In this article, we clarify the link between the conformal (i.e. Weyl) correspondence from the Minkowski space to the de Sitter space and the conformal (i.e. SO(2,$d$)) invariance of the conformal scalar field on both spaces. We exhibit the realization on de Sitter space of the massless scalar representation of SO$(2,d)$. It is obtained from the corresponding representation in Minkowski space through an intertwining operator inherited from the Weyl relation between the two spaces. The de Sitter representation is written in a form which allows one to take the point of view of a Minkowskian observer who sees the effect of curvature through additional terms.
Friedrich's proofs for the global existence results of de Sitter-like space-times and of semi-global existence of Minkowski-like space-times [Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{107}, 587 (1986)] are re-examined and discussed, making use of the extended conformal field equations and a gauge based on conformal geodesics. In this gauge the location of the conformal boundary of the space-times is known \emph{a priori} once the initial data has been prescribed. Thus it provides an analysis which is conceptually and calculationally simpler.
Geodesic observers in cosmology are revisited. The coordinates based on freely falling observers introduced by Gautreau in de Sitter and Einstein-de Sitter spaces (and, previously, by Gautreau and Hoffmann in Schwarzschild space) are extended to general FLRW universes. We identify situations in which the relation between geodesic and comoving coordinates can be expressed explicitly in terms of elementary functions. In general, geodesic coordinates in cosmology turn out to be rather cumbersome and limited to the region below the apparent horizon.
In this paper we write down the equation for a scalar conformally coupled field simultaneously for de Sitter (dS), anti-de Sitter (AdS) and Minkowski spacetime in d-dimensions. The curvature dependence appears in a very simple way through a conformal factor. As a consequence the process of curvature free limit, including wave functions limit and two-points functions, turns to be a straightforward issue. We determine a set of modes, that we call de Sitter plane waves, which become ordinary plane waves when the curvature vanishes.
The scalar-spinor interaction Lagrangian is presented by the Yukawa potential. In dS ambient space formalism, the interaction Lagrangian of scalar-spinor fields was obtained from a new transformation which is very similar to the guage theory. The interaction of massless minimally coupled scalar and spinor fields was investigated. The Minkowski limit of the massless minimally coupled scalar field and massive spinor field interaction in the ambient space formalism of de Sitter space time is calculated. The interaction Lagrangian and massless minimally coupled scalar field in the null curvature l…
The classical Bondi-Penrose approach to the gravitational radiation theory in asymptotically flat spacetimes is recalled and recent advances in the proofs of the existence of such spacetimes are briefly reviewed. We then mention the unique role of the boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes, representing uniformly accelerated objects, as the only explicit radiative solutions known which are asymptotically flat; they are used as test beds in numerical relativity and approximation methods. The main part of the review is devoted to the examples of radiative fields in the vacuum spacetimes with positi…
In this letter we show that the ``preferred'' Klein-Gordon Quantum Field Theories (QFT's) on a d-dimensional de Sitter spacetime can be obtained from a Klein-Gordon QFT on a (d+1)-dimensional ``ambient'' Minkowski spacetime satisfying the spectral condition and, conversely, that a Klein-Gordon QFT on a (d+1)-dimensional ``ambient'' Minkowski spacetime satisfying the spectral condition can be obtained as superposition of d-dimensional de Sitter Klein-Gordon fields in the preferred vacuum. These results establish a correspondence between QFT's living on manifolds having different dimensions. The…
We demonstrate that the static ground state atom, which interacts with a conformally coupled massless scalar field in the de Sitter invariant vacuum, can obtain a position-dependent energy-level shift and this shift could cause a Casimir-Polder-like force on it. Interestingly no such force arises on the inertial atom bathed in a thermal radiation in the Minkowski universe. Thus, although the energy-level shifts of the static atom for these two cases are structurally the same, whether the energy-level shift causes the Casimir-Polder-like force, in principle, could be as an indicator to distingu…
We revisit the issue of uplifting the potential to de Sitter (dS) vacua in type IIB flux compactifications of Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT). We shed light on some tension between two constraints on dS vacua in type IIB string theory. One is the well-known and much-discussed constraint which leads to the no-go theorem that can in principle be evaded. The other follows from 4-dimensional Einstein's equations, which has, however, been much less discussed in connection with the former constraint. In addition to the challenges previously posed, it is suggested that the uplifting scenari…
In this paper, we generalize the defining equation for de Sitter space by replacing the de Sitter radius with a function $f$ satisfying certain conditions; each resulting hypersurface is diffeomorphic to de Sitter space, and has a geometry (and causal character) which is controlled by the choice of $f$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a hypersurface to be timelike, null, or spacelike in the generalized model; in the non-null case, the geometry is given by a warped product. Several examples of timelike, null, and spacelike hypersurfaces are presented. Lastly, we calculate t…
The two-point Wightman function of the free photon field defined in a gauge-invariant manner is known to be equivalent to the field-strength two-point function in any spacetime that is topologically trivial. We show that the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function defined in a similar manner is equivalent to the Weyl-tensor two-point function in Minkowski space and in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space. This implies that in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function decays like (distance)^(-4) as a function of coordinate distance for spacelike …
We comment on approaches to the Cosmological Constant Problem in 4+1 dimensions, with the Standard Model fields confined to a 3-brane. We show that requiring maximal 4D symmetry only on this 3-brane (and not on all other 3-branes that foliate the 4+1-dimensional space) leads to a wide class of de Sitter solutions on the brane, with the Hubble constant sourced by the brane tension and a bulk scalar potential. For Poincaré symmetry on the brane, fine-tuning is always necessary. The de Sitter solutions are generated at a special dynamical point. Small deviations from this point are shown to grow …
The seminar discovery by Gibbons and Hawking that a freely falling detector observes an isotropic background of thermal radiation reveals that de Sitter space is equivalent to a thermal bath at the Gibbons-Hawking temperature in Minkowski space, as far as the response rate of the detector is concerned. Meanwhile, for a static detector which is endowed with a proper acceleration with respect to the local freely-falling detectors, the temperature becomes the square root of the sum of the squared Gibbons-Hawking temperature and the squared Unruh temperature associated with the proper acceleration…
We show the uniqueness of superpotentials leading to Minkowski vacua of single-field no-scale supergravity models, and the construction of dS/AdS solutions using pairs of these single-field Minkowski superpotentials. We then extend the construction to two- and multifield no-scale supergravity models, providing also a geometrical interpretation. We also consider scenarios with additional twisted or untwisted moduli fields, and discuss how inflationary models can be constructed in this framework.
Motivated by the connection of string theory to cosmology or particle physics, we study solutions of type II supergravities having a four-dimensional de Sitter or Minkowski space-time, with intersecting Dp-branes and orientifold Op-planes. Only few such solutions are known, and we aim at a better characterisation. Modulo a few restrictions, we prove that there exists no classical de Sitter solution for any combination of D3/O3 and D7/O7, while we derive interesting constraints for intersecting D5/O5 or D6/O6, or combinations of D4/O4 and D8/O8. Concerning classical Minkowski solutions, we unde…
We construct Kaluza--Klein-type models with a de Sitter or Minkowski bundle in the de Sitter or Poincaré gauge theory of gravity, respectively. A manifestly gauge-invariant formalism has been given. The gravitational dynamics is constructed by the geometry of the de Sitter or Minkowski bundle and a global section which plays an important role in the gauge-invariant formalism. Unlike the old Kaluza--Klein-type models of gauge theory of gravity, a suitable cosmological term can be obtained in the Lagrangian of our models and the models in the spin-current-free and torsion-free limit will come ba…
We study gravitational radiation produced by time changing matter source in de Sitter spacetime. We consider a cosmological Killing horizon instead of the conformal boundary used in the radiation theory in the Minkowski spacetime. The energy of the radiation passing through the horizon is derived. Our result takes the form of a generalized quadruple formula expressed in terms of the mass and pressure quadruple moments and is written explicitly up to the first order in $\sqrtΛ$. The zeroth order term recovers the famous Einstein's quadruple formula obtained for the perturbed Minkowski spacetime…
We classify solutions of 10d type IIA/B supergravities with orientifolds, on a 4d maximally symmetric spacetime times a 6d group manifold. We then look for new solutions in previously unexplored solution classes, and find some: (anti-) de Sitter solutions with intersecting O4, O6 and D6, or Minkowski solutions with 3 intersecting O5, among others. We provide the numerical code that we developed for this purpose. We also prove new no-go theorems against (anti-) de Sitter solutions. We finally conjecture the absence of de Sitter solution for 2 or less intersecting source sets, implying that a 4d…
In this paper we revisit the analysis of the ringdown frequencies in the form of quasi-normal modes for Schwarzschild,Schwarzschild de-Sitter and Reissner-Nordström space-times. We plot these frequencies, using the third-order WKB semi-analytical method against the mass, charge and cosmological constant for each corresponding space-time for various different spin-fields. We verify the stability of each black hole solution, including the extremal Reissner-Nordström space-time. Finally, we discover four different traits for the Schwarzschild de-Sitter space-time: i) the frequencies vanish in the…
It is important to re-examine some of the interactions of gravitational waves with matter due to the recent discovery of the waves in LIGO. In a previous paper with Morales, interaction of gravitational waves was studied with scalar and neutrino fields in Minkowski space-time. In this paper, we find that electromagnetic waves have a similar interaction with gravitational wave in a flat background, and we comment on the implications of this for a gravitational wave detector. Primordial gravitational waves were generated in the early universe and thus it is important to study interaction of the …
We classified in arXiv:2201.04152 certain 10d supergravity solutions with a 4d de Sitter, Minkowski or anti-de Sitter spacetime. We then found new solutions in previously unexplored classes. In this paper we study their properties, compare them to swampland conjectures, and make new observations. Using new numerical tools, we first identify all Lie algebras underlying the 6d group manifolds, allowing us to discuss their compactness. We then investigate scale separation, and prove related no-go theorems. Last but not least, we automatize and analyze the stability of all solutions. This leads us…
We describe how conformal Minkowski, dS- and AdS-spaces can be united into a single submanifold [N] of RP^5. It is the set of generators of the null cone in M^{2,4}. Conformal transformations on the Mink-, dS- and AdS-spaces are induced by O(2,4) linear transformations on M^{2,4}. We also describe how Weyl transformations and conformal transformations can be resulted in on [N]. In such a picture we give a description of how the conformal Mink-, dS- and AdS-spaces as well as [N] are mapped from one to another by conformal maps. This implies that a CFT in one space can be translated into a CFT i…
Motivated by the desire to understand the causal structure of physical signals produced in curved spacetimes -- particularly around black holes -- we show how, for certain classes of geometries, one might obtain its retarded or advanced minimally coupled massless scalar Green's function by using the corresponding Green's functions in the higher dimensional Minkowski spacetime where it is embedded. Analogous statements hold for certain classes of curved Riemannian spaces, with positive definite metrics, which may be embedded in higher dimensional Euclidean spaces. The general formula is applied…
We discuss dynamics of massive Klein-Gordon fields in two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetimes ($AdS_2$), in particular conserved quantities and non-modal instability on the future Poincaré horizon called, respectively, the Aretakis constants and the Aretakis instability. We find out the geometrical meaning of the Aretakis constants and instability in a parallel-transported frame along a null geodesic, i.e., some components of the higher-order covariant derivatives of the field in the parallel-transported frame are constant or unbounded at the late time, respectively. Because $AdS_2$ is maxim…
The thermal time hypothesis proposed by Rovelli [1] regards the physical basis for the flow of time as thermodynamical and provides a definition of the temperature for some special cases. We verify this hypothesis in the case of de Sitter spacetime by relating the uniformly accelerated observer in de Sitter spacetime to the diamond in Minkowski spacetime. Then, as an application of it, we investigate the thermal effect for the uniformly accelerated observer with a finite lifetime in dS spacetime, which generalizes the corresponding result for the case of Minkowski spacetime [2]. Furthermore, n…
We recently constructed the $R$-Poincaré algebra from an appropriate deformed Poisson brackets which reproduce the Fock coordinate transformation. We showed then that the spacetime of this transformation is the de Sitter one. In this paper, we derive in the $R$-Minkowski spacetime the Dirac equation and show that this is none other than the Dirac equation in the de Sitter spacetime given by its conformally flat metric. Furthermore, we propose a new approach for solving Dirac's equation in the de Sitter spacetime using the Schrödinger picture.

This paper deals thoroughly with the scalar and electromagnetic fields of uniformly accelerated charges in de Sitter spacetime. It gives details and makes various extensions of our Physical Review Letter from 2002. The basic properties of the classical Born solutions representing two uniformly accelerated charges in flat spacetime are first summarized. The worldlines of uniformly accelerated particles in de Sitter universe are defined and described in a number of coordinate frames, some of them being of cosmological significance, the other are tied naturally to the particles. The scalar and el…
In this expository note, I present some basic geometric and twistor theoretic facts about de Sitter space leading up to a discussion of Penrose's quasi-local mass construction for linear gravity theory in the de Sitter background. The corresponding results for Minkowski space and anti--de Sitter space are familiar and can be found in \cite{PR} or \cite{HT} for the former and \cite{KT} for the latter. Some of the formulas given here are also quite familiar, but some are thought to be new and it is convenient to have these facts collected in one place.
For certain classes of space(time)s embeddable in a higher dimensional flat space(time), it appears possible to compute the minimally coupled massless scalar Green's function in the former by convolving its cousin in the latter with an appropriate scalar charge density. The physical interpretation is that beings residing in the higher dimensional flat space(time) may set up sources to fool the observer confined on the lower dimensional curved submanifold that she is detecting the field generated by a space(time) point source in her own world. In this paper we extend the general formula to incl…
The electron-photon interaction (the spinor-vector field interaction) in the de Sitter ambient space formalism is investigated in the first (leading order) approximation. The interaction Lagrangian and the scattering matrix are presented. In this approximation, the scattering matrix can be written as a expansion of the interaction Lagrangian. The tree-diagram of electron-photon scattering amplitude is calculated. Finally the Minkowski limit is considered.
We investigate particle detector responses in some topologically non-trivial spacetimes. We extend a recently proposed regularization of the massless scalar field Wightman function in 4-dimensional Minkowski space to arbitrary dimension, to the massive scalar field, to quotients of Minkowski space under discrete isometry groups and to the massless Dirac field. We investigate in detail the transition rate of inertial and uniformly accelerated detectors on the quotient spaces under groups generated by $(t,x,y,z)\mapsto(t,x,y,z+2a)$, $(t,x,y,z)\mapsto(t,-x,y,z)$, $(t,x,y,z)\mapsto(t,-x,-y,z)$, $(…
We construct simple standing wave solutions in a 5D space-time with a ghost scalar field. The nodes of these standing waves are 'islands' of 4D Minkowski space-time. For the 5D model with increasing (decreasing) warp factor there are a finite (infinite) number of nodes and thus Minkowski island-universes having different parameters, such as gravitational and cosmological constants. This feature is similar to the assumptions of the landscape models, which postulate a large number of universes with different parameters. This standing wave solution also provides a new localization mechanism - mat…
In this article, we quantize the Maxwell ("massless spin one") de Sitter field in a conformally invariant gauge. This quantization is invariant under the SO$_0(2,4)$ group and consequently under the de Sitter group. We obtain a new de Sitter invariant two-points function which is very simple. Our method relies on the one hand on a geometrical point of view which uses the realization of Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces as intersections of the null cone in $\setR^6$ and a moving plane, and on the other hand on a canonical quantization scheme of the Gupta-Bleuler type.
We present a theory of general two-point functions and of generalized free fields in d-dimensional de Sitter space-time which closely parallels the corresponding minkowskian theory. The usual spectral condition is now replaced by a certain geodesic spectral condition, equivalent to a precise thermal characterization of the corresponding ``vacuum''states. Our method is based on the geometry of the complex de Sitter space-time and on the introduction of a class of holomorphic functions on this manifold, called perikernels, which reproduce mutatis mutandis the structural properties of the two-poi…

Quantum fluctuations for a massless scalar field in the background metric of spherical impulsive gravitational waves through Minkowski and de Sitter spaces are investigated. It is shown that there exist finite fluctuations for de Sitter space.
We study some kinematical aspects of quantum fields on causal sets. In particular, we are interested in free scalar fields on a fixed background causal set. We present various results building up to the study of the entanglement entropy of de Sitter horizons using causal sets. We begin by obtaining causal set analogs of Green functions for this field. First we construct the retarded Green function in a Riemann normal neighborhood (RNN) of an arbitrary curved spacetime. Then, we show that in de Sitter and patches of anti-de Sitter spacetimes the construction can be done beyond the RNN. This all…
In recent papers [1,2], it has been shown that the presence of negative norm states or negative frequency solutions are indispensable for a fully covariant quantization of the minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space. Their presence, while leaving unchanged the physical content of the theory, offers the advantage of eliminating any ultraviolet divergence in the vacuum energy [2] and infrared divergence in the two point function [3]. We attempt here to extend this method to the interacting quantum field in Minkowski space-time. As an illustration of the procedure, we consider the $λϕ^4…
The problem of the flat limits of the scalar and spinor fields on the de Sitter expanding universe is considered in the rest frame vacuum where the frequencies are separated in rest frames as in special relativity. The phases of the fundamental solutions of these fields are regularized in order to obtain Minkowskian flat limits. New expressions of scalar mode functions or Dirac spinors reaching natural flat limits are given in the rest frame vacuum and suitable approximate formulas are proposed. In this manner the flat limit is correctly defined for the entire quantum theory since the one-part…
Conformally invariant wave equations in de Sitter space, for scalar and vector fields, are introduced in the present paper. Solutions of their wave equations and the related two-point functions, in the ambient space notation, have been calculated. The ``Hilbert'' space structure and the field operator, in terms of coordinate independent de Sitter plane waves, have been defined. The construction of the paper is based on the analyticity in the complexified pseudo-Riemanian manifold, presented first by Bros et al.. Minkowskian limits of these functions are analyzed. The relation between the ambie…
In this letter we study the problem of scalar particle production in external electric field in de Sitter geometry. The total probability is calculated using the previously obtained result in Ref.\cite{6} for transition amplitude in external electric field on de Sitter space. Then we make a graphical study of the total probability in terms of the ratio mass of the particle/expansion factor. Our results show that the probability depend of the direction in which the particles are emitted and that the probability becomes maxim when particles are emitted on the direction of the electric field. In …
We find explicitly the induced graviton propagator on de Sitter branes embedded in various five-dimensional spacetimes; de Sitter branes in AdS and Minkowski space are particular cases. By studying the structure of the momentum-space propagator, we are able to extract interesting physics, much of which is qualitatively different from that of flat branes. We find that 1) there can be a set of graviton-like particles which mediate brane gravity at different scales; 2) localized gravity can exist even on de Sitter branes in Minkowski space; 3) Kaluza-Klein modes also contribute to conventional 4-…
We study the instantons describing the production of particles at the ends of codimension-one objects (strings and struts) in $(2+1)$-dimensional Minkowski and de Sitter spaces. A Minkowskian background allows only for systems with vanishing total mass, so that either negative mass particles or negative tension struts are required. On a de Sitter background, on the other hand, we find processes describing the production of string/particle systems with no negative energies involved. We also compute the probabilities of creating and of breaking an infinite cosmic string in de Sitter space. We pe…
We consider the critical gravity theory with a scalar field in four dimensions. We find that this theory has the solution corresponding to the de Sitter (dS), anti-de Sitter (AdS), and Minkowski background depending on whether the action includes the cosmological term or not. The Minkowski background is the solution which cannot be obtained in the model without a scalar field. At the critical point, we show that the Abbott-Deser (AD) mass of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole and the energy for the massless graviton vanish, whose situation is not changed from the model without a scal…
It is shown that the isometry group of the de Sitter spacetime includes two different three-dimensional Abelian subgroups which transform between themselves through a discrete isometry corresponding to the time reversal in the five-dimensional Minkowski spacetime embedding the de Sitter one. The eigenfunctions of the generators of these Abelian subgroups form two different sets of quantum modes correlated by the mentioned isometry.
We study the generation of gravitational radiation by sources moving in the de Sitter background. Exploiting the maximal symmetry and the conformal flatness of de Sitter space-time we prove that the derivation of this gravitational radiation can be done along the same lines as in Minkowski space-time. A gauge is chosen in which all the physical and unphysical modes of the graviton are those of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in de Sitter space-time and a massless field in Minkowski space-time. The graviton retarded Green's function and the Schwinger commutator function are computed i…
A gravity theory without masses can be constructed in Minkowski spaces using a geometric Minkowski potential. The related affine spacelike spheres can be seen as the regions of the Minkowski spacelike vectors characterized by a constant Minkowski gravitational potential. These spheres point out, for each dimension $n \geq 3$, spacetime models, the de Sitter ones, which satisfy Einstein's field equations in absence of matter. In other words, it is possible to generate geometrically the cosmological constant. Even if a lot of possible parameterizations have been proposed, each one highlighting s…
The concordance model of cosmology favours a universe with a tiny positive cosmological constant. A tiniest positive constant curvature, profoundly alters the asymptotic structure, forcing a re-look at a theory of gravitational radiation. Even for compact astrophysical sources, the intuition from Minkowski background is challenged at every step. Nevertheless, at least for candidate sources such as compact binaries, it is possible to quantify influence of the cosmological constant, as small corrections to the leading order Minkowski background results. Employing suitably chosen Fermi normal coo…
Non-extreme walls (bubbles with two insides) and ultra-extreme walls (bubbles of false vacuum decay) are discussed. Their respective energy densities are higher and lower than that of the corresponding extreme (supersymmetric), planar domain wall. These singularity free space-times exhibit non-trivial causal structure analogous to certain non-extreme black holes. We focus on anti-de~Sitter--Minkowski walls and comment on Minkowski--Minkowski walls with trivial extreme limit, as well as walls adjacent to de~Sitter space-times with no extreme limit.
Instabilities of two dimensional (1+1) de Sitter space induced by interacting fields are studied. As for the case of flat Minkowski space, several interacting fermion models can be translated into free boson ones and vice versa. It is found that interacting fermion theories do not lead to any instabilities, while the interacting bosonic sine-Gordon model does lead to a breakdown of de Sitter symmetry and to the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the S matrix.
Superstring theories in ten dimensions allow spacetime supersymmetry breaking at the string scale at the expense of controlled Minkowski backgrounds. The next-to-maximally symmetric backgrounds, found by Dudas and Mourad, involve a warped compactification on an interval associated with codimension-one defects. We generalize these solutions by varying the effective field theory parameters, and we discuss the dimensional reduction on the interval. In particular, we show that scalars and form fields decouple in a certain range of dimensions, yielding Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. Moreover, we find …
