We introduce the notion of non-lc ideal sheaves. It is an analogue of the notion of multiplier ideal sheaves. We establish the restriction theorem, which seems to be the most important property of non-lc ideal sheaves.
We establish a relative Bertini type theorem for multiplier ideal sheaves. Then we prove a relative version of the Kollár--Nadel type vanishing theorem as an application.
In this paper, we propose a definition of the moduli stack of stable relative ideal sheaves, and prove that it is a separated and proper Deligne-Mumford stack. It is the first part of the project of relative Donaldson-Thomas theory of ideal sheaves on projective threefolds, which in the end provides a degeneration formula of Donaldson-Thomas invariants of threefolds.
We determine the structure of certain moduli spaces of ideal sheaves by generalizing an earlier result of the first author. As applications, we compute the (virtual) Hodge polynomials of these moduli space, and calculate the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of certain 3-folds with trivial canonical classes.
We show that a bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of any power of the ideal sheaf of a smooth projective complex variety $X\subseteq\mathbb{P}^r$ is sharp exactly for complete intersections, provided the variety $X$ is cut out scheme-theoretically by several hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^r$. This generalizes a result of Bertram-Ein-Lazarsfeld.
We revisit some of the basic results of generic vanishing theory, as pioneered by Green and Lazarsfeld, in the context of constructible sheaves. Using the language of perverse sheaves, we give new proofs of some of the basic results of this theory. Our approach is topological/arithmetic, and avoids Hodge theory.
Let $X$ be a complex smooth quasi-projective surface acted upon by a finite group $G$ such that the quotient $X/G$ has singularities only of ADE type. We obtain an explicit expression for the generating series of the Euler characteristics of the zero-dimensional components in the moduli space of zero-dimensional subschemes on $X$ invariant under the action of $G$. We show that this generating series (up to a suitable rational power of the formal variable) is a holomorphic modular form.
In this article, we will characterize the multiplier ideal sheaves with weights of log canonical threshold one by restricting the weights to complex regular surface.
We consider various definitions of non-lc ideal sheaves -- generalizations of the multiplier ideal sheaf which define the non-lc (non-log canonical) locus. We introduce the maximal non-lc ideal sheaf and intermediate non-lc ideal sheaves and consider the restriction theorem for these ideal sheaves. We also begin the development of the theory of a characteristic p>0 analog of maximal non-lc ideals, utilizing some recent work of Blickle.
This paper is devoted to the study of the gluing construction for perverse sheaves on $G/U$ introduced by Kazhdan and Laumon ($G$ is a semisimple gourp, $U$ is the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup in $G$). Kazhdan and Laumon conjectured that all Ext-groups in the glued category are finite-dimensional and that global cohomological dimension is finite. We prove the first part of this conjecture. In the appendix we show that the simple object in the glued category corresponding to the constant sheaf has infinite cohomological dimension, thus disproving the second part of the above conjecture…
The purpose of this paper is to calculate the support of the multiplier ideal sheaves derived from the Kähler-Ricci flow on certain toric Fano manifolds with large symmetry. The early idea of this paper has already been in Appendix of \cite{futaki-sano0711}.
In this expository article we first give an overview on multiplier ideal sheaves and geometric problems in Kählerian and Sasakian geometries. Then we review our recent results on the relationship between the support of the subschemes cut out by multiplier ideal sheaves and the invariant whose non-vanishing obstructs the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds.
We extend Nadel's results on some conditions for the multiplier ideal sheaves to satisfy which are described in terms of an obstruction defined by the first author. Applying our extension we can determine the multiplier ideal sheaves on toric del Pezzo surfaces which do not admit Kähler-Einstein metrics. We also show that one can define multiplier ideal sheaves for Kähler-Ricci solitons and extend the result of Nadel using the holomorphic invariant defined by Tian and Zhu.
On certain del Pezzo surfaces with large automorphism groups, it is shown that the solution to the Kähler-Ricci flow with a certain initial value converges in $C^\infty$-norm exponentially fast to a Kähler-Einstein metric. The proof is based on the method of multiplier ideal sheaves.
This note states a conjecture for Nevanlinna theory or diophantine approximation, with a sheaf of ideals in place of the normal crossings divisor. This is done by using a correction term involving a multiplier ideal sheaf. This new conjecture trivially implies earlier conjectures in Nevanlinna theory or diophantine approximation, and in fact is equivalent to these conjectures. Although it does not provide anything new, it may be a more convenient formulation for some applications.
In this paper we give bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of products of ideals and ideal sheaves. In particular, we show that the regularity of a product of ideals is bounded by the sum of the regularities of its factors if the corresponding schemes intersect in a finite set of points. We also show how approximations of sheaves can be used to bound the regularity of an arrangement of two-planes in projective space.
This note is written for the Festschrift in honor of Professor Christer Kiselman. Multiplier ideal sheaves identify the location and the extent of the failure of crucial estimates. In this note we will discuss and explain the historic evolution of the notion of multiplier ideal sheaves, especially the interpretation from the viewpoint of destabilizing subsheaves in the context of terminating or bounding an infinite process. We will also discuss the approach of constructing rational curves in Fano manifolds by using dynamic multiplier ideal sheaves and singularity-magnifying complex Monge-Amper…
This paper describes how, in the case of algebraic surfaces, the well-known theorem of Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau can be proved in a framework of generalized 'multiplier ideal sheaves', following the ideas of Siu. The key concept is that the destabilizing sheaf satisfies a differential inclusion relation. This relation is used, together with a complex Frobenius theorem for locally finitely generated subsheaves, to imply coherence of the destabilizing subsheaf.
Let $\mathscr{I}$ be an ideal sheaf on $P^n$. In the first part of this paper, we bound the asymptotic regularity of powers of $\mathscr{I}$ as $ps-3\leq \reg \mathscr{I}^p\leq ps+e$, where $e$ is a constant and $s$ is the $s$-invariant of $\mathscr{I}$. We also give the same upper bound for the asymptotic regularity of symbolic powers of $\mathscr{I}$ under some conditions. In the second part, by using multiplier ideal sheaves, we give a vanishing theorem of powers of $\mathscr{I}$ when it defines a local complete intersection subvariety with log canonical singularities.
In this article, we obtain two sharp equality conditions in the restriction formula on complex singularity exponents: an equality between the codimension of the zero variety of related multiplier ideal sheaves and the relative codimension of the restriction of the variety on the submanifold (in the restriction formula); an equivalence between the transversality (between the variety and the submanifold) and the regularity of the restriction of the variety. As applications, we present sharp equality conditions in the fundamental subadditivity property on complex singularity exponents.
We combine work of Cox on the total coordinate ring of a toric variety and results of Eisenbud-Mustata-Stillman and Mustata on cohomology of toric and monomial ideals to obtain a formula for computing the Euler characteristic of a Weil divisor D on a complete simplicial toric variety in terms of graded pieces of the Cox ring and Stanley-Reisner ring. The main point is to use Alexander duality to pass from the toric irrelevant ideal, which appears in the computation of the Euler characteristic of D, to the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the fan, which is used in defining the Chow ring. The formula al…
In this article, we characterize plurisubharmonic functions of Lelong number one at the origin, such that the germ of the associated multiplier ideal sheaf is nontrivial: in arbitrary complex dimension, their singularity must be the sum of a germ of smooth divisor and of a plurisubharmonic function with zero Lelong number. We also present a new proof of the related well known integrability criterion due to Skoda.
In this article, we will characterize regular points respectively by the local vanishing, positivity of the Ricci curvature and $L^2$-solvability of the $\overline\partial$-equation together with Skoda's theorem for Nadel-Lebesgue multiplier ideal sheaves associated to plurisubharmonic (psh) functions on any (reduced) complex space of pure dimension. As a by-product, we show that any weak Kähler-Einstein metric on \emph{singular} $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano/Calabi-Yau/general type varieties cannot be smooth, and that in general there exists no \emph{singular} normal Kähler complex space such that the Kä…
This article discusses the geometric application of the method of multiplier ideal sheaves. It first briefly describes its application to effective problems in algebraic geometry and then presents and explains its application to the deformational invariance of plurigenera for general compact algebraic manifolds. Finally its application to the conjecture of the finite generation of the canonical ring is explored and the use of complex algebraic geometry in complex Neumann estimates is discussed.
The purpose of this paper is to establish injectivity theorems for higher direct image sheaves of canonical bundles twisted by pseudo-effective line bundles and multiplier ideal sheaves. As applications, we generalize Koll'ar's torsion freeness and Grauert-Riemenschneider's vanishing theorem. Moreover, we obtain a relative vanishing theorem of Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type and an extension theorem for holomorphic sections from fibers of morphisms to the ambient space. Our approach is based on transcendental methods and works for K"ahler morphisms and singular hermitian metrics with non-algebraic…
We observe that the classical Grauert-Riemenschneider Vanishing Theorem is a direct consequence of basic results from the theory of modulus sheaves with transfers as developed by Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki. We also obtain a new characterization of rational singularities in characteristic 0.
Throughout our work on the Lê cycles of an affine hypersurface singularity, our primary algebraic tool consisted of a method for taking the Jacobian ideal of a complex analytic function and decomposing it into pure-dimensional "pieces". These pieces were obtained by considering the relative polar varieties of Lê and Teissier as gap sheaves. A gap sheaf is a formal device which gives a scheme-theoretic meaning to the analytic closure of the difference of an initial scheme and an analytic set. We would like to extend our results on Lê cycles to functions on an arbitrary complex analytic space, a…
We apply Nadel's method of multiplier ideal sheaves to show that every complex del Pezzo surface of degree at most six whose automorphism group acts without fixed points has a Kähler-Einstein metric. In particular, all del Pezzo surfaces of degree $4,5$, or $6$ and certain special del Pezzo surfaces of lower degree are shown to have a Kähler-Einstein metric. This result is not new, but the proofs given in the present paper are less involved than earlier ones by Siu, Tian and Tian-Yau.
In the first part of this paper, we study the properties of some particular plurisubharmonic functions, namely the toric ones. The main result of this part is a precise description of their multiplier ideal sheaves, which generalizes the algebraic case studied by Howald. In the second part, almost entirely independent of the first one, we generalize the notion of the adjoint ideal sheaf used in algebraic geometry to the analytic setting. This enables us to give an analogue of Howald's theorem for adjoint ideals attached to monomial ideals. Finally, using the local Ohsawa-Takegoshi-Manivel theo…
The purpose of this paper is to establish an injectivity theorem generalized to pseudo-effective line bundles with transcendental (non-algebraic) singular hermitian metrics and multiplier ideal sheaves. As an application, we obtain a Nadel type vanishing theorem. For the proof, we study the asymptotic behavior of the harmonic forms with respect to a family of regularized metrics, and give a method to obtain L2-estimates of solutions of the dbar-equation by using the de Rham-Weil isomorphism between the dbar-cohomology and the check{C}ech cohomology.
Let $X$ be a smooth quasi-projective algebraic surface and let $Δ_n$ the big diagonal in the product variety $X^n$. We study cohomological properties of the ideal sheaves $\mathcal{I}^k_{Δ_n}$ and their invariants $(\mathcal{I}^k_{Δ_n})^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ by the symmetric group, seen as ideal sheaves over the symmetric variety $S^nX$. In particular we obtain resolutions of the sheaves of invariants $(\mathcal{I}_{Δ_n})^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for $n = 3,4$ in terms of invariants of sheaves over $X^n$ whose cohomology is easy to calculate. Moreover, we relate, via the Bridgeland-King-Reid equivalence,…
In this note, we reveal that our solution of Demailly's strong openness conjecture implies a matrix version of the conjecture; our solutions of two conjectures of Demailly-Kollár and Jonsson-Mustată implies the truth of twisted versions of the strong openness conjecture; our optimal $L^{2}$ extension implies Berndtsson's positivity of vector bundles associated to holomorphic fibrations over a unit disc.
Let $ϕ$ be a psh function on a bounded pseudoconvex open set $Ω\subset \C^n$, and let ${\cal I}(ϕ)$ be the associated multiplier ideal sheaf. Motivated by resolution of singularities issues, we establish an effective version of the coherence property of ${\cal I}(mϕ)$ as $m\to +\infty$. Namely, we estimate the order of growth in $m$ of the number of generators needed to engender ${\cal I}(mϕ)$ on a fixed compact subset, as well as the growth of the coefficients featuring in the decomposition of local sections as linear combinations over ${\cal O}_Ω$ of finitely many generators. The main idea i…
In the present article, we establish an equality condition in the restriction formula on jumping numbers by giving a sharp lower bound of the dimension of the support of a related coherent sheaf. As applications, we obtain equality conditions in the restriction formula on complex singularity exponents by giving the dimension, the regularity and the transversality of the support, and we also obtain some sharp equality conditions in the fundamental subadditivity property on complex singularity exponents. We also obtain two sharp relations on jumping numbers.
We give a purely algebraic construction of the continuous closure of any finitely generated torsion free module; a concept first studied by H.~Brenner and M.~Hochster. The construction implies that, at least in characteristic 0, taking continuous closure commutes with flat morphisms whose fibers are semi-normal. This implies that the continuous closure of a coherent ideal sheaf is again a coherent ideal sheaf (both in the Zariski and in the étale topologies) and it commutes with field extensions.
This paper is a very non-rigorous, loose, and extremely basic introduction to sheaves. This is meant to be a a guide to gaining intuition about sheaves, what they look like, and how they work, so that after reading this paper, someone can jump into the extremely abstract definitions and examples seen in textbooks with at least some idea of what is going on. Most of this material is inspired and built from the work of Dr. Michael Robinson, and that of Dr. Robert Ghrist and Dr. Jakob Hansen, as well as Dr. Justin Curry's PhD thesis, who are some of the only applied sheaf theorists out there and …
The purpose of this survey is to present analytic versions of the injectivity theorem and their applications. The proof of our injectivity theorems is based on a combination of the L^2-method for the dbar-equation and the theory of harmonic integrals. As applications, we obtain Nadel type vanishing theorems and extension theorems for pluri-canonical sections of log pairs. Moreover, we give some results on semi-ampleness related to the abundance conjecture in birational geometry (the minimal model program).
Let $\mathscr{I}$ be an ideal sheaf on $P^n$ defining a subscheme $X$. Associated to $\mathscr{I}$ there are two elementary invariants: the invariant $s$ which measures the positivity of $\mathscr{I}$, and the minimal number $d$ such that $\mathscr{I}(d)$ is generated by its global sections. It is now clear that the asymptotic behavior of $\reg \mathscr{I}^t$ is governed by $s$ but usually not linear. In this paper, we first describe the linear behavior of the asymptotic regularity by showing that if $s=d$, i.e., $s$ reaches its maximal value, then for $t$ large enough $\reg \mathscr{I}^t=dt+e…
The problem of bounding the "complexity" of a polynomial ideal in terms of the degrees of its generators has attracted considerable interest, brought into focus by the influential survey of Bayer and Mumford. The present paper examines some of these results and questions from a geometric perspective. Specifically, motivated by work of Paoletti we introduce an invariant s(I) that measures the "positivity" of an ideal sheaf I. Degree bounds on generators of I yield bounds on this s-invariant, but s(I) may be small even when the degrees of its generators are large. We prove that s(I) computes the…
We study ideals in Hall algebras of monoid representations on pointed sets corresponding to certain conditions on the representations. These conditions include the property that the monoid act via partial permutations, that the representation possess a compatible grading, and conditions on the support of the module. Quotients by these ideals lead to combinatorial Hopf algebras which can be interpreted as Hall algebras of certain sub-categories of modules. In the case of the free commutative monoid on n generators, we obtain a co-commutative Hopf algebra structure on $n$-dimensional skew shapes…
This paper is devoted to the study of some coherent sheaves on non reduced curves that can be locally embedded in smooth surfaces. If Y is such a curve then there is a filtration by subschemes C_i such that C_1 is the reduced curve associated to Y, and that for every P in C, if z is an equation of C_1 in the local ring of Y at P, then (z^i) is the ideal of C_i. A coherent sheaf on Y is called torsion free if it does not have any non zero subsheaf with finite support. We prove that torsion free sheaves are reflexive. We study then the quasi locally free sheaves, i.e. sheaves which are locally i…
We use methods from birational geometry to study the Hodge and weight filtrations on the localization along a hypersurface. We focus on the lowest piece of the Hodge filtration of the submodules arising from the weight filtration. This leads to a sequence of ideal sheaves called weighted multiplier ideals. The last ideal of this sequence is a multiplier ideal (and a Hodge ideal), and we prove that the first is the adjoint ideal. We also study the local and global properties of weighted multiplier ideals and their applications to singularities of hypersurfaces of smooth varieties.
This is Part II of the series of our papers under the title "Toward resolution of singularities over a field of positive characteristic (The Idealistic Filtration Program)". See http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0607009 for Part I.
In the smooth case, we prove quasi-flasqueness for the sheaves of all subelliptic multipliers as well as at each of the steps of the Kohn algorithm on a pseudoconvex domain in $\C^n.$ We use techniques by Jean-Claude Tougeron to show that if the domain has a real-analytic defining function, the modified Kohn algorithm involving generating ideals and taking real radicals only in the ring of real-analytic germs yields quasi-coherent sheaves. This sharpens a result obtained by J. J. Kohn in 1979.
An injectivity theorem on snc compact Kähler spaces: an application of the theory of harmonic integrals on log-canonical centers via adjoint ideal sheaves
We give sufficient conditions to ensure that the ideal $Φ(\mathcal E)$ of $\mathcal E$-phantom maps in a locally $λ$-presentable exact category $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{E})$ is (special) (pre)covering ideal, where $\mathcal E$ is an exact substructure of $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{E})$. As a byproduct, we infer the existence of various covering ideals in categories of sheaves which have a meaningful geometrical motivation. In particular we deal with a Zariski-local notion of phantom maps in categories of sheaves. We would like to point out that our approach is necessarily different from [FGHT13], …
