We discuss the problem of the spectral function of vacuum energy. In traditional approach the ultraviolet divergencies of the vacuum energy are cancelled by imposing relations between different quantum fields and their masses. The emergent theories suggest that the microscopic degrees of the underlying quantum vacuum add to the spectral function and their contribution cancels the diverging zero point energy of quantum fields. Examples of the spectral function of the vacuum energy in the condensed-matter systems with relativity emerging at low energy are presented. In the Sakharov induced gravity situation may be even more dramatic: only microscopic (Planck scale) constituent fields contribute to the vacuum energy, while the diverging zero-point energy of emergent quantum field (gravitational field) is missing. On the other hand consideration of the fermionic condensed matter systems suggests that emergent relativistic fermionic quasiparticles contribute in conventional way as Dirac vacuum.
The observation of cosmic neutrinos up to 2 PeV is used to put bounds on the energy scale of Lorentz invariance violation through the loss of energy due to the production of $e^+e^-$ pairs in the propagation of superluminal neutrinos. A model to study this effect, which allows to understand qualitatively the results of numerical simulations, is presented.
The cosmic expansion is computed for various dynamical vacuum models $Λ(H)$ and confronted to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum from Planck. We also combined CMB in a joint analysis with other probes in order to place constraints on the cosmological parameters of the dynamical vacuum models. We find that all $Λ(H)$ models are very efficient and in very good agreement with the data. Considering that the interaction term of the dark sector is given in terms of matter and radiation densities, we find that the corresponding $Λ(H)$ model shows a small but non-zero deviation from …
In this paper, a decay vacuum model $\barρ_Λ=3σM_p^2H_0 H$ is revisited by detailed analysis of background evolution and perturbation equations. We show the imprints on CMB temperature and matter power spectrum from the effective coupling terms between dark sectors by comparing to the standard cosmological constant model and observational data points (WMAP7 and SDSS DR7). We find that the decay vacuum model can describe the expansion rate at late times as well as the standard cosmological constant model but it fails to simultaneously reproduce the observed CMB and matter power spectrum. Its ge…
The spectrum of relic gravitational wave (RGW) contains high-frequency divergences, which should be removed. We present a systematic study of the issue, based on the exact RGW solution that covers the five stages, from inflation to the acceleration, each being a power law expansion. We show that the present RGW consists of vacuum dominating at $f>10^{11}$Hz and graviton dominating at $f<10^{11}$Hz, respectively. The gravitons are produced by the four cosmic transitions, mostly by the inflation-reheating one. We perform adiabatic regularization to remove vacuum divergences in three schemes: at …
We study the general relation between the power spectrum and the squeezed limit of the bispectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation produced during single-field slow-roll inflation when the initial state is a general vacuum. Assuming the scale invariance of the power spectrum, we derive a formula for the squeezed limit of the bispectrum, represented by the parameter fNL, which is not slow-roll suppressed and is found to contain a single free parameter for a given amplitude of the power spectrum. Then we derive the conditions for achieving a scale-invariant fNL, and discuss a few examples.
Vacuum energy changes during cosmological phase transitions and becomes relatively important at epochs just before phase transitions. For a viable cosmology the vacuum energy just after a phase transition must be set by the critical temperature of the next phase transition, which exposes the cosmological constant problem from a different angle. Here we propose to experimentally test the properties of vacuum energy under circumstances different from our current vacuum. One promising avenue is to consider the effect of high density phases of QCD in neutron stars. Such phases have different vacuu…
We study the effect of a non-trivial vacuum prescription on warm inflation observables, namely the power spectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation. Non-trivial choice of vacuum, can provide information about trans-Planckian physics. Traditionally, the initial condition for inflation is chosen to be the usual Bunch-Davies vacuum. Another more reasonable choice of vacuum is the so-called $α$-vacua. Because the duration of inflation is not infinite, as it is assumed in the Bunch-Davies case, imposing the initial condition at infinite past is not sensible and one must utilize another vacuum …
Vacuum to vacuum instantonic transitions modify the power spectrum of primordial gravitational waves. We evaluate the new form of the power spectrum for ordinary gravity as well as the parity violation induced in the spectrum by a modification of General Relativity known as Holst term and we outline the possible experimental consequences.
We investigate the effect of entanglement between two causally separated open charts in de Sitter space on the spectrum of vacuum fluctuations. We consider a free massive scalar field, and construct the reduced density matrix by tracing out the vacuum state for one of the open charts, as recently derived by Maldacena and Pimentel. We formulate the mean-square vacuum fluctuations by using the reduced density matrix and show that the scale invariant spectrum of massless scalar field is realized on small scales. On the other hand, we find that the quantum entanglement affects the shape of the spe…
We investigate the matter density perturbation $δ_m$ and power spectrum $P(k)$ in the running vacuum model (RVM) with the cosmological constant being a function of the Hubble parameter, given by $Λ= Λ_0 + 6 σH H_0+ 3νH^2$, in which the linear and quadratic terms of $H$ would originate from the QCD vacuum condensation and cosmological renormalization group, respectively. Taking the dark energy perturbation into consideration, we derive the evolution equation for $δ_m$ and find a specific scale $d_{cr}=2 π/k_{cr}$, which divides the evolution of the universe into the sub and super-interaction re…
We recently formulated a local mechanism of vacuum energy sequester. This mechanism automatically removes all matter loop contributions to vacuum energy from the stress energy tensor which sources the curvature. Here we adapt the local vacuum energy sequestering mechanism to also cancel all the vacuum energy loops involving virtual gravitons, in addition to the vacuum energy generated by matter fields alone.
Recently, States of Low Energy (SLEs) have been proposed as viable vacuum states of primordial perturbations within Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). In this work we investigate the effect of the high curvature region of LQC on the definition of SLEs. Shifting the support of the test function that defines them away from this regime results in primordial power spectra of perturbations closer to those of the so-called Non-oscillatory (NO) vacuum, which is another viable choice of initial conditions previously introduced in the LQC context. Furthermore, through a comparison with the Hadamard-like SLE…
In this work, we study the impact of quantum entanglement on the two-point correlation function and the associated primordial power spectrum of mean square vacuum fluctuation in a bipartite quantum field theoretic system. The field theory that we consider is the effective theory of axion field arising from Type IIB string theory compactified to four dimensions. We compute the expression for the power spectrum of vacuum fluctuation in three different approaches, namely (1) field operator expansion (FOE) technique with the quantum entangled state, (2) reduced density matrix (RDM) formalism with …
We clarify under what conditions slow-roll inflation can continue almost undisturbed, while briefly evolving through a (semi-classically) metastable false vacuum. Furthermore, we look at potential signatures in the primordial power spectrum that could point towards the existence of traversed metastable false vacua. Interestingly, the theoretical constraints for the existence of traversable metastable vacua imply that Planck should be able to detect the resulting features in the primordial power spectrum. In other words, if Planck does not see features this immediately implies the non-existence…
As the vacuum state of a quantum field is not an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian density, the vacuum energy density can be represented as a random variable. We present an analytical calculation of the probability distribution of the vacuum energy density for real and complex massless scalar fields in Minkowski space. The obtained probability distributions are broad and the vacuum expectation value of the Hamiltonian density is not fully representative of the vacuum energy density.
We comprehensively study the effects of bubble wall thickness and speed on the gravitational wave emission spectrum of collisions of two vacuum bubbles. We numerically simulate a large dynamical range, making use of symmetry to reduce the dimensionality. The high-frequency slope of the gravitational wave spectrum is shown to depend on the thickness of the bubble wall, becoming steeper for thick-wall bubbles, in agreement with recent fully 3+1 dimensional lattice simulations of many-bubble collisions. This dependence is present, even for highly relativistic bubble wall collisions. We use the re…
The behavior of the gravitating vacuum energy density in an expanding universe is discussed. A scenario is presented with a step-wise relaxation of the vacuum energy density. The vacuum energy density moves from plateau to plateau and follows, on average, the steadily decreasing matter energy density. The current plateau with a small positive value of the vacuum energy density (effective cosmological constant) may result from a still not equilibrated contribution of the light massive neutrinos to the quantum vacuum.
We study scalar field fluctuations of the inflaton field in an early inflationary universe on an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) metric, which is obtained after make a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) static metric. We obtain the important result that the spectrum of fluctuations at zeroth order is independent of the scalar field mass $M$ on Schwarzschild scales, while on cosmological scales it exhibits a mass dependence. However, in the first-order expansion, the spectrum depends of the inflaton mass and the amplitude is linear with …
Vacuum energy remains the simplest model of dark energy which could drive the accelerated expansion of the Universe without necessarily introducing any new degrees of freedom. Inhomogeneous vacuum energy is necessarily interacting in general relativity. Although the four-velocity of vacuum energy is undefined, an interacting vacuum has an energy transfer and the vacuum energy defines a particular foliation of spacetime with spatially homogeneous vacuum energy in cosmological solutions. It is possible to give a consistent description of vacuum dynamics and in particular the relativistic equatio…
We consider an open universe created by bubble nucleation, and study possible effects of an "ancestor vacuum" (de Sitter space in which bubble nucleation occurred) on the present universe. We compute vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor for a minimally coupled scalar field, carefully taking into account the effect of the ancestor vacuum by the Euclidean prescription. In the study of the time evolution, an important role is played by the so-called supercurvature mode, which is non-normalizable on a spatial slice of open universe and decays in time most slowly. We point out that v…
In this work I reason that in expanding space only those quantum modes contribute to the measured vacuum energy that do not transcend the observable volume. Since all quantised field modes have various observable consequences, when a gravitational horizon causally confines an observer to a finite volume quantised modes should be restricted to the observable patch to remain consistent with gravity. Within the observable patch of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor can be expressed as a sum over discrete field modes. Friedma…
In our work, we study the evolution of primordial black holes within the context of Brans-Dicke theory by assuming present universe as vacuum dominated. We also consider the accretion of radiation, matter and vacuum energy only during respective dominant periods. From our study, we found that the accretion rate is slower in both radiation and vacuum energy dominated eras in Brans-Dicke theory in comparision with General Theory of Relativity. Thus the PBHs evaporate at a faster rate in Brans-Dicke theory than Standard Cosmology, if we consider the presence of vacuum energy in both cases. We als…
Within the framework of inflationary models that incorporate a spontaneous reduction of the wave function for the emergence of the seeds of cosmic structure, we study the effects on the primordial scalar power spectrum by choosing a novel initial quantum state that characterizes the perturbations of the inflaton. Specifically, we investigate under which conditions one can recover an essentially scale free spectrum of primordial inhomogeneities when the standard Bunch-Davies vacuum is replaced by another one that minimizes the renormalized stress-energy tensor via a Hadamard procedure. We think…
It has recently been proposed that vacuum energy is zero in spite of the quantum-field fluctuations that occur everywhere, even at absolute zero. The implication is that dark energy must have a different origin, unrelated to vacuum energy. It is proposed in this paper that noncommutative geometry, an offshoot of string theory, may provide such an origin due to its ability to account for the accelerated expansion.
We develop a geometro-dynamical approach to the cosmological constant problem (CCP) by invoking a geometry induced by the energy-momentum tensor of vacuum, matter and radiation. The construction, which utilizes the dual role of the metric tensor that it structures both the spacetime manifold and energy-momentum tensor of the vacuum, gives rise to a framework in which the vacuum energy induced by matter and radiation, instead of gravitating, facilitates the generation of the gravitational constant. The non-vacuum sources comprising matter and radiation gravitate normally. At the level of classi…
Presently, the inclusion of the vacuum energy in the energy momentum tensor, and the inclusion of the extra dimensions in the spacetime, can not be rule out of the research in gravitation. In this work we study the influence of the vacuum energy in the collapse process of a stellar fluid, and consequently for the cosmic censorship conjecture, considering a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime with arbitrary number of dimensions. We discuss the active gravitational mass of the black hole formed, where the vacuum energy and the number of dimensions has a crucial role in the process.
In this paper, we investigate the evolution of primordial black hole (PBH) in vacuum-dominated era within Brans-Dicke cosmology. We consider the accretion of vacuum energy by PBHs and found that vacuum energy accretion efficiency should be less than 0.61. We also study the evaporation of PBHs where we conclude that larger the value of accretion efficiency longer live the PBHs. We also find that PBHs evaporate at a quicker rate in Brans-Dicke theory compared with Standard Cosmology.
The lately proposed vacuum matter coupling model (arXiv:1303.6568) seems to be able to provide solutions to a variety of problems in cosmology. This coupling expressed by a transition term between vacuum energy and matter, but we point out that an additional energy transition mechanism is necessary for further development of this model in order to explain observations.
Describing the presently observable Universe as a self-sustained condensate of gravitons of size $H_0^{-1}$, with large occupation number $N$, we argue that the most probable value for the quantum vacuum energy is of the order of the critical energy density, as observed.
We discuss the weight of vacuum energy in various contexts. First, we compute the vacuum energy for flat spacetimes of the form $\mathbb{T}^3 \times \mathbb{R}$, where $\mathbb{T}^3$ stands for a general 3-torus. We discover a quite simple relationship between energy at radius $R$ and energy at radius $\frac{l_s^2}{ R}$. Then we consider quantum gravity effects in the vacuum energy of a scalar field in $\mathbb{M}_3 \times S^1$ where $\mathbb{M}_3$ is a general curved spacetime, and the circle $S^1$ refers to a spacelike coordinate. We compute it for General Relativity and generic transverse {…
We review the origins, motivations, and implications for cosmology and black holes, of our proposal that "dark energy" is not a quantum vacuum energy, but rather arises from a Weyl scaling invariant nonderivative component of the gravitational action.
We investigate first-order vacuum phase transitions in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field starting with the coupling effect on the initial dynamics of phase transitions by defining an effective potential for the scalar field and then performing three dimensional numerical simulations to observe any possible distinction in gravitational wave power spectrum. Although we give a description of the model with the expanding background, in this particular paper, we exclude the scale factor contribution since we primarily focus on the immediate impact of the non-minimal coupling at i…
We argue that calculating vacuum energy requires quantum field theory whose axioms are adapted to curved spacetime. In this context, we suggest that non-zero vacuum energy is connected to dynamical breaking of electroweak symmetry. The observed meV scale can be understood in terms of electroweak physics via a naive estimate. The scenario requires all particle masses to have a dynamical origin. Any Higgs particle has to be a composite, and the origin of vacuum energy might be probed at the LHC.
We describe a link between the cosmological constant problem and the problem of time in quantum gravity. This arises by examining the relationship between the cosmological constant and vacuum energy in light of non-perturbative formulations of quantum gravity.
