We study the dynamics of localized pulses in the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation with strong nonlinearity management. The generalized complex GL equation, averaged over rapid modulations of the nonlinearity, is derived. We employ the variational approach to this averaged equation to derive a dynamical system for the dissipative soliton parameters. By using numerical simulations of this dynamical system and the full GP equation, we show that nonlinearity-managed dissipative solitons exist in the model. The parameter regions for stabilization of exploding soliton are obtained.
We show that when spatially localized gain landscape performs accelerated motion in the transverse plane, i.e., when it rotates or oscillates around the light propagation axis, the effective gain experienced by the light beam considerably reduces with increase of the amplitude of oscillations or frequency of rotation of the localized gain. In the presence of uniform background losses and defocusing nonlinearity, such gain landscapes may support dynamically oscillating gain-managed solitons, but if the amplitude of oscillations or the frequency of rotation of the localized gain exceeds a thresh…
We propose using a nonlinear phase shift interferometric converter (NPSIC) (a new device) for lumped compensation of the nonlinearity in optical fibers. The NPSIC is a nonlinear analog of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and provides a way to control the sign of the nonlinear phase shift. We investigate a potential use of NPSIC for compensation of the nonlinearity to make a dispersion-managed system closer to an ideal linear system. More importantly NPSIC can be used to essentially improve single channel capacity in the nonlinear regime.
We address the generation and interaction of dispersion-managed dissipative solitons (DMDS) in a model of fiber lasers with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity, multiphoton absorption and gain dispersion. Both anomalous and normal segments of the dispersion map include random dispersion fluctuations. Effects of the gain dispersion, higher-order nonlinearity and randomness on the generation of DMDS are demonstrated. The solitons exhibit breather-like evolution, and are found to be robust, up to a certain critical level of the random-dispersion component, which is sufficiently high. The roles of mult…
We investigate analytically, numerically, and experimentally the modulational instability in a layered, cubically-nonlinear (Kerr) optical medium that consists of alternating layers of glass and air. We model this setting using a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a piecewise constant nonlinearity coefficient and conduct a theoretical analysis of its linear stability, obtaining a Kronig-Penney equation whose forbidden bands correspond to the modulationally unstable regimes. We find very good {\it quantitative} agreement between the theoretical analysis of the Kronig-Penney equation, num…
We demonstrate the generation of vortex solitons in a model of dissipative optical media with the singular anti-cubic (AC) nonlinearity, by launching a vorticity-carrying Gaussian input into the medium modeled by the cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with the additional AC term. The effect of the latter term on the beam propagation is investigated in detail. An analytical result is produced for the asymptotic form of fundamental and vortical solitons at r --> 0, which is determined by the AC term. Numerical simulations identify parameter domains which maintain stable dissipative s…
A model is studied which describes a propagation of a subpicosecond optical pulse in dispersion-managed fibre links. In the limit of weak chromatic dispersion management, the model equation is reduced to a perturbed modified NLS equation having a nonlinearity dispersion term. By means of the Riemann--Hilbert problem, a perturbation theory for the soliton of the modified NLS equation is developed. It is shown in the adiabatic approximation that there exists a unique possibility to suppress the perturbation-induced shift of the soliton centre at the cost of proper matching of the soliton width a…
We study the generation of dissipative solitons (DSs) in the model of the fiber-laser cavities under the combined action of cubic-quintic nonlinearity, multiphoton absorption and/or multiphoton emission (nonlinear gain) and gain dispersion. A random component of the group-velocity dispersion (GVD) is included too. The DS creation and propagation is studied by means of a variational approximation and direct simulations, which are found to be in reasonable agreement. With a proper choice of the gain, robust DS operation regimes are predicted for different combinations of multiphoton absorption a…
Oscillating tails of dispersion-managed optical fiber system are studied for strong dispersion map in the framework of path-averaged Gabitov-Turitsyn equation. The small parameter of the analytical theory is the inverse time. An exponential decay in time of soliton tails envelope is consistent with nonlocal nonlinearity of Gabitov-Turitsyn equation, and the fast oscillations are described by a quadratic law. The pre-exponential modification factor is the linear function of time for zero average dispersion and cubic function for nonzero average dispersion.
We analyze the formation of one-dimensional localized patterns in a nonlinear dissipative medium including a set of two narrow "hot spots" (HSs), which carry the linear gain, local potential, cubic self-interaction, and cubic loss, while the linear loss acts in the host medium. This system can be realized, as a spatial-domain one, in optics, and also in Bose-Einstein condensates of quasi-particles in solid-state settings. Recently, exact solutions were found for localized modes pinned to the single HS represented by the delta-function. The present paper reports analytical and numerical solutio…
A plethora of applications have recently motivated extensive efforts on the generation of low noise Kerr solitons and coherent frequency combs in various platforms ranging from fiber to whispering gallery and integrated microscale resonators. However, the Kerr (cubic) nonlinearity is inherently weak, and in contrast, strong quadratic nonlinearity in optical resonators is expected to provide an alternative means for soliton formation with promising potential. Here, we demonstrate the formation of a dissipative quadratic soliton via non-stationary optical parametric amplification in the presence…
We uncover that, in contrast to the common belief, stable dissipative solitons exist in media with uniform gain in the presence of nonuniform cubic losses, whose local strength grows with coordinate x (in one dimension) faster than |x|. The spatially-inhomogeneous absorption also supports new types of solitons, that do not exist in uniform dissipative media. In particular, single-well absorption profiles give rise to spontaneous symmetry breaking of fundamental solitons in the presence of uniform focusing nonlinearity, while stable dipoles are supported by double-well absorption landscapes. Di…
The complex Ginzburg-Landau equation has been used extensively to describe various non-equilibrium phenomena. In the context of lasers, it models the dynamics of a pulse by averaging over the effects that take place inside the cavity. Ti:sapphire femtosecond lasers, however, produce pulses that undergo significant changes in different parts of the cavity during each round-trip. The dynamics of such pulses is therefore not adequately described by an average model that does not take such changes into account. The purpose of this work is severalfold. First we introduce the dispersion-managed Ginz…
We propose two models for the creation of stable dissipative solitons in optical media with the $χ^{(2)}$ (quadratic) nonlinearity. To compensate spatially uniform loss in both the fundamental-frequency (FF) and second-harmonic (SH) components of the system, a strongly localized "hot spot", carrying the linear gain, is added, acting either on the FF component, or on the SH one. In both systems, we use numerical methods to find families of dissipative $χ^{(2)}$ solitons pinned to the "hot spot". The shape of the existence and stability domains may be rather complex. An existence boundary for th…
This article offers a review of results for solitons in 2D and 3D models of nonlinear dissipative media. The existence of such solitons requires to maintain two balances: between nonlinear self-focusing and linear diffraction and/or dispersion, and between loss and gain. Due to these conditions, dissipative solitons (DSs) exist not in families, but as isolated solutions. The main issue is stability of 2D and 3D DSs, especially vortical ones. First, stable 2D DSs are presented in the framework of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity, which combines linea…
The existence and stability of dissipative discrete breathers (DDBs) in rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) arrays in both one and two dimensions is investigated numerically. In an rf SQUID array, the nonlinearity which is intrinsic to each SQUID due to the presence of the Josephson junction (on-site nonlinearity), along with the weak coupling of each SQUID to its nearest neighbors through magnetic forces, result in the appearance of discrete breathers. We analyze several discrete breather excitations, both in one and two dimensions, which are subjected to unavoidable losses…
We consider settings providing the existence of stable two-dimensional (2D) dissipative solitons with zero and nonzero vorticity in optical media with the quadratic ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity. To compensate the spatially uniform loss in both the fundamental-frequency (FF) and second-harmonic (SH) components of the system, a strongly localized amplifying region ("hot spot",HS), carrying the linear gain, is included, acting onto either the FF component or SH one. In both cases, the Gaussian radial gain profile supports stable fundamental dissipative solitons pinned to the HS. The structure of exis…
We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of a system whose dynamics is dominated by an intricate interplay between three key concepts of modern physics: topology, nonlinearity, and spontaneous symmetry breaking. The experiment is based on a two-mode coherently-driven optical resonator in which photons interact through the Kerr nonlinearity. In presence of a phase defect between the modes, a nonlinear attractor develops, which confers a synthetic Möbius topology to the modal structure of the system. That topology is associated with an inherently protected exchange symmetry betwee…
We study the influence of higher-order effects such as third order dispersion (TOD), fourth order dispersion (FOD), quintic nonlinearity (QN), self steepening (SS) and second order nonlinear dispersion (SOND) on the dynamics of dissipative soliton (DS) in metamaterials. Considering each higher-order effect as a perturbation to the system and following Lagrangian variational method, we demonstrate stable dynamics of DS as a result of the interplay between different higher-order effects. We also perform numerical analysis to confirm the analytical results.

Exact solutions for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with inhomogeneous complex linear and nonlinear potentials are found. We have found localized and periodic solutions for a wide class of localized and periodic modulations in the space of complex potentials and nonlinearity coefficients. Examples of stable and unstable solutions are given. We also demonstrated numerically the existence of stable dissipative breathers in the presence of an additional parabolic trap.
We consider the model of fiber-laser cavities near the zero-dispersion point, based on the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity, including the third-order dispersion (TOD) term. It is well known that this model supports stable dissipative solitons. We demonstrate that the same model gives rise to several families of robust bound states of the solitons, which exists only in the presence of the TOD. There are both stationary and dynamical bound states, with oscillating separation between the bound solitons. Stationary states are multistable, corresponding to diffe…
By using the long-wave approximation, a system of coupled evolution equations for the bulk velocity and the surface perturbations of a Bénard-Marangoni system is obtained. It includes nonlinearity, dispersion and dissipation, and it can be interpreted as a dissipative generalization of the usual Boussinesq system of equations. As a particular case, a strictly dissipative version of the Boussinesq system is obtained. Finnaly, some speculations are made on the nature of the physical phenomena described by this system of equations.
Discrete dissipative coupled systems exhibit complex behavior such as chaos, spatiotemporal intermittence, chimera among others. We construct and investigate chimera states, in the form of confined stationary and dynamical states in a chain of parametrically driven sites with onsite damping and cubic nonlinearity. The system is modeled by the respective discrete parametrically driven damped nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Chimeras feature quasi-periodic or chaotic dynamic in the filled area, quantified by time dependence of the total norm (along with its power spectrum), and by the largest Lya…
An overview is given of basic models combining discreteness in their linear parts (i.e. the models are built as dynamical lattices) and nonlinearity acting at sites of the lattices or between the sites. The considered systems include the Toda and Frenkel-Kontorova lattices (including their dissipative versions), as well as equations of the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) and Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) types, and DNLS-AL combination in the form of the Salerno model. The interplay of discreteness and nonlinearity gives rise to a variety of states, most important ones being self-trapped discrete …
Using the numerical solution of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and a variational method it is shown that (3+1)-dimensional spatiotemporal optical solitons can be stabilized by a rapidly oscillating dispersion coefficient in a Kerr medium with cubic nonlinearity. This has immediate consequence in generating dispersion-managed robust optical soliton in communication as well as possible stabilized Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic optical-lattice potential via an effective-mass formulation. We also critically compare the present stabilization with that obtained by a rapid sinusoidal osci…
We reveal the existence of continuous families of guided single-mode solitons in planar waveguides with weakly nonlinear active core and absorbing boundaries. Stable propagation of TE and TM-polarized solitons is accompanied by attenuation of all other modes, i.e. the waveguide features properties of conservative and dissipative systems. If the linear spectrum of the waveguide possesses exceptional points, which occurs in the case of TM-polarization, an originally focusing (defocusing) material nonlinearity may become effectively defocusing (focusing). This occurs due to the geometric phase of…
An unstable particle in quantum mechanics can be stabilized by frequent measurements, known as the quantum Zeno effect. A soliton with dissipation behaves like an unstable particle. Similar to the quantum Zeno effect, here we show that the soliton can be stabilized by modulating periodically dispersion, nonlinearity, or the external harmonic potential available in BEC. This can be obtained by analyzing a Painleve integrability condition, which results from the rigorous Painleve analysis of the generalized nonautonomous nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The result has a profound implication to th…
We consider the energy landscape of a dissipative Klein-Gordon lattice with a $ϕ^4$ on-site potential. Our analysis is based on suitable energy arguments, combined with a discrete version of the Łojasiewicz inequality, in order to justify the convergence to a single, nontrivial equilibrium for all initial configurations of the lattice. Then, global bifurcation theory is explored, to illustrate that in the discrete regime all linear states lead to nonlinear generalizations of equilibrium states. Direct numerical simulations reveal the rich structure of the equilibrium set, consisting of non-tri…
We analyze pattern-formation scenarios in the two-dimensional (2D) complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity and a cellular potential. The equation models laser cavities with built-in gratings, which are used to stabilize 2D patterns. The pattern-building process is initiated by kicking a localized compound mode, in the form of a dipole, quadrupole, or vortex which is composed of four local peaks. The hopping motion of the kicked mode through the cellular structure leads to the generation of various extended patterns pinned by the structure. In the ring-sh…
A model including two nonlinear chains with linear and nonlinear couplings between them, and opposite signs of the discrete diffraction inside the chains, is introduced. For [$χ^{(3)}$] nonlinearity, the model finds two different interpretations in terms of optical waveguide arrays, based on the diffraction-management concept. A straightforward discrete [$χ^{(2)}$] model, with opposite signs of the diffraction at the fundamental and second harmonics, is introduced also. Starting from the anti-continuum (AC) limit, soliton solutions in the $χ^{(3)}$ model are found, both above the phonon band a…
We introduce a model which integrates the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation in two dimensions (2D) with the linear-cubic-quintic combination of loss and gain terms, self-defocusing nonlinearity, and a periodic potential. In this system, stable 2D \textit{dissipative gap solitons} (DGSs) are constructed, both fundamental and vortical ones. The soliton families belong to the first finite bandgap of the system's linear spectrum. The solutions are obtained in a numerical form and also by means of an analytical approximation, which combines the variational description of the shape of the funda…
We demonstrate that necklace-shaped arrays of localized spatial beams can merge into stable fundamental or vortex solitons in a generic model of laser cavities, based on the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The outcome of the fusion is controlled by the number of beads in the initial necklace, 2N, and its topological charge, M. We predict and confirm by systematic simulations that the vorticity of the emerging soliton is the absolute value of difference of N and M. Threshold characteristics of the fusion are found and explained too. If the i…
We address dissipative soliton formation in modulated PT-symmetric continuous waveguide arrays composed from waveguides with amplifying and absorbing sections, whose density gradually increases (due to decreasing waveguide separation) either towards the center of the array or towards its edges. In such a structure the level of gain/loss at which PT-symmetry gets broken depends on the direction of increase of the waveguide density. Breakup of the PT-symmetry occurs when eigenvalues of modes localized in the region, where waveguide density is largest, collide and move into complex plane. In this…
A nonlinear Schroedinger model in a square well and managed nonlinearity is shown to possess nonlinear states as continuous extensions of the linear levels. The solutions are remarkably stable up to a threshold amplitude where a soliton is emitted and propagates outside the well. The analytic expression of the threshold is given in terms of the well size for each level. This process of nonlinear tunneling results from an instability of the evanescent wave inside the walls and can find experimental realization in a proposed nonlinear fiber Bragg gratings resonator.
