We study the general relation between the power spectrum and the squeezed limit of the bispectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation produced during single-field slow-roll inflation when the initial state is a general vacuum. Assuming the scale invariance of the power spectrum, we derive a formula for the squeezed limit of the bispectrum, represented by the parameter fNL, which is not slow-roll suppressed and is found to contain a single free parameter for a given amplitude of the power spectrum. Then we derive the conditions for achieving a scale-invariant fNL, and discuss a few examples.
Using the consistency relation in Fourier space, we derive the observed galaxy bispectrum from single-field inflation in the squeezed limit, in which one of the three modes has a wavelength much longer than the other two. This provides a non-trivial check of the full computation of the bispectrum based on second-order cosmological perturbation theory in this limit. We show that gauge modes need to be carefully removed in the second-order cosmological perturbations in order to calculate the observed galaxy bispectrum in the squeezed limit. We then give an estimate of the effective non-Gaussiani…
We calculate tensor bispectrum in a theory of massive tensor gravitons which predicts blue-tilted and largely amplified primordial gravitational waves. We find that a new 3-point interaction can produce a larger tensor bispectrum than the conventional one from general relativity. The bispectrum peaks at the squeezed configuration and its slope towards the squeezed limit is determined by the graviton mass. This squeezed tensor bispectrum may be observed as the quadrupolar modulation of the tensor power spectrum by interferometers.
We discuss the constraints imposed on the nonlinear evolution of the Large Scale Structure (LSS) of the universe by galilean invariance, the symmetry relevant on subhorizon scales. Using Ward identities associated to the invariance, we derive fully nonlinear consistency relations between statistical correlators of the density and velocity perturbations, such as the power spectrum and the bispectrum. These relations are valid up to O (f_{NL}^2) corrections. We then show that most of the semi-analytic methods proposed so far to resum the perturbative expansion of the LSS dynamics fail to fulfill…
We study features in the bispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation correlated with the reconstructed primordial power spectrum from the observed cosmic microwave background temperature data. We first show how the bispectrum can be completely specified in terms of the power spectrum and its first two derivatives, valid for any configuration of interest. Then using a model-independent reconstruction of the primordial power spectrum from the Planck angular power spectrum of temperature anisotropies, we compute the bispectrum in different triangular configurations. We find that in the sq…
We derive a formula for the halo/galaxy bispectrum on the basis of the integrated Perturbation Theory (iPT). In addition to the gravity-induced non-Gaussianity, we consider the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbations, and investigate in detail the effect of such primordial non-Gaussianity on the large-scale halo/galaxy bispectrum. In iPT, the effects of primordial non-Gaussianity are wholly encapsulated in the linear (primordial) polyspectra, and we systematically calculate the contributions to the large-scale behaviors arising from the three types of primordial bispectrum (l…
We calculate the squeezed limit of the bispectrum produced by inflation with multiple light fields. To achieve this we allow for different horizon exit times for each mode and calculate the intrinsic field-space three-point function in the squeezed limit using soft-limit techniques. We then use the $δN$ formalism from the time the last mode exits the horizon to calculate the bispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation. We apply our results to calculate the spectral index of the halo bias, $n_{δb}$, an important observational probe of the squeezed limit of the primordial bispectrum and …
We investigate the relation between the non-Gaussianities of the primordial perturbations and the sound speed of the tensor perturbations, that is, the propagation speed of the gravitational waves. We find that the sound speed of the tensor perturbations is directly related not to the auto-bispectrum of the tensor perturbations but to the cross-bispectrum of the primordial perturbations, especially, the scalar-tensor-tensor bispectrum. This result is in sharp contrast with the case of the scalar (curvature) perturbations, where their reduced sound speed enhances their auto-bispectrum. Our find…
We investigate the signatures in the squeezed limit of the primordial scalar bispectrum due to modifications of the standard theory at high energy. In particular, we consider the cases of modified dispersion relations and/or modified initial quantum state (both in the Boundary Effective Field Theory and in the New Physics Hyper-Surface formulations). Using the in-in formalism we study in details the squeezed limit of the contributions to the bispectrum from all possible cubic couplings in the effective theory of single-field inflation. We find general features such as enhancements and/or non-l…
In 2004, Creminelli and Zaldarriaga proposed a consistency relation for the primordial curvature perturbation of all single-field inflation models; it related the bispectrum in the squeezed limit to the spectral tilt. We have developed a technique, based in part on the Creminelli and Zaldarriaga argument, that can greatly simplify the calculation of the squeezed-limit bispectrum using the in-in formalism; we were able to arrive at a generic formula that does not rely on a slow-roll approximation. Using our formula, we explicitly tested the consistency relation for power-law inflation and for a…
The squeezed limit of the three-point function of cosmological perturbations is a powerful discriminant of different models of the early Universe. We present a conceptually simple and complete framework to relate any primordial bispectrum in this limit to late time observables, such as the CMB temperature bispectrum and the scale-dependent halo bias. We employ a series of convenient coordinate transformations to capture the leading non-linear effects of cosmological perturbation theory on these observables. This makes crucial use of Fermi Normal Coordinates and their conformal generalization, …
The bispectrum of primordial curvature perturbations in the squeezed configuration, in which one wavenumber, $k_3$, is much smaller than the other two, $k_3\ll k_1\approx k_2$, plays a special role in constraining the physics of inflation. In this paper we study a new phenomenological signature in the squeezed-limit bispectrum: namely, the amplitude of the squeezed-limit bispectrum depends on an angle between ${\bf k}_1$ and ${\bf k}_3$ such that $B_ζ(k_1, k_2, k_3) \to 2 \sum_L c_L P_L(\hat{\bf k}_1 \cdot \hat{\bf k}_3) P_ζ(k_1)P_ζ(k_3)$, where $P_L$ are the Legendre polynomials. While $c_0$ …
If time-dependent disruptions from slow-roll occur during inflation, the correlation functions of the primordial curvature perturbation should have scale-dependent features, a case which is marginally supported from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We offer a new approach to analyze the appearance of such features in the primordial bispectrum that yields new consistency relations and justifies the search of oscillating patterns modulated by orthogonal and local templates. Under the assumption of sharp features, we find that the cubic couplings of the curvature perturbation can be ex…
Modeling the nonlinearity of the halo bispectrum remains a major challenge in modern cosmology, in particular for ongoing and upcoming large-scale structure observations that are performed to study the inflationary physics. The "power spectrum response" offers a solution for bispectrum in the so-called squeezed limit, in which one wavenumber is much smaller than the other two. As a first step, we demonstrate that the halo squeezed-limit bispectrum computed from the second-order standard perturbation theory agrees precisely with the responses of linear halo power spectrum to large-scale density…
In the non-relativistic regime, pertinent to the large scale structure of the Universe, the leading effect of a long-wavelength perturbation $δ(λ_L)$ on short distance physics is a uniform acceleration $\propto λ_L δ(λ_L)$. Typically, this has no effect on statistical averages at equal time since a uniform acceleration results in a uniform translation -- a reasoning that has been formalized as a "consistency condition" on the cosmological correlation functions. This naive expectation fails in the presence of the baryon acoustic feature provided $λ_L < \ell_{\rm BAO}$. We derive the squeezed li…
We investigate the effect of equilateral-type primordial trispectrum on the halo/galaxy bispectrum. We consider three types of equilateral primordial trispectra which are generated by quartic operators naturally appeared in the effective field theory of inflation and can be characterized by three non-linearity parameters, $g_{\rm NL} ^{\dotσ^4}$, $g_{\rm NL} ^{\dotσ^2 (\partial σ)^2}$, and $g_{\rm NL} ^{(\partial σ)^4}$. Recently, constraints on these parameters have been investigated from CMB observations by using WMAP9 data. In order to consider the halo/galaxy bispectrum with the equilatera…
We compute the cosmic microwave background temperature bispectrum generated by nonlinearities at recombination on all scales. We use CosmoLib$2^{\rm nd}$, a numerical Boltzmann code at second-order to compute CMB bispectra on the full sky. We consistently include all effects except gravitational lensing, which can be added to our result using standard methods. The bispectrum is peaked on squeezed triangles and agrees with the analytic approximation in the squeezed limit at the few per cent level for all the scales where this is applicable. On smaller scales, we recover previous results on pert…
We present a calculation of the angle-averaged squeezed matter bispectrum covariance ${\rm Cov}\left(B_{m}(k_1, k_1', s_1), B_{m}(k_2, k_2', s_2)\right)$, $s_i \ll k_i,k_i'$ ($i=1,2$), that uses matter power spectrum responses to describe the coupling of large- to short-scale modes in the nonlinear regime. The covariance is given by a certain configuration of the 6-point function, which we show is dominated by response-type mode-coupling terms in the squeezed bispectrum limit. The terms that are not captured by responses are small, effectively rendering our calculation complete and predictive …
We investigate influences of the curved field-space metric of multi-field inflationary models on the squeezed bispectrum. The reduced bispectrum in squeezed limit is computed using the δN formalism. The calculation is performed under the slow-roll approximation and assumption that field derivative of the field-space metric is sufficiently small such that the contributions from Riemann tensor of the field-space can be approximately ignored. Based on these approximations, We compute the analytic expressions for the reduced bispectrum in squeezed limit, and find that, for such a nearly flat field…
We present a detailed calculation of our previous short paper [M. Shiraishi, D. Nitta, S. Yokoyama, K. Ichiki, and K. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. D 82, 121302 (2010).] in which we have investigated a constraint on the magnetic field strength through comic microwave background temperature bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. By taking into account full angular dependence of the bispectrum with spin spherical harmonics and Wigner symbols, we explicitly show that the cosmic microwave background bispectrum induced from the statistical-isotropic primordial vector fluctuatio…
The high-mass end of the halo mass function is a sensitive probe of primordial non-Gaussianity (NG). In a recent study [9] we have computed the NG halo mass function in the context of the Excursion Set theory and shown that the primordial NG imprint is coupled to that induced by the non-linear collapse of dark matter halos. We also found an excellent agreement with N-body simulation results. Here, we perform a more accurate computation which accounts for the interval validity of the bispectrum expansion to next-to-leading order and extend the calculation to the case of a non-vanishing primordi…
The influence of large-scale density fluctuations on structure formation on small scales is described by the three-point correlation function (bispectrum) in the so-called "squeezed configurations," in which one wavenumber, say $k_3$, is much smaller than the other two, i.e., $k_3\ll k_1\approx k_2$. This bispectrum is generated by non-linear gravitational evolution and possibly also by inflationary physics. In this paper, we use this fact to show that the bispectrum in the squeezed configurations can be measured without employing three-point function estimators. Specifically, we use the "posi…
The CMB bispectrum generated by second-order effects at recombination can be calculated analytically when one of the three modes has a wavelength much longer than the other two and is outside the horizon at recombination. This was pointed out in \cite{Creminelli:2004pv} and here we correct their results. We derive a simple formula for the bispectrum, $f_{NL}^{loc} = - (1/6+ \cos 2 θ) \cdot (1- 1/2 \cdot d \ln (l_S^2 C_{S})/d \ln l_S)$, where $C_S$ is the short scale spectrum and $θ$ the relative orientation between the long and the short modes. This formula is exact and takes into account all …
We investigate the consistency relation relating the squeezed limit of the bispectrum to the scalar spectral index in single field models of inflation. We give a simple integral formula for the bispectrum in the squeezed limit in terms of the free mode mode functions of the primordial curvature perturbation, in any Lorentz invariant single field model of inflation and without resorting to any approximation, generalizing a recent result obtained by Ganc and Komatsu in the case of canonical kinetic terms. We use our result to verify the consistency relation in an exactly solvable class of models…
We calculate the cosmic microwave background bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. We take into account the full angular dependence of the bispectrum and discuss the amplitude and also the shape of the bispectrum in $\ell$ space. In the squeezed limit as $\ell_1 = \ell_2 \gg \ell_3$, we estimate a typical values of the normalized reduced bispectrum as $\ell_1(\ell_1 + 1)\ell_3(\ell_3+1)|b_{\ell_1\ell_2\ell_3}| \sim 2 \times 10^{-19}$, for the strength of the primordial magnetic field smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$ scale $B_{1 \rm Mpc} = 4.7 \rm nG$ assuming a nearly sc…
Using the full radiation transfer function, we numerically calculate the CMB angular bispectrum seeded by the compensated magnetic scalar density mode. We find that, for the string inspired primordial magnetic fields characterized by index $n_B=-2.9$ and mean-field amplitude $B_{\lam}=9{\rm nG}$, the angular bispectrum is dominated by two primordial magnetic shapes. The first magnetic shape looks similar to the one from local-type primordial curvature perturbations, so both the amplitude and profile of the Komatsu-Spergel estimator (reduced bispectrum) seeded by this shape are almost the same …
We measure the halo bispectrum covariance in a large set of N-body simulations and compare it with theoretical expectations. We find a large correlation among (even mildly) squeezed halo bispectrum configurations. A similarly large correlation can be found between squeezed triangles and the long-wavelength halo power spectrum. This shows that the diagonal Gaussian contribution fails to describe, even approximately, the full covariance in these cases. We compare our numerical estimate with a model that includes, in addition to the Gaussian one, only the non-Gaussian terms that are large for squ…
The squeezed-limit bispectrum, which is generated by nonlinear gravitational evolution as well as inflationary physics, measures the correlation of three wavenumbers, in the configuration where one wavenumber is much smaller than the other two. Since the squeezed-limit bispectrum encodes the impact of a large-scale fluctuation on the small-scale power spectrum, it can be understood as how the small-scale power spectrum "responds" to the large-scale fluctuation. Viewed in this way, the squeezed-limit bispectrum can be calculated using the response approach even in the cases which do not submit …
We compute the matter bispectrum in the presence of primordial local non-Gaussianity over a wide range of scales, including the very small nonlinear ones. We use the Halo Model approach, considering non-Gaussian corrections to the halo profiles, the halo mass function and the bias functions. We compare our results in the linear and mildly nonlinear scales to a large ensemble of Gaussian and non-Gaussian numerical simulations. We consider both squeezed and equilateral configurations, at redshift z = 0 and z = 1. For z = 0, the deviations between the Halo Model and the simulations are smaller th…
The conventional cosmological perturbation theory has been performed under the assumption that we know the whole spatial region of the universe with infinite volume. This is, however, not the case in the actual observations because observable portion of the universe is limited. To give a theoretical prediction to the observable fluctuations, gauge-invariant observables should be composed of the information in our local observable universe with finite volume. From this point of view, we reexamine the primordial non-Gaussianity in single field models, focusing on the bispectrum in the squeezed l…
We explain the motivation and main idea of our work in reference arXiv:0907.2476 [hep-th]. We present a simple model of multifield Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation whose bispectrum exhibits a linear combination of the equilateral and local shapes, which are usually considered as separate possibilities. We also point out the presence of a particularly interesting component of the primordial trispectrum.
The first year of observations by the Planck satellite mission shows that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations are consistent with gaussian statistics in the primordial perturbations, a key prediction of the simplest models of inflation. However, there are hints of anomalies in the CMB power spectrum and bispectrum. We check for the possibility that some of these anomalous features have a common physical origin in a transient reduction of the inflaton speed of sound. We do this by exploiting predicted correlations between the power spectrum and bispectrum. Our results suggest tha…
We study an inflationary model driven by a single minimally coupled standard kinetic term scalar field with a step in its mass modeled by an Heaviside step function. We present an analytical approximation for the mode function of the curvature perturbation, obtain the power spectrum analytically and compare it with the numerical result. We show that, after the scale set by the step, the spectrum contains damped oscillations that are well described by our analytical approximation. We also compute the dominant contribution to the bispectrum in the equilateral and the squeezed limits and find new…
We examine the potential of polarization bispectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to constrain primordial magnetic fields (PMFs). We compute all possible bispectra between temperature and polarization anisotropies sourced by PMFs and show that they are weakly correlated with well-known local-type and secondary ISW-lensing bispectra. From a Fisher analysis it is found that, owing to E-mode bispectra, in a cosmic-variance-limited experiment the expected uncertainty in the amplitude of magnetized bispectra is 80% improved in comparison with an analysis in terms of temperature auto-bispe…
We study the primordial bispectrum of curvature perturbation in the uniform- density slicing generated by the interaction between the inflaton and isotropic background gauge fields. We derive the action up to cubic order in perturbation and take into account all the relevant effects in the leading order of slow-roll expansion. We first treat the quadratic vertices perturbatively and confirm the results of past studies, while identifying their regime of validity. We then extend the analysis to include the effect of the quadratic vertices to all orders by introducing exact linear mode functions,…
The small-scale CMB temperature we observe on the sky is modulated by perturbations that were super-horizon at recombination, giving differential focussing and lensing that generate a non-zero bispectrum even for single-field inflation where local physics is identical. Understanding this signal is important for primordial non-Gaussianity studies and also parameter constraints from the CMB lensing bispectrum signal. Because of cancellations individual effects can appear larger or smaller than they are in total, so a full analysis may be required to avoid biases. I relate angular scales on the s…
Angular bispectrum and trispectrum of scalar-induced gravitational waves: all contributions from primordial non-Gaussianity $f_\mathrm{NL}$ and $g_\mathrm{NL}$
Realistic models of high-energy physics include multiple scalar fields. Renormalization requires that the fields have nonminimal couplings to the spacetime Ricci curvature scalar, and the couplings can be large at the energy scales of early-universe inflation. The nonminimal couplings induce a nontrivial field-space manifold in the Einstein frame, and they also yield an effective potential in the Einstein frame with nontrivial curvature. The ridges or bumps in the Einstein-frame potential can lead to primordial non-Gaussianities of observable magnitude. We develop a covariant formalism to stud…
We study perturbation theory for large-scale structure in the most general scalar-tensor theories propagating a single scalar degree of freedom, which include Horndeski theories and beyond. We model the parameter space using the effective field theory of dark energy. For Horndeski theories, the gravitational field and fluid equations are invariant under a combination of time-dependent transformations of the coordinates and fields. This symmetry allows one to construct a physical adiabatic mode which fixes the perturbation-theory kernels in the squeezed limit and ensures that the well-known con…
We present the effective field theory studies of primordial statistical anisotropies in models of anisotropic inflation. The general action in unitary gauge is presented to calculate the leading interactions between the gauge field fluctuations, the curvature perturbations and the tensor perturbations. The anisotropies in scalar power spectrum and bispectrum are calculated and the dependence of these anisotropies to EFT couplings are presented. In addition, we calculate the statistical anisotropy in tensor power spectrum and the scalar-tensor cross correlation. Our EFT approach incorporates an…
We compute the full cosmic microwave background temperature bispectrum generated by nonlinearities after single-field inflation. By integrating the photon temperature at second order along a perturbed geodesic in Newtonian gauge, we derive an expression for the observed temperature fluctuations that, for the first time, clarifies the separation of the gravitational lensing and time-delay effects from the purely second-order contributions. We then use the second-order Boltzmann code CosmoLib$2^{\rm nd}$ to calculate these contributions and their bispectrum. Including the perturbations in the ph…
We derive a direct correlation between the power spectrum and bispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation in terms of the Goldstone mode based on the effective field theory approach to inflation. We show examples of correlated bispectra for the parametrized feature models presented by the Planck collaboration. We also discuss the consistency relation and the validity of our explicit correlation between the power spectrum and bispectrum.
Non-attractor models of inflation are characterized by the super-horizon evolution of curvature perturbations, introducing a violation of the non-Gaussian consistency relation between the bispectrum's squeezed limit and the power spectrum's spectral index. In this work we show that the bispectrum's squeezed limit of non-attractor models continues to respect a relation dictated by the evolution of the background. We show how to derive this relation using only symmetry arguments, without ever needing to solve the equations of motion for the perturbations.
We study the parity violation in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum induced by primordial magnetic fields (PMFs). Deriving a general formula for the CMB bispectrum generated from not only non-helical but also helical PMFs, we find that helical PMFs produce characteristic signals, which disappear in parity-conserving cases, such as the intensity-intensity-intensity bispectra arising from $\sum_{n=1}^3 \ell_n = {\rm odd}$. For fast numerical calculation of the CMB bispectrum, we reduce the one-loop formula to the tree-level one by using the so-called pole approximation. Then, we sh…
We consider a primordial SU(2) vector multiplet during inflation in models where quantum fluctuations of vector fields are involved in producing the curvature perturbation. Recently, a lot of attention has been paid to models populated by vector fields, given the interesting possibility of generating some level of statistical anisotropy in the cosmological perturbations. The scenario we propose is strongly motivated by the fact that, for non-Abelian gauge fields, self-interactions are responsible for generating extra terms in the cosmological correlation functions, which are naturally absent i…
We compute the bispectrum induced in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarisation by the evolution of the primordial density perturbations using the second-order Boltzmann code SONG. We show that adding polarisation increases the signal-to-noise ratio by a factor four with respect to temperature alone and we estimate the observability of this intrinsic bispectrum and the bias it induces on measurements of primordial non-Gaussianity. When including all physical effects except the late-time non-linear evolution, we find for the intrinsic bispectrum a signal-to-noise of $S/N…
Next-generation galaxy surveys will increasingly rely on the galaxy bispectrum to improve cosmological constraints, especially on primordial non-Gaussianity. A key theoretical requirement that remains to be developed is the analysis of general relativistic effects on the bispectrum, which arise from observing galaxies on the past lightcone, {as well as from relativistic corrections to the dynamics}. {As an initial step towards a fully relativistic analysis of the galaxy bispectrum, we compute for the first time the local relativistic lightcone effects on the bispectrum,} which come from Dopple…
We investigate the gravitational effect of large-scale radiation perturbations on small-scale structure formation. In addition to making the growth of matter perturbations scale dependent, the free-streaming of radiation also affects the coupling between structure formation at small and large scales. We study this using Separate Universe N-body simulations to compute the (isotropized) squeezed-limit matter bispectrum and the linear halo bias. Our results show that the scale dependence in the growth of long-wavelength matter perturbations, caused by radiation, translates into these quantities a…
Recent studies have demonstrated that {\em secondary} non-Gaussianity induced by gravity will be detected with a high signal-to-noise (S/N) by future and even by on-going weak lensing surveys. One way to characterise such non-Gaussianity is through the detection of a non-zero three-point correlation function of the lensing convergence field, or of its harmonic transform, the bispectrum. A recent study analysed the properties of the squeezed configuration of the bispectrum, when two wavenumbers are much larger than the third one. We extend this work by estimating the amplitude of the (reduced) …
We present an all-sky formalism for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum induced by the primordial non-Gaussianities not only in scalar but also in vector and tensor fluctuations. We find that the bispectrum can be formed in an explicitly rationally invariant way by taking into account the angular and polarization dependences of the vector and tensor modes. To demonstrate this and present how to use our formalism, we consider a specific example of the correlation between two scalars and a graviton as the source of non-Gaussianity. As a result, we show that the CMB reduced bispectru…
The primordial bispectrum has been considered in the past decade as a powerful probe of the physical processes taking place in the early Universe. Within the inflationary paradigm, the properties of the bispectrum are one of the keys that serves to discriminate among competing scenarios concerning the details of the origin of cosmological perturbations. However, all of the scenarios, based on the conventional approach to the so-called "quantum-to-classical transition" during inflation, lack the ability to point out the precise physical mechanism responsible for generating the inhomogeneity and…
We evaluate the angular bispectrum of the CMB temperature anisotropy at large angular scale due to a stochastic background of primordial magnetic fields. The shape of non-Gaussianity depends on the spectral index of the magnetic field power spectrum and is peaked in the squeezed configuration for a scale-invariant magnetic spectrum. By using the large angular part of the bispectrum generated by magnetic fields, the present bounds on non-Gaussianity set a limit on the amplitude of the primordial magnetic field of the order of 10 nGauss for the scale-invariant case and 20 nGauss for the other sp…
Measurements of the non-Gaussianity of the primordial density field have the power to considerably improve our understanding of the physics of inflation. Indeed, if we can increase the precision of current measurements by an order of magnitude, a null-detection would rule out many classes of scenarios for generating primordial fluctuations. Large-scale galaxy redshift surveys represent experiments that hold the promise to realise this goal. Thus, we model the galaxy bispectrum and forecast the accuracy with which it will probe the parameter $f_{\rm NL}$, which represents the degree of primordi…
