We study the time dependent Hartree equation in the continuum, the semidiscrete, and the fully discrete setting. We prove existence-uniqueness, regularity, and approximation properties for the respective schemes, and set the stage for a controlled numerical computation of delicate nonlinear and nonlocal features of the Hartree dynamics in various physical applications.
We prove the phase segregation phenomenon to occur in the ground state solutions of an interacting system of two self-coupled repulsive Hartree equations for large nonlinear and nonlocal interactions. A self-consistent numerical investigation visualizes the approach to this segregated regime.
In this paper, we are concerned with static Schrödinger-Hartree and Schrödinger-Maxwell equations with combined nonlinearities. We derive the explicit forms for positive solution $u$ in the critical case and non-existence of nontrivial nonnegative solutions in the subcritical cases (see Theorem \ref{Thm0} and \ref{Thm1}). The arguments used in our proof is a variant (for nonlocal nonlinearity) of the direct moving spheres method for fractional Laplacians in \cite{CLZ}. The main ingredients are the variants (for nonlocal nonlinearity) of the maximum principles, i.e., \emph{Narrow region princip…
In the present article we study the radial symmetry of minimizers of the energy functional, corresponding to the repulsive Hartree equation in external Coulomb potential. To overcome the difficulties, resulting from the "bad" sign of the nonlocal term, we modify the reflection method and then, by using Pohozaev integral identities we get the symmetry result.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to semi-classical Schroedinger equations with nonlinearities of Hartree type. For a weakly nonlinear scaling, we show the validity of an asymptotic superposition principle for slowly modulated highly oscillatory pulses. The result is based on a high-frequency averaging effect due to the nonlocal nature of the Hartree potential, which inhibits the creation of new resonant waves. In the proof we make use of the framework of Wiener algebras.
We study the existence of ground state solutions for a class of non-linear pseudo-relativistic Schrödinger equations with critical two-body interactions. Such equations are characterized by a nonlocal pseudo-differential operator closely related to the square-root of the Laplacian. We investigate such a problem using variational methods after transforming the problem to an elliptic equation with a nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions.
Numerical approximation of the Boltzmann equation is a challenging problem due to its high-dimensional, nonlocal, and nonlinear collision integral. Over the past decade, the Fourier-Galerkin spectral method has become a popular deterministic method for solving the Boltzmann equation, manifested by its high accuracy and potential of being further accelerated by the fast Fourier transform. Albeit its practical success, the stability of the method is only recently proved by Filbet, F. & Mouhot, C. in [$ Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.$ 363, no. 4 (2011): 1947-1980.] by utilizing the "spreading" property …

We consider the long time asymptotics of (not necessarily small) odd solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with semi-linear and nonlocal Hartree nonlinearities, in one dimension of space. We assume data in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ only, and we prove decay to zero in compact regions of space as time tends to infinity. We give three different results where decay holds: semilinear NLS, NLS with a suitable potential, and defocusing Hartree. The proof is based on the use of suitable virial identities, in the spirit of nonlinear Klein-Gordon models as in Kowalczyk-Martel-Muñoz, a…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the Schrödinger equation in the presence of a nonlinearity of Hartree type in the semi-classical regime. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution without altering the rapid oscillations. We show the validity of the WKB-analysis when the potential in the nonlinearity is singular around the origin. No new resonant wave is created in our model, this phenomenon is inhibited due to the nonlinearity. The nonlocal nature of this latter leads us to build our result on a high-frequ…
We study the Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a nonlocal interaction potential of Hartree type in three space dimensions. If the potential is even and positive definite or a positive function and its Fourier transform decays sufficiently rapidly the problem is shown to be globally well-posed for large rough data which not necessarily have finite energy and also in a situation where the energy functional is not positive definite. The proof uses a suitable modification of the I-method.
We study the propagation of wave packets for nonlinear nonlocal Schrodinger equations in the semi-classical limit. When the kernel is smooth, we construct approximate solutions for the wave functions in subcritical, critical and supercritical cases (in terms of the size of the initial data). The validity of the approximation is proved up to Ehrenfest time. For homogeneous kernels, we establish similar results in subcritical and critical cases. Nonlinear superposition principle for two nonlinear wave packets is also considered.
We consider nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a Hartree-type nonlocal nonlinearity. The case where a nonlinear interaction potential grows at the spatial infinity is studied. By virtue of an effective decomposition of the nonlinearity based on conservation of mass, this kind of growing nonlinear interaction is known to contain an effect like a linear potential. In this paper, a well-posedness result is obtained in a suitable energy space for a class of interaction potential growing at the spatial infinity in at most the quadratic order. If the growth rate of interaction potential is faster t…
The overreaching goal of this paper is to investigate the existence and uniqueness of weak solution of a semilinear parabolic equation with double nonlocality in space and in time variables that naturally arises while modeling a biological nano-sensor in the chaotic dynamics of a polymer chain. In fact, the problem under consideration involves a symmetric integrodifferential operator of Lévy type and a term called the interaction potential, that depends on the time-integral of the solution over the entire interval of solving the problem. Owing to the Galerkin approximation, the existence and u…
We consider the semiclassical limit of the Hartree equation with a data causing a focusing at a point. We study the asymptotic behavior of phase function associated with the WKB approximation near the caustic when a nonlinearity is supercritical. In this case, it is known that a phase shift occurs in a neighborhood of focusing time in the case of focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Thanks to the smoothness of the nonlocal nonlinearities, we justify the WKB-type approximation of the solution for a data which is larger than in the previous results and is not necessarily well-prepared.…
We consider a nonlocal evolution equation representing the continuum limit of a large ensemble of interacting particles on graphs forced by noise. The two principle ingredients of the continuum model are a nonlocal term and Q-Wiener process describing the interactions among the particles in the network and stochastic forcing respectively. The network connectivity is given by a square integrable function called a graphon. We prove that the initial value problem for the continuum model is well-posed. Further, we construct a semidiscrete (discrete in space and continuous in time) and a fully disc…
This paper considers the initial-boundary value problem for the nonlocal Cahn--Hilliard equation $$ \partial_tφ+ (-Δ+1)(a(\cdot)φ-J\astφ+ G'(φ)) = 0 \quad \mbox{in}\ Ω\times(0, T) $$ in an unbounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth bounded boundary, where $N\in\mathbb{N}$, $T>0$, and $a(\cdot), J, G$ are given functions. In the case that $Ω$ is a bounded domain and $-Δ+1$ is replaced with $-Δ$, this problem has been studied by using a Faedo--Galerkin approximation scheme considering the compactness of the Neumann operator $-Δ+1$ (cf. Colli--Frigeri--Grasselli (2012), Gal--Grasselli (…
We study stable blow-up dynamics in the generalized Hartree equation with radial symmetry, a Schrödinger-type equation with a nonlocal, convolution-type nonlinearity: $iu_t+Δu +\left(|x|^{-(d-2)} \ast |u|^{p} \right) |u|^{p-2}u = 0, x \in \mathbb{R}^d$. First, we consider the $L^2$-critical case in dimensions d=3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and obtain that a generic blow-up has a self-similar structure and exhibits not only the square root blowup rate but also the log-log correction (via asymptotic analysis and functional fitting). In this setting we also study blow-up profiles and show that generic blow-up s…
In \cite{LiMZ:e-critical Har, MiaoXZ:09:e-critical radial Har}, the dynamics of the solutions for the focusing energy-critical Hartree equation have been classified when $E(u_0)<E(W)$, where $W$ is the ground state. In this paper, we continue the study on the dynamics of the radial solutions with the threshold energy. Our arguments closely follow those in \cite{DuyMerle:NLS:ThresholdSolution, DuyMerle:NLW:ThresholdSolution, DuyRouden:NLS:ThresholdSolution, LiZh:NLS, LiZh:NLW}. The new ingredient is that we show that the positive solution of the nonlocal elliptic equation in $L^{\frac{2d}{d-2}}…
We study the generalized Hartree equation, which is a nonlinear Schrödinger-type equation with a nonlocal potential $iu_t + Δu + (|x|^{-b} \ast |u|^p)|u|^{p-2}u=0, x \in \mathbb{R}^N$.We establish the local well-posedness at the non-conserved critical regularity $\dot{H}^{s_c}$ for $s_c \geq 0$, which also includes the energy-supercritical regime $s_c>1$ (thus, complementing the work in [3], where the authors obtained the $H^1$ well-posedness in the intercritical regime together with classification of solutions under the mass-energy threshold). We next extend the local theory to global: for sm…
We investigate the NLS equation with competing Hartree-type and power-type nonlinearities \begin{equation*} \begin{array}{ll} i\partial _{t}ψ+Δψ+γ(I_{α}\ast |ψ|^{p})|ψ|^{p-2}ψ+μ|ψ|^{q-2}ψ=0, & \text{ }\forall (t,x)\in \mathbb{R\times R}^{N},% \end{array}% \end{equation*}% where $γμ<0$. We establish conditions for the local well-posedness in the energy space. Under the double $L^{2}$-supercritical case, we prove the existence and multiplicity of standing waves with prescribed mass by developing a constraint method when $γ<0,μ>0$ and $γ>0,μ<0, $ respectively. Moreover, we prove weak orbital stab…
The approximation of fixed points by numerical fixed points was presented in the elegant monograph of Krasnosel'skii et al. (1972). The theory, both in its formulation and implementation, requires a differential operator calculus, so that its actual application has been selective. The writer and Kerkhoven demonstrated this for the semiconductor drift-diffusion model in 1991. In this article, we show that the theory can be applied to time dependent quantum systems on bounded domains, via evolution operators. In addition to the kinetic operator term, the Hamiltonian includes both an external tim…
We study the inverse scattering problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the Yukawa potential. The nonlinearity of the equation is nonlocal. We reconstruct the potential and the nonlinearity by the knowledge of the scattering states. Our result is applicable to reconstructing the nonlinearity of the semi-relativistic Hartree equation.
We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i u_t + Δu + |u|^{p-1}u=0$, $p>1,$ and the generalized Hartree equation $iv_t + Δv + (|x|^{-(N-γ)}\ast |v|^p)|v|^{p-2}u=0$, $p\geq2$, $γ<N$, in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical setting. With the initial data $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ the characterization of solutions behavior under the mass-energy threshold is known for the NLS case from the works of Holmer and Roudenko in the radial [16] and Duyckaerts, Holmer and Roudenko in the nonradial setting [10] and further generalizations (see [1,11,14]); for the generalized Hartre…
We study the global behavior of solutions to the nonlinear generalized Hartree equation, where the nonlinearity is of the non-local type and is expressed as a convolution, $$ i u_t + Δu + (|x|^{-(N-γ)} \ast |u|^p)|u|^{p-2}u=0, \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, t\in \mathbb{R}. $$ Our main goal is to understand behavior of $H^1$ (finite energy) solutions of this equation in various settings. In this work we make an initial attempt towards this goal. We first investigate the $H^1$ local wellposedness and small data theory. We then, in the intercritical regime ($0<s<1$), classify the behavior of $H^1$ so…
In this paper, without any assumption on $v$ and under extremely mild assumption $u(x)=O(|x|^{K})$ at $\infty$ for some $K\gg1$ arbitrarily large, we prove classification of solutions to the following conformally invariant system with mixed order and exponentially increasing nonlinearity in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$: \begin{equation*}\\\begin{cases} (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}u(x)=e^{pv(x)}, \qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^{2}, \\ -Δv(x)=u^{4}(x), \qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^{2}, \end{cases}\end{equation*} where $p\in(0,+\infty)$, $u\geq 0$ and satisfies the finite total curvature condition $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{2}}u^{4}(x)\mathr…
