We investigate quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and clarify the fundamental features of quantum correlation induced via successive electron spin measurements. This quantum correlation leads to interesting phenomena such as the bunching of outcomes in the electron spin measurements and the revival of an arbitrary initial electron spin state. The nuclear spin system is also affected by the quantum correlation and is in fact squeezed via conditional measurements or postselection. This squeezing is confirmed by calculating the increase in the purity of the nuclear spin system. Thus the successive electron spin measurements provide a probabilistic method to squeeze the nuclear spin system. These new features are predicted not only for the case of a double quantum dots occupied by a pair of electrons but also for the case of a single quantum dot occupied by a single electron or a pair of electrons.
Shot noise measurements provide information on particles' charge and their correlations. We report on shot noise measurements in a ubiquitous quantum dot under a quantized magnetic field. The measured noise at the peaks of a sequence of conductance resonances was some nine times higher than expected; suggesting bunching of electrons as they traverse through the dot. This enhancement might be mediated by an additional weakly coupled level to the leads or an excited state. Note that in the absence of magnetic filed no bunching had been observed.
We study spin-resolved noise in Coulomb blockaded double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes. The modulation of the interdot coupling and spin polarization in the electrodes gives rise to an intriguing dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\uparrow$ ($\downarrow$-$\downarrow$) blockade mechanism: Bunching of up (down) spins due to dynamical blockade of an up (down) spin. In contrast to the conventional dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\downarrow$ bunching (bunching of up spins entailed by dynamical blockade of a down spin), this new bunching behavior is found to be intimately associated with the s…
We study electron addition spectra of quantum dots in a broad range of electron occupancies starting from the first electron. Spectra for dots containing <200 electrons reveal a surprising feature. Electron additions are not evenly spaced in gate voltage. Rather, they group into bunches. With increasing electron number the bunching evolves from occurring randomly to periodically at about every fifth electron. The periodicity of the bunching and features in electron tunneling rates suggest that the bunching is associated with electron additions into spatially distinct regions within the dots.
We study the transport properties of two double quantum dots in a parallel arrangement at temperatures of a few Kelvin. Thereby, we show that decoherence entailed by the substrate phonons affects the shot noise. For asymmetric coupling between the dots and the respective lead, the current noise is sub-Poissonian for resonant tunneling, but super-Poissonian in the vicinity of the resonances. Our results indicate that phonon emission and absorption is responsible for the shot noise enhancement. The observed asymmetry of the peaks at low temperatures stems from spontaneous emission.
Periodic laser pulsing of singly charged semiconductor quantum dots in an external magnetic field leads to a synchronization of the spin dynamics with the optical excitation. The pumped electron spins partially rephase prior to each laser pulse, causing a revival of electron spin polarization with its maximum at the incidence time of a laser pulse. The amplitude of this revival is amplified by the frequency focusing of the surrounding nuclear spins. Two complementary theoretical approaches for simulating up to 20 million laser pulses are developed and employed that are able to bridge between 1…
We demonstrate systematic resonance fluorescence recovery with near-unity emission efficiency in single quantum dots embedded in a charge-tunable device in a wave-guiding geometry. The quantum dot charge state is controlled by a gate voltage, through carrier tunneling from a close-lying Fermi sea, stabilizing the resonantly photocreated electron-hole pair. The electric field cancels out the charging/discharging mechanisms from nearby traps toward the quantum dots, responsible for the usually observed inhibition of the resonant fluorescence. Fourier transform spectroscopy as a function of the a…
The periodic optical orientation of electron spins in (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots leads to the formation of electron spin precession modes about an external magnetic field which are resonant with the pumping periodicity. As the electron spin is localized within a nuclear spin bath, its polarization imprints onto the spin polarization of the bath. The latter acts back on the electron spin polarization. We implement a pulse protocol where a train of laser pulses is followed by a long, dark gap. It allows us to obtain a high-resolution precession mode spectrum from the free evolution of the elect…
In quantum optics the $g^{(2)}$-function is a standard tool to investigate photon emission statistics. We define a $g^{(2)}$-function for electronic transport and use it to investigate the bunching and anti-bunching of electron currents. Importantly, we show that super-Poissonian electron statistics do not necessarily imply electron bunching, and that sub-Poissonian statistics do not imply anti-bunching. We discuss the information contained in $g^{(2)}(τ)$ for several typical examples of transport through nano-structures such as few-level quantum dots.
We study electron transport through a triple quantum dot in ring configuration at finite bias. In particular, we analyze the influence of a gate voltage that detunes one of the dots, such that one branch of the interferometer becomes off-resonant. It turns out that then interference effects fade away, i.e., the current becomes independent of a penetrating flux and the detuning. The noise properties which are characterized by the full-counting statistics, however, are governed by bunching effects that may be tuned by the gate voltage. Analytical results for limiting cases support this picture. …
Models of the spontaneous emission of photons coupled to the electronic states of quantum dots are important for understanding quantum interactions in dielectric media as applied to proposed solid-state quantum computers, single photon emitters, and single photon detectors. The characteristic lifetime of photon emission is traditionally modeled in the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation. Here we model the fully quantized spontaneous emission, including near field effects, of a photon from the excited state of a quantum dot beyond theWeisskopf-Wigner approximation. We propose the use of discretized …
The optically induced polarization of localized electron spins in an ensemble of quantum dots (QDs) dephases due to the interaction with the surrounding nuclear spins. Despite this dephasing, the spins in the QDs can be controlled to respond coherently by applying periodic laser pulses, leading to a revival of the spin polarization before each pulse. This effect, known as spin mode locking, strongly depends on an emerging selection of certain polarizations of the nuclear spin bath which is driven to a steady state far from equilibrium. We investigate the influence of the nuclear composition in…
We study the time-evolution of localized wavepackets in graphene quantum dots under a perpendicular magnetic field, focusing on the quasiclassical and revival periodicities, for different values of the magnetic field intensities in a theoretical framework. We have considered contributions of the two inequivalent points in the Brillouin zone. The revival time has been found as an observable that shows the break valley degeneracy.
Hyperfine interaction of electron spins with nuclear spins, in coupled double quantum dots is studied. Results of successive electron spin measurements exhibit bunching due to correlations induced via the nuclear spins. Further nuclear spins can be purified via conditional electron spin measurements which lead to electron spin revivals in the conditional probabilities. The electron spin coherence time can be extended via conditional measurements. The results are extended to a single electron on a single QD.
Due to the Fermi-Dirac statistics of electrons the temporal correlations of tunneling events in a double barrier setup are typically negative. Here, we investigate the shot noise behavior of a system of two capacitively coupled quantum dot states by means of a Master equation model. In an asymmetric setup positive correlations in the tunneling current can arise due to the bunching of tunneling events. The underlying mechanism will be discussed in detail in terms of the current-current correlation function and the frequency-dependent Fano factor.
We have investigated the dynamics of the electron-nuclei coupled system in quantum dots. The bunching of results of the electron spin measurements and the revival in the conditional probabilities are salient features of the nuclear spin memory. The underlying mechanism is the squeezing of the nuclear spin state and the correlations between the successive electron spin measurements. Further we make a proposal for the preparation and detection of superposition states of nuclear spins merely relying on electron spin measurements. For unpolarized, completely random nuclear spin state one can still…
We study the luminescence dynamics of telecom wavelength InAs quantum dots grown on InP(111)A by droplet epitaxy. The use of the ternary alloy InAlGaAs as a barrier material leads to photon emission in the 1.55 $μ$m telecom C-band. The luminescence decay is well described in terms of the theoretical interband transition strength without the impact of nonradiative recombination. The intensity autocorrelation function shows clear anti-bunching photon statistics. The results suggest that our quantum dots are useful for constructing a practical source of single photons and quantum entangled photon…
We examine cross-correlations (CCs) in the tunneling currents through two parallel interacting quantum dots coupled to four independent ferromagnetic electrodes. We find that when either one of the two circuits is in the parallel configuration with sufficiently strong polarization strength, a new mechanism of dynamical spin blockade, i.e., a spin-dependent bunching of tunneling events, governs transport through the system together with the inter-dot Coulomb interaction, leading to a sign-reversal of the zero-frequency current CC in the dynamical channel blockade regime, and to enhancement of p…
Spin-dependent transport through a multilevel quantum dot weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads is analyzed theoretically by means of the real-time diagrammatic technique. Both the sequential and cotunneling processes are taken into account, which makes the results on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and shot noise applicable in the whole range of relevant bias and gate voltages. Suppression of the TMR due to inelastic cotunneling and super-Poissonian shot noise have been found in some of the Coulomb blockade regions. Furthermore, in the Coulomb blockade regime there is an additional contributio…
We investigate the transport properties of quantum dots placed in strong magnetic field using a quantum-mechanical ' approach based on the 2D tight-binding Hamiltonian with direct Coulomb interaction and the Landauer-Büttiker (LB) formalism. The electronic transmittance and the Hall resistance show Coulomb oscillations and also prove multiple addition processes. We identify this feature as the 'bunching' of electrons observed in recent experiments and give an elementary explanation in terms of spectral characteristics of the dot. The spatial distribution of the added electrons may distinguish …
We have investigated numerically the electron addition spectra in quantum dots containing a small number (N < 11) of interacting electrons, in presence of strong disorder. For a short-range Coulomb repulsion, we find regimes in which two successive electrons enter the dot at very close values of the chemical potential. In the strongly correlated regime these close additions, or pairing, are associated with electrons tunneling into distinct electron puddles within the dot. We discuss the tunneling rates at pairing, and we argue that our results are related to a phenomenon known as "bunching", r…
We investigate the generation of entanglement through a quantum dot molecule under the influence of vibrational phonon modes in a bias voltage junction. The molecular quantum dot system is realized by coupled quantum dots inside a suspended carbon nanotube. We consider the dynamical entanglement as a function of bias voltage and temperature by taking into account the electron-phonon interaction. In order to generate the robust entanglement between quantum dots and preserve it to reach the maximal achievable amount steadily, we introduce an asymmetric coupling protocol and apply the easy tunabl…
ZnSe nanowire heterostructures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy in the vapour-liquid-solid growth mode assisted by gold catalysts. Size, shape and crystal structure are found to strongly depend on the growth conditions. Both, zinc-blende and wurtzite crystal structures are observed using transmission electron microscopy. At low growth temperature, cone-shaped nano-needles are formed. For higher growth temperature, the nanowires are uniform and have a high aspect ratio with sizes of 1-2 $μ$m in length and 20-50 nm in width as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Growing a nanowire on t…
We report the observed photon bunching statistics of biexciton cascade emission at zero time delay in single quantum dots by second-order correlation function measurements under continuous wave excitation. It is found that the bunching phenomenon is independent of the biexciton binding energy when it varies from 0.59 meV to nearly zero. The photon bunching takes place when the exciton photon is not spectrally distinguishable from biexciton photon, and either of them can trigger the start in a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss setup. However, if the exciton energy is spectrally distinguishable from the b…
Photons and electrons are the key quantum media for the quantum information processing based on solid state devices. The essential ingredients to accomplish the quantum repeater were investigated and their underlying physics were revealed. The relevant elementary processes of the quantum state transfer between a single photon and a single electron were analyzed, to clarify the conditions to be satisfied to achieve the high fidelity of the quantum state transfer. An optical method based on the Faraday rotation was proposed to carry out the Bell measurement of two electrons which is a key operat…
We study the combined effect of finite temperature, underlying classical dynamics, and deformations on the statistical properties of Coulomb blockade conductance peaks in quantum dots. These effects are considered in the context of the single-particle plus constant-interaction theory of the Coulomb blockade. We present numerical studies of two chaotic models, representative of different mean-field potentials: a parametric random Hamiltonian and the smooth stadium. In addition, we study conductance fluctuations for different integrable confining potentials. For temperatures smaller than the mea…
Transport measurements through a few-electron circular quantum dot in bilayer graphene display bunching of the conductance resonances in groups of four, eight and twelve. This is in accordance with the spin and valley degeneracies in bilayer graphene and an additional threefold 'minivalley degeneracy' caused by trigonal warping. For small electron numbers, implying a small dot size and a small displacement field, a two-dimensional s- and then a p-shell are successively filled with four and eight electrons, respectively. For electron numbers larger than twelve, as the dot size and the displacem…
We consider a Dice model with Dirac cones intersected by a topologically flat band at the charge neutrality point and analyze the inelastic scattering of massless pseudospin-1 particles on a circular, gate-defined, oscillating barrier. Focusing on the resonant scattering regime at small energy of the incident wave, we calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients and derive explicit expressions for the time-dependent particle probability, current density and scattering efficiency within (Floquet) Dirac-Weyl theory, both in the near-field and the far-field. We discuss the importance of…
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been demonstrated to be versatile candidates to study the fundamentals of light-matter interaction [1-3]. In contrast with atom optics, dissipative processes are induced by the inherent coupling to the environment and are typically perceived as a major obstacle towards stable performances in experiments and applications [4]. In this paper we show that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, the memory of the environment can enhance coherent quantum optical effects. In particular, we demonstrate that the non-Markovian coupling to an incoherent phonon bat…
We examine electronic transport in a spin-blockaded double quantum dot. We show that by tuning the strength of the spin-orbit interaction the current flowing through the double dot exhibits a dip at zero magnetic field or a peak at a magnetic field for which the two-electron energy levels anticross. This behaviour is due to the dependence of the singlet-triplet mixing on the field and spin-orbit amplitude. We derive approximate expressions for the current as a function of the amplitudes of the states involved in the transport. We also consider an alternative model that takes into account a fin…

We discuss and compare two different types of confinement in bilayer graphene by top and bottom gating with symmetrical microelectrodes. Trivial confinement corresponds to the same polarity of all top gates, which is opposed to that of all bottom ones. Topological confinement requires the polarity of part of the top-bottom pairs of gates to be reversed. We show that the main qualitative difference between trivial and topological bound states manifests itself in the magnetic field dependence. We illustrate our finding with an explicit calculation of the energy spectrum for quantum dots and ring…
We report on the spin properties of individual Mn atoms in II-VI semiconductor strain free quantum dots. Strain free Mn-doped CdTe quantum dots are formed by width fluctuations in thin quantum wells lattice matched on a CdTe substrate. These quantum dots permit to optically probe and address any spin state of a Mn atom in a controlled strain environment. The absence of strain induced magnetic anisotropy prevents an optical pumping of the Mn spin at zero magnetic field. Thus, a large photoluminescence is obtained under resonant optical excitation of the exciton-Mn complex. An efficient optical …
We use time-resolved charge detection techniques to investigate single-electron tunneling in semiconductor quantum dots. The ability to detect individual charges in real-time makes it possible to count electrons one-by-one as they pass through the structure. The setup can thus be used as a high-precision current meter for measuring ultra-low currents, with resolution several orders of magnitude better than that of conventional current meters. In addition to measuring the average current, the counting procedure also makes it possible to investigate correlations between charge carriers. In quant…
Quantum dots (QDs) investigated through electron transport measurements often exhibit varying, state-dependent tunnel couplings to the leads. Under specific conditions, weakly coupled states can result in a strong suppression of the electrical current and they are correspondingly called blocking states. Using the combination of conductance and shot noise measurements, we investigate blocking states in carbon nanotube (CNT) QDs. We report negative differential conductance and super-Poissonian noise. The enhanced noise is the signature of electron bunching, which originates from random switches …
We propose to pump semiconductor quantum dots with surface acoustic waves which deliver an alternating periodic sequence of electrons and holes. In combination with a good optical cavity such regular pumping could entail anti-bunching and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. In the bad-cavity limit a train of equally spaced photons would arise.
The linear response transport properties of carbon nanotube quantum dot in the strongly correlated regime are discussed. The finite-U mean field slave boson approach is used to study many-body effects. Magnetic field can rebuilt Kondo correlations, which are destroyed by the effect of spin-orbit interaction or valley mixing. Apart from the field induced revivals of SU(2) Kondo effects of different types: spin, valley or spin-valley, also more exotic phenomena appear, such as SU(3) Kondo effect. Threefold degeneracy occurs due to the effective intervalley exchange induced by short-range part of…
A dilute concentration of magnetic impurities can dramatically affect the transport properties of an otherwise pure metal. This phenomenon, known as the Kondo effect, originates from the interactions of individual magnetic impurities with the conduction electrons. Nearly a decade ago, the Kondo effect was observed in a new system, in which the magnetic moment stems from a single unpaired spin in a lithographically defined quantum dot, or artificial atom. The discovery of the Kondo effect in artificial atoms spurred a revival in the study of Kondo physics, due in part to the unprecedented contr…
We report a new way to slow down the spontaneous emission rate of excitons in the wetting layer (WL) through radiative field coupling between the exciton emissions and the dipole field of metal islands. As a result, a long-lifetime decay process is detected in the emission of InAs/GaAs single quantum dots (QDs). It is found that when the separation distance from WL layer (QD layer) to the metal islands is around 20 nm and the islands have an average size of approximately 50 nm, QD lifetime may change from approximately 1 to 160 ns. The corresponding second-order autocorrelation function g(2) (…
We investigate the influence of vibrational phonon modes on the entanglement through a quantum dot molecule under the bias voltage-driven field. The molecular quantum dot system can be realized by coupled quantum dots in the middle of the suspended carbon nanotube. This system would be described by the Anderson-Holstein model and also can be analyzed by the polaron master equation in Markovian regime. In the presence of electron-phonon interaction, we study the entanglement as a function of bias voltage and temperature. Despite entanglement degradation because of phonon decoherence, we employ …
On-chip quantum information processing requires controllable quantum light sources that can be operated on-demand at high-speeds and with the possibility of in-situ control of the photon emission wavelength and its optical polarization properties. Here, we report on the dynamic control of the optical emission from core-shell GaN/InGaN nanowire (NW) heterostructures using radio frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The SAWs are excited on the surface of a piezoelectric lithium niobate crystal equipped with a SAW delay line onto which the NWs were mechanically transferred. Luminescent quantum…
Electron spins in gate-defined quantum dots provide a promising platform for quantum computation. In particular, spin-based quantum computing in gallium arsenide takes advantage of the high quality of semiconducting materials, reliability in fabricating arrays of quantum dots, and accurate qubit operations. However, the effective magnetic noise arising from the hyperfine interaction with uncontrolled nuclear spins in the host lattice constitutes a major source of decoherence. Low frequency nuclear noise, responsible for fast (10 ns) inhomogeneous dephasing, can be removed by echo techniques. H…
We study a pair of quantum dot exciton qubits interacting with a number of fluctuating charges that can induce a Stark shift of both exciton transition energies. We do this by solving the optical master equation using a numerical transfer matrix method. We find that the collective influence of the charge environment on the dots can be detected by measuring the correlation between the photons emitted when each dot is driven independently. Qubits in a common charge environment display photon bunching, if both dots are driven on resonance or if the driving laser detunings have the same sense for …
We study the effect of phonons on a proposed scheme for the direct measurement of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot by monitoring the the noise of the current flowing through a quantum point contact coupled to one of the dots. We show that although the effect of phonons is damaging to the procedure at extremely low temperatures characteristic of spin-in-quantum-dots experiments, and may even be fatal, increasing the temperature leads to a revival of the schemes usefulness. Furthermore, at higher, but still reasonably low temperatures phonon effects become advantageous to the mea…
We investigate the spin entanglement in the superconductor-quantum dot system proposed by Recher, Sukhorukov and Loss, coupling it to an electronic beam-splitter. The superconductor-quantum dot entangler and the beam-splitter are treated within a unified framework and the entanglement is detected via current correlations. The state emitted by the entangler is found to be a linear superposition of non-local spin-singlets at different energies, a spin-entangled two-particle wavepacket. Colliding the two electrons in the beam-splitter, the singlet spin-state gives rise to a bunching behavior, det…
We consider the relaxation of a spin qubit in a quantum dot propagating as a whole in a one-dimensional semiconductor with hyperfine coupling. We show that this motion leads to qualitatively new features in this process compared to static quantum dots. For a fast straightforward motion, the initial spin density decreases to zero with the relaxation rate independent of the spatial spread of the electron wave function and inversely proportional to the electron speed. However, for the oscillatory motion, the qubit acquires memory, and the dephasing becomes Gaussian rather than exponential. After …
If the states of spins in solids can be created, manipulated, and measured at the single-quantum level, an entirely new form of information processing, quantum computing and quantum communication, will be possible. We review our proposed spin-quantum dot architecture for a quantum computer and review some recent results on a deterministic source of entanglement generated by coupling quantum dots. Addressing the feasibility of quantum communication with entangled electrons we consider a scattering set-up with an entangler and beam splitter where the current noise exhibits bunching behavior for …
Electronic coupling and hence hybridization of atoms serve as the basis for the rich properties of the endless library of naturally occurring molecules. Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) manifesting quantum strong confinement, possess atomic like characteristics with s and p electronic levels, which popularized the notion of CQDs as artificial atoms. Continuing this analogy, when two atoms are close enough to form a molecule so that their orbitals start overlapping, the orbitals' energies start to split into bonding and anti-bonding states made out of hybridized orbitals. The same concept is also …
We investigate correlations between orthogonally polarized cavity modes of a bimodal micropillar laser with a single layer of self-assembled quantum dots in the active region. While one emission mode of the microlaser demonstrates a characteristic s-shaped input-output curve, the output intensity of the second mode saturates and even decreases with increasing injection current above threshold. Measuring the photon auto-correlation function g^{(2)}(τ) of the light emission confirms the onset of lasing in the first mode with g^{(2)}(0) approaching unity above threshold. In contrast, strong photo…
