We construct Kaluza--Klein-type models with a de Sitter or Minkowski bundle in the de Sitter or Poincaré gauge theory of gravity, respectively. A manifestly gauge-invariant formalism has been given. The gravitational dynamics is constructed by the geometry of the de Sitter or Minkowski bundle and a global section which plays an important role in the gauge-invariant formalism. Unlike the old Kaluza--Klein-type models of gauge theory of gravity, a suitable cosmological term can be obtained in the Lagrangian of our models and the models in the spin-current-free and torsion-free limit will come back to general relativity with a corresponding cosmological term. We also generalize the results to the case with a variable cosmological term.
We investigate solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation in a class of five dimensional geometries presenting the same symmetries and asymptotic structure as the Gross-Perry-Sorkin monopole solution. Apart from globally regular metrics, we consider also squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes backgrounds.
This is a pedagogical introduction to original Kaluza-Klein theory and its salient features. Most of the technical calculations are given in detail and the nature of gravitons is discussed.
We studied the Raychaudhuri equation in Kaluza-Klein space-time. We derived an additional term that is solely due to Kaluza-Klein's unification. This term affects the defocus of world lines near the singularity of charged higher-dimensional black holes. We illustrated it with a static higher-dimensional black hole generated by Einstein-Maxwell equations. It has been found that the term derived modifies the repulsive effect of kaluza Klein scalar on world lines. We proved some mathematical theorems which give an insight into the interior of the black holes.
We consider a Kaluza-Klein string solution of five-dimensional spacetime. We study its physical properties as appearing in (3+1) spacetime. This metric embraces several different aspects of solutions. The two most notable examples are the dipole and the boosted dipole solutions. In general, the 4D metric is a rotating stationary solution with both electric and magnetic fields. The extension to the Kaluza-Klein dipole soliton solution is briefly discussed.
We investigate excitation of Kaluza-Klein modes due to the parametric resonance caused by oscillation of radius of compactification. We consider a gravitational perturbation around a D-dimensional spacetime, which we compactify on a (D-4)-sphere to obtain a 4-dimensional theory. The perturbation includes the so-called Kaluza-Klein modes, which are massive in 4-dimension, as well as zero modes, which is massless in 4-dimension. These modes appear as scalar, vector and second-rank symmetric tensor fields in the 4-dimensional theory. Since Kaluza-Klein modes are troublesome in cosmology, quanta o…
General formulation of geometrization matter problem by scalar field $ϕ=\sqrt{-G_{55}}$ with the help of possibilities of classical 5-D Kaluza-Klein theory is given. Mathematical integrability conditions for such geometrization for the case of perfect fluid are derived.
An exact solution of the source-free Kaluza-Klein field equations is presented. It is a 5D generalization of the Robinson-Trautman quasi-spherical gravitational wave with a cosmological constant. The properties of the 5D solution are briefly described.
Three families of exact solutions of Einstein field equations are found. Each family contains three parameters. Two of these families represent thick domain walls in a five dimensional Kaluza-Klein spacetime. The dynamical behaviour of our models is briefly discussed. The spacetime in all the cases is found to be reflection symmetric with respect to the wall.
The large-angular-scale anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation in multidimensional cosmological models (Kaluza-Klein models) is studied. Limits on parameters of the models imposed by the experimental data are obtained. It is shown that in principle there is a room for Kaluza-Klein models as possible candidates for the description of the Early Universe. However, the obtained limits are very restrictive and none of the concrete models, analyzed in the article, satisfy them.
In this paper, we consider a new vacuum solution of the Kaluza-Klien theory which resembles the Taub-NUT metric in five dimensions and we investigate its physical properties as projected into four dimensions. We show that the Taub-NUT Kaluza-Klein vacuum solution in five dimensions is a static magnetic monopole in four dimensions. We find that the four dimensional matter properties do not obey the equation of state of radiation and there is no event horizon.
A review of the Kaluza-Klein formulation is provided, with a particular emphasis on the geometrization issue. The failure at reproducing quantum numbers of particles and the appearance of huge mass terms are outlined. The possibility to solve these points by an extended approach based on an averaging procedure is discussed.
We review and discuss the original Kaluza-Klein theory in the framework of modern embedding theories of the spacetime, such as the recent induced matter approach. We show that in spite of their seeming similarity they constitute rather distinct proposals as far as their geometrical structure is concerned.
In induced matter Kaluza-Klein gravity theory the solution of the dynamics equations for the test particle on null path leads to additional force in four-dimensional space-time. We find such force from five-dimensional geodesic line equations and apply this approach to analysis of the asymmetrically warped space-time.
In this work spherically symmetric solutions to 5D Kaluza-Klein theory, with "electric" and/or "magnetic" fields are examined. Different relative strengths of the "electric" and "magnetic" charges of the solutions are studied by varying certain parameters in our metric ansatz. As the strengths of these two charges are varied the resultant spacetime exhibits an interesting "evolution".
Kaluza-Klein theory is a popular alternative theory of gravity, with both non-rotating and rotating black hole solutions known. This allows for the possibility that the theory could be observationally tested. We present a model which calculates the reflection spectrum of a black hole accretion disk system, where the black hole is described by a rotating solution of the Kaluza-Klein theory. We also use this model to analyze X-ray data from the stella-mass black hole in GRS 1915+105 and provide constraints on the free parameters of the Kaluza-Klein black holes.
We give a brief review of recent developments in five-dimensional theories of spacetime and highlight their geometrical structure mainly in connection with the Campbell-Magaard theorem.
We investigate the compact Kaluza-Klein cosmology in which modified holographic dark energy is interacting with dark matter. Using this scenario, we evaluate equation of state parameter as well as equation of evolution of the modified holographic dark energy. Further, it is shown that the generalized second law of thermodynamics holds without any constraint.
The dimensional reduction of Papapetrou equations is performed in a 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein background and Dixon-Souriau results for the motion of a charged spinning body are obtained. The splitting provides an electric dipole moment, and, for elementary particles, the induced parity and time-reversal violations are explained.
We discuss a semiclassical treatment to inflationary models from Kaluza-Klein theory without the cylinder condition. We conclude that the evolution of the early universe could be described by a geodesic trayectory of a cosmological 5D metric here proposed, so that the effective 4D FRW background metric should be a hypersurface on a constant fifth dimension.
We show that the principle of least action is generally inconsistent with the usual Kaluza-Klein program, the higher dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action being unbounded from below. This inconsistency is also present in other theories with higher dimensions like supergravity. Hence, we conclude to the necessity of an external scalar field to compensate this flaw.
In this article we study the geodesic motion of charged particles in the spacetime of an extremal rotating dyonic black hole in Kaluza-Klein theory. We derive the equations of motion and present their analytical solutions in terns of elliptic and hyperelliptic functions. Furthermore, we analyze the geodesic motions with the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials.
In this paper, based on the theory of parametric resonance, we propose a cosmological criterion on ways of compactification: we rule out such a model of compactification that there exists a Kaluza-Klein mode satisfying $2m_{KK}=ω_b$, where $m_{KK}$ is mass of the Kaluza-Klein mode and $ω_b$ is the frequency of oscillation of the radius of the compact manifold on which extra dimensions are compactified. This is a restatement of the criterion proposed previously [S. Mukohyama, Phys. Rev. {\bf D57}, 6191 (1998)]. As an example, we consider a model of compactification by a sphere and investigate K…
We develop a new mechanism for the accumulation of conserved numbers in the early Universe in Kaluza-Klein-like theories. The relaxation of the primordial extra space perturbations existing in the early Universe leads to the establishment of a symmetric final state and the appearance of Killing vectors. As a result, the initial non-zero value of symmetry associated numbers occurs after the inflation. We show this conceptual idea on a toy model of 2-dimensional apple-like extra space with U(1) symmetry. This mechanism naturally arises in the Kaluza-Klein theories and can be used to explain the …
Path and path deviation equations for charged, spinning and spinning charged objects in different versions of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory using a modified Bazanski Lagrangian have been derived. The significance of motion in five dimensions, especially for a charged spinning object, has been examined. We have also extended the modified Bazanski approach to derive the path and path deviation equations of a test particle in a version of non-symmetric KK theory.
We investigate the destroying of charged and rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-(dilaton) theory. We show that a test particle with some appropriate properties in the black hole background can turn the black hole into a naked singularity. In this work, we neglect the self-force, self-energy, and radiative effects as considered by some others in literature. As the result, we are able to show that the Kerr-Newman and Kaluza-Klein black holes can be destroyed by the test particle. Furthermore, for Kaluza-Klein black hole, we consider the overspinning of the black hole by a neutral test scal…
In this paper we investigate the strong gravitational lansing in a charged squashed Kaluza-Klein Gödel black hole. The deflection angle is considered by the logarithmic term proposed by Bozza et al. Then we study the variation of deflection angle and its parameters $\bar{a}$ and $\bar{b}$ . We suppose that the supermassive black hole in the galaxy center can be considered by a charged squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole in a Gödel background and by relation between lensing parameters and observables, we estimate the observables for different values of charge, extra dimension and Gödel parameters.
We study the shadow produced by a spinning Kaluza-Klein black hole in Einstein gravity coupled to a Maxwell field and a dilaton. The size and the shape of the shadow depend on the mass, the charge, and the angular momentum. We find that, for fixed values of these parameters, the shadow is slightly larger and less deformed than for its Kerr-Newman counterpart.
In the context of Kaluza-Klein theories, we consider a model in which the universe is filled with a perfect fluid described by a barotropic equation of state. An analysis of density perturbations employing the synchronous gauge shows that there are cases where these perturbations have an exponential growth during a de Sitter phase evolution in the external space.
The effects of phase space deformations on Kalutza-Klein cosmology are studied. The deformation is introduced by modifying the symplectic structure of the minisuperspace variables. In the deformed model, we find an accelerating scale factor and therefore infer the existence of an effective cosmological constant from the phase space deformation parameter $β$.
To better understand the scalar field typical of higher-dimensional extensions of general relativity, we analyse three classes of solutions. In all, the field equation for the extra dimension resembles the Klein-Gordon equation, and we evaluate the strength of the source. Our results show that the scalar field is coupled to matter, and may be regarded as generating it.
We analyze the existence of inflationary solutions in an inhomogeneous Kaluza-Klein cosmological model in 4+n dimensions. It is shown that the 5-dimensional case is the exception rather than the rule, in the sense that the system is integrable (under the assumption of the equation of state $ρ= kp$) for any value of k. It is also shown that the cases k=0 and k=1/3 are integrable if and only if n=1.
The stability of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes is studied. The squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole looks like five dimensional black hole in the vicinity of horizon and four dimensional Minkowski spacetime with a circle at infinity. In this sense, squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes can be regarded as black holes in the Kaluza-Klein spacetimes. Using the symmetry of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes, $SU(2)\times U(1)\simeq U(2)$, we obtain master equations for a part of the metric perturbations relevant to the stability. The analysis based on the master equations gives a strong evidence for th…
We consider the nonlinear stability of the Kaluza-Klein monopole viewed as the static solution of the five dimensional vacuum Einstein equations. Using both numerical and analytical methods we give evidence that the Kaluza-Klein monopole is asymptotically stable within the cohomogeneity-two biaxial Bianchi IX ansatz recently introduced in \cite{bcs}. We also show that for sufficiently large perturbations the Kaluza-Klein monopole loses stability and collapses to a Kaluza-Klein black hole. The relevance of our results for the stability of BPS states in M/String theory is briefly discussed.
We use local counterterm prescriptions for asymptotically flat space to compute the action and conserved quantities in five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theories. As an application of these prescriptions we compute the mass of the Kaluza-Klein magnetic monopole. We find consistent results with previous approaches that employ a background subtraction.
The Kaluza-Klein idea of extra spacetime dimensions continues to pervade current attempts to unify the fundamental forces, but in ways somewhat different from that originally envisaged. We present a modern perspective on the role of internal dimensions in physics, focussing in particular on superstring theory. A novel result is the interpretation of Kaluza-Klein string states as extreme black holes.(Talk delivered at the Oskar Klein Centenary Nobel Symposium, Stockholm, September 19-21, 1994.)
Using the SL(2,R)-duality in a dimensionally reduced spacetime in (the bosonic sector of) five-dimensional minimal supergravity, we construct general Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions which carry six independent charges, its mass, angular momentum along four dimensions, electric and magnetic charges of the Maxwell fields in addition to Kaluza-Klein electric and magnetic monopole charges.
We compute the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the non-supersymmetric SO(3)$\,\times\,$SO(3)-invariant AdS$_4$ vacuum of 11-dimensional supergravity, whose lowest-lying Kaluza-Klein modes belong to a consistent truncation to 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity and are stable. We show that, nonetheless, the higher Kaluza-Klein modes become tachyonic so that this non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacuum is perturbatively unstable within 11-dimensional supergravity. This represents the first example of unstable higher Kaluza-Klein modes and provides further evidence for the AdS swampland conjecture, which …
We explore the obsevability of extra dimensions through 5-dimensional squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes residing in the Kaluza-Klein spacetime. With the expectation that the Hawking radiation reflects the 5-dimensional nature of the squashed horizon, we study the Hawking radiation of a scalar field in the squashed black hole background. As a result, we show that the luminosity of Hawking radiation tells us the size of the extra dimension, namely, the squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes open a window to extra dimensions.
We present a Kaluza-Klein reduction for the Unruh response that a brane, in an AdS bulk would experience due to its acceleration. The Unruh radiation is realised as particle production on the brane for each of the Kaluza-Klein modes. A correction, coming from the massive modes, is calculated for the standard Unruh effect in Minkowski spacetime and it is found that the response coming from these modes is exponentially suppressed.
We construct exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton field equations in five dimensions, which describe general configurations of charged and static black holes sitting on a Kaluza-Klein bubble. More specifically we discuss the configurations describing two black holes sitting on a Kaluza-Klein bubble and also the general charged static black Saturn balanced by a Kaluza-Klein bubble. A straightforward extension of the solution generating technique leads to a new solution describing the charged static black Saturn on the Taub-bolt instanton. We compute the conserved charges and investig…
A brief review is given of black holes in Kaluza-Klein theory. This includes both solutions which are homogeneous around the compact extra dimension and those which are not.
Spherically symmetric, vacuum solutions in 5D and 7D Kaluza-Klein theory are obtained. These solutions are flux tubes with constant cross-sectional size, located between (+) and (-) Kaluza-Klein's ``electrical'' and ``magnetic'' charges disposed respectively at $\pm\infty$ and filled by constant Kaluza-Klein ``electrical'' and ``magnetic'' fields. These objects are surprisingly similar to the flux tubes which forms between two monopoles in Type-II superconductors and also the hypothesized color field flux tube that is thought to form between two quarks in the QCD vacuum.
We study evaporation process of black strings which are typical examples of Kaluza-Klein black holes. Taking into account the backreaction of the Hawking radiation, we deduce the evolution equation for the radion field. By solving the evolution equation, we find that the shape of the internal space is necked by the Hawking radiation and the amount of the deformation becomes large as the evaporation proceeds. Based on this analysis, we speculate that the Kaluza-Klein black holes would be excised from the Kaluza-Klein spacetime before the onset of the Gregory-Laflamme instability and therefore b…
We reconsider Schoen and Yau's proof of the positive mass theorem from the extra dimensional point of view, and we introduce a modified argument to prove the theorem in the Kaluza-Klein picture. We consider in this study an alternative condition to Jang's equation, which makes the argument more physically intuitive.
Using a Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction, and further imposing a conformal Killing symmetry on the reduced metric generated by the dilaton, we show an Ansatz that yields many of the known stationary axisymmetric solutions to TMG.
S-duality of hetertotic / type II string theory compactified on a six dimensional torus requires the existence of Kaluza-Klein dyons, carrying winding charge. We identify the zero modes of the Kaluza-Klein monopole solution which are responsible for these dyonic excitations, and show that we get the correct degeneracy of dyons as predicted by S-duality. The self-dual harmonic two form on the Euclidean Taub-NUT space plays a crucial role in this construction.
We study static vortex type solutions of pure gravity for $D \geq 4+1 $. Non-singular vortex solutions can be obtained by considering periodic Kaluza-Klein monopoles. We also show that away from the center of the vortices the space is described by the gravitational instantons derived from minimal surfaces.
There are documents which show that Wolfgang Pauli developed in 1953 the first consistent generalization of the five-dimensional theory of Kaluza, Klein, Fock and others to a higher dimensional internal space. Because he saw no way to give masses to the gauge bosons, he refrained from publishing his results formally.
A formalization of the recently introduced formalism for inflation is developed from noncompact Kaluza-Klein theory. In particular, the case for a single scalar field inflationary model is studied. We obtain that the scalar potential, which assume different representations in different frames, has a geometrical origin.
In this paper we investigate the strong gravitational lensing in a charged squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole. We suppose that the supermassive black hole in the galaxy center can be considered by a charged squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole and then we study the strong gravitational lensing theory and estimate the numerical values for parameters and observables of it. We explore the effects of the scale of extra dimension $ρ_0$ and the charge of black hole $ρ_q$ on these parameters and observables.
Based on the equivalence between a gauge theory for the translation group and general relativity, a teleparallel version of the non-abelian Kaluza-Klein theory is constructed. In this theory, only the fiber-space turns out to be higher-dimensional, spacetime being kept always four-dimensional. The resulting model is a gauge theory that unifies, in the Kaluza-Klein sense, gravitational and gauge fields. In contrast to the ordinary Kaluza-Klein models, this theory defines a natural length-scale for the compact sub-manifold of the fiber space, which is shown to be of the order of the Planck lengt…
Exceptional field theories yield duality covariant formulations of supergravity. We show that they provide a highly efficient tool to compute the Kaluza-Klein mass spectra associated to compactifications around various background geometries relevant for string theory and holographic applications. This includes geometries with little to no remaining symmetries, hardly accessible to standard methods. As an illustration, we work out the masses of some higher Kaluza-Klein multiplets around warped geometries corresponding to some prominent ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric AdS vacua in maximal supergra…
A free test particle in 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein spacetime will show its electricity in the reduced 4-dimensional spacetime when it moves along the fifth dimension. In the light of this observation, we study the coupling of a 5-dimensional dust field with the Kaluza-Klein gravity. It turns out that the dust field can curve the 5-dimensional spacetime in such a way that it provides exactly the source of the electromagnetic field in the 4-dimensional spacetime after the dimensional reduction.
In previous paper, we present an SO(3) Wu-Yang-like Kaluza-Klein dyon so- lution satisfies the Einstein equation in the seven-dimensional spacetimes. In this note, we will show an alternative approach using an orthonormal frame, the Cartan's structure equations, and calculating the affine spin connection one-form,curvature tensor and Ricci tensor. The results from these two different methods are coincident.
We study the hydrodynamics of relativistic fluids with several conserved global charges (i.e., several species of particles) by performing a Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of a neutral fluid on a N-torus. Via fluid/gravity correspondence, this allows us to describe the long-wavelength dynamics of black branes with several Kaluza-Klein charges. We obtain the equation of state and transport coefficients of the charged fluid directly from those of the higher-dimensional neutral fluid. We specialize these results for the fluids dual to Kaluza-Klein black branes.
We construct a class of stationary and axisymmetric solutions to the 5D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity, which describe configurations of charged rotating black objects with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics. The solutions are constructed by uplifting a vacuum seed solution to six dimensions, performing a boost, and a subsequent circle reduction. We investigate the physical properties of the charged solutions, and obtain their general relations to the properties of the vacuum seed. We also derive the gyromagnetic ratio and the Smarr-like relations. As particular cases we study three solutions, which d…
In the paper we consider some consequences of the Nonsymmetric Kaluza-Klein (Jordan-Thiry) Theory. We calculate: primordial fluctuation spectrum functions, spectral indices, and first derivatives of spectral indices.
We calculate dimensional reduction of gravitational flux tube solutions in the scheme of Kaluza-Klein theory. The fifth dimension is compacified to a region of Planck size. Assuming the width of the tube to be also Planck size we obtain string-like object with physical fields originated from an initial 5D metric. The dynamics of these fields is inner one.
