In this paper we construct the Fermi coordinates along any arbitrary line in simple analytical way without use the orthogonal frames and their parallel transport. In this manner we extend the Eddington approach to the construction of the Fermi metric in terms of the Riemann tensor. In the second part of the present article we show how the proposed approach works practically by applying it for deriving the Fermi coordinates for the static observer in the Schwarzschild spacetime.
The observer dependence of the quasi-local energy (QLE) and momentum in the Schwarzschild geometry is illustrated. Using the Brown-York prescription, the QLE for families of non-geodesic and geodesic observers penetrating the event horizon is obtained. An explicit shell-building process is presented and the binding energy is computed in terms of the QLE measured by a static observer field at a radius outside the horizon radius. The QLE for a radially geodesic observer field freely-falling from infinity is shown to vanish. Finally, a simple relation for the dynamics of the quasi-local momentum …
It is well known that observers will be accelerated when they approach the planets. Thus, discussing the properties of accelerating observers in the Schwarzschild space is of sense. For the sake of simplicity, we can construct these observers' world lines by comparing with the observers in the Hawking effect and Unruh effect, whose world lines are both hyperbolic curves in the appropriate coordinates. We do it after defining a certain special null hypersurface in the Kruskal coordinates. Our result shows that these accelerating observers defined in our paper can also detect the radiation with …
The aim of this Letter is rather pedagogical. We considered the static spherically symmetric ensemble of observers, having finite bare mass and trying to measure geometrical and physical properties of the environmental static (Schwarzschild) space-time. It is shown that, using the photon rockets (which the mass together with the mass of their fuel is also taken into account) they can managed to keep themselves on the fixed value of radius. The process of diminishing the total bare mass up to zero lasts infinitely long time. It is important that the problem is solved self-consistently, i.e., wi…
We developed realistic fully general relativistic computer code for simulation of optical projection in a strong, spherically symmetric gravitational field. Standard theoretical analysis of optical projection for an observer in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole is extended to black hole spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant, i.e, Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. Influence of the cosmological constant is investigated for static observers and observers radially free-falling from static radius. Simulation includes effects of gravitational lensing, multiple images, Doppler …
Studying particle motion in the gravitational field of a black hole from the perspective of different observers is important for separating the coordinate artifacts from the physical phenomena. In this paper, we show that a freely falling test particle exhibits gravitational repulsion by a black hole as seen by an asymptotic observer, whereas nothing of the kind happens as recorded by a freely falling observer or by an observer located at a finite distance from the event horizon. This analysis is carried out for a general Reissner-Nordström, an extremal Reissner-Nordström, and a Schwarzschild …
We derive exact expressions for the relativistic redshift between an Earth-bound observer, that is meant to model a standard clock on the Earth's surface, and various (geodesic) observers in the Schwarzschild spacetime. We assume that the observers exchange radial light signals to compare the frequencies of standard clocks, which they transport along their respective worldlines. We calculate the redshift between an Earth-bound clock and static observers, observers in radial free fall, on circular geodesics, and on arbitrary bound quasi-elliptical orbits. For the latter case, we consider as exa…
In a recent paper we investigated stationary, relativistic Bondi-type accretion in Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. Here we study their stability, using the method developed by Moncrief. The analysis applies to perturbations satisfying the potential flow condition. We prove that global isothermal flows in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetimes are stable, assuming the test-fluid approximation. Isothermal flows in Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometries and polytropic flows in Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetimes can be stable, under suitable boundary condit…
The photon vacuum polarization effect in curved spacetime leads to birefringence, i.e. the photon velocity becomes greater than (or less than) the speed of light depending on its polarization. We investigate this phenomenon in a Schwarzschild curved spacetime.
The conformal structure of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime is analysed using the extended conformal Einstein field equations. To this end, initial data for an asymptotic initial value problem for the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime is obtained. This initial data allows to understand the singular behaviour of the conformal structure at the asymptotic points where the horizons of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime meet the conformal boundary. Using the insights gained from the analysis of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime in a conformal Gaussian gauge, we consider nonlinear pertur…
We analyze the scalar radiation emitted by a source in geodesic circular orbits around a Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. We obtain the emitted power using quantum field theory in curved spacetimes framework at tree level. We compare our results with the scalar synchrotron radiation in Schwarzschild spacetime.
Within the general class of Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes that are asymptotic to the A-de-S Schwarzschild metric, we give a simple positive mass theorem based on arguments from causal structure. A general result for all asymptotically A-de-S spacetimes will be given elsewhere.
Among the coordinates used to construct a conformal compactification of the Schwarzschild spacetime, none of them simultaneously extend smoothly both through an event horizon and beyond null infinity. To construct such coordinates, instead of starting with the Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates we assume direct analytic transformation between Schwarzschild and compactified coordinates and determine their behavior on the event horizon and at null infinity. We then propose an example of such coordinates and illustrate the way they cover the conformally extended Schwarzschild spacetime as well as their …
Approximative analytic solutions of the Dirac equation in the geometry of Schwarzschild black holes are derived obtaining information about the discrete energy levels and the asymptotic behavior of the energy eigenspinors.
We study the thermodynamic properties of high dimensional Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes with the consideration of quantum effects. It is shown that by considering the cosmological constant as a variable state parameter and adding an extra term which denotes the vacuum energy, both the differential and integral mass formulas of the first law of Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes can be directly derived from the general Schwarzschild de Sitter metrics in a simple and natural way. Furthermore, after taking quantum effects into account, we can see that the cosmological constant must decrease …
We explore the connections between various coordinate systems associated with observers moving inwardly along radial geodesics in the Schwarzschild geometry. Painlevé-Gullstrand (PG) time is adapted to freely falling observers dropped from rest from infinity; Lake-Martel-Poisson (LMP) time coordinates are adapted to observers who start at infinity with non-zero initial inward velocity; Gautreau-Hoffmann (GH) time coordinates are adapted to observers dropped from rest from a finite distance from the black hole horizon. We construct from these an LMP family and a proper-time family of time coord…
By considering particles as smeared objects, we investigate the effects of space noncommutativity on the orbits of particles in Schwarzschild spacetime. The effects of space noncommutativity on the value of the precession of the perihelion of particle orbit and deflection of light ray in Schwarzschild geometry are calculated and the stability of circular orbits is discussed.
One perceives same response of a single-atom detector when placed at a point outside the horizon in Schwarzschild spacetime to that of a static single-atom detector in thermal Minkowski spacetime. So one cannot distinguish Schwarzschild spacetime from thermal Minkowski spacetime by using a single-atom detector. We show that, for Schwarzschild spacetime, beyond a characteristic length scale which is proportional to the inverse of the surface gravity $κ$, the \emph{Resonance Casimir-Polder interaction (RCPI)} between two entangled atoms is characterized by a $1/L^2$ power-law provided the atoms …
It is shown that if an asymptotically flat spacetime is asymptotically stationary, in the sense that $\Lie_ξ g_{ab}$ vanishes at the rate $\sim t^{-3}$ for asymptotically timelike vector field $ξ^a$, and the energy-momentum tensor vanishes at the rate $\sim t^{-4}$, then the spacetime is an asymptotically Schwarzschild spacetime. This gives a new aspect of the uniqueness theorem of a black hole.
We introduce in the explicit form the tetrads of arbitrary observers in spacetimes with spherical and axial symmetries. The observers confined to the equatorial plane are parametrized by the pair of functions. We apply this description in the analysis of the null-geodesics in the observers' frames. The observers with the constant acceleration are distinguished.
We study the behavior of nonzero rest mass spinning test particles moving along circular orbits in the Schwarzschild spacetime in the case in which the components of the spin tensor are allowed to vary along the orbit, generalizing some previous work.
We investigate the motion of extended test objects in the Schwarzschild spacetime, particularly the radial fall of two point masses connected by a massless rod of a length given as a fixed, periodic function of time. We argue that such a model is inappropriate in the most interesting regimes of high and low oscillation frequencies.
With the post-Newtonian approxination, the energy of Schwarzschild spacetime in the Weinberg prescription is obtained. The energy for the first post-Newtonian approximation $E^{(1)} = m$ gives the Newtonian treatment of Schwarzschild spacetime. However, for the second post-Newtonian approximation, the erergy is shown that $E^{(1)}$ adds extra terms $E^{(2)}$ which consist of the energy stored in the configuration $E_{\rm config}$, in the gravitational field $E_{\rm field}$. and a term of surface integral. These extra terms gives post-Newtonian corrections to the Newtonian treatment.
Fermi coordinates are constructed as exact functions of the Schwar\-zschild coordinates around the world line of a static observer in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild spacetime modulo a single impact parameter determined implicitly as a function of the latter coordinates. This illustrates the difficulty of constructing explicit exact Fermi coordinates even along simple world lines in highly symmetric spacetimes.
We demonstrate that in the case of Schwarzschild spacetime the Doppler shift is partially factorized into terms representing relativistic, kinematical and the gravitational contributions. The condition for the complete factorization is derived. Application of these results to the simplest cases and possible implementation in the framework of GPS is briefly discussed.
We consider a spacetime foam model of the Schwarzschild horizon, where the horizon consists of Planck size black holes. According to our model the entropy of the Schwarzschild black hole is proportional to the area of its event horizon. It is possible to express geometrical arguments to the effect that the constant of proportionality is, in natural units, equal to one quarter.
We address the concerns raised by the author of "Comment: Some exact quasinormal frequencies of a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime" appeared in arXiv:1807.05940. In particular, we explain why the analysis in our paper [Phys. Rev. D{\bf{98}}, 024017 (2018)] is relevant and correct.
The renormalized expectation value of the stress energy tensor of the conformally invariant massless fields in the Unruh state in the Schwarzschild spacetime is constructed. It is achieved through solving the conservation equation in conformal space and utilizing the regularity conditions in the physical metric. The relations of obtained results to the existing approximations are analysed.
We introduce a calculation, based on purely topological reasoning, of the global equilibrium Hawking temperature of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, where a Schwarzschild black hole horizon coexists with a de Sitter cosmological horizon. Our method is based on the careful calculation of the Euler characteristic of the total system, showing that this quantity completely determines the thermodynamical features of the system. The method is universal and can be applied to any structure possessing multiple horizons in general relativity.
We find a new class of exact solutions of the five-dimensional Einstein equations whose corresponding four-dimensional spacetime possesses a Schwarzschild-like behavior. The electromagnetic potential depends on a harmonic function and can be choosen to be of a monopole, dipole, etc. field. The solutions are asymptotically flat and for vanishing magnetic field the four metrics are of the Schwarzschild solution. The spacetime is singular in $r=2m$ for higher multipole moments, but regular for monopoles or vanishing magnetic fields in this point. The scalar field posseses a singular behavior. #(P…
The approximate stress-energy tensor of the conformally invariant massless spin-1/2 field in the Hartle-Hawking state in the Schwarzschild spacetime is constructed. It is shown that by solving the conservation equation in conformal space and utilizing the regularity conditions in a physical metric one obtains the stress-energy tensor that is in a good agreement with the numerical calculations. The back reaction of the quantized field upon the spacetime metric is briefly discussed.
We study the set of trapped photons outside the event horizon of Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes in dimension $d\geq4$. We prove that the only trapped photons are those with constant Boyer-Lindquist coordinate radius. We then identify the set of trapped photons as a submanifold of the tangent bundle of the spacetime, and prove that this submanifold has topology $T^1 S^{n-1}\times \mathbb{R}^2$, as suggested in [7].
Matching Radial Geodesics in Two Schwarzschild Spacetimes (e.g. Black-to-White Hole Transition) or Schwarzschild and de Sitter Spacetimes (e.g. Interior of a Non-singular Black Hole)
The next-to-leading term of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the quantized massive field with an arbitrary curvature coupling in the spacetime of the Schwarzschild black hole is constructed. It is achieved by functional differentiation of the DeWitt-Schwinger effective action involving coincidence limit of the Hadamard-Minakshisundaram-DeWitt-Seely coefficients $a_{3}$ and $a_{4}.$ The back reaction of the quantized field upon the Schwarzschild black hole is briefly discussed.
In this paper, utilizing Møller's energy-momentum complex, we explicitly evaluate the energy and momentum density associated with a metric describing a four-dimensional, Schwarzschild-like, spacetime derived from an effective gravity coupled with a U(1) gauge field in the context of a D3-brane dynamics in the classical regime, i.e., between the asymptotic and the Planck regime.
The second Bianchi identity can be recast as an evolution equation for the Riemann curvatures. Here we will report on such a system for a vacuum static spherically symmetric spacetime. This is the first of two papers. In the following paper we will extend the ideas developed here to general vacuum spacetimes. In this paper we will demonstrate our ideas on a Schwarzschild spacetime and give detailed numerical results. For suitable choices of lapse function we find that the system gives excellent results with long term stability.
We calculate the orbits of a particle in Schwarzschild spacetime, assuming that the dynamics is governed by a Snyder symplectic structure. With this assumption, the perihelion shift of the planets acquires an additional contribution with respect to the one predicted by general relativity. Moreover, the equivalence principle is violated. If one assumes that Snyder mechanics is valid also for macroscopic systems, these results impose strong constraints on the value of the coupling parameter of the Snyder model.
We performed a careful numerical analysis of the late tail behaviour of waves propagating in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Specifically the scalar monopole, the electromagnetic dipole and the gravitational axial quadrupole waves have been investigated. The obtained results agree with a falloff $1/t^{2l+3}$ for the general initial data and $1/t^{2l+4}$ for the initially static data.
We expand upon our previous analysis of numerical moving-puncture simulations of the Schwarzschild spacetime. We present a derivation of the family of analytic stationary 1+log foliations of the Schwarzschild solution, and outline a transformation to isotropic-like coordinates. We discuss in detail the numerical evolution of standard Schwarzschild puncture data, and the new time-independent 1+log data. Finally, we demonstrate that the moving-puncture method can locate the appropriate stationary geometry in a robust manner when a numerical code alternates between two forms of 1+log slicing duri…

We consider the orbits of particles with spin in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Using the Papapetrou-Dixon equations of motion for spinning particles, we solve for the orbits and focus on those that exhibit chaos using both Poincaré maps and Lyapunov exponents. In particular, we develop a method for comparing the Lyapunov exponents of chaotic orbits. We find chaotic orbits for smaller spin values than previously thought and with spins that could be realized astrophysically.
It has been established in Schwarzschild spacetime (and more generally in Kerr spacetime) that pairs of geometrically different timelike geodesics with the same radial and azimuthal frequencies exist in the strong field regime. The occurrence of this socalled isofrequency pairing is of relevance in view of gravitational-wave observations. In this paper we generalize the results on isofrequency pairing in two directions. Firstly, we allow for a (positive) cosmological constant, i.e., we replace the Schwarzschild spacetime with the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. Secondly, we consider not onl…
We investigate gravitational radiation memory and its corresponding effect on the asymptotic symmetries of a body whose exterior is a boosted Schwarzschild spacetime. First, in the context of linearized theory, we consider such a Schwarzschild body which is initially at rest, then goes through a radiative stage and finally emerges as a boosted Schwarzschild body. We show that the proper retarded solution of the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime for this process can be described in terms of the ingoing Kerr-Schild form of the Schwarzschild metric for both the initial and final states. An outgoin…
A characterisation of initial data sets for the Schwarzschild spacetime is provided. This characterisation is obtained by performing a 3+1 decomposition of a certain invariant characterisation of the Schwarzschild spacetime given in terms of concomitants of the Weyl tensor. This procedure renders a set of necessary conditions --which can be written in terms of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor and their concomitants-- for an initial data set to be a Schwarzschild initial data set. Our approach also provides a formula for a static Killing initial data set candidate --a KID cand…
A new branch of quasinormal modes for a massless scalar field propagating on the Schwarzschild spacetime was recently announced [1807.04513]. We review the quasinormal modes characterisation and arguments and identify the flaws in their proof. Then, we preset explicit counterexamples to such arguments. Finally, we study the modes via alternative methods and do not find the new branch. We conclude against their interpretation.
It is shown how the gauge of the ``regular finite initial value problem at spacelike infinity'' can be used to construct a certain type of estimates for the Maxwell field propagating on a Schwarzschild background. These estimates are constructed with the objective of obtaining information about the smoothness near spacelike and null infinity of a wide class of solutions to the Maxwell equations.
In this research note we introduce a new approximation of photon geodesics in Schwarzschild spacetime which is especially useful to describe highly bent trajectories, for which the angle between the initial emission position and the line of sight to the observer approaches $π$: this corresponds to the points behind the central mass of the Schwarzschild metric with respect to the observer. The approximation maintains very good accuracy overall, with deviations from the exact numerical results below $1\%$ up to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) located at $6~GM/c^2$.
The influence of spin on a photon's motion in a Schwarzschild and FRW spacetimes is studied. The first order correction to the geodesic motion is found. It is shown that unlike the world-lines of spinless particles, the photons world-lines do not lie in a plane.
This article presents a streamlined version of the author's original proof of the $C^0$-inextendibility of the maximal analytic Schwarzschild spacetime. Firstly, we deviate from the original proof by using the result, recently established in collaboration with Galloway and Ling, that given a $C^0$-extension of a globally hyperbolic spacetime, one can find a timelike geodesic that leaves this spacetime. This result much simplifies the proof of the inextendibility through the exterior region of the Schwarzschild spacetime. Secondly, we give a more flexible and shorter argument for the inextendib…
We study the kinematic relative velocity of general test particles with respect to stationary observers (using spherical coordinates) in Schwarzschild spacetime, obtaining that its modulus does not depend on the observer, unlike Fermi, spectroscopic and astrometric relative velocities. We study some fundamental particular cases, generalizing some results given in other work about stationary and radial free-falling test particles. Moreover, we give a new result about test particles with circular geodesic orbits: the modulus of their kinematic relative velocity with respect to any stationary obs…
We derive a transformation of the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild solution into new coordinates such that the apparent unphysical singularities of the metric are removed. Moreover, we give the maximal singularity-free atlas for the manifold with the metric under consideration. This atlas reveals many new features e.g. it turns out to describe an infinite lattice of asymptotically flat universes connected by black hole tunnels.
We propose a new framework of quantum field theory for an arbitrary observer in curved spacetime, defined in the spacetime region in which each point can both receive a signal from and send a signal to the observer. Multiple motivations for this proposal are discussed. We argue that radar time should be applied to slice the observer's spacetime region into his simultaneity surfaces. In the case where each such surface is a Cauchy surface, we construct a unitary dynamics which evolves a given quantum state at a time for the observer to a quantum state at a later time. We speculate on possible l…
We study gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild spacetime by solving a hyperboloidal initial value problem for the Bardeen-Press equation. Compactification along hyperboloidal surfaces in a scri-fixing gauge allows us to have access to the gravitational waveform at null infinity in a general setup. We argue that this hyperboloidal approach leads to a more accurate and efficient calculation of the radiation signal than the common approach where a timelike outer boundary is introduced. The method can be generalized to study perturbations of Kerr spacetime using the Teukolsky equation.
Here we construct new solution for the Einstein equations -- some analog of the Schwarzschild metric in anti--de Sitter--Beltrami space in the $c\to \infty$ limit ($R$-space). In this case we derive an adiabatic invariant for finite movement of the massive point particle and separate variables Hamilton--Jacobi equation. Quasi orbital motion is analyzed and its radius time dependence is obtained.
