We prove that the second positive Neumann eigenvalue of a bounded simply-connected planar domain of a given area does not exceed the first positive Neumann eigenvalue on a disk of a twice smaller area. This estimate is sharp and attained by a sequence of domains degenerating to a union of two identical disks. In particular, this result implies the Polya conjecture for the second Neumann eigenvalue. The proof is based on a combination of analytic and topological arguments. As a by-product of our method we obtain an upper bound on the second eigenvalue for conformally round metrics on odd-dimensional spheres.
We study the ground state energy of the Neumann magnetic Laplacian on planar domains. For a constant magnetic field we consider the question whether, under an assumption of fixed area, the disc maximizes this eigenvalue. More generally, we discuss old and new bounds obtained on this problem.
This paper concerns the spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on $m$-fold rotationally symmetric planar domains. An $m$-fold rotationally symmetric simply connected domain $D$ is realized as the $m$th-root transform of a certain domain, say $Ω$. We prove that the domain of definition of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on $D$ is decomposed into invariant subspaces and the spectrum on one of them is the exact copy of the spectrum on $Ω$. It implies in particular that the spectrum on the transformed domain $D$ contains the spectrum on the original domain $Ω$ counting multiplicities.
The elastic Neumann--Poincaré operator is a boundary integral operator associated with the Lamé system of linear elasticity. It is known that if the boundary of a planar domain is smooth enough, it has eigenvalues converging to two different points determined by Lamé parameters. We show that eigenvalues converge at a polynomial rate on smooth boundaries and the convergence rate is determined by smoothness of the boundary. We also show that they converge at an exponential rate if the boundary of the domain is real analytic.
Let $(Ω,g)$ be a piecewise-smooth, bounded convex domain in $\R^2$ and consider $L^2$-normalized Neumann eigenfunctions $ϕ_λ$ with eigenvalue $λ^2$ and $u_λ:= ϕ_λ |_{\partial Ω}$ the associated Dirichlet data (ie. boundary restriction of $ϕ_λ$). Our first main result (Theorem \ref{T:non-con}) is a small-scale {\em non-concentration} estimate: We prove that for {\em any} $x_0 \in \overlineΩ,$ (including boundary corner points) and any $δ\in [0,1),$ $$ \| ϕ_h \|_{B(x_0,λ^{-δ})\cap Ω} = O(λ^{-δ/2}).$$ Our subsequent results involve applications of the nonconcentration estimate to upper bounds for…

Quantum waveguide with the shape of planar infinite straight strip and combined Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on the opposite half-lines of the boundary is considered. The absence of the point as well as of the singular continuous spectrum is proved.
This paper is devoted to the determination of the cases where there is equality in Courant's nodal domain theorem in the case of a Robin boundary condition. For the square, we partially extend the results that were obtained by Pleijel, Bérard--Helffer, Helffer--Persson--Sundqvist for the Dirichlet and Neumann problems. After proving some general results that hold for any value of the Robin parameter $h$, we focus on the case when $h$ is large. We hope to come back to the analysis when $h$ is small in a second paper. We also obtain some semi-stability results for the number of nodal domains of …
We provide an answer to a question raised by Levine and Weinberger in their $1986$ paper concerning the difference between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian on bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. More precisely, we show that for a certain class of domains there exists a sequence $p(k)$ such that $λ_{k}\geq μ_{k+ p(k)}$ for sufficiently large $k$. This sequence, which is given explicitly and is independent of the domain, grows with $k^{1-1/n}$ as $k$ goes to infinity, which we conjecture to be optimal. We also prove the existence of a sequence, now not given explicitly and onl…
We study the Laplacian with zero magnetic field acting on complex functions of a planar domain $Ω$, with magnetic Neumann boundary conditions. If $Ω$ is simply connected then the spectrum reduces to the spectrum of the usual Neumann Laplacian; therefore we focus on multiply connected domains bounded by convex curves and prove lower bounds for its ground state depending on the geometry and the topology of $Ω$. Besides the area, the perimeter and the diameter, the geometric invariants which play a crucial role in the estimates are the the fluxes of the potential one-form around the inner holes a…
We study a new link between the Steklov and Neumann eigenvalues of domains in Euclidean space. This is obtained through an homogenisation limit of the Steklov problem on a periodically perforated domain, converging to a family of eigenvalue problems with dynamical boundary conditions. For this problem, the spectral parameter appears both in the interior of the domain and on its boundary. This intermediary problem interpolates between Steklov and Neumann eigenvalues of the domain. As a corollary, we recover some isoperimetric type bounds for Neumann eigenvalues from known isoperimetric bounds f…
The second eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian is shown to be maximal for the disk among simply-connected planar domains of fixed area when the Robin parameter is scaled by perimeter in the form $α/L(Ω)$, and $α$ lies between $-2π$ and $2π$. Corollaries include Szegő's sharp upper bound on the second eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian under area normalization, and Weinstock's inequality for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue for simply-connected domains of given perimeter. The first Robin eigenvalue is maximal, under the same conditions, for the degenerate rectangle. When area normalization o…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb R^2$ be a bounded planar domain, with piecewise smooth boundary $\partial Ω$. For $σ>0$, we consider the Robin boundary value problem \[ -Δf =λf, \qquad \frac{\partial f}{\partial n} + σf = 0 \mbox{ on } \partial Ω\] where $ \frac{\partial f}{\partial n} $ is the derivative in the direction of the outward pointing normal to $\partial Ω$. Let $0<λ^σ_0\leq λ^σ_1\leq \dots $ be the corresponding eigenvalues. The purpose of this paper is to study the Robin-Neumann gaps \[ d_n(σ):=λ_n^σ-λ_n^0 . \] For a wide class of planar domains we show that there is a limiting mean value, …

We consider the zeta function $ζ_Ω$ for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of a simply connected planar domain $Ω$ bounded by a smooth closed curve of perimeter $2π$. We prove that $ζ_Ω''(0)\ge ζ_{\mathbb{D}}''(0)$ with equality if and only if $Ω$ is a disk where $\mathbb{D}$ denotes the closed unit disk. We also provide an elementary proof that for a fixed real $s$ satisfying $s\le-1$ the estimate $ζ_Ω''(s)\ge ζ_{\mathbb{D}}''(s)$ holds with equality if and only if $Ω$ is a disk. We then bring examples of domains $Ω$ close to the unit disk where this estimate fails to be extended to the interv…
We construct a series of examples of planar isospectral domains with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. This is a modification of a classical problem proposed by M. Kac.
We introduce a new variational principle for the study of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacians with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on planar domains. In contrast to the classical variational principles, its minimizers are gradients of eigenfunctions instead of the eigenfunctions themselves. This variational principle enables us to give an elementary analytic proof of the famous hot spots conjecture for the class of so-called lip domains. More specifically, we show that each eigenfunction corresponding to the lowest positive eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian on such a d…
The eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian on bounded, planar, convex domains with mixed boundary conditions is considered, where a Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on its complement. Given two different such choices of boundary conditions for the same domain, we prove inequalities between their lowest eigenvalues. As a special case, we prove parts of a conjecture on the order of mixed eigenvalues of triangles.
