The observer dependence of the quasi-local energy (QLE) and momentum in the Schwarzschild geometry is illustrated. Using the Brown-York prescription, the QLE for families of non-geodesic and geodesic observers penetrating the event horizon is obtained. An explicit shell-building process is presented and the binding energy is computed in terms of the QLE measured by a static observer field at a radius outside the horizon radius. The QLE for a radially geodesic observer field freely-falling from infinity is shown to vanish. Finally, a simple relation for the dynamics of the quasi-local momentum density for a geodesic observer field is noted.
In this paper we construct the Fermi coordinates along any arbitrary line in simple analytical way without use the orthogonal frames and their parallel transport. In this manner we extend the Eddington approach to the construction of the Fermi metric in terms of the Riemann tensor. In the second part of the present article we show how the proposed approach works practically by applying it for deriving the Fermi coordinates for the static observer in the Schwarzschild spacetime.
It is well known that observers will be accelerated when they approach the planets. Thus, discussing the properties of accelerating observers in the Schwarzschild space is of sense. For the sake of simplicity, we can construct these observers' world lines by comparing with the observers in the Hawking effect and Unruh effect, whose world lines are both hyperbolic curves in the appropriate coordinates. We do it after defining a certain special null hypersurface in the Kruskal coordinates. Our result shows that these accelerating observers defined in our paper can also detect the radiation with …
The aim of this Letter is rather pedagogical. We considered the static spherically symmetric ensemble of observers, having finite bare mass and trying to measure geometrical and physical properties of the environmental static (Schwarzschild) space-time. It is shown that, using the photon rockets (which the mass together with the mass of their fuel is also taken into account) they can managed to keep themselves on the fixed value of radius. The process of diminishing the total bare mass up to zero lasts infinitely long time. It is important that the problem is solved self-consistently, i.e., wi…
We developed realistic fully general relativistic computer code for simulation of optical projection in a strong, spherically symmetric gravitational field. Standard theoretical analysis of optical projection for an observer in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole is extended to black hole spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant, i.e, Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. Influence of the cosmological constant is investigated for static observers and observers radially free-falling from static radius. Simulation includes effects of gravitational lensing, multiple images, Doppler …
Studying particle motion in the gravitational field of a black hole from the perspective of different observers is important for separating the coordinate artifacts from the physical phenomena. In this paper, we show that a freely falling test particle exhibits gravitational repulsion by a black hole as seen by an asymptotic observer, whereas nothing of the kind happens as recorded by a freely falling observer or by an observer located at a finite distance from the event horizon. This analysis is carried out for a general Reissner-Nordström, an extremal Reissner-Nordström, and a Schwarzschild …
We derive exact expressions for the relativistic redshift between an Earth-bound observer, that is meant to model a standard clock on the Earth's surface, and various (geodesic) observers in the Schwarzschild spacetime. We assume that the observers exchange radial light signals to compare the frequencies of standard clocks, which they transport along their respective worldlines. We calculate the redshift between an Earth-bound clock and static observers, observers in radial free fall, on circular geodesics, and on arbitrary bound quasi-elliptical orbits. For the latter case, we consider as exa…
We explore the connections between various coordinate systems associated with observers moving inwardly along radial geodesics in the Schwarzschild geometry. Painlevé-Gullstrand (PG) time is adapted to freely falling observers dropped from rest from infinity; Lake-Martel-Poisson (LMP) time coordinates are adapted to observers who start at infinity with non-zero initial inward velocity; Gautreau-Hoffmann (GH) time coordinates are adapted to observers dropped from rest from a finite distance from the black hole horizon. We construct from these an LMP family and a proper-time family of time coord…
In this research note we introduce a new approximation of photon geodesics in Schwarzschild spacetime which is especially useful to describe highly bent trajectories, for which the angle between the initial emission position and the line of sight to the observer approaches $π$: this corresponds to the points behind the central mass of the Schwarzschild metric with respect to the observer. The approximation maintains very good accuracy overall, with deviations from the exact numerical results below $1\%$ up to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) located at $6~GM/c^2$.
We study the kinematic relative velocity of general test particles with respect to stationary observers (using spherical coordinates) in Schwarzschild spacetime, obtaining that its modulus does not depend on the observer, unlike Fermi, spectroscopic and astrometric relative velocities. We study some fundamental particular cases, generalizing some results given in other work about stationary and radial free-falling test particles. Moreover, we give a new result about test particles with circular geodesic orbits: the modulus of their kinematic relative velocity with respect to any stationary obs…
We obtain a (5+1)-dimensional global flat embedding of modified Schwarzschild black hole in rainbow gravity. We show that local free-fall temperature in rainbow gravity, which depends on different energy $ω$ of a test particle, is finite at the event horizon for a freely falling observer, while local temperature is divergent at the event horizon for a fiducial observer. Moreover, these temperatures in rainbow gravity satisfy similar relations to those of the Schwarzschild black hole except overall factor $g(ω)$, which plays a key role of rainbow functions in this embedding approach.
The well-known Schwarzschild black hole was first obtained as a stationary, spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein's vacuum field equations. But until thirty years later, efforts were made for the analytic extension from the exterior area $(r>2GM)$ to the interior one $(r<2GM)$. As a contrast to its maximally extension in the Kruskal coordinates, we provide a comoving coordinate system from the view of the observers freely falling into the black hole in the radial direction. We find an interesting fact that the spatial part in this coordinate system is maximally symmetric $(E_3)$, i.e.…
A new method is applied for deriving the redshift and shadow of a Schwarzschild black hole moving freely in the de Sitter expanding universe as recorded by a co-moving remote observer. This method is manly algebraic focusing on the transformation of the conserved quantities under the de Sitter isometry relating the black hole proper co-moving frame to observer's one. Hereby one extracts the general expressions of the redshifts and shadows of the black holes having peculiar velocities but their expressions are too extended to be written down here. Therefore, only some particular cases and intui…
We show that the field equations of the Schwarzschild geometry are invariant under passive Lorentz transformations to a freely falling system. We decompose the field equations with respect to the accelerated system and find that the force of gravity is not transformed away but dynamically compensated.
The boundary of any observer's spacetime is the boundary that divides what the observer can see from what they cannot see. The boundary of an observer's spacetime in the presence of a black hole is not the true (future event) horizon of the black hole, but rather the illusory horizon, the dimming, redshifting surface of the star that collapsed to the black hole long ago. The illusory horizon is the source of Hawking radiation seen by observers both outside and inside the true horizon. The perceived acceleration (gravity) on the illusory horizon sets the characteristic frequency scale of Hawkin…
In the context of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR) we have investigated the role of local observers, associated with tetrad fields, in description of the gravitational interaction through the concepts of the gravitoelectric (GE) and gravitomagnetic (GM) fields. We start by analyzing the gravitoelectromagnetic (GEM) fields obtained from an observer freely falling in the Schwarzschild space-time. Then, we investigated whether it is possible to distinguish between this situation and to be at rest in the Minkowski space-time. We conclude that, although there are non-zero co…
We study the optical appearance of a thin accretion disk around a Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string with a semi-analytic method of Luminet [11]. Direct and secondary images with different parameters observed by a distant observer is plotted. The cosmic string parameter s can modify the shape and size of the thin disk image. We calculate and plot the distribution of both redshift and observed flux as seen by distant observers at different inclination angles. Those distributions are dependent on the inclination angel of the observer and cosmic parameter s.
Quasi-local energies for constantly accelerating observers in Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ), Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes are derived. The energies are expressed in terms of acceleration, cosmological constant, and area, quantities measurable by the observers. Based on results from quantum fields in curved spacetime for the redshifted Hawking temperature, entropy and thermodynamic-like laws are briefly explored in the three spacetimes.
We investigate a foliation of Schwarzschild spacetime determined by observers freely falling in the radial direction. This is described using a generalisation of Gullstrand-Painlevé coordinates which allows for any possible radial velocity. This foliation provides a contrast with the usual static foliation implied by Schwarzschild coordinates. The $3$-dimensional spaces are distinct for the static and falling observers, so the embedding diagrams, spatial measurement, simultaneity, and time at infinity are also distinct, though the $4$-dimensional spacetime is unchanged. Our motivation is conce…
We investigate perturbations of the Schwarzschild geometry using a linearization of the Einstein vacuum equations within a Bondi-Sachs, or null cone, formalism. We develop a numerical method to calculate the quasi-normal modes, and present results for the case $\ell=2$. The values obtained are different to those of a Schwarzschild black hole, and we interpret them as quasi-normal modes of a Schwarzschild white hole.
In this paper we discuss the Casimir effect in a small cavity, freely falling from spatial infinity in spacetime geometry outside of a Schwarzschild black hole. Our main goal is to search for possible changes in the vacuum energy, as well as particle creation inside the falling cavity, with respect to a comoving observer. Working in the Lemaître chart and assuming a cavity size $L$ much smaller than the Schwarzschild radius ($L/r_g\ll 1$), we solve the Klein-Gordon equation for a massless scalar field confined within the cavity in the reference frame of the comoving observer. We follow Schwing…
A one-fold infinity of explicit quasi-stationary regular line elements for the Schwarzschild geometry is obtained directly from the vacuum Einstein equations. The class includes the familiar Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates, and the coordinates discussed recently by Kraus and Wilczek.
The extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time is a spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's equations with a cosmological constant Lambda and mass parameter m>0 which is characterized by the condition that 9 Lambda m^2=1. The global structure of this space-time is here analyzed in detail. Conformal and embedding diagrams are constructed, and synchronous coordinates which are suitable for a discussion of the cosmic no-hair conjecture are presented. The permitted geodesic motions are also analyzed. By a careful investigation of the geodesics and the equations of geodesic deviation, it is sh…
We discuss the problem of canonical quantization of a free real massive scalar field in the Schwarzschild spacetime. It is shown that a consistent procedure of canonical quantization of the field can be carried out without taking into account the black hole interior, so that in the resulting theory the canonical commutation relations are satisfied exactly, and the Hamiltonian has the standard form. However, unlike some papers, in which the expansion of the quantum field in spherical harmonics is used, here we use an expansion in scatteringlike states for energies larger than the mass of the fi…
The exterior and interior Schwarzschild solutions are rewritten replacing the usual radial variable with an angular one. This allows to obtain some results otherwise less apparent or even hidden in other coordinate systems.
Geodesic observers in cosmology are revisited. The coordinates based on freely falling observers introduced by Gautreau in de Sitter and Einstein-de Sitter spaces (and, previously, by Gautreau and Hoffmann in Schwarzschild space) are extended to general FLRW universes. We identify situations in which the relation between geodesic and comoving coordinates can be expressed explicitly in terms of elementary functions. In general, geodesic coordinates in cosmology turn out to be rather cumbersome and limited to the region below the apparent horizon.
Communication between a free-falling observer and an observer hovering above the Schwarzschild horizon of a black hole suffers from Unruh-Hawking noise, which degrades communication channels. Ignoring time dilation, which affects all channels equally, we show that for bosonic communication using single and dual rail encoding the classical channel capacity reaches a finite value and the quantum coherent information tends to zero. We conclude that classical correlations still exist at infinite acceleration, whereas the quantum coherence is fully removed.
We consider an observer who moves under the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and absorbs a photon. There are two different situations when (i) a photon comes from infinity, (ii) it is emitted by another observer under the horizon (say, by a surface of a collapsing star). We analyze the frequency change for absorption near the event horizon, in an intermediate region and near the singularity and compare the results for both scenarios. Near the singularity, in both scenarios infinite redshift (in the pure radial case) or infinite blueshift are possible, depending on angular momenta of a p…
We present an implementation of a ray tracing code in the Schwarzschild metric. We aim at building a numerical code with a correct implementation of both special (aberration, amplification, Doppler) and general (deflection of light, lensing, gravitational redshift) relativistic effects so as to simulate what an observer with arbitrary velocity would see near, or possibly within, the black hole. We also pay some specific attention to perform a satisfactory rendering of stars. Using this code, we then show several unexplored features of the maximal analytical extension of the metric. In particul…
We address the concerns raised by the author of "Comment: Some exact quasinormal frequencies of a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime" appeared in arXiv:1807.05940. In particular, we explain why the analysis in our paper [Phys. Rev. D{\bf{98}}, 024017 (2018)] is relevant and correct.
A new branch of quasinormal modes for a massless scalar field propagating on the Schwarzschild spacetime was recently announced [1807.04513]. We review the quasinormal modes characterisation and arguments and identify the flaws in their proof. Then, we preset explicit counterexamples to such arguments. Finally, we study the modes via alternative methods and do not find the new branch. We conclude against their interpretation.
The Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates are extended to describe the black hole in the cosmological environment: the Schwarzschild-de-Sitter black hole, which has two horizons. The extension is made using the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism. In this extension, which describes the metric in the whole range of radial coordinates $0<r < \infty$, there is the point $r=r_0$ at which the shift function (velocity) changes sign. At this point the observer is at rest, while the observers at $r<r_0$ are free falling to the black hole and the observers at $r>r_0$ are free falling towards the cosmological hor…
A strict derivation of the Schwarzschild metric, based solely on Newton's law of free fall and the equivalence principle, is presented. In the light of it, regarding Schwarzschild's coordinates as representing the point of view of a distant observer resting relative to the source of a centrally symmetric gravitational field, proves illegitimate. Such point of view is better represented by the Painleve-Gullstrand system of coordinates, which agrees with Schwarzschild's system with respect to its spatial coordinates and time scale, but disagrees with respect to the relation of simultaneity. A du…
We have studied the quasinormal modes and the late-time tail behaviors of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in the Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string. Although the metric is locally identical to that of the Schwarzschild black hole so that the presence of the string will not imprint in the motion of test particles, we found that quasinormal modes and the late-time tails can reflect physical signatures of the cosmic string. Compared with the scalar and electromagnetic fields, the gravitational perturbation decays slower, which could be more interesting to …
We show that static sources coupled to a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime give rise to emission and absorption of zero-energy particles due to the presence of Hawking radiation. This is in complete analogy with the description of the bremsstrahlung by a uniformly accelerated charge from the coaccelerated observers' point of view. The response rate of the source is found to coincide with that in Minkowski spacetime as a function of its proper acceleration. This result may be viewed as restoration of the equivalence principle by the Hawking effect.
In this paper we study the geodesic structure of the Schwarzschild black hole in rainbow gravity analyzing the behavior of null and time-like geodesic. We find that the structure of the geodesics essentially does not change when the semi-classical effects are included. However, we can distinguish different scenarios if we take into account the effects of rainbow gravity. Depending on the type of rainbow functions under consideration, inertial and external observers see very different situations in radial and non radial motion of a test particles.
Scalar field vacuum energy and particle creation in a 3D Casimir apparatus, freely falling in the Schwarzschild spacetime, are considered in the reference frame of a comoving observer. Following Schwinger's proper time approach, Casimir energy is evaluated from the effective action, resulting in a small correction to the flat spacetime case. Besides, a tiny amount of quanta excited out from the vacuum is found. Both effects are discussed, drawing attention to the role of the underlying spacetime dimensionality.
We study further a general relativistic mechanism for the acquisition of tidal energy by free test particles near a gravitationally collapsed configuration. Specifically, we investigate the solutions of timelike geodesic equation in a Fermi normal coordinate system established about the world line of an accelerated observer that remains spatially at rest in the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. Such static observers in effect define the rest frame of the collapsed source. The gain in tidal energy is due to local spacetime curvature. Previous work in this direction in connection with astrophysi…
Particles moving on a radial ray with respect to a Schwarzschild mass are shown to have SU(1,1)/U(1) dynamical symmetry. This symmetry is used to identify a global time variable shared by all test particles moving on a radial ray. With this time variable, Hamilton's equations for particles on a radial ray have the form of the harmonic oscillator. The SU(1,1)/U(1) symmetry, in conjunction with the well defined time variable and observer, assists in determining the quantization of the motion of the test particles.
An interpretation of general relativity is developed in which the energy used to lift a body in a static gravitational field increases its rest mass. Observers at different gravitational potentials would experience different mass reference frames. It is shown that bodies falling in a Schwarzschild field exhibit the relativistic mass/energy relationship from special relativity. This new result is independent of the choice of coordinates. The proposed approach provides a physical explanation for gravitational energy, which is localized as a scalar function intrinsic to general relativity. Applyi…
We evaluate the quasinormal modes of massless Dirac perturbation in a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by the free static spherically symmetric quintessence by using the third-order WKB approximation. The result shows that due to the presence of quintessence, the massless field damps more slowly. The real part of the quasinormal modes increases and the the absolute value of the imaginary part increases when the state parameter $w_q$ increases. In other words, the massless Dirac field decays more rapidly for the larger $w_q$. And the peak value of potential barrier gets higher as $|k|$ incre…
We present the geodesical completion of the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions which covers the entire space in (u,v) Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates, including the spacetime behind the black and white hole singularities. The gravitational constant switches sign abruptly at the singularity, thus we interpret the other side of the singularity as a region of antigravity. The presence of such sign flips is a prediction of local (Weyl) scale invariant geodesically complete spacetimes which improve classical general relativity and string theory. We compute the geodesics for our new black hole…
The Schwarzschild space is one of the best studied spacetimes and its exhaustive considerations are easily accessible. Nevertheless, by some reasons it is still surrounded by a lot of misconceptions, myths, and "paradoxes". In this pedagogical paper an attempt is made to give a simple (i. e., without cumbersome calculations), but rigorous consideration to the relevant questions. I argue that 1) an observer falling into a Schwarzschild black hole will \emph{not} see "the entire history of the universe" 2) he will \emph{not} cross the horizon at the speed of light 3) when inside the hole, he wil…
We consider the perturbations of the massive vector field around Schwarzschild black hole, (generally, with non-vanishing $Λ$ - term). The monopole massive vector perturbation equations can be reduced to a single wave-like equation. We have proved the stability against these perturbations and investigated the quasinormal spectrum. The quasinormal behaviour for Schwarzschild black hole is quite unexpected: the fundamental mode and all higher overtones shows totally different dependence on the mass of the field $m$: as $m$ is increasing, the damping rate of the fundamental mode is decreasing, wh…
Using the third-order WKB approximation and monodromy methods, we investigate the influence of Lorentz violating coefficient $b$ (associated with a special axial-vector $b_μ$ field) on Dirac quasinormal modes in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. At fundamental overtone, the real part decreases linearly as the parameter $b$ increases. But the variation of the imaginary part with $b$ becomes more complex. For the larger multiple moment $k$, the magnitude of imaginary part increases with the increase of $b$, which means that presence of Lorentz violation makes Dirac field damps more rapidly…
We present the quasinormal frequencies of the massive scalar field in the background of a Schwarzchild black hole surrounded by quintessence with the third-order WKB method. The mass of the scalar field $u$ plays an important role in studying the quasinormal frequencies, the real part of the frequencies increases linearly as mass $u$ increases, while the imaginary part in absolute value decreases linearly which leads to damping more slowly and the frequencies having a limited value. Moreover, owing to the presence of the quintessence, the massive scalar field damps more slowly.
In this paper, we study the existence of (quasi)bound states in two spacetime geometries describing Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. For obtaining this type of states we search for discrete quantum modes of the massive Dirac equation in the two geometries. After imposing the quantization condition, an analytical expression for the energy of the ground states is derived. The energy of higher states is then obtained numerically. For very small values of the black hole mass $M$ we compare the energy of the Reissner-Nordström black hole quasibound state with the Dirac-Coulomb ener…
Black hole thermodynamic stability can be determined by studying the nature of heat capacity of the system. For Schwarzschild black hole the heat capacity is negative, but in the quintessence field this system shows a second order phase transition, implying the existence of a stable phase. We further discuss the equation of state of the present system. While analyzing the quasinormal modes, we find that the massive scalar quasinormal mode frequencies in the complex $ω$ plane shows a dramatic change when we plot it as a progressive function of quintessence state parameter. We also find the Hawk…
We investigate an important question of Hawking-like radiation as seen by an infalling observer during gravitational collapse. Using the functional Schrodinger formalism we are able to probe the time dependent regime which is out of the reach of the standard approximations like the Bogolyubov method. We calculate the occupation number of particles whose frequencies are measured in the proper time of an infalling observer in two crucially different space-time foliations: Schwarzschild and Eddington-Finkelstein. We demonstrate that the distribution in Schwarzschild reference frame is not quite t…
A quantum scalar field in anti de Sitter space is considered in two coordinate systems: static and FRW-like ones. It is shown that quantum vacua corresponding to each of these coordinatizations are not unitary equivalent. A choice of a physical ground state between these vacua is discussed under different setups.
The Landau-Lifshitz decomposition of spacetime, or (1+3)-split, determines the three-dimensional velocity and acceleration as measured by static observers. We use these quantities to analyze the geodesic particles in Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. We show that in both cases there is no room for a positive acceleration (repulsion). We also compute the escape and terminal speeds. The escape speed in the case of a static black hole coincides with the Newton result. For the Kerr spacetime, the escape speed depends on the polar angle, showing that a particle needs less energy to escape in the d…
We calculate the gravitational energy spectrum of the perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole described by quasinormal modes, in the framework of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). We obtain a general formula for the gravitational energy enclosed by a large surface of constant radius $r$, in the region $m\,<<\,r\,<<\infty$, where $m$ is the mass of the black hole. Considering the usual asymptotic expression for the perturbed metric components, we arrive at finite values for the energy spectrum. The perturbed energy depends on the two integers $n$ and $l$ that describ…
If the Schwarzschild black-hole is moving rectilinearly with uniform 3-velocity and suddenly stops, according to a distant observer, then we demonstrate that this observer will see a spherical light--like shell or "relativistic fireball" radiate outwards with energy equal to the original kinetic energy of the black-hole.
