This paper is a contribution to the study of a quasi-order on the set $Ω$ of Boolean functions, the \emph{simple minor} quasi-order. We look at the join-irreducible members of the resulting poset $\tildeΩ$. Using a two-way correspondence between Boolean functions and hypergraphs, join-irreducibility translates into a combinatorial property of hypergraphs. We observe that among Steiner systems, those which yield join-irreducible members of $\tildeΩ$ are the -2-monomorphic Steiner systems. We also describe the graphs which correspond to join-irreducible members of $\tildeΩ$.

We prove that Boolean functions on $S_n$, whose Fourier transform is highly concentrated on irreducible representations indexed by partitions of $n$ whose largest part has size at least $n-t$, are close to being unions of cosets of stabilizers of $t$-tuples. We also obtain an edge-isoperimetric inequality for the transposition graph on $S_n$ which is asymptotically sharp for subsets of $S_n$ of size $n!/\textrm{poly}(n)$, using eigenvalue techniques. We then combine these two results to obtain a sharp edge-isoperimetric inequality for subsets of $S_n$ of size $(n-t)!$, where $n$ is large compa…
In any Coxeter group, the set of elements whose principal order ideals are boolean forms a simplicial poset under the Bruhat order. This simplicial poset defines a cell complex, called the boolean complex. In this paper it is shown that, for any Coxeter system of rank n, the boolean complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of (n-1)-dimensional spheres. The number of such spheres can be computed recursively from the unlabeled Coxeter graph, and defines a new graph invariant called the boolean number. Specific calculations of the boolean number are given for all finite and affine irreducible Co…
We prove that a balanced Boolean function on $S_{n}$ whose Fourier transform is highly concentrated on the first two irreducible representations of $S_{n}$, is close in structure to a dictatorship, a function which is determined by the image or pre-image of a single element. As a corollary, we obtain a stability result concerning extremal isoperimetric sets in the Cayley graph on $S_{n}$ generated by the transpositions. Our proof works in the case where the expectation of the function is bounded away from $0$ and $1$. In contrast, [Ellis, D., Filmus, Y., Friedgut, E., A quasi-stability result …
We present a few algorithms and methods to count fixes of permutations acting on monotone Boolean functions. Some of these methods was used by Pawelski \cite{P} to compute the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions with 8 variables.
In this paper, the author presents algorithms that allow determining the number of fixed points in permutations of a set of monotone Boolean functions. Then, using Burnside's lemma, the author determines the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 8 variables. The number obtained is 1,392,195,548,889,993,358.
Recently, Keller and Pilpel conjectured that the influence of a monotone Boolean function does not decrease if we apply to it an invertible linear transformation. Our aim in this short note is to prove this conjecture.
We investigate Boolean degree 1 functions for several classical association schemes, including Johnson graphs, Grassmann graphs, graphs from polar spaces, and bilinear forms graphs, as well as some other domains such as multislices (Young subgroups of the symmetric group). In some settings, Boolean degree 1 functions are also known as \textit{completely regular strength 0 codes of covering radius 1}, \textit{Cameron--Liebler line classes}, and \textit{tight sets}. We classify all Boolean degree $1$ functions on the multislice. On the Grassmann scheme $J_q(n, k)$ we show that all Boolean degree…
We present an orthogonal basis for functions over a slice of the Boolean hypercube. Our basis is also an orthogonal basis of eigenvectors for the Johnson and Kneser graphs. As an application of our basis, we streamline Wimmer's proof of Friedgut's theorem for slices of the Boolean hypercube.
We prove that every abelian permutation group, but known exceptions, is the symmetry group of a boolean function. This solves the problem posed in the book by Clote and Kranakis. In fact, our result is proved for a larger class of groups, namely, for all groups contained in direct sums of regular groups.
This work presents a study of perturbations of symmetric Boolean functions. In particular, it establishes a connection between exponential sums of these perturbations and Diophantine equations of the form $$ \sum_{l=0}^n \binom{n}{l} x_l=0,$$ where $x_j$ belongs to some fixed bounded subset $Γ$ of $\mathbb{Z}$. The concepts of trivially balanced symmetric Boolean function and sporadic balanced Boolean function are extended to this type of perturbations. An observation made by Canteaut and Videau for symmetric Boolean functions of fixed degree is extended. To be specific, it is proved that, exc…
We use computer algebra to study the 512-dimensional associative algebra Q B_3, the rational monoid algebra of 3 x 3 Boolean matrices. We obtain a basis for the radical in bijection with the 42 non-regular elements of B_3. The center of the 470-dimensional semisimple quotient has dimension 14; we use a splitting algorithm to find a basis of orthogonal primitive idempotents. We show that the semisimple quotient is the direct sum of simple two-sided ideals isomorphic to d x d rational matrix algebras for d = 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 7, 9, 9, 12. We construct the irreducible representations …
The Friedgut--Kalai--Naor theorem states that if a Boolean function $f\colon \{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ is close (in $L^2$-distance) to an affine function $\ell(x_1,...,x_n) = c_0 + \sum_i c_i x_i$, then $f$ is close to a Boolean affine function (which necessarily depends on at most one coordinate). We prove a similar theorem for functions defined over $\binom{[n]}{k} = \{(x_1,...,x_n) \in \{0,1\}^n : \sum_i x_i = k \}$.
We propose local versions of monotonicity for Boolean and pseudo-Boolean functions: say that a pseudo-Boolean (Boolean) function is p-locally monotone if none of its partial derivatives changes in sign on tuples which differ in less than p positions. As it turns out, this parameterized notion provides a hierarchy of monotonicities for pseudo-Boolean (Boolean) functions. Local monotonicities are shown to be tightly related to lattice counterparts of classical partial derivatives via the notion of permutable derivatives. More precisely, p-locally monotone functions are shown to have p-permutable…
An n-ary operation q:A^n->A is called an n-ary quasigroup of order |A| if in x_0=q(x_1,...,x_n) knowledge of any n elements of x_0,...,x_n uniquely specifies the remaining one. An n-ary quasigroup q is permutably reducible if q(x_1,...,x_n)=p(r(x_{s(1)},...,x_{s(k)}),x_{s(k+1)},...,x_{s(n)}) where p and r are (n-k+1)-ary and k-ary quasigroups, s is a permutation, and 1<k<n. For even n we construct a permutably irreducible n-ary quasigroup of order 4r such that all its retracts obtained by fixing one variable are permutably reducible. We use a partial Boolean function that satisfies similar pro…
For each non-constant Boolean function $q$, Klapper introduced the notion of $q$-transforms of Boolean functions. The {\em $q$-transform} of a Boolean function $f$ is related to the Hamming distances from $f$ to the functions obtainable from $q$ by nonsingular linear change of basis. In this work we discuss the existence of $q$-nearly bent functions, a new family of Boolean functions characterized by the $q$-transform. Let $q$ be a non-affine Boolean function. We prove that any balanced Boolean functions (linear or non-linear) are $q$-nearly bent if $q$ has weight one, which gives a positive a…
The 93 minions of Boolean functions stable under left composition with the clone of self-dual monotone functions are described. As an easy consequence, all $(C_1,C_2)$-stable classes of Boolean functions are determined for an arbitrary clone $C_1$ and for any clone $C_2$ containing the clone of self-dual monotone functions.
We explain why numbers occurring in the classification of polygon spaces coincide with numbers of self-dual equivalence classes of threshold functions, or of regular Boolean functions, or of decisive weighted majority games.
Let $B$ be a finite Boolean algebra. Let $\mathcal A$ be the partial order of all implication sublattices of $B$. We will compute the Möbius function on $\mathcal A$ in two different ways.
We examine a hierarchy of equivalence classes of quasi-random properties of Boolean Functions. In particular, we prove an equivalence between a number of properties including balanced influences, spectral discrepancy, local strong regularity, homomorphism enumerations of colored or weighted graphs and hypergraphs associated with Boolean functions as well as the $k$th-order strict avalanche criterion amongst others. We further construct families of quasi-random boolean functions which exhibit the properties of our equivalence theorem and separate the levels of our hierarchy.
We show that a Boolean degree $d$ function on the slice $\binom{[n]}{k}$ is a junta if $k \geq 2d$, and that this bound is sharp. We prove a similar result for $A$-valued degree $d$ functions for arbitrary finite $A$, and for functions on an infinite analog of the slice.
In this paper we analyse the complexity of boolean functions takes value 0 on a sufficiently small number of points. For many functions this leads to the analysis of a single function attains 0 only on unsigned representation of numbers from 1 to d for various d. Here we obtain a tight bounds on the DNF complexity of complete functions in terms of the number of literals and conjunctions. The method is based on a certain efficient approximation of the hypercube covering problem related to DNF complexity of a given boolean function.
We show that a Boolean degree $d$ function on the slice $\binom{[n]}{k} = \{ (x_1,\ldots,x_n) \in \{0,1\} : \sum_{i=1}^n x_i = k \}$ is a junta, assuming that $k,n-k$ are large enough. This generalizes a classical result of Nisan and Szegedy on the hypercube. Moreover, we show that the maximum number of coordinates that a Boolean degree $d$ function can depend on is the same on the slice and the hypercube.
In this paper we obtain the average sensitivity of the laced Boolean functions. This confirms a conjecture of Shparlinski. We also compute the weights of the laced Boolean functions and show that they are almost balanced.
We construct a countable bounded sublattice of the lattice of all subspaces of a vector space with two non-isomorphic maximal Boolean sublattice. We represent one of them as the range of a Banschewski function and we prove that this is not the case of the other. Hereby we solve a problem of F. Wehrung.
Boolean functions are mathematical objects used in diverse domains and have been actively researched for several decades already. One domain where Boolean functions play an important role is cryptography. There, the plethora of settings one should consider and cryptographic properties that need to be fulfilled makes the search for new Boolean functions still a very active domain. There are several options to construct appropriate Boolean functions: algebraic constructions, random search, and metaheuristics. In this work, we concentrate on metaheuristic approaches and examine the related works …
The aim of this paper is to classify order-preserving functions according to their arity gap. Noteworthy examples of order-preserving functions are so-called aggregation functions. We first explicitly classify the Lovász extensions of pseudo-Boolean functions according to their arity gap. Then we consider the class of order-preserving functions between partially ordered sets, and establish a similar explicit classification for this function class.
Suppose that f is a boolean function from F_2^n to {0,1} with spectral norm (that is the sum of the absolute values of its Fourier coefficients) at most M. We show that f may be expressed as +/- 1 combination of at most 2^(2^(O(M^4))) indicator functions of subgroups of F_2^n.
In this paper we establish some bounds on the complexity of disjunctive normal forms of boolean function from narrow subclasses (e.g. functions takes value 0 in a limited number of points). The bounds are obtained by reduction the initial problem to a simple set covering problem. The nature of the complexity bounds provided is tightly connected with Shannon effect and semi-effect for this classes.
In this paper we characterize (octal) bent generalized Boolean functions defined on $\BBZ_2^n$ with values in $\BBZ_8$. Moreover, we propose several constructions of such generalized bent functions for both $n$ even and $n$ odd.
Boolean network models have gained popularity in computational systems biology over the last dozen years. Many of these networks use canalizing Boolean functions, which has led to increased interest in the study of these functions. The canalizing depth of a function describes how many canalizing variables can be recursively picked off, until a non-canalizing function remains. In this paper, we show how every Boolean function has a unique algebraic form involving extended monomial layers and a well-defined core polynomial. This generalizes recent work on the algebraic structure of nested canali…
The largest Hamming distance between a Boolean function in $n$ variables and the set of all affine Boolean functions in $n$ variables is known as the covering radius $ρ_n$ of the $[2^n,n+1]$ Reed-Muller code. This number determines how well Boolean functions can be approximated by linear Boolean functions. We prove that \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}2^{n/2}-ρ_n/2^{n/2-1}=1, \] which resolves a conjecture due to Patterson and Wiedemann from 1983.
We survey current term-wise techniques for quadratizing high-degree pseudo-Boolean functions and introduce a new one, which allows multiple splits of terms. We also introduce the first aggregative approach, which splits a collection of terms based on their common parts.
The r-th order nonlinearity of a Boolean function is the minimum number of elements that have to be changed in its truth table to arrive at a Boolean function of degree at most r. It is shown that the (suitably normalised) r-th order nonlinearity of a random Boolean function converges strongly for all r\ge 1. This extends results by Rodier for r=1 and by Dib for r=2. The methods in the present paper are mostly of elementary combinatorial nature and also lead to simpler proofs in the cases that r=1 or 2.
Nonlinearity of rotation symmetric Boolean functions is an important topic on cryptography algorithm. Let $e\ge 1$ be any given integer. In this paper, we investigate the following question: Is the nonlinearity of the quartic rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}x_{3e}$ equal to its weight? We introduce some new simple sub-functions and develop new technique to get several recursive formulas. Then we use these recursive formulas to show that the nonlinearity of the quartic rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}x_{3e}$ i…
In this paper, several new classes of Boolean functions with few Walsh transform values, including bent, semi-bent and five-valued functions, are obtained by adding the product of two or three linear functions to some known bent functions.Numerical results show that the proposed class contains cubic bent functions that are affinely inequivalent to all known quadratic ones. Meanwhile, we determine the distribution of the Walsh spectrum of five-valued functions constructed in this paper.
In this paper we define the (edge-weighted) Cayley graph associated to a generalized Boolean function, introduce a notion of strong regularity and give several of its properties. We show some connections between this concept and generalized bent functions (gbent), that is, functions with flat Walsh-Hadamard spectrum. In particular, we find a complete characterization of quartic gbent functions in terms of the strong regularity of their associated Cayley graph.
A Boolean function $g$ is said to be an optimal predictor for another Boolean function $f$, if it minimizes the probability that $f(X^{n})\neq g(Y^{n})$ among all functions, where $X^{n}$ is uniform over the Hamming cube and $Y^{n}$ is obtained from $X^{n}$ by independently flipping each coordinate with probability $δ$. This paper is about self-predicting functions, which are those that coincide with their optimal predictor.
We prove the "Most informative boolean function" conjecture of Courtade and Kumar for high noise $ε\ge 1/2 - δ$, for some absolute constant $δ> 0$. Namely, if $X$ is uniformly distributed in $\{0,1\}^n$ and $Y$ is obtained by flipping each coordinate of $X$ independently with probability $ε$, then, provided $ε\ge 1/2 - δ$, for any boolean function $f$ holds $I(f(X);Y) \le 1 - H(ε)$. This conjecture was previously known to hold only for balanced functions.
