Photons and electrons are the key quantum media for the quantum information processing based on solid state devices. The essential ingredients to accomplish the quantum repeater were investigated and their underlying physics were revealed. The relevant elementary processes of the quantum state transfer between a single photon and a single electron were analyzed, to clarify the conditions to be satisfied to achieve the high fidelity of the quantum state transfer. An optical method based on the Faraday rotation was proposed to carry out the Bell measurement of two electrons which is a key operation in the entanglement swapping for the quantum repeater and its feasibility was confirmed. Also investigated was the quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and a couple of new phenomena were predicted related to the correlations induced by the hyperfine interaction, namely, bunching and revival in the electron spin measurements. These findings will pave the way to accomplish the efficient and robust quantum repeater and nuclear spin quantum memory.
We have investigated the dynamics of the electron-nuclei coupled system in quantum dots. The bunching of results of the electron spin measurements and the revival in the conditional probabilities are salient features of the nuclear spin memory. The underlying mechanism is the squeezing of the nuclear spin state and the correlations between the successive electron spin measurements. Further we make a proposal for the preparation and detection of superposition states of nuclear spins merely relying on electron spin measurements. For unpolarized, completely random nuclear spin state one can still…
We study the influence of nuclei-induced frequency focusing on the mode locking of spin coherence in quantum dots subjected to a periodic train of optical pulses. In particular, we address the question whether or not nuclei-induced frequency focusing always enhances the effect of spin mode locking. We combine two advanced semiclassical approaches and extend the resulting model by including the full dynamics of the optically excited trion state. In order to reduce the discrepancy to a full quantum model, we establish a nondeterministic pulse description by interpreting each pump pulse as a meas…
We study the decoherence of a single electron spin in an isolated quantum dot induced by hyperfine interaction with nuclei for times smaller than the nuclear spin relaxation time. The decay is caused by the spatial variation of the electron envelope wave function within the dot, leading to a non-uniform hyperfine coupling. We evaluate the spin correlation function with and without magnetic fields and find that the decay of the spin precession amplitude is not exponential but rather power (inverse logarithm) law-like. For fully polarized nuclei we find an exact solution and show that the preces…
We investigate quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and clarify the fundamental features of quantum correlation induced via successive electron spin measurements. This quantum correlation leads to interesting phenomena such as the bunching of outcomes in the electron spin measurements and the revival of an arbitrary initial electron spin state. The nuclear spin system is also affected by the quantum correlation and is in fact squeezed via conditional measurements or postselection. This squeezing is confirmed by calculating the increase in the purity of th…
Deep cooling of electron and nuclear spins is equivalent to achieving polarization degrees close to 100% and is a key requirement in solid state quantum information technologies. While polarization of individual nuclear spins in diamond and SiC reaches 99% and beyond, it has been limited to 60-65% for the nuclei in quantum dots. Theoretical models have attributed this limit to formation of coherent "dark" nuclear spin states but experimental verification is lacking, especially due to the poor accuracy of polarization degree measurements. Here we measure the nuclear polarization in GaAs/AlGaAs …
We review and summarize recent theoretical and experimental work on electron spin dynamics in quantum dots and related nanostructures due to hyperfine interaction with surrounding nuclear spins. This topic is of particular interest with respect to several proposals for quantum information processing in solid state systems. Specifically, we investigate the hyperfine interaction of an electron spin confined in a quantum dot in an s-type conduction band with the nuclear spins in the dot. This interaction is proportional to the square modulus of the electron wave function at the location of each n…
We discuss mesoscopic effects in quantum dots, nanoparticles and nuclei. In quantum dots, we focus on the statistical regime of dots whose single-electron dynamics are chaotic. Random matrix theory methods, developed to explain the statistics of neutron resonances in compound nuclei, are useful in describing the mesoscopic fluctuations of the conductance in such dots. However, correlation effects beyond the charging energy are important in almost-isolated dots. In particular, exchange and residual interactions are necessary to obtain a quantitative description of the mesoscopic fluctuations. P…
Spin-flip rates in GaAs quantum dots can be quite slow, thus opening up the possibilities to manipulate spin states in the dots. We present here estimations of inelastic spin-flip rates mediated by hyperfine interaction with nuclei. Under general assumptions the nucleus mediated rate is proportional to the phonon relaxation rate for the corresponding non-spin-flip transitions. The rate can be accelerated in the vicinity of a singlet-triplet excited states crossing. The small proportionality coefficient depends inversely on the number of nuclei in the quantum dot. We compare our results with kn…
We report on the dynamics of optically induced nuclear spin polarization in individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots loaded with one electron by modulation doping. The fine structure of the hot trion (charged exciton $X^-$ with an electron in the $P$-shell) is identified in photoluminescence excitation spectra. A negative polarisation rate of the photoluminescence, optical pumping of the resident electron and the built-up of dynamic nuclear spin polarisation (DNSP) are observed in time-resolved optical pumping experiments when the quantum dot is excited at higher energy than the hot trion triplet sta…
We examine the logical qubit system of a pair of electron spins in double quantum dots. Each electron experiences a different hyperfine interaction with the local nuclei of the lattice, leading to a relative phase difference, and thus decoherence. Methods such as nuclei polarization, state narrowing, and spin-echo pulses have been proposed to delay decoherence. Instead we propose to suppress hyperfine dephasing by adiabatic rotation of the dots in real space, leading to the same average hyperfine interaction. We show that the additional effects due to the motion in the presence of spin-orbit c…
Coherence of spins of electrons confined in III-V quantum dots is strongly affected by their hyperfine interaction with the nuclei. In this paper an introduction to this subject will be given. Some theoretical approaches to the problem will be outlined. Most attention will be given to the Quasi-Static Bath Approximation, to the cluster expansion theories of dephasing due to the nuclear dynamics induced by the dipolar interactions (spectral diffusion), and to the effective Hamiltonian based theory of dephasing due to hyperfine-mediated interactions. The connections between the theoretical resul…
We use photoluminescence spectroscopy of ''bright'' and ''dark'' exciton states in single InP/GaInP quantum dots to measure hyperfine interaction of the valence band hole with nuclear spins polarized along the sample growth axis. The ratio of the hyperfine constants for the hole (C) and electron (A) is found to be C/A~-0.11. In InP dots the contribution of spin 1/2 phosphorus nuclei to the hole-nuclear interaction is weak, which enables us to determine experimentally the value of C for spin 9/2 indium nuclei as C_In~-5 micro-eV. This high value of C is in good agreement with recent theoretical…
Photoluminescence polarization is experimentally studied for samples with (In,Ga)As/GaAs selfassembled quantum dots in transverse magnetic field (Hanle effect) under slow modulation of the excitation light polarization from fractions of Hz to tens of kHz. The polarization reflects the evolution of strongly coupled electron-nuclear spin system in the quantum dots. Strong modification of the Hanle curves under variation of the modulation period is attributed to the peculiarities of the spin dynamics of quadrupole nuclei, which states are split due to deformation of the crystal lattice in the qua…
We propose an entanglement mechanism of nuclear spins in quantum dots driven by the electric current. The current accompanied by the spin flip in quantum dots gradually increases components of larger total spin of nuclei. This entangled state drastically enhances the spin relaxation rate of electrons, which can be detected by measuring a leakage current in the spin-blockade region. This mechanism is not relevant in optical experiments which examine the spin relaxation of single excitations.
Spins of donor electrons and nuclei in silicon are promising quantum bit (qubit) candidates which combine long coherence times with the fabrication finesse of the silicon nanotechnology industry. We outline a potentially scalable spin qubit architecture where donor nuclear and electron spins are coupled to spins of electrons in quantum dots and discuss requirements for donor placement aligned to quantum dots by single ion implantation.
We consider transport through quantum dots with two tunneling paths. Interference between paths gives rise to Fano resonances exhibiting Kondo-like physics. In studying such quantum dots, we employ a generalized Anderson model which we argue to be integrable. The exact solution is non-perturbative in the tunneling strengths of both paths. By exploiting this integrability, we compute the zero temperature linear response conductance of the dot and so obtain reasonable quantitative agreement with the experimental measurements reported in Gores et al. PRB 62, 2188 (2000).
We show that by illuminating an InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot with circularly polarized light, the nuclei of atoms constituting the dot can be driven into a bistable regime, in which either a threshold-like enhancement or reduction of the local nuclear field by up to 3 Tesla can be generated by varying the intensity of light. The excitation power threshold for such a nuclear spin "switch" is found to depend on both external magnetic and electric fields. The switch is shown to arise from the strong feedback of the nuclear spin polarization on the dynamics of spin transfer from electron…
The dynamics of the coupled electron-nuclear spin system is studied in an ensemble of singly-charged (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) using periodic optical excitation at 1 GHz repetition rate. In combination with the electron-nuclei interaction, the highly repetitive excitation allows us to lock the electron spins into magnetic resonance in a transverse external magnetic field. Sweeping the field to higher values, the locking leads to an effective "diamagnetic" response of significant strength due to dynamic nuclear polarization, which shields the QD electrons at least partly from the extern…
We consider a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional nanowire with tunable aspect ratio a. A configuration interaction theory is developed to calculate the energy spectra of the finite 1D quantum dot systems charged with two electrons in the presence of magnetic fields B along the wire axis. Fruitful singlet-triplet transition behaviors are revealed and explained in terms of the competing exchange interaction, correlation interaction, and spin Zeeman energy. In the high aspect ratio regime, the singlet-triplet transitions are shown designable by tuning the parameters a and B. The transiti…
Spontaneous nuclear polarization is predicted in double quantum dots in the spin-blocked electron transport regime. The polarization results from an instability of the zero-polarization state when singlet and triplet electron energy levels are brought into resonance by the effective hyperfine field of the nuclei on the electrons. The nuclear spins, once polarized, serve as a cold bath for cooling electrons below the lattice (phonon) temperature. We estimate the relevant time scales and discuss the conditions necessary to observe these phenomena.
We describe the electronic properties of a double dot for which the lateral coupling between the two vertical dots can be controlled in-situ with a center gate voltage (Vc) and the current flows through the two dots in series. When Vc is large and positive, the two dots merge. As Vc is made less positive, two dots are formed whose coupling is reduced. We measure charging diagrams for positive and negative source-drain voltages in the weak coupling regime and observe current rectification due to the Pauli spin blockade when the hyperfine interaction between the electrons and the nuclei is suppr…
We investigate the emission directionality of electronic intraband (intersubband) transitions in stacked coupled quantum dots. Using a well-established eight-band $k \cdot p$ method, we demonstrate that the minor contributions from the valence band mixing into the conduction band govern the polarization and emission directionality of electronic $p$-to-$s$-type intraband transitions. Despite that the contribution from the central-cell part to the momentum matrix element is dominant, we find, the contribution from the matrix elements among the envelope functions cannot be neglected. With the hel…
We propose an entanglement mechanism of nuclear spins in quantum dots driven by the electric current accompanied by the spin flip. This situation is relevant to a leakage current in spin-blocked regions where electrons cannot be transported unless their spins are flipped. The current gradually increases the components of larger total spin of nuclei. This correlation among the nuclear spins markedly enhances the spin-flip rate of electrons and hence the leakage current. The enhancement of the current is observable when the residence time of electrons in the quantum dots is shorter than the deph…
Graphene quantum dots are considered as promising alternatives to quantum dots in III-V semiconductors, e.g., for the use as spin qubits due to their consistency made of light atoms including spin-free nuclei which both imply relatively long spin decoherene times. However, this potential has not been realized in experiments so far, most likely, due to a missing control of the edge configurations of the quantum dots. Thus, a more fundamental investigation of Graphene quantum dots appears to be necessary including a full control of the wave function properties most favorably during transport spe…
We theoretically investigate the influence of the fluctuating Overhauser field on the spin of an electron confined to a quantum dot (QD). The fluctuations arise from nuclear angular momentum being exchanged between different nuclei via the nuclear magnetic dipole coupling. We focus on the role of the nuclear electric quadrupole moments (QPMs), which generally cause a reduction in internuclear spin transfer efficiency in the presence of electric field gradients. The effects on the electron spin coherence time are studied by modeling an electron spin echo experiment. We find that the QPMs cause …
Hyperfine interaction of electron spins with nuclear spins, in coupled double quantum dots is studied. Results of successive electron spin measurements exhibit bunching due to correlations induced via the nuclear spins. Further nuclear spins can be purified via conditional electron spin measurements which lead to electron spin revivals in the conditional probabilities. The electron spin coherence time can be extended via conditional measurements. The results are extended to a single electron on a single QD.
We proposed and demonstrated that the nuclear spins of the host lattice in GaAs double quantum dots can be strongly polarized in either of two opposite directions, parallel or antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The direction is selected simply by adjusting the dc source-drain voltage of the device. This nuclear polarization manifests itself by repeated controlled electron-nuclear spin scattering in the Pauli spin blockade state. Polarized nuclei are also controlled coherently by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This work confirmed that the nuclear spins in quantum dots are i…
The electron-nuclei (hyperfine) interaction is central to spin qubits in solid state systems. It can be a severe decoherence source but also allows dynamic access to the nuclear spin states. We study a double quantum dot exposed to an on-chip single-domain nanomagnet and show that its inhomogeneous magnetic field crucially modifies the complex nuclear spin dynamics such that the Overhauser field tends to compensate external magnetic fields. This turns out to be beneficial for polarizing the nuclear spin ensemble. We reach a nuclear spin polarization of ~50%, unrivaled in lateral dots, and expl…
Spatially nonhomogeneously spin polarized nuclei are proposed as a new mechanism to monitor electron states in a nanostructure, or as a means to createn and, if necessary, reshape such nanostructures in the course of the experiment. We found that a polarization of nulear spins may lift the spin polarization of the electron states in a nanostructure and, if sufficiently strong, leads to a polarization of the electron spins. Polarized nuclear spins may form an energy landscape capable of binding electrons with energy up to several meV and the localization radius $ >$ 100Å.
We have measured the carrier spin dynamics in p-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dots by pump-probe photo-induced circular dichroism and time-resolved photoluminescence experiments. We show that the hole spin dephasing is controlled by the hyperfine interaction between hole and nuclear spins. In the absence of external magnetic field, we find a characteristic hole spin dephasing time of 15 ns, in close agreement with our calculations based on dipole-dipole coupling between the hole and the quantum dot nuclei. Finally we demonstrate that a small external magnetic field, typically 10 mT instead of 200 mT…
We study a system in which electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas are confined by a nonhomogeneous nuclear spin polarization. The system consists of a heterostructure that has non-zero nuclei spins. We show that in this system electrons can be confined into a dot region through a local nuclear spin polarization. The nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum dot has interesting properties indicating that electron energy levels are time-dependent because of the nuclear spin relaxation and diffusion processes. Electron confining potential is a solution of diffusion equation with relaxation. …
We explore the structural changes in charge the density and the electron configuration of quantum dots caused by the presence of other dots in an array, and the interaction of neighboring dots. We discuss what recent measurements and calculation of the far-infrared absorption reveal about almost isolated quantum dots and investigate some aspects of the complex transition from isolated dots to dots with strongly overlapping electron density. We also address the the effects on the magnetization of such dot array.
We investigate spin-flip processes of Si quantum dots due to spin-orbit coupling. We utilize the spin-orbit coupling constants related to bulk and structure inversion asymmetry obtained numerically for two dimensional heterostructures. We find that the spin-flip rate is very sensitive to these coupling constants. We investigate the nuclei-mediated spin-flip process and find the level of the isotope $^{29}$Si concentration for which this mechanism become dominant.
We show how to realize a quantum interface between optical fields and the polarized nuclear spins in a singly charged quantum dot, which is strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. An effective direct coupling between cavity and nuclear spins is obtained by adiabatically eliminating the (far detuned) excitonic and electronic states. The requirements needed to map qubit and continuous variable states of cavity or traveling-wave fields to the collective nuclear spin are investigated: For cavity fields, we consider adiabatic passage processes to transfer the states. It is seen that a si…
The model considered in the paper is used nowadays to describe spin dynamics of quantum dots after optical excitation. Based on the exact diagonalization of a model Hamiltonian, we solve the problems of the electron spin polarization decay and magnetic field dependence of the steady state polarization. The important role of the nuclear state is shown and methods of its calculation for different regimes of optical excitation are proposed. The effect of spin echo observed after application of the magnetic field $π$-pulse is predicted.
The spin interaction of a hole confined in a quantum dot with the surrounding nuclei is described in terms of an effective magnetic field. We show that, in contrast to the Fermi contact hyperfine interaction for conduction electrons, the dipole-dipole hyperfine interaction is anisotropic for a hole, for both pure or mixed hole states. We evaluate the coupling constants of the hole-nuclear interaction and demonstrate that they are only one order of magnitude smaller than the coupling constants of the electron-nuclear interaction. We also study, theoretically, the hole spin dephasing of an ensem…
Highly accurate numerical results of phonon-induced two-electron spin relaxation in silicon double quantum dots are presented. The relaxation, enabled by spin-orbit coupling and the nuclei of $^{29}$Si (natural or purified abundance), are investigated for experimentally relevant parameters, the interdot coupling, the magnetic field magnitude and orientation, and the detuning. We calculate relaxation rates for zero and finite temperatures (100 mK), concluding that our findings for zero temperature remain qualitatively valid also for 100 mK. We confirm the same anisotropic switch of the axis of …
Quantum dots have promising properties for optoelectronic applications. They can be grown free of dislocations in highly mismatched epitaxy in the coherent Stranski-Krastanov mode. In this chapter, some thermodynamic aspects related to the wetting in the growth and self-assembly of three-dimensional (3D) coherent islands are studied using an energy minimization scheme in a 1+1-dimensional atomic model with anharmonic interactions. The conditions for equilibrium between the different phases are discussed. It is found that the thermodynamic driving force for 3D-cluster formation is the reduced a…
For coherent electron spins, hyperfine coupling to nuclei in the host material can either be a dominant source of unwanted spin decoherence or, if controlled effectively, a resource allowing storage and retrieval of quantum information. To investigate the effect of a controllable nuclear environment on the evolution of confined electron spins, we have fabricated and measured gate-defined double quantum dots with integrated charge sensors made from single-walled carbon nanotubes with a variable concentration of 13C (nuclear spin I=1/2) among the majority zero-nuclear-spin 12C atoms. Spin-sensit…
Optical and electrical control of the nuclear spin system allows enhancing the sensitivity of NMR applications and spin-based information storage and processing. Dynamic nuclear polarization in semiconductors is commonly achieved in the presence of a stabilizing external magnetic field. Here we report efficient optical pumping of nuclear spins at zero magnetic field in strain free GaAs quantum dots. The strong interaction of a single, optically injected electron spin with the nuclear spins acts as a stabilizing, effective magnetic field (Knight field) on the nuclei. We optically tune the Knigh…
Coupled elliptic quantum dots with different aspect ratios containing up to two electrons are studied using a model confinement potential in the presence of magnetic fields. Single and two particle Schroedinger equations are solved using numerical exact diagonolization to obtain the exchange energy and chemical potentials. As the ratio between the confinement strengths in directions perpendicular and parallel to the coupling direction of the double dots increases, the exchange energy at zero magnetic field increases, while the magnetic field of the singlet-triplet transition decreases. By inve…
We theoretically consider the effect of strain on the spin dynamics of a single heavy-hole (HH) confined to a self-assembled quantum dot and interacting with the surrounding nuclei via hyperfine interaction. Confinement and strain hybridize the HH states, which show an exponential decay for a narrowed nuclear spin bath. For different strain configurations within the dot, the dependence of the spin decoherence time $T_2$ on external parameters is shifted and the non-monotonic dependence of the peak is altered. Application of external strain yields considerable shifts in the dependence of $T_2$ …
Recent developments on studies of transport through quantum dots obtained by applying the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method are summarized. Some new aspects of Kondo physics which appear in nonequilibrium steady states are discussed both for the single dot case and for the serially coupled double-quantum-dot case.
Similar to atoms and nuclei, semiconductor quantum dots exhibit formation of shells. Predictions of magnetic behavior of the dots are often based on the shell occupancies. Thus, closed-shell quantum dots are assumed to be inherently nonmagnetic. Here, we propose a possibility of magnetism in such dots doped with magnetic impurities. On the example of the system of two interacting fermions, the simplest embodiment of the closed-shell structure, we demonstrate the emergence of a novel broken-symmetry ground state that is neither spin-singlet nor spin-triplet. We propose experimental tests of our…
We suggest a new spin orientation mechanism for localized electrons: $dynamic~electron~spin~polarization~provided~by~nuclear~spin~fluctuations$. The angular momentum for the electrons is gained from the nuclear spin system via the hyperfine interaction in a weak magnetic field. For this the sample is illuminated by an unpolarized light, which directly polarizes neither the electrons nor the nuclei. We predict, that for the electrons bound in localized excitons 100% spin polarization can be reached in longitudinal magnetic fields of a few millitesla. The proof of principle experiment is perform…
We describe the effects of the quantum back action under continuous optical measurement of electron spins in quantum dots. We consider the system excitation by elliptically polarized light close to the trion resonance, which allows for the simultaneous spin orientation and measurement. We microscopically demonstrate that the nuclei-induced spin relaxation can be both suppressed and accelerated by the continuous spin measurement due to the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects, respectively. Our theoretical predictions can be directly compared with the future experimental results and straightforwa…
A wealth of atomistic information is contained within a self-assembled quantum dot (QD), associated with its chemical composition and the growth history. In the presence of quadrupolar nuclei, as in InGaAs QDs, much of this is inherited to nuclear spins via the coupling between the strain within the polar lattice and the electric quadrupole moments of the nuclei. Here, we present a computational study of the recently introduced inverse spectra nuclear magnetic resonance technique to assess its suitability for extracting such structural information. We observe marked spectral differences betwee…
Thanks to its intrinsic ability to preserve spin coherence, graphene is a prime material for spintronics. In this review article, we summarize recent achievements related to spintronics in graphene quantum dots and motivate this field from a spintronics and a materials science point of view. We focus on theory but also discuss recent experiments. The main sources of spin decoherence are interactions with lattice excitations and the hyperfine interaction with present nuclear spins. We explain effective spin-phonon coupling in detail and present a generic power law for the spin relaxation time T…
A set of theoretical results [1-10] is reviewed, which concern calculations of energy spectra, density of energy levels, spin polarization, transport and optical properties (infrared absorption, luminescence) of semiconductor quantum dots and atomic traps. The studied systems contain a number of particles between 4 and 400, thus the calculation of their physical properties is a hard task. The analogy between these systems and the atomic nuclei is stressed and used throughout the paper. Common Nuclear Physics methods like Hartree-Fock and RPA schemes for finite systems, the BCS approach and the…
The orbital angular momentum L as an integer can be ultimately factorized as a product of prime numbers. We show here a close relation between the resolution of L and the classification of quantum states of an N-electron 2-dimensional system. In this scheme, the states are in essence classified into different types according to the m(k)-accessibility, namely the ability to get access to symmetric geometric configurations. The m(k)-accessibility is an universal concept underlying all kinds of 2-dimensional systems with a center. Numerical calculations have been performed to reveal the electroni…
Quantum dots in GaAs/InGaAs structures have been proposed as a candidate system for realizing quantum computing. The short coherence time of the electronic quantum state that arises from coupling to the nuclei of the substrate is dramatically increased if the system is subjected to a magnetic field and to repeated optical pulsing. This enhancement is due to mode locking: Oscillation frequencies resonant with the pulsing frequencies are enhanced, while off-resonant oscillations eventually die out. Because the resonant frequencies are determined by the pulsing frequency only, the system becomes …
Strain-induced gradients of local electric fields in semiconductor quantum dots can couple to the quadrupole moments of nuclear spins. We develop a theory describing the influence of this quadrupolar coupling (QC) on the spin correlators of electron and hole "central" spins localized in such dots. We show that when the QC strength is comparable to or larger than the hyperfine coupling strength between nuclei and the central spin, the relaxation rate of the central spin is strongly enhanced and can be exponential. We demonstrate a good agreement with recent experiments on spin relaxation in hol…
We analytically calculate the nuclear-spin interactions of a single electron confined to a carbon nanotube or graphene quantum dot. While the conduction-band states in graphene are p-type, the accordant states in a carbon nanotube are sp-hybridized due to curvature. This leads to an interesting interplay between isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine interactions. By using only analytical methods, we are able to show how the interaction strength depends on important physical parameters, such as curvature and isotope abundances. We show that for the investigated carbon structures, the 13C hyperfin…
For InAs/GaAs(001) quantum dot (QD) system, the wetting layer (WL) evolution and its temperature dependence were studied using reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS) and analyzed with a rate equation model. The WL thicknesses showed a monotonic increase at relatively low growth temperatures but a first increase and then decrease at higher temperatures, which were unexpected from the thermodynamic understanding. By adopting a rate equation model, the temperature dependence of QD growth was assigned as the origin of different WL evolutions. A brief discussion on the indium desorption was also…
We characterize numerically and analytically the signatures of the spin-orbit interaction in a two-electron GaAs double quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field. In particular, we obtain the return probability of the singlet state by simulating Landau-Zener voltage detuning sweeps which traverse the singlet-triplet ($S-T_+$) resonance. Our results indicate that non-spin-conserving interdot tunneling processes arising from the spin-orbit interaction have well defined signatures. These allow direct access to the spin-orbit interaction scales and are characterized by a frequency …
The population dynamics of dark and bright excitons in (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots is studied by two-color pump-probe spectroscopy in an external magnetic field. With the field applied in Faraday geometry and at T<20 K, the dark excitons decay on a ten nanoseconds time scale unless the magnetic field induces a resonance with a bright exciton state. At these crossings their effective lifetime is drastically shortened due to spin flips of either electron or hole by which the dark excitons are converted into bright ones. Due to the quasielastic character we attribute the origin of these flips to …
The spin fluctuations of electron and hole doped self-assembled quantum dot ensembles are measured optically in the low-intensity limit of a probe laser in absence and presence of longitudinal or transverse static magnetic fields. The experimental results are modeled by two complementary approaches based either on semiclassical or quantum mechanical descriptions. This allows us to characterize the hyperfine interaction of electron and hole spins with the surrounding bath of nuclei on time scales covering several orders of magnitude. Our results demonstrate (i) the intrinsic precession of the e…
We adapt the transfer matrix ($\T$-matrix) method originally designed for one-dimensional quantum mechanical problems to solve the circularly symmetric two-dimensional problem of graphene quantum dots. In similarity to one-dimensional problems, we show that the generalized $\T$-matrix contains rich information about the physical properties of these quantum dots. In particular, it is shown that the spectral equations for bound states as well as quasi-bound states of a circular graphene quantum dot and related quantities such as the local density of states and the scattering coefficients are all…
