We address the interactions between optical solitons in the system with longitudinally varying nonlocality degree and nonlinearity strength. We consider a physical model describing light propagation in nematic liquid crystals featuring a strongly nonlocal nonlinear response. We reveal that the variation of the nonlocality and nonlinearity along the propagation direction can substantially enhance or weaken the interaction between out-of-phase solitons. This phenomenon manifests itself as a slowdown or acceleration of the soliton collision dynamics in one-dimensional geometries or of the soliton spiraling rate in bulk media. Therefore, one finds that by engineering the nonlocality and nonlinearity variation rate one can control the output soliton location.
We consider nonlinear modes of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a nonlocal nonlinearity and an additional PT-symmetric parabolic potential. We show that there exists a set of continuous families of nonlinear modes and study their linear stability in the limit of small nonlinearity. It is demonstrated that either PT symmetry or the nonlocality can be used to manage the stability of the small-amplitude nonlinear modes. The stability properties are also found to depend on the particular shape of the nonlocal kernel. Additional numerical simulations show that the stability results remain va…
In the context of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber Bragg gratings, tailoring the nonlinear profile along the propagation coordinate serves to be a new direction for realizing low-power all-optical switches. The scheme is fruitful only when the nonlinearity profile will be either linearly decreasing or increasing form. If the rate of variation of the nonlinearity profile is high, the critical intensities fall below the input power of value 0.01 in the unbroken regime provided that the light launching direction is right. Nowadays, every new theoretical inception into the PTFBG has started making s…
We show that media with inhomogeneous defocusing cubic nonlinearity growing toward the periphery can support a variety of stable vortex clusters nested in a common localized envelope. Nonrotating symmetric clusters are built of an even number of vortices with opposite topological charges, located at equal distances from the origin. Rotation makes the clusters strongly asymmetric, as the centrifugal force shifts some vortices to the periphery, while others approach the origin, depending on the topological charge. We obtain such asymmetric clusters as stationary states in the rotating coordinate…
The presence of spatial inhomogeneity in a nonlinear medium restricts the formation of Solitary Waves (SW) on a discrete set of positions whereas a nonlocal nonlinearity tends to smooth the medium response by averaging over neighboring points. The interplay of these antagonistic effects is studied in terms of SW formation and propagation. Formation dynamics is analyzed under a phase space approach and analytical conditions for the existence of either discrete families of Bright SW or continuous families of Kink SW are obtained in terms of Melnikov's method. Propagation dynamics are studied num…
Existence and stability of PT-symmetric gap solitons in a periodic structure with defocusing nonlocal nonlinearity are studied both theoretically and numerically. We find that, for any degree of nonlocality, gap solitons are always unstable in the presence of an imaginary potential. The instability manifests itself as a lateral drift of solitons due to an unbalanced particle flux. We also demonstrate that the perturbation growth rate is proportional to the amount of gain (loss), thus predicting the observability of stable gap solitons for small imaginary potentials.
Recent studies have demonstrated that defocusing cubic nonlinearity with local strength growing from the center to the periphery faster than $r^{D}$, in space of dimension $D$ with radial coordinate $r$, supports a vast variety of robust bright solitons. In the framework of the same model, but with a weaker spatial-growth rate, $\sim r^{α}$ with $α\leq D$, we here test the possibility to create stable\textit{\ localized continuous waves} (LCWs) in one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) geometries, \textit{% localized dark solitons} (LDSs) in 1D, and \textit{localized dark vortices} (LDVs) in 2D,…

We consider the ultrashort light pulse propagation through an inhomogeneous monomodal optical fiber exhibiting higher-order dispersive effects. Wave propagation is governed by a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with varying second-, third-, and fourth-order dispersions, cubic nonlinearity, and linear gain or loss. We construct a new type of exact self-similar soliton solutions that takes the structure of dipole via a similarity transformation connected to the related constant-coefficients one. The conditions on the optical fiber parameters for the existence of these self-similar stru…
We investigate non-autonomous solitons in a general coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CCNLS) system with temporally modulated nonlinearities and with an external harmonic oscillator potential. This general CCNLS system encompasses three distinct types of CCNLS equations that describe the dynamics of beam propagation in an inhomogeneous Kerr-like nonlinear optical medium for different choices of nonlinear polarizations owing to the anisotropy of the medium. We identify a generalized similarity transformation to relate the considered model into the standard integrable homogeneous coupled…
