The Schwarzschild space is one of the best studied spacetimes and its exhaustive considerations are easily accessible. Nevertheless, by some reasons it is still surrounded by a lot of misconceptions, myths, and "paradoxes". In this pedagogical paper an attempt is made to give a simple (i. e., without cumbersome calculations), but rigorous consideration to the relevant questions. I argue that 1) an observer falling into a Schwarzschild black hole will \emph{not} see "the entire history of the universe" 2) he will \emph{not} cross the horizon at the speed of light 3) when inside the hole, he will \emph{not} see the (future) singularity and 4) the latter is \emph{not} "central".
We globally embed (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in massive gravity into (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetimes. Making use of embedding coordinates, we directly obtain the generalized Hawking, Unruh and freely falling temperatures in a Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black hole due to massive graviton effects.
First sketch of black hole from M87 galaxy was obtained by Event Horizon Telescope, recently. As appearance of black hole shadow reflects space-time geometry of black holes, observations of black hole shadow may be a promising way to test general relativity in strong field regime. In this paper, we focus on angular radius of spherical black hole shadow with respect to freely falling observers. In the framework of general relativity, aberration formulation and angular radius-gravitational redshift relation are presented. For the sake of intuitive, we consider parametrized Schwarzschild black ho…
We show that the field equations of the Schwarzschild geometry are invariant under passive Lorentz transformations to a freely falling system. We decompose the field equations with respect to the accelerated system and find that the force of gravity is not transformed away but dynamically compensated.
A simple model for an evaporating non-rotating black hole is considered, employing a global time that does not become singular at the putative horizon. The dynamics of a test particle falling radially towards the center of the black hole is then investigated. Contrary to a previous approach, we find that the particle may pass the Schwarzschild radius before the black hole has gone. Backreaction effects of Hawking radiation on the space-time metric are not considered, rather a purely kinematical point of view is taken here. The importance of choosing an appropriate time coordinate when describi…
We developed realistic fully general relativistic computer code for simulation of optical projection in a strong, spherically symmetric gravitational field. Standard theoretical analysis of optical projection for an observer in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole is extended to black hole spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant, i.e, Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. Influence of the cosmological constant is investigated for static observers and observers radially free-falling from static radius. Simulation includes effects of gravitational lensing, multiple images, Doppler …
Studying particle motion in the gravitational field of a black hole from the perspective of different observers is important for separating the coordinate artifacts from the physical phenomena. In this paper, we show that a freely falling test particle exhibits gravitational repulsion by a black hole as seen by an asymptotic observer, whereas nothing of the kind happens as recorded by a freely falling observer or by an observer located at a finite distance from the event horizon. This analysis is carried out for a general Reissner-Nordström, an extremal Reissner-Nordström, and a Schwarzschild …
In this paper we discuss the Casimir effect in a small cavity, freely falling from spatial infinity in spacetime geometry outside of a Schwarzschild black hole. Our main goal is to search for possible changes in the vacuum energy, as well as particle creation inside the falling cavity, with respect to a comoving observer. Working in the Lemaître chart and assuming a cavity size $L$ much smaller than the Schwarzschild radius ($L/r_g\ll 1$), we solve the Klein-Gordon equation for a massless scalar field confined within the cavity in the reference frame of the comoving observer. We follow Schwing…
We examine various methods of constructing conserved quantities in the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR). We demonstrate that in the covariant formulation the preferred method are the Noether charges that are true invariant quantities. The Noether charges depend on the vector field $ξ$ and we consider two different options where $ξ$ is chosen as either a Killing vector or a four-velocity of the observer. We discuss the physical meaning of each choice on the example of the Schwarzschild solution in different frames: static, freely falling Lemaitre frame, and a newly obtained …
We investigate a foliation of Schwarzschild spacetime determined by observers freely falling in the radial direction. This is described using a generalisation of Gullstrand-Painlevé coordinates which allows for any possible radial velocity. This foliation provides a contrast with the usual static foliation implied by Schwarzschild coordinates. The $3$-dimensional spaces are distinct for the static and falling observers, so the embedding diagrams, spatial measurement, simultaneity, and time at infinity are also distinct, though the $4$-dimensional spacetime is unchanged. Our motivation is conce…
Quantum theory and relativity offer different conceptions of time. To explore the conflict between them, we study a quantum version of the light-clock commonly used to illustrate relativistic time dilation. This semiclassical model combines elements of both theories. We show for Gaussian states of the light field that the clock time is independent of the initial state. We calculate the discrepancy between two such clocks when one is held in a gravitational field and the other is left to fall a certain distance. Contrasting our results with the case of pointlike observers in general relativity,…
We investigate tidal effects produced in the spacetime of Schwarzschild black hole in holographic massive gravity, which has two additional mass parameters due to massive gravitons. As a result, we have obtained that massive gravitons affect the angular component of the tidal force, while the radial component has the same form with the one in massless gravity. On the other hand, by solving the geodesic deviation equations, we have found that radial components of two nearby geodesics keep tightening while falling into the black hole and after passing the event horizons get abruptly infinitely s…
Making use of the higher dimensional global embedding Minkowski spacetime (GEMS), we embed (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes written by the Painlevé-Gullstrand (PG) spacetimes, which have off-diagonal components in metrics, into (5+1)- and (5+2)-dimensional flat ones, respectively. As a result, we have shown the equivalence of the GEMS embeddings of the spacetimes with the diagonal and off-diagonal terms in metrics. Moreover, with the aid of their geodesic equations satisfying various boundary conditions in the flat embedded spacetimes, we directly obtain …
We present a quantum optics treatment of the near horizon behaviour of a quantum oscillator freely-falling into a pre-existing Schwarzschild black hole. We use Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates to define a global vacuum state. In contrast to an accelerated oscillator in the Minkowski vacuum, where there is no radiation beyond an initial transient, we find that the oscillator radiates positive energy to to infinity and negative energy into the black hole as it attempts to come into equilibrium with the ambient vacuum. We discuss the relationship of the model to Hawking radiation.
By using complex angular momentum techniques, we study the electromagnetic radiation generated by a charged particle falling radially from infinity into a Schwarzschild black hole. We consider both the case of a particle initially at rest and that of a particle projected with a relativistic velocity and we construct complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the partial wave expansions defining the Maxwell scalar $ϕ_2$ and the energy spectrum $dE/dω$ observed at spatial infinity. We show, in particular, that Regge pole approximations involving only one Regge pole…
We compute spectra, waveforms, angular distribution and total gravitational energy of the gravitiational radiation emitted during the radial infall of a massless particle into a Schwarzschild black hole. Our fully relativistic approach shows that (i) less than 50% of the total energy radiated to infinity is carried by quadrupole waves, (ii) the spectra is flat, and (iii) the zero frequency limit agrees extremely well with a prediction by Smarr. This process may be looked at as the limiting case of collisions between massive particles traveling at nearly the speed of light, by identifying the e…
Scalar field vacuum energy and particle creation in a 3D Casimir apparatus, freely falling in the Schwarzschild spacetime, are considered in the reference frame of a comoving observer. Following Schwinger's proper time approach, Casimir energy is evaluated from the effective action, resulting in a small correction to the flat spacetime case. Besides, a tiny amount of quanta excited out from the vacuum is found. Both effects are discussed, drawing attention to the role of the underlying spacetime dimensionality.
We obtain a (5+1)-dimensional global flat embedding of modified Schwarzschild black hole in rainbow gravity. We show that local free-fall temperature in rainbow gravity, which depends on different energy $ω$ of a test particle, is finite at the event horizon for a freely falling observer, while local temperature is divergent at the event horizon for a fiducial observer. Moreover, these temperatures in rainbow gravity satisfy similar relations to those of the Schwarzschild black hole except overall factor $g(ω)$, which plays a key role of rainbow functions in this embedding approach.
As it is well known, the $0-0$ component of the Schwarzschild space can be obtained by the requirement that the geodesic of slowly moving particles match the Newtonian equation. Given this result, we show here that the remaining components can be obtained by requiring that the inside of a Newtonian ball of dust matched at a free falling radius with the external space determines that space to be Schwarzschild, if no pathologies exist. Also we are able to determine that the constant of integration that appears in the Newtonian Cosmology coincides with the spacial curvature of the FLRW metric.
We investigate the electromagnetic radiation released during the high energy collision of a charged point particle with a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. We show that the spectra is flat, and well described by a classical calculation. We also compare the total electromagnetic and gravitational energies emitted, and find that the former is supressed in relation to the latter for very high energies. These results could apply to the astrophysical world in the case charged stars and small charged black holes are out there colliding into large black holes, and to a very high energy colli…
The well-known Schwarzschild black hole was first obtained as a stationary, spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein's vacuum field equations. But until thirty years later, efforts were made for the analytic extension from the exterior area $(r>2GM)$ to the interior one $(r<2GM)$. As a contrast to its maximally extension in the Kruskal coordinates, we provide a comoving coordinate system from the view of the observers freely falling into the black hole in the radial direction. We find an interesting fact that the spatial part in this coordinate system is maximally symmetric $(E_3)$, i.e.…
The observer dependence of the quasi-local energy (QLE) and momentum in the Schwarzschild geometry is illustrated. Using the Brown-York prescription, the QLE for families of non-geodesic and geodesic observers penetrating the event horizon is obtained. An explicit shell-building process is presented and the binding energy is computed in terms of the QLE measured by a static observer field at a radius outside the horizon radius. The QLE for a radially geodesic observer field freely-falling from infinity is shown to vanish. Finally, a simple relation for the dynamics of the quasi-local momentum …
We compute the gravitational self-force (or ``radiation reaction'' force) acting on a particle falling radially into a Schwarzschild black hole. Our calculation is based on the ``mode-sum'' method, in which one first calculates the individual $\ell$-multipole contributions to the self-force (by numerically integrating the decoupled perturbation equations) and then regularizes the sum over modes by applying a certain analytic procedure. We demonstrate the equivalence of this method with the $ζ-$function scheme. The convergence rate of the mode-sum series is considerably improved here (thus nota…
The 3+1 formalism of Thorne, Price and Macdonald has been used to derive the linear two-fluid equations describing transverse and longitudinal waves propagating in the two-fluid ideal collisionless plasmas surrounding a Schwarzschild black hole. The plasma is assumed to be falling in radial direction toward the event horizon. The relativistic two-fluid equations have been reformulate, in analogy with the special relativistic formulation as explained in an earlier paper, to take account of relativistic effects due to the event horizon. Here a WKB approximation is used to derive the local disper…
The characteristic features were found in the electromagnetic spectrum of radiation from free falling dipole, when it is fall radially into a Schwarzschild black hole. These features can be used as another method for the black hole mass determinating. Also, these features can be used for the determination some characteristics of the magnetosphere or the accretion disk around the black hole.
A "temporal analogue" of the standard Poynting-Robertson effect is analyzed as induced by a dust of particles (instead of a gas of photons) surrounding a Schwarzschild black hole. Test particles inside this cloud undergo acceleration effects due to the presence of a friction force, so that the fate of their evolution can be completely different from the corresponding geodesic motion. Typical situations are discussed of hyperbolic motion of particles scattered by the black hole in the presence of a dust filling the whole spacetime region outside the horizon as well as particles which free fall …
The case of asymptotic Minkowskian space-times is considered. A special class of asymptotic rectilinear coordinates at the spatial infinity, related to a specific system of free falling observers, is chosen. This choice is applied in particular to the Schwarzschild metric, obtaining a vanishing energy for this space-time. This result is compared with the result of some known theorems on the uniqueness of the energy of any asymptotic Minkowskian space, showing that there is no contradiction between both results, the differences becoming from the use of coordinates with different operational mea…
The electromagnetic bremsstrahlung spectrum for the dipole which falling by a spiral orbit into the Schwarzschild black hole was found. The characteristic features in this electromagnetic spectrum can be used for determine of the black hole mass by the new way. This new way (if implemented) provides higher accuracy in determining of the black hole mass. Also these features in the spectrum can be used for determine of the certain characteristics in the black hole magnetosphere or in the accretion disk characteristics around the black hole. It is also shown that the asymptotic behavior of this s…
The extreme Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time is a spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's equations with a cosmological constant Lambda and mass parameter m>0 which is characterized by the condition that 9 Lambda m^2=1. The global structure of this space-time is here analyzed in detail. Conformal and embedding diagrams are constructed, and synchronous coordinates which are suitable for a discussion of the cosmic no-hair conjecture are presented. The permitted geodesic motions are also analyzed. By a careful investigation of the geodesics and the equations of geodesic deviation, it is sh…
We use the global embedding Minkowski space (GEMS) geometries of a (3+1)-dimensional curved Reissner-Nordström(RN)-AdS black hole spacetime into a (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetime to define a proper local temperature, which remains finite at the event horizon, for freely falling observers outside a static black hole. Our extended results include the known limiting cases of the RN, Schwarzschild--AdS, and Schwarzschild black holes.
As is well known, the 0 - 0 component of the Schwarzschild space can be obtained by the requirement that the geodesic of slowly moving particles match the Newtonian equation. Given this result, we show here that the remaining components can be obtained by requiring that the inside of a Newtonian ball of dust matched at a free falling radius with the external space determines that space to be Schwarzschild, if no pathologies exist. The Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates are extended to describe the black hole in the cosmological environment: the Schwarzschild-de-Sitter black hole, which has two horizons. The extension is made using the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism. In this extension, which describes the metric in the whole range of radial coordinates $0<r < \infty$, there is the point $r=r_0$ at which the shift function (velocity) changes sign. At this point the observer is at rest, while the observers at $r<r_0$ are free falling to the black hole and the observers at $r>r_0$ are free falling towards the cosmological hor…
We examine the Schwarzschild interior of a black hole, incorporating quantum gravitational modifications due to loop quantum gravity. We consider an improved loop quantization using techniques that have proven successful in loop quantum cosmology. The central Schwarzschild singularity is resolved and the implications for the fate of an in-falling test particle in the interior region is discussed. The singularity is replaced by a Nariai type Universe. We discuss the resulting conformal diagram, providing a clear geometrical interpretation of the quantum effects.
The singularity of a spherical (Schwarzschild) black hole is a surface, not a point. A freely-falling, non-rotating observer sees Hawking radiation with energy density diverging with radius as $ρ\propto r^{-6}$ near the Schwarzschild singular surface. Spacetime inside a rotating (Kerr) black hole terminates at the inner horizon because of the Poisson-Israel mass inflation instability. If the black hole is accreting, as all realistic black holes do, then generically inflation gives way to Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz oscillatory collapse to a strong, spacelike singular surface.
We calculate the self force acting on a scalar particle which is falling radially into a Schwarzschild black hole. We treat the particle's self-field as a linear perturbation over the fixed Schwarzschild background. The force is calculated by numerically solving the appropriate wave equation for each mode of the field in the time domain, calculating its contribution to the self force, and summing over all modes using Ori's mode-sum regularization prescription. The radial component of the force is attractive at large distances, and becomes repulsive as the particle approaches the event horizon.
We analyze the tidal forces produced in the spacetime of Reissner-Nordström black holes. We point out that the radial component of the tidal force changes sign just outside the event horizon if the charge-to-mass ratio is close to $1$ unlike in Schwarzschild spacetime of uncharged black holes, and that the angular component changes sign between the outer and inner horizons. We solve the geodesic deviation equations for radially falling bodies towards the charged black hole. We find, for example, that the radial component of the geodesic deviation vector starts decreasing inside the event horiz…
In this work, we have investigated the phenomenon of acceleration radiation exhibited by an atom falling into a quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole. We observe that the excitation-probability of the atom with simultaneous emission of a photon satisfies the equivalence principle when we compare it to the excitation probability of a mirror accelerating with respect to an atom. We also demonstrate the validity of the equivalence principle for a generic black hole geometry. Then we calculate the horizon brightened acceleration radiation (HBAR) entropy for this quantum corrected black hole g…
We demonstrate within the quantum field theoretical framework that an asymptotic particle falling into the black hole implants soft graviton hair on the horizon, conforming with the classical proposal of Hawking, Perry and Strominger. A key ingredient to this result is the construction of gravitational Wilson line dressings of an infalling scalar field, carrying a definite horizon supertranslation charge. It is shown that a typical Schwarzschild state is degenerate, and can be labeled by different soft supertranslation hairs parametrized for radial trajectories by the mass and energy of the in…
The computation of the gravitational radiation emitted by a particle falling into a Schwarzschild black hole is a classic problem studied already in the 1970s. Here we present a detailed numerical analysis of the case of radial infall starting at infinity with no initial velocity. We compute the radiated waveforms, spectra and energies for multipoles up to l = 6, improving significantly on the numerical accuracy of existing results. This is done by integrating the Zerilli equation in the frequency domain using the Green's function method. The resulting wave exhibits a "ring-down" phase whose d…
We find all the classical solutions (minimal surfaces) of open or closed strings in {\it any} two dimensional curved spacetime. As examples we consider the SL(2,R)/R two dimensional black hole, and any 4D black hole in the Schwarzschild family, provided the motion is restricted to the time-radial components. The solutions, which describe longitudinaly oscillating folded strings (radial oscillations in 4D), must be given in lattice-like patches of the worldsheet, and a transfer operation analogous to a transfer matrix determines the future evolution. Then the swallowing of a string by a black h…
We carry out the first investigation of the entanglement and mutual information harvesting protocols for detectors freely falling into a black hole. Working in $(1+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole spacetime, we consider two pointlike Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detectors in different combinations of free-falling and static trajectories. Employing a generalization of relative velocity suitable for curved spacetimes, we find that the amount of correlations extracted from the black hole vacuum, at least outside the near-horizon regime, is largely kinematic in origin (i.e. it is mostly due to the r…
We examine energy conversion from accreting pair plasma to outgoing Poynting flux by black hole rotation. Our approach is based on a two-fluid model consisting of collisionless pair plasma. The electric potential is not constant along magnetic field lines, unlike an ideal magnetohydrodynamics approximation. We show how and where longitudinal electric fields and toroidal magnetic fields are generated by the rotation, whereas they vanish everywhere for radial flow in a split monopole magnetic field in a Schwarzschild black hole. Outgoing electromagnetic power in a steady state is calculated by a…
The Karlhede invariant is formed from the contraction of the covariant derivative of the Riemann tensor. It is a coordinate invariant that vanishes at the Schwarzschild event horizon $r=2m$. The vanishing of the invariant allows an observer to construct a local measuring device and use it to detect an event horizon while falling into a black hole. Recent proposals postulate the existence of a "firewall" at the event horizon that may incinerate an infalling observer. These proposals face an apparent paradox if a freely falling observer detects nothing special in the vicinity of the horizon. The…
As is well known, some aspects of General Relativity and Cosmology can be reproduced without even using Einstein's equation. As an illustration, the 0 - 0 component of the Schwarzschild space can be obtained by the requirement that the geodesic of slowly mov- ing particles match the Newtonian equation. Given this result, we shall show here that the remaining component (grr) can be obtained by requiring that the inside of a Newtonian ball of dust matched at a free falling radius with the external space of unspecified type. This matching determines the external space to be of Schwarzschild type.…
In the four-dimensional background of Schwarzschild black hole, we investigate the energy densities and fluxes in the freely falling frames for the Boulware, Unruh, and Israel-Hartle-Hawking states. In particular, we study their behaviors near the horizon and asymptotic spatial infinity by using the trace anomaly of a conformally invariant scalar field. In the Boulware state, both the energy density and flux are negative divergent when the observer is dropped at the horizon, and asymptotically vanish. In the Unruh state, the energy density is also negative divergent at the horizon while it is …
The case for the utility of Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates in classroom made by Augousti et al. in this journal (Eur. J. Phys. 33:1--11, 2012) is strengthened by extending their discussion beyond the event horizon of the black hole. Observations made by two adventurers following one another into a Schwarzschild black hole are examined in terms of these nonsingular coordinates. Two scenarios are considered, the first corresponding to one observer following the other closely, the second to a significant distance between the two of them, precluding the existence of a common inertial system. In part…
In this paper we show that with standard methods it is possible to obtain highly precise results for QNMs. In particular, secondary modes are obtained by numerical integration. We compare several results making a detailed analysis.
Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is probed through particle geodesics. Gravitational force of KS black hole becomes weaker than that of Schwarzschild around horizon and interior space. Particles can be always scattered or trapped in new closed orbits, unlike those falling forever in Schwarzschild black. The properties of null and timelike geodesics are classified with values of coupling constants. The precession rates of the orbits are evaluated. The time trajectories are also classified under different values of coupling constants for both null and timelike geodesics. Ph…
We examine Poynting flux generation due to pair plasma accreting onto a slowly rotating black hole. In particular, we consider the possibility of an outgoing flux at the horizon. Our approach is based on a two-fluid model representing a collisionless pair plasma. In the background, the plasma inflow is neutral and radial along the magnetic field lines of a split monopole in a Schwarzschild spacetime. A combined mechanism of dragging by the black hole's spin and the Lorentz force produces charge separation and current flow, and hence electric and toroidal magnetic fields. By WKB analysis, two c…
We consider general radially moving frames realized in the background of nonextremal black holes having causal structure similar to that of the Schwarzschild metric. In doing so, we generalize the Lema\^ıtre approach, constructing free-falling frames which are built from the reference particles with an arbitrary specific energy $e_{0}$ including $e_{0}<0$ and a special case $e_{0}=0$. The general formula of 3-velocity of a freely falling particle with the specific energy $e$ with respect to a frame with $% e_{0}$ is presented. We point out the relation between the properties of considered fram…
We study the spacetime noncommutative effect on black hole as particle accelerators and, find that particle falling from infinity with zero velocity cannot collide with unbound energy when the noncommutative Kerr black hole is exactly extremal. Our results also show that the bigger of the spinning black hole's mass is, the higher of center of mass energy that the particles obtain. For small and medium noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole, the collision energy depends on the black holes' mass.
