Motivated by recent proposals of ``collisionally inhomogeneous'' Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which have a spatially modulated scattering length, we study the existence and stability properties of bright and dark matter-wave solitons of a BEC characterized by a periodic, piecewise-constant scattering length. We use a ``stitching'' approach to analytically approximate the pertinent solutions of the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger equation by matching the wavefunction and its derivatives at the interfaces of the nonlinearity coefficient. To accurately quantify the stability of bright and dark solitons, we adapt general tools from the theory of perturbed Hamiltonian systems. We show that solitons can only exist at the centers of the constant regions of the piecewise-constant nonlinearity. We find both stable and unstable configurations for bright solitons and show that all dark solitons are unstable, with different instability mechanisms that depend on the soliton location. We corroborate our analytical results with numerical computations.
In this paper, we give a proof of the existence of stationary dark soliton solutions or heteroclinic orbits of nonlinear equations of Schrödinger type with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. The result is illustrated with examples of dark solitons for cubic and photorefractive nonlinearities.
The effect of competing nonlinearity on beam dynamics in parity-time $(\mathcal{PT})$ symmetric potentials is investigated. By using numerical methods, the existence of gap solitons is demonstrated in the first Bragg gap of optical $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric lattices with competing nonlinearity. Meanwhile, the stability of such solitons is analyzed through introducing a small perturbation to the solitary solutions. The abrupt annihilation of the solitons during propagation demonstrates the Bragg gap solitons in $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric potentials are not stable. In comparison with the on-site ga…
We study the dynamics of localized pulses in the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation with strong nonlinearity management. The generalized complex GL equation, averaged over rapid modulations of the nonlinearity, is derived. We employ the variational approach to this averaged equation to derive a dynamical system for the dissipative soliton parameters. By using numerical simulations of this dynamical system and the full GP equation, we show that nonlinearity-managed dissipative solitons exist in the model. The parameter regions for stabilization of exploding soliton are obtained…
We predict that a photonic crystal fiber whose strands are filled with a defocusing nonlinear medium can support stable bright and also vortex solitons if the strength of the defocusing nonlinearity grows toward the periphery of the fiber. The domains of soliton existence depend on the transverse growth rate of the filling nonlinearity and nonlinearity of the core. Remarkably, solitons exist even when the core material is linear.
We have investigated mixed-gap vector solitons involving incoherently coupled fundamental and dipole components in a parity-time (PT) symmetric lattice with saturable nonlinearity. For the focusing case, vector solitons emerge from the semi-infinite and the first finite gaps, while for the defocusing case, vector solitons emerge from the first finite and the second finite gaps. For both cases, we find that stronger saturable nonlinearity is relative to sharper increase/decrease of soliton power with propagation constant and to narrower existence domain of vector solitons. This finding is helpf…
We show that an inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearity that grows toward the periphery in the positive and negative transverse directions at different rates can support strongly asymmetric fundamental and multipole bright solitons, which are stable in wide parameter regions. In the limiting case when nonlinearity is uniform in one direction, solitons transform into stable domain walls (fronts), with constant or oscillating intensity in the homogeneous region, attached to a tail rapidly decaying in the direction of growing nonlinearity.
We investigate one-dimensional Helmholtz solitons with nonlocal nonlinearity. We show an exact analytical solution to the nonlocal nonlinear nonparaxial propagation equation in the cases of high and weak nonlocality. We also numerically find that the degree of nonlocality can affect the width of nonlocal Helmholtz soliton beams, but have no effect on their stability. Contrarily, nonparaxiality can affect their stability, but have no effect on their width.
We address necklace solitons supported by circular waveguide arrays with out-of-phase modulation of nonlinearity and linear refractive index. Such two-dimensional necklace solitons appear as rings of multiple out-of-phase bright spots. We show that necklace solitons are stable if their peak intensity is low or moderate and that the domain of stability shrinks with increasing nonlinearity modulation depth. However, we find that the stability domains expand with increasing number of necklace spots.
We analyze a system of three two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled by linear terms and with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) nonlinearity. We consider two versions of the model: conservative and parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric. These models describe triple-core nonlinear optical waveguides, with balanced gain and losses in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case. We obtain families of soliton solutions and discuss their stability. The latter study is performed using a linear stability analysis and checked with direct numerical simulations of the evolutional system of …
Existence and stability of PT-symmetric gap solitons in a periodic structure with defocusing nonlocal nonlinearity are studied both theoretically and numerically. We find that, for any degree of nonlocality, gap solitons are always unstable in the presence of an imaginary potential. The instability manifests itself as a lateral drift of solitons due to an unbalanced particle flux. We also demonstrate that the perturbation growth rate is proportional to the amount of gain (loss), thus predicting the observability of stable gap solitons for small imaginary potentials.
Although most soliton research has traditionally considered dominant quadratic dispersion, the recent discovery of pure-quartic solitons has inspired analysis of soliton solutions with large higher orders of dispersion. Here we present analytic expressions for families of bright soliton solutions at arbitrary dispersion orders and practical methods to obtain the associated dispersion relations. These results provide a framework for considering higher order dispersion solitons and show the potential for further investigation of solitons in higher order dispersion systems.
We study systematically the scattering of solitons on localized impurities in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with a saturable nonlinearity. We show that, apart from the generic scenario of the outcome of the scattering process, namely the emergence of a reflected and a transmitted soliton, other effects can occur. In particular, it is found that, in the case of an attractive impurity, a soliton trapped at the impurity can coexist with the reflected and transmitted ones. This effect, which resembles the behaviour of a quantum particle interacting with a narrow impurity, has …
We demonstrate analytically and numerically the existence of exact solitons in the form of double-kink and fractional-transform, supported by a symmetric transversally modulated defocusing nonlinearity acting as a psuedopotential combined with an antisymmetric gain-loss profile. We explicate here that the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is never broken in the dynamical system under study, even in the absence of any symmetric modulation of linear refractive-index, and the transversally modulated defocusing nonlinearity comes in the way as a requirement to establish the ensuing $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry.
We report that infinite and semi-infinite lattices with spatially inhomogeneous self-defocusing (SDF)\ onsite nonlinearity, whose strength increases rapidly enough toward the lattice periphery, support stable unstaggered (UnST) discrete bright solitons, which do not exist in lattices with the spatially uniform SDF nonlinearity. The UnST solitons coexist with stable staggered (ST) localized modes, which are always possible under the defocusing onsite nonlinearity. The results are obtained in a numerical form, and also by means of variational approximation (VA). In the semi-infinite (truncated) …
We introduce multi-soliton sets in the two-dimensional medium with the second-harmonic-generating nonlinearity subject to spatial modulation in the form of a triangle of singular peaks. Various families of symmetric and asymmetric sets are constructed, and their stability is investigated. Stable symmetric patterns may be built of 1, 4, or 7 individual solitons, while stable asymmetric ones contain 1, 2, or 3 solitons. Symmetric and asymmetric patterns may demonstrate mutual bistability. The shift of the asymmetric single-soliton state from the central position is accurately predicted analytica…
The existence and stability of defect solitons in parity-time (PT) symmetric optical lattices with nonlocal nonlinearity are reported. It is found that nonlocality can expand the stability region of defect solitons. For positive or zero defects, fundamental and dipole solitons can exist stably in the semi-infinite gap and the first gap, respectively. For negative defects, fundamental solitons can be stable in both the semi-infinite gap and the first gap, whereas dipole solitons are unstable in the first gap. There exist a maximum degree of nonlocal nonlinearity, above which the fundamental sol…
We consider the impact of anisotropic nonlocality on the arrest of the collapse and stabilization of dipole-mode (DM) solitons in two-dimensional (2D) models of optical media with the diffusive nonlinearity. The nonlocal nonlinearity is made anisotropic through elliptic diffusivity. The medium becomes semi-local in the limit case of 1D diffusivity. Families of fundamental and DM solitons are found by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in a numerical form. We demonstrate that the collapse of 2D beams is arrested even in the semi-local system. The anisotropic nonlocality readily sta…
We demonstrate that modulation of the local strength of the cubic self-focusing (SF) nonlinearity in the two-dimensional (2D) geometry, in the form of a circle with contrast $Δg$ of the SF coefficient relative to the ambient medium with a weaker nonlinearity, stabilizes a family of fundamental solitons against the critical collapse. The result is obtained in an analytical form, using the variational approximation (VA) and Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) stability criterion, and corroborated by numerical computations. For the small contrast, the stability interval of the soliton's norm scales as $ΔN\si…
The existence and stability of stable bright solitons in one-dimensional (1D) media with a spatially periodical modulated Kerr nonlinearity are demonstrated by means of the linear-stability analysis and in direct numerical simulations. The nonlinear potential landscape can balance the fractional-order diffraction and thus stabilizes the solitons, making the model unique and governed by the recently introduced fractional Schrödinger equation with a self-focusing cubic nonlinear lattice. Both 1D fundamental and multihump solitons (in forms of dipole and tripole ones) are found, which occupy one …
We address the Gross--Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a periodic linear potential and a periodic sign-varying nonlinearity coefficient. Contrary to the claims in the previous works of Abdullaev {\em et al.} [PRE {\bf 77}, 016604 (2008)] and Smerzi & Trombettoni [PRA {\bf 68}, 023613 (2003)], we show that the intersite cubic nonlinear terms in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation appear beyond the applicability of assumptions of the tight-binding approximation. Instead of these terms, for an even linear potential and an odd nonlinearity coefficient, the DNLS equation and other reduc…
Formation of bright envelope solitons from wave packets with a repulsive nonlinearity was observed for the first time. The experiments used surface spin-wave packets in magnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film strips. When the wave packets are narrow and have low power, they undergo self-broadening during the propagation. When the wave packets are relatively wide or their power is relatively high, they can experience self-narrowing or even evolve into bright solitons. The experimental results were reproduced by numerical simulations based on a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation model.
We introduce a model of media with the cubic attractive nonlinearity concentrated along a single or double stripe in the two-dimensional (2D) plane. The model can be realized in terms of nonlinear optics (in the spatial and temporal domains alike) and BEC. In recent works, it was concluded that search for stable 2D solitons in models with a spatially localized self-attractive nonlinearity is a challenging problem. We make use of the variational approximation (VA) and numerical methods to investigate conditions for the existence and stability of solitons in the present setting. The result cruci…
We address the properties of optical solitons in thermal nonlinear media with a local refractive index defect that is capable to trap solitons launched even close to the sample boundary despite the boundary-mediated forces that tend to deflect all beams toward the center of the sample. We show that while such forces become more pronounced with increasing the input beam power the defect can trap only light below a critical power above which solitons are ejected. The dynamics of soliton ejection and the subsequent propagation may be controlled.
We reveal the existence of continuous families of guided single-mode solitons in planar waveguides with weakly nonlinear active core and absorbing boundaries. Stable propagation of TE and TM-polarized solitons is accompanied by attenuation of all other modes, i.e. the waveguide features properties of conservative and dissipative systems. If the linear spectrum of the waveguide possesses exceptional points, which occurs in the case of TM-polarization, an originally focusing (defocusing) material nonlinearity may become effectively defocusing (focusing). This occurs due to the geometric phase of…
We report results for solitons in models of waveguides with focusing or defocusing saturable nonlinearity and a parity-time(PT )-symmetric complex-valued external potential of the Scarf-II type. The model applies to the nonlinear wave propagation in graded-index optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We find both fundamental and multipole solitons for both focusing and defocusing signs of the saturable nonlinearity in such PT -symmetric waveguides. The dependence of the propagation constant on the soliton's power is presented for different strengths of the nonlinearity saturation, S. …
We introduce a model of one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) optical media with the $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity whose local strength is subject to cusp-shaped spatial modulation, $χ^{(2)}\sim r^{-α}$, with $α>0$, which can be induced by spatially nonuniform poling. Using analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that this setting supports 1D and 2D fundamental solitons, at $α<1$ and $α<2$, respectively. The 1D solitons have a small instability region, while the 2D solitons have a stability region at $α<0.5$ and are unstable at $α>0.5$. 2D solitary vortices are found too. They are unstable, s…
The dynamics of two-component solitons with a small spatial displacement of the high-frequency (HF) component relative to the low-frequency (LF) one is investigated in the framework of the Zakharov-type system. In this system, the evolution of the HF field is governed by a linear Schrödinger equation with the potential generated by the LF field, while the LF field is governed by a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with an arbitrary dispersion-nonlinearity ratio and a quadratic term accounting for the HF feedback on the LF field. The oscillation frequency of the soliton's HF component relative t…
We analyze three different high-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (HONLSE) models that have been used in the literature to describe the evolution of slowly modulated gravity waves on the surface of ideal finite-depth fluid. We demonstrate that the inclusion of the fifth-order nonlinear term to the HONLSE model introduces only a small correction to the amplitude of the bright HONLSE soliton solutions obtained without this term. Such soliton slutions behave as quasi-solitons in this more general case.
In this paper the permanent profile waves governed by a Boussinesq-type wave equation are analysed. The model involves displacement-type nonlinearities and dispersion terms. Physically such a model equation describes longitudinal waves (density change) in biomembranes which have an internal structure composed by lipid molecules. The possible solutions are constructed and analysed. The phase plane analysis and numerical simulation reveal a novel phenomenon: the possible existence of a soliton doublet.
An overview is given of basic models combining discreteness in their linear parts (i.e. the models are built as dynamical lattices) and nonlinearity acting at sites of the lattices or between the sites. The considered systems include the Toda and Frenkel-Kontorova lattices (including their dissipative versions), as well as equations of the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) and Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) types, and DNLS-AL combination in the form of the Salerno model. The interplay of discreteness and nonlinearity gives rise to a variety of states, most important ones being self-trapped discrete …
We investigate mobility regimes for localized modes in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with the cubic-quintic onsite terms. Using the variational approximation (VA), the largest soliton's total power admitting progressive motion of kicked discrete solitons is predicted, by comparing the effective kinetic energy with the respective Peierls-Nabarro (PN) potential barrier. The prediction is novel for the DNLS model with the cubic-only nonlinearity too, demonstrating a reasonable agreement with numerical findings. Small self-focusing quintic term quickly suppresses the mobility.…
We consider bright solitons supported by a symmetric inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearity growing rapidly enough toward the periphery of the medium, combined with an antisymmetric gain-loss profile. Despite the absence of any symmetric modulation of the linear refractive index, which is usually required to establish a PT-symmetry in the form of a purely real spectrum of modes, we show that the PT-symmetry is never broken in the present system, and that the system always supports stable bright solitons, fundamental and multi-pole ones. Such phenomenon is connected to non-linearizability of the…
We construct families of one-dimensional (1D) stable solitons in two-component $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and quintic nonlinearity, which plays the critical role in 1D setups. The system models light propagation in a dual-core waveguide with skewed coupling between the cores. Stability regions for the solitons are identified in the system's parameter space. They include the main semi-infinite gap, and an additional finite $\textit{annex gap}$. Stability boundaries are identified by means of simulations of the perturbed evolution, which agree with results pr…
We demonstrate a possibility to make rogue waves (RWs) in the form of the Peregrine soliton (PS) and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers (KMBs) effectively stable objects, with the help of properly defined dispersion or nonlinearity management applied to the continuous-wave (CW) background supporting the RWs. In particular, it is found that either management scheme, if applied along the longitudinal coordinate, making the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) selfdefocusing in the course of disappearance of the PS, indeed stabilizes the global solution with respect to the modulational instabilit…
Dark solitons and localized defect modes against periodic backgrounds are considered in arrays of waveguides with defocusing Kerr nonlinearity constituting a nonlinear lattice. Bright defect modes are supported by local increase of the nonlinearity, while dark defect modes are supported by a local decrease of the nonlinearity. Dark solitons exist for both types of the defect, although in the case of weak nonlinearity they feature side bright humps making the total energy propagating through the system larger than the energy transferred by the constant background. All considered defect modes ar…

We demonstrate that spatially inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinear landscapes with the nonlinearity coefficient growing toward the periphery as [1+abs(r)]**a support one- and two-dimensional fundamental and higher-order bright solitons, as well as vortex solitons, with algebraically decaying tails. The energy flow of the solitons converges as long as nonlinearity growth rate exceeds the dimensionality, i.e., a>D. Fundamental solitons are always stable, while multipoles and vortices are stable if the nonlinearity growth rate is large enough.
We address the properties of optical solitons that form in media with competing cubic-quintic nonlinearity and parity-time(PT)-symmetric complex-valued external potentials. The model describes the propagation of solitons in nonlinear optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We study the existence, stability, and robustness of fundamental, dipole, and multipole stationary solutions in this PT-symmetric system. The corresponding eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental, dipole, tripole, and quadrupole solitons are presented. We show that the eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental …
We report a novel spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomenon and ghost states existed in the framework of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger (FNLS) equation with focusing saturable nonlinearity and PT-symmetric potential. The continuous asymmetric soliton branch bifurcates from the fundamental symmetric one as the power exceeds some critical value. Intriguingly, the symmetry of fundamental solitons is broken into two branches of asymmetry solitons (alias ghost states) with complex conjugate propagation constants, which is solely in fractional media. Besides, the dipole (antisymmetry) and tripo…
New two-component soliton solutions of the coupled high-frequency (HF) - low-frequency (LF) system, based on Schrödinger - Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) system with the Zakharov's coupling, are obtained for arbitrary relative strengths of the nonlinearity and dispersion in the LF component. The complex HF field is governed by the linear Schrödinger equation with a potential generated by the real LF component, which, in turn, is governed by the KdV equation including the ponderomotive coupling term, representing the feedback of the HF field onto the LF component. First, we study the evolution of pu…
We present a numerical investigation of the propagation dynamics of a truncated Airy pulse in a highly dispersive and nonlinear medium by employing the split-step Fourier transform method and look, in particular, into the effects of fourth order dispersion (FOD) and cubic-quintic-septic nonlinearity on pulse evolution. Presence of FOD cancels the Airy pulse self-acceleration along with eclipsing the oscillatory tail during propagation in the linear regime. Further, we observe soliton shedding at low input pulse power in the presence of cubic and quintic nonlinearity and negative FOD. The emerg…
