We report electronic control and measurement of an imbalance between spin-up and spin-down electrons in micron-scale open quantum dots. Spin injection and detection was achieved with quantum point contacts tuned to have spin-selective transport, with four contacts per dot for realizing a non-local spin-valve circuit. This provides an interesting system for studies of spintronic effects since the contacts to reservoirs can be controlled and characterized with high accuracy. We show how this can be used to extract in a single measurement the relaxation time for electron spins inside the dot ~ 300 ps and the degree of spin polarization of the contacts P ~ 0.8.
We explore thermoelectric spin transport and spin dependent phenomena in a non-collinear quantum dot spin valve set up. Using this set up, we demonstrate the possibility of a thermoelectric excitation of single spin dynamics inside the quantum dot. Many-body exchange fields generated on the single spins in this set up manifest as effective magnetic fields acting on the net spin accumulation in the quantum dot. We first identify generic conditions by which a zero bias spin accumulation in the dot may be created in the thermoelectric regime. The resulting spin accumulation is then shown to be su…
Sensitive charge detection has enabled qubit readout in solid-state systems. Recently, an alternative to the well-established charge detection via on-chip electrometers has emerged, based on in situ gate detectors and radio-frequency dispersive readout techniques. This approach promises to facilitate scalability by removing the need for additional device components devoted to sensing. Here, we perform gate-based dispersive readout of an accumulation-mode silicon quantum dot. We observe that the response of an accumulation-mode gate detector is significantly affected by its bias voltage, partic…
Time-dependent electron transport through a quantum dot and double quantum dot systems in the presence of polychromatic external periodic quantum dot energy-level modulations is studied within the time evolution operator method for a tight-binding Hamiltonian. Analytical relations for the dc-current flowing through the system and the charge accumulated on a quantum dot are obtained for the zero-temperature limit. It is shown that in the presence of periodic perturbations the sideband peaks of the transmission are related to combination frequencies of the applied modulations. For a double quant…
We report on a quantum dot device design that combines the low disorder properties of undoped SiGe heterostructure materials with an overlapping gate stack in which each electrostatic gate has a dominant and unique function -- control of individual quantum dot occupancies and of lateral tunneling into and between dots. Control of the tunneling rate between a dot and an electron bath is demonstrated over more than nine orders of magnitude and independently confirmed by direct measurement within the bandwidth of our amplifiers. The inter-dot tunnel coupling at the (0,2)<-->(1,1) charge configura…
We study the concept of spin heat accumulation in excited spin valves, more precisely the effective electron temperature that may become spin dependent, both in linear response and far from equilibrium. A temperature or voltage gradient create non-equilibrium energy distributions of the two spin ensembles in the normal metal spacer, which approach Fermi-Dirac functions through energy relaxation mediated by electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling. Both mechanisms also exchange energy between the spin subsystems. This inter-spin energy exchange may strongly affect thermoelectric propertie…
Quantum dot arrays are a versatile platform for the implementation of spin qubits, as high-bandwidth sensor dots can be integrated with single-, double- and triple-dot qubits yielding fast and high-fidelity qubit readout. However, for undoped silicon devices, reflectometry off sensor ohmics suffers from the finite resistivity of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), and alternative readout methods are limited to measuring qubit capacitance, rather than qubit charge. By coupling a surface-mount resonant circuit to the plunger gate of a high-impedance sensor, we realized a fast charge sensing…
We theoretically study electronic transport through a layer of quantum dots connecting two metallic leads. By the inclusion of an inductor in series with the junction, we show that steady electronic transport in such a system may be unstable with respect to temporal oscillations caused by an interplay between the Coulomb blockade of tunneling and spin accumulation in the dots. When this instability occurs, a new stable regime is reached, where the average spin and charge in the dots oscillate periodically in time. The frequency of these oscillations is typically of the order of 1GHz for realis…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of a few-electron quantum dot controlled by a single gate electrode. Our device has a double-quantum-well design, in which the doping controls the occupancy of the lower well while the upper well remains empty under the free surface. A small air-bridged gate contacts the surface, and is positively biased to draw laterally confined electrons into the upper well. Electrons tunneling between this accumulation-mode dot and the lower well are detected using a quantum point contact (QPC), located slightly offset from the dot gate. The charge state of…
We study the relaxation of the exciton spin (longitudinal relaxation time $T_{1}$) in single asymmetrical quantum dots due to an interplay of the short--range exchange interaction and acoustic phonon deformation. The calculated relaxation rates are found to depend strongly on the dot size, magnetic field and temperature. For typical quantum dots and temperatures below 100 K, the zero--magnetic field relaxation times are long compared to the exciton lifetime, yet they are strongly reduced in high magnetic fields. We discuss explicitly quantum dots based on (In,Ga)As and (Cd,Zn)Se semiconductor …
We study and compare two analytic models of graphene quantum dots for calculating charge relaxation times due to electron-phonon interaction. Recently, charge relaxation processes in graphene quantum dots have been probed experimentally and here we provide a theoretical estimate of relaxations times. By comparing a model with pure edge confinement to a model with electrostatic confinement, we find that the latter features much larger relaxation times. Interestingly, relaxation times in electrostatically defined quantum dots are predicted to exceed the experimentally observed lower bound of ~10…
We have measured electron spin accumulation at 4.2 K and at room temperature in an aluminium island with all dimensions (400nm x 400nm x 30nm) smaller than the spin relaxation length. For the first time, we obtain uniform spin accumulation in a four-terminal lateral device with a magnitude exceeding the ohmic resistance in the island. By controlling the magnetisation directions of the four magnetic electrodes that contact the island, we have performed a detailed study of the spin accumulation. Spin precession measurements confirm the uniformity of our system and provide an accurate method to e…
We investigate theoretically spin relaxation in heavy hole quantum dots in low external magnetic fields. We demonstrate that two-phonon processes and spin-orbit interaction are experimentally relevant and provide an explanation for the recently observed saturation of the spin relaxation rate in heavy hole quantum dots with vanishing magnetic fields. We propose further experiments to identify the relevant spin relaxation mechanisms in low magnetic fields.
We investigate heavy-hole spin relaxation and decoherence in quantum dots in perpendicular magnetic fields. We show that at low temperatures the spin decoherence time is two times longer than the spin relaxation time. We find that the spin relaxation time for heavy holes can be comparable to or even longer than that for electrons in strongly two-dimensional quantum dots. We discuss the difference in the magnetic-field dependence of the spin relaxation rate due to Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling for systems with positive (i.e., GaAs quantum dots) or negative (i.e., InAs quantum dots) …
We present a theoretical study of the detection of the decay time scales for a single-level quantum dot by means of a capacitively coupled sensor dot, which acts as an electrometer. We investigate the measurement back-action on the quantum-dot decay rates and elucidate its mechanism. We explicitly show that the setup can be used to measure the bare quantum-dot relaxation rates by choosing gate pulses that minimize the back-action. Interestingly, we find that besides the charge relaxation rate, also the rate associated to the fermion parity in the dot can be accessed with this setup.
We present measurements on nuclear spin relaxation probed by a single quantum dot in a high-mobility electron gas. Current passing through the dot leads to a spin transfer from the electronic to the nuclear spin system. Applying electron spin resonance the transfer mechanism can directly be tuned. Additionally, the dependence of nuclear spin relaxation on the dot gate voltage is observed. We find electron-nuclear relaxation times of the order of 10 minutes.
Phonon-induced spin relaxation in coupled lateral quantum dots in the presence of spin-orbit coupling is calculated. The calculation for single dots is consistent with experiment. Spin relaxation in double dots at useful interdot couplings is dominated by spin hot spots that are strongly anisotropic. Spin hot spots are ineffective for a diagonal crystallographic orientation of the dots with a transverse in-plane field. This geometry is proposed for spin-based quantum information processing.
We present a theoretical analysis of the phonon-assisted relaxation in a system composed of two self-assembled vertically stacked quantum dots. We construct realistic model, which takes into account the geometry and strain distribution in the system. We calculate phonon-assisted relaxation rates between the two lowest states (in one- and two-electron cases). The relaxation rates and energy levels are studied as a function of external (axial) electric field and geometry of the structure (dot sizes). We show that the relaxation times can be as low as 1~ps but efficent relaxation occurs only for …
The role of the relaxation due to the impurity scattering and/or the contacts to leads/electrodes are studied for the spin Hall effect (SHE). Relaxation is essential to attain the steady state and also to the spin accumulation, but has been considered to be harmful for the intrinsic SHE (ISHE). These issues are examined quantitatively on two types of 2D models, i.e., (a) Rashba model for $n$-type GaAs, and (b) Luttinger model for $p$-type GaAs. It is found that ISHE is robust against the realistic strength of the disorder producing the observable amount of the spin accumulation. Especially in …
new defect-assisted mechanism of multiphonon intraband carrier relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots, where the carrier is found in a coherent superposition of the initial, final, and defect states, is proposed. It is shown that this mechanism is capable of explaining the observed trends in temperature dependences of the intraband relaxation rates for PbSe and CdSe colloidal nanocrystal quantum dots.
We study theoretically phonon-assisted relaxation and inelastic tunneling of holes in a double quantum dot. We derive hole states and relaxation rates from kp Hamiltonians and show that there is a finite distance between the dots where lifetimes of hole states are very long which is related to vanishing tunnel coupling. We show also that the light hole admixture to hole states can considerably affect the hole relaxation rates even though its magnitude is very small.
We investigate electronic transport in a three-terminal hybrid system, composed by an interacting quantum dot tunnel coupled to one superconducting, one ferromagnetic, and one normal lead. Despite the tendency of the charging energy to suppress the superconducting proximity effect when the quantum dot is in equilibrium, the non-equilibrium proximity effect can give rise to a large Andreev current. The presence of the ferromagnet can lead to a finite spin accumulation on the dot. We find that the interplay of the Andreev current and spin accumulation can generate a pure spin current, with no as…
Spin-dependent electronic transport in magnetic double-island devices is considered theoretically in the sequential tunneling regime. Electric current and tunnel magnetoresistance are analyzed as a function of the bias voltage and spin relaxation time in the islands. It is shown that the interplay of spin accumulation on the islands and charging effects leads to periodic modification of the differential conductance and tunnel magnetoresistance. For a sufficiently long spin relaxation time, the modulations are associated with periodic oscillations of the sign of both the tunnel magnetoresistanc…
We present a numerical study of spin relaxation in a semiclassical electron ensemble in a large ballistic quantum dot. The dot is defined in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction system with a two-dimensional electron gas, and relaxation occurs due to Dresselhaus and Rashba spin orbit interaction. We find that confinement in a micronscale dot can result in strongly enhanced relaxation with respect to a free two-dimensional electron ensemble, contrary to the established result that strong confinement or frequent momentum scattering reduces relaxation. This effect occurs when the size of the system is on…
We calculate the spin relaxation rates in a parabolic InSb quantum dots due to the spin interaction with acoustical phonons. We considered the deformation potential mechanism as the dominant electron-phonon coupling in the Pavlov-Firsov spin-phonon Hamiltonian. By studying suitable choices of magnetic field and lateral dot size, we determine regions where the spin relaxation rates can be practically suppressed. We analyze the behavior of the spin relaxation rates as a function of an external magnetic field and mean quantum dot radius. Effects of the spin admixture due to Dresselhaus contributi…
We study the mechanism of nuclear spin relaxation in quantum dots due to the electron exchange with 2D gas. We show that the nuclear spin relaxation rate is dramatically affected by the Coulomb blockade and can be controlled by gate voltage. In the case of strong spin-orbit coupling the relaxation rate is maximal in the Coulomb blockade valleys whereas for the weak spin-orbit coupling the maximum of the nuclear spin relaxation rate is near the Coulomb blockade peaks.
The phonon-induced spin relaxation in a two-dimensional quantum dot embedded inside a semiconductor slab is investigated theoretically. An enhanced relaxation rate is found due to the phonon van Hove singularities. Oppositely, a vanishing deformation potential may also result in a suppression of the spin relaxation rate. For larger quantum dots, the interplay between the spin orbit interaction and Zeeman levels causes the suppression of the relaxation at several points. Furthermore, a crossover from confined to bulk-like systems is obtained by varying the width of the slab.
We review recent studies on spin decoherence of electrons and holes in quasi-two-dimensional quantum dots, as well as electron-spin relaxation in nanowire quantum dots. The spins of confined electrons and holes are considered major candidates for the realization of quantum information storage and processing devices, provided that sufficently long coherence and relaxation times can be achieved. The results presented here indicate that this prerequisite might be realized in both electron and hole quantum dots, taking one large step towards quantum computation with spin qubits.
We investigate the triplet-singlet relaxation in a double quantum dot defined by top-gates in an InAs nanowire. In the Pauli spin blockade regime, the leakage current can be mainly attributed to spin relaxation. While at weak and strong inter-dot coupling relaxation is dominated by two individual mechanisms, the relaxation is strongly reduced at intermediate coupling and finite magnetic field. In addition we observe a charateristic bistability of the spin-non conserving current as a function of magnetic field. We propose a model where these features are explained by the polarization of nuclear…
We study the effect of the coupling between the hole $s$ shell of one quantum dot and the $p$ shell in the other dot forming a quantum dot molecule on the spin relaxation between the sublevels of the hole $s$ state. Using an effective model that captures the spin-orbit effects in the $p$ shell irrespective of their origin, we show that the strong spin mixing in the $p$ shell can be transferred to the $s$ shell of the other dot, leading to enhanced spin relaxation in a certain energy range around the $s$-$p$ resonance if the dots are misaligned and the magnetic field is tilted from the sample p…
We measure the relaxation rate $W \equiv T_{1}^{-1}$ of a single electron spin in a quantum dot at magnetic fields from 7 T down to 1.75 T, much lower than previously measured. At 1.75 T we find that $T_{1}$ is 170 ms. We find good agreement between our measurements and theoretical predictions of the relaxation rate caused by the spin-orbit interaction, demonstrating that spin-orbit coupling can account for spin relaxation in quantum dots.
We report the fabrication and characterization of gate-defined hole quantum dots in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$. The devices were operated with gates above and below the WSe$_2$ layer to accumulate a hole gas, which for some devices was then selectively depleted to define the dot. Temperature dependence of conductance in the Coulomb blockade regime is consistent with transport through a single level, and excited state transport through the dots was observed at temperatures up to 10 K. For adjacent charge states of a bilayer WSe$_2$ dot, magnetic field dependence of excited state energies was…
We investigate the spin relaxation induced by acoustic phonons in the presence of spin-orbit interactions in single electron Si/SiGe lateral coupled quantum dots. The relaxation rates are computed numerically in single and double quantum dots, in in-plane and perpendicular magnetic fields. The deformation potential of acoustic phonons is taken into account for both transverse and longitudinal polarizations and their contributions to the total relaxation rate are discussed with respect to the dilatation and shear potential constants. We find that in single dots the spin relaxation rate scales a…
We calculate the spin relaxation rates in a parabolic InSb quantum dots due to the spin interaction with acoustical phonons. We considered the deformation potential mechanism as the dominant electron-phonon coupling in the Pavlov-Firsov spin-phonon Hamiltonian. While time-dependent perturbation theory shows inefficient carrier-phonon scattering in semiconductor quantum dots, we demonstrate that a quantum kinetic description of carrier-phonon interaction predicts fast carrier capture and relaxation. The considered processes do not fulfill energy conservation in terms of free-carrier energies because polar coupling of localized quantum-dot states strongly modifies this picture.
We experimentally study spin accumulation in an aluminium island with all dimensions smaller than the spin relaxation length, so that the spin imbalance throughout the island is uniform. Electrical injection and detection of the spin accumulation are carried out in a four terminal geometry by means of four cobalt electrodes connected to the island through tunnel barriers. We model the system theoretically and we investigate the role of the ferromagnetic electrodes on the spin accumulation at the limit at which the electron diffusion time can be neglected. We present measurements of spin accumu…
Spin-polarized transport through quantum dots is analyzed theoretically in the cotunneling regime. It is shown that the zero-bias anomaly, found recently in the antiparallel configuration, can also exist in the case when one electrode is magnetic while the other one is nonmagnetic. Physical mechanism of the anomaly is also discussed. It is demonstrated that intrinsic spin relaxation in the dot has a significant influence on the zero-bias maximum in the differential conductance -- the anomaly becomes enhanced by weak spin-flip scattering in the dot and then disappears in the limit of fast spin …
Phonon-induced orbital and spin relaxation rates of single electron states in lateral single and double quantum dots are obtained numerically for realistic materials parameters. The rates are calculated as a function of magnetic field and interdot coupling, at various field and quantum dot orientations. It is found that orbital relaxation is due to deformation potential phonons at low magnetic fields, while piezoelectric phonons dominate the relaxation at high fields. Spin relaxation, which is dominated by piezoelectric phonons, in single quantum dots is highly anisotropic due to the interplay…
We calculate spin relaxation rates in lateral quantum dot systems due to electron exchange between dots and leads. Using rate equations, we develop a theoretical description of the experimentally observed electric current in the spin blockade regime of double quantum dots. Single expression fits the entire current profile and describes the structure of both the conduction peaks and of the suppressed (`valley') region. Extrinsic rates calculated here have to be taken into account for accurate extraction of intrinsic relaxation rates due to the spin-orbit and hyperfine spin scattering mechanisms…
We use a configuration-interaction approach and Fermi golden rule to investigate electron-phonon interaction in realistic multi-electron quantum dots. Lifetimes are computed in the low-density, highly correlated regime. We report numerical evidence that electron-electron interaction generally leads to reduced decay rates of excited electronic states in weakly confined quantum dots, where carrier relaxation is dominated by the interaction with longitudinal acoustic phonons.
We present a theoretical proposal for the Herzberg circuit and controlled accumulation of Berry's phase in a chirality-based coded qubit in a triangular triple quantum dot molecule with one electron spin each. The qubit is encoded in the two degenerate states of a three spin complex with total spin $S=1/2$. Using a Hubbard and Heisenberg model the Herzberg circuit encircling the degeneracy point is realized by adiabatically tuning the successive on-site energies of quantum dots and tunnel couplings across a pair of neighbouring dots. It is explicitly shown that encircling the degeneracy point …
We study theoretically phonon-assisted spin relaxation of an electron confined in an elliptical quantum dot (QD) subjected to a tilted magnetic field. In the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit terms, the relaxation rate is anisotropic with respect to the in-plane field orientation. This anisotropy originates from the interference, at nonzero tilt angle, between the two spin-orbit terms. We show that, in a narrow range of magnetic field orientations, the relaxation rate exhibits anomalous sensitivity to variations of the QD parameters. In this range, the relative change in the r…
Spin relaxation from a triplet excited state to a singlet ground state in a semiconductor quantum dot is studied by employing an electrical pump-and-probe method. Spin relaxation occurs via cotunneling when the tunneling rate is relatively large, confirmed by a characteristic square dependence of the relaxation rate on the tunneling rate. When cotunneling is suppressed by reducing the tunneling rate, the intrinsic spin relaxation is dominated by spin-orbit interaction. We discuss a selection rule of the spin-orbit interaction based on the observed double-exponential decay of the triplet state.
We analyzed localized charge time evolution in the system of two interacting quantum dots (QD) (artificial molecule) coupled with the continuous spectrum states. We demonstrated that Coulomb interaction modifies relaxation rates and is responsible for non-monotonic time evolution of the localized charge. We suggested new mechanism of this non-monotonic charge time evolution connected with charge redistribution between different relaxation channels in each QD.
We study theoretically phonon-induced spin dynamics of two electrons confined in a self-assembled double quantum dot. We calculate the transition rates and time evolution of occupations for the spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. We characterize the relative importance of various relaxation channels as a function of the electric and magnetic fields. The simulations are based on a model combining the eight-band k.p method and configuration-interaction approach. We show that the electron g-factor mismatch between the Zeeman doublets localized on different dots opens a relatively fast triplet-s…
Phonon-assisted singlet-singlet relaxation in semiconductor quantum dot molecules is studied theoretically. Laterally coupled quantum dot structures doped with two electrons are considered. We take into account interaction with acoustic phonon modes via deformation potential and piezoelectric coupling. We show that piezoelectric mechanism for the considered system is of great importance and for some ranges of quantum dot molecule parameters is the dominant contribution to relaxation. It is shown that the phonon-assisted tunneling rates reach much higher values (up to 160 ns$^{-1}$ even at zero…
We investigate non-equilibrium transport in the absence of spin-flip energy relaxation in a few-electron quantum dot artificial atom. Novel non-equilibrium tunneling processes involving high-spin states which cannot be excited from the ground state because of spin-blockade, and other processes involving more than two charge states are observed. These processes cannot be explained by orthodox Coulomb blockade theory. The absence of effective spin relaxation induces considerable fluctuation of the spin, charge, and total energy of the quantum dot. Although these features are revealed clearly by …
We report on measurements of the spin relaxation time T1 of individual electron spins in the few electron regime of a Si/SiO2-based quantum dot (QD). Energy-spectroscopy of the QD has been performed using a charge sensing technique. The spin relaxation times are subsequently measured in the time-domain by a pump-and-probe method. For the QD that contains an unpaired spin, likely only a single electron, we find that T1 depends strongly on the applied magnetic field. Possible mechanisms leading to the observed spin relaxation are discussed.
We have calculated spin relaxation rates in parabolic quantum dots due to the phonon modulation of the spin-orbit interaction in presence of an external magnetic field. Both, deformation potential and piezoelectric electron-phonon coupling mechanisms are included within the Pavlov-Firsov spin-phonon Hamiltonian. Our results have demonstrated that, in narrow gap materials, the electron-phonon deformation potential and piezoelectric coupling give comparable contributions as spin relaxation processes. For large dots, the deformation potential interaction becomes dominant. This behavior is not obs…
In order to explain the recently observed phenomenon of optical orientation of a single Mn spin residing inside a quantum dot, a process of Mn spin relaxation with characteristic timescale of tens of nanoseconds had been invoked. We show that after taking into account the mixing of states of the exciton and the Mn spin (due to the sp-d exchange interaction), the observed Mn optical orientation time can be explained by invoking only the processes of carrier spin relaxation.
We demonstrate electrical control of the spin relaxation time T_1 between Zeeman split spin states of a single electron in a lateral quantum dot. We find that relaxation is mediated by the spin-orbit interaction, and by manipulating the orbital states of the dot using gate voltages we vary the relaxation rate W= (T_1)^-1 by over an order of magnitude. The dependence of W on orbital confinement agrees with theoretical predictions and from these data we extract the spin-orbit length. We also measure the dependence of W on magnetic field and demonstrate that spin-orbit mediated coupling to phonon…
We investigate charge relaxation rates due to acoustic phonons in weakly-confined quantum dot systems, including both deformation potential and piezoelectric field interactions. Single-electron excited states lifetimes are calculated for single and coupled quantum dot structures, both in homonuclear and heteronuclear devices. Piezoelectric field scattering is shown to be the dominant relaxation mechanism in many experimentally relevant situations. On the other hand, we show that appropriate structure design allows to minimize separately deformation potential and piezolectric field interactions…
The temperature-dependent electron spin relaxation of positively charged excitons in a single InAs quantum dot (QD) was measured by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy at zero applied magnetic fields. The experimental results show that the electron-spin relaxation is clearly divided into two different temperature regimes: (i) T < 50 K, spin relaxation depends on the dynamical nuclear spin polarization (DNSP) and is approximately temperature-independent, as predicted by Merkulov et al. (ii) T > about 50 K, spin relaxation speeds up with increasing temperature. A model of two LO phonon …
We present a theoretical study of low temperature nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum dot in the presence of Zeeman magnetic field and current injection into one of its leads. By using a self-consistent renormalized equation of motion approach, we show that the injection of a spin-polarized current leads to a modulation of the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak in the differential conductance. We find that an appropriate amount of spin accumulation in the lead can restore the Kondo peak by compensating the splitting due to magnetic field. By contrast when the injected curre…
Spin-orbit mediated phonon relaxation in a two-dimensional quantum dot is investigated using different confining potentials. Elliptical harmonic oscillator and cylindrical well results are compared to each other in the case of a two-electron GaAs quantum dot subjected to a tilted magnetic field. The lowest energy set of two-body singlet and triplet states are calculated including spin-orbit and magnetic effects. These are used to calculate the phonon induced transition rate from the excited triplet to the ground state singlet for magnetic fields up to where the states cross. The roll of the cu…
A global quantitative picture of the phonon-induced two-electron spin relaxation in GaAs double quantum dots is presented using highly accurate numerical calculations. Wide regimes of interdot coupling, magnetic field magnitude and orientation, and detuning are explored in the presence of a nuclear bath. Most important, the unusually strong magnetic anisotropy of the singlet-triplet relaxation can be controlled by detuning switching the principal anisotropy axes: a protected state becomes unprotected upon detuning, and vice versa. It is also established that nuclear spins can dominate spin rel…
We present our study of decoherence in charge (spin) qubits due to evanescent-wave Johnson noise (EWJN) in a laterally coupled double quantum dot (single quantum dot). The high density of evanescent modes in the vicinity of metallic gates causes energy relaxation and a loss of phase coherence of electrons trapped in quantum dots. We derive expressions for the resultant energy relaxation rates of charge and spin qubits in a variety of dot geometries, and EWJN is shown to be a dominant source of decoherence for spin qubits held at low magnetic fields. Previous studies in this field approximated …
We report the measurement of extremely slow hole spin relaxation dynamics in small ensembles of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots. Individual spin orientated holes are optically created in the lowest orbital state of each dot and read out after a defined storage time using spin memory devices. The resulting luminescence signal exhibits a pronounced polarization memory effect that vanishes for long storage times. The hole spin relaxation dynamics are measured as a function of external magnetic field and lattice temperature. We show that hole spin relaxation can occur over remarkably long times…
We study spin-polarized transient transport in a quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic leads subjected to a rectangular bias voltage pulse. Time-dependent spin-resolved currents, occupations, spin accumulation, and tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) are calculated using both nonequilibrium Green function and master equation techniques. Both parallel and antiparallel leads' magnetization alignments are analyzed. Our main findings are: a dynamical spin accumulation that changes sign in time, a short-lived pulse of spin polarized current in the emitter lead (but not in the collector lead), and …
