A simple plane closed curve $Γ$ satisfies the DNA Inequality if the average curvature of any closed curve contained inside $Γ$ exceeds the average curvature of $Γ$. In 1997 Lagarias and Richardson proved that all convex curves satisfy the DNA Inequality and asked whether this is true for any non-convex curve. They conjectured that the DNA Inequality holds for certain L-shaped curves. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture for all L-Shapes and construct a large class of non-convex curves for which the DNA Inequality holds. We also give a polynomial-time procedure for determining whether any specific curve in a much larger class satisfies the DNA Inequality.
We prove a degree-six inequality on convex quadrilaterals. This inequality originated from work on the Atiyah-Sutcliffe conjectures on configurations of points in \Bbb{R} ^{3}.
We prove a sharp Rogers-Shephard type inequality for the p-difference body of a convex body in the two-dimensional case, for every p greater than or equal to one.
We generalize the hyperplane inequality in dimensions up to 4 to the setting of arbitrary measures in place of the volume. To prove this generalization we establish stability in the affirmative part of the solution to the Busemann-Petty problem asking whether symmetric convex bodies in R^n with smaller (n-1)-dimensional volume of all central hyperplane sections necessarily have smaller n-dimensional volume.
In this note, we derive an asymptotically sharp upper bound on the number of lattice points in terms of the volume of centrally symmetric convex bodies. Our main tool is a generalization of a result of Davenport that bounds the number of lattice points in terms of volumes of suitable projections.
We prove an inequality that extends to arbitrary measures the hyperplane inequality for volume of unconditional convex bodies originally observed by Bourgain.
This paper deals with four symmetrizations of a convex set $C$: the intersection, the harmonic and the arithmetic mean, and the convex hull of $C$ and $-C$. A well-known result of Firey shows that those means build up a subset-chain in the given order. On the one hand, we determine the dilatation factors, depending on the asymmetry of $C$, to reverse the containments between any of those symmetrizations. On the other hand, we tighten the relations proven by Firey and show a stability result concerning those factors near the simplex.
A stability version of the Blaschke-Santaló inequality and the affine isoperimetric inequality for convex bodies of dimension n>2 is proved. The first step is the reduction to the case when the convex body is o-symmetric and has axial rotational symmetry. This step works for related inequalities compatible with Steiner symmetrization. Secondly, for these convex bodies, a stability version of the characterization of ellipsoids by the fact that each hyperplane section is centrally symmetric is established.
We give a Bézout type inequality for mixed volumes, which holds true for any convex bodies. The key ingredient is the reverse Khovanskii-Teissier inequality for convex bodies, which was obtained in our previous work and inspired by its correspondence in complex geometry.
For a broad class of integral functionals defined on the space of $n$-dimensional convex bodies, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for monotonicity, and necessary conditions for the validity of a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. In particular, we prove that a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality implies monotonicity, and that a general Brunn-Minkowski type inequality is equivalent to the functional being a mixed volume.
The classical Loomis-Whitney inequality and the uniform cover inequality of Bollobás and Thomason provide lower bounds for the volume of a compact set in terms of its lower dimensional coordinate projections. We provide further extensions of these inequalities in the setting of convex bodies. We also establish the corresponding dual inequalities for coordinate sections; these uniform cover inequalities for sections may be viewed as extensions of Meyer's dual Loomis-Whitney inequality.
In an earlier paper \cite{mazeng} the authors introduced the notion of curvature entropy, and proved the plane log-Minkowski inequality of curvature entropy under the symmetry assumption. In this paper we demonstrate the plane log-Minkowski inequality of curvature entropy for general convex bodies. The equivalence of the uniqueness of cone-volume measure, the log-Minkowski inequality of volume, and the log-Minkowski inequality of curvature entropy for general convex bodies in $\mathbb R^{2}$ are shown.
A sharp quantitative version of the $L_p-$mixed volume inequality is established. This is achieved by exploiting an improved Jensen inequality. This inequality is a generalization of Pinsker-Csiszár-Kullback inequality for the Tsallis entropy. Finally, a sharp quantitative version of the $L_p-$Brunn-Minkowski inequality is also proved as a corollary.
We consider the following Bezout inequality for mixed volumes: $$V(K_1,\dots,K_r,Δ[{n-r}])V_n(Δ)^{r-1}\leq \prod_{i=1}^r V(K_i,Δ[{n-1}])\ \text{ for }2\leq r\leq n.$$ It was shown previously that the inequality is true for any $n$-dimensional simplex $Δ$ and any convex bodies $K_1, \dots, K_r$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It was conjectured that simplices are the only convex bodies for which the inequality holds for arbitrary bodies $K_1, \dots, K_r$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this paper we prove that this is indeed the case if we assume that $Δ$ is a convex polytope. Thus the Bezout inequality characterizes…
We consider a functional $\mathcal F$ on the space of convex bodies in $\R^n$ defined as follows: ${\mathcal F}(K)$ is the integral over the unit sphere of a fixed continuous functions $f$ with respect to the area measure of the convex body $K$. We prove that if $\mathcal F$ satisfies an inequality of Brunn--Minkowski type, then $f$ is the support function of a convex body, i.e., $\mathcal F$ is a mixed volume. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of translation invariant, continuous valuations which are homogeneous of degree $n-1$ and satisfy a Brunn--Minkowski type inequality.
Mahler's conjecture asks whether the cube is a minimizer for the volume product of a body and its polar in the class of symmetric convex bodies in R^n. The corresponding inequality to the conjecture is sometimes called the the reverse Blaschke-Santalo inequality. The conjecture is known in dimension two and in several special cases. In the class of unconditional convex bodies, Saint Raymond confirmed the conjecture, and Meyer and Reisner, independently, characterized the equality case. In this paper we present a stability version of these results and also show that any symmetric convex body, w…
We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.
We provide a sharp rate of convergence in the central limit theorem for random vectors with an unconditional, log-concave density. The argument relies on analysis of the Neumann laplacian on convex domains and on the theory of optimal transportation of measures.
We consider a different $L^p$-Minkowski combination of compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ than the one introduced by Firey and we prove an $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality, $p \in [0,1]$, for a general class of measures called convex measures that includes log-concave measures, under unconditional assumptions. As a consequence, we derive concavity properties of the function $t \mapsto μ(t^{\frac{1}{p}} A)$, $p \in (0,1]$, for unconditional convex measures $μ$ and unconditional convex body $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also prove that the (B)-conjecture for all uniform measures is equivalent to the (B)…
The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, a far-reaching generalization of the classical isoperimetric inequality to arbitrary mixed volumes, lies at the heart of convex geometry. The characterization of its extremal bodies is a long-standing open problem that dates back to Alexandrov's original 1937 paper. The known extremals already form a very rich family, and even the fundamental conjectures on their general structure, due to Schneider, are incomplete. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes. In particular, we show that the extre…
In this paper we show the following result: if C is an n-dimensional 0-symmetric convex compact set, $f:C\rightarrow[0,1)$ is concave, and $g:[0,1)\rightarrow[0,1)$ is not identically zero, convex, with g(0)=0, then \[ \frac{1}{|C|}\int_C g(f(x))dx \leq \frac12 \int_{-1}^1g(f(0)(1+t))dt, \] where |C| denotes the volume of C. If g? is strictly convex, equality holds if and only if f is affine, C is a generalized symmetric cylinder and f becomes 0 at one of the basis of C. We exploit this inequality to answer a question of Francisco Santos on estimating the volume of a convex set by means of the…
In this paper we consider the following analog of Bezout inequality for mixed volumes: $$V(P_1,\dots,P_r,Δ^{n-r})V_n(Δ)^{r-1}\leq \prod_{i=1}^r V(P_i,Δ^{n-1})\ \text{ for }2\leq r\leq n.$$ We show that the above inequality is true when $Δ$ is an $n$-dimensional simplex and $P_1, \dots, P_r$ are convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We conjecture that if the above inequality is true for all convex bodies $P_1, \dots, P_r$, then $Δ$ must be an $n$-dimensional simplex. We prove that if the above inequality is true for all convex bodies $P_1, \dots, P_r$, then $Δ$ must be indecomposable (i.e. cannot be…
Let $Z$ be an $n$-dimensional Gaussian vector and let $f: \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb R$ be a convex function. We show that: $$\mathbb P \left( f(Z) \leq \mathbb E f(Z) -t\sqrt{ {\rm Var} f(Z)} \right) \leq \exp(-ct^2),$$ for all $t>1$, where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. As an application we derive variance-sensitive small ball probabilities for Gaussian processes.
We prove stability estimates for the Brunn-Minkowski inequality for convex sets. Unlike existing stability results, our estimates improve as the dimension grows. Our results are equivalent to a thin shell bound, which is one of the central ingredients in the proof of the central limit theorem for convex sets.
Inspired by a fundamental theorem of Bernstein, Kushnirenko, and Khovanskii we study the following Bezout type inequality for mixed volumes $$ V(L_1,\dots,L_{n})V_n(K)\leq V(L_1,K[{n-1}])V(L_2,\dots, L_{n},K). $$ We show that the above inequality characterizes simplices, i.e. if $K$ is a convex body satisfying the inequality for all convex bodies $L_1, \dots, L_n \subset {\mathbb R}^n$, then $K$ must be an $n$-dimensional simplex. The main idea of the proof is to study perturbations given by Wulff shapes. In particular, we prove a new theorem on differentiability of the support function of the…
Let $m(G)$ be the infimum of the volumes of all open subgroups of a unimodular locally compact group $G$. Suppose integrable functions $ϕ_1 , ϕ_2 \colon G \to [0,1]$ satisfy $\| ϕ_1 \| \leq \| ϕ_2 \|$ and $\| ϕ_1 \| + \| ϕ_2 \| \leq m (G)$, where $\| \cdot \|$ denotes the $L^1$-norm with respect to a Haar measure $dg$ on $G$. We have the following inequality for any convex function $f \colon [0, \| ϕ_1 \| ] \to \mathbb{R}$ with $f(0) = 0$: \begin{align*} \int_{G}^{} f \circ ( ϕ_1 * ϕ_2 ) (g) dg \leq 2 \int_{0}^{\| ϕ_1 \|} f(y) dy + ( \| ϕ_2 \| - \| ϕ_1 \| ) f( \| ϕ_1 \| ). \end{align*} As a co…
A property of smooth convex domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is that if two points on the boundary $x, y \in \partial Ω$ are close to each other, then their normal vectors $n(x), n(y)$ point roughly in the same direction and this direction is almost orthogonal to $x-y$ (for `nearby' $x$ and $y$). We prove there exists a constant $c_n > 0$ such that if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded domain with $C^1-$boundary $\partial Ω$, then $$ \int_{\partial Ω\times \partial Ω} \frac{\left|\left\langle n(x), y - x \right\rangle \left\langle y - x, n(y) \right\rangle \right| }{\|x - y\|^{n+1}}~d σ(x) dσ…
We explore an interplay between an analysis of diffusion flows such as Ornstein--Uhlenbeck flow and Fokker--Planck flow and inequalities from convex geometry regarding the volume product. More precisely, we introduce new types of hypercontractivity for the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck flow and clarify how these imply the Blaschke--Santaló inequality and the inverse Santaló inequality, also known as Mahler's conjecture. Motivated the link, we establish two types of new hypercontractivity in this paper. The first one is an improvement of Borell's reverse hypercontractivity inequality in terms of Nelson's…
