=0,~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\text{on}~\partialΩ, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $N\geq4$, $0<μ\leq4$, $\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter, $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and $2_μ^\ast=\frac{2N-μ}{N-2}$ is the critical exponent in the sense of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. By establishing various versions of local Pohozaev ident…
Gross-Pitaevskii and Hartree hierarchies are infinite systems of coupled PDEs emerging naturally from the mean field theory of Bose gases. Their solutions are known to be related to an initial value problem, respectively the Gross-Pitaevskii and Hartree equations. Due to their physical and mathematical relevance, the issues of well-posedness and uniqueness for these hierarchies have recently been studied thoroughly using specific nonlinear and combinatorial techniques. In this article, we introduce a new approach for the study of such hierarchy equations by firstly establishing a duality betwe…
We prove several existence and non existence results of solitary waves for a class of nonlinear pseudo-relativistic Hartree equations with general nonlinearities. We use variational methods and some new variational identities involving the half Laplacian.
We consider a class of evolution equations in Lindblad form, which model the dynamics of dissipative quantum mechanical systems with mean-field interaction. Particularly, this class includes the so-called Quantum Fokker-Planck-Poisson model. The existence and uniqueness of global-in-time, mass preserving solutions is proved, thus establishing the existence of a nonlinear conservative quantum dynamical semigroup. The mathematical difficulties stem from combining an unbounded Lindblad generator with the Hartree nonlinearity.
In this paper we study the semiclassical limit for the pseudo-relativistic Hartree equation $\sqrt{-\varepsilon^2 Δ+ m^2}u + V u = (I_α* |u|^{p}) |u|^{p-2}u$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ where $m>0$, $2 \leq p < \frac{2N}{N-1}$, $V \colon \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{R}$ is an external scalar potential, $I_α(x) = \frac{c_{N,α}}{|x|^{N-α}}$ is a convolution kernel, $c_{N,α}$ is a positive constant and $(N-1)p-N<α<N$. For $N=3$, $α=p=2$, our equation becomes the pseudo-relativistic Hartree equation with Coulomb kernel.
We study the existence of ground state solutions for a class of non-linear pseudo-relativistic Schrödinger equations with critical two-body interactions. Such equations are characterized by a nonlocal pseudo-differential operator closely related to the square-root of the Laplacian. We investigate such a problem using variational methods after transforming the problem to an elliptic equation with a nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions.
In this paper, we study solutions to the three-dimensional quintic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy. We prove unconditional uniqueness among all small solutions in the critical space $\mathfrak{H}^1$ (which corresponds to $H^1$ on the NLS level). With slight modifications to the proof, we also prove unconditional uniqueness of solutions to the Hartree hierarchy without smallness condition. Our proof uses the quantum de Finetti theorem, and is an extension of the work by Chen-Hainzl-Pavlović-Seiringer \cite{CHPS}, and our previous work \cite{UniqueLowReg}.
The inverse scattering theory for many-body systems in quantum mechanics is an important and difficult issue not only in physics---atomic physics, molecular physics and nuclear physics---but also mathematics. The major purpose in this paper is to establish a reconstruction procedure of two-body interactions from scattering solutions for a Hartree-Fock equation. More precisely, this paper gives a uniqueness theorem and proposes a new reconstruction procedure of the short-range and two-body interactions from a high-velocity limit of the scattering operator for the Hartree-Fock equation. Moreover…
We prove existence of positive ground state solutions to the pseudo-relativistic Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{l} \sqrt{-Δ+m^2} u +Vu = \left( W * |u|^θ \right)|u|^{θ-2} u \quad\text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$}\\ u \in H^{1/2}(\mathbb{R}^N) \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $N \geq 3$, $m >0$, $V$ is a bounded external scalar potential and $W$ is a convolution potential, radially symmetric, satisfying suitable assumptions. We also furnish some asymptotic decay estimates of the found solutions.
With appropriate hypotheses on the nonlinearity $f$, we prove the existence of a ground state solution $u$ for the problem \[(-Δ+m^2)^σu+Vu=\left(W*F(u)\right)f(u)\ \ \text{in }\ \mathbb{R}^{N},\] where $0<σ<1$, $V$ is a bounded continuous potential and $F$ the primitive of $f$. We also show results about the regularity of any solution of this problem.
With appropriate hypotheses on the nonlinearity $f$, we prove the existence of a ground state solution $u$ for the problem \[\sqrt{-Δ+m^2}\, u+Vu=\left(W*F(u)\right)f(u)\ \ \text{in }\ \mathbb{R}^{N},\] where $V$ is a bounded potential, not necessarily continuous, and $F$ the primitive of $f$. We also show that any of this problem is a classical solution. Furthermore, we prove that the ground state solution has exponential decay.
In a recent paper published in Nonlinear Analysis: Theory, Methods & Applications, C. Argaez and M. Melgaard studied excited states for pseudo-relativistic multi-configuration methods. Their paper follows a previous work of mine in the non-relativistic case (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., 171, 2004). The main results of the paper of C. Argaez and M. Melgaard are correct, but the proofs are both wrong and incomplete.
We study finite-time blow-up for pseudo-relativistic Hartree- and Hartree-Fock equations, which are model equations for the dynamical evolution of white dwarfs. In particular, we prove that radially symmetric initial configurations with negative energy lead to finite-time blow-up of solutions. Furthermore, we derive a mass concentration estimate for radial blow-up solutions. Both results are mathematically rigorous and are in accordance with Chandrasekhar's physical theory of white dwarfs, stating that stellar configurations beyond a certain limiting mass lead to ``gravitational collapse'' of …
We are concerned with the following constrained minimization problem: $$e(a_{1},a_{2},β) := \inf\left\{E_{a_{1},a_{2},β}(u_{1},u_{2}): \|u_{1}\|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{3})} = \|u_{2}\|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{3})} = 1\right\},$$ where $E_{a_{1},a_{2},β}$ is the energy functional associated to two coupled pseudo-relativistic Hartree equations involving three parameters $a_{1}, a_{2}, β$ and two trapping potentials $V_1(x)$ and $V_2(x)$. In this paper, we obtain the existence of minimizers of $e(a_{1},a_{2},β)$ for possible $a_{1}, a_{2}$ and $β$ under suitable conditions on the potentials, which general…
In this paper, we investigate the constrained minimization problem \begin{equation}\label{eq:0.1} e(a):=\inf_{\{u\in \mathcal{H},\|u\|_2^2=1\}}E_a(u), \end{equation} where the energy functional \begin{equation} \label{eq:0.2} E_a(u)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}(u\sqrt{-Δ+m^2}\,u+Vu^2)\,dx -\frac{a}{2}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}(|x|^{-1}*u^2)u^2\,dx \end{equation} with $m\in \mathbb{R}$, $a>0$, is defined on a Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}$. We show that there exists a threshold $a^*>0$ so that $e(a)$ is achieved if $0<a<a^*$, and has no minimizers if $a\geq a^*$. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of non…
We consider a class of pseudo-relativistic Hartree equations in presence of general nonlinearities not satisfying the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. Using variational methods based on critical point theory, we show the existence of two non trivial signed solutions, one positive and one negative.
This article is concerned with the mathematical analysis of a class of a nonlinear fractional Schrodinger equations with a general Hartree-type integrand. We prove existence and uniqueness of global-in-time solutions to the associated Cauchy problem. Under suitable assumptions, we also prove the existence of standing waves using the method of concentration-compactness by studying the associated constrained minimization problem. Finally we show the orbital stability of standing waves which are the minimizers of the associate variational problem.
We study the Cauchy problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_tu = (m^2-Δ)^\frac\alpha2 u + F(u) in \mathbb{R}^{1+n}, $$ where $ n \ge 1$, $m \ge 0$, $1 < α< 2$, and $F$ stands for the nonlinearity of Hartree type: $$F(u) = λ(\frac{ψ(\cdot)}{|\cdot|^γ} * |u|^2)u$$ with $λ= \pm1, 0 <γ< n$, and $0 \le ψ\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^n)$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of local and global solutions for certain $α$, $γ$, $λ$, $ψ$. We also remark on finite time blowup of solutions when $λ= -1$.
We study the Cauchy problems for the Hartree-type nonlinear Dirac equations with Yukawa-type potential derived from pseudoscalar field. We establish scattering for large data but with a relatively small part of initial data associated with charge conjugation by exploiting null structure induced by chirality.
In this paper we motivate, formulate and analyze the Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) equations for molecular systems under Coulomb interaction. They consist in approximating the N-particle Schrodinger wavefunction by a (time-dependent) linear combination of (time-dependent) Slater determinants. The equations of motion express as a system of ordinary differential equations for the expansion coefficients coupled to nonlinear Schrodinger-type equations for mono-electronic wavefunctions. The invertibility of the one-body density matrix (full-rank hypothesis) plays a crucia…
We establish uniqueness and radial symmetry of ground states for higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger and Hartree equations whose higher-order differentials have small coefficients. As an application, we obtain error estimates for higher-order approximations to the pseudo-relativistic ground state. Our proof adapts the strategy of Lenzmann using local uniqueness near the limit of ground states in a variational problem. However, in order to bypass difficulties from lack of symmetrization tools for higher-order differential operators, we employ the contraction mapping argument in our earlier work …
We study the coupled Hartree system $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu+ V_1(x)u =α_1\big(|x|^{-4}\ast u^{2}\big)u+β\big(|x|^{-4}\ast v^{2}\big)u &\mbox{in}\ \mathbb{R}^N,\\[1mm] -Δv+ V_2(x)v =α_2\big(|x|^{-4}\ast v^{2}\big)v +β\big(|x|^{-4}\ast u^{2}\big)v &\mbox{in}\ \mathbb{R}^N, \end{array}\right. $$ where $N\geq 5$, $β>\max\{α_1,α_2\}\geq\min\{α_1,α_2\}>0$, and $V_1,\,V_2\in L^{N/2}(\mathbb{R}^N)\cap L_{\text{loc}}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ are nonnegative potentials. This system is critical in the sense of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. For the system with $V_1=V_2=0$ we employ movin…
In this paper, we are concerned with the nonrelativistic limit of the following pseudo-relativistic equation with Hartree nonlinearity or power type nonlinearity \[ \left(\sqrt{-\hbar^2c^2 Δ+m^2c^4} - mc^2 \right) u + μu = \mathcal{N}(u), \] where $c$ denotes the speed of light. We prove that the ground states of this equation converges to the ground state of its nonrelativistic counterpart \[ -\frac{\hbar^2}{2m}Δu + μu = \mathcal{N}(u) \] with an explicit convergence rate $1/c^2$ in arbitrary order as $c \to \infty$. Moreover, we show that this rate is optimal.
The purpose of this paper is to establish the solvability results to direct and inverse problems for time-fractional pseudo-parabolic equations with the self-adjoint operators. We are especially interested in proving existence and uniqueness of the solutions in the abstract setting of Hilbert spaces.
We study the global behavior of solutions to the focusing generalized Hartree equation with $H^1$ data at mass-energy threshold in the inter-range case. In the earlier works of Arora-Roudenko [Arora-Roudenko 2021], the behavior of solutions below the mass-energy threshold was classified. In this paper, we first exhibit three special solutions: $e^{it} Q$, $Q^\pm$, where $Q^\pm$ exponentially approach to the $e^{it} Q$ in the positive time direction, $Q^+$ blows up and $Q^-$ scatters in the negative time direction. Then we classify solutions at this threshold, showing that they behave exactly a…
An existence and uniqueness result to evolution equations with sign-changing pseudo-differential operators and its applications to logarithmic Laplacian operators and second-order differential operators without ellipticity
We are concerned with the focusing $L^2$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $d=1,2$. The uniqueness is proved for a large energy class of multi-bubble blow-up solutions, which converge to a sum of $K$ pseudo-conformal blow-up solutions particularly with low rate $(T-t)^{0+}$, as $t\to T$, $1\leq K<\infty$. Moreover, we also prove the uniqueness in the energy class of multi-solitons which converge to a sum of $K$ solitary waves with convergence rate $(1/t)^{2+}$, as $t\to \infty$. The uniqueness class is further enlarged to contain the multi-solitons with even lower …
An existence and uniqueness theory to stochastic partial differential equations involving pseudo-differential operators driven by space-time white noise
In the 2-d setting, given an $H^1$ solution $v(t)$ to the linear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t v +Δv =0$, we prove the existence (but not uniqueness) of an $H^1$ solution $u(t)$ to the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation $i\partial_t u + Δu -|u|^{p-1}u=0$ for nonlinear powers $2<p<3$ and the existence of an $H^1$ solution $u(t)$ to the defocusing Hartree equation $i\partial_t u + Δu -(|x|^{-γ}\star|u|^{2})u=0$ for interaction powers $1<γ<2$, such that $\|u(t)-v(t)\|_{H^1} \to 0$ as $t\to +\infty$. This is a partial result toward the existence of well-defined continuous wave ope…
The purpose of this paper is to establish the theory of stochastic pseudo-differential operators and give its applications in stochastic partial differential equations. First, we introduce some concepts on stochastic pseudo-differential operators and prove their fundamental properties. Also, we present the boundedness theory, invertibility of stochastic elliptic operators and the Garding inequality. Moreover, as an application of the theory of stochastic pseudo-differential operators, we give a Calderon-type uniqueness theorem on the Cauchy problem of stochastic partial differential equations.…
This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem for a mixed pseudo-parabolic $p$-Laplacian type equation. By constructing a family of potential wells, we first present the explicit expression for the depth of potential well, and then prove the existence, uniqueness and decay estimate of global solutions and the blowup phenomena of solutions with subcritical initial energy. Next, we extend parallelly these results to the critical initial energy. Lastly, the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of global solutions with supercritical initial energy are proved by further analyzing …
In this paper, we consider the dynamics of the solution to the mass critical focusing Hartree equation with inverse-square potential in the energy space $H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. The main difficulties are the equation is \emph{not} space-translation invariant and the nonlinearity is non-local. We first prove that if the mass of the initial data is less than that of ground states, then the solution will be global. Although we don't know whether the ground state is unique, we can verify all the ground states have the same, minimal mass threshold. Then at the minimal mass threshold, we can construct…
In this Note, we present a Calderón-type uniqueness theorem on the Cauchy problem of stochastic partial differential equations. To this aim, we introduce the concept of stochastic pseudo-differential operators, and establish their boundedness and other fundamental properties. The proof of our uniqueness theorem is based on a new Carleman-type estimate.
In this paper we consider quasilinear elliptic equations with double phase phenomena and a reaction term depending on the gradient. Under quite general assumptions on the convection term we prove the existence of a weak solution by applying the theory of pseudomonotone operators. Imposing some linear conditions on the gradient variable the uniqueness of the solution is obtained.

We consider the generalized Choquard equation describing trapped electron gas in 3 dimensional case. The study of orbital stability of the energy minimizers (known as ground states) depends essentially in the local uniqueness of these minimizers. In equivalent way one can optimize the Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequality subject to the constraint fixing the $L^2$ norm. The uniqueness of the minimizers for the case $p=2$, i.e. for the case of Hartree--Choquard is well known. The main difficulty for the case $p > 2$ is connected with possible lack of control on the $L^p$ norm of the minimizers.
In this paper we investigate direct and inverse problems for time-fractional pseudo-parabolic equations associated with the Jacobi operator. The existence and uniqueness of the solutions are proved. Also, the stability result of the inverse source problem (ISP) is established.
We study the global behavior of solutions to the nonlinear generalized Hartree equation, where the nonlinearity is of the non-local type and is expressed as a convolution, $$ i u_t + Δu + (|x|^{-(N-γ)} \ast |u|^p)|u|^{p-2}u=0, \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, t\in \mathbb{R}. $$ Our main goal is to understand behavior of $H^1$ (finite energy) solutions of this equation in various settings. In this work we make an initial attempt towards this goal. We first investigate the $H^1$ local wellposedness and small data theory. We then, in the intercritical regime ($0<s<1$), classify the behavior of $H^1$ so…
For the one-dimensional mass-critical/supercritical pseudo-relativistic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, a stationary solution can be constructed as an energy minimizer under an additional kinetic energy constraint and the set of energy minimizers is orbitally stable in \cite{BGV}. In this study, we proved the local uniqueness and established the orbital stability of the solitary wave by improving that of the energy minimizer set. A key aspect thereof is the reformulation of the variational problem in the non-relativistic regime, which we consider to be more natural because the proof extensivel…
This paper study the well--posedness of the entropy formulation given by Plotnikov in [{Differential Equations}, 30 (1994), pp. 614--622] for forward-backward parabolic problem obtained as singular limit of a proper pseudoparabolic approximation. It was proved in [C. Mascia, A. Terracina, and A. Tesei, {Arch.\ Ration.\ Mech.\ Anal.}, 194 (2009), pp. 887--925] that such formulation gives uniqueness when the solution takes values in the stable phases. Here we consider the situation in which unstable phase is taken in account, proving that, in general, uniqueness does not hold.
In this article we deal with the backward uniqueness property of the heat equation in conical domains in two spatial dimensions via Carleman inequality techniques. Using a microlocal interpretation of the pseudoconvexity condition, we improve the bounds of Šverák and Li on the minimal angle in which the backward uniqueness property is displayed: We reach angles of slightly less than $95^{\circ}$. Via two-dimensional limiting Carleman weights we obtain the uniqueness of possible controls of the heat equation with lower order perturbations in conical domains with opening angles larger than $90^{…
The three-dimensional inviscid Hasegawa-Mima model is one of the fundamental models that describe plasma turbulence. The model also appears as a simplified reduced Rayleigh-Bénard convection model. The mathematical analysis the Hasegawa-Mima equation is challenging due to the absence of any smoothing viscous terms, as well as to the presence of an analogue of the vortex stretching terms. In this paper, we introduce and study a model which is inspired by the inviscid Hasegawa-Mima model, which we call a pseudo-Hasegawa-Mima model. The introduced model is easier to investigate analytically than …
